Habitat for Humanity gets another build done JOCELYN DOLL

Last week at Habitat for Humanity’s home dedication ceremony, the whole block had no power. Instead of discarding the mobile sound system and relying on theatre voices, Peter Sanderson hooked up the system to the battery in his vehicle. This trick was on theme as Habitat for Humanity seems to have a way of getting things done with what they have. Pat McKenna, the North-Island executive director, first taught the crowd Habitat’s “oiyay” cheer before introducing the project’s key people, recognizing the 6,000 volunteer hours that went towards the project and thanking the many financial as well as inkind sponsors. The police helicopter located the suspect’s vehicle several kilometres from the scene and police vehicles moved in, resulting in an arrest. The victim was taken to hospital where he received extensive medical attention for his numerous injuries. The investigation into the assault led to several search warrants which, combined with the efforts of the forensic unit, uncovered further evidence. Arrested after the incident was Ryan MacMillan and the case is currently before the court. “This was a violent targeted offence and a quick response by the public and police allowed for a quick apprehension of MacMillan. These kinds of serious offences are

dealt with promptly and police do not hesitate in pulling in as many resources as required to complete a full and solid investigation as quickly as possible,” said Const. Clark. In mid-July Benny and Maggie McGrath, and Melissa Hamstra and their children, will move in to their new duplex in Willow Point. Each family was given a loaf of bread as a symbol of stability and in hope that the family would never be hungry, a bag of salt so that life would always be flavourful, a Bible to provide love and guidance and so that their new home would be a place of study, and a toolbox to ensure

that they had all the tools they needed to be a successful homeowner. The final part of the ceremony was the presentation of the keys and symbolic unlocking of the front door. “It’s just been amazing, learning how to build a home, how to take care of it…and the community, it’s just been amazing,” said Hamstra. The Hamstras and the McGraths went through the selection process and were chosen as the family partners last December. Since then they have each put in 500 hours of sweat equity as the down payment on their new home. They pay an interestfree mortgage to Habitat, which is used to build

On Canada Day, RCMP were dispatched in response to a complaint that a man was wandering around Superstore carrying a machete. Police quickly responded to the scene and apprehended him. Once the man was in custody he stated he was carrying the machete for personal protection but he never planned on using it and didn’t intended to scare patrons with it. “He said he was just travelling through the area and living out of his car,” said Const. Addressing minimum wage thing Provincial NDP leader John Horgan came out recently saying that if his party gets to form the next government, they will raise the minimum wage to $15/hour. While this was welcome news to those who have been fighting (and often failing) to keep their heads above water these days and are not earning enough to live comfortably because an income from working at full-time at minimum wage is still below the poverty line, I’m of the opinion that raising the minimum wage so significantly may, in the long run, do more harm than good. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for lifting people out of poverty, and that’s exactly what raising the minimum wage to $15 would do. In a 2015 study produced for the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, entitled, “The Case for Increasing the Minimum Wage,” David Green cites “the significant body of academic research about the economic impacts of minimum wages to assess

As for Canada Post, we’ll find out Monday if similar terms apply. It looks like both sides in this latest conflict involving the corporation, which recorded a $63-million profit last year, have dug deep trenches and terms like “bully bosses” and “unscrupulous” are being lobbed. Pensions and gender pay equity are among the issues. After Canada’s 50,000 postal workers voted 94 per cent to strike, Canada Post issued a 72-hour lockout notice and the lockout is expected to take effect Monday, after extending its lockout notice. But hopeful university applicants sending out transcripts, and small businesses that rely on snail mail, have to be wringing their hands. Because do you really think that employers are going to give their entire staff a 40 per cent raise if minimum wage goes up 40 per cent? Or maybe you naively think that raising the minimum wage won’t cause prices of things to go up. It absolutely will. And that gives everyone currently making $17, $20, even $25 per hour less buying power. The minimum wage going up 40 per cent will only help those making not enough to live comfortably until the economy catches up with that increase, at which point it will hurt all those those making barely enough to live comfortably. What we need to do is turn our attention to figuring out how to make things like housing and food less expensive, not give some people more money to deal with the fact that those things are too expensive.

As of September, new laws surrounding the sale, promotion and use of e-cigarettes will come into effect. While local retailers and producers say the restrictions are needed, they are tired of “vapes” being treated like tobacco. T he gove r n me nt’s announcement says the Tobacco and Vapour Products Control Act, “is designed to protect youth from the unknown effects of e-cigarette vapour and from becoming addicted to nicotine, which is why it will treat e-cigarette use exactly the same as tobacco, with the same bans and restrictions.” Local e-juice producer Ryan Gruszie with Vector Vapor gives the new regulations a C+. “In a way, we dodged a huge bullet from a production point of view,” he says. “There was talk that the regulations would not allow producers to make flavoured juice anymore – that it would be limited to menthols or tobacco flavours – and that would have been terrible not just for us as producers, but for everyone.” The main reason people pick up “vaping,” Gruszie says, is to help them quit smoking. He used the products himself to quit and hasn’t had a cigarette in almost two years after smoking for over half his life. “Why would people want to vape something that tastes like the thing they’re trying to quit because it’s gross?” he asks rhetorically. “If you’re looking for a way to get off cigarettes, you want something that tastes delicious. “There are juices out there that taste like tobacco, and that’s fine for people who actually enjoy the flavour of a cigarette, but, in my experience, that’s definitely the minority of people picking up a vape.” Thankfully, that didn’t end up being part of the legislation, but there are aspects of it that Gruszie is concerned about, like what could be added to the regulations down the road because the products have been “lumped in with tobacco.” Like increased taxation. While some people are quitting smoking and turning to e-cigarettes as a cessation tool for health reasons, Gruszie says, many others are quitting

due to the expense. “Some people quit because they just can’t afford to be paying $11 a day – depending on how much you smoke – for a habit,” he says, so if e-juice becomes significantly more expensive than it currently is due to excessive taxation, that incentive for people to quit smoking using these products goes away. Chris Roffey, owner of North Island Vapours in Campbell River, says that

while he, too, agrees the products need to be regulated so shops who sold to minors can’t anymore – most did not, he says – the products have nothing to do with tobacco, and should never have been labelled as such. “People are saying, ‘hey this isn’t so bad,’ when they see the new rules, but I tell them to remember that it’s now also in the Tobacco Act, so all of those rules come into effect, as well,” Roffey

says. “They’re not looking long-term. I look further down the road and see the potential for them to really go after it now that it falls under tobacco regulations.” It’s also going to complicate things in the short-term, he says. The new rules aren’t anything he can’t – or won’t – work within, but they will add some logistical issues to his day-to-day operations. Use of the products

Employees will also no longer be allowed to operate the equipment. “Technically, if one of my employees is checking out a customer’s broken device, and he presses the button on it to test it, is he technically contravening the regulations? “He’s firing the button, so technically he is, maybe, because he’s operating it. Are we going to have to take customers outside and walk 20 feet out into the parking lot to help them with their gear?” It’s also going to cost Roffey and businesses like his a ton of money to abide by a few of the new regulations, including the purchase and installation of new air filtering sys-

tems so that no vapour escapes the premises. But Roffey, Gruszie and those like them will keep at it, working within whatever regulations the government imposes. What’s important to them is that they’re help-

ing people. “We’re going to keep at it,” Roffey says. “We’re still going to help these people. I love doing this, and we’ll work within any framework that they put in place so we can keep doing it.”

Island Health grants funding to SRD for health risk mitigation programs KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The Strathcona Regional District has accepted funding offered by Island Health for programs aimed at mitigating health risk factors. Under the agreement,

the regional district is expected to receive a $69,066 grant as part of a new Community Wellness Granting Program established by the health authority. Victoria Smith, the regional district’s special projects and sustainability manager, said Island

Health is offering the grants to address the health, well-being and social development of Island communities. Smith said the grant is to be used for “developing population level i nte r ve nt i ons t h at address modifiable risk factors as well as frail

seniors, mental health and substance use.” Toni O’Keeffe, vicepresident of communications for Island Health, wrote in a letter to the regional district that the health authority intends to move forward with the Community Wellness Grant-

ing Program in September or October but in the interim is hoping the grants awarded to regional districts will help address “five modifiable risk factors – unhealthy weight/ obesity; physical inactivity; unhealthy eating; tobacco use; and harm-

ful alcohol use.” The board has chosen to put the money in a reserve account to be used for suitable projects through the Strathcona Community Health Network once a coordinator is in place and the network is off and running.

The health network is a partnership between several stakeholders including the regional district, Island Health, First Nations and the City of Campbell River, working to address the underlying determinants of health in this region.

Drought Levels And Watering Restrictions… What’s The City Story? PROCESS The City of Campbell River is fortunate to have such a clean, resilient and large watershed, with a series of lakes that store water. The Campbell River watershed is more than 1,800 square kilometres in size. This is approximately 3.5 times larger than the Comox Valley watershed – and provides our community with a very generous and reliable source of water throughout the year. As a result, the City of Campbell River does not face the same concerns about running out of water that other communities may face during a drought.

With extremely dry weather conditions, the Province has declared a level 4 drought on parts of Vancouver Island and the south coast of B.C.

Our watershed provides safe drinking water, ﬁsh and wildlife habitat and a beautiful natural area for recreation activities. Plus, it helps reduce the eﬀects of climate change by cooling the air and absorbing greenhouse gas emissions.

The City’s water system (the pipes and pumps that get water to taps in our community) is built to deliver up to 1,065 litres per second of safe drinking water. We allocate 300 litres per second for ﬁreﬁghting, which leaves 765 litres per second for household and business use.

The amount of water used by the community can vary quite a bit throughout the day. Low flows usually occur in the middle of the night, and peak flows typically occur mornings and evenings. Peak flows help determine whether watering restrictions are needed or not. If the community uses water responsibly, the peak demand for water is well below the City’s capacity limit of 765 litres per second. That’s why our community’s voluntary reduction in water use enables the City of Campbell River to remain in stage 1 watering restrictions. Water demand is monitored daily. If we can keep water use at current levels, we should be able to avoid further restrictions.

Eve of Destruction at Saratoga Speedway lived up to expectations on Saturday, leaving the fans fully satisfied after seeing one of the most destructive nights of the 2016 season. Josh Beckel and his team from The Crusher Stunts group, put on one of the best Car jump shows we have ever seen at Saratoga, putting on not only one but two amazing stunts. First, Josh drove his Ford Taurus through a mini van going full speed, landing hard on his roof, but Josh would be just fine as he moved on to his feature jump which would see Josh fly through a stack of four cars going 85 miles per hour. Josh once again would be fine, and will be returning on Sept. 3 to put on an even bigger show. The Galaxy Motors Mad Max Extreme Racers, Hornet cars and Crash to Pass cars were also on the card Saturday, with Courtenay Kia sponsoring the night of carnage. Once again the Galaxy Motors Mad Max Extreme Eacers set a new high for car count, this time bringing out a field of 12 cars to accompany the 43 Hornet cars and six Crash to Pass cars. Heat race action would see wins go to Clancey Beamish, James Laidlaw, Don Clark, Carter Hintz, Ryan Jensen, and Troy Ordano. A very exciting Galaxy Motors Mad Max heat race would see all 12 cars enter into what would turn out to be one of the craziest heat races we have ever seen at

Saratoga. First, Toryn Davies would roll over his Scooby Doo Machine in turn 1, than would grab another car from the pits, just to have it go head on into the wall, ending the night for both cars. # Rowland Westra and Danielle Antonik would find themselves both in a pile of tires in turn 4, ending their heat races as well. After 25 minutes and four laps completed, the win would end up going to Damon Dunn, who somehow managed to get through the carnage to take home the win. Twenty-four Hornet B cars would enter in a 25-lap main event which would see points leader Westra and Michael White jump from the back to the front in less than five laps and they would pull away from the pack, battling bumper to bumper for the remainder of the race, with the advantage once again going to Westra who continues his dominance in the Hornet B division. A record 19 Hornet A cars entered into a very exciting 25-lap main event which saw a very tight pack battle bumper to bumper early, but Jensen, who took home the heat race win earlier in the night, would find the fast line and get himself into the lead on lap 6 and he would pull away from the pack from there. The real battle was for second and third as Kevin Lawrenuk, rian Sallis, and Blair Mangles battled one another, constantly swapping spots back and forth, but it would be Lawrenuk who got the last laugh as he would emerge into second on

lap 22 and would hold the pack off to take home second, with Sallis taking home third. Nine Galaxy Motor Mad Max cars survived to take to their 15-lap main event. Just like their heat race, a ton of hitting would take place throughout the race, knocking out a few cars early, opening the door for Dunn and Craig Gagne to pull away from the pack, but Gagne would manage to pull away from Dunn to take home his first main event win of the year. The final main event of the evening would see even more carnage take place as the Crash to Pass cars put on a show of their own; Jason Beaulieu and Cam Edwards would emerge early as the clear favorites and would battle one another for all 15 laps, with the final blow going to Edwards as he would absolutely rock Beaulieu, taking Beaulieu out of contention and he would pull away from their, taking home his second main event win of the year. E xtr a l aps... Ne x t Weekend Saratoga welcomes all of the open wheel classes on the island back to the Speedway. The Wilroc Lites, who were just here two weeks ago, will be back once again to put on some of the best racing you will see at Saratoga. After being rained out two races in a row, the Dwarf cars will once again try to make their 2016 season debut. The I.M.C.A Modifieds, Bomber cars, and the Roadrunners will round out the night of open wheel action at Saratoga Speedway.

GOLF Weekly Simple but Eff7x14 ective Practice Drills (Part 1) If you are busy like me during the golf season, you only have a limited time to practice your golf game. Instead of mindlessly beating range balls, I have a few simple drills for the maximum output for your practice time. Putting: The Breaks To be a successful putter you have to gain a consistency between line and speed. What you should pick is a putt between 10-20 feet with some break in it, and practice finding the highest and lowest breaking point in the putt to still have the ball go in the hole. This will mean you will have to alter speeds, but in the end you will develop your mind’s eye to better succeed in managing you speed and line on the greens. The Two Line Drill (Green-side Bunker) The biggest issue for most golfer when it comes to playing a bunker shot is their lack of controlling the low-point of the bunker shot. Most golfers can easily hit sand behind the ball, but they either take too much sand or not enough. Anyone that has played golf will have seen someone leave the ball in the bunker or bladed one over the green. To eliminate this problem, try to draw two lines in the sand. Two inches behind the ball and 2 inches in front of the ball. Practice impact the sand on the line behind the ball and also exiting sand on the line in front of the ball for a perfectly executed bunker shot. If the divot doesn’t fit nicely between the two lines, then you’ll know where everything went wrong.

Getting the Short Game Feel Back One of the biggest problems for golfer is maintaining acceleration through the ball when chipping around the greens to preform good chips for up and downs. Next time you’re struggling with acceleration, try to hit shot that will require you to put more acceleration into the shot. Find some higher thicker grass or even hit a bunch of sand shot that are buried a bit, and make sure you get that club head to a follow through. Do not get jammed at impact.

A special diamond anniversary garden tour will showcase 10 Campbell River Garden Club members’ gardens July 16 and 17. To celebrate their 60th anniversary, the Campbell River Garden Club, the first recorded garden club in the city, is hosting a garden tour in partnership with the city’s recreation and culture department.

“A wide variety of gardens await your discovery, from a riverside paradise and countryside treasure, to a cornerlot oasis in the city and a tiny pie-shaped urban garden,” Ridgway adds. “Many of these gardens are by accomplished, lifelong gardeners who express their own personalities through their creative use of garden spaces.”

The Compost Education Centre will host a recycled garden art show, and a plant and garden book sale will be offered at one of the gardens. Purchase $15 tickets for the two-day event that runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Campbell River Community Centre or the Sportsplex. “Everyone is welcome, and a bus will be available for an extra charge,

I was a lucky kid! From the time I was 11 until I was 14 my Dad would show up at school every Thursday at noon with the van, my YZ 80 and all my gear so we could skip the afternoon and head south to race motocross. I loved racing then and still do today. Now I’m spinning the pedals instead of twisting a throttle, but the racing atmosphere is the same; good people, tons of fun and the amazing feel of competition. Some people handle the competition with ease, others focus so hard on the goal they don’t have time to be nervous and still others, like me, have such huge nerves that we are only one wrong move away from vomiting as we approach the start line. I remember those days as a kid racing motocross. I’d wake up on Thursday morning and could barely hold breakfast down. I often wondered why I bothered going to school in

Lacrosse was the same thing, tons of nerves until the opening face off and all was good from that point forward. In DH racing I could barely function until the five beeps started my race run, then it was easy, just riding and relying on instinct. I can’t say I ever enjoyed the few hours before a competition, but while actually competing I was euphoric. Thirty years later, I haven’t changed a bit, but now it’s not a weekly race or game where I’m nervous for a few hours, this is a seven day race that has had the butterflies fluttering for a couple of weeks. I’m writing this two days before the race starts and as much as I have to eat and drink lots right now, I’m having trouble getting food

The saltwater fishing action from Campbell River north to Sayward and Port Hardy has picked up over the past week and some big fish are coming in.

Painters Lodge guides have had a good start in the month of July and they are getting fish to the boat for customers who come from all walks of life to experience salmon fishing in Campbell River. Wendy Sheppard got a 36.5 pound Tyee and many other anglers are getting fish from 16 to 20 pounds. Jeff Thornhill got a 25 and Joseph Guzek a 20. There is a fishing culture that exists on Discovery Pier that includes the locals who put in time fishing and the number of anglers that are regular visitors cast out lures and come away with a salmon. Each year tourists come from all over

Since July 1, five salmon have been caught and the catch numbers have picked up considerably. The weeks to come could see some surprises as more bait is in the inside and those fishing in the early morning hours and catching the right tides might be in for a nice salmon.
