Kimberley Search and Rescue was quickly activated after two subjects capsized in the St Mary’s River, on Saturday June 4. A canoe overturned throwing two subjects into the cold water. They managed to drift to a sandbar but were unable to get back to shore. A witness saw them stranded in the river and called 911, the RCMP called out Search and Rescue through Emergency Management BC. Fifteen members of search and rescue attended, eight of which are swift water trained. A jet boat was utilized to get them safely back to shore where they were checked out. They received minor injuries to their knees and feet from the rocks but are otherwise fine. . From the wife of one of the men, “I would like to send a tremendous thank you to Kimberley SAR for returning my husband to me last night after a horrendous experience trying to canoe down the St. Mary River. He’s a little banged up and his pride is pretty bruised... but he is home. And alive. Thanks to you!” Shelly Hicks one of the Kimberley SAR training coordinators says, “Just last month 10 members were certified or recertified in swift water rescue. Our training paid off and we were able to successfully rescue the two without any issues”. The two had received incorrect information as to the class of rapids the St Mary’s River was at this time of year. They did everything right by getting to a safe place and waiting for help. The SAR volunteers continually train to assist those in need. The area is beautiful and many enjoy it but the ruggedness creates a risk. Be prepared!

Province redirects money to school districts SD6 nets $168,700 C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

Last week, the BC Liberal government announced they were redirecting $25 million in administrative savings from school districts back into frontline services for students. Education Minister Mike Bernier said districts can use the funding any way they see fit – for hiring new teachers, for programs, or for maintaining schools despite falling enrolment in certain regions. SD6 superintendent Paul Carriere says that the pro rata portion of those funds in SD6 is $168,700. The district is currently in the budget development process and any funds are certainly welcome, as the current budget contains “many cost pressures”, according to Carriere. The $25 million overall is not actually new funding.

“Government required Districts to find savings of $29 million last year, and then a further $25 million this year,” Carriere said. “The total savings we were required to find in SD6 over the two years is $359,358. They are now giving back to Districts the $25 million and we understand now that those funds will be ongoing. Our pro rata portion of that in SD6 is $168,700. We are still required to continue showing annual administrative savings totalling $190,658 going forward. “Districts were required to find these savings only in administration; direct services to students were to be unaffected by these reductions. However in our district we did not reduce any grants to schools (i.e. there was no impact to schools either in services to students or school administration services of any kind). “Now that the 2nd round of administrative savings will no longer be required, the Board will consider this as part of the budget process.”

All about bike safety and the Motor Vehicle Act Kimberley RCMP

With the warmer temperatures more cyclists are now on the road. It is also a good time to review some of the rules of the road with respect to riding a bicycle. Parents should discuss with kids the approved biking areas. Kids younger than 10 years old might consider riding on the sidewalk rather than the street. What to teach young cyclists about cycling on the sidewalk: • Always yield to pedestrians. Get off and walk your bike or put your foot down. • Ride slowly. • Always walk your bike through a crosswalk. • Use a bell or horn to let pedestrians know you are there. • Look for cars in driveways laneways and at intersections and be prepared to stop. • Expect pedestrians to exit from stores. Road Rules: • Always ride with your hands on the handlebars. • Cross at intersections. When you pull out between parked cars, driver’s can’t see you coming

• Walk your bike across busy intersections using the crosswalk and following traffic signals • Ride on the right-hand side of the street, so you travel in the same direction as cars. NEVER ride against traffic. • Don’t ride too close to parked cars. Doors can open suddenly. • Stop at all stop signs and obey street (red) lights just as cars do. • Ride single file on the street with friends. • When passing other bikers or people on the street, always pass to their left side. A bicycle is the smallest vehicle on the road. It is important therefore, for cyclists to be visible, to ride predictably, to know how traffic works, and to communicate with other road users. Anticipating the traffic behaviours of cars, trucks, and even pedestrians, can go a long way to helping avoid accidents. It will also help to learn some hand signals. These are akin to turn signals and brake lights for bikers. It will help cars and trucks know what you will do next, so they don’t run into you.

A person operating a cycle on a roadway has the same rights and duties as a driver of a vehicle. Although there are certain sections under the Motor Vehicle Act specific to bicycles, for the most part the rules are the same. There seems to be some confusion with respect to yielding to bicycles particularly at intersections and cross walks. Unless the cyclist dismounts and walks they are considered a vehicle and should be treated as such. If there is a stop sign a cyclist must stop and yield to the cross traffic. If they get off the bike and walk, the vehicles must yield to them as they are now considered pedestrians. Traffic education for both cyclists and motor vehicles operators goes a long way in preventing collisions. IDLEWILD PARK MASTER PLAN PUBLIC WORKSHOP TONIGHT!

MOSQUITO CONTROL – WHAT CAN YOU DO?

The City of Cranbrook invites the community to participate in the creation of a new Master Plan for Idlewild Park.

Effective mosquito control requires the combined the efforts of individual property/ homeowners with those of the City of Cranbrook Mosquito Control Program. With water levels lower than average this year sources of standing water from around your property will have a huge potential for mosquito development. Some places to eliminate standing water include: • Clogged gutters and ditches, • Trays under flower pots, • Outside pets’ dishes, • Children’s pools and toys, • Untreated or unmaintained pools or ponds • Bird baths and feeders, • Tarps • Canoes / boats, • Tires Residents are encouraged to call the Mosquito Hotline at (250) 421-1294 to report potential mosquito development sites or for more information regarding the Mosquito Control Program.

Last spring over 1000 Cranbrook residents enthusiastically participated in the Idlewild Park Community Survey identifying how the park is used, and priorities for improvements. The Master Plan team is building on that valuable input as part of the Idlewild Master Plan process. A workshop will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 from 6:00 - 8:30pm at the Memorial Arena in the warm viewing room. The event will provide an opportunity for community members to share perspectives on what makes Idlewild Park special, generate a vision and ideas for park improvements, and discuss how partnerships in the community can bring the vision to life. For more information, please contact Chris New, Director of Leisure Services at 250-489-0251.

Borrow and spend best for B.C.?

W

ith 11 months to redefine itself for voters, Premier Christy Clark’s B.C. Liberal government has dialed back its boasting about four consecutive balanced budgets, and has begun creating the impression of a minor spending spree. It picked up with a series of education funding announcements. First Education Minister Mike Bernier unveiled an increase to the province’s “fix-it fund,” as he calls it. This is not to be confused with the annual “facilities grant” provided to school districts each year, or the carbon tax collected from schools and hospitals that is then doled out for approved energy upgrades. The “fix-it fund” was $20 million last year, but this past March, Bernier announced it was increased to $40 million, and called for districts to propose roof, electrical, heating and other projects that could be done by March 2017. After going through the submissions, Bernier announced in mid-May that the fund is up to $45 million. The increase is not new money, he assured reporters. That means it’s taken from the next two years of the three-year education budget. Hence my reference to “creating the impression” of a spending spree. Or perhaps Cowichan Valley NDP MLA Bill

Routley’s favourite expression captures it best: “jiggery-pokery.” Then Bernier found another $25 million for struggling school district operations, by returning “administrative savings” his ministry had required from districts for the second year running. With some school districts charging for bus service or cutting it out entirely, the “administrative savings” argument wasn’t BC VIEWS doing so well. The B.C. NDP ran its last Tom election campaign on the Fletcher assertion that the 2013 budget wasn’t going to be balanced, despite a run of land sales to stop the flow of red ink left from buying the province out of the harmonized sales tax. But B.C. Liberal Finance Minister Mike de Jong did balance the books, with the help of a temporary tax increase on incomes of $150,000 and up. Then came last year’s federal election, and balanced budgets got a bad name. Justin Trudeau’s Liberals insisted the Stephen Harper Conservatives were running a hidden deficit and starving us into recession. Trudeau promised “modest” deficits of no more than $10 billion a year to stimulate the economy. Federal NDP leader Thomas Mulcair promised to balance the budget while still providing national daycare and other

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

big-ticket services. He lost, and his party turned away from him and from “austerity,” as borrow-and-spend enthusiasts like to call paying for public services as you go. NDP leader John Horgan took note of the apparent shift in public mood to tolerate borrowing. The NDP under Adrian Dix promised deficit spending four years ago, but wrapped it in a claim it would only spend the B.C. Liberals’ alleged hidden deficit. That didn’t work very well. In 2017, will Horgan follow Mulcair’s path or Trudeau’s? He is careful not to commit himself now on specific positions, but in a recent interview with The Vancouver Sun, Horgan did question the need to account for the costs of every promise. “Justin Trudeau didn’t cost a damn thing,” he said. “And Donald Trump’s not costed a damn thing, nor did Bernie Sanders, and I don’t imagine Hillary Clinton will either.” Actually, Trudeau did cost his platform for voters. Then, after winning a majority, he threw those estimates out and tripled the forecast deficits. Canada spent itself into a huge hole in the 1970s, and it took until the 1990s to get out of it. We’ll soon find out if that lesson is lost on a new generation of voters. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

New rules

OPINION/EVENTS LETTERS to the EDITOR

The main route from Cranbrook to my house, for decades was developed from an old wagon road. Until recently, the rules, south from the 10th Street South intersection at Victoria Avenue, were standard highway rules. But recently, the rules were changed for the 22nd Avenue/13 Street South highway curve — the intersection of the turn-off to Kootenay Orchards school and the road up to Gold Creek It seems that, for this intersection only (as far as I know, but I have only been driving since the mid-1960s) highway rules have now been suspended, so that drivers heading towards Kootenay Orchards School can choose to charge across the Gold Creek bound lane with impunity. Gold Creek bound drivers must now pause and yield the right of way to downhill traffic regardless of whether that downhill bound traffic is going to follow the normal highway curve towards Victoria Avenue, or choose to charge across their lane towards the school. Some questions come to mind. 1. Will parents rushing to take their kids to school be exempted from other highway rules, or elsewhere? What is this teaching their kids about rules of the road? 2. Will this new exemption apply to all highway curves?

3. There have been some interesting adaptations to this new situation from some courteous Gold Creek drivers. Some considerate drivers are now using their turn signal lights at this intersection, to announce their intentions to oncoming traffic. That way, Gold Creek bound traffic doesn’t always have to stop and wait for nothing, just because they have no clue what the downhill traffic is up to. Will courtesy rule? 4. My future preference, in the interest of safety, would be to make this a 3-way stop, with seal-coat pebbling to increase stopping traction on icy days. Will the people of the area get input and a vote on this? Or, will future rules of the road be decided by the Captains of Chaos? Frank Hastings Cranbrook

CDART

We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks for your support of Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team (CDART) South East BC. Since our inception less than three months ago, we have been able to establish ourselves solidly in the East Kootenay region, recruiting a core of talented and dedicated volunteers that share our passion for the well-being of our animals. As

well, our public profile has grown tremendously, thanks to the support of the public and local organizations. We hope to continue to grow, providing emergency rescue of domestic animals and livestock along with other services to our area, eventually covering the entire Southeast Fire Region of our province. None of this would be possible without the donations and assistance we have received from our local communities. Ron McConnell Lynn Davis Co-ordinators, CDART South East BC

Those baggies

I guess you can say that I am a daily walker/hiker on the awesome trails in the Kimberley area. What really irks me is the people who walk their dogs and pick up their poop and leave the little baggies on the side of the trail or hanging from a tree or telephone pole. Who do they think is going to pick this up, The Poop Fairy? Get with it people. Is it really that hard to carry that little poop bag to the nearest garbage bin. I do! Karen Nordby Kimberley

Hip to the tricks of the Hip tix

T

Trevor Crawley he excitement of getting a chance to see one of The Tragically Hip’s final shows quickly deflated on Friday afternoon—even as three different people at the Townsman office sat at their computers, enthusiastically working the Ticketmaster website when tickets were released at 10 a.m. Those same three people shouted frantically as the website opened up, but all that soon turned to despair in minutes as hearts started to sink faster than New Orleans with an error message explaining that no tickets were available. One Townsman employee, a member of the Tragically Hip fan club, also couldn’t get tickets on two separate pre-sale days, going through the same experience of logging on to Ticketmaster, before tickets sold out in under a few minutes. Oh, well. Right? It’s the Hip’s final Canadian farewell tour following the tragic revelation of lead singer Gord Downie’s incurable brain cancer. With a career spanning over three decades with 13 studio albums to their name and dozens of hit singles, the group has established itself as one of Canada’s most treasured artists, both at home and abroad.

That explains the frenzy for getting ahold of tickets for their farewell tour, however, there’s a darker underside to the story as well. No more than 20 minutes after tickets were released by Ticketmaster, the scalpers were posting tickets up on websites such as Stubhub at prices double, triple or higher than the original selling rate. As for how tickets could sell so quickly, one likely explanation is bots—software programs resellers use that can make hundreds of transactions per second. Normally, one would laugh at scalpers for jacking up the price, but with the very real possibility of this being the last tour by Downie and the Hip, they are using supply and demand to make a tidy profit. Scoop up as many tickets as possible, inflate the price as high as the market will bear, and make money. It’s simple supply-side economics. However, with the context of Downie’s cancer diagnosis and the very real possibility that the Hip will never play a show after this tour, fans are—quite rightly—livid with what ticket resellers are doing. Profiteering off of a terminally ill musician is about as low as one could go. You know the public is choked when concert ticket sales get brought up by politicians, as the Vancouver Sun quoted BC NDP MLA Spencer Chandra Hebert calling the situation “gross.”

TOWNSMAN FILE PHOTO

Tragically Hip front man Gord Downie, pictured at the Hip’s Cranbrook concert, January, 2013. According to the Sun’s article, Chandra Hebert has sent a letter off to Suzanne Anton, the B.C. Justice Minister to investigate the issue of price-gouging in ticket sales. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was also asked about the issue of ticket pricing fairness at an event at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, according to a recent CBC article. The article further stated that Trudeau said the government would be willing to follow up on the issue, and that the music and ticket industries “ought to be able to police themselves.” Those are good soundbites, but as an issue, it’s something the provincial and federal governments don’t really have any legislative control over. Supply and demand still have the rule of the land, but it will be inter-

esting to see how many people are willing to shell out $500 for a single ticket in the nosebleed section. But it’s still hard not to be frustrated. The Hip put on a great show when they came through Cranbrook in January 2013. Downie was mesmerizing at the forefront of the band, while Paul Langlois, Rob Baker, Gord Sinclair and Johnny Fay ran through the group’s extensive catalogue of hits and rocked out Western Financial Place as part of their Now For Plan A tour, in support of their album of the same name. Now fans are left feeling so hard done by as ticket prices via resellers are beyond reasonable for their 15-stop Man Machine Poem tour. That is fully, completely disheartening.

Evan, Anna and Ella Adrian served as the honorary chairs of the 21st annual Gutsy Walk to stop Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis at Rotary Park on Sunday morning. The three siblings participated in the Gutsy Walk in honour of their mom, grandmother and two aunts who live with Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are diseases that inflame the lining of the GI (gastrointestinal) tract and disrupt your body’s ability to digest food, absorb nutrition and eliminate waste in a healthy manner. The walk was just one of many that occurred across the country which served as a fundraiser, with the goal of raising $3.5 million nationally.

IDLEWILD PARK MASTER PLAN PUBLIC WORKSHOP The City of Cranbrook invites the community to participate in the creation of a new Master Plan for Idlewild Park. Last spring over 1000 Cranbrook residents enthusiastically participated in the Idlewild Park Community Survey identifying how the park is used, and priorities for improvements. The Master Plan team is building on that valuable input as part of the Idlewild Master Plan process. A workshop will be held on Tuesday June 7, 2016 from 6:00 - 8:30pm at the Memorial Arena in the warm viewing room. The event will provide an opportunity for community members to share perspectives on what makes Idlewild Park special, generate a vision and ideas for park improvements, and discuss how partnerships in the community can bring the vision to life. For more information, please contact Chris New, Director of Leisure Services at 250-489-0251.

2015 ANNUAL REPORT The City of Cranbrook 2015 Annual Report will be presented to Council for consideration at the Annual General Meeting on June 27, 2016, at 3:00 pm in the City Hall Council Chambers. The 2015 Annual Report will be available for public review on the City website (www. cranbrook.ca) or at City Hall reception beginning on June 6, 2016. This notice is published in accordance with Section 99 of the Community Charter.

Hunter S. Thompson, the hard-drinking, drug-taking, Harleyriding, and gun-wielding journalist of all things gonzo, fathered only one child in his life — a mild-mannered computer nerd who was horrible at sports and liked to play Dungeons and Dragons. In ‘Stories I Tell Myself,’ Juan Thompson describes his life growing in the long shadow of a man who was convinced his son was gay. Full of photos and letters between the two, Juan’s writing frequently jumps above his father’s famous style. To celebrate his 12th birthday, a young boy tries to get into the Guinness World Record Book in Andree Poulin’s hilarious ‘The Biggest Poutine in the World.’ Storytime is on hiatus until September, which means the Summer Reading Club is right around the corner. The 2016 Summer Reading Club theme is Book a Trip! Summer Reading Club is FREE for children and teens and registration starts at the library on Saturday, June 25th. Attend the registration event on June 25th from 11:00am to 1:00pm and enter for the registration prize draw. Weekly programs, contests, and prizes start July 5th! Scorching bats power Bandits to trio of triumphs Cranbrook Bandits strike for 42 runs over four games in Trail to improve to 7-4-0 in American Legion Baseball action Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

With the mercury rising in the East Kootenay and the bats of the Cranbrook Bandits (7-4-0) absolutely on fire, one might wonder if there is a sudden correlation between the two. As record temperatures teased across the region, Cranbrook’s boys of summer did their part to heat up the Kootenays, scorching opponents for 42 runs over four games en route to three American Legion Baseball victories at Butler Park in Trail this past weekend. After being blanked 6-0 by the Trail Orioles to open the mini tournament, the Bandits’ bats lit up the diamond, burning Spokane’s North Central Indians twice, by scores of 13-3 and 11-1, before exacting revenge on the Orioles with an 18-7 triumph. “We got better every game,” said Paul Mrazek, head coach of the Bandits, Monday morning. “That’s our goal — every weekend, get a little bit better and understand the game a bit better in different situations. [We’re] trying to get people comfortable. It’s not comfortable being in a situation you haven’t been in before and there are a lot of different things that can happen in baseball. “I’m happy with the level of understanding of what’s important in different situations — we’re getting better at that. We’re hitting the ball fairly well and we’re minimizing the errors.” On the mound, Kei Chlopan went five innings deep, striking out six and allowing only two earned runs as he powered the Bandits to

a 13-3 win over the Indians Saturday afternoon. Battling to a 3-3 draw through four innings, the Bandits took a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning before the bats exploded for a half dozen runs in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach. At the dish, Tyler Thorn led the productivity with three hits and two runs scored, while Sho Kanzaki registered a pair of RBI. After falling in Saturday’s opener to the Orioles, the Bandits were out for revenge in a Sunday morning rematch with their Trail rivals. Thorn tossed five effective innings, striking out four batters while allowing six earned runs on six hits to earn the win. Outfielder Jake Bromley went 3-for-5 at the plate, knocking in two RBI and scoring three times himself as the Bandits offense provided more than enough run support en route to an 18-7 mercy win over the Orioles. According to Mrazek, this is only the second time in program history that the Bandits have managed to knock off the Orioles, making the big win a notable accomplishment. “Any weekend that we beat Trail is a great weekend,” said Mrazek, who previously spent the better part of six years involved in Trail baseball before coming to Cranbrook. “This was the second time we beat Trail in my 10 years here [in Cranbrook].” Infielder Robert Nickell and outfielder Cedar Kemp both contributed to the offensive outburst for the Bandits, cranking three RBIs each. The Bandits knocked out a resounding 11-1 win over the Indians, rounding out a successful weekend in the West Kootenay. through four innings, the Bandits pulled away with a three-run effort in the top of the fifth before piling on with 10 runs in the top of the sixth to put the contest out of reach. Wrapping up the weekend Sunday afternoon, the Bandits lay another beating on the Indians as Dan Mercandelli fired six innings of one-run ball (zero earned) with four strikeouts to guide his squad to an 11-1 triumph. The offense was lively once again, as the Bandits tacked six runs up on the scoreboard before the Indians broke their own goose egg in the top of the sixth inning. A five-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth inning put the finishing

touches on another successful weekend for Mrazek’s charges. Infielder Linden Meggison and outfielder Caden McCormack tallied three RBI each, while Nickell came across home plate three times himself.

Having jumped out to a 7-4-0 start thus far in the American Legion Baseball campaign, the Bandits have notched 98 runs, averaging nearly nine (8.91) per outing, while holding opponents to 5.36 per game (59 runs). That’s a pretty

good recipe for success considering the Bandits have yet to reach the quarter mark of the campaign. “We had quite a few extra-base hits and we’re working on understanding pitch counts, what to expect on different pitch counts and how to set yourself up so that you can get more fastballs,” Mrazek said of his team’s offensive prowess to this point in the season. “As a hitter, if you can avoid swinging at balls and helping that [pitcher] — stop swinging at something in the dirt, stop swinging at something in your letters… That understanding of how to set yourself up to get more fastballs so that you can be more successful and you can be more confi-

dent, I think our players are getting a better understanding of that.” In all, the Bandits collected five extra-base hits over the four-game weekend, with Bromley striking for two, including a triple in Saturday’s 13-3 win over the Indians. The Bandits 18-7 win over the Orioles featured a pair of doubles courtesy Thorn and Bromley. While the offense is chugging along nicely, the Bandits are getting things done on the defensive side of the game as well. “We pitched well and made most of the plays,” Mrazek said. “That’s all we can ask for. “We’ve got four goals with the team this year. One is to throw strikes

because if pitchers don’t throw strikes, the ball is not going to be hit and the defense can’t do any work. There’s nothing we can do if we walk people… Two is make the routine plays on defense. Three — hit the ball on the ground. Four — don’t strike out looking. That’s it. If we can do that, we’ll be okay.” After a four-game jaunt in Trail, the Bandits return home for four games at Confederation Park this weekend. Saturday, the Glacier Twins visit from Whitefish, Mont., for a doubleheader slated to begin at 1 p.m. On Sunday, it’s the Kalispell Lakers paying a visit to Cranbrook, with a doubleheader getting underway at 1 p.m.

Ali’s confidence, cockiness made him symbol of black pride Jesse J. Holl and Associated Press

WASHINGTON - For Muhammad Ali, the idea of being a humble athlete - someone pre-packaged and palatable for white America - was never an option.

Instead, he demanded respect not only as a boxer but as a brash, unbought and unbossed black man and endeared himself to African-Americans as a symbol of black pride. He radiated courage

and confidence, skill and showmanship. “He became the incarnation of black defiance, black protest and black excellence at the same time,” said Rev. Al Sharpton, a longtime friend of Ali’s.

Ali, who died Friday at 74, gave voice to many blacks frustrated with a white society that asked them to fight communism in Vietnam but openly practiced segregation and discrimination at home.

“At a time when blacks who spoke up about injustice were labeled uppity and often arrested under one pretext or another, Muhammad willingly sacrificed the best years of his career to stand tall and

fight for what he believed was right,” said retired NBA star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who like Ali converted to Islam. Abdul-Jabbar was among several prominent African-American athletes in the late 1960s

who supported the boxer for his religious beliefs and as a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War.

The Kootenay East Youth Soccer Association (KEYSA) struck success at the Columbia Valley “Clash of the Titans” Youth Soccer Tournament in Invermere over the weekend of May 27 to 29.

KEYSA made the trip north with 11 teams in tow, each of which put forth an outstanding effort, according to KEYSA administrator Brandy Sims. The U18 boys and U15 girls led the Cranbrook charge, with each club taking home a firstplace finish.

KEYSA’s U12 boys’ entry into the tournament landed a second-place finish, while the U12 girls, U13 boys, U14 girls and U16 boys each finished in third place in their respective divisions. The month of June will take KEYSA to Lethbridge, Alta., and Kalis-

pell, Mont., for more tournament action, while the annual Sam Steele Youth Soccer Tournament is slated for June 18 and 19 at Moir Park and Mount Baker Fields. The annual youth tourney is already at capacity, with registration full in all divisions.

Kimberley native Carter Bancks re-signs with AHL’s Utica Comets Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

Kimberley native Carter Bancks is returning to the Utica Comets. Friday, The 26-yearold East Kootenay product officially ensured his tenure with the American Hockey League’s Comets will continue when he signed a twoyear contract extension to remain in Utica. “I could not be happier to be coming back

to Utica,” Bancks told UticaComets.com. “I have had the most fun of my life playing for the Comets and in front of the best fans in professional sports. The way the community has embraced us and supported us has made Utica feel like a second home.” The 5-foot-11, 181pound Bancks posted career numbers during the 2015-16 AHL campaign, establishing personal bests in goals (14),

assists (25) and points (39) through 76 games. Over the course of a 357game AHL career with the Comets and Abbotsford Heat, Bancks has registered 35 goals and 70 assists for 105 points. After finishing third in the AHL’s North Division with a record of 3826-8-4 at the conclusion of the regular season, the Comets fell 3-1 in a best-of-five first-round playoff series with the Albany Devils.

Following a junior career that featured 262 regular season games with the WHL’s Lethbridge Hurricanes (58120-178) and 62 games with the KIJHL’s Kimberley Dynamiters (25-5479), Bancks signed a free agent contract with the NHL’s Calgary Flames. The gritty forward first joined the Comets in 2014, following three seasons with the AHL affiliate of the Flames, the Abbotsford Heat.

Pair of Ice alumni head in different directions Taylor Rocc a

A pair of Kootenay Ice alumni are headed in different directions. Former Ice defenceman Brayden McNabb (2006-07 to 2010-11) signed a two-year contract extension worth a

reported $3.4-million with the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. Meanwhile, former Ice forward Max Reinhart (2008-09 to 2011-12) is taking his game overseas, signing a one-year contract with Kolner

Haie of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL, Germany) on Monday. McNabb has played 189 career regular season games with the Kings, recording 46 points (5-41-46). Reinhart spent 2015-

16 with the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals, registering 38 points (23-1538) in 73 games with the farm team of the NHL’s Nashville Predators. McNabb and Reinhart helped the Ice claim the 2011 WHL crown.

Unapologetically arrogant about his looks and his skills, Ali taunted opponents by reciting playful poetry and frequently declared himself “pretty” and “the greatest.” Many people had never heard a successful black man talk about himself so boldly in front of whites. And it made a difference, Ali biographer Thomas Hauser said. “Every time that Muhammad Ali looked in the mirror and said ‘I’m so pretty,” what he was really saying - before it became fashionable - is ‘black is beautiful,“ Hauser said. ”I can’t tell you how many people ... have come up to me and said, ‘Before Muhammad Ali, I thought it was better to be white than black. I was ashamed of my colour, and Ali made me proud. Ali made me just as happy to be black as somebody else being white.’“ Ali’s blackness infused everything he did and everything he was. “If you wanted to make it in this country, you had to be quiet, carry yourself in a certain way and not say anything about what was going on, even though there was a knife sticking in your chest,” recalled the late black journalist Gil Noble in an essay written by Hauser. “Ali changed all of that. He just laid it out and talked about racism and slavery and all of that stuff. He put it on the table. And everybody who was black, whether they said it overtly or covertly, said ‘Amen.”’ The day after winning his first world heavyweight championship, Ali announced he had joined the Nation of Islam and had shed his “slave” name of Cassius Clay. He refused to be drafted into the U.S. military to fight in Vietnam. He was convicted of draft evasion, banned from boxing and stripped of his heavyweight title. When asked about his stance on the North Vietnamese, Ali famously said: “They never

called me nigger. They never lynched me. They didn’t put no dogs on me. They didn’t rob me of my nationality, rape and kill my mother and father.” He was eventually cleared by the U.S. Supreme Court and won back his boxing title. With that, Ali had defeated what many blacks saw as a racist system regardless of whether Ali was right or wrong in his particular stance.

“If there was a Mount Rushmore erected for influential black figures in America, he would not be on the mountain. He would be the mountain.” Rev. Al Sharpton — Longtime friend of Muhammad Ali It would have been easier and more lucrative for Ali to keep quiet and go along with what many in white society wanted from him, said his longtime friend and sports commentator Howard Cosell. They wanted “a white man’s black man,” Cosell once said. The United States has a long history of expecting deference from black athletes, said Clarence Lang, chairman of the African and African-American studies department at the University of Kansas. “The expectation is that you will keep your head down, that you don’t make white people uncomfortable by being excellent and being mindful and outspoken about the fact that you are excellent,” Lang said. Ali didn’t do deference. “I am America,” he boasted. “I am the part you won’t recognize. But get used to me black, confident, cocky. My name, not yours. My religion, not yours. My goals, my own.”

The boxer “made people accept him as a man, as an equal, and he was not afraid to represent himself in that way,” NFL great Jim Brown said. President Barack Obama, the nation’s first black president, keeps a set of Ali’s gloves on display in the White House. “He stood with King and Mandela, stood up when it was hard, spoke out when others wouldn’t,” Obama said. “His fight outside the ring would cost him his title and his public standing. It would earn him enemies on the left and the right, make him reviled and nearly send him to jail. But Ali stood his ground. And his victory helped us get used to the America we recognize today.” Lang said it would be wrong to assume that Ali was beloved during his time as a boxing champ. He stepped outside of the mainstream of the civil rights movement with some of his rhetoric, outside of the religious community with his conversion to the Nation of Islam and outside of the black military community with his refusal to go to Vietnam. “In some ways, Ali became a loveable figure after his heyday, after his career,” Lang said. “I think people love to love him now.” But even back then, people who might not necessarily agree with the rhetoric of militant black activists such as H. Rap Brown, Stokely Carmichael or Malcolm X “could nevertheless respect Ali’s talent,” Lang said. Ali, Sharpton said, “went from one of the most despised figures in the world to one of the most popular men in the world because people respected that he really authentically believed and sacrificed for what he believed in.” “If there was a Mount Rushmore erected for influential black figures in America,” Sharpton added, “he would not be on the mountain. He would be the mountain.”

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Defer to others, if you can. Don’t

get too involved in someone else’s thoughts and ideas. Be more like an observer or a boss, and let this person work out his or her issues naturally. You could be up for a major change if you’d just relax. Tonight: Don’t pressure yourself so much. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Understand those around you better by imagining what it is like to walk in their shoes. You might feel as if you can’t really tolerate that experience, but it will be important in creating a stronger bond between you and others. Tonight: Tap into your imagination. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You’ll want to understand what is happening between you and someone else. Your sense of humor will help you take what could be a piercing remark with a grain of salt. You could be shocked by a loved one and his or her ideas. Tonight: Time to lighten up the mood. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You could be pushing harder than you have in a while. You might be wondering why some-

one is behaving in such an outrageous manner. Know that you can’t change this person, but you certainly can distance yourself from him or her. Tonight: Sort through your priorities. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Don’t push as hard as you have in the recent past. Some of you might consider starting a diet, while others will opt to start a new gym or exercise program. A friend or loved one could be more fiery and irritable than you realize. Tonight: Get some extra R and R, then decide. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Your imagination will fill in the blanks of what is not being discussed between you and another party. You might have a theory as to why this person who is opening up the discussion does not want to spend more time with you. Possibly he or she is not ready to share his or her feelings. Tonight: Be both naughty and nice. BORN TODAY Singer/songwriter Prince (1958), singer Tom Jones (1940), artist Paul Gauguin (1848)

Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My husband does not like to have any physical contact whatsoever, except for a peck hello or goodbye. He does not like to be touched. There is no cuddling. We don’t have sex. There is nothing. We’ve been married for eight years, and I can guarantee that we had more sex prior to our wedding than we’ve had since. I have never met anyone like this. I long for an intimate relationship. Whenever we had sex, it was because I initiated it or complained that we never had sex. It’s been eight months now and I just don’t have it in me to try anymore. And he obviously doesn’t miss it. We’ve attempted counseling, but it was short-lived. He never has given any reason as to why he is this way. Do I stay or do I go? -- Lonely Dear Lonely: Does your husband have other redeeming qualities or does the lack of intimacy trump everything else? Has he had a physical checkup? It could be a hormonal imbalance like low testosterone, or erectile dysfunction. Is he asexual? Is he gay and using the marriage to stay in the closet? Is he depressed? Has he lost interest in you? Is he having an affair? These are all possibilities that should be explored. Don’t be coy. Ask him directly about each of these issues. You can offer to accompany him to his doctor to discuss it. You can insist that the two of you return to counseling to sort this out. But if he refuses to talk about the problem and will not seek treatment of any kind, your decision is whether you are better off with him or without him the way he is. Dear Annie: “Mom of Three” sounds like my husband’s mother. “Mom” said that ever since her son married, he spends all of his time with his wife’s family and she rarely sees him. There may be significant reasons why her son doesn’t want to visit, and it may have nothing to do with his wife. I’ve been married to my husband for 20 years. He was raised in a strict home with a physically and mentally abusive father and a neurotic mother who did nothing to protect him and his two siblings. At 50, my husband still has serious scars, both physical and mental. His mother is in total denial of her son’s abusive upbringing. Whenever he mentions it, she scolds him for talking about family matters and quickly changes the subject. In addition, his parents are not shy about sharing their racist, bigoted ideas in public, which makes social outings embarrassing and uncomfortable. The facade his family presents to others is totally superficial. He can barely tolerate being in their presence and often makes excuses to avoid contact with them. -- His Wife Dear Wife: There are always two sides to every story. Any parent whose grown child avoids them (whether newly married or not) should take a good look at their own behavior to make sure it is not the reason for the estrangement. And if it is, the child should have the gumption to say so. Behavior cannot be changed if it is not recognized and addressed. Province takes control of assisted dying Tom Fle tcher Black Press

With the federal law against assisted suicide expired as of Tuesday and a replacement not yet approved in Ottawa, the B.C. government has adopted the latest doctors’ standards as the law until the situa-

tion is clarified. New professional standards set by the College of Physicians and Surgeons for assisting a patient to die are to be enforced by regulation until the federal law is clear, B.C. Health MInister Terry Lake and Justice Minister Su-

zanne Anton said in a statement Monday. “As laid out in the Supreme Court of Canada’s February 2015 ruling, doctors will no longer be prohibited from providing medical assistance in dying to competent, consenting adults who have a griev-

ous or irremediable medical condition that causes enduring, intolerable suffering,” the statement says. After being pushed through the House of Commons in an effort to meet the court deadline, the Justin Trudeau government’s Bill C-14 was

held up in the Senate, with disagreements over assisted suicide for young people and those who are not terminally ill. The B.C. government notes the court decision refers only to doctors. The province is consulting professional organizations for nurses and pharmacists to clarify their legal situation in participating in assisted death. Medical assistance in dying requires the consent of two doctors “and the patient’s consistent expression of a desire for medical assistance

New citizen science progam will help researchers gain an understanding of wildlife movements along local highways

Submit ted

Anyone who has driven Highway 3 between Elko and Alberta has seen wildlife — lots of wildlife. If you’re lucky, they were alive. But we’ve all seen our share of dead wildlife too, and in the worst cases, experienced a wildlife-vehicle collision personally. It can feel like an inevitable side effect of highway use, but it doesn’t have to be. A new program, RoadWatchBC, is putting increased highway safety for both people and wildlife into the hands of anyone with a smartphone or a computer. RoadWatchBC is a new program created by Wildsight, the Miistakis Institute, the Western Transportation Institute, and the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative. RoadWatchBC is based on gathering information using citizen science—scientific research conducted primarily by regular citizens (and that means anyone reading this article). Anyone can participate in the program by simply signing up online, or by using the free smartphone app, or an online mapping tool to record wildlife sightings on or near highways. The smartphone app has a simple, user-friendly interface whereby participants can instantaneously log wildlife sightings near or crossing the highway. Participants also have the option to use an online mapping tool

professional standards, issued after the Carter v. Canada decision by the Supreme Court. One of the doctors is permitted to make the decision via video link. The doctor approving a lethal dose of medication must be present during the self-administration or delivery of the medication until death is confirmed. For doctors who object to assisting someone to die, the standards do not require a formal referral but are required to provide “an effective transfer of care” to another physician. PUBLIC NOTICE

TAKE NOTICE THAT The City of Kimberley is considering an amendment to the City of Kimberley Zoning Bylaw No. 1850. The amendment is proposed to allow for a mixed residenal-commercial building on the subject property at 77 Deer Park Avenue. Bylaw No. 2541 (Amendment No. 126, 2016 to Zoning Bylaw No. 1850) proposes to create a new “Downtown Mixed-use Zone: DMU-1” zone and to rezone the subject property from “Central Commercial Zone: C-1” to the new DMU-1 zone. The proposed intent of the DMU-1 zone is to accommodate commercial and mixed residenal-commercial uses to foster diversity and vitality in areas within, nearby or adjacent to the central downtown district. Schedule “A” to Bylaw No. 2541

Gaining an understanding of wildlife movements along the highway is an important first step in developing mitigation strategies that reduce vehicle– wildlife collisions and maintain connected wildlife populations. at a later time (since the app is designed to be used by passengers and not drivers). Drivers just need to remember when, where and what animal they saw near or crossing the highway. Using these methods, citizens are able to partner with scientists to determine where animals tend to cross the highway or be struck by vehicles. Gaining an understanding of wildlife movements along the highway is an important first step in developing mitigation strategies that reduce vehicle– wildlife collisions and maintain connected wildlife populations. Mitigation strategies include overpasses, underpasses, culverts, fencing and animal detection systems. These mitigation methods allows for a safe pathway for all forms of wildlife to migrate across high-

ways. The information on vehicles and wildlife “hotspots” gained from the RoadWatchBC program will be shared with the British Columbia Transportation Ministry to determine potential areas where wildlife mitigation can be applied. “Highway mitigation is often looked at as being expensive infrastructure, but if you look at the numbers this simply isn’t the case,” said Tracy Lee, the project manager for RoadWatchBC. “Once you have more than three deer collisions within one kilometer of road per year, it is less expensive to put in an underpass. By finding out where along the highways we have the most wildlife traffic and wildlife-vehicle collisions, we can determine where mitigation will be the most successful and economic. RoadWatchBC can help us do that.”

“Focusing highway mitigation efforts in these areas could improve motorist safety, reduce wildlife mortalities, improve habitat linkage and animal movements across Highway 3 and be cost effective,” said Beth Millions, the local RoadWatchBC coordinator for the Elk Valley. “Highway mitigation is both good for people and good for wildlife.” RoadWatchBC is holding a project launch on June 22nd at 6:00 pm at the Art Station in Fernie. Attendees can view a short film on highway mitigation, learn more about the program, test-drive the apps and tools, and more. For more information on the project, please go to www.roadwatchbc.ca or download the app from the App Store or the Google Play store.

The proposed bylaw 2541 applies to the land legally described as Lot 24, Block 11, District Lot 1358 Kootenay District, Plan 1462, PID 015-788-288, civically idened as 77 Deer Park Avenue and shown in heavy outline and shaded on the above map. A Public Hearing for bylaw 2541 will be held on Monday, June 13, 2016 at 7:00 pm in the Council Chamber at City Hall, 340 Spokane Street, Kimberley, BC. If you believe that your interest in property is affected by the proposed bylaw, you may: a. Submit wrien presentaons to City Hall prior to the hearing, or b. Submit wrien and/or verbal presentaons at the hearing. You may inspect the proposed amending bylaws and the supporng documentaon at City Hall, 340 Spokane Street, Kimberley, BC, from 8:30 am to 4:45 pm weekdays unl the date of the hearing.
