COURTESY KIMBERLEY MEDIEVAL FEST

Vikings can be ferocious in battle but they have to eat too. Join them July 9 for a medieval feast at the Elks Club.

Kick off the Medieval Fest with a Viking feast C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

Ever enjoyed a cup of mead with a Viking? You are invited to sit down to a medieval feast this Friday, July 9 at the Kimberley Elks Club and do just that. As part of the Kimberley Medieval Festival that weekend, things will kick off with a medieval feast of roasted chicken and pork, baked apples and more. No cutlery will be provided as one and all are invited to dig in, Viking-style.

“We encourage people to dress up in medieval clothing though it’s not mandatory,” said Michelle Forbes, one of the festival organizers. “Our Viking guests for the weekend will be there to mingle with the crowd.” If you’d like to order mead to drink with the Vikings, you can order ahead by contacting Kimberley City Bakery or check out the Medieval Festival Facebook page. All proceeds from the dinner will go to the costs of putting on the festival. Tickets are $50 and on sale now at the Bakery, Centex and the Elks Club.

At the AKBLG convention in Kimberley at the end of April, a number of Columbia Basin

Trust grants were announced. In addition to the $143,000 for the Rotary Kimberley spray park, the City has received a CBT grant of $350,000 for the north wall of the civic centre. The north wall project has been looming for some time, as it was always intended as a tem-

porary wall. “The program will cost considerably more,” said Don McCormick. “We’ve allocated money in the budget, but now we have $350,000 in matching funds. It’s been 55 years waiting for this. The longer it has gone on, the more legendary the wall has become. See GRANT, page 5

AG’s report on mining doesn’t mince words C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

The recently released Auditor General’s report on Audit of Compliance and Enforcement of the Mining Sector, authored by AG Carol Bellringer, doesn’t mince words. “We found almost every one of our expectations for a robust compliance and enforcement program within the MEM and the MoE were not met. We found major gaps in resources, planning and tools. As a result, monitoring and inspections of mines were inadequate to ensure mine operators complied with requirements. The ministries have not publicly disclosed the limitations with their compliance and enforcement programs, increasing environmental risks, and government’s ability to protect the environment.

“Our advice, to reduce the risk that unfortunate and preventable incidents like Mount Polley don’t happen again, is for government to remove its compliance and enforcement program for mining from MEM. MEM’s role to promote mining development is diametrically opposed to compliance and enforcement.” While the government and Minister of Energy and Mines Bill Bennett accept all the recommendations, they do not accept the AG’s position on promotion and enforcement. “Government believes there is no evidence its compliance and enforcement regimes place the environment at risk generally. But the Mount Polley disaster, despite being unprecedented in modern B.C. history and despite the hidden, sub-surface cause of the accident, is evidence that im-

provements in regulation are necessary to increase protection against the unforeseen,” said Bennett. “We are committed to improving the regulatory oversight and reducing the margin of risk so that such a disaster can never happen again.” “Government does not, at this time, agree with the

OAG’s main recommendation to reorganize the Ministry of Energy and Mines compliance and enforcement programs into a separate ministry or agency. This recommendation suggests that the public servants in the Ministry of Energy and Mines are incapable of differentiating be-

tween promotion, and regulation of mining, a view government does not share.” Bennett went on to say that while government doesn’t agree with the recommendation to separate the Ministry enforcement programs into a separate agency, they do agree a new, separate compliance enforcement board will strengthen regulatory oversight. Such a board will be set up within 90 days, he said. Not good enough, says Columbia River Revelstoke MLA and Energy and Mines critic Norm Macdonald. “It’s the central recommendation in the report,” he said. “There needs to be separation. There is clearly an inability to properly oversee mining with the structure in place now.” Macdonald also has no time for the notion that no

other jurisdiction has this type of separation in place. “The fact is that this jurisdiction has Mount Polley. There is all sorts of evidence of oversight failures. We have to do something different. The Auditor General is correct. There needs to be complete change.” Macdonald says there is a lack of trust in the Ministry of Energy and Mines. “It’s not just environmental protection that has to change,” he said. “Without proper oversight, safety is not enforced. “They are soft pedaling the response to the report by saying they respect the work while at the same time rejecting the main recommendation. And they are also completely rejecting the suggestion that they haven’t been doing a good job. It doesn’t give a lot of hope.”

Kimberley Chamber of Commerce, Ambassador Program FOR THE BULLETIN

The Kimberley and District Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the College of the Rockies and Imagine Kootenay in the Ambassador Program June 2, 2016 at the Trickle Creek Lodge in Kimberley. The program gives participants the opportunity to learn about the multifaceted activities, events and attractions available to Kimberley’s visitors and local residents to increase Kimberley’s ambassadors. Businesses and organizations will present information about Kimberley’s summer events and activities including rafting, fishing, golfing, hiking, trail information, wildlife awareness, festivals as well as indoor activities.

In addition to becoming Ambassadors, this is a great opportunity for residents to also learn about how to be a guest in their own town and try out some of what is offered. The Chamber encourages staff and management of the business community that interact with visitors, along with the general public to learn summer activities from this engaging, enthusiastic panel. This one-day event will be from 9:00 am – 3:30 pm in the Purcell and Selkirk meeting rooms at the Trickle Creek Lodge. Register by May 31 with the Kimberley Chamber at (250) 4273666, or via e-mail at: info@kimberleychamber.com. The cost is $25.00 and includes and door prizes.

On Saturday April 30th a car load of Kimberley athletes travelled to trail to compete in the annual legion west Kootenay zone track meet. All the athletes competed hard and accomplished many personal bests. Of particular note Braydon Hoglund (above) set a meet record in midget boys high jump at 1.70m and Sydney Wilson set a meet record in the 1200 meters and 2000 meters. Dawson Gray set a personal best in Long Jump at 4.39m to place 2nd in the midget boys event. All three have qualified the BC summer games in Abbotsford July 21-24. Caetlyn and Leah Gray also competed in many events setting personal bests in all events. For those who like to watch local athletes the Kootenay zone high school meet is May 16th at the College of the Rockies track in Cranbrook and the Mckim school meet at the Mckim field is scheduled for May 25th.

Gay sympathized with the Fort McMurray residents, noting that Cranbrook and the rest of the RDEK haven’t had a disaster of that magnitude, however, local officials are always aware of danger from events such as flooding and wildfire. “We’ve been close to disasters in Cranbrook, we know fire, we know flooding—we can’t say we know what they’re going through, but it’s obvious that we need to

The Regional District of East Kootenay is donating $5,000 to the Red Cross to aid the organization’s response to the Fort McMurray wildfire that is threatening the northern Alberta city. RDEK board chair Rob Gay said the RDEK received an email from Raymond Louie, a Vancouver city councillor who is the president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, informing all members of a government matching program for Red Cross donations. “Red Cross, if we pro-

help our Canadian citizens and I think we’ll do more over time. “Our hearts go out to those folks, for sure.” Gay added that there is a very real connection from the area to north-

ern Alberta as local skilled workers commute to work for ten-day or seven-day shifts “There’s a real attachment for much of rural British Columbia,” Gay continued.

Additionally, a few municipal directors, including Cranbrook mayor Lee Pratt, added that RDEK-member city councils are bringing motions forward to make donations to the

Red Cross at upcoming council meetings. Mayor Don McCormick has put forth a motion to Kimberley City Council that the City of Kimberley donate $1000 as well.

Crash results in damaged Hydro pole and MVA Charges FOR THE BULLE TIN

On May 5th, 2016 Cranbrook RCMP were called to the intersection of Wycliffe Park Rd at Perry Creek Rd for a Motor Vehicle Crash. Reports indicated that a red car had hit a BC Hydro pole and the occupants had fled on foot. RCMP contacted the registered owner of the vehicle who advised that no one should have had her car and it was stolen.

Cranbrook members, along with Kimberley RCMP, and East Kootenay Traffic Services contained the scene until the Police Dog Services team could arrive. The dog team tracked the suspects to a cliff where two males, both residents of Cranbrook, were located. The males were arrested for theft of vehicle and escorted out of the bush. The two males were assessed by BC Ambulance Service and transported to hospital. The 22

year old male driver of the vehicle was released from hospital after being charged with several offences under the Motor Vehicle Act including Fail to Remain at the Scene of an accident and Driving Without a Drivers License. The vehicle turned out to belong to the 29 year old passenger, and was not stolen. The passenger was kept overnight in hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Endangered caribou herds in the Kootenays and South Peace region have continued to decline as the B.C. government assesses the second year of its wolf removal project. Nine wolves were killed by hunting and trapping in the South Selkirk Mountains this winter, while wolves took two caribou out of a herd that was down to 18 animals at last count. Forests ministry staff will try to shoot 24 wolves from helicopters before the snow melts in

the South Selkirks. Six of the remaining caribou have been fitted with radio collars to track them. Four caribou herds in the South Peace targeted for wolf control have also declined, to about 170 animals in the Quintette, Moberley, Scott and Kennedy Siding herds. Ministry staff have documented that about one third of losses in the South Peace are from wolves, where there are seven herds, one down to a single bull. Working with Treaty 8 First Nations, the min-

istry’s goal is to shoot from 120 to 160 wolves in the South Peace this year. The Graham herd, the largest in the South Peace and the province at about 700 animals, is being monitored for its survival without protection from wolves. Forests Minister Steve Thomson said the program will continue next winter, along with a project to capture and pen pregnant female caribou in the South Selkirks to keep newborn calves from being killed by wolves. “They’re getting increased survival rates

for the calves from the maternal penning, with lots of partners in support in that program,” Thomson said. The recovery plan for the South Selkirk population includes protecting 2.2 million hectares or 95 per cent of the best caribou habitat from logging and road-building. The South Peace recovery plan includes 400,000 hectares, about 90 per cent of the high-elevation winter caribou habitat in the region.

Democracy Speed Watch seeking volunteers is worth fighting for NORM MACDONALD MLA Columbia River Revelstoke

A recent motion by the Regional District of East Kootenay to ask the Province not to allow the Jumbo Glacier Mountain Resort Municipality (JGMRM) to have a full voting seat at the regional board table reminds us that the issue of Jumbo is still not over. Some of you will be re-reading that first sentence, trying to take in how it is actually possible that a voting seat at the regional district table for an appointed mayor from a non-existent town with no people, no infrastructure, and no future could even be contemplated. Yes. In the letters patent that created the JGMRM, and appointed a paid Mayor for a fake town, they also provided a seat at the regional district, making decisions about what happens to you and your community. This was an outrageous situation from the start. But now, when it is more clear than ever that there is no investor for Jumbo Resort, and there never will be, it is completely ridiculous. People in this area are not going to accept that the appointed mayor of the fake town of Jumbo would have the same voting rights as someone who is actually

elected. People want the Jumbo Municipality to go away. It has been a waste of taxpayers’ money, and it never should have existed in the first place. It is through foolhardy measures like the creation of a fake town that the BC Liberals have ensured that BC taxpayers have been one of the largest investors in Jumbo Glacier Resort. It is time for this farce to come to an end. Show your support for the Regional District of East Kootenay’s (RDEK) request to change the letters patent for JGMRM to prevent the appointed mayor from having a seat, voting or non-voting, on the RDEK board, as long as there is no democratically elected council in Jumbo that represents a minimum permanent population and assessed value. If a change isn’t made by January 1, 2017, a provincially appointed person will be making decisions on your behalf. Speak out in support of the RDEK motion by emailing the Premier at premier@ gov.bc.ca with a cc to my office at norm.macdonald.mla@leg.bc.ca. CBT grants for north wall, trails From Page 1 Even the reasons why it was temporary vary.” In any event, the wall will be redone this year and the project will also include extending the indoor walkway all the way around the arena, which means seniors, and others, can use it as an indoor walking track in the winter In addition to the north wall grant, the Kim-

berley Trails Society has received $80,000 from CBT for their Bootleg Trail project. “These are all visible, needed projects,” McCormick said. “There are so many things underway in Kimberley right now, including the repaving of Gerry Sorensen Way. That makes people feel good. There is an amazing momentum in the city and a lot of reasons to feel really good.”

The Kimberley Speed Watch group is seeking volunteers to join their team to promote traffic safety in the community. The Speed Watch group has been active in the community, focusing on road safety for over 9 years. They volunteer their time to educate and increases awareness in and around the City of Kimberley through speed monitoring. Members of the group set up at various times and locations from early spring to fall monitoring speed and traffic volume. In addition to education and awareness police review the statistics

and will follow up with enforcement action in the area if necessary. Last year the group put in more than 124 hours and set up on 33 separate occasions, recording the speed of more than 6800 vehicles. Volunteers usually go out twice a month for a few hours. Placement of the teams is a collaborative effort between the Speed Watch coordinators and police. Location deployments are based on o b s e r vat i o n s made by the police, complaints received from residents and local government or in high risk areas (i.e. school zones). In addition to enforcement police often send warning letters to those may need a further reminder to slow down. If you wish to be-

The nameless Lady of the Lake “A man is as old as he feels, a woman as old as she looks.” Mortimer Collins

W

hen a person risks life and limb (and probably lawsuits) by continuing to live in the town where he taught at the high school for ages, he is apt to run into ex-students occasionally. So it came as no surprise recently when I was dining at a local restaurant that I met this young lady, an ex-student, and her daughter. We greeted each other without snide remarks or sarcasm. The lady went on to another table while I struggled to remember her name. I failed that time, but certain events in our two lives came back to me in a flash. I’d retired from teaching some 27 years before this encounter and so, cleverly putting two and two together I realized that the young lady must be well into her 40s, but still her name wouldn’t come back to me. It had been on one of those Environmental Awareness Classes that we’d had run in Grade 11 that we must have bumped into one another, teacher and student. It must have been one of those interesting weeks on Kootenay Lake at the end of

the school year that we encountered each other, I was sure. That was the year that some relative of someone or other had allowed us to park our vehicles, including a large and cumbersome trailer for the canoes, outside his place and insisted on us borrowing a walkie-talkie radio so that we might stay in contact should some catastrophe take place. We teachers shrugged off the probability. Anyway, off we went, an armada, round the Peter edge of the lake so that we stay as promised no Warland could further than 100 feet from the shore and thus managed to be thoroughly aware of the environment without bumping into it and being wrecked or drowned. It turned out to be a hectic week and yet, thankfully, we’d had no need of that radio. Whenever one of us turned it on we found ourselves deep in conversations with some fellow in Oklahoma somewhere, never with the kind person who had loaned it to us, over near Creston, just across the lake. So, after some amusing misadventures and some sleep-short nights, we made it safely back to the launch place and loaded the canoes and students so, tired, we prepared to drive home to Cranbook. I think it was then that I decided I needed someone with me in my pick-up to keep me awake and so selected Chatty-Cathy, a

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

real live-wire girl, a non-stop talker, to be my passenger. She hopped up with alacrity and strapped in, I recall but, as soon as I drove off, she fell asleep, soundly. “Fat lot of use you were,” I grumbled when the convoy came into town. “Well,” explained the lady of the lake, “It was a tiring trip. All those boys in my tent every night! Didn’t get much sleep.” Wry grin. Many years later, I encountered that same lass on the top of Lakit Lookout and she was packing a baby. Chatty was still chatty and was a married lady by then so it must have been some years after the Grade 11 trip and yet I still couldn’t remember her name. The child looked cold so I loaned the mother a big sweater to swaddle her in and, I am sure, I did get the sweater back some months later. After the meal in the restaurant, I chatted with the garrulous lady of the lake and was also introduced to the daughter who watched as her mother and I shared some reminiscences and laughed a great deal. At one time I asked the daughter if it had been she who had used my sweater up on Lakit’s’ windy crest. She was and, mother told me, was now about to take off to college. I did some more rapid calculations and decided that her Mum must be getting on up there age-wise, but still I couldn’t recall the woman’s name. I hope she’ll forgive me.

Trans-Pacific Partnership

This is a comment regarding MLA, Bill Bennett’s “3 Facts” about the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), recently published in your paper. Fact #1 states, “On April 14th, the legislature moved to support Christy Clark’s motion in support of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). The NDP opposed the agreement for jobs”. In Fact #3 he states that …”our province is expected to gain 2,500 jobs”. However, what he doesn’t tell us, is that all those jobs could be filled by foreign workers! Under the proposed agreement, foreign corporations will be allowed to import/ transfer their own employees to fill jobs here (think HG Mining), without regard to our immigration or labour laws. Hopefully, this will help to explain one reason why the NDP is opposed to this TPP. Gary Werk Cranbrook

Golf Club Challenge

During the afternoon of Thursday, May 5, the Windermere Valley Men’s Club held

its weekly competition. Our thoughts were not on golf, but rather on the families displaced by the fires raging in northern Alberta. At the conclusion of the event, our membership decided to donate the prize money that would normally have gone to the afternoon’s winners to the disaster relief efforts currently being undertaken. Al Wittke, a longstanding member of our club, also donated $2,000 to the Salvation Army. Al lived in Fort MacMurray in the Beacon Hill subdivision. His former residence has burned to the ground. The Windermere Valley Men’s Club is challenging men’s and women’s golf clubs across B.C. and Alberta to do the same. I worked for ten years with environmental land use management. I look at every place I live and visit from that perspective.

With past and current fire disasters, it is time we paid more attention and action to fire reduction. We have recently seen the Kelowna, North Thompson and Rock Creek fires. Every forested living place in BC and every forested environment in all of Canada is at risk of fire. Housing interface with forest is particularly vulnerable. Surely the cost of loss and reconstruction is greater than prevention. In Cranbrook where I live there is crowded overstocked forest with huge volumes of dry and volatile fuel surrounding the city. Live sparks are blown 2 km from the leading edge. Cranbrook is about 2 km from side to side in any direction. We are about 20,000 citizens. I understand harvesting small wood is calculated in the annual allowable cut and is unprofitable. Private land is also an issue. BC has enough foresters, silviculturists, politicians, large companies and communities to recognize the challenges. We must come to terms with the new reality. We must manage our forests to protect our people and communities. Where is the leadership? Jim Belsham Cranbrook

Growing trees for climate change Disagreements persist on the extent of humanity’s role in the current changes to B.C.’s climate, and our ability to influence it, as many readers have told me in the past week. But almost everyone seems to agree that growing more and healthier forests is a good strategy. I would add that harvesting and building with wood preserves its captured carbon, a fact not much discussed in emotional appeals against logging. The B.C. government is finally spending some money on community fuel load removal projects this year, after an initial flurry following the Kelowna fires of 2003 faded in hard times. But the effects of decades of fire suppression in a fire-dependent forest system remain, as northern B.C. and Alberta are showing us again. There is some positive news here. A Victoria-based government research team has published a study that calculates B.C.’s pine beetle-damaged forests are regenerating more quickly than expected. Warmer temperatures, increased precipitation and the “fertilizer effect” of more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are factors. “By 2020, the enhanced growth due to climate change and increased CO2 more than compensates for the carbon loss from dead, rotting trees,” said lead researcher Vivek Arora of the Canadian Centre for Modeling and Analysis. This recovery even over-

Pine beetle-affected trees burn in the B.C. Interior in 2014. Forests are recovering from beetle epidemic more quickly than expected, partly due to the “fertilizer effect” of extra CO2 in the atmosphere. comes the projected increase in forest fire loss that comes with gradually increasing temperatures and drier periods. The federal government is still working on its plan to meet greenhouse gas reduction targets BC VIEWS agreed to in Paris last year. But the Tom forest industry Fletcher has stepped up with its own goal. I spoke last week with Derek Nighbor, president of the Forest Products Association of Canada, after he announced his industry’s “30 by 30 Climate Change Challenge.” That’s a goal to reduce the industry’s net carbon emissions by 30 megatonnes a year by 2030. That would be 13 per cent of the Canadian government emission target. One of the main strategies is salvage harvesting and developing more products that use wood. “It’s basically trying to use

every part of the tree,” Nighbor said. “In forest operations right now, this is where we see a big part of the opportunity. Instead of the residual branches and whatnot just being left aside and slashing and burning, bring more of that out and turn it into something.” That something might be a console in a luxury car constructed with wood fibre, or an 18-storey wood student residence building planned for the University of B.C. The other is improving forest growth. Logging operations have long been required to replant areas they cut, not just in B.C. but across Canada. Another way to improve forest carbon capture is with more productive species, with genetic techniques that increase resiliency as well as wood mass. A background paper from the B.C. forests ministry responds to common misconceptions about forest carbon, including the idea that logging should be stopped to maximize

storage. “Maximizing carbon storage in the ecosystem would make sense only if society stopped building new homes, acquiring new furniture and consuming in general,” it says. “If the flow of forest products stops, society will turn to other products with higher greenhouse gas footprints, e.g. plastics, metal or concrete. In addition, if harvesting stopped and we continued to suppress natural disturbances, there is increased potential for larger catastrophic disturbances in the future.” If Canada wants to make a bigger contribution to reducing greenhouse gases, forests are a good area to focus on. At 348 million hectares from the B.C. coast to Newfoundland, they represent nine per cent of the world’s forests. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

The Dramatic Life

Navigating the perils of room-mating Cranbrook Community Theatre’s ‘The Odd Couple’ A le esha Ko ers en

A

fter seeing Cranbrook Community Theatre’s production of “The Odd Couple,” I have created a new rule for my life: anything that happens after accidently walking in on a belly dancing class is sure to be great. “The Odd Couple,” by Neil Simon, opened last Friday at the Studio/Stage Door. The theatre is a converted historical building, packed with all of its original charm. The intimate space makes for an enjoyable and cozy experience for the audience and those on stage. For those who are not aware (don’t worry, I was one of you a few days ago), “The Odd Couple” chronicles the

Cranbrook Community Theatre’s “The Odd Couple” runs May 11-14 and 18-21 at the Stuiod Stage Door. unlikely pairing of two divorced men as they try to navigate “room-mating.” At the offset, Felix Unger finds himself without a place to live. After some undeniably laugh-worthy moments from the whole ensemble, Oscar Madison proposes that the two of

them live together in his apartment. Anyone who has ever experienced a l e s s - t ha n - d e s i ra b l e roommate will find themselves relating to the play and busting a gut throughout. Without giving too much away, Felix and

his compulsive tendencies clash with Oscar, who has taken very well to his new bachelor life. Not only is the relationship between Oscar and Felix threatened but also the fate of their entire gang. The play was extremely well cast. All

players seemed at home in their characters, making the play enjoyable and refreshing. Oscar’s apartment serves as the main set. Bob McCue, who designed the set and directed the play, did a wonderful job of creating an environment for

a fun theatre going experience. All this is to say that anyone in the Cranbrook area looking for a good laugh should definitely check out “The Odd Couple,” featuring local actors Peter Schalk, Bob Wakulich, Michelle McCue, An-

drea Grossman, Alexander Gilmour, Barry Borgstrom, Barry Coulter and Randy Tapp. You can catch the play May 11-14 and 1821. Tickets can be purchased at Lotus Books or the door. All shows start at 8 pm.

Kootenay Ice bring goaltender Payton Lee home Veteran goaltender returns to Cranbrook to finish out Western Hockey League career in front of friends and family

Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

From Peyton Krebs to Payton Lee, the Kootenay Ice have provided plenty for fans to be excited about since Thursday morning. After selecting the highly-touted Krebs with the first-overall pick at the WHL Bantam Draft, the Ice announced the acquisition of the hometown kid Lee Monday afternoon, sending a conditional sixth-round pick (2017) to the Edmonton Oil Kings in exchange for the 19-yearold goaltender. “That was our No. 1 priority heading into the off-season — we felt we had to get some experience at that position with Declan Hobbs,” said Jeff Chynoweth, president and general manager of the Kootenay Ice, Monday afternoon. “There’s an overabundance of 1996born goaltenders available in the Western Hockey League… I know what his character and what his make up is. We thought he would be a great fit for our organization, not only for him to come home and have a chance to finish his WHL career, but also be a leader and mentor for not only Declan Hobbs, but the rest of our group as well.” Chynoweth’s son, Ryan, a Kootenay Ice alumnus, played minor hockey with Lee growing up in Cranbrook, providing great insight for the Ice GM. With veteran puckstopper Wyatt Hoflin

graduating from the WHL at the conclusion of the 2015-16 season and 17-year-old Hobbs carrying only 26 games of experience and not necessarily ready for the rigours of the full-time starter role, Chynoweth nabbed the 6-foot-1, 191-pound Lee, who comes home for his final WHL sojourn with 169 career regular season games and 10 career post-season contests under his belt.

“Thanks to everyone involved with the @EdmOilKings for all the support last season,” Lee tweeted Monday. “My time in Edmonton is something I’ll never forget! “With that being said, I couldn’t be more excited about coming home to play with the @ WHLKootenayICE, very thankful for the new opportunity!” After facing the pressure of playing in a major market as a 16-year-old with the Vancouver Giants, Lee now stares down the challenge of taking to the crease in a small market that happens to be his hometown, a place where the magnifying glass is mighty large.

“He’s been away for a long time and I think he knows the pressures involved to play goal in the Western Hockey League, especially in a major market like he did in Vancouver and in Edmonton,” Chynoweth said. “I think he can handle anything that’s thrown at him. It’s a great opportunity for him to finish his WHL career in front of family and friends.”

“He knows the pressures involved to play goal in the Western Hockey League...I think he can handle anything that’s thrown at him. It’s a great opportunity for him to finish his WHL career in front of family and friends.” Jeff Chynoweth Kootenay Ice The conditional sixth-round pick headed to the Oil Kings is a bit of a complicated matter. The selection could become a fifth-round pick based on availability. The Ice are set to receive a fifth-round pick in 2017 from the Seattle Thunderbirds in exchange for defenceman Bryan Allbee. That deal was struck prior to the 2016 WHL trade deadline. As it stands, the Thunderbirds do not have a fifth-round selec-

tion to send to the Ice. Should that change, the Ice will send said fifth to the Oil Kings. If not, the Oil Kings will receive a sixth-round selection from the Ice. Lee was unavailable for further comment prior to print deadline Monday afternoon. Turning 20 years old in June, Lee spent the first three seasons of his WHL career with the Giants, who selected him with the 28th-overall pick in the second round of the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft. In 2015-16, the soft-spoken Cranbrook native played 11 games with the Giants before being shipped off to the Oil Kings in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick on Nov. 5, 2015. Over the course of 39 games split between Vancouver and Edmonton, the 6-foot-1, 191pound Lee went 12-203-1 with a 3.36 goalsagainst average (GAA), .886 save percentage (SP) and one shutout. With a career record of 62-86-7-4, he has posted a 3.39 GAA, .884 SP with six shutouts. Lee previously represented Canada as a member of Team Pacific at the 2013 IIHF World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Quebec, earning a silver medal in the process. The last local product to suit up for the Kootenay Ice was Ryan Chynoweth (2013-14 to 2014-15), who is in the midst of chasing a national Junior A championship with the RBC

The Brandon Wheat Kings are halfway to claiming the Ed Chynoweth Cup. The Western Hockey League’s Eastern Conference champions made the most of home-ice advantage during Games 1 and 2 of the WHL title match, edging the Western Conference-champion Seattle Thunderbirds in back-to-back outings Friday and Sat-

urday night at Westman Place in Brandon. Friday, the Wheat

Kings eked out a 3-2 overtime triumph in Game 1, with Tanner Kaspick striking 6:28 into the first extra period, giving his squad a 1-0 series advantage. Wheat Kings

goaltender Jordan Papirny made 31 saves to backstop his club. In Game 2, overtime

was once again required and this time it was veteran forward Jayce Hawryluk propelling his team to a second consecutive 3-2 triumph when he beat Thunder-

birds goaltender Landon Bow 6:56 into the extra period. The Thunderbirds will try to claw back into the series as it shifts back to Kent, Wash., with Game 3 slated for Tuesday night (8:05 p.m. Mountain). Game 4 is scheduled for Wednesday (8:05 p.m. Mountain) in at the ShoWare Centre in Kent. If necessary, the series will return to Brandon’s Westman Place for Game 5 (Friday, May 13).

Dynamiters name Derek Stuart new head coach, general manager Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

The Kimberley Dynamiters Hockey Club has found its new bench boss and didn’t have to go very far to find him. Derek Stuart, 39, has been named the successor to Jerry Bancks, taking over as head coach and general manager of the Kimberley Dynamiters, following six seasons in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). Stuart, a native of Calgary, has strong Kimberley connections, having spent three seasons (1995 to 1998) playing for the Dynamiters during the club’s Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League days, two of which came under the tutelage of the outgoing Bancks. “It’s very exciting for me, as well as for my wife and daughter,” Stuart said over the phone Monday morning. “I have a lot of family in Kimberley, and friends. I played there for three years, so it’s really exciting for me to come back and get a chance to

work with a team that gave me an opportunity as a player and a town that means a lot to me. “It’s a top-notch organization in the KIJHL, which was important. It’s run really well and it’s had lots of success over the past few years. Jerry [Bancks] has obviously changed the culture and how things are done there.” Of particular note, Stuart is a cousin of Jeff Keiver, who served alongside Bancks as an assistant coach with the Dynamiters. According to Kimberley Dynamiters vice-president James Leroux, Stuart signed a two-year contract with the club, including a mutual option for a third year. Additionally, Leroux said the club received over 50 applications for the position. “We’re in the business of developing players and coaches,” Leroux said Monday morning. “If he gets an outstanding offer from somebody, we don’t want to

years, so we need to continue that. It’s very important to the board. “If we can skate well into the third period and we’re not quite as skilled, sometimes we’re going to win those games.” Outside of recruitment and replacing the likes of Jason Richter, Tyson Brouwer, Jordan Busch, Eric Buckley, Jared Marchi and a host of other key cogs vacating the Dynamiters core, Stuart knows he will be challenged in learning the ins and outs of the KIJHL, but has the utmost confidence he will get up to speed before the puck drops this fall. Stuart has not yet set a date for his move to Kimberley, but plans to be in town for the team’s annual general meeting (AGM) May 18. When he does arrive full-time, he will bring with him wife Erin and daughter Blake. “The town, obviously, is great. There was unbelievable fan support [when I played], which I understand hasn’t changed,” Stuart said, reminiscing on his playing days in Kimberley. “The town was fantastic. I met a lot of good friends and still keep in touch with probably three or four guys from these teams and see them quite frequently here. It was a great experience, all around, for the three years I was there. That’s a big reason why I applied in Kimberley — I knew the town and knew the fan support was outstand-

ing. “Generally, when Jerry Bancks and Jeff [Keiver] are involved, I’m coming into a situation that I don’t have too change too much in regards to the culture.” For the time being, Stuart has not made any concrete decisions regarding assistant coaches, but it is believed Keiver will return to the bench as an assistant after originally having planned to take a break from hockey. Stuart said he will also meet with Byron Garrels and Todd White, who served with Bancks and Keiver as assistant coaches, when he visits for the AGM. With that, a new era of Kimberley Dynamiters hockey begins as Stuart takes the helm, following in the footsteps of his former coach. By the sounds of it, this apple doesn’t fall too far from the proverbial tree. “My expectations are high, I don’t really believe in a rebuild year,” Stuart said. “If you get the recruits in there and you get the right kids in there, I don’t see why a place like Kimberley can’t have success each and every year. That’s my goal heading in there this year.” Outside of his playing days with the Dynamiters, Stuart suited up for Bemidji State University (NCAA) and won a national championship with the Mount Royal Cougars (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference).

O’Reilly scores twice as Canada routs Belarus at hockey world championship C arol Schr am Canadian Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia - Buffalo Sabres forward Ryan O’Reilly scored twice as Canada remained unbeaten at the world hockey championship with an 8-0 rout of Belarus Monday. Playing their third game in four days, the Canadians (3-0) followed a similar pattern to previous wins over the United States and Hungary. Canada allowed Belarus to keep the score close through 20 minutes before breaking the game open with four second-period goals.

The Canadians used a balanced attack, with seven different scoring in all situations. O’Reilly’s first two goals of the tournament came from a second-period short-handed marker that was ruled to have deflected into the net off his skate following a pass from Boone Jenner, then an own goal off the skate of a Belarusian defender at 1:26 of the third. Derick Brassard, Matt Duchene and Michael Matheson all scored with the man advantage as the Canadian power play went 3-for-5, while Corey Perry, Taylor Hall and Mark Stone contrib-

uted at even strength. Kevin Lalande, a 29-year-old native of Kingston, Ont., was lifted from the Belarusian net at the 11:39 mark of the second period after giving up five goals on 18 shots. Dmitri Milchakov stopped 19 of 22 shots the rest of the way. Cam Talbot was perfect in Canada’s net, making 13 saves for his first shutout of the tournament. After outscoring their opponents 20-2 in their first three games, Canada sat at the top of the Group B standings with nine points, pending a later game between 2-0

Finland and the Americans. Slovakia, also 2-0, will face Germany on Tuesday. In Group A action in Moscow, Russia beat Latvia 3-0 to move to 2-1 in the tournament, while Sweden faced off against the Czech Republic. Canada next plays Germany on Thursday.

Tonight: It is your call. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You could be suppressing a need to handle a problem in your own way. A problem is likely to arise if you don’t address the issues as you would like to. As a result, you could become very angry. Open up to new perspectives and a more flexible style. Tonight: Pace yourself. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You have the ability to make major changes, if you so choose. Someone close to you could make some suggestions, but in a grumpy and difficult way, which is likely to make you recoil. Stay upbeat, and don’t allow this person to get the best of you. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar

Dear Annie: What is the polite thing to do with a guest who carries a gun? I do not like guns in my house, but I have a friend who adamantly refuses to leave his gun at home when he comes here. Do people who carry a concealed weapon have an obligation to notify the host before entering their residence? -- Pennsylvania Dear Pennsylvania: Yes. More importantly, it’s your house. You get to set the rules, and if you don’t want guns, say so. You can’t force him to be honest about having a concealed weapon, but you certainly can inform him of your preferences. If your friend won’t leave home without his gun, you can ask him to put it in a drawer, cabinet or closet that you can lock. If he insists on wearing it in your house when you have asked him not to, we’d politely tell him to leave. If he says he won’t visit anymore unless he can bring his gun, regretfully say that you’ll miss him. People who are guests in your home should be respectful of their hosts. Dear Annie: I would like to share some additional thoughts in regard to the letter from “Befuddled Grandma,” whose grandchild has a food allergy, and who was unable to buy treats for her other, allergy-free, grandchild. We have a young grandchild with a life threatening milk allergy. According to Food Allergy Research and Education, 1 in 13 children has a food allergy. Unfortunately, many people do not know about or understand the seriousness of an allergic reaction. It can be more than itchy hives or an upset stomach. In our case, my grandchild can go into anaphylactic shock, which can lead to death. It is stressful for families. Reading food labels is a must, as allergens can crop up in unexpected places. There is often cross-contamination in processed foods, and in food preparation in homes and restaurants. It is not required by law for food companies to disclose if multiple foods are processed on shared equipment. Sensitivity and understanding are tremendously appreciated by those dealing with a serious food allergy. Inclusion is important so that children are not made to feel left out when so many activities involve food. Perhaps schools (and others) will consider eliminating food treats altogether and choose some other “reward.” You often don’t know that a child has a food allergy until there is a first-time reaction, which can result in an unexpected life-threatening situation. For more information, please tell your readers to look at foodallergy.org. The website covers such topics as food culprits, treatment of reactions, how to manage allergies, foods and their ingredients, and alerts. We can all help. -- Concerned Food Allergy Advocate Dear Concerned: People often think food allergies are minor, or worse, optional. They think it’s silly to have to cater to all of these food issues, and we hope your letter will open their eyes. We especially like your idea of nonfood prizes and treats, not only because it eliminates the danger of anaphylaxis, but also because it helps re-program kids to stop rewarding themselves with unhealthy, high-calorie edibles. NEWS Government boosts distracted driving fines, points Tom Fletcher Black Press

A first offence for checking your phone while driving will cost B.C. drivers $543 when new penalties take effect June 1. The fine for distracted driving goes up from $167 to $368, and drivers will also be assessed four penalty points, triggering another $175 charge. The combination results in a total penalty of $888 for a second offence within a year of the first. Public Safety Minister Mike Morris said the new penalties put B.C. near the top of distracted driving fines for Canadian provinces. Two tickets in a year will also trigger an automatic review by the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles that could result in licence suspension. Public consultation over the past year found support for a tougher approach. “A lot of the input that we had indicated even higher penalties than that,” Morris said. Transportation Minister Todd Stone said the public awareness campaigns have not convinced enough people of the dangers of trying to

Central Saanich Police Chief Les Sylven, president of the B.C. As-

sociation of Chiefs of Police, reminded drivers that being at a stop light or stuck in a traffic jam does not mean the distracted driving penalties don’t apply. NDP public safety critic Mike Farnworth said the government

didn’t need to take a year to increase one of the lowest distracted driving penalty systems in the country, and giving the superintendent discretion over multiple repeat offenders doesn’t send a clear enough message.

Bull River Shooters host great club match Br adLEY Wood

Saturday, April 16, saw another 32 shooters show up for the second match of the season! It was a beautiful day at our range near Fort Steele and everyone was excited for another day of shooting with friends from near and far. We had shooters visiting from Calgary and Lethbridge and even as far away as Grand Forks! A lot of years see us shooting in the snow during our April Match so t-shirts were a real treat this year! Results are as follows:

We would especially like to congratulate and welcome another new very young shooter: 10 year old Chance Gillard joined us for the day and sure did have fun shooting off the bench! On Sunday, 14 shooters gathered for a High Power match: • 1st Kalvin Marsh 29/40 • 2nd Jeramey Marsh 23/40 • 3rd Jason Marsh 20/40 (won in a shootout with his son Jordan!) Remember, the high power match is shot freehand at targets set at 200, 300, 385 and 500 metres. Needless to say, hitting a target is an exciting and pleasing result!
