A man was handcuffed and dragged from a Langley Township council meeting by RCMP Monday. He began shouting at council members moments after the evening meeting began. Mayor Jack Froese called for him to allow the meeting to continue, then asked police to remove him. A plainclothes RCMP officer cuffed the man, then dragged him out of the council chambers and into the foyer. The man did not fight, but passively resisted and would not stand up or walk. He shouted about gas chambers and swore as he was pulled from the room, and referred to the RCMP as the “Royal Conservative Goon Squad.” He was removed from the Township hall under the Municipal Act, and was then released without charges, said Cpl. Holly Largy, the spokesperson for the Langley RCMP. Froese revealed there has been an RCMP presence at meetings for the past year, in case there were serious disruptions. He said the Township council may look at hiring security, rather than using police resources. The man has disrupted meetings in the past by speaking at length, accusing local officials of undermining or disregarding the will of the people, and of breaking laws. He has been a frequent presence at council meetings over the past two

Matthew Claxton/Langley Advance

The man arrested at Monday night’s Township council meeting was released later without charges. years, and at various political events around Langley, including provincial and municipal debates, for several years longer. This is the first time he has interrupted a meeting in this way, said Froese. He recalled that the man was at last week’s meeting as well, but spoke only once and didn’t cause a serious problem. At public hearings, it is not uncommon for the arrested man to speak numerous times. He usually reads the same pre-prepared script, accusing council of violating the law. Attempts by the mayor

or councillors to ask him to stick to the topic of the rezoning usually do not meet with success. According to a multi-page letter the man sent to council and local media earlier, he seems to have been upset that a regular council meeting was scheduled for the second Monday of the month. Typically, council meetings are scheduled for the first and third Mondays of each month, and public hearings for the second Monday. On May 9, both a regular meeting and a public hearing were scheduled.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is life-altering, incurable, and affects more Canadians than any other people in the world. This is what makes this Sunday’s 2016 Langley Scotiabank MS Walk starting at Douglas Park all the more important – to help all those in Langley and across the nation who live with a disease that attacks the central nervous system and causes symptoms such as loss of balance, impaired speech, extreme fatigue, vision impairment, changes in mood and cognition, and impaired mobility. On May 15, walkers will head south through Langley City, with a short route totalling three kilometres. Those up for more of a challenge can complete the route a second time for a total of six kilometres. Back at the finish area, also at Douglas Park, walkers can enjoy snacks and refreshments, music, and family-friendly activities. Check in time is 8 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m. at Douglas Park, 20550 Douglas Cres. Participants are able to register for the walk on site. People using wheelchairs, scooters and strollers can take advantage of the accessible route option. As of this week, 90 walkers and 12 teams had pre-registered and raised $15,446 for the cause. To register or volunteer online for the Langley walk, search “Langley Scotia MS Walk” on the Google search engine and then enter the site. Every year, more than 40,000 Canadians in more than 160 communities across Canada take part in the walk, and raise vital funds for people living with MS. In total, walks are taking place in 19 communities across B.C. and the Yukon on May 15. For more information about TeamMS, contact Maureen Brown at or at 604-6023243 or 1-800-268-7582 ext. 7243. More than 40,000 Canadians take part in the annual walk.

FORT MCMURRAY

Locals pack truck for fire victims Local movers hauled relief supplies to displaced Albertans.

James Cousineau, front, prepared a box for a truck headed to Edmonton, Alta., to help displaced Fort McMurray residents.

MATTHEW CLAXTON mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

A local moving company filled a truck with donations for the displaced people of Fort McMurray Friday, collecting more than 20,000 pounds of goods. “The truck was slightly over-weight,” said James Cousineau of Kary Movers. Cousineau headed off to Edmonton Friday evening, and after a switch to a new truck necessitated by mechanical issues, got there on Sunday morning. The goods were dropped off with Alberta Emergency Services for distribution to the approximately 80-90,000 residents displaced by the wildfires still raging around the oilsands community. The wildfire has destroyed parts of the town and continues to rage, and it’s uncertain when or if residents will be able to return. Thousands of people are now staying with relatives, or in temporary accommo-

dations including at the Northlands exposition site in Edmonton. Cousineau made a special visit to Northlands after dropping off the majority of the donated goods. One donor gave him a huge number of Mother’s Day cards. The cards were given to displaced kids so they could have something to give their mothers on Sunday. Most of the truck was full of the items residents had

ROB’S

to leave behind in the sudden evacuation last week: new socks and underwear, non-perishable food, toiletries, pet food, and diapers and formula. After the announcement that donations were being collected Friday in Langley, dozes of people turned out with cars and vans loaded with goods. Cousineau said overall more than 20,000 pounds worth of items were donated. “It was a huge success,”

he said. One woman called Cousineau on Friday to let him know she was heading to Costco with $600 she’d collected from friends and neighbours. Lisa Kilborn and several co-workers from Star Rentals brought two trunks full of diapers and toiletries. Their boss arrived at work Friday morning with money and told them to go shopping. “Love it,” she said of the feeling of helping out. Like many locals, Kilborn has a friend who was evacuated from Fort McMurray ahead of the wildfires. For Cousineau, it’s just about seeing the scope and scale of the disaster and wanting to do something. The firm recently opened a branch in Edmonton. “We try to give where we live,” he said. At stops along the route, people were invited to write on the truck with dry erase pens, adding messages of support for the Fort McMurray residents. The event was so successful that Cousineau is considering another collection, this time in Vancouver and Abbotsford, with another truck to head up this coming weekend.

Coming to Fort’s aid

What’s in Store

There are dozens of local franchise and chain businesses offering to help the fire victims in Fort McMurray. And kudos to all. White Spot, for instance, gave $2 for burger platter sold Wednesday to the Red Cross. PetSmart is collecting donations until May 20 for the pets (and their families) displaced by this tragic wildfire that devastated the north Albertan town. Mr. Mikes donated $5,000 to the Red Cross’ relief efforts and is offering a ROXANNE HOOPER 50-per-cent discount to fire victims. And every bank and financial institution, it seems, has stepped up. We are hearing about all kinds of corporate generosity, and thanks to all getting involved. But there’s an ugly side to everyone’s kindness. The Competition Bureau is warning people to beware of the scammers. > More: langleyadvance.com, search “scam’

how it went,” show organizer Andria McAuley said immediately after the awards. “It was humbling to have the opportunity to take a step back and celebrate some incredible youth.” Co-founders Dan Bennett and Rod Wainwright were impressed that about 250 people turned out for the first-ever SASSY event. The youth awards presentations were interspersed with performances, including a drumming welcome from the Kwantlen First Nation, a dance performance by members of the Kick-ItUp-A-notch studio, two performances by Circus Lab ath-

letes, and numerous performances by the Langley-based Her Brothers band. Two of the nominees, Jordyn Laird and Elly Choi, also made a presentation about youth homelessness, explaining a local task force’s efforts and its quest to create a youth shelter in Langley. “We thought that it went exceptionally well,” Bennett said of the show. He noted that before the night was over committee members were already talking about and planning for next year’s awards show. “I think we can call it an unequivocal success,” Bennett added.

LABOUR

Saturday’s family festival was all about science.

MATTHEW CLAXTON

KPU overrun with curious kids Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) held one of the 300 events in 30 cities across Canada during Science Rendezvous on Saturday. Science Rendezvous took over KPU in Langley, Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, and UBC in favour of space balloons, bottle rockets, and edible DNA. As well, for the second year, Science Rendezvous conducted a Canada‐Wide Experiment. Eight sites released high-altitude balloons into space to take a snapshot of Canada’s atmospheric health. The results will be analyzed by researchers at the University of Regina and presented at festival event sites. This year’s Science Rendezvous activities launched the 10-day Science Odyssey series in partnership with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). More than 200,000 people attended Science Rendezvous events across Canada last year.

Low wage boost mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Ashton Court said “hi” to a mechanical hand on display at Langley’s Kwantlen Polytechnic University during the Science Rendezvous on Saturday. Physics instructor Flavio Ruiz built the hand. British Columbia will no longer have Canada’s lowest minimum wage after a 40 cent increase taking effect in the autumn. On May 4, the province announced the increase from $10.45 to $10.85. Another 30 cents comes spring 2017. Based on the Consumer Price Index, an increase of 10 cents would have been automatic this year. The government said there is room to increase it faster due to a booming economy. “B.C.’s economy is expected to lead the country in economic growth this year and next,” Minister for Jobs Shirley Bond said. Business associations pushed back. “This is a rather hefty jump,” said Lynn Whitehouse, executive director of the Greater Langley Lynn Chamber of Commerce. Whitehouse “For our businesses, the botchamber tom line is the need for certainty and predictability,” said Maureen Kirkbride, interim CEO of the BC Chamber of Commerce. “Quite simply, we need to take the politics out of minimum wage increases.” The government paired the increase with a 40 per cent cut in the small business tax. By 2017-18 a small business making $100,000 will pay $1,500 in taxes, down from $2,500. The BC Federation of Labour said the increase was not enough. It is pushing for a $15 per hour minimum wage. It is currently the lowest in Canada, compared to $11.20 in Alberta, $11.25 in Ontario (with an increase to $11.40 scheduled for this fall) and $10.75 in Quebec. > More at langleyadvance.com, search ‘wages’

ur governments often have trouble acknowledging inflation and the power of the wealthy. They pooh-pooh the idea of eliminating political donations from businesses and unions – even though it’s obviously a good idea – and they leave welfare and minimum wage rates stagnant for years, ignoring the skyrocketing cost of living. That applies to penalties and traffic tickets as much as any other segment of government action. The sharp increase in fines for distracted drivers announced earlier this week will, unfortunately, not eliminate the texting driver from B.C.’s roads. If jacking up the fines was all it took, we could increase fines for speeding through school zones, drunk driving, and texting to $1 million per infraction. Problem solved! So raising the fine from $167 to $368 minimum won’t stop everyone from using Twitter while heading down Highway One at 130 km/h. But hopefully a few of those tickets, plus the four points on their driver’s licences, plus the escalating fines for additional tickets, will give a some people pause. If you went back 20 years, a $167 ticket would have been a considerable burden to many, especially new drivers. In the 1980s and ’90s, many teenagers were buying their first cars for not much more than that. (They weren’t great cars.) Jacking up the cost of tickets isn’t just about sticking it to awful drivers, it’s about acknowledging that too many people can shrug off the cost of a $167 ticket. Some can still deal too easily with the more expensive penalties. For them, we’re glad the province is also looking to review the licences of chronic distracted drivers. – M.C.

pull their advertising if the story of their errant behaviour was published. While such stories would not be killed for a buck, the editor in charge of placement of stories wouldn’t know which ads were running where, so we couldn’t put a story next to an ad to either boost or blast an advertiser, even if we wanted. Both for ethical and logistical reasons, the left hand seldom knew what the right hand was doing. Today, a birth announcement next to a wedding write-up for the same couple wouldn’t raise many eyebrows. But years ago, such an accidental placement raised threats of a lawsuit. I was amused by an online story about a Florida lawyer disbarred for having sex with “too many” of her clients in jail, accompanied by an ad for an “experienced criminal lawyer” in Vancouver – placed together from across a continent. How will your gift save a life today?

Planning escape from Willoughby Dear Editor,

I whole-heartedly concur with Ras Gosse’s letter [Willoughby’s uniqueness is lost, May 5 Letters to the Editor, Langley Advance]. We moved to Langley three years ago this past January (2016). Upon signing our contract of sale for the property in the preceding October 2012, we received a notice of develop-

ment in the Willoughby area. We attended the open house hosted by the Langley Township planners and were baffled by the lack of green space being protected. We asked them point blank “where are the parks?” and they just smiled. To the untrained eye, it was apparent that there were no plans for green space in the documents we reviewed.

I recall hearing that Langley was going to “learn from Surrey’s mistakes and not allow developers to take over.” Well, in my humble opinion, that boat has sailed. We moved here from Surrey, for the purpose of experiencing the beauty of Langley and unfortunately have already begun to plan our escape.

Irony of Township’s ‘Arbour Day’ celebration (almost) laughable Dear Editor,

On April 24, the municipality celebrated Community Arbour Day as reported in the Langley Advance on April 21. The Township page stated “Join the 14th Annual Celebration that highlights the importance of trees and the urban forest… showcasing many ways trees contribute to the environment and the well being of the community.” The hypocrisy lies in the fact that the mayor and his friends on council are intent on dismantling Brookswood/Fernridge at the behest of the developers.

The irony is almost laughable, if it wasn’t so unsavoury. The event was held at Noel Booth Park, 36th Avenue and 202nd Street. The forests to the immediate east and west of Noel Booth are slated for demolition under the present development proposals before [the] planning and engineering [department] and thence for rubber stamping by certain members of the council in the majority. Absolute power…

Martin Allen, Brookswood

Fence at end of street an eyesore Dear Editor,

We have lived at East Langley for over 40 years now and for the past two-plus years, have been subjected to this horrible mismanaged project right outside our front door. [East Langley water line.] This has to be one of the worst projects ever foisted on

Langley citizens. The camel’s back has been broken many times by some of the stupidity during this construction, but the final straw is that a blacked-out wire fence has been constructed on Township land that makes the end of our street look like Donald Trump has started his wall.

The black mesh fence would have been OK but the black-out strips inserted into it make it look like a concentration camp! Please have these strips removed so we, the residents, can retain the peaceful semi-rural neighbourhood we once had.

Gridlock will detour Giants fans Dear Editor,

I’m all for the Giants playing at the Langley Events Centre as I live about six blocks away. However, the Township has to step up to the plate to make this work. Both the intersections of 202A Street and 80th Avenue and 200th Street and 80th Avenue are the main exits from the arena. There is such traffic gridlock there during the nearby R.E. Mountain Secondary traffic that I can only imagine 5,000 fans leaving a Giants game all at once. I think fans will attend once and not return unless Langley Township comes up with a plan to fix this. The road structure there is still just rural standards.

A man was handcuffed and dragged from Monday’s Langley Township council meeting by RCMP. He began shouting at the council moments after the meeting began. The man has disrupted meetings in the past by speaking at length, accusing local officials of tyranny. Readers weigh in: Lorraine Trott Baldwin: In all sincerity, while I truly do not condone any sort of violent protest, the level of frustration caused by what we witness in this Township is enough to drive anyone over the edge. Michelle Carduner: Anyone who has to drive on the disaster created by the Township called 208th Street from Walnut Grove to 64th Ave. would probably go postal at one of their meetings. Anvar Amangoulov: Tyranny? I think this is a very first time I hear local officials being accused of such exotic sin. Usually such accusations are significantly more banal. Vicky O’Connor: He mistook it for a Drumpf rally.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Chamber talks transportation at next meet A former mayor will return to discuss TransLink. MATTHEW CLAXTON mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

MLA Peter Fassbender, who oversees TransLink, will talk transit at a meeting hosted by the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce next week. The May 17 dinner meeting will include a Regional

Transportation Update, the chamber announced. The panel will include Fassbender, a former Langley City mayor, TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond, and Louise Yako, president of the B.C. Trucking Association. The panel will talk about transportation issues across the region. TransLink is responsible for both public transit in the region, including buses and SkyTrain, along with the major road network, which includes some sig-

nificant Langley streets. It’s unclear at present how TransLink will fund future improvements. “Join us and learn how the major road network pieces fit together and impact your business,” said chamber president Scott Johnston. The dinner meeting is to take place in the Cascades Casino Resort Ballroom with networking from 5-6:30 p.m. and dinner and presentations to follow. The dinner event costs

$35 for chamber members and $50 for non-members. Registration closes Friday at 5 p.m. To register for the meeting, call the chamber office at 604-530-6656 or visit www.langleychamber.com.

on June 6 from retiring executive director Lynn Whitehouse. Whitehouse oversaw the chamber’s operations for a full 30 years, starting when Expo ’86 was underway. “As a board, we knew that this would be one of the most significant decisions we would be asked to make,” said Johnston. Clark is progressive, innovative, and has more than 18 years of experience in the chamber network, Johnston said.

Clark said she’s looking forward to coming to Langley with her daughter. “I consider Lynn a mentor, as an executive director of a smaller chamber in British Columbia. I have always admired her passion for her community and her commitment to the chamber movement,” said Clark. She is relocating to Langley from Sechelt. Her first major public chamber event here will be the June 9 annual golf tournament.

Hip hop dance has found a home in the town affectionately known as The Place Between. And there are plans to take over Canada, and quite possibly the world. The Street Kings Academy of Dance, an Aldergrove-based hip hop dance studio, is sending three varsity teams to the Canadian Hip Hop Championships being held June 5 at the Chateau Royal in Laval, Que. Crews medalling in Laval have an opportunity to advance to the world championship in Las Vegas in August. The Street Kings will be represented in Quebec by two all-girl teams and one all-boys team, and all of the dancers are between 14 and 17 years old. Led by Street Kings Academy of Dance co-owners and choreographers Paul Otterbein and Darylle Johnson, the academy started in 2013. It has grown exponentially since then, using studio space at Aldergrove’s Kick It Up A Notch Academy of Dance. “We started with 24 kids and

Are you not hearing clearly when a group of people are talking? Many people find that they are no longer able to understand everything being said, particularly when in the company of others. Engineered in Switzerland, the Audéo V hearing aid has been designed specifically to understand speech in group situations. The majority of those surveyed stated that when exposed to considerable background noise they are able to hear that something is being spoken, but can no longer discern precisely what is being said. The words seem blurred and indistinct. But why is that? The effect tends to manifest itself in group situations, especially in restaurants. It is the high-pitched tones perceived at the entrance to the cochlea that determine when you hear things accurately. In the majority of cases these parts of the inner ear are the first to be affected by noise or aging. As the high-pitched tones are no longer perceived well, the auditory centre of the brain begins to struggle to decode language. It’s a bit like an image that doesn’t have enough pixels.

With Audéo V

The Audéo V hearing aids provide considerable reduction in noise allowing you to focus on speech. Developed by Swiss audiologists the Audéo V hearing aid is designed to improve speech comprehension in noise, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can trial the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. During your FREE hearing test, our Hearing Care Professionals will determine how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role the technology called “Autosense OS” plays. This technology can recognize where the person being spoken to is located and can amplify only his or her voice,

while ambient noise is reduced. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing aid can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds, seamlessly adjusting to the listening situation. According to Swiss researchers, this can significantly improve speech comprehension, especially in conversation for the right candidates. Local resident Jim Larsen was sick and in pain. When the local man went to Langley Memorial Hospital last autumn, he was booked for kidney stone removal. During surgery, Dr. Alexandra Perks biopsied his prostate which revealed aggressive stage 3 cancer. Larsen’s was one of more than 7,000 surgeries performed at LMH last year. His experience highlights the hospital’s needs and the reason behind the Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation’s Denim and Diamonds gala, to raise funds for capital equipment. “Right now, we are working without equipment that is considered standard in every other Fraser Health hospital,” explained chief of surgery Dr. Mitra Maharaj. He added that the hospital is working towards more minimally invasive surgeries because compared to traditional open surgeries, they are safer for patients, are less painful, and people heal quicker. “Right now we are lacking

CONTEST

Painting outdoors

A few hundred aspiring artists are converging on downtown Langley this weekend, trolling for just the right spot, just the right muse to get creative. They just might earn themselves some art money and prizes. They’re taking part in the fifth annual Opus Outdoor Painting Challenge happening this Sunday in Langley City. While there are a lot of strict plein air competitions out there, where serious artists can show off their techniques, this event is for artists of all ages and skill-sets, said Ben Tammi, manager of Opus Langley City. It’s meant to get them out, socializing, having fun – maybe having a picnic – and creating some art, Tammi added. Sign up in advance at opusartsupplies.com/ opc, or at the store on May 15. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. with painting starting at 10 a.m., and ending by 3 p.m. The paintings are a specific size. The resulting works are judged between 4 and 4:30 p.m. and there’s prizes for adult, youth and kid categories will be given out at the store at 5 p.m. His art store is one of six Opus sites organizing a challenge, and they’ve set up a painting zone in an eight-block radius of the local store where participants can wander for inspiration. In past, Tammi recalls one painter earned second-place for a picture of the one-way section of the Fraser Highway, where he took the existing scenery and added in a few zombies. “It’s a community event… it’s about families, its about having fun,” he said. Close to 300 registered to participate last year, with 207 returning with finished artwork at the end of the competition. Rules and more details about the competition are available online at opusartsupplies.com/opc. The event goes rain or shine. The store is located in the Langley Mall, off Douglas Crescent, at 5501 204th St. > More at langleyadvance.com, search ‘Opus’

BACK YARDS

Small gardens a big trend Container gardening is taking off due to smaller homes. MATTHEW CLAXTON mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Constrained by smaller yards or life in condos and townhouses, people are taking to container gardening. Russ Bruce, owner of Langley’s Cedar Rim Nursery,

said that it’s also an extension of indoor life to the outdoors – people are spending more time on patios and want to make them into outdoor living spaces. “People’s patios are becoming more like the inside of the home,” said Bruce. A lack of land and a desire for a nice place to hang out has led people to grow everything from fruits and vegetables to flowers, perennials, annuals, bulbs, and more. continued on page A15…

Tips for a Hot Market In this unprecedented market that we find ourselves in, we see many Subject Free Offers being written. If you are going to do this, always seek Legal Advice prior to the presentation of an Offer. Rather than waiving an Inspection, why not take an Inspector to a showing with you, or book them in for a full inspection prior to offers being reviewed. Review all documents prior, and ensure you or your REALTOR® visit the Township/City to check the history of the house. Make sure you’ve seen what comparables sell for and be prepared to bid considerably higher than the list price if necessary. Small gardens a big trend …continued from page A13

Trellised fruit trees, dwarf blueberries and raspberries, and grape varieties that stay under three feet tall have all been developed for smallscale gardening in recent years. “Whatever you can grow in the ground, you can pretty much grow in a pot,” said Bruce. He knows of people who have 20 to 30 containers and are growing an entire garden on a back deck. There are also specialized plants that take up less room. One is a grafted potato-tomato plant sold as Ketchup ’n’ Fries. The top tomato portion produces its fruit first, and then the potatoes develop under the soil later in the summer. Another crop new to the area are cucamelons, which resemble tiny watermelons but taste like tangy cucumbers. Heirloom tomatoes are also popular, both because people want non-GMO plants, but because of the excellent taste, said Bruce. Aside from those who simply don’t have a lot of space, container gardening is also gaining popularity among the elderly Jessica Borthwick at Cedar Rim checked out some of the dwarf grapes suitable and those with limited for container gardening. mobility, said Bruce. work well, since in a ed to get started. containers. NATURAL PROCESSES

BASICS

The real dirt on soil care A thriving garden and healthy lawn need a good foundation.

Make some free fertilizer HEATHER COLPITTS hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com

TROY LANDREVILLE tlandreville@langleyadvance.com

Soil: the engine that makes a garden run. If the soil wears down, or is in poor condition, the plants that rely on it for their survival will suffer greatly. “Soil is very important,” said Port Kells Nurseries’ Stephanie Taylor, whose parents Rene and Joanne Duineveld opened the nursery in 1992. “If soil has no nutrients, your plants aren’t going to survive.” The same applies to your lawn, she added. “Definitely the nutrients in the soil: you have to revamp those every year,” Taylor said. Port Kells Nurseries sells garden soil, which consists of a mix of composted bark mulch, peat, sand, and mushroom manure, which is ideal for any kind of growing, as well as top dressing soil mix that has a higher sand content and is for over-seeding a lawn.

LangleyAdvance

Troy Landreville/Langley Advance

Stephanie Taylor from Port Kells Nurseries stood near garden soil which is sold at the business at 18730 88th Ave. “The garden soil is good for any kind of growing you’re going to do,” Taylor said. “Hedging cedars for privacy, under turf for a new lawn, your vegetables, flowers… everything loves it.” To keep soil healthy, Taylor said a lot of people add mushroom manure or a different type of manure every year “just to revamp your soil, because the plants have fed off those nutrients all last year. So they add mushroom manure and mix it into their soil to just add some new nutrients.”

Taylor said if you don’t maintain and add nutrients, you are going to be left with “dead soil if you don’t take care of it.” “Your hard work is kind of going to be put to waste, if you don’t have good soil,” she said. Making sure of proper drainage is an ongoing challenge for people living on the oft-rainy West Coast of B.C., Taylor said. “They don’t have proper drainage so the plants they have are just drowning,” she said.

IN A GATED COMMUNITY

To worm or not to worm? Should it be worm composting or traditional composting? Both result in nutrient-rich material for the yard and garden. For many people, avoiding worms is a reason not to get into vermiculture (worm composting). But it’s worth consideration by anyone since people don’t have to handle the worms (how and where the compost material is placed within the worm container gets the worms moving in the right direction). The result is nutrient-rich worm poop that has converted the scraps into quality fertilizer. “It’s all personal preference,” explained Heather Lee, who does education for the Langley Environmental Partners Society. Worms need less space but must be brought inside during cold weather. Worm composters can be put on balconies or patios. “It’s a good alternative if you live in a smaller home,” she said of worms. Traditional composting requires yard space and some people have more than one composter so they can rotate their materials (while one pile is decaying, a new pile can be started). One of the easiest ways to learn about composting is to take a LEPS workshop. On May 25, people can take a Backyard Composting workshop. People need to RSVP to

ensure there’s room. Contact garden@leps.bc.ca. “That one is basically Composting 101,” she said. “We’ll do a tour of the demo garden and the different composters we have.” There’s about half a dozen different kinds at the demonstration garden (21000 Fraser Hwy.) and it’s open to the public everyday. The composting workshop is repeated in August. One key thing people will learn is to be green, they need to include brown. About half the mixture should be brown material (newspaper, straw, shredded unbleached paper, kraft paper and grass clipping). Stirring the pile is vital to circulate air and help decomposition. “You should be able to harvest it within two to three months,” Lee explained. She recommends putting the composter in a sunny spot to let the heat of the sun help with decomposition. In LEPS workshops, people will also learn about how to prevent vermin in the composter. “If you’re putting the right ratios in and you’re stirring it, it should attract rodents,” Lee said. It’s easy to get started composting. Langley Township residents can get a deal on 80-gallon composters for $25 and Wing Digger aerator for $15. They are available at the Civic Facility and operations centre. > More at langleyadvance.com, search ‘compost’

This year’s Extreme Home Repair (EHR) project in Aldergrove is officially underway. EHR is a non-profit community service program of Church in the Valley, a Seventhday Adventist Church, which provides home repairs for families in the Township of Langley who are in extreme need. Last Sunday, May 8, saw the first day of construction as roughly 60 volunteers began their work on Sarah Scarrow’s house. Scarrow is a single mom with Mike Dauncey three adopted children, and Aldergrove works full time to make ends Adventist Church pastor meet. Basically, her whole paycheque goes to the mortgage, so she has nothing left to repair her home, explained Aldergrove Adventist Church associate pastor Mike Dauncey “We feel she is very deserving of this gift,” Dauncey added. To celebrate the completed 2016 project, a neighbourhood block party and reveal celebration event is being planned for Victoria Day, May 23 at 5 p.m. at the Scarrow family home, 26981 28A Ave.

because spare ribs have more cartilage and connective tissue). Some additional tips: 1. Remove the thin membrane on the back side (bone side) of the ribs. 2. Apply a thin coat of yellow mustard on both sides of the raw ribs before applying your favourite dry rub. This will help the rub to adhere better and also provide great flavour! 3. For the two-hour steaming, I transfer my ribs into a foil pan with a 1/2 cup of apple juice (but almost any liquid can be used) and seal tightly with foil. The ribs do not need to be submersed fully in liquid – it’s all about the steam. 5. For the last step, remove the racks carefully from the liquid/foil and place them directly on the grill; baste them with your desired barbecue sauce and then cook for the final hour. This will caramelize the sauce onto the ribs.

Flavours of Langley:

Langley Township hosted an Eat Local event Monday at the Township Civic Facility, inviting local shops and food producers to share their wares, from honey and berries to cheeses and meats. Danise Breederland of Gojoy Berries poured a goji berry smoothie made from berries from the farm her family runs in Aldergrove, while Sean Weatherly and Mike Will brought some of the Otter Co-op’s deli section as a sampler.

The ground was pretty unforgiving and made sleeping difficult for Langley’s Chelsea Minhas, who joined 31 other mothers sleeping on the streets of Vancouver last week. They participated in the May 5 Sleep Out event, collecting $118,000 for Covenant House Vancouver’s street outreach program and raising awareness for hundreds of young people who call Vancouver streets their home every day and night.

Paying tribute:

Politicians helped raise a flag for the Day of Mourning on April 28 at Timms Community Centre and Langley City Hall. The annual Day of Mourning is a national event allowing workers and families to come together to remember those who have died at work, and to renew a commitment to healthy and safe workplaces.

Laura Sobol blew out the candles on the cake during her 108th birthday celebration at Langley Lodge on Tuesday.

CELEBRATION

Single life good to 108-year-old TROY LANDREVILLE tlandreville@langleyadvance.com

During her 108th birthday bash Tuesday at Langley Lodge, Laura Sobol didn’t hesitate when asked what the secret was to becoming a centenarian – and then some. “Because I’ve never married,” answered Laura, whose birthday actually fell two days earlier, on May 8. The single life and a lot of faith has guided her through the years. Another secret to her longevity, she said, is “because I prayed, and then I can be a friend of God.” Laura grew up in Vancouver with two brothers and two sisters. Her mother supported the family through tending to a garden and canning vegetables for sale, according to an internal newsletter from Langley Lodge, where she has been a resident for the past two-and-a-half years. She went on to try her hand as a housemaid, then a filing clerk, before formal business training landed her in the pilot’s seat of as many as 10 businesses. Friends and family came out for tea and to help mark Laura’s milestone during a party at Langley Lodge. > More: langleyadvance.com, search ‘Sobol’

What kind of music do you want to hear here? Romani music inspires the next Café Classico concert presented by Langley Community Music School. The NeumannAndrievsky Duo – composed of Alexdra Andrievsky on piano and Andrea Neumann on violin – will dig through years of European music about a much-romanticized and misunderstood people. The Romani people, also known as the gypsies, migrated through Europe hundreds of years ago. Their music, dance, and clothing inspired artists and writers to adopt their own interpretation of the Bohemian lifestyle. The program will include works such as Brahms’ Scherzo, Bartók’s Roumanian Folk Dances, and Ravel’s Tzigane – Rapsodie de Concert. There will be a pre-concert talk hosted by LCMS artistic director Elizabeth Bergmann at 2:30 p.m. The concert begins at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $10 for students. It’s a reunion show of sorts planned this weekend for Brookswood native Daniel Wesley at the Commodore Ballroom in downtown Vancouver. The musician, who has played in numerous bands over the past decades and seven albums, first attended a show at the Commodore on his 19th birthday – when friends took him to see the Matthew Good

be back to celebrate 10 years of music at the Commodore by recording a live album. “It’s legendary. It’s such a magical place and it seems like home,” the 34-year-old father of two told the Langley Advance. He’s planning two sets, starting with a

laid back 90-minute set with his acoustic guitar, then ramping it up with his electric guitar and some 20 party songs in the second set. Going on stage at about 10 p.m., Wesley said “it’s going to be a long night, but it’s going to be a fun night.” He’ll be recording both sets for two separate albums, the first he hopes to release next spring. “I’ve never done a live recording release,” Wesley said, noting family is coming from as far away as Hawaii to be part of this show. > More: langleyadvance. com, search ‘Wesley’

Recovery boat being realized Thanks to a gaming grant, they’ll have a recovery boat in the water this summer. But it will be the donation of silent auction items, the sponsorships, and the purchase of tickets for the Legacy Water Search & Recovery’s third annual golf tournament that will allow the society to outfit that boat with all the necessary equipment to help bring closure to grieving families, said Langley’s Jim Ward. Ward lost his nephew Brendan Wilson, and Brendan’s friend Austin Kingsborough, three years ago in a canoe accident on Nicola Lake. Ward and other family members realized the need for a sonar-equipped search vessel to assist families in helping locate the remains of loved ones lost in the water. Well, three years of work

THE NEWLY REDESIGNED

2016 NISSAN SENTRA® WHEN EQUIPPED WITH FORWARD EMERGENCY BRAKING

We were looking to buy a sedan, we called several dealers including Jonker Nissan. The salesman on the phone was very friendly and polite. We live in Abbotsford but because of how nice Vonn was on the phone we decided to go see him the next day. We were more impressed with his professionalism and how he took care of us, so we bought a brand new Sentra from him. Thank you so much Vonn. Mr. & Mrs. Gill

YES, IT’S A SENTRA AND YES, THAT’S THE RIGHT PRICE. I want to take the time to thank you for the fantastic new Rogue I now drive and LOVE! I like most people dread the thought of coming to a car dealership and being cornered into a something I’m not interested in. However that was far from the case when working with Rena at Jonker Nissan. From the follow-up email to my initial inquiry she was professional and listened to what was interested in. She provided me with several different options with various different price points being sure to point out the different benefits of each option. She was delightful to work with; I didn’t expect to purchase a new vehicle that day but Rena instilled confidence in your organization and the vehicle I wanted so I was very comfortable making that decision immediately and I have not suffered buyer’s remorse on that decision, quite the opposite...I love the new Rogue! Over the last year, as we prepared to transition to retirement, we visited most automotive dealers in the Surrey/Langley/White Rock area in search of the right combination of vehicles that would best serve us. In the spring, we had the good fortune to meet with Les Flewelling from Jonker Nissan. Les presented us with a knowledgeable, straight forward and honest approach. Les quickly gained our trust. In May we took possession of our 2015 Nissan Murano and in September a 2015 Nissan Micra. Between our two purchases, Les also sold one of our children a previously owned Nissan. In retrospect, there is absolutely no doubt that Les and the Jonker Nissan team that supports him was the right choice for us and our family. We have great confidence in recommending Jonker Nissan to others. John

Rena was amazing! She knew all the answers to the many questions… We ended up with the Pathfinder and because she was so thorough we didn’t have any questions at the end. Rena made us feel that our business really mattered to her. We didn’t feel like just another sale which is so nice. This is our 3rd Nissan and we know why! Lisae

3 Reasons to Lease:

You pay for only part of the car you are going to use.

The payment on a lease is made on a much smaller balance than a comparable term loan. The tax is paid as you go, and not up front, as with the purchase. With a lease, you get a smaller obligation and smaller payment, and less taxes.

2

A lease gives you options that give you more control of vehicle costs.

Equity may accumulate due to Nissan’s strong resale value; the value may actually increase! A lease protects you from any loss in vehicle due to any unforeseen price influences (economic conditions, manufacture problems, accident declarations, vehicle loss of popularity, gas consumption, etc). And you can buy out the lease and own the vehicle at any time.

3

A lease can give you better cash flow.

The lease gives you a new car with smaller payments and the ability to cash in on any equity. Smaller payments may allow you to buy that new car (warranty, features, etc) rather than a used one that may involve more maintenance or repairs.

a lifestyle choice that allows you to get more car, more often, with better options and flexibility.

We bought a Nissan Juke and had a wonderful buying experience at Jonkers. Our salesman Mr. Vonn Chan is not pushy and very knowledgeable. We shopped around and Vonn gave us the best deal! Aileen Mendozae

Flip City gymnast shines at Olympic Oval Maya Crutch took first all around in her division at the Western Canadian championships. TROY LANDREVILLE tlandreville@langleyadvance.com

A

fter being sidelined with injuries in 2014/15, Langley gymnast Maya Crutch is having a comeback year. And what a comeback it’s been,

thus far. Thirteen-year-old Maya, who trains out of Walnut Grove’s Flip City Gymnastics at the JOA 8 level (Junior Olympics Artistic), shone at the Western Canadian championships held last weekend at Richmond’s Olympic Oval. Maya took first all around for JOA 8 at a meet that drew many of the top gymnasts from across B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. In Richmond, Maya won gold on floor and bronze on beam while placing fourth on vault and fifth on bars. Team BC won the all around team title, with Maya helping to lead the way. This caps off a very successful year at the JOA 8 level for Maya, who is coached at Flip City by Alana Jensen, Toma Flaviu, Rusty Pierce, and Tracy Lee. Maya said her coaches have inspired confidence in her through the years. “I have had a lot of coaches over my seven years [of competitive gymnastics],” she said. “They have all helped me a lot. Some have given me discipline, some toughness, some calmness, love in their own way, and all have given me the confidence that I can be good. It’s always been there but I was just too scared to look for it.” At the BC Winter Games in Penticton, Maya finished fourth all around with her

highest mark of the year on the floor, a 9.6, which earned her the gold medal. “She was quite excited to get a fourth all around at the BC Winter Games trials in December, which was her first competition in more than a year,” Maya’s dad Mike said. “She just kept getting stronger and more consistent as the year progressed after that meet.” uring the recent Gymnastics BC championships at the Langley Events Centre, Maya placed second all around with a gold on floor. Flip City Gymnastics won the all around team competition at that meet, as well. Maya’s other results this year included: Tag Cup: first all around Twisters Invitational: first all around Christy Fraser Memorial: first all around Las Vegas Lady Luck: fourth all around BC Winter Games Trials: fourth all around

D

There is one more competition to go for Maya this year, as she will make the move up to JOA 9 level and compete at the Ogopogo meet in Kelowna in June. aya’s schedule is hectic to say the least: She is a competitive dancer who also trains at circus. She trains, on average, 18.5 hours per week in gymnastics, 4.5 hours a week in dance, and five hours each week in circus. Maya says she’s drawn to gymnastics for both its social and competitive components. “I am attracted to the sport because I meet different people and friends along the way, especially when you’re in higher levels,” Maya said. “It also keeps me fit and that gives me chances to try other sports.” Maya credited her chiropractor and physiotherapist, both of whom she visits a few times a month, with keeping her body in alignment, relatively pain free, and “compete” ready, her dad noted.

MANAGER - Fraser Valley

HUBBARD, ALBERT WILLIAM (BOB)

for leading building product manufacturer

March 1, 1925 to April 13, 2016

Bob Hubbard passed away peacefully on April 13 at Delta View Habilitation Centre. He was 91. Bob was predeceased by Edith, his wife of 67 years who passed away May 19, 2015, and by sisters Bertha and Emily, brother Tom and brother-in-law Bill. Bob was born and raised in Vancouver and during high school at John Oliver, took an interest in woodworking and mechanics. He was a member of the Air Cadets and in 1942 enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force. After basic and airplane mechanic training, Bob was stationed at the RCAF base in Comox where he met Edith. Six months later, in 1943, Bob was sent overseas and served at two airfields in England repairing Lancasters and Spitfires. He returned to Vancouver at the end of WWII, married Edith and settled on acreage in Brookswood, South Langley where they raised their four daughters. Bob first worked as a power linesman with Hume and Rumble then in residential and commercial construction. When the construction industry crashed in the 60’s Bob managed the Spray Division of Okanagan Helicopters. He later established Transwest Helicopters and Timbertest, working with BC Tel and Hydro. Despite his busy work life, Bob made time for his family, taking his girls and dog camping, boating, fishing and on driving trips. He also made time to participate in various community groups. He was a volunteer fireman, a Kinsman and later a K-40 member, a Mason, Shriner and a supporter of the Legion. Bob was hardworking and a leader and in true “Bob” fashion, he moved up the ranks in the organizations he belonged to – he was the Brookswood Fire Chief for many years, a Kinsman President in the 50’s and Grand Master in the Masons in 1983. Bob and Edith settled full-time at Pender Harbour in 1990 where you’d find Bob happily puttering in his workshop, on his boat, beachcombing and fishing, or at home, entertaining family and friends, always with his dog close by. By the fall of 2013 Bob’s health had failed to the point where he could no longer stay in his beloved home. He moved to Delta View Habilitation Centre while Edith settled in Ladner. Bob is at peace now and reunited with Edith. He is sorely missed by daughters Sharon, Gayle, Fern and Joanne; grandchildren Sarah (Darrell), Seth, Stephen (Sarah), Will, Derek, Kevin and Travis (Claire); great grandchildren Hanna, William, Alexander and Gregory; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends. His community spirit, strength of character and stories remain with us. Special thanks to Dr. Ron Davidson and caregivers at Delta View, and to Dr. Bruce Robinson at Madeira Park. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Bob’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC, the Legion or a charity of your choice. His Celebration of Life will take place on Wednesday, May 18 at 11:00am, at the Town and Country Inn in Delta.
