Cranbrook Food Bank has gluten-free surplus ALEESHA KOERSEN

The Cranbrook Food Bank Society received a shipment of gluten free food at the beginning of this month. However, due to lack of public knowledge, most of the food has remained at the Food Bank. If the food is given out before its expira-

tion dates, the Food Bank will have no choice but to throw it away. While a gluten-free diet may seem like a fad, there are some who require gluten free options. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. Those who suffer from celiac disease are unable to

digest the protein properly; therefore, need to cut it out of their diet. Tom Murphy, a volunteer at the Food Bank who is celiac himself understands the cost of buying gluten free. “We want to get this information out the public who needs this because gluten

free food is so expensive,” says Murphy in a phone call with the Townsman. Local grocery stores donate food three times a week to the Food Bank. Other community groups and members also collect and donate. The food is stored, organized and put into ham-

pers by volunteers for those who visit the Food Bank. Over 400 hampers are given out a month, but gluten-options are not readily available. The three-pallet shipment of gluten-free food includes flour, cookies, crackers and other food that is

traditionally made with rye, wheat, or barley. The Cranbrook Food Bank Society encourages those who are in need of gluten-free food to stop by. The Food Bank is located at 104 8 ave south and is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 am until 2 pm.

CKDI

Initiative nears its funding target C AROLYN GR ANT

Last fall, when the Cranbrook-Kimberley Development Initiative was just in its infancy, Kimberley Mayor Don McCormick stated that the goal was to get 50 businesses on board, each contributing $5,000. That would create a bank account of $250,000, with the hope that matching funds could be leveraged through the Columbia Basin Trust. The funds will be used for targeted sales and marketing activities that promote the advantages of doing business in the Cranbrook Kimberley area.

Not too early for forthcoming Gran Fondo Early Bird registration deadline May 31 for Kootenay Rockies Gran Fondo SUBMIT TED

Despite the recent rain, summer is coming soon and so is the first early bird deadline May 31 to register for the 4th Annual Kootenay Rockies Gran Fondo (KRGF) to be held Sept. 10 on the scenic Rails to Trails course between Cranbrook and Kimberley. KRGF chairperson Glenn Dobie says almost 100 riders have registered already and organizers are hoping to exceed the 360 total that participated in last year’s highly successful event. Participants can save at least $20 by registering early for the event and they can also win two nights accommodation at the Trickle Creek Lodge in Kimberley. The KRGF is fast becoming one of the most popular Fondos on the circuit.and participants seem to like everything about the Fondo, Dobie says. “They love the extraordinary volunteer support, drop dead gorgeous scenery and rid-

ing through Kimberley Platzl.” Significant credit must be given to the local business community and residents of Cranbrook and Kimberley, who have strongly supported the Gran Fondo from its inception in 2013, Dobie says. “Without the widespread support of the business community in both Cranbrook and Kimberley we would not have been able to develop such a quality event.” But it’s the extraordinary enthusiasm of the Fondo volunteers that makes the event so popular, he says. “We hear back from the out of town cyclists how incredible the support and cheering of the volunteers is in driving them on.” Taylor Adams Chartered Accountants is the major sponsor of the KRGF and the money raised goes to a wide variety of local charities, service clubs and organizations including the three Rotary Clubs in

The start of the Kootenay Rockies Gran Fondo, September, 2015. Cranbrook and Kimberley, two local Lions Clubs, the Kimberley Volunteer Ski Patrol and the North Star Rails to Trails Society, which last year received $4,000 from the event. As in previous years,

the 2016 Gran Fondo is based at the St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino with three courses of different lengths beginning and ending at St. Eugene. The Piccolo runs 58 km along the Rails to Trails course to

Kimberley and returns to St. Eugene via the Cranbrook Airport road. The 102 km Medio Fondo runs the same route except it goes past Kimberley through Meadowbrook and Wasa before returning

to St. Eugene. And the 152 km Gran Fondo course goes further yet, following the same route extended to the Wardner junction before returning to St. Eugene. A luncheon buffet

with live musical entertainment will follow in the Pavilion at St. Eugene with numerous free prizes. All participants receive a Dri-fit T-shirt, water bottle. CLIF Bar, and special services such as mobile mechanical & medical support along all routes. There are also five nutritional aid and water stations and a post ride bike wash after the event as well as prizes for the fastest time on the King & Queen Challenge on the Ft. Steele Hill.” Over its three years, the KRGF has developed into a major seasonal attraction for the area and plays a key role in attracting more tourists and business to the region, says Dobie. “I think the real key to its success it it’s volunteer-driven, non-profit and benefiting the community through the support of so many businesses.” Submitted by the Cranbrook Sunrise Rotary Club

SPCA looking to lock up the locals in fundraiser Submitted

The BC SPCA East Kootenay Branch is gearing up to hold their largest fundraiser of the year, the BCSPCA’s Most Wanted Kennel Lock In. It will take place on June 1 from 1 pm-4 pm outside of Boston

Pizza. There are 17 amazing community members from Cranbrook and Kimberley taking part in this initiative in hopes of raising $20,000 to go towards medical costs at the East Kootenay Branch. The East Kootenay

Branch takes in over 900 animals a year. The medical costs exceeded $85,000 in 2015 and it is expected that this cost will increase in 2016. “We are very proud that our live release rate,( which is more animals finding forever homes and having

healthy, happy lives), is now at 94 per cent, said Brenna Baker, the BCSPCA East Kootenay branch manager. “This is great news but it also means our medical costs are at an all-time high. We are saving more lives but a lot of the animals that come

into our care not only need a spay/neuter and vaccinations but they also may need dental work or emergency medical. The minimum dental cost that we have had this year has been $850. This fundraiser will go towards helping with some of these costs.” The way the fundraiser works is people can pledge the participants in person or online at snapd.at/ pewvz2w. In order to lock up the BC SPCA’s Most Wanted there needs to be a minimum of $1000 in pledges for that individual prior to June 1st. The Most Wanted

list include: Mayor Lee Pratt, Mayor Don McCormick, Steve Zsillei from Denham Ford, Karla Shalley from The Playpen, Tamara L’Hoost from Summit 107, Jason De Rijk from SideKick Stickers, Chris Thom from Rocky Mountain Diesel, Carrie Schafer from eKnow, Don MacMillian from the City of Cranbrook and the Kootenay Ice, Jennifer Mouly from Velvet Moss, Gina Martin from Jim Pattison Broadcast Group, Mark Salvador from Sandor Rental, Janice Sommerfeld from Snapd, Shane Stewart from Melody Motors, Chris Botterill from Genex Marketing,

MARKET QUOTATIONS

Steve Mercandelli from Cranbrook Dodge, and Brenna Baker from the BCSPCA! On June 1, the participants will be picked up by the BC SPCA’s Cruelty Officer and locked in the kennel that will be set up outside of Boston Pizza. There will also be a Beers for Barks Pub Night at Boston Pizza on June 1st beginning at 6pm. Tickets are $25 and include a beer and a burger, live music by Wild Honey, a silent auctions and loads of fun! The Northstar Rails to Trails Society has just completed two more projects to enhance the already very popular attraction. Both projects were initiated last year but directors held off until spring to finish them. The society wanted to offer an educational component to the experience and produced eight interpretive signs at various locations along the 28 km trail. Each sign has information and history of the area. The signs are located at the Kimberley trail head kiosk, Chapman Camp/Knighton Road crossing, Wycliffe Flats, Wycliffe close to St Mary’s River Crossing, Six Mile Lane over looking Shadow Mountain Golf Course and the Cranbrook trailhead kiosk. The second project was the installation of bike racks at the three washroom locations; Cranbrook Trailhead,

CKDI nears funding goal Continued from page 1 That goal has almost been reached, with 47 Cranbrook Kimberley area businesses having committed $5,000. McCormick is confident that the last three businesses will be found. “We had a meeting of all the stake holders last week,” McCormick said. “Everyone got an update of where we’re at and a board of directors was elected.” The board of eight, has two Kimberley members, Joanne Kitt of Caldwell Agencies and Ted Funston from the Kimberley Alpine Resort. There are six Cranbrook members, Hans Mehrle - Selkirk Signs; Bill Sanderman - Applied Compression Systems; Rick Jensen - New Dawn Developments; Marko Maryniak - Rockies Law; Jody Burke East Kootenay Credit Union; Ken Bridge Bridge Interiors.

Now that everything is in place, it’s time to get to work, McCormick says. “We’ve already had a half dozen leads between Kimberley and Cranbrook and we are about to invest in a marketing campaign in the Lower Mainland,” McCormick said. “We’re pretty excited about it.” One of the advantages that CKDI stresses is the combination of the lower cost of doing business and the great lifestyle the area has to offer. On the website is a list of all the reasons a business should choose to locate to Kimberley or Cranbrook. Resource rich. We’re a critical hub for mining, forestry and other primary resources. We have a strong sector infrastructure and an experienced workforce, and we’ve

been that way for over a century. Accessible. The region is located on Canada’s trans-national Highway #3. Alberta is just a 2 hour drive and we’re only 1 hour to the US. Crossroads. We’re covered in every direction, coming and going, situated at the junction of Highway 3 East-West and Highway 95 NorthSouth. Shipping excellence. Shipping and transport infrastructure are in place, including air, rail and multi-modal facilities. Flight central. Both major centres of Cranbrook and Kimberley are situated just 20 minutes from the Canadian Rockies International Airport. Market central. Our region boasts an immediate market of 100,000 people, and an additional 4.5 million within a 4 hour drive. Work ready. A high

quality local labour force exists with higher than average education levels and an incredibly diverse array of talent and experience. Education empowered. The College of the Rockies is well renowned, specializing in industry partnerships for trade and contract training. Competitive value. Low land and labour costs are a significant competitive advantage, particularly when combined with existing amenities and infrastruture. Unparalleled lifestyle. Rocky Mountain living, recreational opportunities and strong communities promote labour force stability and provide attractive incentives for all employees. Libya: The Hesitation Two-Step

W

hen “Prime Minister” Fayez alSarraj of the “Government of National Accord” GNA) arrived in Libya a month ago, US Secretary of State John Kerry said that it was “not the time for obstructionists to hold back progress.” A noble sentiment, but it does make you want to ask Kerry: When would be the right time for obstructionists to hold back progress? Next Tuesday? It was just one more slice of the meaningless waffle that passes for policy statements when Western statesmen discuss what to do about the Libya mess. The country has collapsed into violence and chaos since NATO bombers (with sporadic help from local militias) drove long-ruling dictator Muammar Gaddafi from power in 2011, and Kerry has no good plan for dealing with it. Sarraj’s GNA merely adds a third contender to the two rival governments that already claim to rule the country, and not one of them actually controls much territory. It is the hundreds of militias that really control Libya’s territory, and the fortunes of the contending governments rise and fall depending on how many militias will agree to back them (in return for various favours and subsidies, of course). Western governments are finally paying attention to Libya mainly because ISIS (Islamic State) fighters are active there, and because refugees are flowing into Europe from Libya again now that the route through Turkey and Greece has been blocked. The Italian, British and French governments have been talking about sending 6,000 troops into Libya to train a Libyan army that could take on ISIS and defeat it. There are already American, British, French

and Italian special forces teams in the country, and there have been at least four American air strikes against ISIS camps in Libya since December. It all sounds like a full-scale Western military intervention in Libya is imminent – except that it has been sounding like that for the past six months, and the intervention still hasn’t happened. There is a curious reluctance to take the final step. The Western interventionists are right to hesitate. The fear that ISIS will take over most of Libya if they don’t put troops in is grossly Gwynne exaggerated: lately ISIS has been losing ground in Libya, Dyer not gaining it. More importantly, ISIS can never be eliminated entirely unless there is a single, legitimate Libyan government backed by a disciplined army. So the first priority for the Western powers is to create a government that has the legal authority to invite Western troops in to help. “The GNA [Government of National Accord] is the only entity that can unify the country,” Kerry explained. “It is the only way to generate the cohesion necessary to defeat Daesh [IS].” So the Western great powers have just created such a government, using the United Nations as their vehicle. The GNA is not a Libyan initiative; its members were picked by foreigners, and and that is how Fayez Sarraj found himself the prime minister of the Government of National Accord. Farraj is a respected non-partisan figure, the kind of person who gets appointed to head up a National Commission for this or that. If either of the existing claimants to be the Libyan government were inclined to hand over power to the GNA, Farraj would be just the sort of reassuring chap to win them over.

But neither contender – the General National Congress in the capital, Tripoli, or the elected House of Representatives in Tobruk, a thousand kilometres to the east – is inclined to do anything of the sort. Indeed, Farraj was unable to fly into Tripoli with his retinue because the General National Congress closed the airport. He only finally arrived by sea, thanks to the US Navy. Ordinary Libyans might support the GNA, if only out of despair. They are heartily sick of the inter-militia fighting, the financial chaos, and the lack of any government services, and they might well accept a foreign-backed “government” with lots of money and troops at its disposal. But it’s not ordinary Libyans who have to be convinced to hand over power. It’s the local politicians and the militias who control them, and they won’t do it. Maybe foreign firepower could compel them to accept the GNA’s authority, but the Western powers are not willing to commit their troops to that sort of open-ended military operation. They just want to go after ISIS and the people-smugglers, and if the GNA can give them the legal cover to do that, it will have served its purpose. And even then they may decide in the end not to commit Western troops on the ground, because ISIS is not really such a big deal in Libya. Amongst the several hundred thousand members of the innumerable Libyan militia groups, ISIS has at most 5,000 fighters. It does some spectacularly nasty things, like murdering 22 Egyptian Christian foreign workers on a beach last January, but it only controls one smallish city (Sirte) and an adjacent stretch of coastline. The hesitation two-step may continue. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist are published in 45 countries.

OPINION/EVENTS CREATING CARING COMMUNITIES

Fentanyl: A horse of different color ALEX SHERSTOBITOFF

W

hat is Fentanyl? Where is it coming from? Why are people dying from it? Why are people taking it? Why can’t people just stop taking it? What can we do? We do know that media have identified Fentanyl deaths and suspected Fentanyl deaths throughout B.C., Alberta and across Canada. The recent BC coroner’s report for 2015 states that there were 465 apparent illicit drug overdose deaths in 2015, a 27 per cent increase in deaths from 2014 (366 deaths). We saw 62 deaths in a period of one month in December 2015. While the majority of illicit drug overdose deaths do not involve Fentanyl, preliminary data suggests that the proportion of illicit drug overdose deaths for which Fentanyl was detected (alone or in combination with other drugs) increased to approximately 30 per cent in 2015. In previous years, the proportion was: • 2012 = 5% • 2013 = 15% • 2014 = 25% At this point it seems Fentanyl is bringing up more questions than answers. We are seeing an alarming increase of overdose and deaths in BC that are fentanyl related although statistics show there are still more overdose deaths that are non-fentanyl related. It seems no matter the great efforts to stop the flow of pharmaceutical narcotics and illicit drugs we are still seeing increasingly high rates of overdose deaths.

Our main defence against opioid overdose is Naloxone accompanied by overdose prevention strategies. A pilot project initiated Aug 31, 2012 to now a program of BC Centre for Disease Control is providing opportunity for people who use illicit opioids to access the life-saving antidote Naloxone. Physicians and Nurse Practitioners are able to prescribe and dispense Naloxone but currently they must be connected to the BCCDC Take Home Naloxone program. A brief Naloxone training is provided to the consumer before it can be dispensed. Naloxone has helped many to reverse the effects of opioid overdose if administered on time. The hope is to have Naloxone accessible for anyone including family members or friends of people who use opioids. Anecdotal reports from people who have used Naloxone on a person in opioid overdose claim Fentanyl overdoses are using more than the two vials available in the kit to revive an overdose. (A Naloxone kit has two vials with .4mg in each vile.) A report from a hospital emergency physician indicates emergency protocol is to have a continuous intravenous drip of Naloxone for fentanyl overdose until the physician feels the person is cleared of overdose. Recommendations: • Provide warnings and information to users and practitioners, (Building Community Awareness); • Drug Treatment Provision (Prioritizing drug treatment program referrals, pro-

viding timely treatment, increasing availability of Opioid Substitution treatment, heroin prescription programs); • Harm Reduction Initiatives (More safe injection facilities, drug testing and other party safe initiatives, involve and work with people who use drugs); • Law Enforcement/Corrections (Participation on committees with health & social service agencies, investigating drug supply lines); • Regulating Prescriptions (Bringing prescription patches back to pharmacy, encouraging health care providers to look deeper than simply characterizing people living with pain as drug seekers); • Effective integrated models of primary & community health care; Therefore, the onus is on health care and treatment agencies, social service agencies, enforcement, correction agencies and the people who are at risk of addiction and overdose to meet, to work together, to find solutions to what seems to be idling, in the background and taking lives. ” For copies of the complete article, send a request to gary@ankors.bc.ca Resources in our communities exist at ANKORS 250-426-3383, East Kootenay Addictions 1-877-489-4344, Ktunaxa Health 250-420-2700 or Street Angel 250-420-2756 The Safe Communities Cranbrook Fentanyl Engagement Awareness Committee February 2016

Harper-style ads carry on in B.C.

B

Tuesday, May 24, 2016 Page 7

y now you’ve probably seen the provincial government ads, on TV or Facebook, with cute children lined up for a footrace at their school track meet. They are interspersed these days with ads urging people to sign up for trades training, an extension of the “B.C. Jobs Plan” blitz that surrounded Premier Christy Clark before the 2013 election. Not yet on TV, but waiting in the wings, are exciting new exemptions from B.C.’s property transfer tax (for buyers of new homes only) and expanded Medical Services Plan premium assistance, which will be pitched mainly to seniors. Both measures were announced in the February budget. That’s public service advertising, explained a stone-faced Andrew Wilkinson, minister responsible for the wave of government ads that will crest next spring. The track meet spot is to remind parents of kids born after 2006 that they can receive a $1,200 grant by setting up their children’s Registered Education Savings Plan at an eligible bank or credit union. The TV spot for the education grant has a confident narrator speaking as the plucky multicultural kids begin their sprint: “B.C.’s plan to protect Canada’s strongest economy is working. Balanced Budget 2016 means we can keep taxes low and invest in B.C. families.”

They used a male narrator, I suppose so it wouldn’t sound too much like a Christy Clark campaign speech broadcast at taxpayer expense. This grant program is a leftover from the Gordon Campbell years, when the province banked $1,200 per child from its natural gas windfall on behalf of kids born after 2007. The Clark government BC VIEWS expanded eligibility by a year and has made a series of anTom nouncements as the money Fletcher was doled out directly to parents. The ads are working, Wilkinson assured reporters. Monitoring has shown a “substantial increase” in parents signing up to receive the grant. Two cheers. With the help of sophisticated marketing, the B.C. government is able to give money away with brisk efficiency, as they did with the rebate to parents in the midst of the last teachers’ strike. The Trudeau Liberal government has begun to rein in federal government advertising, which grew to new heights with the Stephen Harper government’s “Economic Action Plan,” the model for Clark’s blue-tinted “Jobs Plan” series. Federal Treasury Board President Scott Brison has started with a ban on taxpayer-funded ads in the three months preceding a scheduled federal election. His “interim”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

measures also include banning the use of party colour schemes in taxpayer-funded ads, and promoting programs that don’t yet exist. Wilkinson declared that the B.C. Liberals had not stooped to that level, as the Harper Tories did with a proposed program to retrain unemployed people. “Our advertisements are fact-based,” he said. “They’re based on existing programs that have been budgeted, and they’re designed to engage British Columbians.” The Trudeau government has not yet delivered on its election promise to appoint an independent advertising commissioner, to work out of the federal Auditor General’s office. It’s unfortunate that yet another expansion of the bureaucracy is needed to keep politicians’ hands out of the till, but we seem to have reached that point in Canada. There have been no such reforms proposed for B.C., or as it is currently known, “Canada’s strongest economy.” At least we’ve been spared the bill for boasting about “The Best Place On Earth” in recent years. The B.C. NDP has advocated an Auditor General-run system for keeping partisan politics out of government advertising. For the second year, the NDP bill to compel that was tabled and ignored by the government. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

The KEYSA (Kootenay East Youth Soccer Association) U16 Boys squad almost pulled out a win in their first tournament of the season, earning a silver medal against their top competitors, the Nelson U16 Selects in the second half of the final game. The stage was set in Nelson at the annual Terry Walgreen Tournament at Lakeside Fields. The Rovers U16 Boys were tied for first in their category going into the final, having won two games against Creston and Nelson U15 Selects and tied one game with their rivals the Nelson U16 Selects the day before earning a spot in the finals. 2-1 lead going into the second half. Playing hard until the very end and demonstrating equal skill, control and stamina to Nelson, Rovers were unlucky in pulling out a win with Nelson scoring 2 final goals in the second half. The team is coached by head coach Pat Widmeyer and assistant coach Juho Pelkonen. “The boys and coaches had high hopes going into this tournament as we’ve been practicing hard and have been looking

great,” Widmeyer said. “Their performance was high throughout this tournament with limited mistakes. Given this was their first real chance to play together this year, I am pretty proud of the outcome and know there are good things to come for the team this year.” Whitecaps Regional Coach, Sam Heap, was also in attendance to support KEYSA rep teams and was on the U16 Boys’ bench during the final. Heap was also happy with the U16

Boys’ tournament outcome and recapped his thoughts of their performance this weekend: “This is a standout KEYSA team with great potential and a very bright future ahead of them should they continue to work hard for each other.” Heap has been hired as KEYSA Technical Director this year while also continuing to lead the Whitecaps Kootenays East Prospect Academy for the past 3 years in Cranbrook BC. His involvement has led to an in-

creased improvement and higher level of play for all teams and players throughout KEYSA. The KEYSA Rovers U16 Boys are training for a run to represent the Kootenay region at Provincials this year. The next tournament for many of the KEYSA rep and development teams, including the U16 Boys, is in Invermere at the Clash of the Titans tournament the last weekend of May.

It was a good weekend for Los Amigos, a Cranbrook soccer team, which finished in third place at a tournament in Creston as part of the community’s annual Blossom Festival. With some tough games on Saturday, Los Amigos were held scoreless in two matches against Rossland and Creston, however, Sunday produced some more positive results with two back-to-back wins over Crawford Bay.

Cyclists, skateboarders, stay off the sidewalks, City says Submitted

Those who like to ride their bikes or skateboards are asked to please stay off the sidewalks around the City. City staff fields a regular number of calls from the public every spring and summer complaining of some near misses between riders, boarders and pedestrians – especially in the

downtown. Under the City’s Streets & Traffic Bylaw “no person shall ride a cycle, which includes a skateboard, on any sidewalk”. Being caught by Bylaw Services riding a bicycle or skateboard on a sidewalk can result in a $25 fine. If you have questions, please contact City of Cranbrook Bylaw Services at 250-489-0263.

We’ll be hosting a public meeting with representatives from BC Hydro, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to provide information regarding Columbia Basin reservoir levels, fish operations and our programs and local activities.

City makes changes to downtown parking Submit ted

Those who frequent downtown Cranbrook on a regular basis will notice some changes to two parking lots, following a review undertaken by the City of all municipal lots and overall downtown parking. The number of leased parking stalls has increased in both the 9th Avenue parking lot (located on 9th Avenue between Baker and 1st Street South) and the McKinnon parking lot (located between Cranbrook Street North and 1st Street North behind the Bank of Montreal and East Kootenay Credit Union on Baker Street). New signage indicating the parking changes were installed at all three entrances to the McKinnon lot. Painting of “RESERVED” on the cement barriers and stall numbers to indicate reserved parking was undertaken at both the 9th Avenue and McKinnon lots. “We strongly encourage those who

work, shop and have appointments downtown to pay extra attention when using 2 hour parking in these two lots, to make sure they are not occupying a reserved stall,” says Don MacMillan, Bylaw Services Officer with the City of Cranbrook. Bylaw Services will be patrolling these lots on a regular basis to ensure the new rules are being followed. The parking inventory review began in December 2015 to implement the use of new parking identification cards that are now issued to reserved space holders. The card allows for easy identification by Bylaw Services Officers and Parking Meter Attendant of vehicles being parked in reserved stalls without proper authorization from the City; thus facilitating the ticketing. There are approximately 558 public parking spaces in the downtown area; this includes both metered and 2-hour spaces.

When working with household cleaning products and other potentially hazardous materials, the City of Cranbrook is asking residents and businesses to be careful that this material doesn’t make it into our storm sewer system. The City of Cranbrook with assistance from the BC Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and the Regional District of East Kootenay, created an informational newsletter to provide helpful tips and information on how to help minimize the risk of polluting our local waterways. ‘Storm Sewers & Water Quality’ provides information on how to properly dispose of hazardous materials, how to properly treat and drain swimming pools and hot tubs and simple tips on how to minimize the risk of accidental water pollution around your home, your yard and around your vehicle. ‘Storm Sewers & Water Quality’ is available on the City’s website at www.cranbrook.ca or is available for pick up at City Hall.

SLOW DOWN, MOVE OVER: HELP KEEP OUR ROADSIDE AND EMERGENCY WORKERS SAFE Roadside maintenance workers and emergency staff are out all year round and it is important for drivers to be aware of their presence, slow down and move over to give them the space they need to be safe. The City of Cranbrook has many staff members, especially from Public Works, working on our streets year round and not just in the warmer months. This isn’t limited to just Public Works staff but also Fire Services, RCMP and Ambulance staff, other emergency workers and tow truck operators. When driving through the City and you see vehicles with flashing red, blue or yellow lights, please be aware that workers are present. Reduce your speed and allow extra space when passing the vehicles or accident scene, where it is safe to do so.

PREPARE YOUR HOME TO PROTECT AGAINST WILDFIRE Owners of homes and properties that are not conscious of the risk, not only pose a threat to their properties, but also threaten neighbours and emergency services personnel. The reality is that if you don’t take basic steps to minimize the wildfire risk around your home or property, emergency services will focus their response on properties they can save -- the rest will have to fend for themselves. There are plenty of public education tools available to provide advice on wildfire preparedness for individuals and homeowners, which can teach how to adapt to living with the threat of wildfire and how to work with your community and your neighbours to prevent loss of life and property in the event of a wildfire. If you have questions about techniques, materials, and procedures, contact Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services, provincial forestry personnel or local landscaping groups. You can also visit http://bcwildfire.ca/Prevention/firesmart. or http://cranbrook.ca/our-city/city-departments/fireand-emergency-services/firesmart/ for plenty of great information to help you prepare

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You will be more positive and expressive of your feelings in the next few weeks. However, you could feel volatile if your expectations are not met, especially within a partnership. Use more self-expression, and follow through. Tonight: Out late. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You could have many strong feelings, and might wonder which one would be most acceptable to express when handling a personal issue. Use care with spending, especially if it involves your profession or travel. You easily could go overboard. Tonight: Opt to be a duo. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) One-on-one relating results in much better interactions than when you’re in a group. Strong feelings between you and a friend mark a conversation, even if it is about a dry topic. Be careful not to become touchy if you don’t get the response you desire. Tonight: All smiles.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Others have a nice way of expressing their caring; however, you might be holding back some strong feelings. You’ll want to know more before you discuss your interests. This caution will seem appropriate to you, but your hesitancy could worry people. Tonight: Accept a suggestion. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) A friend expresses his or her thoughts, which could be flattering to you. Your creativity is likely to flourish. A loved one might deal with his or her insecurities by being argumentative. You know how to stabilize the situation, if you so choose. Tonight: Where the action is. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Try a new approach or a different suggestion. Pressure builds to act very confident and secure, while inside your emotions seem to rage. You might see this issue play out around you as well. Be more upbeat, and detach. Tonight: Change the mood of the moment. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Remain secure within your immediate circle. Open up to an offer that seems demanding. You might sense that you are seeing only the tip of the iceberg right now. Test the waters, and ask important questions. Tonight: Mosey on home; you’ve got some thinking to do. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You are willing to speak your mind, but will others listen? You have strong feelings that you easily could swallow if need be. A loved one might try to make peace, but only after he or she realizes that you have triggered some uproar. Tonight: Respond to someone’s request. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might come off more strongly than you had intended. Rethink your word choice as well as your tone. Your message will get through with a bit more softness. It is clear that you know what you want and are not willing to compromise. Tonight: Avoid a quarrel that is a no-win situation. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You could feel re-energized

and understood. You might be unusually gracious and caring when it comes to dealing with others in the morning. By the afternoon, some frustration is likely to emerge. Your sharpness can’t be matched or missed. Tonight: Paint the town red. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You have a way of communicating that baffles many yet draws others toward you. Don’t put yourself in the position of wondering what will happen, but observe and weigh the possibilities. A friend could become difficult to deal with. Tonight: Lighten up the mood. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Once you get over some self-imposed restrictions, you’ll feel far more content. You might not see the big picture until you understand more of your feelings. Know exactly what you want. A boss could drive a hard bargain. Tonight: Use care around those who feel fragile. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: We live in a friendly town. Yet, we have some residents who are terribly disrespectful people of other people’s property. We’ve had dogs and love dogs, but we would never think of taking our dog to our neighbor’s lawn to do its duty. We’ve consulted several experts and they all say that the dog’s urine can cause brown spots on the lawn. We even paid to have new sod put in. We’ve asked people not to do this, but the minute our back is turned, they ignore us. We aren’t allowed to put up “No Dogs Allowed” signs, so that doesn’t help. But we have a number of dog parks these folks can use instead of our lawn. Apologies to those dog owners who do the right thing, but how do we get inconsiderate dog owners to behave? -- Totally Confused Dear Confused: Dogs “mark” their territory and if they have used your lawn in the past, they are likely to make a beeline for it again. Are there laws in your “friendly” town that prohibit dogs from using private lawns? If so, report each incident to the police. Another option is to go outside whenever you see someone coming with their dog and not leave until the owners pass by completely. However, you can’t always be there each time, so here are some other suggestions: Spray a diluted mixture of cayenne pepper (or ammonia, vinegar or citrus) and water on your lawn, or look for a commercially available dog-repellant spray. Get a motion-activated sprinkler. Build a fence. We hope one of these works. Dear Annie: My child died recently. My friends tell me they don’t know what to say. I don’t know which is worse, someone who says something inappropriate or someone who says nothing. I know how they feel. I used to be someone who didn’t know what to say to a person whose loved one had died. I shudder to think of how often I might have said something inadvertently hurtful or remained silent because “they might be having a good day and I don’t want to ruin it for them.” I have news for people -- you can’t ruin our day. Mine was ruined the day my child died. When you say nothing, it makes us feel that our loved one’s life was insignificant. But this person was important to us. This person mattered. Here is my advice for what you can say: “I’m sorry about your loss.” Include the person’s name or their relationship if you can. Whatever your version of “I’m sorry,” be it in the form of a hug or in words, is perfect. That’s it. That’s enough. It doesn’t matter how the person died. However, if you have an anecdotal story about this person, please share it. We love to hear stories about our loved one. Send a text. If there is an online tribute to this person, sign it. Also, cards are wonderful. I don’t know what is the statute of limitations on expressing condolences, but we are still receiving cards months after the event, and they are still comforting. The family holds these things close. We are struggling to put our lives back together without this person in it. -- Sad Dear Sad: If you haven’t already done so, please contact The Compassionate Friends (compassionatefriends.org). Our deepest condolences on your heartbreaking loss. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. With so many advertising mediums dividing the attention of potential customers, newspapers remain the most effective source for reaching consumers. Why? Simply put, newspapers reach more people, more often. Highly portable and highly visible, newspaper ads go with people and stay with them. That means your business is more likely to be on their minds when they’re in the market for related products or services. When it comes to spending your advertising dollars, make the choice that’s tried and true: newspaper advertising works harder for you.

No stopping zone in place for Kootenay National Park It’s that time of year again when bears emerge from hibernation up in the mountains to look for food at lower elevations. While this may seem

like an opportune moment to catch a glimpse of bears, it can actually be more dangerous than you think. “I think a lot of people don’t necessarily understand that if a bear is roadside, it’s still a

wild animal,” said Jon Stuart-Smith, Human-Wildlife Conflict Specialist with Parks Canada. “People start to think that it’s more like a zoo situation and the animal doesn’t have the potential to hurt or injure them.” For this reason, Parks Canada is enforcing its annual temporary no stopping zone for an 11-kilometre stretch of Highway 93 South in the southern portion of Kootenay National Park. The restriction is en-

forced as a safety precaution to keep both motorists and the bears themselves safe so they feel undisturbed for the time being. When people disobey the restriction and, in many cases, stop to feed the animals, Mr. Stuart-Smith said the danger is only elevated. “That obviously becomes quite dangerous if bears become food-conditioned and are starting to approach vehicles starting to expect food,” he said.

“That is something we are really trying to avoid because in the end we might have to destroy bears that become that food-conditioned and become a threat to the safety of visitors.” Impacted areas will include areas between McKay Compound to Cobb Lake, which is the southern portion of Kootenay National Park above the hot springs, the Olive Lake day use site, and the brake check pullouts for both the northbound and

southbound lanes. Parks Canada would also like to remind people that feeding the wildlife in the area and disobeying legal closures not only puts themselves and the animals in danger, it is illegal. Parks Canada wildlife and law enforcement officers, with the assistance of the RCMP detachment, will routinely patrol the area to enforce the no stopping zone and will lay

The skate park at the Creston and District Community Complex will be permanently closed due to its condition and safety risks, the Regional District of Central Kootenay board decided at yesterday’s meeting. “The RDCK directors determined that spending significant money on temporary repairs at the old park wasn’t the best use of resources,” said Area A director Larry Binks, chair of the Creston Valley Services Committee, in a press release. “The plan is to prepare for a new and modern skate park by

getting the community engaged and prepared for funding and partnership opportunities.” The 15-year-old structure park was closed in October to allow for repairs to deteriorating concrete, and was expected to reopen this spring. The existing park will be demolished this year, but the RDCK has allocated funding in the 2016 budget to begin planning site selection, preliminary design and cost estimates for a new facility. RDCK staff is preparing a request for proposals for planning and design services, which will be requested in the next few months.
