The second annual Kootenay Kids Fondo, held Sunday, May 29, saw participation more than double from last year. The event, put on by the Sunrise Rotary Club and the East Kootenay Credit Union, featured three course routes of 8 km, 16.6 km and 20.2 km. Idlewild Park has been undergoing some changes — not by choice — as the city has been managing the situation around the structural issues of the dam. City staff is tendering the rehabilitation of the dam and spillway by July, with work to start in August. Currently, Idlewild Lake has been drawn down to relieve pressure on the dam, however, once construction is complete, the lake will be restored to it’s former level.

Family marks sixth anniversary of MacFarlane-Taylor murders

The City of Cranbrook is in the process of relocating Idlewild Lake’s population of Western Painted Turtles.
It has been six years since Leanne MacFarlane and Jeffrey Taylor were killed in a house just outside Cranbrook, in what police said was a case of mistaken identity. MacFarlane, 43, and Taylor, 42, had been living in the house beside the Highway 3/93 rest stop in Rampart, near Mayook, for three months on May 29, 2010. That morning, the couple were shot in their home. MacFarlane died at the scene; Taylor died of his injuries later that day. Police quickly determined it was a case of mistaken identity. Though no arrests have ever been made, it is still very much an active case. “The investigation is still ongoing, and still at the forefront,” said Cpl. Jason Smart with the

Meanwhile, the family is still waiting waiting for justice, and remembering.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: Have you seen it in Cranbrook yet? You know, during the Sam Steele Days parade, when there is a bit of a lag between a float and a band because two dozen men are (valiantly?) hobbling their way along the streets wearing the toe-pinch-iest, heel-wobbliest red shoes you can think of? Well, this is Year Five and, so far, 31 men have signed up to compete for the glory of helping keep the doors of the Cranbrook Women’s Resource Centre open — the most. “Whoever brings in the most pledges stands to win an incredible trophy of, you guessed it, a red high heeled shoe— complete with bragging rights, of course,” said Trina Ayling, this year’s walk coordinator. Ayling and a small team of volunteers have been busy pitching local businesses to join in the fun by walking as teams. So far, Hyundi, KIA, East Kootenay Community Credit Union, Mount Baker Senior Secondary, New Dawn Developments and Arby’s have committed to the cause. “Teams are wonderful,” said Ayling. “But let

California, and has spread to many communities across North America. Proceeds from every walk must go to a community organization that works to reduce violence against women. The Cranbrook Women’s Resource Centre, under the auspices of Community Connections of Southeast BC, is just such an organization. “The women who visit the Women’s Resource Centre are dealing with many difficult issues such as extreme poverty, illness, addictions, family violence, homelessness, unemployment and legal is-
sues,” said Gould. “On average, 300 women a month access the services, either over the phone or in person. There is no cost to the women for any of the services.” There is still ample time to register to walk and collect pledges. ‘Deep dissatisfacton’ School District 5 board reacts to comments by Education Minister For the Townsman
The School District 5 (SD5) Board of Education recently shared their ‘deep dissatisfaction’ regarding comments made by Education Minister Mike Bernier on the February 23, 2016 edition of CBC Radio’s Early Edition. During the interview, Early Edition Host, Rick Cluff asked Bernier why he thought so many people are unhappy about education funding, to which the Minister responded: “We constantly hear from a few groups that it’s [education] underfunded and unfortunately when you hear that noise coming from a few groups all the time that’s what people start to believe”. According to Board Chair, Frank Lento, the SD5 Board of Education was not aware of the interview until the Board’s April Advocacy Committee meeting where they reviewed a copy of a letter sent to the Minister by School District 69 (SD69) Qualicum, expressing concern with the
Minister’s comment. Lento says Trustees listened to the interview and were stunned by the Minister’s characterization of the concern over public education funding as ‘noise’ from a few groups’ given there are over one million students and parents and more than 400 School Board Trustees who — as elected officials — represent all constituents province-wide. “There’s definitely noise”, says Lento, “but I wouldn’t describe the majority of the Province as ‘a few groups.’” The Board’s ‘deep dissatisfaction’ was not limited to the one comment. In a May 11 letter written to the Minister by the Board, Trustees state that they took exception to a number of assertions made by Bernier during his interview, saying that government continues to ignore ‘the most basic’ of financial realities for Boards of Education. “According to Government’s own documents and projections, education funding is decreasing
both as a percentage of the provincial budget and as a percentage of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In GDP terms, this will equal a reduction in government spending on education of $850 million over the next three years,” said Lento. “As for the “new money” of $110 million this year, this is simply money which government committed to during teacher contract negotiations along with the perstudent funding of nearly 7,000 new students province-wide.” Government’s assertion that Districts need less money because of declining enrolment was also a point of contention for the Board. “A decline in enrolment doesn’t necessarily cost a District less in teachers’ salary, bussing, or other fixed costs,” said Lento. “The only absolute between funding and enrolment is the automatic budget reduction for a District of $7,166 for every student by which the District’s enrolment numbers decline.”
“It never goes away,” said Leanne and Jeffrey’s son Jordan MacFarlane ‚ one of the couple’s three children. “The time seems to have passed so quickly — it almost seems like yesterday. But we have to keep living our lives.” Six years ago, Jordan had just moved back to Cranbrook, and was in fact living with Leanne and Jeffrey in the house at Rampart. It appears the killing took place only a short while after Jordan had left for work. He said the phone call he got from the police is still very fresh in his mind. Jordan said that while the whole family is still waiting for justice to be done, he appreciates the support the family has had from the community over the years since. “It definitely affected more than just the family,” Jordan said. “People are still talking about it, so that’s good.” At the time of the double homicide, RCMP said the home that MacFarlane
and Taylor were renting had until recently been lived in by one of the men charged in connection with a shooting outside the Sam Steele Hotel in October 2009. Three Cranbrook men were found guilty in a conspiracy to commit murder trial in April 2013 in a gang-related crime connected to the Mayook homicide, but that trial was separate to the homicide investigation, RCMP said. Idlewild rehab set to proceed this summer Continued from page 1
But when the dam is rebuilt, the overall project won’t be over. In addition to the structural work of the dam, the city is also looking at the entire park and will be developing a mast plan in collaboration with public feedback. That will kick off with a workshop on Tuesday, June 7, at 6 p.m. at the viewing room in the Memorial Arena, where the public is encouraged to come share their vision of the park. “Certainly Idlewild has always been a very special park for residents,” said Chris New, the Director of Leisure Services. “Anytime we’ve had city-wide master plan processes, Idlewild Park is always the number one park as far as the amount of use. It’s quite unique in our park system, having picnic areas and a lake to walk around, trails and fishing and a natural setting. It’s just quite
a special place. “Council recognizes that and we want to respond to our residents and enhance that facility and now that we have some funding in place, we’re going through that exercise.” The City is also in the process of relocating the lake’s population of Western Painted Turtles to a new permanent location where a sample population was successfully relocated in 2015. Permits will also be in place to salvage the existing fish population and relocate it as required by the Ministry of Environment and the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans. During the construction, there will be ongoing environmental, wildlife and water quality monitoring both within the reservoir and in Joseph Creek. The park is definitely considered a key amenity for the city; over 17 hectares of land near
the southeast boundary of Cranbrook includes a lake, which serves as habitat for the endangered Western Painted Turtle and migratory birds. There are trails, a playground, picnic tables and fire pits, an amphitheatre and the lake and adjacent hill also serves as a popular skating and sledding area in the winter. New said the city has already received some feedback from residents in the form of a survey that circulated last year with over 1,000 responses. “Last year, we did some preliminary work with residents through an Idlewild Park community survey, and we had over 1,000 responses to that,” said New. “So that just spoke to how important that park is to our residents and in the surrounding area. “What the Idlewild Park Master Plan will do is take some of that past information that we’ve collected, it will

The Rocky Mountain Trench Ecosystem Restoration Program has been operating as a successful partnership with government, industry, First Nations, non-governmental organizations and members of the public since 1998. The program’s longterm goal is to restore East Kootenay/Columbia Valley low-elevation grasslands and dry Pon-
derosa pine/Douglas-fir forests to their natural state. Restoration is taking place from Radium Hot Springs to the U.S. border. “Congratulations to Dan Murphy and his volunteer board of directors,” said Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. “Our region has led B.C. for many years in the restoration of natural grasslands. I know the Trench Society will make good use of these funds.” Each year the province’s ecosystem restoration program treats approximately 2,000 hectares mechanically and applies prescribed fire to another 2,000 hectares in their resto-
ration efforts. Restoration work can vary from year to year. In the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District last year, 575 hectares were treated mechanically and prescribed fires were completed on 1,025 hectares. Restored ecosystems help to improve an area’s resiliency to climate change, at the same time reducing wildfire risks to communities. Restoration programs improve habitat for grassland dependent species – including many species at risk, increase natural forage for wildlife and livestock, protect drinking water sources and enhance overall forest health.

Kimberley Cenotaph fundraising underway C AROLYN GR ANT
Kimberley City Council has committed the land where Bavarian Esso stood to a new Veterans Memorial Park, complete with a new location for the cenotaph. This week, Council approved the erection of a sign announcing the project, to raise awareness and help with fundraising. The project originates with the veterans’ support group Military Ames, and group facilitator Cindy Postnikoff says a federal grant for $25,000 has been written. “The grant has been applied for and all indications are we will get it,” she said. “The city will match that number.” However, the project will need more than $50,000 to complete and Postnikoff is beginning local fundraising. “We are seeing local interest in purchasing memorial benches.

This citizen-science initiative encourages residents to count bats at local roost sites. “Bat counts are a wonderful way for residents to get involved in collecting important scientific information” says Leigh Anne Isaac, Coordinator for the KCBP. “No special skills are needed, kids can be involved, and you can relax in a deck chair while counting.” This year the annual BC Bat Count will help the BC Ministry of Environment (MoE) collect baseline data on bat populations before the devastating White Nose Syndrome fungal disease affects bats in the province. “White Nose Syndrome is estimated to have killed more than six million bats since it was first discovered in eastern North America a decade ago,” says Dr. Purnima Govindarajulu, MoE biologist. “In March 2016, the disease was detected just east of Seattle.
This has greatly increased our urgency to understand bat populations in BC. We need the public’s help to census local bat populations. The summer of 2016 may be our last year to obtain population estimates before White Nose Syndrome causes
widespread declines in western North America.” Volunteers wait outside a known roost site, such as a bat-house, barn, bridge or attic, and count bats as they fly out at twilight. They record the final number along with basic information on weather conditions.
Ideally, 1-2 counts are done between June 1 and 21 before pups are born, and 1-2 more between July 21 and August 15 when pups are flying. “We know relatively little about bats in [your region] including basic information on popula-
tion numbers” says Isaac. “This information will be extremely valuable, particularly if it is collected annually. If people want to get involved but don’t have a roost site on their property, we will try to match them with a roost site nearby.”

Two gentlemen, not from Verona All characters in this column are fictitious; if anyone sounds familiar or has the same characteristics, it is purely coincidental. “Comedy has to be based on the truth. You take the truth and you put a little curlicue at the end.” Sid Caesar.
T
here are these two old guys that are seen together around town. They seem to emerge from some sort of hibernation once a week and go looking for a restaurant. This is probably when they meet and feed. Nobody knows when they feed or what they devour during the other days. They’re both old, probably in their late eighties and one walks with a stick — the other ought to; he has some awful limps. They appear at their chosen restaurant like wraiths. One restaurateur claims that they appear like Shakespeare’s witches: ‘What are these so wither’d and so wild in their attire that look not like inhabitants of the earth but are on’t.’ I think he overdid the quote, but some folk do show off. These two ancient gentlemen — it is assumed that they are gentlemen because they do not act in unseemly manners nor do they wear their hats whilst dining — dress (or are dressed) comfortably although one is in-
clined to be slightly more sartorial than the other and, generally, what is left of their hair is tastefully combed. Wherever it is they chose to dine on their weekly jaunts, these wizened gaffers are inclined to seem a little harsh to young waitresses who twitter solicitously about them. Oh, they are not rude or insulting; it seems that they find that young people talk too fast and therefore unintelligibly for the oldsters such as they. One or other of the geezers will invariably raise one palsied hand and announce, “Stop. We are not deaf; we are merely old; it is just that our hearing is slow, so please talk more slowly, Thank you.” This is generally stated in a bit of a foreign accent, probably British in origin. Peter However, those more expert I assure me that the Warland than accents are not the same and this thus destroys the theory that the two might be twins or even brothers. Before I began to write this epic I decided that I should not mention what the two old men are called. However, I did once decide the give them alternative names but then discovered that the two of them share the same first name, and this confused me and, probably, them too. It is unlikely that they might be brothers, even with very confused parents. As I said previously, these two usually act

in a gentlemanly manner and still get good service. One of the two sometimes asks his waitress to burp him at the end of a meal and does often get a hearty thump before he and his partner totter off to settle the bill which, it seems, they pay alternately with decent tips plus a certain amount of wry humour. When this less-than-dynamic duo is approached by people who appear to recognize one or other of the sages, the oldies frequently fail to recognize those that timorously approach, even in a friendly, unthreatening manner. This is probably due to loss of memory not an outright snub. However, should a person in his right mind wish to obtain the attention of these dithery old farts, he or she needs only to mention ‘fries’. This duo invariably tucks into French fries (one of them demanding ketchup the other eschewing it vehemently) and something else for their weekly repast. Like young children, they don’t always eat all of their vegetables. When asked if he was so and so, a retired doctor or barber, one of them assured the questioner, “Just address me as sir. Everyone does; even my kids and grand-children do.” So that settled that problem. If any hopeful is expecting to gain anything at all from some of the vast amount of wisdom and experience from the more than one hundred and seventy years of accumulated knowledge of this pair of Solomons, he or she can forget it.

Why are Islamists still attacking
B
ecause most people think of Islamic State, al-Qaeda and their ilk as being crazies motivated solely by hatred, they are not puzzled by recent terrorist attacks on the West like those in Paris, Brussels and Los Angeles. Like the villains in comic books, the terrorists are simply evil, and no further explanation is needed. But in the real world, being violent and fanatical does not make you stupid. The small group of Arab Islamists who started fighting the American invasion of Iraq in 2003 were by 2014 the rulers of a new country of some five million people that they call Islamic State, which suggests that they are clever people who pursue rational strategies. And yet they go on backing terrorist attacks in the West, which no longer seems like a rational strategy. It was a perfectly sensible strategy once. By the year 2000 the Islamist revolutionaries of the Arab world were close to despair. They had been trying to overthrow the dictators and kings who ruled the Arab countries for a quarter-century, and there was blood all over the walls — around 300,000 Arabs were killed in the struggles between the Islamists and the regimes in 1975-2000 — but they had not managed to overthrow a single regime. Their main strategy was always terrorism, simply because they lacked the resources for anything more ambitious. In theory their terrorist attacks should have driven the regimes into extreme repression, which (again in theory) should have alienated the population and driven them into the arms of the revolutionaries. Then the people, led by the Islamists and united in their wrath, would rise up and drive the oppressors from power. The Islamists had a few early successes — the seizure of the Grand Mosque in Mecca in 1979, the assassination of Egyp-
tian president Anwar Sadat in 1981 — but their strategy did not work. The Arab regimes did indeed become more oppressive, but the revolutionaries did not get mass support. Their doctrines were too weird, and their behaviour too extreme. So by the late 1990s the Islamists were looking for a different strategy. It was Osama bin Laden, the founder of Al-Qaeda, who came up with a new strategy: attack the West. Gwynne The ultimate goal was still to come to power in the Dyer Arab world, but rather than revolution in the streets the Islamists would now win power by leading a successful guerilla resistance movement against an invasion by infidel foreigners. Bin Laden had hit on this strategy because he had fought in Afghanistan as a volunteer, and that was exactly how the game played out there. The Russians invaded in 1979; Islamist extremists took over the resistance movement; after a long and bloody war the Russians went home in 1989; and the Afghan Islamists (the Taliban) then took power because they were the heroes who had driven the infidel foreigners out. To relive this triumph required getting some other infidel army to invade a Muslim country, and the obvious choice was the United States. Al-Qaeda’s 9/11 attacks in New York and Washington in 2001 gave Americans the necessary motivation, and two US invasions followed in rapid succession, in Afghanistan and Iraq. The mass-casualty terrorist attacks against Western targets continued for a long time (Madrid, Bali, London, etc.), presumably in order to give Western countries a reason to keep their troops in the Middle East. But the attacks gradually diminished as Al-Qaeda’s fighters in Iraq came closer to their goal of creating their own state: that would clearly be easier to do if most of
the Western troops had already gone home. The creation of Islamic State and the proclamation of the “Caliphate” in 2014 was the culmination of this long struggle, and it should have ended Islamist terror attacks on the West. Now they have a real state, they are seeking to expand in Syria and Iraq by military force, and the last thing they need is Western troops around to make matters more difficult. So why didn’t the attacks on Western countries stop? The only plausible explanation is the great split in the Islamist movement in 2014, when Islamic State broke away from Al-Qaeda. Since then there has been a ferocious competition between them both for recruits, and for the loyalty of Islamist organisations across the Muslim world. (The main Islamist organisations in both Egypt and Nigeria have switched their allegiance from Al-Qaeda to Islamic State in the past two years). In this competition, the best and cheapest way of showing that your organisation is tougher, more dedicated, more efficient than the other lot is to kill Westerners in spectacular terrorist attacks. So, for example, Al-Qaeda sponsored the “Charlie Hebdo” attack in Paris in February, 2015, and Islamic State replied with the much bigger attack in Paris last November. There is no strategic cost in these attacks, since Western and Russian forces are already bombing both Islamic State and Al-Qaeda’s local franchise in Syria, the Nusra Front. The material cost of the attacks is negligible: neither organisation is devoting even one percent of its resources to them. So they will continue for a while, and the West will just have to deal with them as they occur. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist published in 45 countries.
‘Climate action’ charade continues
T
he moving deadline for B.C.’s latest bold plan to control Earth’s weather with taxes has slid from March into
June. Now that Premier Christy Clark has jetted back from her latest liquefied natural gas sales trip to Korea and Japan, brace yourself for the big reveal of Climate Action 2.0, as the second stage of B.C.’s strategy has been termed. The pending LNG industry is just one problem for this reality-challenged scheme to maintain B.C.’s self-declared global climate leadership. Clark’s “Climate Leadership Team,” a mix of industry, academic, environmental and aboriginal representatives, was appointed a year ago to make recommendations for the next step. It concluded that B.C. isn’t going to reach its 2020 emissions reduction target, even if the government implements the team’s recommendation to resume steep increases in the carbon tax starting in 2018. B.C.’s carbon tax and its questionable “carbon neutral government” program have not reduced the province’s greenhouse gas emissions in recent years. They’re going up, and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why. Tacking seven cents onto the price of a

litre of gasoline may have had an effect at a time when fuel prices were high. That and a global recession actually did reduce B.C.’s greenhouse gas emissions for a while. Then Saudi Arabia decided to depress the world price of oil, cancelling any carbon tax effect for people driving up to the pumps in B.C. and stimulating fuel demand around the world. Now our population and economic growth are rising again, along with carbon emisBC VIEWS sions. And LNG production and export can only add to that Tom increase. Fletcher The urgency to create Climate Action 2.0 was so Clark could join Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on a triumphant visit to Paris last winter to work out the latest international climate deal. Trudeau then started to let his own urgent climate crisis deadline slip back. This routine has been going on since Jean Chretién signed Canada up for its first fantasy target in Kyoto, Japan almost 20 years ago. And the prospects for Paris don’t look much different. Don’t take my word for it. Nicholas Rivers, Canada Research Chair in Climate and Energy Policy at the University of Ottawa, wrote last week of the Paris deal: “These targets essentially require that developed countries such as Canada completely elim-
inate greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 or shortly after.” “Completely eliminate.” Not only does that mean an end to the oil and gas industry, it means no more air travel, unless somebody comes up with a battery-powered airliner pretty soon. Note that Rivers is describing the actions expected of developed countries. China has agreed that its steeply rising greenhouse gases will level off “around 2030,” according to the pathetically one-sided deal negotiated by U.S. President Barack Obama in 2014. Trudeau has decided that provinces must find their own path to a carbon-free Utopia. Alberta has moved ahead with its own carbon tax, loaded onto the energy industry in the midst of a collapse. Its main effect will likely be to send the Alberta NDP back to the opposition benches. Ontario is considering a ban on coal for power and natural gas for home heating, plus huge subsidies for electric cars. This should continue the upward spiral of electricity prices in that hapless, mismanaged province, which has already seen runaway subsidies to wind power and cancellation of gas-fired power plants. Cranbrook asks for public input on Idlewild Park F o r t h e To w n s m a n
The City of Cranbrook invites the community to participate in the creation of a new Master Plan for Idlewild Park. The City was successful in receiving funding for dam and park improvements and is inviting public input to prepare a plan. Last spring over 1,000 Cranbrook residents enthusiastically participated in the Idlewild Park Community Survey identifying how the park is used, and priorities for improvements. The Master Plan team is building on that valuable input as part of the Idlewild Master Plan process. Anyone who missed out on the survey, has new ideas, or wants to

The Kootenay Fun 5, a family appropriate 5 km walk/run, took place on Saturday, May 14. With enormous community support the event had well over 500 registered participants with dozens of little ones toddling, riding or piggy-backing. The run started and finished at Kootenay Christian Academy (1200 Kootenay St N.) and followed a level out-and-back course toward Isadore Canyon. A wonderful day was had by all – the sun was shining with families and friends enjoying a morning together all while getting some exercise. Even Shivers and Sparky the Fire Dog came out and challenged KCA’s own Lion to a 20 metre dash! The entire event was organized by a group of staff and parents from Kootenay Christian Academy as a fundraiser for pro-

Property Tax Notices for the City of Cranbrook have now been mailed to all property owners on record. If you have not received your notice by the end of May, please contact City Hall at (250)-426-4211 so that a copy may be forwarded to you. Taxes are due on July 4, 2016, after which time a 10% penalty will be added to any unpaid current taxes. Home Owner Grants may be claimed even if current taxes are not paid in full. Penalties apply to Home Owner Grants not claimed by July 4, 2016. If you are participating in the pre-authorized payment program, please note that the prepayment amount on your tax notice includes the May 15th and June 15th payments. As your prepayment amounts were based on an estimate there may still be a balance owing. To avoid a penalty, please review your Tax Notice carefully and make sure you pay any outstanding balance prior to July 4, 2016. To help you avoid the last minute rush, we accept postdated cheques. We also accept Interac Debit Card payments. Payment may also be made by telephone/online banking and through most financial institutions. You must still claim the Home Owner Grant at City Hall or online via the link on the www.cranbrook.ca website.

PREPAYMENT OF 2017 PROPERTY TAXES The City of Cranbrook is continuing to offer a property tax prepayment plan. Now you can budget your property taxes and avoid the July property tax “blues”. Monthly tax payments are made through your bank by preauthorized debits on the 15th of each month, starting in July 2016 for the 2017 taxation year. Application forms are available from the City Hall Tax Department. If you would like one mailed, please contact us at (250)-426-4211. If you are currently enrolled in the pre-authorized tax payment program, any overpayment on the 2016 property taxes will be applied to the first payment(s) for 2017.

2016 HOME OWNER GRANT
You may defer payment of property taxes if you meet the following basic qualifications: Canadian citizen or landed immigrant having lived in British Columbia for at least one year; and registered owner of the property, and the property is your principal residence Specific Program eligibility requirements: Regular Deferment Program 55 years or older, or widow/widower, or a person with a disability as defined by Regulation; and 25% equity position in your home (based on the 2016 BC Assessment property value) Families with Children Deferment Program Sign a declaration that you are financially supporting a child under the age of 18 at any time during the calendar year; and 15% equity position in your home (based on the 2016 BC Assessment property value) NOTE: Before applying for any of these tax deferment programs, you must pay all penalties, interest, previous years’ property taxes, and utility charges, as these charges cannot be deferred. The London Knights are 2016 MasterCard Memorial Cup champions. After claiming the Ontario Hockey League title, the Knights went undefeated at the Canadian Hockey League championship in Red Deer, staking out the second Memorial Cup crown in franchise history, edging the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League by a 3-2 overtime final Sunday afternoon at the Enmax Centrium. Matthew Tkachuk, a top-rated prospect heading into the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, scored the championship-clinching marker 7:49 into overtime, sending a quick shot past the shoulder of Huskies goaltender Chase Marchand to bring an end to the 2016 Canadian Hockey League season. “I was coming down with speed and J-Mo (Aiden Jamieson) hit me wide and I was able to toe-drag shoot it,” Tkachuk said Sunday. “A split second later I look up, everyone is going wild and I fall over. Ice announce hiring of new goaltending coach Jamie McCaig joins club; Mike Bergren’s employment agreement not renewed

When the puck drops on the 2016-17 Western Hockey League season, not only will the Kootenay Ice be employing a new starting puck-stopper, they’ll also have a new tutor for their armoured guardians to work with. Monday morning, the Ice announced the hiring of 36-year-old goaltending coach Jamie McCaig, who replaces 35-year-old Mike Bergren. “I’m obviously very excited, it’s a good opportunity in a very, very good league,” McCaig said over the phone between on-ice sessions in Edmonton Monday af-
ternoon. “The chance to work with Luke [Pierce] again is exciting. I know we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us, but it’s no fun if it’s not challenging. “The biggest thing you’ve got to understand in my position is that every guy does it a little bit differently. Carrying that knowledge forward is super important. I like to get to know the goalies I work with, not just at the rink but away from the rink. So much of the game now is how you prepare for things and how you handle stress. “I like to treat each guy a little bit differently and see how they tick, what works for them, what doesn’t and move forward from there. For
me, it’s about not only getting comfortable with each other on the ice, but getting comfortable off of the ice as well.” A native of Penticton, McCaig previously worked alongside Kootenay Ice head coach Luke Pierce with the Merritt Centennials of the British Columbia Hockey League. “Every goaltender is different and he’s not going to try and change the way they play or their natural style,” Pierce said Monday afternoon. “It’s just trying to give each guy little things they can help refine… I think these guys get comfortable playing the way they’ve grown up playing. There’s always little ways they can
Jamie MCCaig make adjustments or subtle things. “I think Jamie’s biggest thing is his ability to communicate with them and relate to what they’re going through. He’s been a goaltender at a high level and he knows what it’s like mentally.” According to Pierce,
the familiarity and history with McCaig was the biggest factor in bringing him aboard. “He’ll be there for them if they’re going through rough patches and he understands me as a coach as well,” Pierce said. “He can sometimes bridge that gap between what goalies maybe don’t understand with what we’re thinking. He can relate to them on a different level that way and, likewise, explain to me a little bit better what they’re thinking at times.” McCaig previously played at University of Brandon (2000 to 2002) and University of Lethbridge (2003 to 2005). He eventually went on to play 11 games with
the Victoria Salmon Kings of the ECHL. He has worked with the Chinese National Women’s hockey team (2009 to 2010) as well as with the Grande Prairie Storm (AJHL), Centennials, La Ronge Ice Wolves (SJHL), Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL) and Sherwood Park Crusaders (AJHL) over the past nine seasons. McCaig served as goaltending coach for Canada West at the 2015 World Junior A Challenge and is the co-owner/operator of ATC Goaltending, which is based out of Edmonton. Bergren had been with the club since the 2012-13 campaign. His employment agreement was not renewed with
the hiring of McCaig. “Mike did a good job here for multiple years with the team,” Pierce said. “I certainly had no issues working with him this year. To me — and you see this happen quite often with different coaches in different places — you start to surround yourself with the people that you feel extremely comfortable with and that was the case with Jamie. “Had Jamie not been a possibility with us, I don’t think there was any reason for us to make a change with Mike.”

Bandits register wins over Loggers, Rangers Cranbrook Bandits score three triumphs in American Legion Baseball this past weekend Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
After having their initially scheduled home-opener rained out May 21, the Cranbrook Bandits (4-3-0) were finally able to take to the diamond at Confederation Park this past Saturday, scoring a pair of victories in American Legion Baseball doubleheader action against the Libby Loggers. The took the opening game of the matinee affair by a 7-3 final, before edging the Loggers 11-10 to close out the afternoon. Sunday, the Bandits headed south of the border to Eureka, Mont., for a doubleheader with the Kootenai Valley Rangers. The two teams battled to a split of the doubleheader, with the Bandits claiming a 15-6 triumph in the first game before falling 9-1 in the back end. Veteran left-handed pitcher Tyler Thorn tossed four innings off the mound in Saturday’s 7-3 win, striking out three batters while only allowing three hits and one earned run. At the plate, outfielder Caden McCormack knocked in two runs with a single during the second inning to give the Bandits a 4-1 lead and all the offense required to take the opening game of the day. The 18-year-old Thorn was strong in registering a 7-3 victory over the Libby Loggers Saturday afternoon in Cranbrook. Loggers, as he was chased following 3.2 innings of action, surrendering five runs (two earned), five walks and four hits. In the backend of Saturday’s doubleheader in Cranbrook, the Bandits required extra innings to get past the Loggers, scoring an 11-10 victory in the bottom of the eighth inning courtesy a single knock from infielder Rylan D’Etcheverry that scored infielder Kei Chlopan from third base. McCormick earned the win on the mound, going 2.1 innings with four strikeouts and no earned runs. The threeyear veteran Bandits got it done at the dish as well, going 2-for-4, including a triple, three
runs scored and one RBI. Tim Carvey took the loss for the Loggers. The Bandits put up a 9-1 lead by the end of the fifth inning before the Loggers blasted nine runs in the top of the

PITTSBURGH Commissioner Gary Bettman said NHL participation in the next Olympics would likely hinge on money. In his annual state of the union address at the Stanley Cup final, Bettman said the league and NHL players association might have to reconsider their participation in the Olympics if the International Olympic Committee went ahead with its threat not to pay out-of-pocket expenses for NHL players. “I’m pretty sure that
our teams are not really interested in paying for the privilege of disrupting our season,” Bettman said. “But we’ll have to see what they ultimately decide to do.” IIHF president Rene Fasel recently revealed the IOC and president Thomas Bach aren’t interested in paying costs transportation and insurance - covered for the past five Olympics. Bettman said resolution of the expense issue would “have a significant impact on our decision.” Deputy commissioner Bill Daly said that decision wasn’t expected
until after the upcoming World Cup, likely in December or January. Bettman also offered a more definitive timetable on a decision for expansion. He said the NHL’s Board of Governors would meet in Las Vegas prior to the NHL awards in June with a decision on expansion, which could include Las Vegas and Quebec City. The three possibilities, he said, were no expansion, deferred expansion or expansion to one or two teams. “I am not going to handicap what’s going to happen,” Bettman said.

Rookie Brandon Thorn earned the start and the victory, throwing three innings with three earned runs, one strikeout and one walk. Jake Bromley cleaned up over the final four innings, striking out six batters while allowing three earned runs. James Dunn took the loss for the Rangers allowing six runs (four earned), five hits and walking four batters over three innings of work. Wrapping a busy weekend, the Bandits fell 9-1 to the Rangers, as Mo Henderson cruised to a complete game performance, only allowing four hits
and one run (zero earned), while striking out four. After the Bandits opened the scoring courtesy a McCormick single that scored Nickell in the top of the first inning, the Rangers rolled, building a 3-1 lead by the bottom of the third inning before exploding for a five-run fifth inning. Rennette took the loss on the mound, lasting 2.1 innings and giving up three earned runs off six hits and a walk. Next up, the Bandits are slated to visit Trail (Saturday) and Spokane (Sunday) this weekend before returning home to host the Glacier Twins at Confederation Park on Saturday, June 11.

SEATTLE - Kyle Seager’s two-run homer in the sixth inning snapped a 2-all tie and Dae-Ho Lee’s three-run shot capped a five-run eighth inning to give the Seattle Mariners a 9-3 victory over the San Diego Padres on Monday. Seattle snapped a three-game losing streak after getting swept at home by Minnesota, the worst team in the American League, thanks to two big innings. Seager’s ninth homer of the season broke a 2-all tie and capped a four-run sixth inning for the Mariners. The two-run shot bounced off the top of the wall in right-centre field and barely eluded the glove of San Diego’s Matt Kemp. Adam Lind had a two-run single in the eighth after Seager was intentionally walked and Lee followed with his seventh homer of the year. The Padres lost for the seventh time in eight games as starter Andrew Cashner (2-5) pitching a season-high 6 1/3 innings.
McCaig joins Ice as new goaltending coach Continued from page 13 Bergren’s tenure spanned back to the days when the Ice deployed a goaltending tandem featuring Mackenzie Skapski and Wyatt Hoflin. With Hoflin having moved on, McCaig will be tasked with guiding Cranbrook native Payton Lee (62-86-7-4, 3.39 GAA, .884 SP, six shutouts) and 17-year-old sophomore Declan Hobbs (2-14-4-0, 4.61 GAA, .873 SP). “We’re turning over a different page here now with Payton coming in,” Pierce said. “This is a really big year for Declan Hobbs and potentially another fresh start for him that way.” Lee was acquired by the Ice in a May trade with the Edmonton Oil Kings, while Hobbs was a third-round selection (53rd overall) at the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. “With Payton, the exciting things is we’re getting a veteran guy who is really excited about coming home to play his last year of junior,” McCaig said. “He’s a guy who has seen and been through a lot of things in the Western Hockey League. All that experience is going to allow him to not only have success in the crease, but help our group out in terms of leadership and maturity. “With Payton, a lot of what we do is going to be maintenance on the ice, continuing to refine fundamental things, review some video and manage how he is handling the workload. That’s the biggest thing with a veteran guy. He is at this point and gotten through the league because he is very capable.” Lee went 12-20-3-1 with a 3.36 GAA, .886 SP and one shutout over 39 games split between the Oil Kings and Vancouver Giants in 2015-16. “With Declan, obvi-
ously he is going into a really exciting year,” McCaig said. “He, along with Wyatt last year, there were some tough nights. He got a lot of experience and some of it was tough experience to get, for sure. But I know he is motivated and looking forward to pushing Payton and taking some of his starts away. “Watching some video on [Hobbs], which I’ve done already, it’s just simple things — how do you manage the rush, how are you handling that first-shot opportunity. There are some things that we’ll kind of work on, but with him, he has a really bright future.” Hobbs went 2-14-3-0 with a 4.66 GAA and .873 SP during his rookie campaign in Cranbrook. McCaig said he hopes to meet with both Lee and Hobbs at some point in the off-season in order to get on the same page and set the stage for success come training camp. Being based out of Edmonton, the expectation is for McCaig to make at least one trip per month to Cranbrook in order to work with both Lee and Hobbs. Ice Chips: The Ice announced the signing of goaltender Jesse Makaj, the team’s second-round selection (23rd overall) at the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft, on May 24. The 6-foot-2 Makaj, a native of North Vancouver, suited up for the North Shore Winter Club this past season, registering a 1.71 GAA and helping his squad to a silver-medal finish at the 2016 B.C. Bantam Tier 1 Championship. He is expected at Kootenay Ice training camp this fall but won’t be eligible for full-time WHL duties until the 2017-18 season…

Dear Annie: When my wife and I took a trip to Canada, my granddaughter and her livein boyfriend at the time called to ask for permission to spend a week in our house, which is near a beach. My wife said OK. This upset me for two reasons: We had $100,000 in precious metals in the house and I was concerned about theft. I had never met this boyfriend. Also, to have someone stay in our house for a week without us there seemed like an invasion of privacy. I was not happy about my wife’s decision, but went along with it to prevent bad feelings. This granddaughter later married the boyfriend and they had a child. It turned out he was an alcoholic and when drunk, he threatened to kill her and the baby. She brought the baby and our son-in-law (her father), and stayed in our house for a few days, again when we weren’t home. They didn’t ask permission this time. My son-in-law has a key. We knew she was escaping the potential abuse, so we said nothing. Last Christmas, I brought up the subject of people staying in my house when I’m not there. Now, neither our granddaughter nor her parents are speaking to us. We’ve called them several times, but they don’t pick up and never return our calls. My daughter is bipolar and has been hostile toward me for many years, mainly because I did not divorce her mother, whom she hated. When her mother died 25 years ago, she transferred that hatred to me, even though my current wife and I always have been friendly and kind to my daughter and her family. So here’s my question: Am I justified, according to social behavior, in objecting to relatives staying in our home when we are not there? I would never stay in anyone’s home without their permission. -- Joe in California Dear Joe: Having people in your house when you aren’t home is a personal choice. Your wife gave permission the first time, which means your complaint should have been directed at her, not your grandchild. (It might also be a good idea to put highly valuable items in a bank safety deposit box.) And while we agree that no one should stay in your house without permission, running away from an abusive spouse is a pretty good reason to show up unexpectedly in a safe place to which you have a key. Your daughter and her family are not responding kindly or rationally, but you also don’t seem to be dealing with them in a productive way. Ask your daughter whether she would be willing to go with you for counseling to resolve this and work on having a better relationship in the future. It seems worth a try. Dear Annie: I have a different response to “Waking Up,” whose friend talks too much. I have a friend who does this. She is a stay-at-home mom and needs to talk to an adult. The rest of her friends work outside the home and have social lives. So when I know I have an hour to spare, I will phone her and just let her talk. John Bay 1927-2016 With family faithfully at his side, John Bay passed away at the Kimberley Special Care Home (The Pines) on May 26, at the age of 88. John was born on August 6, 1927 in the Guernsey district of Saskatchewan, and raised on a farm outside of Humboldt, one of 11 children. He married Bernadette (Bernie) in 1952 and they began their life together in Kimberley, where they built a home in Meadowbrook and raised nine children. In the early years, John worked as a plumber and later as a pipefitter at the pulp mill. John and his family spent many summers camping at Premier and Whiteswan Lake with friends. He loved to spend time outdoors, and enjoyed fishing, hunting and snowmobiling. He was happiest when the whole family gathered at the house for big family dinners followed by hours of cards, games, storytelling and lots of laughs. He will be greatly missed by his eight children: Debbie (Ron) Kerr, Wilf Bay, Brenda Moisson (Andre Lefebvre), Ken (Bev) Bay, Theresa (Grant) Eliuk, Bonnie (Bryan) Hnatiuk, Cindy (Cliff) Hamilton, Kimberley (Bryan) Fletcher. He was a proud Grandpa to fourteen grandchildren: Lisa and Richard (Wilf), Donald and Valarie (Brenda), Brittany, Jacob and Alysha (Ken), Dakota (Theresa), Keaton and Kayla (Bonnie), Krystal and Jocelyn (Cindy), Jessica and Austin (Kimberley). He was also blessed with six great grandchildren: Amylee and Brandon (Wilf), Aubrie, Lilyanne and Aurora (Brenda), and Brookelyn (Ken). He was predeceased by his wife Bernadette and his sons David and baby Gerald. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at The Pines who made John and his family very comfortable in his last days. Service will take place on Saturday, June 4 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. with Father Jim officiating. Interment to follow at the Kimberley Cemetery. Following the service, friends and family are invited to gather at the Catholic Church Hall. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Pines Memorial Society. It is with deep sorrow that the family of Mike Whelan announces his passing on Tuesday, May 24, 2016. Mike was born on February 13, 1943 in Toronto, Ontario. At 8 years of age, Mike and his family moved to North Vancouver, BC. Here, he met the love of his life Luella at a bowling alley, where they both were employed. After a 4 year courtship, Mike and Luella married on June 18, 1965. In 1967 they welcomed their son Brian and the year following they welcomed their second son Jeffrey. In 1975 Mike and Luella moved their young family to Cranbrook. Mike met Fred Graham who became a very close friend and introduced him to the community - something Mike never forgot. He was a proud member of the Cranbrook Kinsmen Club and K40. Mike worked for the federal government for 26 years. He volunteered as a patient representative for the Canadian Immune Deficiencies Patient Organization helping immune patients with subcutaneous treatments. In 2002 Mike received a certificate in Public Management from the University of Victoria. Mike is survived by his wife Luella, sons Brian and Jeffrey (Laura), sisters Adele and Claire, 8 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his father Ross Whelan, mother Yvonne Whelan and brother Patrick Whelan. A memorial service for Mike was held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at 10:00 am. FREE Landscape and Outdoor Water Audits The City of Kimberley in partnership with The Columbian Basin Trust is committed to reducing water consumption and has employed a summer student for the Water Smart Ambassadors program. The students primary role is to educate residents on water conservation issues and there importance to the community; (infrastructure demand strains, etc.). The student is excited to book free consultations with residents to test the efficiency of their irrigation systems and offer advice on ways to improve it. Residences that partake in assessments will receive a free automatic shut off hose timer. Finally the student will conduct residential water audit in order to identify and inform residence of ways to reduce water consumption in and around the home. Composting at home made easy
M
any homeo w n e r s spend substantial amounts of time and money tending to their lawns. A lush lawn can be a point of pride for homeowners, and well-maintained landscapes also have a positive effect on property value. Homeowners who want to take care of their lawns and gardens in an eco-friendly way may want to consider composting. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, food scraps and lawn waste make up about 20 to 30 percent of what we throw away each year. Composting such waste can enrich the soil in homeowners’ yards while also reducing the size of local landfills, where food scraps and lawn waste contribute to the production of methane, a
potent and harmful greenhouse gas. Composting is relatively simple and serves as a cost-effective way to enrich soil and suppress plant diseases and pest infestations. Homeowners who want to try their hand at composting can consider the following advice from the EPA. • Purchase the right tools. Composting is not expensive, but you will need a few tools to help maintain your compost pile. A pitchfork or square-point shovel will be necessary so you can periodically mix or turn the compost. In addition, a water hose with a spray head can help maintain the pile. • Choose the right spot. A compost pile or bin should be placed in a shady area close to a water source. Shade will help ensure the pile
does not dry out too quickly, especially for those homeowners who live in warmer climates. Those who live in colder regions may want to locate their piles in spots that get some sun exposure to trap some solar heat in their piles. Build the pile over lawn or soil instead of over surfaces like asphalt or concrete. • Add materials as you collect them. The EPA notes that composting requires three basic ingredients: water, brown materials and green materials. Brown materials include dead branches, leaves and twigs, while greens include grass clippings, vegetable waste, fruit scraps, and
coffee grounds. Chop larger materials as necessary, adding both brown and green materials as you collect them and watering dry materials as necessary. • Bury fruit and vegetable waste. When adding fruit and vegetable waste, bury it beneath 10 inches of compost material. You can do this by mixing your pile with your pitchfork or shovel. If necessary, cover the top of your compost pile with a tarp so the pile can retain moisture. Compost may take as long as two years before it’s usable, but when materials are dark and rich in color, they’re ready to be spread.

The event, put on by the Sunrise Rotary Club and the East Kootenay Credit Union, featured three course routes of 8 km, 16.6 km and 20.2 km.
