The park is well lit, has picnic tables, a play structure, swings and an open playing area. Leiding Park - Vanderhoof Located on the east side of Victoria St. near Peach Lane, Leiding Park has an open, grassy play area and swing set. Vanderview Playground - Vanderhoof Located west of the Nechako Christian Fellowship Church on Vanderview Drive, the playground has an open play area and swing set. See Vanderhoof Visitor Centre for more kid friendly activities. Ferland Water Park - Vanderhoof Let the kids splash around at the water park or climb on the jungle gym at Ferland Park in Vanderhoof. Recreational Facilities & Parks Peterson’s Beach Provincial Site - Fraser Lake Peterson’s Beach Campsite can be accessed off of Highway 16, located on Stella Road North of Fraser Lake. A total of 44 unserviced campsites, pit toilets and boat launch. Camp site host is on site daily from 3pm to 10am the next morning, every day. Ormond Lake hiking trail can be accessed from Petersen Beach.Thousands of pine seedlings have been recently planted at the site to replace trees killed by the Mountain Pine Beetle. Veterans Memorial Splash Pad Water Park Fraser Lake A modern Water Park with a picnic area, play area, change rooms and sanitary facilities (handicap accessible) – located a block off Highway 16 next to Kin Park. Your children will thank you for stopping by. Beaumont Provincial Park - Fraser Lake Sleep amongst the trees at beautiful Beaumont Provincial Park. Located at the east end of Fraser Lake, this campground has 49 sites, a boat launch, day picnic area, swimming beach and sani-station. Paarens Beach Provincial Park - Fort St. James Get away from it all at Paarens Beach! The park features a 800-meter sandy beach for swimming (including a ropedoff area for the kids), a boat launch, camping and canoeing. There’s a large day use/picnic area on the beach with picnic tables, shelters and a playground. If you want to stay longer, there are 36 campsites with pit toilets and sani-stations. The park opens in May, once the snow and ice are gone, and remains open until September. User fees are charged during these months.

Winter Pastimes Many trails for snowshoeing
Snowshoeing Experience the magic of a winter forest on snowshoes! Snowshoeing has been around for thousands of years. And, obviously, the art of snowshoeing has become more sophisticated over time – now it’s considered a winter sport. There are endless trails to conquer throughout the Stuart-Nechako area, give it a try, great excercise and very refreshing. But, be careful. Don’t take risks and most importantly, have fun. Cross Country Skiing The trails throughout the area make this winter pasttime a must. Check at the information centre for a map of the lit, groomed trails just west of Vanderhoof at the Nechako Valley Sporting Association grounds on Redmond Pit Rd. Skating Rinks Spend the day ice-skating or perfecting your slap shot at the one of the many indoor or outdoor rinks to be found in Fort St. James, Fraser Lake and Vanderhoof. If you prefer to be a spectator, drop by the rink to watch local hockey teams compete. In the summer months the Vanderhoof arena plays host to many events. Snowmobiling/ATV Many trails in the area make excellent routes for snowmobiles and ATVs. Some trails are maintained by local clubs and feature routes for both the beginner and more experienced rider.

Winter Pastimes Dog Sledding on Stuart Lake
Dog Sledding Winter visitors looking for a unique way to experience Northern British Columbia can forge a path through the backcountry by dogsled. Whichever area of the region the dogs take you, you are sure to see beautiful, and never-before seen wilderness and terrain. A trip of a lifetime awaits all future dog-sledding enthusiasts. Murray Ridge Ski Hill Canadian ski legend Nancy Greene Raine designed this challenging ski hill. It has a reputation for great powder, sunny skies, and the longest T-bar in North America. Test your skiing and snowboarding skills on the 22 runs or explore 20 kilometres of cross-country trails. Murray Ridge is located 6 miles (10 km) north of Fort St. James, northwest of Prince George. The mountain has elevation of 6500 ft. Slush Cup Sunday at Murray Ridge Ski Area in March features events such as the Cassiar Cannonball, Bathtub Races and the Slush Cup splashdown, with lots of prizes. Summer Activities Self-guided Forestry Tours Explore the back country with a self-guided tour of the region’s lush forests. Grab a brochure from the information centre to navigate your way through the bush and scout out rest areas. These roads vary in condition so make sure you are well prepared. Self-guided tours are available for the Kluskus and Holy Cross Forest Service roads.
Swan Capital - Fraser Lake The area boasts of 170 lakes within a 50 mile radius and is the temporary home to over 1000 Trumpeter Swans, making it the Swan Capital of the world. Trumpeters are the largest waterfowl in North America and they are not bothered by the cold. They have up to 35,000 feathers and their downy layer is 2 inches thick. The wingspan of an adult Trumpeter can reach almost 2.5 meters.
Kenney Dam Kenney Dam - Vanderhoof Set a day aside to explore the Kenney Dam. The Kenney Dam (or Kemano 1) is a rock-filled hydroelectric dam on the Nechako River, 96km south of Vanderhoof, British Columbia, built in the early 50s. At 1,500 feet long and 317 feet high, it is still a spectacular sight. It took 4,016,900 cubic yards of material to build the dam. It is also a great spot for camping and fishing. To reach the dam, go south on the Holy Cross Forest Service road, which starts at Lejac (6 km east of Fraser Lake). Follow the road for 68 km and you will reach the dam.

Pictographs - Fort St. James More than a century ago, First Nations people used vermilion paint to create 21 pictographs on the north shore of Stuart Lake. These paintings illustrate images that were important to the Carrier people – fish, birds, guardian spirits, and images from dreams. They are located on the north shore of Stuart Lake, close to Honeymoon Island, and between Fort St. James and Binche Bay and are only accessible by water. Tchentlo Lake Hot Springs - Fort St. James The springs are approximately 125 km northwest of Fort St. James. These are not commercialized hot springs and consist of three pools with temperatures of 80-85 degrees Fahrenheit. The springs are only accessible by boat. Caution: Take care where you walk as the ground is very fragile.

Summer Activities Canoeing Canoe enthusiasts can enjoy the Stellako, Nechako and Stuart Rivers which are suitable for paddlers of any level of experience or any one of the hundreds of other lakes the Stuart/Nechako has to offer. Check out the information centre for details on water routes and remember to take weather conditions into account before setting out.

Golfing The Omineca Golf Course in Vanderhoof is a par 72, 18hole course. Enjoy a final round at the 19th Hole Restaurant located in the clubhouse. Stuart Lake Golf Course, located near Fort St. James, features nine holes with a spectacular view of Stuart Lake as well as a clubhouse for relaxation. Molyhills Golf Club in Fraser Lake is an 18-hole course with spectacular views of Francois Lake. All courses are open seasonally from April to September. Mountain Biking Jump on a bike and explore the 30 km of well kept trails at Waterlily Lake, located on Sturgeon Point Road north of Vanderhoof off Highway 16. Many different areas around the region offer well-kept trails suitable for mountain bike riding. Check with the local Chambers for directions. Fishing If it’s rainbow trout or kokanee you’re after, the StuartNechako region is sure to meet your needs. Stay for the day or a couple of weeks, as there are many lakes and rivers with forest recreation sites to make your visit easy and enjoyable. Remember to ensure your licence is valid before launching.

Summer Activities Fort St. James Farmer’s Market It will be the market’s 19th year of offering local produce, meat, eggs, crafts, furniture, baking, jams, jellies, tasty treats, bedding plants, and more for sale each week in their downtown location across from the Lakeshore Pharmacy and Canada Post Office. The market is open Friday’s from mid May to September in the Spirit Square 11:30-4:00pm. Summer Activities View from Glennanan Bridge
Stellako River - Fraser Lake Indulge in the beauty of the Stellako River, which connects Francois Lake to Fraser Lake. The Stellako is world famous for its “fly-fishing and challenging, expert class canoeing river. Expert class begins at the mouth of Francois Lake, 9 km to the waterfalls. Below the waterfalls, to Fraser Lake, is beginner class with lovely calm waters.
Salmon Run Experience a survival of the fittest challenge - fish style. In an impressive attempt to reach their spawning grounds, sockeye salmon struggle to reach their destination point despite the threat of bears looking for an easy catch. This natural wonder can be watched at Stellako River from the Glennanan Bridge every August.

Year Round Activities Nechako White Sturgeon Conservation Centre Vanderhoof The Nechako White Sturgeon Conservation Centre Hatchery is contributing to the recovery of the endangered population of Nechako white sturgeon in the Nechako River. All fish released from the hatchery facility are tagged with micro-chips so they can be individually identified and 30 have radio transmitters that can be tracked by boat, airplane or fixed stations. The Hatchery is open for public tours to learn more about the valuable research and recovery of the endangered species on Thursdays from 2 to 3pm. Groups can book for other occasions by emailing info@nechakowhitesturgeon.org
Bird Watching Tower at Riverside Park Bird Watching Bird watchers can view hundreds of species at the sanctuary along the Nechako River in Vanderhoof, where you will find a bird watching tower. Bring the binoculars, it’s the perfect perch for bird lovers to view migrating swans, geese, hawks and owls that frequent the Nechako River in late fall and early spring. Birding list is available at the Vanderhoof Visitor Centre. Bowling - Vanderhoof Great entertainment for the whole family! Check out the bowling alley in Vanderhoof and enjoy some five and ten pin bowling excitement. A smoke-free environment for all to enjoy. Wildlife Watching Enjoy the colourful scenery dotted with various woodland inhabitants. The Stuart/Nechako region is abundant with wildlife such as deer, moose, grizzly and black bear. But be careful, these are wild animals and should not be fed or approached. See the Vanderhoof Visitor Centre for an information booklet on the types of wildlife, plants and bugs you will see on the roads and trails that surround our area.
