Notre Dame Drive, a busy east-west thoroughfare in Sahali, is the focus of the next significant city road-construction project.
Get ready for delays on Notre Dame Notre Dame Drive is getting a facelift. The span of road between Hillside Drive and Columbia Street will be under rehabilitation from May 12 until mid-July. Work will include milling and paving, curb and sidewalk repairs and other upgrades.
Capital projects supervisor Darren Crundwell said work will take place mainly during weekdays, with some night work. Work on the westbound lane will run between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., while work on the eastbound lane will take place from 9 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Night work would take place between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. Crundwell said at least two lanes of traffic will remain open throughout the project and transit service and pedestrian access will be maintained.
Mounties nail speeders on familiar routes Another police crackdown on speeding has led to 74 tickets, including at least one vehicle impoundment for excessive speed. Kamloops Mounties targeted the Halston Bridge, Westsyde Road and Parkcrest Road on Tuesday. Const. Jason Epp said there were 59 speeding violations, including one for excessive speed. The driver was travelling across the bridge at 122 km/h in a 70 km/h zone and had the vehicle impounded. In addition, there were five violations for driving contrary to restrictions/failure to display the N associated with the licence, three violations for failing to produce a driver’s licence, two violations for disobeying a traffic sign, two violations for having
tinted windows, one violation for failing to stop at a red light, one violation for following too close and one drug seizure. The speeding operation was the second one in nine days set up in the area by Mounties. On April 29, police handed out 55 tickets and four warnings — including a driver going double the speed limit — on Westsyde Road and the Halston Bridge. One driver was busted for excessive speeding after police clocked a vehicle going 100 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The crackdowns on speeding come following RCMP-organized public forums in April at which speeding was cited by residents as one of their primary concerns.

LOCAL NEWS ALL ABUZZ AT THE SPELLING BEE
Urban Buzz teammates Sarah Mulholland (left) and Stephanie Carter work to get the correct spelling down during the fifth annual Adult Team Spelling Challenge yesterday at Hotel 540. A number of teams — including a group from KTW, were tasked with spelling a number of words that stumped more than a few participants. The final verdict on each spelling was left to the judges in the background: Kamloops RCMP Supt. Brad Mueller (left), Kamloops Fire Rescue Chief Dale McLean and Kamloops-Thompson school district Supt. Karl deBruijn. All funds raised at the spelling bee benefit literacy programs in Kamloops and are part of Interior Community Service’s Raise-A-Reader campaign. DAVE EAGLES/KTW
CONFUSED BY BUILDERS LIENS? A Lack of Clarity Could Cost You Whether you are the owner of real property, a contractor, a tradesperson or a material supplier, builders liens can be a complicated and confusing area of law. However, when used properly, builders liens can also be a highly effective mechanism for resolving construction disputes. Unfortunately, an incomplete understanding of builders liens can result in lost opportunity and additional costs not contemplated by either party.

Get your water wings ready. Kamloops’ spray parks will open a few days ahead of their usual June 1 start this year, thanks to a streak of hot spring weather, which includes a forecast this weekend of sunshine and temperatures nudging 30 C. Shawn Cook, the city’s parks operations supervisor, said water parks at Riverside, Albert McGowan and Westsyde Centennial parks, as well as the Prince Charles Park wading pool, will open for the summer on Saturday, May 28. “We’ve already had Albert McGowan open a few days this year,” said Cook. “Last weekend it was 30 degrees, the weekend before it was 30 degrees and we turned that one on for a bit.” However, the city’s newest water park won’t be ready for that May 28 date. Cook said the city is hoping to have a new spray park and
wading pool at McDonald Park open for July 1. Groundbreaking for the project is expected to take place next week. The McDonald Park spray park will replace the outdoor pool that had been in operation since 1958. Kamloops council voted last month to close the pool, which needed about $200,000 in repairs, including a new boiler and drain, which would have required tearing up the bottom of the pool tank. Brocklehurst’s outdoor pool, which the city also looked at closing, will open for the season on Sunday, May 29. Aquatics supervisor Heidi Ogilvie said hours at the pool are being extended this year, as was requested during a series of neighbourhood meetings on North Shore and Westsyde pools held earlier this year. Ogilvie said lap swim times have the biggest increases this year, with swim times from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
on Saturdays and Sundays from May 29 to June 30. For the first month of operations, public swims will run from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. As it gets ready to turn on its sprinklers, the city is also asking residents to restrict their use at home. Watering restrictions went into effect on May 1 and will remain in place until Aug. 31. Commercial and residential water customers are allowed to water between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. and between 6 p.m. and midnight if they are using a manual watering system. Those with automatic systems can also sprinkle between midnight and 6 a.m. Odd-numbered properties may water on odd days, while evennumbered properties can water on even days. Fines for watering at the wrong time start at $100 for a first offence.

The City of Kamloops may move ahead with one of nine proposals submitted by community groups and developers for the former home of the Kamloops Daily News. “We’re looking at one a little bit closer at this time, but we haven’t closed the door on anything yet,” said director of development and engineering services Marvin Kwiatkowski.
Because city council deals with real-estate matters behind closed doors, it’s not clear which proposal the city is pursuing. When an expression of interest for the Seymour Street property closed last month, real-estate manager David Freeman said proposals were spilt between developers, both from Kamloops and the Lower Mainland, and community groups. Community suggestions have included a sports centre with velodrome and several reconfigurations of the city’s failed performing-arts centre plan, which died in a referendum last November.

THE HOT AND NOT OF THE WEEK Kamloops This Week looks at the stories of the week — the good, the bad and all in-between:
HOT: Electoral reform in Canada. The topic is trending now as the governing Liberals took the first step this week in ensuring last October’s election will be the last under the first-past-the-post system. Critics, including Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo Conservative MP Cathy McLeod, don’t like the Liberal-dominated composition of the electoral-reform committee, nor the decision to not allow residents to weigh in on a new system. The committee will issue its final report to Parliament by Dec. 1. Wherever this takes us, we are living through a monumental time of political change in Canada.
OUR
NOT: Leadfoot drivers in Kamloops who don’t follow the news. Had the 74 people ticketed Tuesday for speeding and other driving infractions picked up a copy of KTW last week, they would have learned Kamloops Mounties had conducted a similar operation on April 29 and have pledged to continue targeting speeders on Westsyde Road, Halston Bridge and elsewhere. Speeding is dangerous and, even if you dismiss that claim, it can be very bad for your wallet.
VIEW
HOT: South Kamloops secondary teacher Carmen Babin for instilling the love of cooking into her students. Babin has entered her class in a cooking-video competition in which you, the KTW reader, can cast a vote to help the local kids in their quest for victory. Go online to bettertogetherbc.ca/contest and check out the videos created by students at South Kam secondary. While there, cast a vote for the local chefs.

A peckish debate at city hall
W
hy did the chicken cross the road? To get far from an interminable council debate on the birds, in all likelihood. After years of talk, including a penultimate round of discussion this week that was as unappetizing as an undercooked bird (and just as tough), Kamloops council finally decided to let the great unwashed weigh in on the issue at a June 14 public hearing. The issue is rather straightforward: should the city allow hens to be kept in backyards of the average home in the urban part of Kamloops? As it stands, only residents with property one acre and larger in size are allowed to toss a few birds in the backyard and cut down on their egg bill. As other communities in B.C. embrace the so-called “food sovereignty” issue and welcome birds, bees and other wonders of Mother Nature, Kamloops has been slow to follow. The debate at city hall Tuesday was so long, so weird and so unnecessary that Mayor Peter Milobar was probably echoing every poor soul witnessing the David Lynchian municipal drama when he shook his head, rolled his eyes and declared the debate to have entered the “ridiculous” zone. He was referring to opposition by some on council who welcome the birds, but object to a plan to spend $10,000 building a chicken/hen pound, developing an education program for
CHRISTOPHER FOULDS

MUSINGS hen owners, training bylaw officers and purchasing specialized chicken-catching equipment. I suppose a pound is necessary, but for $10,000? Seems to me the city has a ready-made chicken prison sitting at Seymour and Fourth. Have bylaw officers toss hen escapees into the old newspaper building, clean the windows for passersby to watch the action and, voila, there’s our performing-arts centre and pound. Add a parkade and we’re all happy. As for specialized chickencatching equipment, I was born and bred in the Fraser Valley and can attest to the fact the only specialized chicken-catching equipment needed are the two limbs at this moment aiding my hands in typing these words. Plus, with the move to extreme automation among our bylaw officers when enforcing parking downtown (is exiting a bylaws car even necessary any more?), chasing a bird down Nicola Street will do wonders for the cardiovascular health of our taxpayer-funded employees.
And, at the risk of inciting the PETA-affiliated readers of KTW, I cannot help but agree with Coun. Tina Lange’s suggestion that wayward hens be scooped up and donated to the dinner table of various animals at the B.C. Wildlife Park. (It’s no surprise, really, since Lange believes “dandelions are people, too!”, whereas chickens are, apparently, merely dinner on two legs.) We’re talking about chickens, not pets like dogs or cats. These are chickens — birds that exist to feed us via the eggs they lay or the bodies they sacrifice in various succulent meals. Nevertheless, communitysafety manager Jon Wilson noted there are standards to meet. “I cannot put chickens in the same facility we keep dogs in,” he told council. “I think the SPCA would consider that inhumane.” Perhaps, but I bet the dogs would consider that delicious. Regardless of what transpires at the June 14 public hearing, we should brace for a human-rights complaint to emerge from this gender-biased idea. The proposed bylaw will allow only hens in our backyards — no roosters allowed, much to the chagrin of members of the He Man Woman Haters Club. I can hear the voice of Foghorn Leghorn now as he rises to speak at next month’s public hearing: “This bylaw’s a joke, ah say, it’s a joke, son.” editor@kamloopsthisweek.com Twitter: @ChrisJFoulds

YOUR OPINION LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
LET’S CREATE A BEAUTIFUL VILLAGE DOWNTOWN Editor: I have had the good fortune to live in the Sagebrush area near downtown Kamloops for a large part of the past four decades. I was able to walk to work at Royal Inland Hospital for 25 years, promoting and encouraging physical health and wellness as a physio. At the same time, my children had the luxury of walking to and from school from kindergarten to Grade 12. Oddly enough, we were even able to have them educated in their native language — English, as it turns out. This ability to walk or bike easily to many of our daily destinations seemed to meld nicely with the Care Bear Save the Planet message that existed in some spheres even before terms like “global warming” and “climate change” were coined. I must confess to still harbouring some resentment that each day on my walk to work, I was confronted with a fence and a “No Pedestrians” sign where the sidewalk in front of the hospital on Columbia Street had been closed
to provide a turning lane so people driving vehicles wouldn’t be inconvenienced. I understand the new configuration at the new RIH parkade will again open the sidewalk to pedestrians. As a physio, I’m pleased to see this and the addition of an elevator, which will allow much easier access to the hospital for those with mobility, respiratory or circulatory challenges. My frustrations now are so far limited to pedestrians waiting twice as long as in the pre-construction era to cross Columbia Street so vehicles again aren’t inconvenienced. The removal of the audible signals for visually impaired citizens, to promote vehicle turning lanes, also rankles. We need to seriously start looking at options for increased urban living situations. I see Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson vowing to set aside $250 million worth of land to provide affordable social housing with the hopes of the feds chipping in $1 billion. In Kamloops, we are blessed with a large tract of provincial land between RIH and Sixth Avenue
ON THE POSITIVE SIDE . . .
IN A PICKLE TRYING TO UNDERSTAND HOW CITY SPENDS OUR CASH
Editor: The great thing about Ajax mine being approved is that with all the dust causing sinus congestion, we won’t be able to smell the pulp mill. Axel Montaner Kamloops
Editor: Why is it that there is no money to fund the outdoor pool in McDonald Park in North Kamloops, yet there is enough public money to install pickleball courts in Riverside Park downtown? Is there such a huge demand for pickleball in Kamloops that taxpayers can supply free courts? Mike Honcho Kamloops
being squandered as surface parking and home to several empty, aging buildings. This area is already home to those living in Ponderosa Place Apartments and Glenfair. Surely we have the creative genius of planners and developers to repurpose this area as a beautiful village within walking, biking scootering distance of downtown. Petersen Creek Park south of Columbia could easily have user-friendly paths to take one right up into the heart of the park. I have been told by more than one person this land is unavailable as most of it is owned by the province. We are citizens of this government and if we determine the best use of our land is to provide affordable social housing, then let’s work toward achieving this. Let us become a model for other communities to emulate, in which we embrace the primacy of people over the rush to be somewhere else in our vehicles. let them play and only make loud noises of encouragement, instead of screaming incoherent, aggressive baloney? That would be splendid. Chad Pearson Kamloops

ASK A FELINE SPECIALIST HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOUR CAT SEE A VET?
Although most kittens or cats are presented to a veterinarian “for shots” soon after they arrive in their new home, many will not see a veterinarian again for 10 to 15 years, when they are elderly and in failing health. Veterinarians suggest that dogs and cats should be seen yearly for a health examination, but we have not always done a good job of explaining why this is a good idea. It could be argued that we don’t go to see our own doctors for a yearly health checkup, so why is this necessary for our pets ? And yet.. the annual office visit is important. Unlike us, our pets cannot describe to us in words how they are feeling. In fact, a cat’s instincts are to hide signs of illness. This makes sense when you consider they evolved from wild cats, for a wild cat that shows signs of illness will soon be eaten by predators. The annual office visit gives the vet an opportunity to do a good physical exam and check the things that are not easy for the owner to check: the ear canals, the teeth, palpating the bladder, checking the cat’s blood pressure, listening to the heart and lungs, and so on. If vaccines and deworming are needed, the veterinarian can administer

them. Even more important, the office visit is an opportunity for you to discuss the details of your cat’s lifestyle and behaviour, it’s interaction with other cats and with humans, and any problems such as vomiting or house soiling. Not only does this help the veterinarian diagnose problems at an early stage when they are often easier to solve, but it also gives your cat and the vet a chance to become acquainted with one another – and down the road, when a serious problem does strike, that background knowledge can be very helpful to the vet, and lifesaving for the cat. There are many options for veterinary care in Kamloops, and the cost of care is similar whether you choose a feline specialist, a regular veterinary clinic, or a cat clinic. If it’s been a while since your kitty has been examined, choose the the veterinarian you feel most comfortable with and schedule a visit ! The prohibition will remain in effect until Oct. 15 or until further notice. From April 1 to May 11, BC Wildfire Service crews responded to 36 wildfires in the Kamloops Fire Centre, many of which were the result of poorly planned open burning. A poster explaining the different categories of open burning is available online at: http://bit. ly/1GlhE9l. Prohibited activities will include: • The burning of any waste, slash or other materials (piled or unpiled) larger than one-half metre by one-half metre.
• The burning of more than two open fires of any size at the same time. • Stubble or grass fires of any size over any area. • The use of fireworks, sky lanterns or burning barrels of any size or description. A map of the affected areas is available online at http://bit.ly/23FpWix The prohibition does not ban campfires that are a half-metre high by a half-metre wide (or smaller) and does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes. Anyone found in contravention of an open burning prohibition may be fined $1,150 and required to pay an administrative penalty of $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or jailed.

Armstrong, 100m dash highlight track classic Dylan Armstrong prepares to throw the shot put at the 2008 Olympic Summer Games in Beijing. Armstrong originally placed fourth in the event, but was awarded the bronze medal in a Kamloops ceremony in 2013 after another athlete tested positive for performanceenhancing drugs.
ADAM WILLIAMS
STAFF REPORTER
adam@kamloopsthisweek.com
Dylan Armstrong’s reputation is one that looms large in the Tournament Capital. It stands to grow a little bigger this weekend. Hillside Stadium will be host to the first annual Dylan Armstrong Track Classic this weekend, a new meet the Kamloops Track and Field Club (KTFC) hopes will replace the cancelled Kamloops Centennial Track Meet, which formerly took place annually on the Victoria Day long weekend. “It’s exciting — I think he’s looking forward to it,” Judy Armstrong, Dylan’s mother and the president of the KTFC, said of having her son, an Olympic bronze medallist, on site for what is primarily a youth meet. “Dylan was a JD [junior development athlete] and that’s how he started,” she continued. “He started when he was nine years old and in track and went right up to where he is today. “I think it is exciting and

I think sports are great for all kids.” Dylan couldn’t be reached for comment. The Classic will begin at 3 p.m. today, with a master’s weight pentathlon. Pole vault and hammer throw events
will also go this evening. Tomorrow’s action begins at 11 a.m. and will feature track, jump and throws events. The Classic will also be a qualifier for the B.C. Summer Games, with some of those
events beginning before the official start of the meet, at 9:30 a.m. The final events of tomorrow’s action begin at 7 p.m. The highlight of the weekend, though, may be an unofficial event tomorrow
afternoon. So You Think You Are Fast, a 100-metre dash open to racers of all ages, will seek to find Kamloops’ fastest runners. The community event will feature junior development (eight- to 13-yearolds), midget (14- and 15-year-olds), youth (16- and 17-year-olds), junior (18and 19-year-olds) and senior divisions (20-plus), divided into male and female sections. A total of $5,000 in prize money is available. The fun event is open to anyone, including adults, interested in competing. Entry is $10. “We hosted a meet, every year, an elementary school meet called that. We were
doing that for years. The last couple of years we didn’t do it,” Judy said of So You Think You Are Fast. “When we decided to rename the old Centennial meet, we just thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be kind of fun if we could do this and get some sponsorship for it?’” she continued. “Kids are interested in it — it was successful before — but you can’t have too many events like that or the numbers aren’t going to be there.” In addition to being the namesake of the event, Dylan will conduct a shot-put and hammer-throw clinic. Meanwhile, Gary Reed, the 2007 world championship silver medallist in the 800m and a two-time Olympian, will host a middledistance running clinic. Both clinics will run on Sunday from 9 a.m. until noon. The $25 entry free includes lunch. For more information on the Classic, So You Think You Are Fast or Dylan and Reed’s clinics, go online to kamtrack.ca.

Kamloops Symphony Music School’s Kathy Humphries announces a new memorial fund for music student bursaries Wednesday, created in memory of music teacher and tenor Peter Collins, who died from cancer more about one year ago.
PETER’S GIFTS LIVE ON FOR STUDENTS Doug said Peter followed the freemason ideals, “helping family, helping community, helping others.” The bursary will be run through the KSO and provide young students access to its music school, where Peter taught for years. Perhaps fittingly, as the press conference proceeded talking about Peter’s love of music and how he found a second home with the KSO school, music could be heard coming from one of the classrooms as the orchestra’s principal violinist, Cvetozar Vutev, conducted a class. The fund will be boosted by a matching grant from the Department of Canadian Heritage Endowment Incentives Program. Doug expects additional donations and grants should grow it to about $50,000 by

oug Collins remembers his son coming home and announcing he was going to give his guitar away. “That was just Pete,” Doug said of his late son, a music teacher and singer. Peter had a student with a lot of talent, great potential but family resources didn’t allow for a decent musical instrument. “So Pete would work to get it all ready and he’d give it to him,” Doug said — a man who always put his students first.
It’s why Doug, his wife Sue and their daughter-in-law Rochelle know the man they love would approve of their plans to create a memorial fund in his name to provide bursaries to help students like the one who received the guitar, young budding musicians with commitment who just need a little help. The fund has grown through donations made after Peter died on May 3 last year, the result first of an autoW E S T E R N

immune disease and, later, cancer. Doug and Peter also worked at the Broadcast Centre and, through owner Pattison Broadcast Group, additional money was put into the fund that supports developing musicians. Both men were also members of the Freemasons of B.C. and Yukon. Doug, its Grand Master, presented the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra’s general manager with a cheque for $10,000.

next year. The fund will be open to all School District 73 students as well as those attending the KSO school who are under the age of 18 when they apply. Applications will only be accepted for lessons now offered at the school. Existing students must have their accounts current when they apply. Finally, all relevant documentation — an application form that asks about music studies, names of teachers, what instruments, family income and, again perhaps in a nod to Peter as much as to the school, a brief explanation of how they have benefited from lessons and what music means to them. For Peter, music was more than just his tenor voice, Doug said at the time of his son’s death. “His real contribution was the way he •

reached out to people and talked to people. “He just had a gift for being able to reach out.” At the press conference, Rochelle reiterated that view, talking about a husband who “had a talent for finding the little successes in his students. He loved seeing them at the Festival of the Performing Arts and he loved when they would sing in the mass choir at Carnegie Hall.” But, she said, he was also a man who would drive a student home if he needed a ride, who was as much a friend as he was a mentor and teacher. The first bursaries are expected to be awarded at the beginning of the upcoming school year. Applications are available online at kamloopssymphonymusicschool.com and must be submitted by Aug. 31. WEARABLE ART
I
n the 1980s, I attended Alberta College of Art (ACAD). My instructors were mainly modernists. Though classical drawing and painting techniques were taught, the bulk of instruction was idea orientated. At the time, I was interested in learning how to capture and interpret the world I lived in. I studied drawing as a major but rarely used a pencil, opting instead for a paint brush to capture life. I remember fellow students who were annoyed I was a drawing major while in their eyes I was painting but my instructors always backed me up. The reason was they felt drawing was an act of “seeing the world” and it did not matter what tools we used for that practice. But, if I felt more comfortable sketching the world with a paint brush than a pen, then why not? One thing modernists taught me is open boundaries. Art is an expression of something beautiful and tells the story of the human condition. It has been with us from the beginning and I am sure it is going to stay with us and evolve. Who am I to judge, confine or restrict the expressions of, in essence, who we are? Good art, bad art — it makes no difference and we love it all. Modernists, I knew, believed artists S A S H A K R O F T

embodied art. So if an artist touches a canvas and says it is art, it is. If an artist creates something from their mind and has a technician create it for them, it is still art. If an artist even thinks about something and alters the environment, it is art. In essence, art is what the artist says it is. The thing, product or painting is a connector for the viewer to experience the idea behind the art. This concept fascinates me. I know our culture has moved away from modernism and its esoteric thinking, but I believe much of it still exists around us in a more integrated thought process. I find people today have no problem grasping new ways of thinking about things and can step from one paradigm to another in a single breath. This past year, I switched mediums and am painting on pieces of jewelry instead of canvases. Macro paintings are in my mind and I use A S S G E A T R S S D S O O G L E E S D R S E O D R R E A F T S

a magnifying glass and pin to paint. I like to think of these pieces as wearable art. Instead of putting energy into one painting eventually going into one home, I am spreading it out over a hundred pieces to be worn by a hundred people. The energy, brushstrokes and colours are the same as my paintings on canvas, as these pieces continue to express my deep love of colour and natural beauty, but now they are sculptural in nature and used as adornment.
It is interesting because people ask me “do you make the jewelry?” I tell them I paint it with enamel paints, transforming the jewelry from something common and kitsch to a small and unique piece of fine wearable art. I am also often asked if I still paint. My response? Yes, it’s just very small. I create jewelry, but I am not a jeweller. My modernist instructors would smile. RCMP officers are being recognized for helping take drunk drivers off the road. Alexa’s Team is named for Alexa Middelaer, a young girl who was killed by an impaired driver in 2008. This year, 292 impaired drivers were taken off the streets in Kamloops and 10 local officers are being recognized for their contribution at an awards ceremony in which Middelaer’s family will personally thank them. Since the province rolled out stricter drinking and driving rules in 2010, the average reduction from October 2010 to September 2014 was 52 per cent — an estimated 238 lives saved, according to the RoadSafetyBC
Preliminary Report on Alcohol Related Motor Vehicle Fatalities 2015. Alexa’s Team members have handed out more than 71,300 impaired-driving sanctions for alcohol- and drug-related driving offences. The team has grown from 26 officers to 1,885 and represents all regions of B.C. This year, 246 officers from around the province will be added to the team. Kamloops officers include: Const. Paul Koester (Central Interior Traffic Services), Const. Mark Blacklock (Kamloops IRSU), Const. Robin Dupuis (Kamloops IRSU), Const. Kent Novakowski (Kamloops IRSU), Const. Richard
Christy (Kamloops RCMP A watch), Const. Kaid Shewchuk Kamloops (RCMP A watch), Const. Ashley Goodyer (Kamloops RCMP C watch), Cpl. Brian O’Callaghan (Kamloops RCMP city traffic). All-star recognition is being awarded to Const. Guillaume Pelletier (Kamloops RCMP A watch) and Const. Michael Scherpenisse (Kamloops RCMP city traffic). Along with recognizing officers, the program includes Alexa’s Bus, a mobile road-safety unit launched in 2014 used for enforcement and education. The bus travels around the province and was utilized 155 times last year.

FAITH
Beliefs more than scripture
O
ne of the foundational features of many branches of Protestant Christianity is sola scriptura (by scripture alone). This is the concept the only authority for Christian practice and belief is the Bible. Sola scriptura was important in the theology of Martin Luther King and the Reformation movement of the 16th century, which divided Protestants from Catholics. The Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches hold that tradition plus the scriptures are valid authorities for what Christians believe (Anglicans and Methodists also give credence to tradition in their formal statements of belief). Sola scriptura was a driving force behind the translation of the Bible from Latin (i.e. accessible only to the well-educated) into the vernacular languages of Europe and elsewhere. King famously said, “A simple layman armed with scripture is greater than the mightiest pope without it.” Certainly, it has been a wonderful boon to the faith of millions of Christians throughout the centuries to be able to read the scriptures in their own languages. But there are significant difficulties with the concept of sola scriptura, both logically and (ironically) from within scripture itself. First of all, there is no scripture declaring
The totality of Christian “practice is not restricted to ink . . . ”
CHRIS KEMPLING

FAITH
“scripture alone” is the authority for Christian belief and practice. The second difficulty is the matter of interpretation. Some scripture passages are unclear or do not translate well. A passage is taken literally by some readers, while the same passage is thought to be symbolic by others. In short, if anyone with a Bible can interpret it any way they please, without acknowledging the tradition of centuries of wise men and women of God, we have a recipe for religious chaos. World Christian Encyclopedia counts 33,820 Christian denominations and many of them exist because they interpret the scriptures slightly different from the church next door. Frankly, this is scandalous because Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, “I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one.” The third problem with sola scriptura is prior to the Council of Rome called by Pope Damasus in 382 A.D., there was no authoritatively acknowledged canon of scriptures. The table of contents of our current Bible was not part

of the Bible, but was established by the councils of the early church fathers and apostolic tradition. In other words, the faith and practice of early Christians (most of them illiterate) was not based on a written Bible, but a combination of writings, oral traditions and guidance from the church fathers. In fact, Luther wanted to exclude James, Jude, Hebrews and Revelation from the Bible, in part because they contained passages against the idea of sola scriptura. One of the ironies of sola scriptura is scripture itself refers multiple times to oral traditions or Jewish writings, whose elements are nowhere found in the accepted canon of the Bible. Jude, for example, quotes from The Testament of Moses, and both he and Peter cite the Book of Enoch — both are non-biblical Jewish books. Matthew cites the “prophets” who declared the Messiah would come from Nazareth, saying, “He shall be called a Nazarene.” This is an oral tradition because this prophecy is not mentioned in writing by any Old Testament prophets. The Apostle Paul sources the Mishna, the rabbinic oral tradition, in 1 Corinthians 10:4, in the story of the rock which accompanied Moses and the Israelites through the
Sinai Desert. Even Jesus based his parable of the rich man and Lazarus “in the bosom of Abraham” from a concept found in IV Maccabees. Sacred oral traditions are an integral part of spiritual identity. Paul was clear on the importance of tradition and repeated it in his letters to the early churches. To the church at Thessalonica he wrote, “Stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us.” To the church in Corinth he wrote, “Hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you.” In his second letter to the Corinthian church Paul emphasizes “you are a letter of Christ, cared for by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God . . .” Basically, he is saying the totality of Christian practice is not restricted to ink, but also included how Christians lived their faith in concert with the guidance of Paul, who was steeped in rabbinic traditions, and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Who benefits from almost 34,000 divisions in Christianity but Satan? Jesus exhorted us to be one. We cannot be one when some insist scripture alone determines what to believe.

Battling demons of disease for her kids DALE BASS
STAFF REPORTER

Sue Cook’s life is ruled by buzzers, alarms and timers. Her routine is pretty much the same most days: she gets up, gets her kids off to school, goes to the gym, comes home, has a to-do list that takes about an hour to complete, has a nap, an alarm goes off and she gets her daughters from school. “That’s it. That’s my day,” she said. By the
time she’s done, she’s wiped out. It’s the reality Cook and her family live with since she was diagnosed two years ago with a type of multiple sclerosis called transverse myelitis. It hasn’t affected her mobility, but her body feels nothing. If someone applies pressure, she can sense it, but not much more. In fact, Cook recalled, she baked brownies in a foil container, cut them and went to serve them,
only to be told her hand was bleeding. She had cut through the foil into her hand and didn’t feel it. More devastating to her is the way the disease affects her cognitive ability. Her thought processes are gone and she needs bells and buzzers to help stick to a routine to get through the day. It’s a big change for the woman who once defined herself through her job in a dental office where she was a multi-tasker,

who prided herself in remembering each of the many patients who came to the office, who would recognize voices on the phone. “Now, I’m lucky to remember to put deodorant on,” Cook said. “I’m a bit of a perfectionist and it’s hard losing control.” She goes to the gym because it’s a bit of a haven, a place where she is around people, but no one is really paying much attention to her. “You won’t find a depressed person in the gym,” she said. “You’re not judged.” Her disease, one that was diagnosed when she was 45, has been hard for her 10- and 12-year-old daughters. Because every day can be different for her, Cook finds herself often sitting down with them and saying “it’s not a good day.” Husband Richard is fabulous and has been filling some of the gaps that exist because of Cook’s illness. She’s tried various treatments that didn’t work, but once she connected with doctors at the University of British Columbia and was prescribed Lemtrada, she’s feeling a bit more optimistic. It’s an infusion drug; the first treatment was 12 hours a day for five days and it wipes out her immune system, leaving her body to rebuild itself. It’s a yearly treatment and the second dosing last December was again for 12 hours but for just three days. MRIs have shown the lesions have not changed in the past two years.

Three routes available The T-shirts are made, her team is pumped and Sue Cook is ready to take part in the Soctiabank MS Walk on Sunday in Kamloops. It starts at the Sandman Centre Plaza at Riverside Park with check-in at 8 a.m. and the walk starting at 10 a.m. There are three routes, a 1.5-kilometre, five-kilometre and 10-kilometre. The Kamloops event has 427 walkers in 49 teams. Last year, they raised $39,408.51 and Cook’s team contributed more than $4,000 itself. To donate, follow the links online at mssociety.ca under the events tab. There are still three on her brain and a dozen on her spine but the fact they have remained static is a good sign, Cook said. She appreciates the treatment not only because she believes it’s helping but because it speaks to how research has changed. Cook said it’s not a fun life. Sometimes the stress can be overwhelming. When Cook realized she couldn’t work and had to apply for medical benefits, a simple call from her insurer and she was done for a week. “They make you more aware of your reality with the questions they ask,” Cook said. “It was, ‘Holy crap, I can’t do that anymore. She talks publicly and openly about how her life changed and about how important it is to understand the disease and the need for more resources to continue to find treatments and perhaps, a cure. “It’s tough,” she said of living with her disease. “You get used to it, but it’s the brain, the thoughts, thinking about when you could do so many beautiful things. “I battle my demons every day. I do it for my kids. I have to be a better person for them.”

Mark Haden is curious how the federal government will go about legalizing marijuana. The government can do it badly, the former addictions counsellor and now health educator said, by commercializing it, creating outlets that add to the bank accounts of a few people through businesses that market the drug. Or, it could allow sales in discreet buildings that are not advertised, do little promotion and that bring with them the message to consumers that is neutral and not attractive. Haden, an adjunct professor in the school of public and population health at the University of British Columbia, has some strong opinions on drugs and, while he’s convinced the criminal-justice system isn’t the tool to use to respond to it, he’s also outspoken on taking a public-health
approach to confronting drug use. He will present his views and ideas at two workshops in Kamloops on Monday, one from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on how to talk to kids about drugs and one from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. designed for parents and caregivers on how to parent a child using drugs. Both are at the Henry Grube Education Centre, 245 Kitchener Cres. Both are free and, while one is geared more to parents and one to educators, anyone can attend either session. His message is not so much “just say no” as it is “just say know,” one that takes a look at the messages marketing and advertising carry and at drug-education programs that had, as their main objective, instilling fear in young people rather than discussing the consequences of using drugs. It’s important to understand all the issues connected with problematic drug use, Haden said. Haden promotes harm

Saturday will feature the Art Alley, a new event in celebration of local artists, from noon to 4 p.m. Artists will be doing live canvas painting in the Fourth Avenue alley, between the patios of Red Collar Brewing and Central Station Pub. Participating artists include Kelly Wright, Evan Christian, Alex Moir-Porteus and Ken Wells, who have all contributed to the downtown back-alley art murals. Artists Ronan Redel, Marianna Abutalipova, Melaina Todd and others will also be participating. Artwork created at the event will be auctioned off at 3 p.m., but observers are also welcome to place their bids in the silent auction. The auction is part of a fundraiser for the Customer Care and Patrol Team, which is dedicated to promoting public safety and assisting all visitors to downtown. During the live-art showcase observers are invited to join one of the nearby patio parties at Red Collar Brewing and Central Station Pub for Drink and Draw, an opportunity to contribute to ongoing large-scale collaborative drawings. No experience is necessary.

can barely believe we are here. This island country off the southeast coast of India was known as Ceylon until 1972 and it has long been on my bucket list as one of the world’s most exotic places. Looking out over Beira Lake, in the heart of Colombo, we find a tranquil pause from the energetic pace of the capital’s business area. Another favourite are walks in swirling tropical breezes along Galle Face Green, the grassy space running beside the Indian Ocean. Invariably, my husband Rick and I find a handy outdoor café to
slurp iced coffee under swaying palms. After a few days of soaking up the vibes of Colombo, we formulate plans for an elephant encounter in one of the many national parks where these amazing creatures roam wild. We soon glean with the congested two-lane highways, even the nearest national park is too far (not in distance, but time it takes to get there). A daytrip to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is an ideal option, of which our seasoned driver Rajah reports, although only 90 kilometres from Colombo, will still take three hours. Rajah demonstrates an insect’s compoundeye capability as he skims past motorrickshaws rattling along the outer edges

of the roadway. Trucks, buses and cars vie for space in between and motorcycles weave in and out all of the above. The orphanage, first established at another location in 1975, is a short distance from the Maha Oya River. A staff member greets us and shares: “Pinnawala is now home to 37 male and 51 female pachyderms spanning three generations. As well as taking in new orphans, older elephants are retained here as they’ve become dependent on the food supply or have special needs.” Some in this latter category are Raja, who is blind, and Sama, standing tall on three legs as her left front leg lost in a landmine explosion. On a grassless patch, gentle giants

toss dust on their backs with their trunks. A truck rumbles onto an open field signalling the tuskers to come and dine on green matter being spread about by young volunteers; today’s menu is tamarind, kitul (sugar palm) and maize. Just past noon, we stand riveted as the whole herd thunders past us on their way to the river to escape the heat of the day and socialize in the refreshing fast-flowing water. The young’uns delight in trunkwrestling and spraying water willy-nilly. I find it difficult to leave, but with Rick’s prodding, we are onward to the town of Kandy, the site of an ancient kingdom and famed Buddhist temple. Rajah stops the car

on a forested hill for a panoramic view of this valley town edging a lake and shares historic timelines. “After 2,000 years of rule by kingdoms, Sri Lanka was colonized in turn by the Portuguese, Dutch and, lastly, the British ending in 1848. “The Kingdom of Kandy was one of the last independent monarchies founded and endured against colonial forces until the early 19th century.” A downward drive brings us to the Royal Complex, a UNESCO site that includes the King’s Palace, Queen’s Palace, Harem Quarters, museums and, attesting to the country’s long Buddhist heritage, the Temple of the Tooth, so named for its tooth relic of Gautama Buddha. temple, a grand painting of legendary Prince Dantha and Princess Hemamali draws our attention. It is said the princess carried Buddha’s tooth hidden in her hair when bringing it from India to Sri Lanka in the 4th century, after which it was moved to various repositories for safety until brought to its final Kandy temple home in the 1500s. The receptacle holding the sacred tooth is not in plain sight, but lies behind an array of gleaming gold and white marble Buddha images in the heavily guarded relic room. Every inch of available space is filled with worshippers — some standing, some sitting, others adding to the already thick mat of flowers on the long altar table.

The scent is intoxicating, the air is stifling. I smile as a child barely able to reach the top of the table adds marigolds with great solemnity. Leaving the temple, we are in for a tour of the town, with Rajah pointing out the most prominent colonial leftovers before heading back to Colombo. Sri Lanka means “resplendent island” in Sanskrit, so apropos for this place of superlative natural beauty, cultural richness and welcoming locals. Vacations for the whole family
M
ore and more families are choosing to travel together. The lure of a sunny getaway combined with some quality family time is attractive in our working world. When it comes to having the best family vacation possible, choosing the right resort is the most important decision. Location, rooms, kid- and teen-friendly programming, food, ambiance — there’s so much to consider. With help from a travel agent,
determine which resorts are great for teens, which are best for families with younger kids and which have the most familyfriendly accommodations. Family resorts feature everything from age-specific, supervised kids clubs and playgrounds, teen lounges, great swimming beaches, waterparks and kid-approved buffet selections. The selection of room categories also makes it easier for families big and small to find suitable accomodation. For those with large families, don’t worry — there are resorts with rooms large enough to
accomodate a family of fiveplus. In addition, many resorts allow kids to stay and eat free. For single parents, special rates are offered at a handful of resorts. Travelling with a whole family can be rewarding but also stressful. Family resorts offer a safe, exciting atmosphere for kids and relaxing holiday for parents, thanks to the variety of activities, facilities and promotions. — submitted by Leoni Alston of Kamloops Maritime Travel

Whether it’s a trip to Disneyworld, a tour of Europe or a week at the cottage, here are some quick and effective travel tips: • Keep a strong stomach with probiotic supplements: Be sure all family members take a quality probiotic with active cultures at least
two weeks before the trip and continue taking it throughout. These bacteria help provide the proper balance of flora and combat foreign bacteria from water and food. • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: Make sure to continually drink either
plain water or water with an added electrolyte replacement. These supplements contain vitamins B and C, and electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium, which can help to stay energized and feel 100 per cent. Be prepared for the
sun: Sunburns are always a risk when travelling. Choose a sunscreen with zinc-oxide and titanium-dioxide in the ingredient list, especially when it comes to kids. — newscanada.com

WORD SCRAMBLE
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
