news _____________________________________________________________________ A local fundraising effort is underway to pay for the cost to ship two 10-by-20-foot shipping containers packed with donations earmarked for Cuba. The containers have already been filled with baseball and sporting equipment, household items, baby clothing and thousands of shoes from Soles4Souls. The goal is to raise the $12,000 cost by May 1 in order to have the containers shipped to Cuba by June 1. Kinsley Hettinga said

her dad Rick started this initiative by taking duffle bags full of donations on his trips to Cuba and quickly saw the need for more. After spending countless months working with government officials and various communities, his efforts led to doors being opened that would allow the aid to go into Cuba. “For the last eight years, our family has been collecting and shipping sports equipment and household goods in

shipping containers across the ocean to Cuba,” Hettinga said. “The outpouring of donations across the country has been astounding.” On Oct. 31, 2015, Rick suffered a major aorta dissection and as a result suffered a stroke. After spending seven days in the cardiac ICU and further weeks in the hospital, he was finally able to come home, but the effects of the stroke have taken a huge financial toll, Hettinga said.

“Here is where we need help. The two containers have already been purchased and they are completely full of donations, but the cost of shipping the containers is still outstanding. Each container costs approximately $6,000 to ship from Canada to Cuba,” she said, “Cuba is a vibrant country full of beautiful people and incredible culture. However, upon further examination it is easy to see that this communist country, although attending to

BCHL champs head east on playoff road Warren Henderson Playing hockey in May is a brand new concept to the vast majority of the West Kelowna Warriors, player and coaches alike. But the B.C. Hockey League champions are gratefully accepting that reality this week as they head east to Estevan, SK for the Western Canada Cup. The five-team tournament is a qualifier for the RBC Cup national Junior A championship set for Lloydminster, AB, May 14 to 21. Already 24 games and counting into the postseason, Warriors’ head coach and GM Rylan Ferster has absolutely no objections with what has already been the longest season in team history. “It’s funny, it doesn’t feel like we’re about to turn the corner into May, it just feels like business as usual for us,” Ferster said. “To think the (playoffs) have been going on for nearly two months, it’s really nice to still be around, that’s for sure. I’d take it every year if I could, it feels great to be in the position we’re in.” Representing the BCHL,

The West Kelowna Warriors celebrate the team’s first ever B.C. Hockey League championship Saturday night at Royal LePage Place. the Warriors will take on the host Estevan Bruins in the opening game of the tournament on Saturday night. The fiveteam round-robin will also feature the Portage Terriers (Manitoba), Melfort Mustangs (Saskatchewan) and Brooks Bandits (Alberta). The top two teams after the playoff round will move on the to RBC Cup. Because the Warriors haven’t played any of the other four teams, there’s no way to know exactly how the B.C. champs will stack up against their

prairie opponents. Still, based on the strength of the BCHL from year to year, owner Mark Cheyne said his club should be in the mix. “Our league is so hard to win, we beat some really good players and teams on the way, and I think we came out of the toughest division (Interior),” said Cheyne, who took over the Warriors nine years ago. “I think we go in a pretty good spot…I wouldn’t say we’re the favourites but I think we’re feeling pretty good about our

chances. “But you never know in these kinds of tournaments,” he added. “You’ve got to get some breaks, you’ve gotta stay healthy and you’ve gotta score on the power play. The guys are excited.” The Warriors raised the bar to a new standard on Saturday night at Royal LePage Place, capturing the organization’s first BCHL title in the 10 seasons since putting down stakes in West Kelowna. In front of a sold-out crowd, the Warriors downed the

Chilliwack Chiefs 4-2 to take the Fred Page Cup in six games. “First and foremost, it’s about Mark Cheyne, he’s been around a long time, he’s a great owner and a great person and he deserves it more than anyone,” Ferster said. “The community has been very good to us, so it was certainly nice to be able to reward them. And it obviously it’s great for the kids. They worked hard to get here, you don’t get to this point without a great work ethic. I can’t say enough

about our leadership group too, the older guys who have led us all the way. It’s great for them.” One of those leaders, captain Kyle Marino, can’t wait for next leg of the Warriors’ journey. “Our goal right from the start of the year was we wanted to go all the way to the RBC Cup,” said Marino. “There’s still a lot of work to do and we know it’s going to be a battle, but we’re looking forward to it. We’ve accomplished a lot already, but we don’t feel like we’re done yet.” The long playoff road has brought the inevitability of injuries to the Warriors, who finished the BCHL final without goaltender Matthew Greenfield, defenceman Kristian Blumenschein and forward Quin Foreman. Ferster said there’s a good chance all three could play in Estevan. After Saturday’s opener with Estevan, the Warriors will take on Brooks on Sunday, Portage on Tuesday and Melfort next Thursday. The Olympic trials in 2013 and the Brier in 2014 both ended in heartbreaking finishes for John Morris, Jim Cotter and their Okanagan team. Now, after two seasons apart, Morris, Cotter, Tyrel Griffith and Rick Sawatsky are back together to take another run at curling’s biggest prizes. With third Ryan Kuhn deciding to step away from the team this spring, that paved the way for Morris to rejoin B.C’s top team of the past five years. “There were a lot of great curlers and great people who were asking what we were planning

to do, and when we found out John was interested, it just seemed like the best fit,” said Griffith, who plays second on the Vernon/ Kelowna foursome. “It made sense in so many ways, we went through a lot together before and we all want to get back to where we were and take another run at the ultimate goal in the sport.” The ultimate prize, of course, is the 2018 Olympic Games in South Korea. Team Morris, as it will be known once again, came agonizingly close to earning a trip to the 2014 Olympics in Vancouver, but lost the trials final in Winnipeg to Brad Jacobs. Five months later,

$

Morris, Cotter and company were on the doorstep again at the Brier in Kamloops, but came up short in the decisive game against Kevin Koe. Griffiths said both the experience gained and disappointment endured by the Vernon/Kelowna team in one season can only benefit them in the future. “That season (201314), it was a new team and it took us a while to come together,” Griffith said. “But we just kept getting better and better. We played amazing at the Brier, we just had one game that we didn’t bring our best. “Having gone through this before, I think what we learned and know

John Morris, Jim Cotter, Tyrel Griffith and Rick Sawatsky reunite for 2016-2017 season now is huge. We’ll have an extra year together, so I think that’ll be a big advantage for us.” In addition to their curling abilities, Griffith expects the various personalities to mix well

together. “Jimmy, Rick and I are pretty easygoing guys and we get along well with John,” said Griffith. “He’ll bring a real fire to our rink and I think the guys are excited to get going. We

know what our dreams and goals are and we’re motivated by that.” Although nothing is yet etched in stone, Griffith said the Vernon/ Kelowna team is likely use the same arrangement as their previous tour together, with Morris skipping and throwing third stones, while Cotter would throw last. As for Kuhn’s twoyear stint with the Cotter team, Griffith said the Vernon curler will be missed. “Ryan’s a great teammate and great person,” Griffith said. “He has a young family and a busy job and the level of commitment was hard for him. We had two great seasons with him.”

WHL ROCKETS

Captain returns for Game 4 Rodney Southam will be back on the ice tonight with his Kelowna Rockets teammates. After serving a twogame suspension, the team’s captain will suit up for Game 4 of the WHL’s Western Conference final against the Seattle Thunderbirds in Kent, Wash. Southam was disciplined for a charging major and game misconduct, as the result of a hit on Seattle’s Cavin Leth in Game 1 of the series Friday night at Prospera Place. Leth was helped off the ice and didn’t play in Game 2. Southam, 19, who was named the Rockets’ captain in January, has four goals and six points in 15 postseason games. Game 3 was played last night at the ShoWare Center in Kent, however a final score wasn’t available at Capital News press time. For details on the game, go online to kelownacapnews.com/ sports/ The Thunderbirds won the first two games of the best-of-seven series at Prospera Place, 2-1 on Friday and 3-2 on Saturday, with Scott Eansor netting the winner both nights. Game 5 is set for Friday night in Kelowna. A sixth game, if necessary, would be played Sunday in Washington.

APRIL 2016 The South East Kelowna Irrigation District (SEKID) would like to announce that they have successfully been awarded an Okanagan Basin Water Board (OBWB) grant in the amount of $28,000 to complete a project on testing for viruses in groundwater, using genetic testing, a new innovative approach. Along with the testing, a virus sampling program will be developed that can be used as a template for other communities in the Okanagan that wish to assess their risk regarding viral pathogens in groundwater.

First-time buyers shouldn’t feel shut out By Gordon Hamilton Despite headline-grabbing stories about million-dollar houses pushing home ownership out of reach in Canada’s large cities, there’s still plenty of opportunity for first-time buyers in certain segments of the Canadian real estate market, says Dominion Lending Centres Chief Economist Sherry Cooper. Single-family home prices have been surging in cities like Toronto and Vancouver, but that’s driven largely by a shortage of land: You practically need to knock down an older home in order to build a new one. It’s the supply-demand story, Cooper says. Land for single-family homes is in short supply while demand

Sherry Cooper, chief economist for Dominion Lending Centres is strong, driving double-digit price increases. But that’s not the case in the condo market, where

prices have not been escalating as quickly. Condos, and housing in those parts of Canada

CONTRIBUTED

where the land supply is not an issue, are still an affordable option. “There are differences

in the housing market depending on the sector and the region,” she said. “For example, condo prices in Toronto are rising at single-digit rates. “Part of that is because there has been a dramatic increase in construction, so that the supply of condos is increasing very sharply.” At the same time, retiring boomers are often helping their children buy homes. Aid from mom and dad coupled with the increase in supply, has resulted in the rate of home ownership rising. “We are in a sweet spot in demand for housing right now because in Canada, the growth in the number of first-time buyers— roughly aged 25 to 35—is at a relatively high level.

“It’s stronger than what we have seen since the baby boomers came of age. “First-time homeowners are still out there buying and in fact they represent roughly 30 per cent of new home sales, even in Toronto and Vancouver. “What’s different is that it now takes two incomes to buy a home rather than one, as it was way back when, and also your first home may well be a condo and it may well be far from the city centre and it may well be quite small.” But the reality is that low interest rates have helped to make housing more affordable, she adds. “But once you get in the door, there’s the whole notion that house prices will rise and you will have

greater equity to move up next time around,” she said. These differences between single-family housing markets and multi-family housing markets need to be recognized by governments in their attempts to make housing more affordable, Cooper says. Housing and construction are key strengths in the Canadian economy right now, and government intervention—like the B.C. government’s move to increase the property tax for expensive homes—needs to be carefully weighed. “You don’t want to dampen what has been a very significant component of economic growth.”

Tougher penalties in real estate reforms By Jeff Nagel B.C. Real Estate superintendent Carolyn Rogers has signaled she will recommend wide-ranging reforms of the real estate industry, including much tougher penalties to punish and deter realtors who are found to have engaged in predatory practices. Her comments are contained in an interim report of an advisory group she was appointed to chair in the wake of relevations of misconduct by realtors in the overheated Vancouver-area real estate market. The main example has been the practice of undisclosed shadow-flipping, where the home is resold to other, different buyers than the original one prior to closing—unbeknownst to the seller—

cannot be tolerated,” allowing intermediaries Rogers said. to extract profits and Her report indicates the realtors to collect more Real Estate Council of commissions, while B.C. should get more enultimately driving up forcement tools to reguprices. late realtors, and that all Rogers noted realtors contract assignments be are expected to solely reported directly to the defend their client’s best council. interests at all times and She said penalties for suggested the current Carolyn Rogers unethical behaviour ability of realtors to must be increased signifirepresent both sides of a cantly—potentially with additional transaction creates risk that advantage commissions and profits confiscated— may be taken of some consumers. and those penalties must apply to more “Abusing otherwise legal practices types of infractions. such as assigning contracts or acting Premier Christy Clark had previously in any way that fails to clearly disclose promised the province will deliver the interests of a licensee or puts those reforms to take the profit out of shady interests ahead of a client’s interests,

practices. Rogers also flags “blurred lines” between the Real Estate Council of B.C. and industry realtor associations, which have taken on quasi-regulatory functions. “We are concerned that the trade associations have assumed the role of triaging consumer complaints and are doing so with no requirement for public transparency or reporting to the council,” she said. “We believe this must be cleared up.” Also of concern, the report says, is that real estate licensees have reported misconduct to the media but not to official channels, apparently out of concern for repercussions. B.C. Finance Minister Mike de Jong said he believes Rogers’ probe is on the right

track and he’s particularly concerned about her findings of blurred lines between the regulating council and real estate industry associations. “Is the regulatory structure itself equipped to properly protect the public interest?” de Jong asked. “It needs to be clear to consumers and clients who has primary responsibility for that.” He also acknowledged “the influence this red hot market is having on the industry.” Real Estate Council of B.C. chair Marylou Leslie said the council fully supports the advisory group’s work. Rogers’ advisory group is aiming to deliver a final report and recommendations in early June.
