Seniors targeted by scammers

FLYING HIGH

Be cautious when approached Kevin Mills Mission Record

A pair of scams directed at seniors have been reported in the Mission area. One involves a young woman asking for help for her sick baby, while the other involves the bogus sale of freshly caught fish. Last week a Mission senior answered a knock on her door early in the morning and discovered a young, upset-looking woman standing on the doorstep. The visitor said she had locked herself out her house and needed to use the phone to contact her sister, who was watching her sick baby. “I thought, ‘Oh, that poor baby, that poor mom,’ so I said to her, come on in,” said the Mission senior, who asked that her identity not be revealed. Once the stranger was inside, she made several calls on the homeowner’s phone. She eventually told the senior that her dad was coming from Chilliwack to bring her a spare set of keys. Being a kind-hearted host, the senior allowed the woman to wait in her home. That’s when the story changed. “She proceeded to tell me that she had a prescription for

her baby, who was very sick, and it was $86 but she didn’t have any money on her to pick up the prescription because her purse was locked in her house.” That’s when she asked the senior to lend her some cash. “I kind of looked at her and thought, something’s going on here, something’s wrong.” Although she had money in the house, the senior declined to give the stranger any, suggesting she take her child to the Mission Hospital. The young women then asked for a ride to a house in the downtown area. The senior woman’s husband agreed to drop the stranger off. While she is fortunate that she didn’t lose any money in the incident, the senior wants other people to be aware of the danger. After calling some friends and neighbours, the senior discovered that the young woman had told a similar story to others. “I hear she targets houses that have cars with veteran’s licence plates on it,” said the upset senior. “I let her in my house. I’m so stupid but, I mean, she had the gift of the gab and I was feeling

District’s debt has decreased

Something fishy about the offer From A1

sorry for the baby.” She has reported the incident to the Mission RCMP, who are investigating. “Scams such as this, where suspects approach victims and ask for money with a hard-luck story, are common,” said Mission RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright. “The public is cautioned to be careful in dealing with strangers who approach them at their residence for money or assistance.” He said they will often ask to use the phone or request water and then commit thefts while the victim is out of the room. “What is particularly troubling about these incidents is the depravity of the suspects who routinely prey upon elderly victims who are often on fixed incomes,” said Wright, adding the incidents often go unreported.

Kevin Mills Mission Record

Mission’s long-term debt decreased by $600,000 in 2015. Kris Boland, director of finance for the district, told council last week that the long-term debt has dropped from $6.8 million to $6.2 million, as a result of regularly scheduled payments. The debt comes from money borrowed for the construction of Fire Hall #1 in 1998 and the construction and redevelopment of the Mission Leisure Centre, sports park and water spray park in 2007. “Assuming no other early debt retirement opportunities are pursued, when they come up, the district will have debt outstanding for approximately 11 years,” said Boland.

Gibson will run again With a provincial election just one year away, Simon Gibson, MLA for Abbotsford-Mission, has confirmed that he plans to run again. “I am seeking re-election next May and look forward to the campaign. I am proud to run on the BC Liberal government’s record of prudent fiscal management and leading Canada in both GDP and job growth. “As always, I place my trust in the hands of the voters of Abbotsford-Mission.” The election is tentatively set for May 9, 2017.

Mission RCMP are also warning the public about another fraudster active in the area, also targeting elderly victims. Mission RCMP have received several reports of a man who has been approaching elderly Mission residents in the street and defrauding them of cash. The suspect approached each of the victims and offered to sell them a quantity of fish for about $70. The suspect took the cash and never returned to provide any fish as promised. Only a limited description is available. The suspect is described as a First Nations male who goes by the first name of Daryl and has tattoos. Police would like to remind the public to exercise caution and common sense when they are solicited by people on the street. Anyone with information on either scam is asked to contact the Mission RCMP at 604-8267161. If you wish to remain anonymous, call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Police increase enforcement Mission RCMP announced last week that it would increase enforcement in rural areas of Mission, including Stave West, and the first weekend of patrols kept officers busy. There were plenty of people in the Stave West area last Sunday as police conducted enforcement action on a number of safety and regulatory violations related to motor vehicles, off-road vehicles and boats. The Provincial Off-Road Vehicle Act came into force last November and requires all off-road vehicles to be registered if used on Crown Land. While most users complied with these new requirements, four violation tickets were issued for unregistered ORV’s and five violation tickets were issued for no safety helmet. Over the course of eight hours on Sunday afternoon, police issued the following: ❑ 17 violation tickets ❑ four vehicle inspection notices ❑ three Canada Shipping Act violation notices ❑ two notice of driving prohibitions ❑ one immediate roadside prohibition ❑ one Criminal Code arrest for obstruction of a peace officer ❑ one Criminal Code arrest for flight from a peace officer “We appreciate the support we have received from the majority of responsible recreational users in the area,” said Mission RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright. “We have had a number of serious and fatal incidents in the Stave West area already this year

OPINION

Published & printed by Black Press Ltd. at 33047 First Avenue, Mission V2V 1G2

Minimum wage hike With the tentative date of the next provincial election now less than a year away, the B.C. Liberal government is taking action to stave off what could be one of the opposition’s main lines of attack. Premier Christy Clark announced last week that the province’s minimum wage would rise to $10.85 an hour in September, an increase of 30 cents more than had been scheduled. The additional boost to the minimum wage is a big departure from last year, when the provincial government tied increases to the minimum wage to the rate of inflation, without addressing the underlying fact that many workers are struggling to make ends meet. While linking hikes to the minimum wage with inflation makes sense in providing some certainty

for business, it does little to benefit those working for wages that lag behind the rest of Canada. Last week’s announcement could change the optics ahead of the election campaign. The minimum wage is scheduled to jump 30 cents above the consumer price index again in September 2017, likely hitting $11.25. That still falls well short of the $15 an hour wage called for the B.C. Federation of Labour and being adopted by many U.S. jurisdictions. While many might dispute the need for a $15 an hour minimum wage, it’s hard to dispute that British Columbians face some of the highest costs of living in the country. The province’s minimum wage must reflect that reality. – Black Press

Growing trees for climate change Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views Disagreements persist on the extent of humanity’s role in the current changes to B.C.’s climate, and our ability to influence it, as many readers have told me in the past week. But almost everyone seems to agree that growing more and healthier forests is a good strategy. I would add that harvesting and building with wood preserves its captured carbon, a fact not much discussed in emotional appeals against logging. The B.C. government is finally spending some money on community fuel load removal projects this year, after an initial flurry following the Kelowna fires of 2003 faded in hard times. But the effects of decades of fire suppression in a fire-dependent forest system remain, as northern B.C. and Alberta are showing us again. There is some positive news here. A Victoria-based government research team has published a study that calculates B.C.’s

pine beetle-damaged forests are regenerating more quickly than expected. Warmer temperatures, increased precipitation and the “fertilizer effect” of more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are factors. “By 2020, the enhanced growth due to climate change and increased CO2 more than compensates for the carbon loss from dead, rotting trees,” said lead researcher Vivek Arora of the Canadian Centre for Modeling and Analysis. This recovery even overcomes the projected increase in forest fire loss that comes with gradually increasing temperatures and drier periods. The federal government is still working on its plan to meet greenhouse gas reduction targets agreed to in Paris last year. But the forest industry has stepped up with its own goal. I spoke last week with Derek Nighbor, president of the Forest Products Association of Canada, after he announced his industry’s “30 by 30 Climate Change Challenge.” That’s a goal to reduce the industry’s net carbon emissions by 30 megatonnes a year by 2030. That would be 13 per cent of the Canadian government emission target. One of the main strategies is salvage harvesting and developing more products

that use wood. “It’s basically trying to use every part of the tree,” Nighbor said. “In forest operations right now, this is where we see a big part of the opportunity. Instead of the residual branches and whatnot just being left aside and slashing

If Canada wants to make a bigger contribution to reducing greenhouse gases, forests are a good area to focus on. and burning, bring more of that out and turn it into something.” That something might be a console in a luxury car constructed with wood fibre, or an 18-storey wood student residence building planned for the University of B.C. The other is improving forest growth. Logging operations have long been required to replant areas they cut, not just in B.C. but across Canada. Another way to improve forest carbon

capture is with more productive species, with genetic techniques that increase resiliency as well as wood mass. A background paper from the B.C. forests ministry responds to common misconceptions about forest carbon, including the idea that logging should be stopped to maximize storage. “Maximizing carbon storage in the ecosystem would make sense only if society stopped building new homes, acquiring new furniture and consuming in general,” it says. “If the flow of forest products stops, society will turn to other products with higher greenhouse gas footprints, e.g. plastics, metal or concrete. In addition, if harvesting stopped and we continued to suppress natural disturbances, there is increased potential for larger catastrophic disturbances in the future.” If Canada wants to make a bigger contribution to reducing greenhouse gases, forests are a good area to focus on. At 348 million hectares from the B.C. coast to Newfoundland, they represent nine per cent of the world’s forests. YOUR VIEWS Litter is an unnecessary, avoidable evil On Saturday, May 7, I participated in the Adopt-A-Block spring cleanup. This is an event where a bunch of caring, thoughtful citizens clean up the mess left behind by a bunch of careless, thoughtless citizens. My small group collected several garbage bags full of trash on a short stretch of Stave Lake Street between city hall and Parr Avenue. Why? Not why did we do it? That is obvious: to make our community a cleaner, more pleasant place. But why was it necessary? Why do so many among us think it is acceptable to dispose of the

garbage they generate by dropping it where they stand or tossing it out of the car window? Why do people think it is OK to leave an area uglier and messier than they found it? Cleaning up after ourselves is a simple concept. If a waste receptacle is not available where we are, we have to take the waste with us – in our pocket, purse, backpack or car – and dispose of it in our RotPot, blue bag, or, as a last resort, in the garbage can. We should all try to create as little waste as possible and dispose of un-

avoidable waste responsibly in a way that will not harm our environment, physically or esthetically. Let’s put Adopt-A-Block out of business, freeing its generous volunteers to do other worthwhile work in the community rather than simply undoing the thoughtlessness of others. Litter is a completely unnecessary and avoidable evil. Preventing it is so much easier than cleaning it up. It costs nothing. All we have to do is care. Gillian Hartz Mission

Drivers need to think long before they act A few words from the wise to the uneducated. On Saturday, April 30 at around 9:30 p.m., I was riding my bike home after my day at work. As I was crossing the Lougheed Highway at the

Cedar Connector, someone cursed at me and threw an object at me. Fortunately, it missed. But he still laughed hysterically like he saw something funny on YouTube. Now if it did hit me, what

could have happened? The car would be impounded and the driver’s licence would be suspended. Now, talking about fines, levies and medical expenses would definitely be in the offering.

A fraud investigation led Mission RCMP to execute a search warrant on a local apartment, resulting in the recovery of property from numerous recent break and enters and charges against two suspects. On Saturday afternoon (April 30) police were called to a local business for a report of a man who had used a stolen credit card. Investigators obtained the video surveillance from the store and identified the suspect. The Prolific Offender Suppression Team obtained a search warrant for an apartment located in downtown Mission. Three men were found at the

Are you not hearing clearly when a group of people are talking? Many people find that they are no longer able to understand everything being said, particularly when in the company of others. Engineered in Switzerland, the Audéo V hearing aid has been designed specifically to understand speech in group situations. The majority of those surveyed stated that when exposed to considerable background noise they are able to hear that something is being spoken, but can no longer discern precisely what is being said. The words seem blurred and indistinct. But why is that? The effect tends to manifest itself in group situations, especially in restaurants. It is the high-pitched tones perceived at the entrance to the cochlea that determine when you hear things accurately. In the majority of cases these parts of the inner ear are the first to be affected by noise or aging. As the high-pitched tones are no longer perceived well, the auditory centre of the brain begins to struggle to decode language. It’s a bit like an image that doesn’t have enough pixels.

four and seven and both parents working full-time. In the Fraser Valley, the hourly rate works out to an annual salary of $60,285 (accounting for government taxes and transfers). At B.C.’s minimum wage of $10.45, the same family would earn $38,038. The increase in child benefits was enough to even out a hike in food costs that rose an estimated 2.7 per cent. Using the living wage as a measure, 15 per cent of people in the Fraser Valley, including 11,175 children under 18 years, live in poverty.

scene and arrested. A variety of property was also found in the apartment and several items have been identified as being linked to recent residential break-ins in Mission. Two of the suspects were held in custody to appear in court: Jack Nelson, 33, was charged with possession of break-in tools, possession of a master key, and three counts of possession of stolen property. Dylan Chysyk, 26, was charged with possession of a stolen credit card and possession of stolen property. Police would like to thank the

community for their assistance with these matters. Police would also like to point out that recording the serial numbers of property assisted in this investigation. The public is reminded that this is essential in identifying and recovering stolen property. Police would also like to remind residents to keep their house and vehicle doors locked at night. Anyone with additional information in reference to any of the recent residential break and enters can contact Mission RCMP at 604- 826-7161 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Hearing sensation! Swiss researchers: Audéo V is superior for conversation.

Without Audéo V

With Audéo V

The Audéo V hearing aids provide considerable reduction in noise allowing you to focus on speech. Developed by Swiss audiologists the Audéo V hearing aid is designed to improve speech comprehension in noise, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can trial the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. During your FREE hearing test, our Hearing Care Professionals will determine how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role the technology called “Autosense OS” plays. This technology can recognize where the person being spoken to is located and can amplify only his or her voice,

while ambient noise is reduced. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing aid can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds, seamlessly adjusting to the listening situation. According to Swiss researchers, this can significantly improve speech comprehension, especially in conversation for the right candidates. Chamber shares concerns Minimum wage increase larger than expected The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is joining the BC Chamber of Commerce in voicing concern about the impact that the provincial government’s announcement of two larger-than-expected minimum wage increases will have on B.C. businesses. “Clearly it is a difficult task for the government to strike the correct balance between the needs of lower waged workers and the viability of many smallto medium-sized businesses within some of the more competitive sectors. It is important to note that the minimum wage increases impact more than just those at that established minimum level; it raises the bar for all those workers near the

minimum wage as well,” said David Sawatzky, president of the local chamber. “I am appreciative that the government recognizes the challenges these cost increases pose to small- and medium-sized businesses, and their efSAWATZKY forts to offset these challenges by decreasing the small business tax to 1.5 per cent in 2017.” The Mission Chamber recognizes that the B.C. government has been clear about its intention to raise B.C.’s minimum

wage relative to other Canadian jurisdictions, to match B.C.’s strong recent economic performance. However, going forward, the chamber urges government to return to tying minimum wage increases to the Consumer Price Index (CPI). In 2015, the BC Chamber’s membership passed a policy arguing for the need for predictability in minimum wage increases, and calling for no minimum wage increases beyond those tied to CPI. The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce voted in favour of this policy and will continue to advocate to the provincial government the importance of keeping the increases reasonable to the CPI.

Emergency preparedness workshop With the recent devastating wildfires in Fort McMurray, it seems timely that the conversation around the need to be prepared for emergency situations has surfaced among the Mission business community. The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is partnering with CEC Health and Safety to provide a workshop that will help local businesses get properly set up to take any action needed to keep their business viable no matter what type of disaster, natural or otherwise.

The Emergency Preparedness Workshop will guide business owners/staff through the steps they need to take to maintain their business when everything goes wrong. Representatives from the RCMP, fire department, CIBC (banking), Staples (technology), health and safety and more will be on-hand. This free workshop will be held at the Mission Library on Thursday, June 2 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. For more information or to register, visit missionchamber.bc.ca or call 604-826-6914.

Strong Action For Safer Communities A three-year, $23-million commitment by the Government of B.C. builds on the Guns and Gangs Strategy with the B.C. Anti-Gang Unit, RCMP and Crime Stoppers to support B.C. communities to prevent gang and gun violence. Key elements include: $450,000 to support Crime Stoppers’ proven Cash for Tips on Illegal Firearms and to promote awareness of the Gang Tip Line Enhancement of the End Gang Life Program More outreach to youth More police, with the addition of two 10-person teams New Office of Crime Reduction and Gang Outreach Illegal Firearms Task Force

as current and future diversion eɈorts further reduce garbage generation.

Stave West Area Enforcement Inspector De Jager of the Mission RCMP provided an overview of the proposed public safety patrols and enforcement initiatives in the Stave West Area. Patrol activity is meant to provide a visual police presence and deter illegal activity and acts of disorder. Similar activities will also occur in the Sylvester Road and Norrish Creek area.

2016 Paving Program Funding Due to a cost sharing agreement between the District, BC Hydro and FortisBC to provide compensation for asphalt cuts resulting from major infrastructure upgrades to the 7th Avenue corridor, the District received $56,250 from BC Hydro and $50,400 from FortisBC. These funds will be added to the District’s Paving Program budget for 2016 and used for resurfacing 7th Avenue.

As the Horne Street culvert is in an advanced state of deterioration, a Äbre reinforced concrete product will be sprayed onto the existing culverts to upgrade and repair them. This is a cost-eɈective and permanent solution which will result in a fully structural pipe within the old culvert with full Åow capacities maintained. There will be minimal impact to the public, the environment, and emergency services.

PLAY BALL: Mission players hit the diamond Hundreds of athletes take to the field as the Mission Minor Baseball season begins Ben Lypka Abbotsford News

The boys of spring and summer have returned to the baseball diamonds in Mission, and it’s set to be a busy few months for Mission Minor Baseball. A total of 300 kids are registered locally for spring baseball, spread out over 34 teams ranging from young T-ball players to

the teenaged midget group. MMB president Dan Williams said spring ball runs from April 1 to June 25, and is highlighted by a number of big tournaments. Tournament season kicks off at the end of this month with the River Rush 11U Mosquito House and the River Rush 15U Bantam A tournaments. Both events are

bringing eight teams to town and run from May 26 to 29. The next weekend is the Bantam AA’s turn to shine at the River Rush 2 15U tournament. Eight teams are again scheduled to compete, but Williams said the potential is there to increase the number of teams to 10. The summer baseball season kicks off in late June, and Williams

said the more intense schedule attracts more serious players. “Summer ball is a little bit more for the keeners,” he said, noting that more traveling is involved. “It’s more high-level and intensive stuff. The teams in summer ball vie for a spot in provincials and we usually have one team in each division for summer.” Tournaments continue in the summer, with the Icebreaker 13U Pee Wee A and 18U Midget AA tournaments running in Mission from June 30 to July 3. Both events will host 10 teams. Mission is also hosting the 13U Pee Wee A provincials from July 29 to Aug. 1. Williams has been the president of MMB since 2000 and also coaches the midget team. He said it’s all about pure enjoyment for the kids. “It’s a ton of fun,” he said. “We accommodate all ages and abilities. This isn’t an allstar league at all; we take first-year kids all the way up to midget.” Williams is also the president of the Mission Sports Council

He said another highlight every year is participating in the Challenger division,

Mission’s Larmour signs with UFV Power of good Soccer star plans to pursue a bachelor of science degree

Abbotsford News

Several Mission high school athletes excelled against 40 other schools at the Upper Fraser Valley Track and Field Championships, which were held in Abbotsford at Rotary Stadium on May 4 and 5. Mission Secondary School’s Bryce Mackenzie was the top local athlete, with first-place finishes in the junior boys long jump and triple jump. Mackenzie beat the second-place competitor in the triple jump by almost half a metre, and won the long jump by nearly .4 of a metre. The only other local student to earn first place was Hatzic Secondary School’s Avery Loewen, who grabbed top spot in the Grade 8 girls discus. She also finished seventh in the Grade 8 girls shot put. Picking up second-place showings at the event were: Harrison Trustham from Heritage Park Middle School (Grade 8 boys 200 metres and 200 m hurdles), Hatzic’s Bradly Tober (Grade 8 boys shot put)

and Emily Morgante from HPMS (Grade 8 girls shot put). Local third-place finishers included: Kieran Kotwal from HPMS

(Grade 8 boys 100 m hurdles) and Hatzic’s Tanner Gerringer (junior boys javelin). Qualifying athletes will now compete

against 80 schools at the Fraser Valley Track and Field Championships in Coquitlam from May 16 to 19.

The provincials occur in Nanaimo from June 2 to 4. For complete results from the event, visit fraservalleytrack.net.

I’m also excited to get a post-secondary education at the same time.” Larmour joined Nate Treampleausure from Pitt Meadows and Burnaby’s Bronson Hartley, who were also added to the Cascades on Monday. The University of the Fraser Valley announced on Monday that Larmour was one of three new recruits for the men’s soccer team this fall. BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARDS ARE CHANGING

The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors recently voted to change the timeline and structure of their “Annual Business Excellence Awards.” To prevent competition with other events within the community and to create more of an opportunity for nominees to participate, a new layout for the event has been developed. In addition, a new award will be added this year, sponsored by UFV to recognize a leader in the community who encourages employees to continue lifetime learning. “Overall these changes will bring more opportunity to

highlight our nominees and create more recognition to the value the Business Excellence Awards bring to our local community.” – David Sawatzky, President, Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce. The 2016 Business Excellence Awards will begin with the “Nominate Me” program launching in May. The public will be encouraged to participate in this part of the program to bring recognition to local businesses and organizations that go above and beyond. Once the nominations are closed on July 31st, all entries will be gathered and packages will be sent out to the nominees for

BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARDS TIMELINE

acceptance. In September, the Mission Chamber will announce the nominees to the public and all nominees will be invited to attend the first ever “Mission Chamber of Commerce Nominees Luncheon” on October 20th, 2016. This new additional event will give nominees a chance to be recognized for their achievement with no cost to them. Then comes the judging process…. Mission Chamber will be keeping with the current model of having 6 judges and engaging the community for their votes online as the 7th judge. This process will take place over the month of November.

The finalists in each category will be announced in early January 2017. The winners of the 2016 Business Excellence Awards will be honoured at the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Gala in February 2017. “Connect with your local business owners and celebrate their success at this spectacular event that will focus on the success of all the finalists with an opportunity to network with many of our local business owners.” Says Sawatzky. Contact the Chamber for more information or to purchase tickets.

We are fast approaching our Business Excellence Awards, kicking off this month with our "Nominate Me" program. As business people this is our time to shine! As Mission's residents or consumers, we are very fortunate in Mission to have many high quality businesses and non-profit organizations, capable of great innovation and unparalleled service. Please remember to nominate these businesses, organizations and entrepreneurs for a Business Excellence Award. Let us remind everyone why it is great to do business in Mission! Speaking of greatness, how about a Great Wall and an opportunity for a great game of golf? We are one month closer to our bucket list trip to China which is set to go in October. A tour of the Great Wall

is on the itinerary as well as many other excursions and cultural experiences. Please call our Chamber office to book your place with us on this amazing adventure. If great golf closer to home is more your game you are in luck too! Our annual Chamber golf tournament is being hosted and presented by Mission Golf and Country Club this month. Play a great game and have fun networking with your comrades in business. It will be the greatest work day you didn’t spend in the office. To cap off the "Great" theme for this month's column, I wanted to make sure I thanked MLA's Simon Gibson and Laurie Throness and all those who attended our MLA Roundtable event last month. It was truly great to see the one to one interaction and cooperation between our members and our representatives in government. This type of dialogue and communication is what is required if a great community and government is what is desired!

The message in the mess: InFocus helps organizations bring forward opportunities Kathleen Rake CLICK MEDIA WORKS “Leaders in business and nonprofit organizations often encounter speedbumps and roadblocks that keep them from moving forward. I like to help those leaders identify and navigate around their respective obstacles so they become more effective,” explains Cam Taylor of InFocus Leadership Solutions. Taylor won’t tell people what to do or how to do it; rather, he helps them figure out where they want to go, develop a path to get there, and works alongside them to provide accountability, structure, support, and training. Since 2006, InFocus has supported business, charities and other non-profit

groups, from chambers of commerce and community services to churches (big and small) across Canada, and has helped businesses of all sizes, and from within various industrial sectors, throughout North America. Today, Taylor focusses on supporting businesses and non-profits within Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. He helps managers, boards of directors, and sole practitioners with strategic planning, board governance and the “people side” of their respective organizations. “I like to help them tap into their own capabilities.” And he knows a lot about tapping into capabilities; he had to find the strength and focus to identify and tap into his own after surviving a motorcycle

accident. “I was very broken up,” he explains, “and had 10 surgeries that brought on severe limits to what I can and cannot do—physically.” Taylor managed to turn a difficult and potentially back-sliding situation into an opportunity to make a difference. Living through the accident and its aftermath helps him identify with and support leaders who suffer with transition and change. “It’s okay if your organization is in a mess, because the mess doesn’t have to be the end of it,” he says. “In fact, there is often a message in the mess that will help bring forward opportunities.” Connect with Cam Taylor of InFocus at (604) 866-0057 or cam@in-focus.ca; visit him at www.in-focus.ca.

MISSION REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PARTNERS FOR A TRIP TO CHINA! Executive Director, Kristin Parsons of the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce has just returned from a trip to China, exploring four of the largest cities and meeting with local business. The trip offered by “Citslinc” tours is a chance for Chamber Executives to discover China and “test” the tours that Citslinc can offer their Chamber members. Nine (9) managers from all over BC and another 10 from across Canada joined together in Beijing to begin the tour. While the trip offers members an opportunity to connect with business overseas, the tour is primarily focused on pleasure with sites such as The Great Wall, Ming tombs, Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City and many more. The Mission Chamber is dedicated to providing

our members with opportunities and benefits that speak to their business needs. During the Discover China trip members are given a chance to setup an in person meeting with representatives in various industries to discuss business. This optional feature is a great way for our local business community to connect with business leaders in China to have one-on-one meetings and

research potential suppliers, investors and partnership opportunities. The Mission Chamber is partnering with the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Chamber of Commerce and Black Press to offer “Discover China” an 11 day all-inclusive trip, departing in October 2016. This trip is open to members and non-members and includes everything from flights, hotel, 3 meals daily, bus

tours, attractions and so much more. “There was nothing I needed to worry about, I was very impressed with the tours, the hotels were exceptional, our guides were very well spoken and knowledgeable, all I needed was shopping money!” says Parsons. Eager to share her experience with the membership, Parsons is hosting an info session about the trip on June 8th, 2016 at 5:30pm at the Mission Chamber offices, register early to get a spot! More information on the trip is on the Mission Chamber website at www. missionchamber.bc.ca . Space is limited and final booking date is July 15th, 2016. Or you can email Kristin directly to answer any questions about the trip directly at execdir@ missionchamber.bc.ca

Que Question of the week…

Big and bulky looks of new Cadillac XT5 designed to deceive

‘‘

’’

you’re ever in the area. A new Caddy always comes packed with new technology and the XT5 doesn’t disappoint, especially if you splurge for a higher trim version. Even the basic goodie package includes Wi-Fi hot spot, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a hands-free liftgate. LED headlights, a head-up display, and advanced safety technologies such as adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist are also available. Unique new tech includes Cadillac’s patented Rear Camera Mirror, which enhances a driver’s rear vision by 300 per cent. A video display, applied over the conventional inside rearview mirror, streams an unobstructed wide-angle view of what’s going on behind. An AJAC Best New Safety Technology winner, it helps solve a driver vision issue that plagues many modern high back design vehicles. The advanced “twin clutch” all-wheel drive system is now capable of transferring up to 100 percent of available torque to either the front or rear axle and/or to either rear wheel, via an electronically controlled rear differential. There’s also a new driver-controlled “disconnect” feature that disables the rear drive unit. Improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions are the benefits of operating in this front-drive mode. Canadian prices for a Cadillac XT5 will start at $45,100 (FWD) and $52,120 for the all-wheel-drive editions. Expected city/highway fuel economy ratings for FWD editions are 12.1/8.6 L/100km and 12.9/8.9 L/100km for AWD editions and an XT5 runs fine on regular gasoline.

Cadillac now benchmarks its products against prestige European autos. Do you believe the current model line-up place the luxury marque an equal footing with the likes of BMW, Mercedes and Audi?

Safety Tip: High-risk driving behaviour, such as speeding, increases your chances of crashing. Almost half of all crashes that result in injury or death involve high-risk driving. Slow down and give yourself extra time to get to your destination so you don’t feel the need to rush.

After a sudden and brief illness Irene Sarah Philippsen passed away while peacefully asleep. Her charm, creativity, sense of humour and gentle spirit endeared her to others all her life, even during her final days in hospital and hospice. An enthusiastic singer, artisan and skilled painter, Irene forever missed her fellow artists in the Comox Valley’s Monday Bunch after moving from Black Creek, BC to Abbotsford. Irene is mourned by her family: Lynda Philippsen, Laurence and Lorraine Philippsen, Norman Philippsen and Kellie Hudson, Carl and Tanya Philippsen, Aaron and Christina Philippsen, Albert Wedel, Walter and Elfrieda Philippsen, Ken and Erika (Philippsen) Pleasance as well as grand-dog Lucy. Her many friends at Evergreen Village, former “Black Creekers,” and Clearbrook MB Church sorely feel her absence, too. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Alvin Philippsen as well as sisters Margaret Wedel, Mary Van Bergen and Elizabeth (Betty) Peters. A Memorial Service and tea will be held on Saturday, May 28 at Clearbrook Mennonite Brethren Church beginning at 1:00 pm. Online condolences to the family may be made to:
