The weather was lovely, the pancakes were tasty, the music was terrific. Kimberley celebrated another First Saturday on July 5 and the verdict was... great fun.
New this year was the Bed Race, and it was embraced with great enthusiasm by eight team entrants. This event was organized by super-volunteer Jim Webster and drew a good crowd for a 10 a.m. start Saturday morning.

Bed Race From Page 1 “This didn’t slow things down, as the teams just improvised and raced with one corner lifted off the ground. The bed races were proceeded by the Kidz Bed Pan relay with more than a little water spilt along the way. All the fun was for a good cause with $1111 dollars raised and donated to the Cranbrook Kimberley Hospice Society. Special thanks needs to go the The Marysville Pub, Sullivan Pub and Montana’s for donating prizes to the top three teams. The Elks club has already committed a donation towards the 2017 race which will be held on Canada, July 1st, 2017. Western Financial donated the trophy and the race was organized by First Saturday’s and the Kootenay Orienteering Club. Cranbrook Councillor Shypitka to run in Kootenay East TREVOR CRAWLEY
A Cranbrook city councillor is eyeing the jump to provincial politics, as Tom Shypitka has announced his intent to run for the B.C. Liberal nomination in the Kootenay East riding. Shypitka, who was elected into municipal office in 2014, has deep ties to the region and is eager for the opportunity to make the leap from civic to provincial politics. “At the municipal level, at the local level, you can help out, but only to a certain degree,” said Shypitka. “We go to UBCM (Union of British Columbia Municipalities) and we pitch our cases for what is needed in our area and we are geographically different than down on the coast and so our issues are different. “At a provincial level, as an MLA, I’ll be able to address those issues firsthand. I can get to those issues, and in
turn, help the electorate in this region.” Shypitka made the announcement on Wednesday evening with a throng of supporters at the Cranbrook Curling Club. He is the is the second candidate to get into the race for the B.C. Liberal nomination, following former Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks’ announcement late last week. Even though his time on city council has been relatively short, he’s learned some valuable lessons that he can draw from in his quest to become the B.C. Liberal nominee and the region’s MLA. “First thing I’ve taken away from city council and the Regional District [of East Kootenay] is learning to really listen,” Shypitka said. “It’s one thing to have one ear open, but you’ve got to have them both open. “And common sense. A common sense approach is huge. I find in the short term that

A lot of the times it’s just knowing the facts and doing a little research, doing a little digging and talking to constituents or the land owner or the property owner and finding out what their take is.”
Shypitka sees land use issues around various groups such as hunters, recreational users, guide outfitters, and anglers as one of his priorities. “That’s why we’re here, we come here to recreate and everyone wants it for themselves,”
Open fire prohibition Campfires still allowed F O R T H E TOW N S M A N
Effective at noon Pacific Time on Monday, July 4, Category 2 open fires were prohibited throughout the Southeast Fire Centre to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety. This prohibition is in addition to the Category 3 open fire prohibition that came into effect in the Southeast Fire Centre on June 3. Anyone intending to conduct a Category 2 open fire anywhere in the Southeast Fire Centre must extinguish it by noon on July 4. This prohibition will remain in place until the public is otherwise notified. Specifically, this order prohibits: • The burning of any waste, slash or other materials • Stubble or grass fires of any size over any area • The use of fireworks, sky lanterns or
burning barrels of any size or description • The use of binary exploding targets (e.g. for rifle target practice) • The use of air curtain burners • This prohibition does not ban campfires that are a half-metre high by a half-metre wide or smaller, and it does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes. This prohibition covers all BC Parks, Crown lands and private lands, but does not apply within the boundaries of a local government that has forest fire prevention bylaws and is serviced by a fire department. Please check with local authorities for any other restrictions before lighting any fire. The Southeast Fire Centre extends from the U.S. border in the south to Mica Dam in the north, and from the Okanagan Highlands and Monashee Mountains in the west to the B.C.-Alberta border in the east. It includes the Selkirk Natural Resource Dis-
trict and the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District. Campfires are currently allowed in the Southeast Fire Centre, but anyone lighting a campfire must maintain a fireguard by removing flammable debris from around the campfire area and must have a hand tool or at least eight litres of water available nearby to properly extinguish the fire. A campfire should not be lit or kept burning in windy conditions. Make sure the fire is fully extinguished and the ashes are cold to the touch before leaving the area for any length of time. To report a wildfire or irresponsible behaviour call 1 800 6635555 or *5555 from a cell phone. Information from the public is crucial to ensuring wildfires are responded to as soon as possible. It’s your responsibility to know what the current bans and restrictions are for the use of fire in your area. Serious fines and pen-
alties can result for not adhering to these rules while in the jurisdiction of the BC Wildfire Service.

he said. “It can’t be that way. We have to find that balance and find what’s most equitable for ev-
erybody.” Other matters of concern include beefing up wildfire fire mitigation and interface programs, supporting the coal mines in the Elk Valley, growing local economies, and forest and wildlife management — particularly the declining ungulate population. “We’ve got some wildlife issues and those are going to have to be addressed,” Shypitka said. “I’ve been to a few workshops and forums regarding wildlife and the declining population of our ungulates and elk and deer and moose and we’ve got to do something about it.” Shypitka also gave a nod to outgoing MLA Bill Bennett, who has represented the riding for the last 16 years.

ater has featured a great deal in my long life. I don’t remember my father trying to drown me when I was very young or even, as he claimed, rescuing me from a sea-side wave that tumbled me over. But I must have been all over that nonsense when we moved to North Wales on the edge of the Irish Sea. Water didn’t bother me at all by then. I even washed voluntarily in it as well as swam for hours in it. I became a bit of as show-off, especially if there were girls present when we boys dived off the local pier. I also developed a special stroke that I used against the waves the Irish kept sending towards us. The headmaster of our school saw me at the local pool and kindly described my style as ‘a bag full of stones trying not to drown’. I was happy; I didn’t usually get accolades like that. I must have used that stroke when I swam for my college later on — one length of a relay only and definitely free-style — and I am positive I embarrassed the heck out of the girl who I later asked to marry me; she was an accomplished life-saver.
In fact, when I did propose, the lady didn’t hear me. We were immersed in the Avon River right where Willy Shakespeare used to make a fool of himself with Anne Hatheway when I popped the question, but the lady didn’t hear. This was due to the fact that she was wearing a swimming cap or that she was staggered by my unique swimming style. We got that sorted later and, blissfully married, moved on to a converted canal barge, surrounded by water, as our first home. We didn’t swim in the chilly canal on purpose although my lovely wife almost did when the gangPeter plank slipped in midwinter Warland and she had a quick dip. On a nearby boat lived a young architect whose mother used to trot down the tow-path and tidy up her son’s slovenly house-boat keeping. That extra cold winter that my spouse opted to take a dip, the architect’s mother trotted down the tow-path and risked crossing the ice to get on with her chores. Unfortunately, the ice wasn’t up to par and she went through, up to the oxters, as they said in Britain back then. The man that might have become a hero and affected her rescue came cycling along the tow-path at that moment in time and he did stop. He stared at the woman apparently drowning in the canal and ut-

tered the time-honoured words: “You awlright, missus?” She, British to the core, replied, “Fine, thank you.” And so her wouldbe rescuer cycled off. The Major (ex-army retired), who made his home on another nearby boat, was hesitant about a rescue because he had never been introduced to the lady, but eventually, she was hauled clear and taken to the nearby pub where everyone had a good, stiff drink to celebrate. I, unfortunately, missed all that excitement. However, we made sure that our offspring learned to swim properly and frequently threw them into any nearby water so that not one of them has developed a stroke like mine. At first our daughter swam like the family dog but trained instructors at the U.B.C pool straightened her out; our son, however, although he was inclined to shake himself over us after a dip, swam properly from the very start. My parents’ forebodings as to my tendency to get into hot water almost came true when I was about to immerse myself in the waters of a local forest hot-springs. Whilst I was cavorting naughtily in the buff someone pointed out that the area was noted for its poison ivy. I fled. Having been warned that I was likely to get myself into ‘hot water’ if I kept on doing ‘daft things’ that was a narrow escape but, so far, it has been mainly cold water and things have gone swimmingly.

LETTERS to the EDITOR
I read with interest and some dismay your story last week concerning the recent visit to our area of Senator Nancy Greene Raine. The item was titled Senator meets with local Tories. This brings to the fore another reason why we Canadians must continue to fix the senate. Mr. Trudeau made a brave move last year when he released all the “Liberal” senators from the Liberal caucus. Unfortunately, Mr. Trudeau failed to read all of the memo I sent him in 2014. In that message I had outlined a set of changes to the senate that, I believe, would work to serve the country much better. According to our current senate makeup, each province gets a specific number of senate members. Of course these numbers are way out of touch with the current populations across the country, but I digress. B.C. has been allotted six senators. These six senators represent all the citizens
of our province. I take umbrage with a situation where a senate member travels, I assume on senate funding, to speak with “… some of the people in the Conservative group here”. The senator then goes on to say “I called them up and said, ‘Lets (sic) have a coffee’.” Many East Kootenay residents who are not members of the local Conservatives enjoy coffee as well. And many of us are interested in the workings of our government in Ottawa, and have concerns they would like to be brought forward. Mayor Pratt represents all the citizens of Cranbrook; not just those who voted for him. Bill Bennett represents all the citizens of Kootenay East; not just those who voted for him. Wayne Stetski represents all the citizens of Kootenay Columbia; not just those who voted for him. tor Greene Raine. I have always admired her since she came to the fore in the 1968 Olympics in Grenoble, and her many victories in World Cup races. I believe that she is a fine example of a working senator who takes her role seriously. I am pleased to be represented by her. But it is time to fix the senate. How can we achieve ‘sober second thought’ when the senators are in the same caucus as the MP’s? Mr. Trudeau was headed in the right direction when he released the senators from the Liberal caucus. Let the MP’s debate legislation on a party basis. Then, have the senators caucus by regions. Let them debate the legislation from the perspective of their regional constituents. There is a lot more needed to fix the senate. But it could start with us all knowing more about it. One way we could do that is if we could meet with our senators. Kevin Higgins Cranbrook

he biggest risk of building and promoting a nanny state is that you get one, and then you have to feed it. B.C. politicians are facing this situation in housing, after an entire generation has been taught by school and media that the government is supposed to control the global housing market. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hasn’t promised yet to house everyone in their location of choice, which overwhelmingly seems to be the most desired and expensive urban real estate in the country. But he sent his Families, Children and Social Development Minister, Jean-Yves Duclos, to B.C. to meet with provincial ministers to create a “National Housing Strategy.” We haven’t had one for 40 years, Duclos declared. Oh dear, what a scandal. Actually the reason is that housing is a provincial and local jurisdiction. As with health care, federal meddling via funding strings had largely been eliminated. This is why Ottawa didn’t have a Families, Children and Social Development Minister until a few months ago. If you include housing, B.C. has three ministers doing those jobs, which is as it should be. Duclos’ job is to show that Trudeau really cares, in the style of Liberal Ottawa. As for a national strategy, local and provincial poverty and homelessness elimination schemes have shown that governments might as well an-

The choice of Victoria for the federal-provincial strategy meeting was less than ideal. The theatre over Victoria’s ever-growing “tent city” squat was continuing in and out of the courthouse next door, bolstered by professional protesters from Vancouver. They took a break from ordering the media around at the tent camp, hauled their public address system over to the hotel where Duclos was meeting with B.C. housing czar Rich Coleman and other provincial ministers, and chanted their demands. They even have a number, delivered via bullhorn by a large, loud fellow named Ivan Drury of something called the “Alliance Against Displacement,” an upstart outfit formerly known as “Social Housing
Coalition.” Drury led a chant of “77,000 homes! Build them now!” before his massed supporters made a show for TV of trying to force their way into the hotel where the ministers met. Inside the hotel, Coleman indicated what B.C. intends to do with the $150 million share of federal money that Ottawa offered in its first budget. It’s going into programs that Coleman is rapidly expanding, whether it’s fixing up more run-down hotels or building new subsidized housing. Coleman has been buying up buildings hand over fist in Victoria. He’s brought in the infamous Portland Hotel Society to show the capital how the poverty industry runs in the big city. One of Victoria’s existing converted motels was recently partly gutted by fire, and this will continue to be a risk as
“low barrier” housing becomes the main focus. People with a track record of wrecking social housing and camping in dangerous and unsanitary conditions are the political priority. Their priority is to get high and do as little as possible, and they’re coming from across Canada to good old B.C. Meanwhile, the B.C. government is grappling with the higher end of the housing problem. Vancouver claims it will lead the way and impose a tax on vacant properties to discourage international speculation. That may even work. At least it is being undertaken at the correct level of government, as part of the property tax system. But of course the city wants the provincial government to take over the job. Summer camps are now being offered at Blue Lake north of Cranbrook in the Columbia Valley, for youth and families. The centre provides educational programming on recreation outdoor skill development, sustainability, environment, and leadership. The Centre provides overnight camping experiences and experiential programming to youth. Youth attending the centre gain confidence, independence, critical thinking skills and opportunities to explore the natural environment. In addition, Blue Lake provides rental opportunities to families, small and large groups, and organizations. Rental revenues help offset the cost of our educational programming for youth. Under the City of Cranbrook Parking Meter Bylaw, vehicles that display a Senior Citizen Permit are not required to pay for metered parking through the downtown area. Permits are available during regular business hours at City Hall. Those applying for a Senior Citizen Permit are required to provide government issued identification showing your date of birth and a copy of the vehicle registration proving ownership. The top 16 U16 teams from around the province descended on Cranbrook this weekend
for the 2016 U16C Softball BC Provincial Championships, hosted by the Cranbrook Heat. In terms of a provin-
cial championship, the event was practically a last minute deal. Softball B.C. was left without a host site as late as March.
But the Cranbrook Heat stepped up and offered their services and their town in April, and were quickly approved.

line to get the event organized. “Everybody stepped up and took on some jobs.” And the stellar job Cranbrook did, from the opening ceremonies Friday to the final gold medal match Sunday, was noticed by all who attended. “The Softball B.C. rep and the Umpire in Chief both commented on how well organized our volunteers were, especially the scorekeepers and ground crew,” McCormack said. Even several of the teams commented on how well the grounds crew prepped for every game — they were just on top of everything. “I’m so proud of this group of parents.” Throughout the tournament, the vibe was positive, and having fun was certainly a part of the competition. And the competition was intense. The host Cranbrook Heat found themselves
in a tough round robin draw — playing the Enderby Storm (the eventual gold medal winners), the North Surrey Nitro, the Fleetwood Jr. Bandits (the eventual gold medal winners) and the Chilliwack Crushers. After two days of round robin action, the Heat were left out of playoff round. “They were a little bit frustrated, because they did get a really tough draw,” McCormack said of the Heat. “But they played their best game on Saturday afternoon, the best they’d ever played together. They didn’t win, but they were really proud of the way they played. And so were their coaches.” The top finishers were Enderby Storm (Gold), the Summerland Scorch (Silver), the Fleetwood Jr. Bandits (Bronze) and the Kamloops Diggers (fourth). ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I have raised four sons, mostly by myself. My youngest son ran away from college to pursue his dreams, fell in love with a girl, and married her a year ago. I always have welcomed my sons’ significant others, but this one has me perplexed. When they first began dating, I flew out to meet her and told her how much I approved of her, which I do. I send cards and flowers on her birthday and ask to speak to her when I call, but she rejects me to the point where I am brokenhearted. My son married in a civil ceremony, to which I was not invited, and it just about killed me inside. But this silent treatment has me depressed. I bought them a nice wedding gift, but my son is the only one who responds. How can I get through to my newest daughter-in-law? -- Can’t Understand It in Wheaton, Ill. Dear Wheaton: It’s possible your new daughter-in-law is terribly shy. Shy people can come across as snooty or rude, but she may be so intimidated by you that it is easier for her to avoid all forms of communication. You need to discuss this with your son. Ask him what you can do to warm things up between you. Whatever happens, keep trying, Mom. Dear Annie: I’d like to respond to the letter from “Airhead’s Dad,” whose pre-teen daughter, “Angel,” is forgetful. I am the husband of a 68-year-old “pre-senior” who is constantly losing her glasses because she wears them only to read, forgets where she puts them down, and refuses to develop any system for keeping track of them except ask me to help her search. She has umpteen other similar foibles that drive me up the wall, but you know what? I love her because she is sweet and kind. I think “Airhead’s Dad” might be part of the problem. His daughter doesn’t sound so bad to me, and maybe she needs a bit more love and understanding and less “guidance.” All kids rebel in one way or another, and maybe she is rebelling against a father who is, perhaps, a bit too organized. It explains why girls who were absolute slobs when they lived at home become compulsive housekeepers when they marry. Go figure. -- F.L. Dear F.L.: While it is possible Angel is rebelling against a father who expects too much organization, it didn’t sound like that to us. Here’s more: Dear Annie: The letter from “Airhead’s Dad” sent me off the edge. I’m 13 and often forget things. Being scatterbrained is not a physiological problem, it’s simply being human. It is condescending to make a problem out of something normal. As he said, Angel is “smart, caring, friendly and witty.” Should we not focus on those things rather than this diminutive quirk? She doesn’t need medical treatment. Nor does she need to be constantly reminded that there’s something wrong with her when there isn’t. -- Madison, Wis. Dear Annie: You were right to suggest that Angel be checked by a pediatrician, but I think you were too subtle. Angel’s behavior is typical of Attention Deficit in females. For kids with other skills and strengths, it’s hard to notice ADD until organizational demands get more complex -- right around the preteen years. Most girls are undiagnosed. If folks label her an “airhead” or she begins to think she is stupid, permanent damage will be done. And it will get worse as school gets more organizationally and academically demanding. Please advise Dad to do some reading on ADD, and check with a knowledgeable pediatrician or specialist. We were told our daughter was irresponsible, lazy and “deliberately oppositional.” She is now on the dean’s list at a top liberal arts college. Concern growing for lack of seasonal worker housing in Creston area LORNE ECKERSLEY Creston Valley Advance
An effort is underway to address the increasing dependence on seasonal workers in the Creston Valley’s agriculture sector. “About 500 workers come through the valley each season,” said Paris Marshall Smith. “We now have about 400 acres of orchards and, with an additional 300 more acres anticipated soon, the demand for experienced, motivated workers will only grow.” “One of the growing challenges for the Creston Valley is to find a solution for orchard workers who are not adequately housed,” said Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B director Tanya Wall. Smith and Wall are part of the Fields Forward labour working group, made up of volunteers including producers and orchardists, which is working together as a region with a goal to “attract the most highly skilled motivated workers possible, and to be known for being a great place to work, and shop and so on,” Smith said. Seasonal workers supplement the local labour supply, which also provides hundreds of workers to harvest fruit and get it ready for the market place. “The Creston Valley simply cannot supply all the labour — few agriculture areas can,” Wall said. “Our working group is concerned that more needs to be done in terms of living accommodations and relieving pressure on our
community.” There are no requirements for orchardists to provide any accommodations, but many do, in the belief that it helps attract the best workers available. Orchardists certified through Global GAP (Good Agricultural Practices), an international organization that has strict requirements for the export market, outlines standards for accommodation, but does not require that any be provided. And there are no provincial or regional requirements to provide accommodations for workers. “Many orchardists have found that good workers who are treated well feel welcomed and included,” Smith said. “They behave well and are a great benefit to not only their orchard but also the community at large. As a result, most orchards seek to create hospitable welcoming conditions. “Within the group we have looked at the question of, how do we as a community establish a standard of practice that sees the orchards taking responsibility and community offering support but not bearing the burden?” Among other concerns, that burden including cleaning up, conflict management (between property owners and workers, and between public and workers), safety patrolling, watching for fires, the threat of losing water access and general oversight. This spring, the working group began
looking for space to accommodate workers, primarily to buck a trend that has seen increasing numbers set up camp along Goat River near Canyon Bridge. “In the last years, the number of unhoused workers staying under the bridge has risen from 7 in 2010 to 150 last summer,” Smith said. “More are expected this year. In addition to health, safety and access concerns, there is a growing number of non-workers who are living under the bridge.” With no access that doesn’t impact private landowners, and a previous legal case that saw road access to the area from the north side of the river blocked by selling it to a private landowner, the camping issue is a growing concern. It puts added pressure on police resources, neighbouring residents and the industry as a whole, Wall said. Earlier this month, a potential site to provide camping space for some workers was abandoned when neighboring property owners objected. “We have no interest in working against the community,” Smith said. “Our challenge is to find the right fit so that positive interactions between local residents and seasonal workers are encouraged.” Most of the seasonal workers who arrive for the cherry harvest are only in the area for about six weeks before the work ends.

The B.C. Rural Dividend program has already proved popular. The new program, which was launched earlier this year and seeks to support economic development projects in rural partsof the province, has attracted 180 applicants in its first intake, including some from the Upper Columbia Valley, althoughthe local applicants can’t yet be named. “We ran a workshop prior to the closing date for applications, so I know that at least two projects from this area haveapplied, but I can’t say what they are,” said Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce executive di-
rector and provincial RuralAdvisory Council member Susan Clovechok, adding that she’s pleased with the strong response to the program. “I think it demonstrates that communities are grateful and ready for opportunities for funding that will increase theircapacity for economic development. I think it’s positive that there are so many people wanting to take advantage of this.Even if applicants are unsuccessful, it’s great that individuals and organizations across rural B.C., including here in theUpper Columbia Valley, are planning, thinking and talking about economic development initiatives,” said Clovechok.

In fact the people of that town always make a success of a celebration. They work together, they prepare good programs, and they carry them out with enthusiasm and fairness. These are the characteristics that have made celebrations at Moyie attractive and have been the inducement for people to accept any invitation extended by that town regardless of the weather, and no one who has gone to Moyie on occasions of that kind has ever had reason to regret it. It is a beautiful place for the cynic to visit, for the Lord has been kind in giving to that town a lavish display of wonderful scenery with one of the prettiest bodies of water to be found in all of British Columbia, and no man, woman or child can see Moyie at sunrise or sunset and not feel that it was good to be alive. It is a good place for the lover of humanity to visit, for there he will find the glad hand, the happy smile and the cordial welcome that warms the cockles
around the heart of humans. It is an interesting place for those interested in the mineral wealth of the country for on one side of the lake are the great St. Eugene properties that are netting a fortune each month for the lucky owners, with other properties near at hand that give great promise for the future, while on the other side of the lake are properties the full value of which can only be estimated at this time. And at the St. Eugene there is one of the best concentrators in the mining west, where all who desire can see for themselves how lead ore of that kind is prepared for shipment to the smelters. Is it any wonder that the people generally love to visit that ideal spot, where beauty and wealth combine to make it one of the most attractive places in all of this wonderful province of British Columbia? The Shoot ... In the shooting contest the Moyie team carried off the cup. The teams were as follows: Moyie—Armstrong, Campbell, Cameron and Casey; Cranbrook— Moffatt, Grace, Atchison and Pinkham. The score stood 66 to 58 in favor of Moyie. Top Notch Entertainment … Morrell’s vaudeville and moving picture combination will give an entertainment at the Opera house

L. T. Galbraith, of Fort Steele, was in town Tuesday. Mr. Galbraith has been over East and West Kootenay considerable the past few weeks and he says that never since he has lived in the country, and that has been a great many years, has there been such prospects for a big crop of everything that grows. Vacation Time … Ed. Little left this week for a trip to Michigan, Ontario and the eastern states. It is the first time Mr. Little has gone out for an extended trip since he packed his blankets into the Cranbrook district from Golden about eight years ago. The annual Fairmont Lions Coy’s Golf Fun Day is in its 27th year and one of the more popular golf events in the Fairmont area. evening to hold a session of county court in Cranbrook. The first case taken up last evening was the complicated one of priority of rights in the Flat Head district between A. W. McVittie and associates, Mr. Watts, of Spokane, William Forrest and his associates, Sir Charles Tupper and his associates. There exists the question as to who staked the claims first, Mr. McVittie or Mr. Watts, both having staked ten or twelve years ago, and Mr. McVittie did all that the law allowed to make his standing valid. The other interests are based on staking about two years ago and applications duly made. There is no conflict with any of the interests except with those of Watts, in fact it seems as if it was Watts against the field. No evidence was taken last night, as the question of jurisdiction was first introduced and had to be decided. H. T. Elliott, of Victoria, represented the Watts interests, while S. S. Taylor, of Nelson, Mr. Brown, of Greenwood, and J. A. Harvey, of Cranbrook, were combined in the opposition. This morning the court held that he had no jurisdiction and recommended that a sitting of the supreme court be held in Cranbrook for the purpose of hearing the case on its merits. That ended the case so far as the county court was concerned. Marysville Properties on the Market ... Owing to some changes in the surveyed plan of the town and the necessity of bringing about certain legal formalities it has been impossible for the owners of the Marysville townsite to give deeds for property. This has all been arranged and now deeds can be secured without delay. This will prove good news to many who have been anxious to purchase Marysville property, as there is no doubt now as to the permanency of the town. Mr. E. J. Clayton, of that town has been appointed townsite agent and will have full charge in the future, so that it will be convenient for people to transact townsite business hereafter. With the building of the smelter and the revival of the mining and agricultural interests in the territory tributary to Marysville the town promises to be one of the best in the Kootenays. Not for Cranbrook … Lord Gray has announced that he will give medals to various schools in the province and the list includes Nelson, Revelstoke, Trail, Phoenix, Kamloops, all the coast towns but not Cranbrook. The Herald made inquiry as to the cause and was told that no unincorporated town was considered of sufficient importance to be included in the list of those who were to receive the distinction of the Lord Gray’s generosity. New Bank Building ... Work was commenced on the new building for the Canadian Bank of Commerce yesterday morning. Perry & Fitzgerald have the contract for the excavation and have a force of men at work. Mr. Brownley, the contractor, was here this week arranging for pushing the work. The building is to be of brick with stone facings, and will be one of the best buildings in the Kootenays and a great credit to the bank. New Presbyterian Church... The contract for the new Presbyterian
Church has been let to George Hunter, and he started at work on the excavation on Monday. The new church will be built on the site of the former church, the old building having been moved to the rear of the lot to be used until the new one is ready. The church will be a handsome edifice and a credit to the town. My Oh My … Mrs. Grace Snell-Coffin-Coffin-Walker-Coffin-Layman of Chicago and Los Angeles, who will soon wed her sixth husband, has been eclipsed in the matrimonial way. Information from Owingsville, Ky., is that down in the hills of Taylor county lives Matilda Jane Ayres, known from one end of the state to the other as a woman who has been married nine times and never yet has she been separated from a husband by the divorce route. She has just been married for the ninth time and is believed to hold the world’s record for a much married woman. She is now only 33 years old and almost as pretty as she was when, at the age of 16 years, she eloped from a little country schoolhouse with Morgan Ellet, a handsome young mountaineer. Eight graves in her own private cemetery, all headed by gravestones exactly alike, mark the resting places of eight husbands who have tasted the joys of being loved by this pretty mountain girl. The gravestones all have inscribed on them “beloved husband of Matilda Jane —“till we meet again.” All that is different from the others is that the name of the latest decedent is inserted in the blank space. Opening of Hanson’s Hotel… N. Hanson’s handsome hotel at Wasa, which was just completed, was formally opened last Saturday with a general gathering of old timers, as well as many of the later arrivals in the district. The hotel is 37 by 100 feet, two storys high, and cost over $20,000. It is furnished in modern style throughout and is one of the best hotels in the interior of British Columbia. There are 24 rooms in all, and there are baths, electric lights, a handsome dining room that will accommodate 50 people, and a bar room that has been fitted up in a most attractive manner. The day of the opening proved a very enjoyable one to all present, and in the evening dancing and cards were the attractions until about 12 o’clock, when the host announced that dinner was ready, and what a feast it was. It seemed as if Mr. Hanson had gathered all the good things of the Kootenays for his guests’ pleasure, and it is needless to say that they did full justice to the load of edibles that made the tables groan. The opening was a happy one in every way and all extended congratulations to Mr. Hanson and wished that he might live as Wasa another 20 years and continue in his prosperity and good health. A Grave Story … There is a story going the rounds that two officials were called out to investigate a mysterious grave in the east end of town, and that when it was dug into it showed up to be an early lettuce bed, and in this way a big sensation was nipped in the bud.

College of the Rockies hosting welding camp FOR THE TOWNSMAN
College of the Rockies, in conjunction with the Canadian Welding Association (CWA) Foundation, will be hosting a free welding summer camp for students aged 12 to 15 years from July 18 to 22. The CWA Foundation hosted its first pilot welding camp in the summer of 2014 in Edmonton, Alberta and is now introducing the camps to all provinces across Canada. This summer the Foundation will be funding over 35 camps in almost every province across Canada. The welding trades has many great career opportunities ranging from welder, welding inspector, welding researcher and even welding engineer. This camp is a chance to share the opportunities available with youth, especially
youth who may be at risk. “These camps are specifically designed to provide at-risk youth with an introduction to the welding profession and the great career options that are available, while being supervised by professionals in a safe environment,” says Deborah Mates, Director of the CWA Foundation. “We will be introducing participants to welding safety, Gas Metal Arc welding, weld symbols and a brief history of the impact welding has on our daily lives,” adds Ken McKay, welding instructor at College of the Rockies. “Then the students will have the opportunity to practice on the welding simulator before moving on to real arcs and sparks – creating their very own projects.”
Thanks to funding from the CWA Foundation, the Minds Over Metal summer camp is available free of charge. It will run from 8:30am to 2:00pm Monday to Friday from July 18 to 22. B.C. men charged in moose riding case BL ACK PRESS
Charges have been laid against two Fort Nelson men who posted a video of themselves pursuing a swimming moose until one of them was able to jump on its back. The men are to make their first appearance in provincial court in Fort Nelson on Aug. 8 to face three charges under the Wildlife Act, said Chris Doyle, deputy chief of the B.C. Conservation Officer Service. Charges are for harassing wildlife with a boat, attempting to capture wildlife and hunt-
ing a big game animal that is swimming. The video was identified as being shot from a boat on the Tochodi Lakes southwest of Fort Nelson in the summer of 2014. It shows the boat chasing a swimming moose until one man in plaid swimming trunks jumps on the moose’s back while his friends laugh. The ride appears to last only a few seconds before the man falls off and the moose is able to wade towards shore.
