Local Runner Competes at High School Provincials Local distance runner Sydney Wilson represented Selkirk Secondary recently at the High School Provincial Championships in Nanaimo. She finished 13th in the 1500 m in a personal best time of 5:11.72 and 12th in the 3000 m in a time of 11:59.08. Her 1500m time was an improvement of 14 seconds on her previous best. Unfortunately, in the 3000 m, she lost a shoe early in the race and had to complete the majority of the race with just a single shoe. Sydney will be representing the Kootenay Region at the upcoming BC Games in Abbotsford where she will be running the 800 m, 1200 m, and 2000 m.

Police are investigating a crash on highway 95A, Saturday (June 18) where alcohol is likely a factor. The vehicle left the highway south of Kimberley around 5:15 p.m., rolled and came to rest near the Northstar Rails to Trails. Just prior to the crash police had received calls about an erratic driver. Officers from both Cranbrook and Kimberley were patrolling for the vehicle when the crash was reported. Allegedly

the suspect vehicle almost hit another vehicle just prior to going off the highway. Several officers attended the scene along with BC Ambulance and Kimberley Fire Dept Highway Rescue. The driver was transported to East Kootenay Regional Hospital, the extent of his injuries are unknown but not believed to be serious. An impaired driving investigation is being conducted. Fortunately no other vehicles were involved and the driver was the only occupant. Charges are pending.

Thanks to a successful turtle overwintering pilot program this past winter, biologists with VAST Resource Solutions are currently undertaking a turtle capture and relocation program for Idlewild Lake. In October 2015, three adult turtles were captured, radio tagged and relocated to Kettle Lake as part of the pilot relocation project. All turtles overwintered successfully and this location will now be used as a permanent relocation for the remaining turtles. “Nearby waterbodies were assessed for habitat suitability and the presence of existing turtle populations,” says Leigh Anne Isaac, Senior Wildlife Biologist with VAST. “Our guidance was to relocate turtles in suitable areas with either nonexistent or small populations of tur-

City take such wellplanned and comprehensive actions to ensure the impact to Idlewild turtles are minimized,” says Isaac. The City engaged VAST to develop and implement the relocation plan for the Western Painted Turtle population at Idlewild Lake. All three agencies worked together to develop an approved plan for the full relocation, which started in earnest in May this year. To date a total of 99 turtles, including some hatchlings have been captured and relocated. Painted Turtles are remarkable in that eggs laid at this time of year hatch in the fall, but the young remain in the underground nest over winter and are able to withstand freezing. The next spring, the tooniesized baby turtles emerge from the nest and make their way to the water. “The relocation of the turtles in one part of a larger puzzle,” says Chris New, Director of Leisure Services for the City of Cranbrook. “The end result is the preservation of Idlewild Lake and improvement to numerous recreational opportunities for park visitors.” Monitoring for additional turtles will continue in Idlewild Lake into the drawdown period later this summer. The City has also installed structures to enhance turtle basking habitat at Kettle Lake and will be augmenting existing nesting habitat adjacent to their new home. Work on replacing Idlewild Dam is tentatively expected to begin in late July.

Big news out of the deep past and the present are continuing to put Cranbrook on the paleontological map. Wednesday evening, June 15, at the Cranbrook History Centre, at the CHC’s ongoing lecture series on the East Kootenay’s fossil heritage, two major announcements were made: One concerning the local discovery of an important discovery of a Triassic fossil site near Cranbrook. It was also announced Wednesday that the CHC has secured funding to develop the Centre’s new paleontology gallery and research lab. CHC Executive Director Char Murray is hoping this new facility — which will be key to the area’s growing importance as a fossil site — will be open next year. The Wednesday meeting at the CHC featured a presentation by Dr. Robert Gaines, a researcher from Pomona College, Clarement California. Dr. Gaines along with research partner, Dr. Jean-Bernard Caron, are discoverers of the Kootenay National Park-Marble Canyon deposits, which is an extension of the Burgess Shale. The series presented by the CHC is proving to be a popular draw. Murray said about 120 people turned out to take in Dr. Gaines’s lecture and to honour amateur paleontologist and local prospector Michel Plourde, who discovered the marine fossil site. Plourde was told by a friend some 20 years ago, about a remote East Kootenay mountain location with fossil fish. Over the next decade, on free weekends, Michel would hike all day, sleep in the mountains and pack out big rocks in order to collect the Triassic-era fossils. Fossil creatures he discovered so far include several different species of fish and an early marine reptile. Michel was concerned about the protection of the fossils and the fossil site itself, so he stacked up the fossils in his shed until he could be assured of their protection. Mr. Plourde didn’t want to see the collection whisked away to a distant location as has happened with many of the important East Kootenay discoveries. The advent of the natural history fossil exhibit at the Cranbrook History Centre has prompted Plourde to donate what may be likely one of the most significant private fossil donations in B.C. history. He has

In addition to the generous business prize donations, Mark Creek Market provides hot dogs and buns for the barbecue and Kimberley Sausage and Meats provides the pulled pork. Need for the Food Bank continues in Kimberley and food donations are down at the moment. In the month of May, 72 hampers were given out.

A Triassic era fish discovered locally by Michel Plourde will now reside at the Cranbrook History Centre. donated his entire collection to the CHC which will, catalogue, preserve and curate and eventually display the specimens in the new gallery. Wednesday evening, Cranbrook Mayor Lee Pratt presented Plourde with a plaque, recognizing his contribution. CHC Director Guy Santucci described the international significance of the specimens. “The Triassic age lasted from 251 – 199 million years ago,” he said. “Triassic fish are rare and apart. British Columbia is now poised to be on the world-wide forefront of these important fossils. “The specimen’s ancestors survived following the great Permian extinction which wiped out 95 per cent of all life on earth,” Santucci said. “This is B.C.’s second site producing Triassic fish, the first being Wapiti Lake in northern B.C.” The paleontological gallery and research is being helped into being by a Columbia Basin Trust grant $20,000 through the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance. The City of Cranbrook also gave $10,000 towards the project, and the Cranbrook Archives, Museum And Landmarks Society (CAMAL), which oversees the History Centre, has kicked in $10,000. In conjunction with a world
class fossil display that includes very unique local trilobite specimens, the CHC is examining provisioning of laboratory and research space, so that many more researchers will be attracted to the area and conduct studies on other material available in the Kootenays. The Cranbrook History Centre is generating public interest and momentum in local fossil heritage by inviting a number of world renowned researchers, such as Gaines, to speak of the local fossils and work that has been done in the East Kootenay region. Jean Bernard Caron of the Royal Ontario Museum, and Gaines’ Burgess Shale colleague, will be at the next public lecture, July21. Murray said specifically coming to talk about the Eager Formation out at Fort Steele, renowned for its trilobite fossil bed. The importance of the Eager Formation as a fossil site is perhaps yet to be fully realized. “We all know about the Burgess Shale,” Murray said. “But the Eager Formation is 8 million years older than the Burgess Shale. “A large part of Cranbrook’s history is these fossil beds,” she added. “People have been digging fossils for a long time in this area.”

Merchandise will be allowed on Platzl sidewalks C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Kimberley Chamber of Commerce Manager Mike Guarnery visited City Council last week to update them on discussions he had with city staff and downtown businesses regarding a fee for placing merchandise on the sidewalks in front of stores. The issue came about as the city goes through a process of updating policies, says Mayor Don McCormick. Businesses had been displaying merchandise outside their stores for
years but without any guidelines around access, safety and insurance. Through consultations with staff and business, Guarnery told Council an agreement had been reached. Merchandise outside did add an attraction to a business, he said. “We propose that a business may display products on the immediate sidewalk outside their business as long as they don’t impede egress, that there is space maintained for passage and there is nothing too big. The city
would be added to insurance.” A nominal fee of $1 would be charged. Guarnery said this was a different issue than fees for outdoor patios for restaurants, though he suggested phasing in fees for patios as well. Coun. Darryl Oakley said he didn’t much like the patio fees either and at some time it needed to be discussed, he said. “They are already paying commercial taxes. I think it’s frustrating for business.” “Patios are seen as an extension of the
square footage of a restaurant while merchandise isn’t being sold outside,” McCormick argued. “To some degree,”
Oakley said. “But you could argue merchandise is being sold outside too. I just find it unfortunate for restaurant owners.”
McCormick said Council appreciated the Chamber advocacy on the matter.

McKim Students helping refugees make Kimberley home FOR THE BULLE TIN
The Grade 5 students at McKim Middle School recently held a bake sale to support the Kimberley Refugee Resettlement Group (KRRG). Sixty-nine students contributed $335.50 bringing the KRRG total to $28,000. Their sale of delicious treats included vanilla and gluten-free cupcakes, rice crispie squares, and chocolate-dipped strawberries. Before the bake sale, they watched videos on the KRRG website (kimberleyrefugees. ca) explaining why local residents are supporting refugee families coming to Kimberley. Grade 5 teacher Lori Mitchell commented, “We learned about immigration in Canada through literature and stories, from a historical perspective, including the Underground Railway, Vietnamese and Chinese immigrants. It
was a wonderful opportunity to teach our local grade five students about such a worthy cause that was so closely connected to their Social Studies unit on Immigration. I am so glad they were able to take part in a small way.” The students also answered the question, ‘What is a refugee?’ and practised writing the Canadian Citizenship Test. “It was hard! And I didn’t pass!” exclaimed one of the students. How did the students find out about KRRG? Harrison said, “I got the gist of it at home,” while Kate and Tristyn heard from their parents and at school. Cate stated, “I heard about it from my Grandpa,” pointing to Colin MacKenzie. MacKenzie shared with the students his personal story of meeting new refugee families while in Lethbridge, Alberta, recently. “One of the children, your age (10-11 years old), was
our interpreter since I didn’t speak Arabic and the family’s father did not speak English.” KRRG is grateful to the community for its continuing support and invites new volunteers to participate and become part of making Kimberley “a good place to be welcoming.” There are two opportunities on Thursday, June 23 to join KRRG – in the morning at a general meeting from 10:00am to noon at All Saints Anglican Church Hall (360 Leadenhall Street, Kimberley) and in the evening 5:00-7:30pm at the Kimberley Farmers’ Market (Howard Street). Cranbrook’s Youth Ambassadors for the coming year were chosen at the 2016 Youth Ambassador Pageant held Friday, June 17, at the Key City Theatre. Jelena Jensen was named 2016 Sam Steele Sweetheart, and Brianna McWhirter Sam Steele Princess. Official duties begin at once, with the Ambassadors and fellow candidates taking part in the Sam Steele Days parade Saturday. Other candidates included Shanae Thompson, Morgan Mitchell, Amber Wavrecan, Candice Ericksen, Serena Stuart, and Amanda Carter. Emcees for the evening were Brianna Kennedy, herself a former Youth Ambassador, and Jason Wheeldon. Very much in the house were 2015 Ambassadors, Sweetheart Kelsey Ackert and Princess Sarah Ferguson. The candidates began the evening by performing a striking rhythmic dance routine — sans music — according to the theme of the Sam Steele Days weekend “Salute the Boots,” a tribute to armed forces, veter-
ans, the Legion, police and emergency personnel. The Speech and Talent presentation by the candidates followed, then the modelling of the individual Sam Steele dresses and the “impromptu question.” Visiting royalty and guests from Penticton, Castlegar Osoyoos, Trail and Whitefish gave greetings to the candidates and community, and then the awards presentation followed. • People’s Choice Award went to Jelena Jensen. • Toastmaster Public Speaking award — Shanae Thompson. • The Talent Award — Jelena Jensen. • Community Awareness Award — Jelena Jensen. The Princess and Sweetheart were then announced, and crowned — with Sarah Ferguson passing the crown to McWhirter and Kelsey Ackert the Crown to Jensen. The Townsman congratulates all candidates, and offers best wishes to Jensen and McWhirter for the coming year.

Call 250-919-2348 or email WaterSmart@cranbrook. ca to book your FREE appointment today! Check your taps, hoses, nozzles, water pumps, sprinklers and irrigation systems for leaks and faulty valves. Broken pipes underground can cause water to pool and grass to go wet and spongy. Sign up for your FREE irrigation audit. Visit our website or email watersmart@cranbrook.ca to book your appointment.
Owners of homes and properties that are not conscious of the risk, not only pose a threat to their properties, but also threaten neighbours and emergency services personnel. The reality is that if you don’t take basic steps to minimize the wildfire risk around your home or property, emergency services will focus their response on properties they can save — the rest will have to fend for themselves. There are plenty of public education tools available to provide advice on wildfire preparedness for individuals and homeowners, which can teach how to adapt to living with the threat of wildfire and how to work with your community and your neighbours to prevent loss of life and property in the event of a wildfire. If you have questions about techniques, materials, and procedures, contact Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services, provincial forestry personnel or local landscaping groups. You can also visit http://bcwildfire.ca/Prevention/ firesmart.htm or http://cranbrook.ca/our-city/citydepartments/fire-and-emergency-services/firesmart/ for plenty of great information to help you prepare. Check the soil under your lawn. If it’s sandy or less than 15cms deep, it’s likely using too much water. PERSONAL FLUSHABLE WIPES – A SEWER SYSTEM NO-NO They’re billed as a fresh, clean alternative to toilet paper — but waste-water utilities across Canada including here in Cranbrook say personal wipes are creating sewage clogs. Consumer Reports tested several brands of wipes labelled flushable and found that while toilet paper broke down after about eight seconds, the wipes showed no sign of disintegrating after 30 minutes in a toilet-flushing simulator. Residents may consider it an out-of-sight, out-of-mind situation. People expect to flush things down the toilet and then don’t want to think about it anymore. While those personal wipes may swirl down the toilet with ease, experts say they don’t disintegrate, creating serious problems as they work their way through aging sewage systems on their way to treatment plants. If you do use these personal wipes, simply throw them in your household garbage and don’t flush them. Please don’t contribute to a growing problem.

Brexit: The Long, Loud Silence
P
arliament met in London Monday, so that MPs of every party could express their horror and disgust at the murder last Thursday of their colleague Jo Cox, MP for Batley and Spen in West Yorkshire. And on Monday everybody did, including the leaders of the Brexit campaign, Boris Johnson and Michael Gove. But here’s the odd thing: up to that point, the Brexit leaders had said nothing about it. Nothing. Not a word, for more than three days. The political campaign for the referendum next Thursday on Britain’s continued membership in the European Union was immediately suspended for two days after Cox’s murder, but other politicians didn’t go to ground like Johnson, Gove and their friends. Prime Minister David Cameron, the leader of Johnson and Gove’s own Conservative Party, Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, and a host of their fellow members of parliament gathered in Parliament Square on Friday to light candles and lay flowers in tribute to the slain MP, but the Brexit leaders were conspicuous by their absence. Cameron, Corbyn and many other senior politicians went on TV to condemn what had happened, but Johnson, Gove and their rather embarrassing ally Nigel Farage, the leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), did not (and you may be sure that they were asked to — that’s what journalists do). They simply vanished from public view, without so much as a ritual statement that their “thoughts and prayers” were with Jo Cox’s family. There are only two possible explanations for this curious non-event. One is that space aliens abducted Johnson, Gove and Farage on Thursday for their usual nefarious purposes, and returned them to
Earth on Sunday with their memories wiped clean of anal probes (for otherwise they would surely have mentioned it). The other is that their media advisers told them that the only safe course was to say nothing. The Brexiteers were in a difficult position, because Jo Cox was a high-profile campaigner for Remain, the campaign urging Britons to stay in the EU, and the man who killed her, Tommy Mair, was clearly of the opposite persuasion. As he shot and stabbed her, according to eyewitnesses, he was Gwynne shouting “Britain first” or “Put Britain first”. Dyer His motive became even clearer on Saturday, when he was brought before a judge to be charged. Asked to state his name, he replied that it is “Death to Traitors, Freedom for Britain.” The second half of this slogan is, of course, at the heart of the “Leave” campaign’s argument for Brexit. Obviously Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and Nigel Farage knew nothing about Mair’s intentions, nor approved of them in any way. But people could reasonably argue that the increasingly nasty tone of the “Leave” campaign may have served as a trigger for Mair’s crime. In the early stages of the campaign the debate was mostly about the relative economic advantages of leaving or staying in the EU, but the “Leave” side clearly lost that argument, and shifted the debate instead onto the hot-button topic of immigration. This involved a good deal of lying, like the ridiculous Leave claim that Turkey was shortly going to become an EU member, giving 70 million Turks the right to move to Britain. (Turkey has no realistic chance of becoming an EU member in the foreseeable future, and if it ever did fulfill the entrance requirements Britain could
simply veto it.) The dog-whistle racism of Leave’s anti-immigration campaign was at its worst in a poster that UKIP’s Nigel Farage unveiled just two hours before Cox was murdered, showing an endless column of young men of Middle Eastern appearance marching into Europe and captioned “Breaking Point”. In other words, quit the EU or Britain too will be drowned in a sea of Muslim fake refugees. The poster was immediately condemned even by Farage’s allies (Michael Gove said he “shuddered” when he saw it) — but Gove did NOT go on to say that Middle Eastern refugees who are let in by other EU countries do not gain the right to enter Britain. To admit that would undermine the whole anti-immigrant strategy of the Leave campaign. That’s something Gove didn’t want to be questioned on. All the more did he not want to be questioned on possible causal links between the Leave campaign’s general strategy of claiming that the British people are enslaved by faceless “EU bureaucrats in Brussels” and Mair’s cry of “Freedom for Britain”. Neither did any of his Leave colleagues. So the Brexit leaders took their media managers’ advice and hid themselves away after the assassination of Jo Cox. When Tommy Mair gave his name as “Death to Traitors, Freedom for Britain” in court on Saturday, they hid for another day, fearing guilt by association. Now they are back out in the open, hoping nobody noticed their absence. And maybe they didn’t, because the British media certainly abstained from comment on it. But it is also possible that quite a few ordinary voters did notice it, and drew their own conclusions from it. We’ll find out on Friday. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist published in 45 countries.

Du Toit claims Glencoe Invitational crown in Calgary Kimberley golfer goes wire to wire, winning prestigious tournament at esteemed Glencoe Golf & Country Club
Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
When his NCAA golf season came to a disappointing end in early June, Jared du Toit said he was ready to sharpen his focus, intent not on simply contending, but instead on stocking his trophy shelf. If this past weekend is any indication, the Kimberley product — Canada’s top-ranked amateur men’s golfer — is doing exactly what he set out to do. The 21-year-old Arizona State Sun Devils’ star etched his name in history alongside the likes of Canadian pros Graham DeLaet and Wes Heffernan by going wire to wire and claiming the prestigious Glencoe Invitational at Calgary’s Glencoe Golf & Country Club Sunday. Opening the tournament with a two-under 70, du Toit — who sits 85th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings — held the lead at the conclusion of the first round and never looked back. He followed up with back-to-back 74s, finishing the 54-hole venture at two-over par (218), good enough for a two-stroke victory over runner-up Emmett Oh
(four-over, 220) of Calgary’s Bearspaw Country Club. Du Toit is calling the Glencoe Golf & Country Club his home course this summer, making him the first host-club winner of the esteemed event since Vince Ramscar won the title in 1995.
DeLaet, 34, is one of Canada’s most recognized PGA professionals. He won the the Glencoe Invitational in 2005 before turning pro in 2007 and eventually winning three Canadian PGA Tour events, including the ATB Financial Classic in 2009. Heffernan, 39, has won three events on the Canadian PGA Tour since turning pro in 2000. He won the Glencoe Invitational in 1999. With a triumphant showing at the 7,505yard, par-72 Forest track at the Glencoe Golf & Country Club, du Toit added a Crystal Keeper Trophy to his cabinet, while also earning exemption into a trio of high-end tournaments
throughout the rest of the summer. The Glencoe win provided du Toit with exemption into the final qualifying round for the RBC Canadian Open (July 18 to 24 at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont.), exemption into the ATB Financial Classic (Aug. 8 to 14 at Country Hills Golf Club in Calgary) and finally, exemption into the Canadian Men’s Amateur (Aug. 8 to 11 at The Royal Ottawa Golf Club and Eagle Creek Golf Club in Gatineau, Que.). For du Toit, the winning effort comes on the heels of another strong showing one week prior in Pittsford, N.Y. Competing at the Monroe Invitational at the 6,898-yard Monroe Golf Club, du Toit came into the clubhouse at two-over through 72 holes of action (71-7367-71) to finish with a share of third place. The Glencoe Invitational was established in 1992, though took a three-year hiatus from 2012 to 2014 as the The Forest underwent extensive restoration. Next on the calendar, du Toit has been granted a sponsor’s exemption into the SIGA Dakota Dunes Open, set to

each and every one of them for their interest in our event. It is a difficult task, but we are very pleased with the individuals we selected.” Joining du Toit on sponsor’s exemption are James Love (Calgary), Lucas Kim (Toronto), Hugo Leon (Santiago, Chile), Jerry Christiansen (La Ronge, Sask.), Dakota Cameron (Okemasis First Nation), William Kropp (Indianapolis) and Blair Hamilton (Burlington, Ont.).
The SIGA Dakota Dunes Open is a PGA Tour Canada event and will be the first pro tournament of du Toit’s young career. The SIGA Dakota Dunes Open began Monday, June 20, with the Graham Slam Celebrity Pro-Am, hosted by the Graham & Ruby DeLaet Foundation, in an effort to raise funds to improve children’s health and wellness in Saskatchewan. The charity event wraps up
Tuesday, with practice rounds scheduled for Wednesday. The first round of the SIGA Dakota Dunes Open gets underway Thursday, with the championship round taking place Sunday, June 26. The prize purse is set at $175,000, with the winner taking $31,500. Du Toit was unavailable for comment prior to print deadline Monday.
Kimberley native Schacher commits to University of Regina Former Western Hockey League defenceman headed for CIS following successful junior career
Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
After a successful journey hockey career that took him from Victoria to Saskatoon, before finishing in Drumheller, Kimberley native Isaac Schacher is headed back to Saskatchewan, committing his services to the University of Regina Cougars men’s hockey team Monday afternoon. “Isaac played a huge role as a leader for the Dragons last season,” said Brian Curran, head coach and general manager of the Drumheller Dragons, in a team release. “He will no doubt play a leading role at the collegiate level as well. He is a skilled defence-
man who is patient with the puck and sees the ice well. “I would like to congratulate him on his commitment and wish him all the best next season and beyond.” Schacher, a 20-year-old defenceman, enjoyed a 139game Western Hockey League career, splitting time with the Victoria Royals, Regina Pats and Saskatoon Blades after getting started with his hometown Dynamiters of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. Without a WHL suitor for the 2015-16 campaign, the 6-foot-4, 214-
pound Schacher rounded out his junior hockey career in the Alberta Junior Hockey League this past season, playing 52 games with the Drumheller Dragons. According to a Dragons news release, Schacher is expected to study business while also suiting up for the men’s hockey program. The Cougars men’s hockey program features a number of Kimberley and Cranbrook connections, leaving Schacher surrounded by many names familiar to the East Kootenay. The Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS)
squad features a number of former Kootenay Ice players, including forward Zach McPhee (2012-13 to 2013-14) and defencemen Landon Peel (2012-13 to 201314) and Landon Cross (2013-14). To top it off, the Cougars are coached by former Ice assistant coach Todd Johnson (2010-11 to 2011-12). In 100 KIJHL games with the Dynamiters, Schacher registered 18 goals and 63 points before moving on to collect two goals and 18 points in 139 WHL games. Serving as an alternate captain for the Dragons in his final year of junior, Schacher posted nine goals and 29 points in 52 contests.

Byram inks WHL player agreement with Giants Cranbrook-born defenceman opts for Western Hockey League, signs with Vancouver Giants on Friday
Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
At the end of the day, Bowen Byram decided the Western Hockey League route was the one for him after all. Friday, the Vancouver Giants announced they had signed the Cranbrook native and third-overall selection from the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft to a standard player agreement. “I’m really excited here right now,” Byram told VancouverGiants. com on Friday. “It was pretty surreal getting flown out here [Thursday] night. I’m really excited to get things going with the Giants and for it to be for real now. “I’ve been looking forward to this my whole life, basically my whole hockey career and I’m just excited to get it going and being a WHL player, hopefully, in a couple years.” There was a period of time where it wasn’t to-
tally clear as to whether or not Byram was going to settle on the WHL route for the next step in his hockey career.
On May 12, Bowen’s father Shawn — himself a veteran of 178 WHL regular season games — conveyed to The Townsman that the family was still considering all of its options when it came to determining the best choice for Bowen, both in life and in hockey. But little more than a month later, Bowen Byram signed on the dotted line with the Giants, which in many ways, comes as no surprise, considering the excitement that could be heard from the 15-year-old defenceman on draft day.
“It’s an obvious honour,” Byram told The Townsman on May 5 after being drafted by the Giants. “It’s a great organization. I was pretty happy when I saw my name come up there.” In Byram, the Giants get a stud defenceman who, by all accounts, can play at both ends of the rink, bringing an enviable combination of size, skill and skating ability to the ice. “The Vancouver Giants are honoured to have Bowen and his family joining our organization,” said Glen Hanlon, general manager of the Giants, in a team release. “In signing Bowen, we add an impactful number-one defenceman, which is something that all teams look for. Bowen plays an uptempo game and will bring speed and skill to our roster.” Standing six feet tall and weighing in at 163 pounds, Byram dominated the Alberta Major

Cranbrook native Bowen Byram (above) was in Vancouver to sign a WHL standard player agreement with the Giants on Friday. Bantam Hockey League (AMBHL) in 2015-16, registering 22 goals and 59 points in 34 games with the Lethbridge Golden Hawks, placing him as the highest-scoring defenceman in the league. Byram also helped the Golden Hawks put forth a bronze-medal performance at the 2016 Western Canadian Bantam AAA Championship after claiming the AMBHL crown. “He’s going to be a
team leader for us,” Jason Ripplinger, director of player personnel with the Vancouver Giants, told The Townsman at the bantam draft. “As the years go on, he’s going to be able to run our power play. We’re looking at him as a Joe Ricketts-Type of player, not comparing the two, but playing the 30 to 35 minutes a game. When you can get a guy on the ice like that playing against the best players, it gives you a
good chance to win.” The Giants are in desperate need of that type of impact player after finishing the 201516 WHL campaign second to last and missing out on the playoffs with a record of 23-40-5-4. Byram is expected to attend Giants camp this fall, but is only eligible to play five WHL games as a 15-year-old this coming season. He can suit up for the Giants on a full-time basis as early as the 2017-18 season.
Of the top three players selected at the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft, Byram was the last to sign with his respective club. Kirby Dach, second-overall pick of the Saskatoon Blades, put pen to paper with his new club on May 10. Peyton Krebs, the first-overall selection at the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft, inked his standard player agreement with the Kootenay Ice on June 1.
LeBron James named MVP as Cavaliers win NBA championship ASSOCIATED PRESS
OAKLAND, Calif. LeBron James is a champion again, and the NBA Finals MVP again. By unanimous vote, James was selected as MVP of the title series, accepting his trophy from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver after Cleveland beat Golden State 93-89 in Game 7 on Sunday night. “This is what I came back for,” James said. James was overcome by emotion after the final horn. He’s the finals MVP for the third time, also winning in
2012 and 2013 when he was a member of the Miami Heat. “Best player on the planet,” Cavs teammate Kyrie Irving said.
James became the third player to have a triple-double in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, joining Jerry West in 1969 and James Worthy in 1988. He had 27 points,
11 rebounds and 11 assists in the clincher, capping a series where the Cavaliers became the
first team to successfully overcome a 3-1 deficit in the finals. “You see his basketball talent, the way he
can control a game,” Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue said. “But the reason why he deserves this is because he has a great heart ... and great things happen to great people.” James is now 4-2 alltime in Game 7s, including 2-0 when those ultimate games come in the NBA Finals.

Features Tidal generator trial for Bay of Fundy Adina Bresge Canadian Press
HALIFAX - Nova Scotia’s environment minister has cleared the way for the installation of two giant turbines in the Bay of Fundy for tidal power research, weeks after halting the project to gather more information about its environmental impact. Margaret Miller announced her approval Monday of the monitoring plan drawn up by the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE) and Cape Sharp Tidal Venture. After consulting with concerned fishermen and her counterparts at the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Miller said she is satisfied enough with the plan to test the waters of tidal power technology. “This is a demonstra-
tion project,” she told reporters on Monday. “There is no place like the Bay of Fundy, so putting these turbines in the water at this point we will be collecting data from now on.” Cape Sharp’s fivestorey-high turbines, destined for the Minas Passage, are expected to generate enough electricity to power 1,000 homes. The company, a partnership of OpenHydro and Emera, is one of several who plan to test different turbine technology in the Bay of Fundy. The plan to install the mammoth turbines in the passage has faced strong opposition from the Bay of Fundy Inshore Fishermen’s Association, which contends that instream tidal turbines can’t be made safe for the ecosystem.
Black bear tears apart car in West Vancouver C anadian Press
VANCOUVER - Police in West Vancouver have released photos of a car that they believe was torn apart by a black bear this weekend. The photos show the rear passenger door of the car ripped back, its frame bent, side airbags trashed and seats shredded. The attack was reported Sunday at a home in the upscale British Properties, and officers estimate dam-
age at about $10,000. Const. Jeff Palmer says police found hair and claw marks at the scene and are certain a black bear sniffed out a large amount of food that was left in the sedan overnight. The neighbourhood backs onto the forests of the North Shore mountains and Palmer says it’s not the first time vehicles in the area have been damaged by bears intent on grabbing a snack.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Allow your innate creativity and optimism to emerge. Changes that have come forward might no longer be valid, and you will need to make yet another adjustment. You could be hesitant to pursue this course of action, but you will, out of necessity. Tonight: All smiles. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Optimism is the name of the game. Be willing to back off in order to gain a deeper perspective. Imagine what it is like to be someone else. Consider a trip where you might gain a lot of knowledge and cultural understanding. Tonight: Be surrounded by great music. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You could be in the position of negotiating an important agreement, yet might have difficulty understanding what someone wants. This person seems to be distracted, jumping from topic to topic. Be less indulgent; the results will be better. Tonight: Let
it all hang out. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Reach out to someone at a distance. Your conversation with this person will brighten your mood. Ask yourself what you really understand about others before making any judgments. Listen to where they are coming from. Tonight: Go with a loved one’s suggestion or choice. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Others generally see you as someone who is flamboyant, but right below the surface lies a pragmatic attitude. Let this trait emerge, and you will be able to move forward with a project or complete what you are doing quickly and efficiently. Tonight: Off to the gym! VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Only you can complete a project in the exact way you want. Having expectations otherwise might not be realistic; no one can visualize what you are seeing, no matter how well you can describe the desired results. Take the lead here. Tonight: Give up being tame for now. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You seem to be very distracted by a recent idea or dream you have had. Focusing on mundane details might be close to impossible. It could take a mini-revolution, an upset boss or an intense situation to ground you. Tonight: If you want, share your thoughts with a loved one. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) How you see a personal situation could change after having a conversation with someone who has a way of opening your mind to even better ideas. Be grateful for this person. Share your thoughts and feelings, and accept his or her feedback. Tonight: Take action now! SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Your concern over a financial matter could force you to make a decision that you have been resisting. Consider your alternatives; one of which might be to find someone who has some expertise in this matter. A surprise facilitates your day. Tonight: Be aware of a loved one’s needs. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You might decide to take off for the rest of the day. In your need
for change, you could stop at a travel agency or check out a new housing project. Don’t be surprised by others’ reactions when you explain what you did. Tonight: Seriously consider a change of pace. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Understand what you expect from someone in a certain situation. Try to be more realistic, at least about this person, and you are less likely to feel upset. Though initially this might be hard to do, it ultimately is likely to make you a happier person. Tonight: Take some personal time. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Zero in on your priorities, and you will be delighted by what you get done. You might convince a dear friend to make an adjustment that will make both of you much more content. Recognize how much trust you are receiving from others. Tonight: Where the fun is. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My husband is in hospice care and I have a caregiver come once a week to give me a break. I truly appreciate her help and pay her an hourly rate. The problem is, the caregiver has dogs and smells like it. I am allergic to dogs, and her scent gives me a headache as soon as I return home, and it continues the following day. The dog scent is in my furniture, around my husband and all over the house. How do I approach this without hurting her feelings? I don’t think she is aware of her dog odor. -- Sensitive Nose Dear Sensitive: You have to tell the caregiver that you can smell the dog in your house. Chances are, she is so accustomed to the odor that she doesn’t realize how potent it is. Say that you are very sensitive and ask whether she might consider showering and washing her hair on the days when she comes to your home, and also wearing freshly laundered clothing. (Or she could keep a set of clothes at your house that she can change into.) That might make enough of a difference for you to tolerate it. If she objects, or if nothing changes, it may be time to find another caregiver. Someone who causes you to have a headache for an entire day is not giving you the kind of respite you need. We know you like her, but this is a paid position and you should find an employee who fits all of your requirements. Dear Annie: You printed a letter from “Better Safe than Sorry,” who said all the guys she meets at work are “creepy” and constantly inappropriate. You said she might want to reconsider her work environment. Feminists will not likely appreciate my comments. In addition to her work environment, I would also recommend that the writer look in the mirror and review her appearance, and then consider her words and mannerisms when engaging with these men. She may unintentionally be encouraging inappropriate behavior with the message she is sending these “creepy” men. I am 67 years old and female. I am continually amazed at how many women are offended by men who respond to the woman’s overtly sexual communication. I am not excusing inappropriate behavior on the part of any man, but I am reminding women that messages are conveyed through what you say, how you say it and your body language. When you get an inappropriate response, review the message you are giving from the perspective of the recipient. -- Watch Yourself Dear Watch: Obviously, if a woman is wearing a blouse cut down to her navel and touching a man provocatively while she coos in his ear, she is creating a sexually charged conversation and inviting a similar response. Women cannot do that and then blame the man for reacting. And by the way, this can happen to men, also. Some women misinterpret a guy’s friendliness as flirting, and think he’s more interested than is warranted. And if it happens a lot, those men may need to dial it back. A great many men and women don’t realize how they come across, and any unwanted attention that happens too frequently should be looked into. But let’s face it -- too many men think all women are fair game regardless of the circumstances. Angela DeSantis January 1, 1920 – June 16, 2016 We wish to announce the peaceful passing of a true matriarch, Angela DeSantis. She was 96 years old. Angela was born in Amato, Catanzaro, Italy and was the 2nd eldest of 7 children. In 1940, her and Antonio DeSantis were married in Amato, Italy. They immigrated to Edmonton, Alberta in 1953 to raise their two daughters, Tina and Lina. In 1972, Angela and Antonio moved to Cranbrook, BC where their daughters were residing. Angela was a custodian at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce until her retirement. Angela’s passion was gardening and cooking for whomever came to visit. She had many massive and productive fruit trees that were started from seeds randomly thrown in her yard. The neighbours in the area of Parkland Middle School always admired her magnificent vegetable garden. Angela will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by her daughters, Tina (Gus) Fiorentino and Lina (Angelo) Fiorentino as well as three sisters Concetta Masi (Kelowna); Carmela Chiodo (Edmonton); and Ettilia Abuisi (Torino, Italy). She is also survived by her 6 grandchildren Jim (Connie) Fiorentino; Sandie (Mike) Anderson; Christine (Dave) Claypool; Johnny (Adrianne) Fiorentino; Julie (Mike) Fiorentino and Robbie (Norrie) Fiorentino. Her long and fulfilling life provided many memories with 12 greatgrandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Angela was preceded in death by her husband Antonio; brothers Gaetano and Alessandro; sister Maria and great-grandson Joshua Anderson. We sincerely thank her physician, Dr. Kevin McIver. His genuine compassion, guidance and care has left an indelible mark on our hearts. Thank you to the wonderful nurses on the 3rd floor at the hospital. They took such good care of her this past month. We also wish to thank the staff at Joseph Creek Village for making the last years of her life so enjoyable. A special thank you to her neighbor, Rosa Caccavo, for faithfully visiting Angela and helping her adjust to assisted living.

The team’s goals were to raise awareness of the fashions that are available at the Salvation Army and to collect food, clothing and money donations for the Salvation Army. All T.M. The Garden Club volunteers: Victoria Robinson, Janice Pelletier and April Lund have removed old dead bushes and trees and rebuilt the front beds and created two separate beds in the circle drive. The Garden Club uses the money from its Open Garden Day every year to put back into the community to improve the look of our community. Thanks to Brenna Baker and her staff at the SPCA for keeping the new landscaping well-watered.

Why conserve water? By reducing our water usage we decrease the amount of demand strain experienced by our water distribution infrastructure which extends its life and reduces maintenance cost. Additionally it reduces the need for construction of new supply and distribution evidently saving the community money. Most importantly we have to remember that water is a limited resource so we must conserve it insuring the permanence of a future supply. The City of Kimberley has a water consumption rate greater than the B.C. and Canadian average. While The City of Kimberley is committed to reducing water use through system improvements and wise water practices, it is essential that residents engage themselves in the Water Smart Initiative by making simple changes to both indoor and outdoor water use practices.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BLACK PRESS COMMUNITY NEWS MEDIA
on a new business venture. Linda grew up on an orchard and hobby farm and recognizes the value of locally made, baked and grown products. McVetty attributes the success of the market to the civic-minded community. “Its not just because the food is fresher and tastes better. Local residents are very community minded. In a time of increased globalization and large factory farms, they like to support local business and know who grows or produces their food.” This year the Kimberley market has 17 new vendors selling handmade quilts, cold pressed soap, wine, glitter tattoos, shade sails, fibre artwork, pottery, fresh baking, grass fed meat, juice, custom engraved products, body care products and fruits and vegetables. Other exciting news is the market’s participation in the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets, Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program. This program was created in 2012 to give lower income expectant mothers, young families and seniors access to fresh nutritious food from their local farmers’ markets. Wildsight Kimberley/Cranbrook Branch Manager Andrea Chapman is very committed to this program. “We are very excited to be offering this program and it had been a personal goal of mine to bring it to our local area.” She added, “Making the market accessible to everyone has the potential to heighten the pride and purpose of this weekly ritual in our community.” Wildsight Kimberley/Cranbrook is thankful for in kind help from The City of Kimberley, the amazing volunteers, and to all of the vendors and customers for making the market a huge success.
