MAY 17, 2006: THE SULLIVAN MINE TRAGEDY

Memories are crystal clear, 10 years later C A R O LYN G R A N T

Today, May 17, 2016, marks the ten-year anniversary of day four people lost their lives on the Sullivan Mine property in Kimberley. Ambulance paramedics Kim Weitzel and Shawn Currier, water sampling contractor Doug Erickson,

and Teck Cominco employee Bob Newcombe all died in an oxygen deprived atmosphere inside a water sampling shed near the top mine on May 17, 2006. It was a tragic day that impacted everyone in the area. As Mayor Jim Ogilvie said at the time, “It is one of

the worst things our fire department has ever had to deal with. I spoke to some of the fire fighters this morning and they were visibly shaken. “This incident is going to affect everyone in our community. Every individual in our community will know

one or the victims. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the families.” Even ten years on the impact on the families of Kim, Shawn, Bob and Doug has not lessened. George Weitzel, widower of Kim, spoke to the Bulletin

of his memories of that day and week, and the long fight for an inquest that followed. In the years since the accident, Weitzel has become an advocate for workplace safety, work he continues to this day. “It still goes on,” he said. “As memories fade, diligence about safety on the job fades. Every time I hear of a preventable accident, I find it difficult.” Weitzel’s memories of that day 10 years ago are crystal clear.

“I can remember every bit of it. This season of warm, sunny days triggers my memories of that week. It was way above seasonable in 2006, just like this year. In fact they attributed warm weather as a factor in the breathing of the waste dump, which led to the atmosphere in the sampling shed.” Weitzel says the days leading up to May 17 each year are always difficult.

The end of a school year marks a special time for the Mount Baker Secondary School graduating class as they end a chapter of their young lives while moving on to bigger and better things. First, it’s a graduation ceremony, a handshake and a slip of paper followed by an evening of finery as students don suits, tuxedos and dresses and head off to Prom at the College of the Rockies. Traditionally, a Pre-Prom reception has been held out at the St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino. However, the MBSS Parent Volunteer Prom Committee 2016 has decided to shift that to Rotary Park in Cranbrook.

Anita Savage, with the committee, stresses that the only reason that the reception is moving to Rotary Park is because of it’s central location and easy access for students’ family members and relatives. “We thought it’d be fun to let the people know in Cranbrook because one of the reasons we’re doing that is to make it more of a community event because out at St. Eugene it’s a little bit inaccessible for some people,” Savage said. “This way it’s downtown and anybody who would like to see the Grade 12 grads can come and see them march with all their finery.”

Firefighters’ kids raise over $1,600 for Fort McMurray For the Townsman

$1674.61 was raised Sunday by the Cranbrook Firefighters Association, and their families in an effort to raise funds for the community of Fort McMurray. In response to the recent wildfire that led to the evacuation of the Fort McMurray community, many members of our local firefighting family have expressed a desire to offer support. Our kids, in particular have been touched by this emergency, and have asked how we can help. A hot dog barbeque was held by donation on Sunday May 15th at the Fire Hall. All cash donations will be going to the Red Cross in support of the Fort McMurray emergency. The Cranbrook Firefighters Association is extremely grateful to this very generous community in their support for this cause. Thank you! Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services.

RDEK puts out the call for your hazardous waste For th e Town sman

East Kootenay residents are encouraged to dig deep into their basements and garages in search of old cleaners, oils, pesticides and other toxic materials as the RDEK prepares to host three Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Round Ups the last weekend of May. “We will be holding one round up in each of our three Subregions,” said Kevin Paterson, RDEK Environmental Services Manager. “There will be no charge for drop off and this is the best way for residents to get rid of aerosols, flammable liquids, poisonous products, corrosives, oils, antifreeze, paints, pesticides, herbicides, solvents, nail polish remover, furniture polish, rat poison, pool acids and more.” The HHW Round Ups will run from 10 am to 2 pm as follows: • Elk Valley Subregion, Saturday, May 28 Sparwood Fire Hall (479 Pine Avenue, Sparwood) • Columbia Valley Subregion, Saturday, May 28 Parking lot behind Radium Visitors Info Centre (7556 Main St E, Radium Hot Springs)

• Central Subregion (Cranbrook/Kimberley & Area), Sunday, May 29 Kimberley Civic Centre (525 Archibald Street, Kimberley) The Round Ups are for household residential items only. No commercial or industrial products will be accepted and they will not accept explosives, ammunition, biomedical or radioactive waste. “In addition to the Household Hazardous Waste products, we will also have representatives from the ElectroRecycle Program in attendance. They will be accepting small appliances, power tools and old exercise machines including everything from toasters and steamers to old drills and treadmills,” Paterson. A complete list of the products accepted in the Round Ups is available on the RDEK’s website at www.rdek. bc.ca. “These are the only events that will be held this year, so we really want people to be aware that they are happening and encourage them to use this opportunity to get rid of those old, unwanted and hard-toget-rid-of wastes,” Paterson said.

The Mount Baker Secondary School robotics team got a boost in funding from the provincial government and the City of Cranbrook, as both provided $1,000 each towards their upcoming trip to New Brunswick for the a national robotics competition. The robotics team, which captured gold at a provincial competition, has been fundraising in order to make the trip out to the Skills Canada national competition in Moncton, as the trip is estimated to cost roughly $16,000. The robotics team is still collecting donations and anyone interested in supporting the team can drop off cheques at the school administration office or contact Bill Walker, the robotics instructor, at 250-426-5241. City of Cranbrook donates $1,000 directly to Ft. McMurray Tre vor Cr awley

With the tragic events in Fort McMurray at the forefront of everyone’s mind, the City of Cranbrook voted to send a $1,000 donation to the city that has been ravaged by wildfire in northern Alberta. Brought forward by Councillor Isaac Hockley, the resolution would take the donation out of a discretionary council contingency fund and go directly to the City of Fort McMurray. During the discussion, a point was made that the money should go to the Canadian Red Cross, as donations are being matched both from the provincial and federal levels of government. However, the point was made that if Cranbrook was facing a disaster,

the city would appreciate any kind of funding that went directly to municipal coffers. “I know if we were faced with that disaster, with our limited coffers that we have, we could certainly use some help there, too,” said Mayor Lee Pratt. Added Councillor Blissett: “I think it has merit to go to the City of Fort McMurray because the Red Cross is receiving large amounts of money from across the country. What we know as a city, they will have special uses for the money and at least it allows it to be used a different way.” While Councillor Ron Popoff suggested it might be more prudent to take advantage of the matching funding by donating to the Red Cross, CAO David Kim

noted how much the City of Calgary appreciated financial support during the downtown floods in 2013. Hockley noted that he is passing along his resolution to UBCM to be distributed throughout the province. “When we see the $1,000 and this hits UBCM, it kind of multiplies through every one of these cities and all of the sudden that $1,000 will turn into $50,000 or even $100,000, so that’s kind of what I was hoping [for] with this resolution,” he said. Local communities haven’t been idle in that regard, as Kimberley has pledged $1,000, while Fernie and the RDEK have each donated $5,000 towards the Red Cross.

Baker pre-prom reception moving to Rotary Park from St. Eugene Continued from page 1 Prom is on June 25th, with the pre-prom reception scheduled for 7 p.m. The Prom theme is Mission Impossible. St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino has been hosting the pre-Prom reception for seven years, but Rotary Park should help solve some some minor issues like parking and an the grad class photo op, as classes have outgrown the front stairwell where the students congregate. “I think we talked

about many different ideas as a group,” added Savage. “Fort Steele? Should we try to have it on main street? That was another idea we kicked around, but I think Rotary worked the best because they want to use the pavilion to put the kids centre stage. “The kids will all march through centre stage on a red carpet, so they can walk up the back and come out the front into the park.” Savage says the com-

mittee has received a lot of feedback from the kids that say they’re proud of the city where they grew up and that having a preprom reception downtown would be nice. “We feel it’s more accessible for people to come see the grads dressed up at Rotary; it’s closer, it’s in town,” Savage continued. “Rotary looks pretty nice, they get it all fixed up for Sam Steele Days, we’re the weekend right after that. “Another plan is—at least for photo opportu-

nities—because we’re close to the college, they can pull the decorations right off the floor at the college and bring them down to Rotary.” Savage adds that there will be seating down in the park, as the committee will be renting bleachers for the large grad class prom photo. There will be specialized area for disabled persons and elderly parking, as well as space reserved specifically for grads.

New agreement for Rails to Trails management Tre vor Cr awley

The City of Cranbrook is teaming up with Kimberley and the NorthStar Rails 2 Trails Society to provide maintenance of the popular route between the two municipalities for the

next year. The three entities have worked together for the last three years to enhance, promote and maintain the trail through a joint funding structure. However, the society

recently expressed concerns that their share of responsibilities wasn’t sustainable under the old agreement structure late last year, asking cities to take on more responsibilities for managing the trail.

Previously, when we had the maintenance agreement, it was hard to get a comfort level with the group,” said Chris New, the Director of Leisure Services. “We were striving for a threeyear agreement, we

could only get a oneyear. I’m not exactly sure what the caution was with them. We’ve had quite a support role with the group and a very good relationship with our society. “…This is a new approach and they just would like to feel it out and we may want to feel it out as well and see if this is the right approach.” Under the new agreement, the cities will be responsible for repair and maintenance of the trail pavement and surged, bridge, washroom buildings and underground storage tanks, gates at road crossings, signage, fencing, culverts, retaining walls, ditches, and drainage channels, rock scaling, steep slope maintenance, garbage bins, and parking areas. New said both cities will coordinate staff for any work that needs to be done, but adds that certain jobs may be contracted out, such as washroom cleaning. “We’re actually not anticipating a lot of staff time on the trail,” said

Cranbrook is teaming up with Kimberley and the NorthStar Rails 2 Trails Society to provide maintenance between the two municipalities. New. “In previous years when there was a lot of staff on the trails—not our staff but contractors—we had issues on the trail, for example with overgrown clover and needing multiple mows in a year, multiple sweeps. “That, through our society…they’re in the third year of an aggressive vegetation control management along the metre and a half swath of trail and that’s really knocked that back.” Staff will conduct monthly inspections, however, New is anticipating that the public will help out in that regard. “We’ve got a lot of trail ambassadors who, just by nature, will phone us when it’s a dangerous tree that’s come down or some kind of notification like that, we’ve got a really good network like that, so we don’t have to spend a lot of time on the trail,” New added. The cities will also remain responsible for any capital improvements and major repairs to the trail. In turn, the society will focus on the promotion of the trail—website, social media, brochures, maps—coordination of trail enhancements and special projects, such as interpretive signage, benches and kiosks, while also look-

ing after fundraising through grants and donations. In the past, the cities gave $10,000 each directly to the society, however, under the new agreement, the cities will retain the money and allocate it for their responsibilities. The budget, as it was in the past, will remain the same, but the cities will also work with the society to look at long-term fundraising campaigns for major capital items. In addition to funding from Cranbrook and Kimberley, Mayor Lee Pratt said that the RDEK has kicked in some funding, as the trail cuts through Area C, but added that he’d prefer the agreement to be between the two municipalities and the society, rather than administered globally through the regional government. “I think it makes sense to do it ourselves because perhaps we decide we want to go test the waters on contracting it out, it’s best we have a good idea of what it’s going to cost, rather than let somebody else come and tell us what it’s going to cost,” said Pratt. “So I think it’s a good idea to test the waters ourselves first and try to establish a cost on it ourselves.”

10 years ago: the Sullivan Mine tragedy CONTINUED from page 1

“It is a reminder of how fast a person’s life can change,” he said. “Some people say, you’ll get over it. You don’t. You only learn how to carry it around. “It may be ten years old but it’s still recent in my memory. It doesn’t seem like ten years. It’s a lot fresher than that for all of us (the four families). “Kim was working that day, but then she had some days off and so did I. “The plan was I was going to finish a job on a hot rod I was working on, then get our bikes ready for a ride. I was working on that when I heard on the radio that something had happened at the mine. “My life has been changed since that moment. I felt like I was gut shot and kicked in the nuts.” In the days and weeks that followed, Weitzel and members of the Currier, Newcombe and Erickson families waited for the Chief Mining Inspector’s report on the accident. “We all trusted there would be some light shed on what happened,” Weitzel said. “Then the report came out and it was offensive to all of us. That’s what brought us together. My

anger was at such a level that I called Penny Newcombe. We met for coffee and I said, ‘are you as angry as I am?’. Yes, she was. Then I phoned the Curriers and the Erickson family. We decided to fight for an inquest.” It took time but Weitzel says sentiment in support of the families was building. “We had the support of Jim Ogilvie. And Norm Macdonald, God bless him he pushed hard for us. Then the BC Federation of Labour put a motion forward to press government for an inquest. What a relief when we finally got it. “Finally the truth will come out. And it did.” Especially satisfying for Weitzel is that of 19 recommendations to improve workplace safety coming out of the inquest, 18 of them were implemented. “That gave us something,” he said. “That has value.” But it doesn’t change the weight of grief, although he will continue to advocate for workplace safety. “My neighbour, who is a volunteer fire fighter, every May 17, he and his wife leave a white rose in my mailbox. He said that day changed his life too. “I remember that

The Sullivan Mine gate on the day of the accident. when I have to speak at some event. I’m not a public speaker, but it’s about the message. It’s about how your life can change.” Today an honour guard stood at the Kimberley Ambulance Station from 8:45 a.m. when the original call came in until 10 a.m. when victims from the Sullivan Mine accident were transported to hospital.

Fine for passing school bus more than doubles TOM FLETCHER Black Press

The fine for passing a B.C. school bus when children are getting on or off is being more than doubled to $368. The previous fine of $167 was one of the lowest in Canada, and a greater deterrent is needed to keep children safe, Transportation Minister Todd Stone said Monday at an announcement at the B.C. legislature. The fine is the same increase as that recently announced for distracted driving penalties. For passing a school bus when its flashing stop lights are activated, drivers already get three penalty points for a first offence.

A second offence within a year would trigger a $300 penalty point assessment on top of the $368 fine, plus an automatic review of the driver’s licence that could result in a suspension. From 2009 to 2014, police in B.C. have issued 1,100 tickets to drivers for failing to stop when school bus warning lights indicate. In the same period, 14 children were injured. Peace River North school bus driver Cindy Dettling attended the announcement. Stone and Public Safety Minister Mike Morris credited her with bringing the issue to the government’s attention when she saw more drivers putting her passengers at risk.

Impeaching Brazil’s President Question: What’s the difference between the coup that overthrew the elected government in Thailand in 2014 and the coup that has now removed the elected government in Brazil? Answer: The coup-makers in Thailand wore uniforms.

T

he Brazilian Senate has just voted 55 to 22 to impeach President Dilma Rousseff. She will be suspended for the next 180 days while the same body tries her on the charge of understating the size of the budget deficit before the last election. If two-thirds of the senators find her guilty, she will be permanently removed from office. Since they have just voted to impeach her by a bigger majority than that, we may take it for granted that she is a goner. As the long evening droned on, it was quite clear that most senators were only interested in the outcome, not the evidence. On several occasions the Speaker even had to tell them to stop talking and put their phones away. This was about politics, not about justice, and the deal was already done. Two justifications have been offered for this unseating of an elected president, but both of them are pretty flimsy. The first is the legal justification, which is that Rousseff’s government tweaked the accounts a bit to make Brazil’s financial situation look less bad before the last election in 2014. She did, but which elected government anywhere does not try to put the best face on its figures? Anyway, nobody believes that this is the real reason for her removal from power. The broader political justification is that she has made a mess of the economy. The economy certainly is in a terrible mess —

in each of the last two years it has shrunk by four percent, one-tenth of the population is unemployed, and inflation is exploding — but every big commodity-exporting country has been in the same mess since the global financial crash of 2008. The demand for their exports simply collapsed. Rousseff didn’t create this crisis, but inevitably she gets the blame for it. That, rather than some obscure legal issue, is why nearly two-thirds of Brazilians think she should be impeached. But while she might done better at managing the crisis, in a democracy political questions like this are normally setby elections, not by imGwynne tled peachment. Dyer The 55 senators who voted to impeach her all know that, but they couldn’t resist the temptation to take her down. Which brings us to the real motive behind all this, and the worrisome comparison with Thailand, where the generals took over in 2014. The Thais, like the Brazilians, evicted their military rulers from power in the 1980s by non-violent political action. As is bound to happen in a democracy, both countries then developed powerful political movements that demanded a redistribution of wealth in favour of the impoverished half of the population. And in both countries the prosperous urban middle classes mobilised against this threat. The hopes of the Thai poor were focussed on Thaksin Shinawatra (prime minister 2001-2006) and later, after the military forced him into exile, his sister Yingluck Shinawatra (prime minister 20112014). In Brazil the left-wing leader was Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva of the Workers’

Party (president 2002-2010), and subsequently his close ally Dilma Rousseff (president 2010-2016). In Thailand the struggle between the rural and urban poor (the ‘yellow shirts’) and the defenders of the economic status quo (the ‘red shirts’) descended into the streets early, and had got quite bloody by the time the generals seized power in 2014. They intervened in favour of the ‘red shirts’, of course, but they seem determined to hold on to power themselves for the forseeable future. Brazil’s politics have been less violent and the military have not intervened (yet), but it is just as much a class struggle — made more intractable by the fact that in Brazil social class is colour-coded. The white half of the population is mostly prosperous, the “pardo”(mixed-race) and black half mostly poor. Nobody will admit that this crisis is about ending government subsidies for the poor, but the crowds demonstrating against Rousseff’s government have been almost entirely white. So is the cabinet sworn in by the new interim president, Michel Temer. But Temer is going to have a very hard time running the country.Outraged Workers’ Party supporters are already being radicalised by the “coup” that has driven Dilma Rousseff from power and the struggle is moving into the streets. Mass demonstrations and barricades are now a common sight, and the protesters will find it hard to resist disrupting the Olympic Games that start in Rio de Janeiro in early August. Which may provide the excuse for the Brazilian right to welcome the military back into power. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist based in London

Letters to the Editor Mary Poppins

If you didn’t see the production of “Mary Poppins” you missed an amazing production by our extremely talented students of Cranbrook. Their enthusiasm spread through the whole audience & they had so much fun working together (memories they will always treasure). I would also like to applaud the “Prop People” (I call them the folks in Black) — there always is a lot going on “behind the scenes” but they moved quickly and there was no delays in the production. Job well done! I am extremely proud to be a citizen of Cranbrook — we are so fortunate to have such a beautiful theater and hope our community will continue to support these programs. Marilyn Gramm Cranbrook

Mary Poppins

We just had to send accolades to the cast

of “Mary Poppins.” It was an exceptional and captivating production that generated pure pleasure. The entire cast performed with such high quality with the support of a busy stage crew. The two young ones who played the children carried their major roles with such ability that belied their ages. We look forward to seeing them in future roles. Thanks to everyone involved to help make it so good. We also have to say how thoroughly we enjoyed “The Odd Couple.” It was another topnotch evening that was so fun and we recommend you don’t miss getting there. We are fortunate to have so many talented thespians in Cranbrook. Mary and Jack Lindquist Cranbrook

Exhibition Baseball

The Kimberley Baseball Cub is looking for players interested in playing a short exhibition schedule against the Cranbrook Baseball Club this season. We are trying to determine the level of

interest in order to plan for a future senior recreational baseball league for our area. A league where our young players going out of the Babe Ruth level or Bandits baseball have a place to play. The 2016 schedule would consist of a one-day-a-week double-header in Kimberley, each game being seven innings. Four games total in two days. The proposed games would be on Sundays on dates not yet determined. There would be a small participation fee to cover the cost of baseballs and necessary liability insurance. If you are interested please contact Roger Tierney at 427-3347. Roger Tierney Kimberley

A bitter election year begins in B.C. BC Views Tom Fletcher

T

here is a nasty edge to proceedings as the B.C. legislature session winds down this week, with the 2017 election campaign already effectively underway. Premier Christy Clark and B.C. Liberal ministers have been under attack over their links to big corporate donors, which will be a major theme for the NDP in the next year. You’ll hear more about forest companies West Fraser and Canfor, which escaped without fines after a 2014 audit found they over-cut their northern timber licences by close to one million cubic metres. Much of this was during salvage logging for pine beetle damage, where healthy trees were taken as well, at a time when forest companies were consolidating, trading Crown timber rights and closing sawmills. NDP MLA David Eby, who knocked Clark out of her Vancouver-Point Grey seat even as she was winning a fourth straight B.C. Liberal majority in 2013, has put the media focus on her posh private fundraisers. “Was this decision made at a dinner party?” Eby asked of the leniency to forest companies, prompting a rare “out of order” ruling from Speaker Linda Reid. Even before the last election and the later Mount Polley tailings dam collapse, the NDP was on the attack about Clark’s support from the chief

Pool photo, The Canadian Press

Premier Christy Clark applauds Finance Minister Mike de Jong’s budget speech, February 2016. executive of mine owner Imperial Metals, who also has major Alberta oilsands holdings and has been one of the B.C. Liberals’ biggest donors. Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett was as indignant as Forests Minister Steve Thomson at the suggestion these corporations were getting lenient treatment in exchange for political cash.

Bennett points out that the Mount Polley dam was inspected and permitted in the mid-1990s under an NDP government, with a design flaw that went undetected. And it remains to be seen what if any charges or fines result against the company, which is already paying a steep price with a long shutdown and expensive environmental repairs.

Letters to the Editor

It also remains to be seen if Bennett, Thomson and other cabinet veterans will run for another term, after what will be 16 years in government. Bennett is adept at needling the NDP, reminding them that mining giant Teck Resources managed to find almost $60,000 to donate to them. He referred to John Horgan as the “ceremonial leader of the NDP,” implying

that Horgan has lost an internal struggle in a party that has turned away from its industrial worker roots. Horgan was a reluctant replacement after Adrian Dix flamed out in 2013 with the sudden Earth Day declaration to oppose the TransMountain oil pipeline expansion. This may have won Eby his upset in leafy Point Grey, but the decision and a wordless weather-vane ad lost Dix the province. One of the traditional highlights of the spring session is the premier’s spending estimates, where the opposition gets several hours to grill the premier on political staff, private jets and anything else they want. Horgan kicked this off last week with his familiar list of criticisms on increased BC Hydro and medical services premiums, soaring house prices in Metro Vancouver and the state of seniors’ care, plus a lengthy examination of Clark’s recent trip to Haida Gwaii. Clark treated the exercise mainly as an extension of question period, firing back at Horgan on his apparent inability to lead his own caucus in support of major construction projects. Horgan abruptly threw in the towel at the end of the first of what had been scheduled to be two days, and fled to Whistler for meetings that were suddenly more important than his legislature duties.

All Together For Victory

Cranbrook wages its annual battle against bloodsuckers F o r the Towns man

The 2016 City of Cranbrook Mosquito Control Program is now underway. The Mosquito Control Contractor has been undertaking biological control efforts directed at the mosquitoes in the larval stage. This is achieved by identifying and monitoring sites where mosquito larvae are present and applying a granular mosquito larvicide, Aquabac. This larvicide contains a naturally occurring bacterium known as Bti, which targets mosquito larvae, but does not harm birds, mammals, beneficial insects or amphibians. This product is registered for this use in Canada. Rainfall, snow melt and rising creek levels in the spring and summer result in the flooding of many low lying areas. Furthermore, standing water in yards, ditches and pools creates ideal conditions for mosquito developments sites. This year has been relatively dry so far, however, the monitoring to date has indicated very high concentrations of larvae in areas that are still holding water. These mosquito development sites have received a first round of

treatment with Aquabac. These sites will be continually monitored and treated throughout the spring and summer. We also ask that you do your part. Effective mosquito control requires the combined the efforts of individual property/homeowners with those of the City of Cranbrook Mosquito Control Program. With water levels lower than average this year sources of standing water from around your property will have a huge potential for mosquito development. Some places to eliminate standing water include: • Clogged gutters and ditches, • Trays under flower pots, • Outside pets’ dishes, • Children’s pools and toys, • Untreated or unmaintained pools or ponds • Bird baths and feeders, • Tarps • Canoes / boats, • Tires Residents are encouraged to call the Mosquito Hotline at (250) 4211294 to report potential mosquito development sites or for more information regarding the Mosquito Control Program.

The municipality must be found to have been negligent in the particular circumstances. Motorists are advised that written notice of intent to claim must be provided to a municipality within two (2) months of the events that give rise to the claim – per The Local Government Act, Section 286. The City deals with a large network of streets and Public Works has a fixed number of work crews, equipment and other resources with which it can respond to and repair road defects. Promise aplenty as Bandits win one at Wood Bat Classic Cranbrook Bandits open American Legion Baseball season with win over Clark Fork, drop contests with Missoula & Calgary Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

The Cranbrook Bandits (1-2-0) opened the American Legion Baseball season south of the border this past weekend, winning one of three games at the annual Loggertown Wood Bat Classic in Libby, Mont. The bats were alive early as Cranbrook’s boys of summer laid a beating on Clark Fork to open the festivities, claiming a 20-2 victory Saturday afternoon, before dropping a tightly-contested affair against the Missoula Pioneers by a 3-2 margin. The Bandits wrapped up the round-robin tournament with a 9-0 shutout loss to the Calgary Redbirds on Sunday. “There’s a lot of stuff that’s promising,” said Paul Mrazek, Bandits head coach, Monday afternoon. “There’s a lot of stuff they kept from last year, which is great.

We’re not starting from square one. “Going into the Legion season, players have to make that adjustment — the game is faster than a lot of the high school teams they play [during spring ball]. There’s some stuff we need to clean up — mechanically, fundamentally there’s some stuff they can get away with [in high school baseball]… We’ve got to have solid mechanics and fundamentals. “I’m not worried about it right now. I know it’s just a matter of focus, getting everyone on the same page.” Linden Meggison fuelled the offense with four RBI in the big triumph over Clark Fork, while Robert Nickell contributed three hits along the way. In total, the Bandits knocked around the Clark Fork pitching staff for 10 hits,

with 10 fielding errors by the visitors also helping to pace the Cranbrook kids.

“There’s a lot of stuff that’s promising... I’m not worried about it right now. I know it’s just a matter of getting everyone on the same page.” Paul Mrazek Bandits Head Coach On the heels of a big win early Saturday, the Bandits battled hard in the second of back-toback outings, but ultimately dropped a onerun tilt to the Pioneers. The Bandits received six strong innings on the mound from veteran right-hander Daniel Mercandelli, who tossed

20 first-pitch strikes en route to burning four Pioneers for strikeouts. At the end of the contest, the Pioneers outhit their opposition by a 7-3 margin, with the Bandits committing three errors along the way, contributing their downfall. After the Bandits pulled ahead 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning, trouble came around the bend as the Pioneers knotted the game in the latter half of the inning. Things went from bad to worse in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Pioneers juiced the bases with two outs on the board before scoring the deciding run. Veteran Rylan D’Etcheverry was sent to the mound to get his team out of the jam, but couldn’t quite complete the task.

Wheat Kings & pretty things Brandon claims Western Hockey League crown, defeating Seattle Thunderbirds in five games to advance to Memorial Cup championship Taylor Rocc a

The Brandon Wheat Kings laid claim to the Ed Chynoweth Cup Friday night, doubling the Seattle Thunderbirds by an 8-4 final in Game 5 of the Western Hockey League championship from Kent, Wash. “We had a good group last year and that paved the way for this year,” Wheat Kings captain Macoy Erkamps told WHL.ca Friday night. “The guys this year just stepped up. There were so many guys that had a huge impact. There are no words to explain this feeling right now. I’m so happy to share it with this coaching staff, these guys and the city of Brandon.” The Wheat Kings (48-18-4-2, 102 points) were the regular season champions of the WHL’s Eastern Conference, finishing second in the league behind only the Victoria Royals (50-16-

3-3, 106 points). The Wheat Kings became the 50th WHL champions, earning the third league title through eight appearances in franchise history (1979, 1996, 2016). With Friday’s victory, the Wheat Kings clinched a berth into the MasterCard Memorial Cup, which will be hosted by the WHL’s Red Deer Rebels beginning May 19. The Wheat Kings defeated the Rebels in five games during the Eastern Conference championship to advance to the WHL title series. Wheat Kings star forward Nolan Patrick (1998) was named 2016 WHL Playoffs Most Valuable Player as he sat alone atop the league scoring charts with 13 goals, 17 assists and 30 points in 21 games. The Wheat Kings made consecutive trips to the WHL championship, falling to the Kelowna Rockets in 2015.

Cranbrook Bandits show promise during first weekend of American Legion Baseball season Continued from page 13 “That’s a real tough spot,” Mrazek said of the circumstance D’Etcheverry faced against the Pioneers. “He closed out the game before and did

a great job. This was a pretty tough situation to put anyone in. It didn’t go our way. But like I told the pitchers — they’re looking at themselves, because that’s the last thing that happened, but we wouldn’t have been in that situation if they hit the ball on the ground early in the game and generated another run or two and if we made a couple routine plays instead of balls going between the legs on routine ground balls. “We’ve got to support our pitchers and make

routine plays.” Wrapping up the tournament Sunday morning, the Bandits were cut down 9-0 by the Calgary Redbirds on the strength five consistent innings from Shaun Logan, who fired 10 first-pitch strikes and collected two strikeouts. Despite coming out on the bottom end in two of three outings,

Mrazek was happy with what he saw on opening weekend, especially considering his crew entered play with only a few days of light and basic practice time. The Bandits return to action for home-opening excitement at Confederation Park in Cranbrook when the Trail Orioles visit town for a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon, the Bandits then host the Kootenai Valley Rangers for another doubleheader, with first pitch slated for 12 p.m. at Confederation Park.

You are all smiles and full of energy, and others might wonder what is up. You might have a serious exchange with a close associate or relative. Don’t be concerned. All’s well that ends well. You could feel like a domestic matter is causing you some tension. Tonight: Make it easy. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) There is much more happening behind the scenes than you might realize. Lying low and not finalizing any decisions right now will be important. Keep smiling, and you will work through a problem with ease. Sometimes talking does not help. Tonight: Get as much rest as possible. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Your energy could blow many people away, but at the present moment, you seem to have tamed some of your personality to focus on a serious matter. Others pick up on your intentions and respond accordingly. Be careful when handling finances. Tonight: Be where people are. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You could be in a situation where

you feel as though you must take the lead if anything is to get done. Perhaps you realize that if you are going to see anything done the way you want it to be, you’d better handle it yourself. Tonight: Be careful not to be too hurtful in an argument. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Know your limits. You have the ability to work through hassles that others cannot. By offering your friendship, you can’t go wrong. Remain direct, but work on detaching in order to gain understanding. Your compassion will be appreciated. Tonight: Try a new pastime. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You understand a partner even better than he or she does. You will see a personal matter open up, and it will allow you to have more influence. Remember how important it is to remain fair and even-keeled. Don’t push so hard to have your way every time! Tonight: Stay open. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Several months ago, my fiancee of two years announced that she wanted to date other people. Although I knew things had not been good between us, I was devastated. We met on the Internet, and I saw that she was back on the same website. I talked to her, hoping she would give me a sign that she wanted to get back together, but she said she wanted to see other men and that I should see other women. I was desperate and even logged onto her page on the dating website, hoping to get through to her. After a few days of her not responding, I started getting messages from other women. I made a date with one of them, and we ended up having sex afterward. I felt terrible about it. I called the woman and told her I couldn’t see her anymore because I was still in love with someone else. I continued to call and text my ex, even though I knew she was seeing other men. This went on for about six weeks. Last week, my ex and I had a wonderful day together and ended up cuddling under a blanket on her sofa. Things started to get romantic, and she asked if I had been out with or had sex with anyone. I answered truthfully. She became angry and said she did not want to see me again. While I’m not making excuses for something I should not have done, I am confused by her attitude. She said she expected me to know that she still loved me, even though she never responded when I tried to get back together. Why did she insist that we date other people? Am I as bad as she is making me out to be? I don’t know what to say that I haven’t already said. -- Heart Torn Out Dear Heart: We suggest saying “goodbye and good riddance.” Your ex wasn’t satisfied with you nor committed to your relationship. If you got back together, we suspect she would break your heart repeatedly. She also expects you to read her mind, which is unfair and manipulative, and gives her a reason to leave whenever she gets bored. We agree that you should not have hopped in the sack with the first woman you met, but you were essentially unattached and free to do as you pleased. We know you are heartbroken, but we hope you can also see that you dodged a bullet with this woman. You deserve to find someone who cherishes and respects you. Dear Annie: “Not a Creepy Guy” said his son’s fiancee thinks he’s creepy, for no particular reason. Another reader said all young women think middle-aged guys are creepy. I am a woman in my mid-30s and I have worked in health care for the past 10 years. I have discovered that any amount of polite, friendly attention can quickly turn a man, no matter his age, into Mr. Creepy. I have been grabbed and cornered and had to endure inappropriate comments. Now I do not treat any man as a safe and respectable human being. -- Better Safe Than Sorry Dear Better: We have to wonder what men you are encountering that they are ALL like this. You should never have to tolerate being grabbed and cornered, but your experience seems so lopsided that you might want to reconsider your work environment. The Early Years

A Powerful Tool in Pregnancy Leonor Trembl ay

Breathexperience offers a path integrating emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of our being.

B

reathexperience or ‘Middendorf Breath work,’ was developed by Ilse Middendorf in Germany, and is today is one of the leading somatic practices in Europe and around Berkeley, California. This practice develops the consciousness of allowing the breath to come and go on its own, without the intervention of our will. People come to breath classes because they want to reconnect with their own personal resources, and bring balance and health into their lives. Breathexperience offers a path integrating emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of our being. The three principles that work together in healing and balancing through Breathexperience are: • Allowing the breath to find its own natural rhythm • Sensation and awareness of breath movement throughout the body • Presence and participation in every breath cycle: Inhale-Exhale-Pause How can these three

principles of Breathexperience give support during pregnancy? Practicing and integrating the principles of Breathexperience helps pregnant women understand and live through the natural process of labour and birthing. Allowing, surrendering to, and trusting the natural forces that work in the body will help support the intense experience of a birth. Allowing the breath instead of contracting into the pain is a key. Fear tightens - allowed breath frees, opens up the body, and facilitates the natural flow of the

birthing process. When a pregnant woman senses her breath movement, this helps her to connect deeper and develop her sensory awareness. Through this practice she also deepens the sensational and emotional connection with her child in the womb, which gives the mother a satisfying stronger bond with her baby. The baby is able to sense and recognize the rhythm of the mother, and thus experiences her breathing as a soft, almost rocking massage. Women who worked with Breathex-

perience before labour stated: learning to stay present in the breath cycle helped during labour to focus on the breath instead of focusing on the pain. Breathexperience also inspires husbands/ partners to remind mothers to focus on their breath. Being the reminder gives partners something important to do and it keeps them busy and connected! Finally, we see the beautiful truth of a conscious breath cycle in the very moment of birth. The child, when it takes its first inhale, experiences an expansion.

At the same time the mother, by letting go of the child, experiences a consolidation during her exhale. And then there is a pause: a moment of peace, joy, and bliss for all, mother and child and father/partner! It is crucial for this very special moment of life - the birth of a child - that the mother and the father/partner work with Breathexperience. It is in this moment that the breath of life enters the newborn baby and determines the future path... Breathexperience sessions are taught in groups or individually. Each session offers specific exercises for pregnant mothers depending on what trimester they are in, but it is especially useful for labour. Every second Saturday/Sunday of the month Breathexperience is part of the program offered for couples at IDEAL Society in Jaffray, in collaboration with the midwives of Cranbrook. Leonor Tremblay is a certified Breathexperience teacher for the past six years at IDEAL. She

Strong winds, high temperatures and no sign of rain could mean another difficult week for crews battling wildfires in northeastern British Columbia. Fire information officer Kevin Skrepnek says the Fort St. John area remains the hardest hit region, with 41 of the province’s 62 active wildfires. Environment Canada were calling for temperatures of up to 26 C Monday while Skrepnek says firefighters are bracing for strong, sustained winds of 40 to 60 km/h over the next days. An evacuation order was issued Sunday for 130 homes near the 150-square-kilometre Beatton fire, while the Siphon Creek blaze northeast of Fort St. John is now estimated at 616-square kilometres. About one-quarter of that fire is on the Alberta side of the provincial boundary. Environment Canada is calling for rain and temperatures between 7 C and 14 C on Thursday and Friday, but the sun is expected to be back by next weekend.

With the warmer temperature, more people are venturing outside for recreational activities, including hunting. Currently it is open season for many species, including black bears and bearded turkeys. There are some things to be aware of before hunting, including obtaining a proper hunting license. BC Conservation Officer, Frank deBoon, says there are regulations in place to protect B.C. wildlife, including a ban on bringing animal carcasses in from other provinces. “From out of province, any ungulates, like moose, elk or deer, hunters can’t bring any into B.C.

“They have to be cut and wrapped and then the antlers can be brought in but they need to be bleached out of the skull so there is no brain tissue that comes along,” said deBoon. This is protection from Chronic Wasting Disease, a disease similar to Mad Cow Disease. “That is what most people relate it to. If it does reach B.C., there is just no way to stop it. Just animals coming into contact with each other can spread it or the pathogens can be dormant in the ground for 10 years or more so the animals feeding would pick it up,” said deBoon. Conservation officers regularly patrol the Alberta/B.C. border to check for people failing to respect this regulation. The disease spread into Alberta from Saskatchewan, and authorities are hoping to keep it out of B.C.
