Wilks’s hat is back in the ring Former Kootenay-Columbia MP seeks B.C. Liberal nomination for Kootenay East

TREVOR CRAWLEY

The B.C. Liberal nomination race as officially begun as former Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks has announced his intention to run. Wilks, who has experience in municipal politics as the mayor of Sparwood for two terms along with serving on the board of directors with the Regional District of East Kootenay, said he is looking forward to the nomination process. “After talking with family and friends and supporters, I decided to put my name in the hat,” said Wilks. “I have a strong passion for poli-

some more things done.” He paid homage to outgoing B.C. Liberal MLA Bill Bennett, who announced his retirement from provincial politics last week. “Bill Bennett has done a wonderful job over the last 16 years and if I win the nomination, I look forward to continuing on with that legacy,” Wilks said. Wilks spent the last four years in federal politics as the Kootenay-Columbia MP within the Conservative Party, however, he lost his re-election bid to NDP candidate Wayne Stetski by only 200 votes.

FPPAS presents the sounds of Canada Day

Fisher Peak Performing Arts Society, running July 1 entertainment, getting bigger every year BARRY COULTER

Where in the world wide web will you find out what’s happening right here at home?

www.cranbrooktownsman.com

The summer is a busy time for the Fisher Peak Performing Artists Society (FPPAS). The Society’s summer kicked off with hosting the Sam Steele Days entertainment in Rotary Park, and this weekend approaching, FFPAS is running the Canada Day entertainment for the first time, also in Rotary Park, Friday, July 1. Celebrants of the 149th anniversary of Confederation can look forward to almost seven hours of live music provided by local performers. • From 3 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., Neve , Parsons & Hamilton will take the stage. NP&H is a fresh three-piece band comprised of veteran local musicians that concentrates on the British Invasion and on the rock and roll classics of the 1960s. • 4:50 to 5:10 p.m. features Mismatched Socks, a young local family band with a bluegrass and country feel. • Holly and Jon, a dynamic father and daughter blues duo from the Slocan Valley, perform from 5:15 to 7 p.m. • The Twilight Trio follows, 7:05 to 7:25 p.m. The Twilight Trio is a new local three-piece act presenting great harmonies in their rendition of the classics. • One of Cranbrook’s most dynamic bands — the Mile High Club — will be performing Rock classics from the past five decades from 7:30 to 9:15 p.m. • Local troubadour Dave Prinn takes the stage at 9:20 to 9:40 p.m. Prinn offers his own material as well as as putting his own twist on well know alternative folk and blues classics. The Fisher Peak Performing Artists Society, founded two years ago by a group of local performing artists, is definitely an organization by the people, for the people. “We’re getting bigger every year,” said Randy Tapp, FPPAS Secretary.

Blues duo Holly and Jon are among the acts performing at Canada Day festivities in Rotary Park, Friday, July 1. The Society’s main goal is to promote the performing arts in the Cranbrook area — whether it be music, spoken word, dance or theatre — through exposure and through partnerships with like-minded groups. FPPAS is building alliances with the Key City Theatre, the City of Cranbrook and Columbia Basin Trust, and is active finding in events and venues for local performing artists, as well as helping performers get the compensation they deserve. FPPAS is currently in the midst of a membership and sponsorship drive, inviting people and organizations to become part of Cranbrook’s active and vibrant performing arts scene, with all the perquisites that accompany membership. “It’s important to our survival as a society that people come to support us as members,” said Society President James Neve. “The more we keep in touch with the community the more support we get.” Members can even get access to some paid positions at various events, Neve said, and acquire some skills in

areas like technical support, stage set-up and event management. Following Canada Day, FPPAS will add a festival atmosphere to downtown Cranbrook for the summer. The popular Summer Sounds concert series will be back, as well as Dancing in the Park. This year, the two features are being combined into one, taking place every Saturday in Rotary Park starting July 9. And FFPAS’s plans for the second annual Winter Ale Concert Series — a partnership with the Key City Theatre — are already in the planning stages. Canada Day festivities in Rotary Park begin at 3 p.m., Friday, July 1. Memberships for the Fisher Peak Performing Artists Society are available at Lotus Books in Cranbrook, from Society members, or at FPPAS events. Memberships are $10 per person, $25 per family. Members also get discounts on merchandise and paid shows, but the, real value is knowing that you are helping Cranbrook made a bigger impact on the arts scene in the East Kootenay, said Neve.

Premier, B.C. Liberal ATV accident claims cabinet wrap up retreat life of local woman

TREVOR CRAWLEY

Provincial politicians have headed back to their respective ridings after a three day retreat that included Liberal government cabinet ministers and B.C. Premier Christy Clark. The retreat served as a opportunity to talk policy for the upcoming election in 2017, while grading themselves on their successes and looking at what improvements could be made, according to Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. The retreat also included a number of announcements, the biggest of which was Bennett revealing that he would not be seeking another term after 16 years in politics. In an address to Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce members, Clark also announced that nursing students will now be able to complete a fouryear degree program at the College of the Rockies, while simultaneously boosting funding for skilled-trades training programs. The East Kootenay Regional Hospital also got some attention, with the announcement of a $5.3 million permanent MRI unit that will be built next to the new ICU. While those were the major announcements, there were also some interesting nuggets from Premier Clark in her address the Chamber, which included a keynote speech and a Q&A session afterwards. Topics in her address included the provincial sales tax (PST), the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), and inter-provincial trade. She joked that she didn’t want to talk about

A 35-year-old woman has died as a result of an ATV crash on Sunday, June 26. The crash took place on a de-activated Forest Service Road, near Lost Dog Forest Service Road, northeast of Kimberley. The woman — who

was wearing a helmet — was operating the machine when it flipped over. BC Ambulance attended by helicopter but were unable to revive her. Kimberley RCMP will be assisting the BC Coroner’s Service with the investigation and have confirmed that the victim was a local woman.

Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett and B.C. Premier Christy Clark in a media scrum following a Chamber of Commerce luncheon Thursday, June 23, at St. Eugene. the PST after Chris Thom, the president of the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce, asked her to speak on the subject. “I don’t like talking about the PST because it’s a very inefficient tax,” Clark said. “...We know it can be more efficient and [Finance Minister] Mike de Jong has established a commission to examine whether the province’s current taxes are the best suited and the regime that we have to enable business competitiveness. She referenced the provincial referendum results on the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) — an issue that led to the resignation of former Premier Gordon Campbell. “We do know also that the people of British Columbia spoke very clearly about the HST, and I have promised that we will respect their decision, but I also know we need to find ways to make sure what we have in this very inefficient PST system is somewhat more efficient.” The TPP was also an issue that came up in the Q&A session, as a con-

cern was voiced that the trade deal puts the interests of multi-national corporations ahead of small business, which Clark vehemently disagreed with. “The people who argue against free trade — and it’s usually always the same suspects out there — would tell you that the Trans-Pacific Partnership will allow corporations to supersede laws in Canada and make their own laws,” she said. “That is not true, so I think that would probably be the primary concern for people. If we take that concern away, and it’s certainly not true, all of this benefit is almost all upside for British Columbia.” British Columbia has the most to gain from the TPP than any other province in the country, she added. “Like any trade agreement, there are positives and negatives,” Clark said. “We give and we take. That’s how trade works, but we also saw that the benefits are greater for British Columbia coming out of the TPP, than any other

province in Canada.” On the topic of trade, Clark lamented the trade barriers for inter-provincial trade and said it is easier for British Columbia to trade with other countries than with other provinces. “I just think it’s crazy that in Canada, that it’s easier for us to trade with the Americans, with Korea, with Europe, than it is with Ontario, for heavens sake,” Clark said. She used the industry of B.C. vintners as an example of what tearing down trade barriers can do for economic growth. “We took down all of our trade barriers on wine, so we could set an example for the rest of the country,” Clark said. “Bring it on, folks, and guess what? B.C. vintners are selling more, B.C. Liquor board is earning more money. It has created jobs, rather than stymied them. “We really need to create a free-trade zone across this country that’s bigger than British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan as it currently is.”

Wilks seeks nomination CONTINUED from page 1

Prior to his time in federal politics, Wilks served as mayor of Sparwood and also at the RDEK table, where he was able to establish relationships with regional elected representatives. “If you think about from the perspective, municipally, any mayor — I know them all personally — they have to be able to just call you if they think that they need something within their city, town, village,” Wilks said. “For me, federally, I know all of the players from the Conservative side and I know a lot of the Liberals and NDP as

well. I think people know me good enough to know that I can work across party lines. I don’t have a problem with that.” Responsibility for certain issues can vary at the provincial and federal levels, but there area a few issues that Wilks would like to address. In the Elk Valley, Wilks would like to get the federal government to divest it’s hold on the Dominion coal block, which is inside Parcel 73 and 82. Wilks will be keeping an eye on Mainroad Contracting and seeing how they fare with highway maintenance

in the winter season now that the company has a new contract with the province. Cranbrook is the hub of the Kootenays and it will be important to ensure that the city gets the services needed to serve not just the city but the region as well, Wilks added. He singled out supporting the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District Board, which has a jurisdiction throughout the region that is beyond the Kootenay East riding boundary. Wilks added that following in the footsteps of Bennett — who served 16 years in politics — isn’t all that intimidating, since he did

it before when he took over from former Conservative MP Jim Abbott, who represented the riding for 17 years. “Each person has their own unique qualities and their own abilities,” Wilks said. “I believe I’ve been able to prove myself over time not only federally but municipally and regionally that I’m one that likes to get things done.” He also isn’t shy about admitting that he likely won’t be the only one in the race for the B.C. Liberal nomination. “I hope it’s a spirited nomination and may the best person win,” Wilks said.

B.C. NDP commits to $15 minimum wage TO M F L E TC H E R Black Press

NDP leader John Horgan is promising to “give British Columbians a raise” by raising the province’s minimum wage to $15 by the end of his first term as premier in 2021. Horgan made the announcement at a party conference in Kamloops Sunday. “Minimum wage is no longer something earned just by teenagers in their first jobs,” Horgan said. “Students, parents, seniors, new Canadians in every part of the economy are paid minimum wage.” In May, Premier Christy Clark announced a 40-cent topup to her government’s minimum wage formula, bringing it to $10.85 effective Sept. 15. The B.C. Liberal govern-

ment’s cost-of-living formula called for a 10cent increase this fall. Clark said her government will add another 30 cents to the next scheduled increase in September 2017. Assuming another 10-cent cost of living increase, the wage would be $11.25, which Clark said would give B.C. the third highest rate in Canada. The B.C. Liberal formula discounts the minimum wage by $1.25 for restaurant and pub servers, to reflect the income they receive from tips. The B.C. Federation of Labour immediately issued a statement Sunday congratulating Horgan for backing their long-running campaign to move the minimum wage to $15 an hour.

Brexit … Frexit, Nexit, Swexit, Plexit...?

“T

he EU is dying. I hope we’ve knocked the first brick out of the wall,” exulted Nigel Farage, leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party. He proposed that June 23rd, when the British narrowly voted (51.8 percent of the votes) to leave the European Union, should be a new national holiday called Independence Day. But author J.K. Rowling, who wanted Scotland to remain in the United Kingdom and the UK to remain in the EU, tweeted sadly: “Scotland will seek independence now. Cameron’s legacy will be breaking up two unions. Neither needed to happen.” Soon-to-be-former Prime Minister David Cameron’s decision to hold a referendum on Britain’s EU membership has assured the dismantling of the United Kingdom. 58 percent of the English voted “Leave”, while 62 percent of Scots voted “Remain”. It is “democratically unacceptable” for Scotland to be dragged out of the EU by the English, said First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, and a second independence referendum in Scotland is “highly likely”. It remains to be seen whether Cameron’s historic blunder will also trigger the disintegration of the EU itself, but there are plenty of right-wing nationalists in other EU countries who hope there will be a domino effect. Marine Le Pen, leader of France’s Front National, called the UK referendum “a key moment in European history” and said “I hope the French also have a similar exercise.” And “Frexit”is just the start. Geert Wilders, whose anti-Muslim, anti-immigration Freedom Party is predicted to win 46 of the 150 seats in the Dutch parliament in next year’s election, promised that if he were elected, the Nether-

lands will hold its own “Nexit” referendum. Italy’s anti-immigrant Northern League and the populist 5-Star Movement both called for a referendum on Italian membership of the EU. Kristian Thulesen Dahls, the leader of the Danish People’s Party, said that Denmark should follow Britain’s lead. Nationalist leaders in Eastern Europe like Poland’s Jarosław Kaczynski and Hungary’s Viktor Gwynne Orban indulge in harsh anti-EU rhetoric all the time. Dyer And so on. But most of the people who might vote for these nationalist leaders are not seeking the destruction of the EU, just big changes in the way it works — in particular the reform or abolition of the euro and much stricter controls on immigration. Unlike the “Little Englanders” who voted for Brexit, they see the European Union as an essential bulwark against a return to the old Europe of beggar-my-neighbour trade policies and savage wars. The EU’s leaders will have to take a very tough line in the negotiations about the European Union’s post-Brexit relations with the rump of the UK. A horrible example will be required to show the nationalists and populists in other members that leaving is hard and painful. And to preserve the EU they will have to abolish or drastically restructure the euro currency (but that had become necessary anyway). The odds are, however, that the EU will survive. Its biggest problem will not be the loss of Britain, its second-biggest economy, but rather the fact that post-Brexit Germany will dominate the Union even more than it does already. As for the English, they have made their bed and they will have to lie in it. The pound sterling has already lost much value

and will probably lose much more. The last of the three major global ratings agencies, Standard and Poor’s, will downgrade the UK’s AAA credit rating. Foreign investment will dry up, in recognition of the fact that the country will probably lose duty-free access to the EU’s “single market”. Further down the road more pain will follow, as jobs disappear abroad, the English economy goes into recession, and the City of London starts to lose its status as a global financial centre rivalled only by New York. That will make domestic politics nasty enough, but the anti-immigrant fervour and outright racism that disfigured the “Leave” campaign are unlikely to dwindle in the ugly aftermath. Scotland will vote to secede from the UK, but it will face major legal and political barriers in its campaign to remain a member of the EU in its own right. Spain in particular will give it a hard time, as Madrid does not want it to provide a precedent for Catalonia seceding from Spain and painlessly re-emerging as an independent EU member. Northern Ireland will face an even harder time, as the Republic of Ireland will continue to be a EU member and so it will have to re-establish border controls. One alternative,of course, would be for Northern Ireland (which voted strongly in favour of EU membership) to unite with the Republic — but Northern Irish Protestants would still fiercely resist such a proposal, and in that context a revival of armed conflict in the province is not unthinkable. The triumph of Brexit is a most regrettable outcome for everybody involved and possibly even for the world economy. But perhaps it isn’t really all that shocking: Charles De Gaulle vetoed British entry to the Common Market, the EU’s ancestor, for five years on the grounds that it didn’t really have a “European vocation”. Turns out he was right.

In Dawson Creek, large culverts under the main street were plugged by debris, sending water over the road and generating a much-viewed video of a white car precariously perched on the edge as the torrent surrounded it. “Floods happen,” Clark told CTV News. “But not floods like this.” The CTV report, filed from Vancouver with dramatic video to show the worst in Dawson Creek, agreed with the premier’s line: “The Peace region last rebuilt from significant flooding in 2011, but the damage was much worse in this latest case.” Wrong. The same day, the Alaska Highway News quoted Maria Butts, Peace Region district manager for the Ministry of Transportation, on the situa-

MINISTRY OF TRANSPORTATION

Repair work continues last week at Commotion Creek, one of five washouts of Highway 97 north of Prince George. tion. She noted that Highway 97 was washed out in at least five places. “This was a very powerful storm, quite uncommon … but the assessment of damage does not appear to be as extensive as it was in 2011,” Butts said. That’s consistent with my own news reports in the wake of the 2011 storm. Again, it dropped about 130 mm on the Pine Pass in late June. In that event, a 64-km stretch of the highway between Prince George and Chetwynd was washed out or damaged in 77 places. Repairs continued into the fall. Northwestern B.C. received even more rain, with damage to four bridges, 10 large culverts and more than 20 km of roads in the Bulkley-Stikine highways district. I drove up the Trans-Canada Highway in the immediate aftermath of the 2011 storm,

which had affected most of the province to some degree. The divided highway east of Chilliwack had just re-opened after a mudslide poured across it, trapping one vehicle whose passengers escaped unharmed. I drove that route again last week, with only a sprinkle of rain here and there. Every time I pass the large pump station coming into Hope, I’m reminded of the summer of 1983, when I worked at my first reporting job there. Summer in Hope got off to an exciting start when torrential rains washed out the Trans-Canada Highway west of town. Again, it was in June. I had to walk along the closed highway for about a kilometre to get pictures of the huge cut in the divided highway roadbed, and the stretch of CP Rail tracks left hanging in the air after water removed the

railbed below. Mother Nature wasn’t done with the Fraser Canyon in 1983. That fall, having returned to Vancouver to resume journalism school at Langara College, I turned on BCTV news one evening to see the effect of heavy rains on a little motel with cabins along the bank of Silverhope Creek. The old cabin I had stayed in that summer was gone, and the one next to it was badly undercut and about to fall in after the swollen creek had shifted its course. Heavy weather wasn’t a political issue in those days. “Climate change” hadn’t been invented, so there was no motivation for politicians to rush to the scene and pronounce each disaster the worst one ever. LIVING WELL

Keep foodborne illness off your summer menu KE VIN TOUCHET

It’s

the time of year when many of us enjoy cooking outdoors - in parks, campgrounds and back yards. This pleasurable summer pastime of casual dining also provides ideal conditions for outbreaks of foodborne illness. Foodborne illness peaks during the months of May through September because of barbecuing and outdoor eating. E. coli, Salmonella and Campylobacter are examples of some of the many bacteria related to handling raw meats and other perishable food items. That’s why it’s vital to be sure items are refrigerated, well cooked and handled with care.

Outdoor cooks should keep food safety in mind as they are preparing summer feasts. These four words can help you reduce the risk: Clean: Wash your hands with soap and warm water before and after handling food. Wash all dishes, cutting boards and counters with hot soapy water. A spray bottle containing 1/2 tsp of chlorine bleach per litre of water can be used to sanitize these items. Separate: Keep raw foods away from cooked foods to avoid cross-contamination. Store raw meat at the bottom of the fridge or cooler to prevent juices from dripping onto other foods. Always use a clean plate

when taking cooked meat off the barbeque. Cook: Properly cooking food will kill harmful bacteria. Cook all meat to the appropriate internal temperature - see Health Canada’s Safe Internal Cooking Temperatures chart (http://www.healthycanadians.gc.ca/eating-nutrition/ safety-salubrite/cook-temperatures-cuisson-eng.php) for more details. Use a digital food thermometer to measure the inside temperature of cooked meats. Once cooked, keep hot foods at 60ºC or hotter until ready to serve. Chill: Always thaw meat in the fridge, microwave, or under cold running water – never at

room temperature. Do not let cooked or perishable food sit out in the sun or at room temperature for more than two hours. Cool any leftovers right away. Finally, keep cold foods cold at 4ºC or lower. Boys and Girls Club gets refreshing new paint job SUBMIT TED

Sherwin-Williams, led by new store manager Jack Roller, has generously donated paint and volunteer time to brighten up the interior of the Cranbrook Boys and Girls Club Building Blocks Daycare. As a past parent at the Cranbrook Boys and Girls Club, I know that the Club offers excellent services with often limited resources,” Roller said. “At Sherwin Williams, we are so pleased to be able to support the Club in this way. We donated our Emerald brand paint in a semigloss for this high traffic area. The durability and quality of this paint were perfect for this job. And our staff members were happy to volunteer their time on the weekend to do the painting. It’s great for our team to be able to support such a worthy cause.” “We were thrilled when Jack approached us about taking on this project,” said Debbie Morris, Program Director. “This is a huge help to the Club.” Sherwin-Williams is

Making Plans: Ice announce regular season schedule TAYLOR ROCC A Sports Editor

On the eve of the 2016 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft, the Western Hockey League made official its itinerary for the 2016-17 season. The WHL’s schedule was released Monday afternoon, with first puck drop coming Friday, Sept. 23. The Kootenay Ice open the club’s 19th campaign in the East Kootenay by visiting the Scotiabank Saddledome, taking on the Calgary Hitmen on Sept. 23, before returning to Cranbrook for the team’s home-opener, also against the rival Hitmen, on Saturday, Sept. 24. Over a 72-game spread, the Ice play 36 home games and 36 away games, as per the usual. This includes 34 games against Central Division opponents — seven games against each of the Hitmen, Lethbridge Hurricanes, Medicine Hat Tigers and Red Deer Rebels and six games against the Edmonton Oil Kings. The 2015-16 season saw the Ice finish in the basement of the Central Division and entire WHL, going 12-53-6-1. The Ice will take on East Division opposition four times apiece (twice at home, twice on the road) before playing host to each of the B.C. Division teams. In 201516, fans in Cranbrook did not see B.C. Division clubs visit Western Financial Place, while the Ice travelled throughout the province and B.C. Division. The cross-border rivalry between the Kootenay Ice and Spokane Chiefs will continue to rage on, with five border battles set for the 201617 campaign (twice in Cranbrook, three times at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. Additionally, the Ice will visit each of the other four U.S. teams after not doing so in 2015-16. Other than the Chiefs, WHL fans in Cranbrook will not be entertained by U.S. Division teams (Everett Silvertips, Portland Winterhawks, Seattle Thun-

derbirds, Tri-City Americans) in 2016-17. The post-Christmas home-and-home series remains on the schedule for the Kootenay Ice, though the opponent changes in 2016. Whereas the Ice took on the Hitmen in a holiday home-and-home previously, the Lethbridge Hurricanes will visit Cranbrook on Tuesday, Dec. 27, before welcoming the Ice to the Enmax Centre on Wednesday, Dec. 28.

In terms of a weekly breakdown, 25 of 36 (69.4 per cent) Kootenay Ice home games will be played on weekends at Western Financial Place, including 10 on Friday, 11 on Saturday and four on Sunday. The rest of the home schedule is rounded out with six Tuesday contests (16.7 per cent) and five on Wednesdays (13.9 per cent). A particularly special annual date on the Kootenay Ice calendar will appear once again in 2016-17. The team’s annual teddy bear toss game is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 10, when the high-powered Kelowna Rockets pay a visit to Cranbrook. October will feature the most Kootenay Ice home games in any given month this coming season, as the club plays host on eight occasions while only taking to the road for four contests. The lightest month on the Kootenay Ice itinerary comes in February, with nine outings scheduled, including seven at home and only two on the road. The team will play three games in three nights on three separate occasions, the first set for Nov. 25 to 27 (at Red Deer; vs. Swift Current; vs. Edmonton). The season-long road trip for the Kootenay Ice doesn’t come down the pipe until late in the campaign, with a fivegame venture scheduled from Wednesday, March

1, through Tuesday, March 7. Over the fivegame, seven-day swing, the Ice will visit Edmonton, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw and Medicine Hat. Ice fans can look forward to a home-heavy February, with seven of nine games being played in Cranbrook, including a season-high 12-day homestand with four games from Feb. 1 to 12. Additionally, the team will enjoy a fourgame homestand from Oct. 21 to 30. Another note on the eastern travel front, the Ice will only make one trek to Brandon, taking on the defending-champion Wheat Kings on back-to-back nights (Jan. 13 and 14). In 2015-16, the Ice made two separate trips to Brandon. The 792-game WHL regular season concludes Sunday, March 19. The Kootenay Ice regular season schedule comes to a close with in a home-and-home with the Hitmen on Friday, March 17 (at Western Financial Place) and Saturday, March 19 (at Scotiabank Saddledome). All Kootenay Ice home games at Western Financial Place will get underway at 7 p.m., with the exception of Sunday games beginning at 4 p.m. The lone outlier comes Sunday, Oct. 30, when the Ice welcome the Brandon Wheat Kings for a 2 p.m. matinee. The 2017 WHL Playoffs and the race for the Ed Chynoweth Cup will open Friday, March 24. In addition to the regular season slate, the WHL announced Prince George and Edmonton as host cities for the league’s two 2016 CHL Canada/Russia Series in November. Team WHL will take on the Russian National Junior Team in Prince George on Monday, Nov. 7, with the rematch set for Tuesday, Nov. 8, in Edmonton. After being passed over at back-to-back NHL Entry Drafts, Kootenay Ice forward Zak Zborosky is getting an opportunity to prove scouts wrong. The 19-year-old veteran was one of 31 players invited to the 2016 New York Rangers Prospect Development Camp, joining former Ice standout goaltender and Rangers prospect Mackenzie Skapski. Zborosky — a 6-foot, 174-pound native of Regina — heads into his final season of WHL eligibility as a free agent in search of a pro contract after being overlooked at the 2015 and 2016 NHL Entry Drafts. The speedy winger was on the radar of NHL scouts ahead of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, landing on a preliminary watch list of NHL Central Scouting [CSS] early in the 2014-15 campaign.

“We think [Zborosky] is poised to breakout offensively,” said Dan Marr, NHL director of Central Scouting, at the time of Zborosky’s appearance on the CSS radar. “He’s paid his dues. He is a skilled forward. He’s got the skating and the hockey sense to generate some offense for the team… We know he’s a decent play-maker with a good shot. “We think he has the potential to continue to develop as a skill forward and maybe add a little power-forward element to his game.” The 2014-15 season didn’t quite produce the breakout many NHL scouts anticipated, as Zborosky managed 18 goals and 40 points through 72 games. Fast-forward to 201516, relied upon heavily by his team, Zborosky

showed flashes of the potential Marr described. In 58 contests, Zborosky eclipsed the 30-goal plateau, managing 32 markers to go with 36 assists and a career-high 68 points. Rangers Prospect Development Camp runs from June 27 through July 1 at the MSG Training Centre in New York. A number of WHL players will take to the ice, including forwards

Reid Duke (Brandon Wheat Kings; invite), Ryan Gropp (Seattle Thunderbirds; 2015 — second round draft pick), Brad Morrison (Prince George Cougars; 2015 — fourth round), Ty Ronning (Vancouver Giants; 2016 — seventh round) and defenceman Sergey Zborovskiy (Regina Pats; 2015 — third round). Skapski, an Ice alumnus, was a sixth-round selection of the Rangers at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and turned pro to start the 2014-15 season.

Nitros acquire defenceman; KIJHL eliminates crossover play Defenceman Brett Roberts comes to Kimberley from Beaver Valley; KIJHL cancels cross-conference competition

TAYLOR ROCC A Sports Editor

Derek Stuart is wasting no time filling holes in his lineup. The head coach and general manager of the Kimberley Dynamiters addressed a cavernous void on his blue-line, acquiring puck-moving defenceman Brett Roberts (1997) from the Beaver Valley Nitehawks in exchange for future considerations Monday afternoon. “He’s an offensive-minded defenceman that can move the puck and can jump into the rush,” Stuart said Monday afternoon. “He can run a power play, so he’s definitely offensive-minded but at the same time, is pretty sound in his own end. It’s something we definitely need.” Roberts — a 5-foot11, 184-pound native of Grande Prairie, Alta. — registered nine goals

and 20 points in 36 regular season games with the Nitehawks last year. He added a goal and four points in 14 post-season contests on the Beaver Valley blueline. The 2015-16 season was Roberts’ rookie year in the KIJHL, but as a 19-year-old defenceman, there is plenty of opportunity for him to step into a sizeable role for Stuart’s squad this fall. “With the amount of guys that have left and losing the 50 or 60 points that [Jordan] Busch provided, I think that’s going to be an important role,” Stuart said. “Brett can come in, and not be stuck solely with replacing those points himself, but definitely be a big contributor to our offensive production from the backend. “I’m looking for him to be in our first pairing and run one of our power plays as well.”

As it stands, Roberts joins Trey Doell (1997), Devon Langelaar (1997) and Lucas Purdy (1998)

as KIJHL returners to the Dynamiters defensive group. Gone from last year’s KIJHL regular season championship crew are George Bertoia (1998, AJHL Drumheller), Busch (1995, Concordia University of Edmonton), Justin Meier (1995, University of Jamestown) and Tyler Van Steinburg (1998, AJHL Canmore). Notes from the KIJHL annual general meeting Stuart represented the Dynamiters at the KIJHL’s annual general meeting (AGM) this

past weekend in Osoyoos with one particularly significant alteration coming out of the league’s yearly gathering. The KIJHL has gone ahead with the widely controversial decision to eliminate cross-conference competition, beginning in 2016-17. “As far as I understand, it is just for this year and it will be

re-evaluated at the end of the year,” Stuart said. “The general feeling I got from talking to some

coaches, not everyone was too pleased with it. “The few guys I did

speak with, they would much rather have the crossover. You get to see every team in the league. Now, there’s 19 other teams in the league and we’re only playing nine of them. Another 10 of them we don’t get to see and our fans don’t get to see.” According to Stuart, the expected breakdown of the schedule will see teams play divi-

sional opponents eight times (32 games) with four contests coming against each out-of-division opponent within the conference (20 games). The lone opportunity for a Kootenay Conference team to play an O kanagan/Shuswap Conference team won’t come until the 2017 KIJHL championship series.

Dynamiters boost local content with signing of Clarricoates, Sterzer TAYLOR ROCC A Sports Editor

Jerry Bancks always said one of the biggest keys to success was a quality contingent of locally-grown players. For the past few years, the Kimberley Dynamiters were the envy of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, deploying a core of local players including the likes of captain Jason Richter, Jared Marchi, Trevor Van Steinburg and Tyler Van Steinburg, just to name a few. As it stands, Richter is off to pursue post-secondary education while playing for the University of Jamestown Jimmies ACHA Div. 1 men’s hockey program and Marchi has aged out of junior, leaving two significant holes to fill in the contingency of locally-produced Dynamiters. Derek Stuart, head coach and general manager of the Dynamiters, helped address that need as he signed local products Terrell Clarricoates and Caige Sterzer. “It’s really important, first of all, it’s great for the fan base at large to have some local kids and families that they recognize from Kimberley and Cranbrook,” said Jeff Keiver, assistant coach of the Kimberley Dynamiters, Monday afternoon. “It helps with our attendance and the overall attention that the team receives, but it’s also really good for minor hockey systems as well. “Young kids can see their path. We always keep that connection alive so kids [in minor hockey] can really relate to somebody they know.

That path [to junior hockey] is laid out clearly.” Stuart confirmed the signings over the phone from Osoyoos Thursday evening after arriving for the KIJHL annual general meeting. Clarricoates and Sterzer should be names familiar to Nitro Nation, with both having suited up as affiliates this past season. Clarricoates is a 17-year-old forward (5foot-11, 175 pounds) hailing from Cranbrook. He suited up in three regular season games during the 2015-16 season, tallying one goal. “He’s a hard-working player,” Keiver said of Clarricoates. “From what I’ve seen, he’ll go to the dirty areas and he will finish his checks. He’s been a great kid in the dressing room through our playoff run and all that. “He kept his eyes open and he was trying to learn as much as he could from the veteran team that we had last year.” Clarricoates registered two goals and five points in 33 games with the Kootenay Ice of the B.C. Major Midget League (BCMML) in 2015-16. Sterzer is set to turn 16 this August and dressed from three regular season games — registering one assist — as well as two playoff games this past season. At 5-foot-11 and 165 pounds, Sterzer stands to inject some youth into the retooling Dynamiters after spending the bulk of 2015-16 playing with the BCMML Ice, stacking up nine

points in 39 games. “He’s a kid that we’ve been watching growing up and he’s getting a lot bigger,” Keiver said. “He’s going to be able to hopefully make some offensive plays out there for us. “Same as Terrell, he was willing to do everything we asked of him last year in a very limited role. With these younger guys, the coolest thing is that we don’t really know what there ceiling is yet. We’d like to see them play a full season and have high hopes for where they can go. They haven’t really been put in that position yet, so we’re excited to see what they can do.” With Clarricoates and Sterzer under wraps, the Dynamiters have secured a young group of upcoming local talent, including returning forward James Rota and defenceman Lucas Purdy. “It’s a really exciting time for younger players in the Dynamiters system,” Keiver said. “Probably for the first time in two or three years there’s lots of openings in the top-six [forwards], top-four [defencemen], power play, penalty kill. “They’re going to get a really good look at those positions and the same goes for anyone else. For the first time in a couple years we can actually tell our recruits that there’s power-play time, top-six minutes and top-four minutes on the backend for players, whereas in the last couple years we wouldn’t say that. We were pretty honest with our recruiting process that you were going to come in here and really have to

work if you wanted to get those minutes because we had so many veteran guys already established themselves in those roles.” Fans, along with those in Dynamiters hockey operations, will have to play wait-andsee with an additional trio of potential returning locals. Korbyn Chabot, a 16-year-old Cranbrook product, was a ninthround pick (182nd) of the Tri-City Americans at the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft. He is expected to return to Americans camp this fall and is also on the radar of the BCHL’s Surrey Eagles after attending the team’s spring camp earlier this year. The Van Steinburg brothers have signed with the AJHL’s Canmore Eagles and while former Nitro Sawyer Hunt can tell you there are no guarantees, both Van Steinburgs should have a good opportunity to crack the Canmore squad this fall. Matchsticks: The Castlegar Rebels filled their coaching vacancy, announcing the hiring of Bill Rotheisler as head coach and general manager Sunday evening. Rotheisler takes over from Jesse Dorans who accepted the head coach/general manager’s role with the Drayton Valley Thunder of the Alberta Junior Hockey League earlier this spring. Rotheisler spent 2015-16 as an associate coach with the KIJHL’s Creston Valley Thunder Cats and was previously the head coach and general manager of the KIJHL’s Princeton Posse...

Tonight: Go along with someone else’s desires. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Pressure builds to an unprece-

dented level, and you might explode at the most inappropriate moment. Changes seem to be occurring. Don’t fight the inevitable. You will see that embracing an easygoing attitude will make your life easier. Tonight: Go with the flow. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You could be unduly fiery and touchy. How you express your level of irritation could be a lot more serious than you might realize. Perhaps a close associate will take one of your comments in the wrong vein. Be careful. Tonight: Get a good night’s sleep. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Open up to a new approach or a different way of handling issues. You initially might be resistant, but ultimately you’ll decide that you have nothing to lose. Take your time when making a decision, and get past a need to be frivolous or wild. Tonight: The unexpected happens. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Getting back to basics will make a difference, and it will determine which direction would be best for you to head in. Go back

to that level if you’re faced with a question that you can’t seem to answer. You’ll find your way quickly once you start to focus. Tonight: Out late. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Others will listen to what you say, and also will let you know if they disagree. You could be taken aback by how someone lets you know his or her viewpoint. Unfortunately, this is likely to keep you from sharing with this person in the future. Tonight: Somewhere other than home. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You might be too tired to pursue a long-term goal that is important to you. You could drop your defenses and become careless with your spending if you are not careful. Be more in touch with your needs, even in the face of someone else’s demands. Tonight: Reach out to a friend. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Several years ago, our son lived with a very immature young woman. We tried to make her feel welcome, but she had no interest in getting to know us. The only thing she ever asked was how much our son would inherit. She then had an affair. Our son asked whether he should leave her. My husband said yes, but I told my son that people make mistakes and it was his decision. He stayed. A few months later, she was worried he might leave, so she lied about using the pill and got pregnant. The baby was christened and baptized with only her family present. We saw the photos on Facebook. When they got married shortly after, they never said a word to us. We decided not to hold a grudge. We bought a house where they could live for $200 a month in rent, and gave them $40,000 to furnish it. Our new daughter-in-law said we should let them live there rent-free and they stopped paying rent. They also didn’t take care of the house. So we sold it, and when we didn’t give them the proceeds, she told everyone that we were terrible people and had stolen their money. They now have two children and a third on the way. We are not allowed to see the grandchildren. Our son calls us once a month, but he’s afraid to tell his wife. We just wrote a new will and are giving them nothing. We haven’t told our son this, but we’ve told our other children that they can give their brother a share if they choose. But his wife has also cut off contact with the siblings, as well as our son’s grandparents. It’s been five years. We would still welcome her, but we aren’t holding our breath. Our son says he’s OK with this. He says he’s not abused. Sometimes there is no happy ending. -- Resigned to Our Situation Dear Resigned: We are so sorry your son married such an unkind, immature person. Also, that he is too cowardly to take a stand, fearful that she might leave. But that is highly unlikely. We wonder how your daughter-inlaw would react if she learned that you might reconsider including them in your will if you were allowed to spend time with the grandchildren. She sounds mercenary enough to think about it. It’s good that you have other children to lean on. Our condolences. Dear Annie: I just returned from a bridal shower and learned that a few of us were not invited to the wedding. I am a good friend of the bride and of her mother. The other women at my table said, “See you at the wedding.” I stayed silent. Several of us are baking the cake and cookies for the wedding. Most of us who are doing the baking are not invited. When did it become OK to invite people to a shower and not the wedding? -- Old-Fashioned Dear Old-Fashioned: It is not OK to invite friends and family to a shower and not the wedding. (Work showers fall into a different category.) It is especially rude to ask these same people to bake for the event, unless you are charging them a fee. However, there is a possibility that the bride assumes you will be in attendance anyway since you are preparing the desserts. You might talk to the bride’s mother and clear it up. We’d hate for there to be a misunderstanding. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. COOPER, Mary It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Mary Alice Cooper, on June 17th, 2016, after a brief illness. Mom was strong to the end and passed peacefully surrounded by all of her children. She was predeceased by her husband, Garry Nathan Cooper, her infant daughter Laurea, her father George, her mother Dorothy, and her sister Ruth. She is survived by her children Russ (Marie), Len, Garry, Floyd (April), and Kendra (Paul), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her best friend Barb. Mom loved Bingo, the colors red and pink, camping, being with family and friends, and her cat Sadie. Thank you to all of the residents, management and staff at Mountainside Village. You welcomed our mother with open arms and warm hearts. She truly loved living there with all of her new friends. We would like to thank Dr. Stanley and Dr. Owatz for the care that they provided our mother. You both showed her such compassion and respect. She truly appreciated your continued professionalism. She will be missed deeply every day and in every way, but we all know that she is at peace now. By request, a funeral will not be held. There will be a small family gathering at a later date. Alexandra Butts of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services™ has been entrusted with arrangements. You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence at the family’s online register at www.myalternatives.ca

10 Minutes to Disaster!

Dogs (and cats) cool themselves by panting and by releasing heat through their paws. On summer days the air and upholstery in your vehicle can heat up to high temperatures that make it impossible for pets to cool themselves. The risk is real! If it is 26C outside, inside a car, even with the windows cracked, the temperature can reach 37C in 10 minutes and 43C in 20 minutes. If your dog’s temperature reaches 41C cell and organ damage begins to occur. Please leave your animals at home when running out to do errands. If you do spot a dog or any animal in a car on a hot day please call the BCSPCA hotline at 1-855-622-7722 or the local RCMP immediately.

and Ministry of Children and Family Development, Jones postponed grad ceremonies planned for tonight and tomorrow. “We will be looking at a date in the future to host the ceremony and activities that the students rightly deserve,” Jones wrote. “Knowing that a lot of preparation and excitement goes into graduation, we recognize this will be a great disappointment to students and families. However, we do ask that they respect the cancellation and not gather at the school.” Jones asked parents to be “extra vigilant” with any “grad activities, parties or events where students may congregate this weekend.” Jones said he couldn’t share any details about the threat because a police investigation is underway. However, “I assure you the nature of the threat warranted the action we have taken.” RCMP Insp. Tom Roy said he couldn’t provide any other information either. “This is still a very active ongoing investigation right now,” he said in an email to the Star. “We are still in the process of collecting additional information with regards to the events occurring at Mount Sentinel.” Mount Sentinel has Grades 7 to 12 and a total enrollment of about 300.
