Wild Rapids will stop flowing after 2016 Town buys lakeshore property where water park currently sits TODD COLIN VAUGHAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Wild Rapids Waterslide Park will turn the water off at the end of 2016. Once demolished, the land will be redeveloped by the town who has purchased the land. The purchase was for $4,995,000 for 3.5 acres of land plus another 1.5 acres which is included in an existing license of occupation with the Province of Alberta. The purchase does not include the waterslide structure which will be demolished by the owner following the 2016 summer season. Wild Rapids General Manager Charlie Everest said that this “difficult choice” came entirely from the tough economics of running a 34-year-old water park. “Every year, we strive to make it a safe fun-family place,” he said “But the last couple years has shown that essentially every aspect of the water park – including the circulatory systems and heating systems – need to be replaced. “Essentially it is 34 years old and to keep it safe and upgraded to the potential the owner would like it – it would require millions of dollars of investment.” The park is currently up to code for the 2016 season is diligently checked by both staff and Alberta Health Services. Everest, who has lived in Sylvan Lake for 15 years and has managed the water park for 13 years understands that this is a difficult transition for Central Albertans. “It has been a destination for Central Albertans and from people in Calgary and Edmonton for decades,” he said. “We didn’t take that lightly, but unfortunately outdoor water parks in Canada, with only a twomonth season, are not economically viable.” He added that to stay open, the cost of maintenance would eventually fall down to the customer which wouldn’t be viable financially for a young
family. The decision to close Wild Rapids came after a nearly four-year attempt to sell the park to new operators to keep the slides flowing, however “interest in buying the old girl” was not there. The park will remain open for the rest of the 2016 season, which is good news for the people who have been coming to the park since it opened. “There are a lot of people who went to this park when they were seven years old and now they have grandkids,” Everest said. “We will have our ‘last-year’ fun days.” Luckily for Lakers, the land will not sit idle for long. “It’s not all doom and gloom,” Everest said. “After the slides come down – the town will do a good job with the beautification process.” Sean McIntyre was thrilled for the prospect of this land in media release from the Town of Sylvan Lake. “This is a unique and tremendously important parcel of land,” he said. “We’ve heard time and time again that public access to water is a priority for our residents and that added public space along our lake is needed. “For the town to stake a claim to prime lakeshore property, we’re opening up a world of possibilities for our community.” The media release stated that there is no current

Brexit an economic danger born from xenophobia UK splits from EU to the tune dangerous rhetoric Brexit could have much more than financial ramifications for the world. On Wednesday, June 23, the citizens of the United Kingdom decided in a close referendum, 52 per cent to 48 per cent, to leave the European Union partly due to what former London Mayor Boris Johnson says is the UK losing the equivalent of over $620 million Canadian dollars per week to the EU. The event has been labelled Brexit by the world-wide media. This is a staggering sum of money and according to John Oliver’s late night show “Last Week Tonight” incredibly misleading. The sum, according to a segment on Sunday, June 19, is actually closer to around $335 million Canadian dollars, and to say that Britain would be losing this money is incorrect because it would be nearly that amount of money each week for the UK to “enter into the global market.” To put it simply, these numbers do not add up to
making a referendum decision that so immediately, drastically and negatively affects global markets, with the pound-sterling dropping by 8 per cent in only one day. This means that there could be other motivations beyond simply financial ones in a country, traditionally known for prudency. Timothy B. Lee of Vox. com provided a list of the “7 most important arguments for Britain to leave the EU”, which provides some insight into the reasoning of the 52 per cent who voted for leaving. There reasons were: • The EU threatens British sovereignty • The EU is strangling the UK in burdensome regulations • The EU entrenches corporate interests and prevents radical reforms • The EU was a good idea, but the euro is a disaster • The EU allows too many immigrants • The UK could have a more rational immigration system outside the EU
TODD COLIN VAUGHAN
SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
• The UK could keep the money it currently sends to the EU The majority of these reasons can make some fiscal or reasonable sense if the correct rose coloured lens is applied, however the reasons regarding immigration could perhaps be indicative of a global xenophobia that appears to have taken shape in many more places then just Britain and could be the true reason for British dissatisfaction. As the world has become a more global community, many countries have been forced to deal with issues of immigration, tolerance and integration. In most countries, there has been a reactionary response – most notably being the political rants by Republican incumbent presidential nominee
Donald Trump, who has run a campaign demonizing Latino Americans and peoples of middle eastern descent and even has suggested that American job losses are the result of the immigration of these peoples. Considering that Brexit was originally a political dream of an extreme farright party, its astonishing that more middle-leaning conservatives would take to the movement so readily after many British politicians denounced the xenophobic Trump campaign. This being proved during the week of January 22, when parliament seriously debated disallowing Trump from entering the country over his anti-Muslim rhetoric – a debate that had bipartisan support. Perhaps the key to British right-leaning politicians hiding their worries over immigration has been by masking it by the other five points previously mentioned. The argument then would be that this plan is 71 per cent
effective – if the questionable financial numbers put forth by the far right holds true and if Britons truly believe that their sovereignty and financial security is threatened. That is clearly a majority, but can a country justify legislation and separation if the plan is based on 29 per cent xenophobia and racism? Perhaps it can if majority rule is the sole way of deciding what our society should value. In western democracies, a majority is how many choices are decided. It is a strong representation of the common will of multiple individuals. The financial ramifications of this majority decision will not be made clear for quite some time, but hopefully a majority of Britons won’t use their majority to demonize peoples of other communities - many of whom who have carried British Passports and ran British businesses for decades. reporter@sylvanlakenews.com
HEALTH & WELLNESS
Without this you are lost You hear it all the time. The dreams, hopes, goals, plans, intentions - all of the things people want to accomplish and get done or have, but there is usually a single step that is missing in order for them succeed. In my experience, the key ingredient that controls all success or failure is action. A goal without action is a dream or a wish. It’s true and we see it all the time in the fitness world. I too am guilty of it. I want to be more fit, more lean - we say as we eat a donut. I want to eat better, but without setting aside time to cook or prepare healthy food, I too am stuck just grabbing whatever as the day steamrolls over me. It’s one of the reasons I love to sign up for big races. It’s an external goal that pulls on me as soon as I register. It demands action by virtue of the deadline. That is powerful stuff! It’s the reason I have a coach and truly believe in having one. My
coach sets up my in it. Plus we had all the classes to create plan based on my race season, current strength, the action fitness and work steps. load. Nothing make a meal from it. Useless. The latest six week program I ran wrong with that we just gave a was a ladies only program which refund. Again, it does illustrate: a involved just that: a cookbook full plan without action, is just a wish of healthy recipes and a meal plan and wishes change nothing. So write out your goals today. that made sure the people in the challenge used nearly every recipe Make them specific and make
them about actions, not results. For example: if your goal is to drop 10 lbs of fat in the next two months, great! But that is not an ‘action goal’ and you can’t actually ‘go drop 10 lbs’ as a thing to do no matter how hard you tried. What you can do is set goals that will lead you to that 10lb weight change. Set up goals like: Go to the gym and attend class three times this week. Spend four hours on Sunday preparing healthy foods and placing them in the fridge and freezer so they are ready to eat all week. Drink two litres of water each day while cutting out pop or sugary drinks. Go for a 20 minute walk after supper five nights this week. Get at least 7.5 hours of sleep each night. Do you see how all of those things have to do with action towards the goal, but none of them involve the actual goal? That is the key. If you do those things that 10 pounds does not stand a chance! An alcoholic who caused a three-vehicle crash near Sylvan Lake two years ago will serve weekends in jail and lose his driving privileges for two more years. Sylvan Lake business owner Robert Ritchie, 41, was arrested at the scene on June 12, 2014, when RCMP were called to a collision on Hwy 20 at the Aspelund Road, three kilometres north of Jarvis Bay. Police determined that a Porsche Carrera was speeding north on Hwy 20 when it slammed into the back end of a Volkswagen car, pushing it into the path of an oncoming semi. In an agreed statement of facts read for Judge John Holmes in Red Deer provincial court on Tuesday, Crown prosecutor Randy McDonald said that there were no major injuries as a result of the collision. Tested for blood alcohol levels back at the detachment, Ritchie blew .320 — four times the legal limit of .08 (80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood). He was charged with impaired driving, driving while over the legal limit and dangerous driving. In court on Tuesday and represented by defence counsel Will Willms, he pleaded guilty to the second charge. The other two were withdrawn as a result. In Canada, people arrested for impaired driving and driving over the legal limit can be convicted of either offence, but not both. In an agreed statement of facts drafted during plea negotiations, MacDonald and Willms asked for a sentence of 60 days to be served intermittently, with a two-year driving prohibition and 18 months of probation. MacDonald noted in offering the recommendation that Ritchie had two prior convictions for similar offences in Ontario, dated in 2003 and 2006, and had served 21 days in prison for the second offence. While those two convictions are “somewhat dated,” they should be considered in sentencing, said MacDonald. Speaking on his client’s behalf, Willms said Ritchie has recognized that he has a serious addiction and has taken steps to change his life, including joining Alcoholics Anonymous, making regular contact with his sponsor and taking treatment from a private psychologist based in Calgary. “He is well aware that his days of alcohol consumption are over,” said Willms, explaining that Ritchie would benefit from a period of probation to help him get the counselling he needs to deal with his addiction. In his address to the court, Ritchie apologized for his actions, said he was thankful that no one was seriously hurt and admitted that he had slipped up twice since the collision. Ritchie said that besides being the sole income earner for his wife and child, he has seven employees who rely on him for their livelihood. Holmes said he found the sentencing submissions to be reasonable, sentencing Ritchie to 60 days in jail to be served on weekends, starting July 1. He prohibited him from driving in Canada for two years, placed him on 18 months of probation and, as a condition of his probation, ordered that he pay $1,500 by Dec. 31 in restitution to the driver of the Volkswagen for costs not covered by insurance. bkossowan@reddeeradvocate.com.

Library expands its scope Grant allows for new Technology, Exploration and Learning lab TODD COLIN VAUGHAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Silicon Valley is sending some of their tech to the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library.
The library has received two grants, one from the Sylvan Lake Community Endowment fund for $3378.77 and one from Telus, that will allow them to purchase a new Technology, Exploration and Learning lab. The unique part about this lab is that is doesn’t require a
physical computer lab to effectively run programming according to Library Director Caroline Vandriel. The lab, according to Vandriel, is “basically getting as many lap top computers as we can, that we can move anywhere in the library, so that that we can run programs when all of the other computers are being utilized.” The computers are being outfitted with important programs like Microsoft Office, photo-editing software and Minecraft. This boost of software allows Vandriel and her staff to expand its in-library programming. “What I have used the previous lab that we borrowed from Parkland in the past was resume-writing workshops,” he said, while adding that her other staff has run very popular programs for pre-teens and teenagers with the program Minecraft. The portability of this lab also allows the library staff to perform some community outreach – especially at the seniors centre across the road. “We go to the senior centre fairly regularly and do iPad instruction and sometimes with their phones as well,” she said. “If we had a lab that we can take along there, it would take us beyond just the library. “We can look at programming a whole different way. The lap-tops are purchased through Parkland Regional Libraries, which allows the Sylvan Lake Library to receive discounts on the hardware, as well as having the necessary software preloaded onto the devices. Luckily for Sylvan Lakers, these devices will be available for lending at anytime, rather then just being for special programs. Vandriel said “when all of our public computers are in use or when someone wants to work on something more private like resumes, bills and responding to personal emails,” these devices will be available. She added that the library is “incredibly thankful for the funding we have received” and that “we are really looking forward to doing some exploring ourselves. reporter@sylvanlakenews.com

Canada Post strike looming Town encourages shift to paperless billing TODD COLIN VAUGHAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS As negotiations continue to stagnate between Canada Post and their worker’s union – Sylvan Lake residents could be facing an impending mail stoppage as early as Saturday, July 2 if talks fail to progress. According to the media blog on canadapost.ca, a labour disruption would mean Canada Post “Will not operate. Mail and Parcels will not be delivered, and no new items will be accepted. Any mail and parcels within the postal system during a work disruption will be secured and delivered as quickly as possible once operations resume.” If you have parcels that need to be sent out, they must be sent out no later than June 27 for regional expedited parcels. June 29 for xpresspost national and regional and June 29 for all other forms of parcels. The latest offer by Canada Post was tabled on Saturday June 25 to Canadian Union of Postal Workers. A work stoppage for Sylvan Lakers, according to Communications Officer Joanne Gaudet, would mean that all utility bills will no longer be delivered in the mail, however this does not mean that they do not need to be paid. “The onus is on them to either contact us and find out how much they owe and be extra diligent with what their bills are,” she said. Fortunately, the town has recently cut down the amount of mail inserts being delivered to each home, limiting them down to generally budget related concerns. The Town is also fortunate to be on a two month cycle, meaning that the strike would only affect municipal billing if it extends past this point. Another option for Lakers, according to Gaudet, is to sign up to the Town’s e-billing program, which has been available for about one year and has 12 per cent Town usage rate. To sign up for this program, Sylvan Lakers need to email ut@sylvanlake.ca and include their preferred email, their account number, their address they wish to register and that that they intend to receive ebills. “Hopefully the more people that see it – the more people will find it a valuable tool for if and when we have strikes,” Gaudet said. reporter@sylvanlakenews.com
A complete mail disruption could take place on Saturday, June 2.

Writing a Brand New Part The teacher announced that the class was going to perform “Cinderella” for the school play. Everyone shot their hand up screaming for the part they wanted to play. Finally the teacher got to Norman and asked him which part he wanted in the play. Norman proudly announced “I want to be the pig!” The teacher said, “Well Norman, I don’t think there is a pig in Cinderella!” Norman quickly replied, “There is now!” She agreed that he could be the pig and Norman made a costume and then without a word just followed Cinderella around the stage giving expression to her emotion. If she was happy Norman the pig wiggled and bounced. If she was sad, his head would go down and he was rather despondent. When it was time for Cinderella to leave with the handsome prince, Norman the pig stood and danced on two feet, and twirled and then barked like a dog! The teacher was very impressed and told Norman how well he was doing, but reminded him that “Pigs don’t bark!” Norman said, “Well, this one does!” OK, she said, you can bark like a dog. On the night of the play, Norman drooped and wiggled and did his best, and he barked loud and clear at the end. It was Norman who go the standing ovation at the curtain call. Where in life is there no part for you to play, but you know you belong somewhere? Maybe this is the time to be creative and make up a special part!! Where is the Norman in you?

STORY COURTESY RED DEER ADVOCATE A dangerous driving suspect allegedly nabbed on dash cam will go to trial in December. Sylvan Lake RCMP were called to investigate earlier this year when one of a group of car buffs submitted a video showing a car making a dangerous bid to pass two others while northbound on Hwy 2 near Bowden. The video captured from the complainant’s dash camera shows a car passing between two northbound vehicles and then taking the shoulder to pass another before speeding away. The suspect’s vehicle was located about an hour later by Sylvan Lake RCMP, who then launched an investigation. Calgary resident Kunal Anand was later charged with a single count of dangerous driving. Anand entered a plea of not guilty on Wednesday at the case management office of Red Deer provincial court. His trial is booked for Dec. 1.

Town adopts first stand-alone Social Master Plan Quality of life at forefront of new plan BY JENNA SWAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS The 2016 Sylvan Lake Community Social Master Plan has been completed on schedule and was adopted by Council for implementation over the course of the next three years. This is the first stand-alone social master plan for the town of Sylvan Lake with the document proposing a number of pro-active strategies to address the quality of life of residents. The plan was based on the findings of the 2015 Social Needs Assessment, community focus groups; Social Master Plan Sub-Committees (Housing, income and Employment; Health and
“THIS ISN’T A TOWN OF SYLVAN LAKE PLAN, THIS IS A PLAN FOR THE COMMUNITY THAT WILL BE IMPLEMENTED BY THE COMMUNITY,” JANE SOMERVILLE, NICHOLS APPLIED MANAGEMENT Wellness; Transportation; Community Engagement and Safety) and a community open house. Jane Somerville of Nichols Applied Management stated eight factors were deemed most important to the Town of Sylvan Lake during the creation of the plan - presented to Town Council on the evening of June 27.
She stated residents needed the following: have a sense of purpose, enjoy their natural surroundings, are able to meeting their basic needs, have supports and services to meet their mental health needs, have supports and services to meet their physical needs, are engaged positively in their community, have strong healthy relationships and feel safe in their community. The plan delves into a number of longer-term goals to meet over the next three years ranging from housing, income and employment to health and wellness as well as transportation and also includes community safety and engagement. “There is quite a bit of enthusiasm for the plan from those who have been involved with the plan in the sub-committees,” explained Somerville to Council. “The plan also includes a plan on monitoring and evaluation and a section on the collaboration that will be required for moving forward with the implemen-
tation of the plan. “This isn’t a Town of Sylvan Lake plan, this is a plan for the community that will be implemented by the community.” Mayor Sean McIntyre added a ‘monumental amount of work’ has led to the day where a Social Master Plan was in place but that he was proud to see it come to fruition. “First of all through our Social Needs Assessment then through the creation of the Plan itself,” said McIntyre on the amount of work that led them to where they were today. “Probably hundreds of hours of FCSS staff time, the community services standing committee, the sub committees and I love the idea. “I think the amount of work really does make it a plan by the community for the community.” Within each of the sub-sections in the Social Master Plan there are identified goals, what is wished to be accomplished in the next three years and planned actions on how to get there. Over the course of the coming weeks, the Sylvan Lake News hopes to examine each of the sub-sections within the Social Master Plan and provide more details as per what citizens can expect to see over the next three years.

diverse economic opportunities and it is a year-round destination for family fun, tournaments, festivals and relaxation.” Aside from the release of the logo, residents likely won’t see many changes around town until a hard launch of the new brand is underway later - with Town staff estimating this process to take place in late 2016 or 2017. Development of a communication strategy for the brand strategy is currently underway with Joanne Gaudet, communications officer for the Town stating to Council during the meeting how development of a communication plan for the new brand will be paramount in order to familiarize the public with the new look. During the presentation
given by Ion Design there was indication of changing banners on Lakeshore Drive and the addition of other banners throughout the Town. “I like the calculated approach being taken by staff here,” said Mayor Sean McIntyre in regards to the way the brand will be rolled out. “The other part of the calculated process I appreciate is
that of Ion Design taking time to interact with our community and find out who we actually are. “At the time of our final reveal we will have something that our residents will be able to own and say, ‘That does reflect my home town’ , so overall I am pleased with by Ion and now they are passing the torch back to our staff.” editor@sylvanlakenews

our family over the past 6 years. This is to also to include the janitorial staff that put up with the mess all the kids leave. Job well done for a crew that doesn’t always get recognized. We have dealt with all sorts of issues that the staff has helped us through, whether it was great times or terrible times for our family. I really felt that we could turn to any staff member there for anything, (making sure my kid had food when I forgot to pack lunch or someone to help with troubled times). The school really prides themselves on building confidence and independence in their students, and has a strong focus on academics. To all the teachers and EA’s we have had the pleasure of having over the past 6 years THANK YOU. We have gone through some easy times and some frustrating struggles with education and no matter who was teaching or whom the EA was, I was always well informed and supported, as were my kids. Admin ladies must also be commended for dealing with all my calls over the years, whether it was something stupid or an emergency, you ladies always dealt with whatever it was with a calm and reassuring voice. To Don Rattray and Tracey Lynn we have had tears both good and bad and you were always there if I needed either one of you and want to say thank you for all the support over the years. You make a very strong team together and will continue to be amazing role models for future children coming through your school. Already missing Fox Run School. Kim Matthews

Our Lady of the Rosary students learn about sun safety Lessons applicable to all ages TODD COLIN VAUGHAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Don’t let a day at the lake leave you fried. On Friday, June 24 – University of Alberta pharmacy student and local employee for the pharmacy at Shoppers Drug Mart, Courtney Link, presented to young students from Our Lady of the Rosary School about the importance of protecting their skin against the damaging affects of sunburns. This information, which also applies to anyone en-
joying the summer sun in Sylvan Lake, is important because prolonged exposure to the sun could eventually lead to skin cancer. Link stresses it is important for students to learn sun protection at a young age “just so they know right away because they could prevent many things like sun burns and eventually skin cancer. It’s just so they can protect themselves.” She added that the program is an initiative by the University to spread awareness to communities about skin care.
University of Alberta Pharmacy student Courtney Link presented to students at Our Lady of the Rosary School about the importance of sun safety on Friday, June 24.
According to skincancer.org, the best methods to protect yourself from the sun are • by seeking the shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. • avoiding burning • avoid tanning and UV tanning beds • using clothing that covers your skin • Using sunscreen • Keeping newborns out the sun The guidelines also stressed that you should regularly check your skin from head to toe and see a physician every year regarding skin care. Link added that “everyone needs to protect themselves from the sun.” reporter@sylvanlakenews.com

Dust off the trophies: It’s awards season H.J. Cody honours athletes TODD COLIN VAUGHAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Its time to polish the silver – it’s awards night at H.J. Cody. On Monday, June 21, Lakers Athletics celebrated their sporting achievements for the 2015-16 season. The evening saw multiple awards being handed out, with each team handing out coach’s award, most valuable player awards and most improved player awards. The school also handed out multiple special awards that reward
students for extra dedication to Lakers Athletics. Jason Chatwood, Athletics Director for H.J. Cody School, was pleased with the growth in his programs this year. “It was an awesome year for the school’s athletics program,” he said. “Probably the most successful season we have ever had.” He added these successes included the football team winning league for the second straight year, the girls and boys volleyball team qualifying for provincials, the boys basketball team winning league and multiple athletes going to provincials from badminton, track and field and
cross – country. For Chatwood, it’s nice to “acknowledge all the teams, coaches and athletes” who contributed to this year of sport. “It was a celebration and a year in review,” he said. “It was a pretty special year for all our teams.” The individual awards are handed out by the teams specific coaches, while the Athlete of the Year awards are decided by committee based on a points system. “That’s not solely what the system is based on,” added Chatwood. “The committee will talk and discuss which kids are the most deserving.” continued on page 19
Kassidy Glasgow, Anna Carlson, Cassidy Klein took home some top awards after a successful H.J. Cody Athletics season.
Alyssa McGregor, Luke Marshall, Mataya Rideout were the standouts for Grade 9 athletics at H.J. Cody.

Award season continued from page 18 It is difficult for Chatwood and his staff to see some of these students go, after working so closely with them over the years. “When you’re spending so much time with these students – you see them grow,” he said. “You’re losing these kids but they have such a bright future ahead of them.” He added that many of the athletes will be going on to compete athletically at the collegiate level. While many students are moving on, many remain to carry on the tradition of athletic excellence at H.J. Cody. “Our football team will start up before school starts. Our volleyball kids will start training the first week back,” Chatwood said. “Those fall sport teams start right off the bat.”
He added that the coaches are already busy talking and looking ahead to next year, which includes discussing players, schedules and what tournaments you want to go to. He said it’s important deciding “what is going to be the best thing to help the teams be successful and help the kids be as successful as they can.” While next year is fast approaching, Chatwood can’t help but think about this year. “It’s a year I’m going to remember,” he said. “We got a lot of banners up this year and it’s something the school should really be proud of. “All the kids supported each other and there were nights when the gym or the field was just packed.” reporter@sylvanlakenews.com
