Hillis to take over as new CAO for the Town of Rimbey BY TREENA MIELKE The town of Rimbey will soon have a new lady at the helm. Lori Hillis, a chartered ac-
countant who has worked for the town for three years, has been hired as CAO. Hillis is to take over the position Aug. 1. Hillis, who is a chartered
accountant, was hired as director of finance for the town in February of 2013. She later took over as assistant CAO. Prior to working for Rimbey, Hillis worked for an accounting firm in Red Deer and for RBC Dominion Securities. She is looking forward to her new role. “I’m excited and looking forward to the new challenges and opportunities of
working with the mayor and council in my new role. I enjoy working in municipal government and am proud to be part of the town’s growth and prosperity. “ Hillis went to high school in Rimbey and her father, Ray Jarl was on council for many years and served as mayor from 1992 to 1995. Her mother, Lorraine Jarl worked at a financial institution in Rimbey for several years.
Hillis lives outside of Rimbey on an acreage with her husband, Grant. The couple has three grown children and six grandchildren. Mayor Rick Pankiw is pleased to work with Hillis in her new role. “It’s a win/win,” she said. “We advertised the position and a number of people applied, but we were pleased to be able to hire internally and promote Lori to the new position. She has trained with
Donna for several months now and is very qualified for the job.” Acting CAO Donna Tona worked with the town for several months, but was hired on a part time basis in a contract position. Tona said the time spent in Rimbey has left her with great memories and a great deal of respect for the people who work hard to make

Columnist expresses thoughts on wellknown biker gang, Hells Angels

Letters to the Editor Policy The Rimbey Review welcomes letters to the Editor, especially those dealing with topical or local issues. Letters should be a maximum of 500 words in length and must have the writer’s signature over printed name, along with the writer’s address and telephone number. The address and telephone number will not be printed. This newspaper reserves the right to edit letters for length and legal considerations. Deadline is noon the Thursday prior to publication. Send your letter to: The Editor, Rimbey Review, Box 244, Rimbey, AB T0C 2J0 or email: reporter@rimbeyreview.com
Jonah Kondro This column was an afterthought, spurred by Stu Salkeld’s June 7th column in the Rimbey Review. I want to make it clear that I do not endorse violent criminal gang activity: a pair of neck tattoos and an all-black wardrobe that rivals Johnny Cash’s isn’t doing me any favors, though. Salkeld wrote on the infamous Hells Angels, an
alleged motorcycle club. Two days after his column appeared, on June 9th the Edmonton Sun printed an article by Paige Parsons regarding the recent Hells Angels’ arrests and criminal charges following a police investigation into a fraud scheme. The point I want to make is that in the article by Parsons states “10 people were arrested” and “two of the people arrested … are full patch members of the Hells Angels.” The remaining eight persons involved were said to be either support club members or associates of the infamous motorcycle club. The front page of the Edmonton Sun’s June 9th publication includes in big capitalized letters “BIKER BUST,” and a photograph of the well-known three piece Hell Angels patch on a leather vest. The image
and pronouncement on the front page is misleading as only two out of the 10 arrested, according to Parsons’ article, are fullpatch members of the Hells Angels. In Salkeld’s column in the Rimbey Review, he suggests that “[t]hey [the Hells Angels] know the enemy of organized crime is attention, specifically media attention.” This is where I disagree with Salkeld. The photo on the cover of the June 9th Edmonton Sun prompted me to purchase a copy of their publication: it had the grabbing photo of the infamous motorcycle clothing. This is an example of the media reporting on the Hells Angel’s to encourage sales. This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. (Side Note: Trump can say anything and get front page coverage.)
Moreover, what is even more appalling about media sales, particularly consumer television, is the large number of people who watched the Sons of Anarchy (SoA) show. Wikipedia suggests there was 4.9 million weekly viewers during the show’s third season. The television show employed David Labrava, a patch member of the Hells Angels south of the border, as a technical advisor, writer, and eventually an actor—according to onepercenterbikers.com. I bought a newspaper because it had coverage on the Hells Angels; and I don’t doubt that millions of viewers watched SoA because of the show’s claimed associations with a Hells Angels’ member. The motorcycle organization, club, gang, or whatever you want to call it is
selling media whether it wants to or not, and we are all buying it—well, I gave up on SoA after the second season (soap operas aren’t for me). What the media sales— hinged to the Hells Angels—is doing is activating the romantic portions of the consumer’s mind. Imaginations and fantasies are running wild while ignoring the reported facts. And such a practice is softening the image of the Hells Angels, which is what I believe Salkeld is getting at in his column. However, the media sales, especially concerning the show SoA, is aiding this softening. The Hells Angels are interwoven more and more into current culture—for the good or the bad depending on what side of the coin you want to land up.

Dismissal of Reader questions GST AFSC board of charges on funeral directors needed, says MLA arrangements Letters
Dear Editor, In the last nine months my husband and I have lost three of our parents. It has been a difficult time watching our parents’ health deteriorate. We then had to deal with funeral arrangements and discovered that GST is charged on all funeral expenses. We were shocked that our federal government taxes its citizens at such a difficult time. It was our understanding that when this tax was introduced, funeral services tried to find themselves exempt, but, of course, were unsuccessful. The funeral director mentioned that he has always found it uncomfortable telling families, during this difficult
time, that there will also be tax added to the cost of the services and merchandise provided. We had to pay tax on our parents’ funerals. Why? I ask this with a humble heart. Why is this done? Why is this allowed? Why? I am writing this letter to ask for your readers’ help. As the saying goes, it is the squeaky wheel that gets the grease. I plan on being a squeaky wheel. I have started a petition in an effort to get unreal costs exempt from GST. It will be at various locations in Central Alberta. Please take time to sign it. I have also written to Blaine Calkins, MP. His address is 4612 50th Street, Ponoka, AB. T4J
1S7 I also followed up on a suggestion by Mr. Calkins’s assistant to write to Hon. Bill Morneau, Finance Minister, House of Commons, Ottawa, Ont. KIA OA6 and Hon. Diane Lebouthille, Minister of National Revenue, House of Commons, Ottawa, Ont. K1A OA6. I realize that snail mail is old school, but I encourage your readers to write them a letter. Let them know that you are upset about this GST charge as well. Please help me in getting our federal politicians to be aware. The more voices that squeak, the better the chances of this issue being heard and change happening. Debbie Steeves, Bluffton
Jason Nixon MLA, RimbeyRocky Mountain HouseSundre EDMONTON, AB (June 13, 2016): Wildrose Shadow Democracy and Accountability Minister Jason Nixon released the following statement on the dismissal of the Board of Directors of the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation
(AFSC): “We are glad to see the executives of the AFSC investigated. For years, rumours have circulated about questionable practices at the AFSC. “Wildrose first questioned the practices of the AFSC in 2013. At that time, the AFSC demanded FOIP fees as high as $4,450 to avoid accountability. “The culture of entitlement that existed under the previous government permeated many of the agencies, boards and commissions created under its watch. “It is our sincere hope that going forward, transparency and the utmost respect for taxpayer dollars will be the focus of the AFSC and other agencies, boards and commissions.”

Rimbey Rodeo queen New CAO for Rimbey contestants vie for title continued from page 3
BY TREENA MIELKE Three sixteen-yearold local girls are vying for the right to wear the crown as Miss Rimbey Rodeo, 2016. Meghann Smawley is from Bluffton and is a Grade 10 student at Rimbey Junior/Senior High School. Smawley loves horses and has been riding since she was knee high to a grasshopper. She has also spent time working on her grandfather, John Curtis’s cattle farm near Hoadley. Running for rodeo queen has been a long time dream for the teen. “I’ve wanted to do it since I was little and I decided this was the year.” Smawley has enjoyed the competition. “It has been really great,’ she said. The contestants are so much fun and it is a really good atmosphere.” Seana Rousseau is from Rimbey and is a Grade 10
student at Hunting Hills High School in Red Deer. In the past she has helped give horse-riding lessons to children, a job she greatly enjoyed. “I like mentoring kids,” she said. Roussea is a competitive cow rider and recently won ladies cow riding at the Eckville rodeo. Running for rodeo queen is an adventure, she added. “I’m an adventuresome kind of girl and I have a passion and a love for the sport of rodeo.” Kali Bedu-Olson lives in Rimbey and is a Grade 10 student at Rimbey high school. She lives in town but has two horses at Platinum Paints, owned by Kyla Cross near Bluffton. She has done some competitive riding, but most enjoys pleasure riding. She decided to run for rodeo queen after she saw how much fun the
contestants were having last year. “It just seemed like a lot of fun and it has been,” she said. Hard work, determination, family values and promoting the western way of life are traits she would endeavor to display if selected as rodeo queen, she said. Rimbey rodeo will be held July 8, 9 and 10 at Rimbey agricultural grounds.
the town the best it can be. “The opportunity to work in many municipalities is always a privilege. The call from council to assist in my hometown was a terrific experience. The staff team is a very hard working group of professionals who have invested in making the town great. It’s not just a job to them.” Tona said neighboring municipalities and vendors were great to work with. “Working with the county CAO and his staff was not work at all. We enjoyed get-
ting the job done and we had fun doing it.” She also commended the RCMP, businessmen and the town’s engineering and planning professionals. “We have a stellar group of vendors, namely our engineering and planning professionals. Our contractors from Rimbey that assist and residents and agencies in Rimbey, service clubs and businesses are the best assets Rimbey can have. Everyone has worked together and will continue to make Rimbey great.
My thanks also to Const. Dutz and his RCMP team of members and staff who have provided support and guidance. They have a difficult job, but make time for events and community programs. My respectful gratitude goes to them all.” Tona expressed the utmost confidence in the new CAO. “Rimbey is in very capable and professional hands with Lori Hillis. I have enjoyed every minute of working with her.”

Sale of Rimbey airport to be advertised, local pilots interested in purchasing BY TREENA MIELKE A group of four area men who want to purchase the Rimbey airport and return it to a year-round use facility will have to bid on the project and can only hope their dream has the financial backing to actually get wings and fly. Pete Couchman, Paul Kusch, Wayne Danser and Gerald Ernst put in an offer to purchase the airport to the town, but acting CAO Donna Tona said there is a process to follow regarding the sale of the airport. According to the MGA, Tona said town owned land needs to be appraised and advertised and put out for bids, which must be sealed and delivered to the town.
“There is no shortcut,” said Tona. “I admire these men’s enthusiasm, but everything has to be done the right way. We have to follow the MGA process.” The Rimbey airport was originally owned by Ponoka County and sold to the Town of Rimbey for $1, but Tona said because it was a sale of land belonging to one municipality being sold to another municipality, the same process wasn’t required. Ernst said the men who put in the offer, himself included, are all concerned about the continued decline in the quality and usability of the Rimbey airport. “We are extremely well qualified to take over the airport and would sincerely
appreciate the opportunity to do what we know how to do.” The men want to bring the airport and runway conditions back to its original state. “We want the airport to be a vibrant asset for the community and we want people to congratulate the town of Rimbey on the quality of the facility in their community.” Ernst explained that centerline potholes and low spots have developed on the runway as it must be rolled, while saturated, every two years. “To the best of our knowledge this has never been done. The reason the runway still remains usable is due, in part, to the resident

enthusiast’s past and ongoing pick-up truck and shovel repairs to the dips, potholes and numerous old plowing divots.” Ernst said proper runway maintenance is critical to ensure the safety of the people using the airport. “Pilots have to know the runway is always in top condition.” Ernst also gave credit to the resident caretaker, Evelyn Prince’s ongoing upkeep efforts. In a letter to town council, the group of four stated airports do not make money. “Rimbey airport is no exception. The rewards reaped are in seeing it work to its true potential.” The men also pointed out benefits the town would gain if they accepted their offer of purchase.
“WE ARE EXTREMELY WELL QUALIFIED TO TAKE OVER THE AIRPORT AND WOULD SINCERELY APPRECIATE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO WHAT WE KNOW HOW TO DO.” PETE COUCHMAN, PAUL KUSCH, WAYNE DANSER AND GERALD ERNST
As well as proceeds from the sale, the town would realize a savings of $30,000 in 2016 by having no costs associated with the airport. They would have no liability risks and would reap benefits of an increased number of aviation visitors and permanent users. The owners would provide a written guarantee of primarily aviation use for as long as they owned the airport. The airport, if sold to the interested parties, would have upgrades complet-

From day, one, this has been a very noble project, and it is our sincere goal (if we purchased the airport) to realize the full potential a well-run and maintained airport will provide to our community,” the letter stated. The letter also states Rimbey airport is one of hundreds of airports Transport Canada constructed and owned across Canada. All of these airports with the exception of Churchill airport, were signed over the local jurisdictions, flying clubs and various municipalities and associations without financial return to Transport Canada.

Council to continue to accept cement and charge slightly more per tonne BY TREENA MIELKE
After a lengthy discussion highlighted with suggestions that proved to not be written in stone, council cemented their concrete disposal fees. At its June 13 meeting, council agreed to begin charging $25 per tonne for
concrete without rebar and $40 per tonne with rebar of which $5 per truck load, regardless of weight, would be reimbursed to Nikirk Bros Contracting for the use of their scale. The town presently has a large amount of concrete and was considering not accepting more until what
they had stocked up was crushed and used. “Why would we want to stockpile something that’s just going to sit there?” said Mayor Rick Pankiw. However, council decided to look at marketing the concrete and raise the fee for purchasing it slightly.
The concrete is crushed on site. It is stockpiled northeast of town near the recycle facility. Director of public works Rick Schmidt said there is a great deal of cement being store on the site at the present time. The cement comes from outside sources as well as town projects.

traveling to San Diego to represent Canada at an international golf tournament. He is also proud of his niece, Clare McMahon, who received a four-year golf scholarship from North Carolina. He noted that the 18-year-old is an amazing golfer and took part in the junior golf program at Gull Lake for many years. He is pleased that students from the Golf Academy at Bentley School participate in the program, as well. “They are improving so fast,” he said. cost the organization approximately $5,000 for solicitation. Money raised will go to the Gull Lake Junior Golf Foundation Endowment Fund. Through overwhelming sponsorship from communities throughout Alberta and past program events, scholarships have been provided to many junior members. The focus of junior league has always been to learn the etiquette of golf and good sportsmanship and to encourage the juniors to enjoy the game of golf for the rest of their life. The foundation was spearheaded by Harold Lissel. McCann noted that Lissel, chairman George Smith and other volunteer board members give willingly of their time
and energy to ensure the program works well and the young golfers benefit from the scholarships available.

Open house to be held regarding proposed land use bylaw BY TREENA MIELKE After several months of planning, re-writing, revising and editing, the Town of Rimbey’s land use bylaw is ready for public scrutiny. Hard copies of the bylaw are available at the front counter of the town office and are also on the town’s website. First reading to the document was given at the June 13 meeting of council and an open house will be held July 25 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the council chambers. Administration, the town planner Liz Armitage, engineers and councilors will be on hand to answer questions during the open house. Armitage said public input is important. “The town does want feedback,” she said, noting the entire bylaw has been re-written. “It’s a completely new document. The bones of this document should last for many years although amendments will be needed to keep it up to date.” The town planner explained that a land use bylaw is needed to provide rules and regulations for the town to develop in a cohesive manner. She noted that the previous land use bylaw was created several years ago and is no longer current. “For example we have included solar panels as a use in this one,” she said. “This document is as proactive as you can get.” Armitage encourages the public to attend the public hearing or submit comments in writing to her at the town office. Written submissions should be handed in by July 8 so they can be incorporated into the land use bylaw in time for the public hearing.

RICHARDS Fred Richards embodied a person many of us aspire to be, but few of us ever become in a lifetime. A true Renaissance man, young Fred lead a rhythm and blues band, was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks as a goalie, went on to teach Royal Canadian Air Force pilots how to fly jet planes, became a captain for Air Canada and an aircraft crash investigator, only to retire and begin a new life as a cattle rancher and farrier. Fred learned quickly, gave generously and laughed easily. He was a man, quite simply, who could do anything. Born in 1945 in Stow Bardolph, England to a war bride, he was named after his Canadian father, an RCAF spitfire pilot who had been shot down over Holland and gone missing behind enemy lines. Fred’s father eventually escaped, and the family moved to Toronto at the end of the war. Fred preferred chatting and playing Bridge over school work; this behaviour lead him to join the Air Force at 20 years old, where he flew Tutors and T-Birds. He married Kathy in 1967 after meeting her at a University of Western Ontario dance. He was one of the best-looking people Kathy had ever seen. While instructing pilots in Gimli in 1971, Fred’s son Matthew was born. The family was then transferred to a Navy base on Vancouver Island where Fred flew patrols over the sea, tracking everything from American submarines to oil slicks. In 1973, he joined Air Canada, where he earned $800 for his first month of work as a second officer. His daughter Sarah was born that same year. The family eventually moved to Winnipeg in 1978. Fred enjoyed Winnipeg; he felt it was a good place to raise children. Every year, he participated in the Franco-Manitoban Festival du Voyageur, donning a voyageur’s blue felt coat, red sash and tuque to ride his horse Midnight in the parade. Summers were spent at a cottage near Kenora; fishing, reading, swimming and picking ‘blubes’ to make blueberry pie with his kids. To his family, Fred demonstrated a fatherly devotion few have the fortune to experience. In 1992, he fulfilled Kathy’s dream of owning a cattle farm by moving to Alberta. Fred became a skilled farrier and loved the challenge of shoeing, which required a keen understanding of a horse’s temperament and health. He also enjoyed roping and cutting and was an active member of the Rimbey Rodeo Board and Rimbey Agricultural Society. His wit was quicker than a rattlesnake’s strike, and could be equally as barbed. Nevertheless, Fred reserved judgment for the most egregious. His temper could be stronger than a tsunami, but was almost always fueled by the unrealistic standards he set for himself. As his health grew increasingly poor, Fred continued to live his life for others, whether it be helping neighbours or skating with his grandson. During his final hours, Fred never complained as his family, unable to let go, sought every treatment or medication to save him from the effects of a stroke and failing heart. Fred wanted to live, but he was not afraid of death. For years, he had eased the suffering of his own animals, a responsibility that deeply affected him, but that he insisted taking on. He knew he could do it right, and do it best, as he did with his own death. His disappearance has left an immense hole in the lives of those who knew and loved him. His funeral will be held at the Rimbey United Church today, Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at 1:00 p.m., with the Reverend David Holmes officiating. Interment will follow in the Iola Fairview Cemetery, Bluffton. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Fred’s Memory may be made directly to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, #202, 5913 - 50 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta T4N 4C4 (www.heartandstroke.ab.ca). Carolyn Elizabeth Hofstra passed away peacefully at home on Friday, June 10, 2016 at the age of 46 years. This was unexpected and far to soon for everyone. Carolyn was a devoted wife, mother, sister and friend who was full of laughter and love and always the first one to help out anywhere that was needed. People who knew her, knew she was kindhearted, strong willed and a pillar for her family and friends. Carolyn lived her life to the fullest, she knew what she wanted and never waited for anyone to go get it. Family was very important to Carolyn and she could often be found surrounded by family and friends cheering her children at a sporting event or relaxing around a campfire. Carolyn’s zest for life touched everyone who knew her, and she will be missed dearly by all her friends and family. Carolyn is survived by her loving husband, John Hofstra, her three children Devon, Caley and Logan and numerous brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Carolyn was predeceased by her mother Mary Kovach and her father in law Max Hofstra. A celebration of life was held on Friday June 17th, 2016 at the Peter Lougheed Community Center at 11:00 am with Father Les Drewicki Celebrant. SCHOOLER Pamela “Pam” Jean Schooler (nee Lohrmann) of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at the age of 51 years. Pam was born in Hanna, Alberta on October 11, 1964. She was the second daughter to Lou and Carol Lohrmann. Raised on the Scapa farm, Pam went to school in Hanna and completed Grade 12 in 1982. She worked around Hanna as a secretary after high school for several years. This included a stint working with her dad in his real estate office. In 1985, Pam married her high school sweetheart, Brad. Together they left Hanna in 1987 when Brad accepted a work transfer. They lived at several posts around Alberta until they settled in Rimbey in 1990. A son, Brent, was born in 1988. While Brent was in school, Pam resumed work, developing expertise and a thriving career as a parts person for Rimbey Farm Implement dealers until her health, which she battled most of her adult life, forced her to retire. Pam was well-known for her many accomplishments as a young member of 4H, most notably her cattle raising and showing skills, for which she won many awards. There are boxes of ribbons and trophies to show for it. Her many hobbies included: gardening, canning jams and jellies, scrapbooking, and card making. Pam was a guiding force in the Safe Drive program in the local area, which allowed her caring and passion for young people to shine through. She was an avid snowmobiler with her husband and son, and very much enjoyed camping around the countryside with friends and family. Throughout the years Pam enjoyed participating in, as well as watching, curling. She was a volunteer for various worthy causes and really enjoyed volunteering. Among the most notable of these activities was her involvement with Ponoka Air Cadets Squadron 65, which started when her son, Brent joined and continued for many years afterwards. Her very favourite part of fundraising for the Air Cadets was the 50/50 ticket selling at the Ponoka Stampede every year. The last several years Pam enjoyed her homes at Gull Lake, mixed in with some travel, and most of all her first grandson, Brayden, who she cherished more than life itself. Pam will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her beloved husband, Brad; her son, Brent (Lacey) Schooler of Drayton Valley; and her cherished grandson, Brayden. She will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her sister and brother-in-law, Luann and David Buchwitz of Pigeon Lake; her nephew, Kelly Buchwitz (Bobbi) and great nephews: Benjamin, Sullivan and Charlie, all of Scapa, Alberta. She also leaves behind a large group of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who were very fond of her. Pam was predeceased by her parents, Lou and Carol; and her grandparents: Charlie and Christina Lohrmann, and Manly and Pearl Viste. A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Pam’s Life was held at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1002 - 3 Street W., Hanna, Alberta on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Colin Millang officiating. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Pam’s Memory may be made directly to the Crohn’s and Colitis Canada ~ Alberta/Northwest Territories Regional Office, 3100 - 246 Stewart Green S.W., Calgary, Alberta T3H 3C8 (www.crohnsandcolitis.ca). It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas Joseph Grundy, on Sunday, June 12, 2016, at the age of 87 years. Tom’s extraordinary life began on the day he was born, when he came into the world in the midst of wild horses thundering around him at the Hand Hills Lake Stampede near Hanna, Alberta. To have known Tom with his signature white cowboy hat (always tilted every so slightly to the side), was to admit to a nostalgic era of by-gone days where the character of a man was not measured by what he said, but by what he did. It was a lifetime of character-defining moments that made this man so precious to those who knew and loved him. A journalist summed up Tom best when she wrote; “People write ballads about personalities like Tom Grundy. Nothing of his life is mundane; big wins, big losses, big struggles and big heart”. When he was 14 years old, Tom’s mother, Sadie, passed away. Being the eldest, Tom left home to work and support his brothers and sisters, while his father was off working as a farmhand and labourer. It was from that time forward that Tom embarked upon a lifetime of adventure, from southern Alberta as a ranch hand on the Bennion Family Ranch, to building bridges in Lethbridge and on the Skeena River, to the oilfields of the Canadian Badlands. No one had a love of horses like Tom. They were a significant constant throughout his life and a passion of his, from the time he was two years old until his passing. Tom rode horses for much of his life in-spite of some significant health setbacks and when he was no longer able to ride, he could be found leaning over a hitching post, giving instruction and offering gentle guidance to a rider or a problem colt. One of his favourite stories to tell was how he rode his big bay mare, Sunday, through the back door of the Rimbey saloon, up to the long bar and ordered a drink. Another story he loved to tell was about how he rode from the stampede ranch with 150 horses, forging rivers and felling trees to build makeshift corrals for over 200 miles to the Calgary Stampede. Tom was in love with and happily married to his soul mate, Judy Grundy, and this past June 1st they quietly celebrated 48 years of matrimonial bliss. In their later years, Tom and Judy became pillars in the Salt Spring Island Lions Club where Tom was recently given the Humanitarian award for his enduring service in helping others less fortunate in the community. Tom was also a member in good standing with the local legion and could be found there from time to time enjoying a “beverage” with friends. Tommy was special to all who knew him and quick to offer a handshake and a smile. To his family, he was more often than not a quiet, considerate man who never spoke poorly of others and lead by example. He insisted that family take care of one another and love each other. He was a husband, brother, father, grandfather and uncle who was loved deeply and will be missed greatly. Happy trails cowboy, until we meet again. Tom is survived by his wife, Jeltje “Judy”, his sisters, Janet Stout, Anita Alderwood, Pearl Stout (Jim), Grace Stout (Ted) and his family; Donald (Alda), Shane (Lana), Shevaun and Liam, Todd (Lynette), Austin, Tristin; James (Francisco), Jennifer and Ciele, Jayden; Robert (Kathy), Ellen (Clay), Lucas; Graham (Bonnie), Samantha (Chris), Shelby (Brian), Damien, Owen, and Haley; Michael (Angela), Brittany and Levi, Chanel and Mikhaela; Colleen (Kerry), Sheldon, Petr, Emily and Grace; Susan (Miles) and Olivia. He is predeceased by his parents William and Sadie, brothers Bill and Fred, brother-in-law Tom Stout and grand daughter, Lexi Jade.

A part of Bentley’s history has come to a close. On June 12, the Bentley United Church parking lot was full and other parking was at a premium. People lined up to get inside the building to sign the guest book. Some old-time congregation members and many visitors joined in with the current members for one last time. It was the day of the very last United Church service to be held in Bentley. The church building has been sold and the decommissioning of the church building and disbanding of the congregation was being made official. It was a time to celebrate memories. Pianist Nancy Forman, who also plays at Blackfalds United Church, filled the sanctuary with wonderful music as she has done for two years. Rev. Brenda Kersell, who came to minister to Bentley and Blackfalds about September 2014, kept a positive spin on the service. She believes she is the first female minister in Bentley. Kersell is retiring as of June 30. Board chair David Thevenaz gave the statement of purpose. Nine hard working volunteers from the Bentley United Church, holding props, took part in the Litany of Thanksgiving. They included Arnold and Betty Kubista, Neil and Marilyn Cunningham, Gail Wilson, Marion Hahn, Diana Garries, Joan Hornett and David Thevenaz alongside Rev. Kersell. A few people shared memories. “This is a time of letting go of this safe community and sacred place. It is hard to see the closing of a beloved building that has held such an important place in our lives, and was entrusted to us by previous generations,” said Rev. Kersell in her one prayer. “This church has been a spiritual home for us.” She spoke of moving on when old values and traditions would no longer serve the purpose.

At the service, Gaie Goin, past chair of the Red Deer Presbytery, stated that “as of June 13, this building is no longer a place of worship.” Lunch and a time of fellowship and visiting followed in the kitchen basement. The church has been struggling with a small congregation for a few years. A Thrift Shop, set up in the west side in the Christian Education building, that used to be full of Sunday School children, provided the extra income needed to keep paying the bills, and served the community and general public very well for the last ten years. It was closed last October. It was hard to continue with pancake, turkey and spaghetti suppers for fundraisers after the provincial government put so many food regulations in place. As the congregation aged, many had to move away or could no longer help, leaving all the work on fewer and fewer people. It just finally got to be too much. At a special meeting, the remaining members voted to disband - to close the church and offer it for sale. The current building was built in 1965 and had many improvements done to it over the years. It had a full kitchen in the basement and that is where lunch and fellowship followed after this last service. There had been many banquets, suppers, lunches, Christmas parties, family get togethers, anniversaries, weddings, and funerals served there. Beavers, Cubs, & Scouts and Sparks, Brownies, & Guides had made use of the building as the United Church had been their official sponsor for most of their years in Bentley. Other groups used the building as well like the CGIT and TOPS for a while. The building was offered for sale in the summer of 2014. A log church was used in Bentley from 1901-1910. A brick church was then built and used until the current building was erected. The cinder block building, built in 1965, was used until this day. Current church board members included recent chair David Thevenaz, secretary Gail Wilson, treasurer Diana Garries, and trustees Cecil Galloway, Betty Kubista, and Niel Cunningham. Many artifacts like the big church bell and other things have been, and will be, donated to the local museum. Other items and finances will go to places that can make use of them. Earlier in the year, families had been invited to take home things they had connections to. The support of the whole community as a whole over the years has been overwhelming. The new owners may renovate part of the building for a home, with the possibility of also having a small business. “It is a sign of the times,” many people say. It is hard for churches in small towns, the way society is heading many agree. The Bentley Roman Catholic church was closed in 2010.
