The weather cooperated for the most part, although it was cooler than many JulyFests in the past. But people smiled through the odd rain shower and kept on festing. There was a palpable energy in town that only

Last week at City Council, the development took a step on the road to reality with the first reading of a zoning amendment bylaw to clear the way for construction. The next step is a public hearing. “We want public input on the concept,” said Mayor Don McCormick. “It’s going to be huge, from an overall construction point of view, from an employment point of view, and for meeting a real need.” McCormick is pleased to see things moving forward. “This is more than just testing the waters,” he said. “It’s not the first facility of this type they’ve put up. They’ve done it before. It’s an excellent plan.

Thefts from construction sites FOR THE BULLETIN
Cranbrook and Kimberley RCMP have noticed an increase in construction site thefts over the past couple of weeks. These thefts appear to include building materials and supplies, equipment and high end tools. RCMP is strongly encouraging builders and businesses with active construction projects and sites to take every effort possible to ensure the security of their supplies and equipment. Residents nearby construction sites are also encouraged to call if suspicious activity is observed.

ARTS Local author Shelby Cain debuts ‘Mountain Girl’

Book lovers from in and around Cranbrook gathered on Friday, July 8, to take in a reading by local author Shelby Cain. Mountain Girl, Cain’s debut novel, was
launched earlier this month in Fernie by Oolichan Books, a publishing house based in Fernie. The reading took place at Lotus Books downtown and was an intimate gathering of Cain’s friends, family,

and fans. Cain read the first chapter of the novel and a few short excerpts that epitomized the novel’s themes of empathy, love, forgiveness, and the recognition of oneself. As Cain spoke of her novel, it was obvious that she was buzzing with excitement and gratitude. She welcomed each guest and wore an ever-growing and infectious smile throughout the evening. Attendees engaged with Cain and asked questions that explored her creative journey and what is still yet to come for this first-time novelist. Even though she just released a novel, Cain says that she already has some ideas brewing for a second. The book tells the story of Kris who has been missing for four years. She returns to town with a child and a man whom she calls her husband. From there, Mountain Girl delves into issues of empathy

Shortly after moving to Fernie, Cain became inspired by and received undying support from Fernie author Angie Abdou. “Mountain Girl would not have been the book it is today without [Angie’s] influence. She is an amazing advocate for writers and writing in Canada,” said Cain, in an interview prior to the reading. In the fall, Cain is planning a book tour around British Columbia to promote Mountain Girl. Kimberley Gymnastics Club looks for new facility C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
The Kimberley Gymnastics Club has been operating in their building on Crerar Street for many years, but are facing a few problems with the current location. It is small, meaning many programs the club would like to offer have to be postponed, and the building itself is old, likely reaching the end of its useful life. The bottom line is, the club would like to replace the facility. They presented a business plan to Council last week. The business plan says that costs of bringing the current building up to code are likely to exceed the cost of a new building. The business plan included some estimates for constructing a new building, with the lowest being $650,000. “They really did an amazing job on the business plan,” said Mayor Don McCormick. “It clearly defines the hill in front of them. An outstanding job.” McCormick says there is no decision on where the new building

Kimberley’s $200 share of the prize money was earned by way of a 7 – 1 win over Edmonton Outlaws. In their second match against the strong Calgary club, they went to the sidelines with an 8 – 1 loss. Kimberley 7, Edmonton 1 – The seven inning tilt saw Jack Hollaston pitch the distance for Kimberley, registering 8 strikeouts and giving up but 5 hits against the highly touted Edmonton club. Conference Centre accounts for $700,000 boost for local economy FOR THE BULLETIN
It’s been a busy 2016 at the Kimberley Conference Centre. Spring saw 50 conferences, expos and receptions flock to the East Kootenay’s largest meeting facility. Thousands of delegates have travelled to Kimberley since January and represent a significant economic injection into the community. The 4,700 overnight stays attributable to the Conference Centre thus far in 2016 account for a $700,000 boost to the local economy. Annually the economic impact is a 10 times multiplier of the City’s operating subsidy. In March Kimberley hosted the Association of BC Land Surveyors. This group totalled 200 delegates for a five day conference. While this annual event is usually held in the Lower Mainland attendance actually outstripped previous years’ conferences as more delegates brought
tour operators from throughout the area to offer a unique summer camp experience. If you or someone you know is part of a

This famous ride connects Mexico, the US and Canada and
the Conference Centre will host over 300 riders for their awards banquet. In anticipation of securing new business for 2017/18/19 other revenue initiatives are being planned for the Slower Summer months. A business plan for Kimberley Alpine Adventure Camps is being developed to attract kids aged 8 – 15 from across Western Canada. These Camps would be based in the Conference Centre and would engage

Fun-filled JulyFest weekend From Page 1 With a large influx of people, many consuming alcohol, police take extra precautions to ensure everybody has a safe enjoyable weekend, Newel says. “Police did face a number of people consuming alcohol in public and some noise complaints, but there were no assaults or other crimes reported,” he said. “There was one 90-Immediate Roadside Prohi-

The other more independent living facility, which will be the last to be built is planned to be a four storey building with 45 units of studio, one and two-bedroom apartments. Meal services will be offered as well as
many other amenities. In and around these two facilities will be nine duplexes of patio style units with two-bedrooms averaging 1000 sq. ft. each. These duplexes may be available for strata-type ownership. People living in the duplexes would have access to the amenities offered by the other facilities. The whole age in place concept is that people move to higher levels of care as needed but stay in the same community.

On the failure of Turkey’s attempted coup
T
urkey’s democracy is dead. It was dying anyway, as President Recep Tayyib Erdogan took over media outlets, arrested political opponents and journalists, and even re-started a war with the Kurds last autumn in order to win an election. But once part of the army launched a coup attempt on Friday night, it was dead no matter which way the crisis ended. It wasn’t a very competent coup atttempt. The first rule of coup-making is: arrest or kill the person you are trying to overthrow. The coup leaders should have been able to grab Erdogan, who was on holiday at the seaside resort of Marmaris, but they didn’t. They didn’t shut down the internet and social media either, so Erdogan was able to use his cellphone to get a message out on FaceTime, calling on his supporters to defy the soldiers on the streets of Istanbul and Ankara. They didn’t even shut down the broadcast media that sent Erdogan’s call out to the public. It was three hours before they occupied the offices of TRT, the state broadcaster, and they were chased out again by Erdogan less than an hour later. They didn’t ever try to shut down the private television networks, which have a much bigger audience. The second rule of coup-making is: act as if you mean it. This usually means that you have to be willing to kill people – but the colonels behind the coup (the generals were all vetted by Erdogan’s people) were largely reluctant to use lethal force. This is laudable, in human terms, but if you are trying to overthrow the rule of a ruthless man who aspires to absolute control, it is a very bad mistake. They took control of Istanbul airport, but they were chased out again by Erdogan’s supporters
because they were not willing to shoot them – and Erdogan flew back into the city. Maybe the coup-makers were just too short of troops to grab control of everything they needed to make the coup work. Maybe, also, they were afraid to order their troops to carry out a massacre because Turkey’s is a conscript army, and many of its young soldiers – basically civilians in uniform for one year – might simply refuse to kill their fellow citizens. At any rate, they didn’t use massive violence in Istanbul (42 people were reportedly killed in Ankara), and so they were soon in retreat. But there can be no happy ending to this episode. Democracy would obviously have been dead if the Gwynne rebels won. Almost exactly half of Dyer Turkey’s voters backed Erdogan in the last election, so a military regime would have had to stay in power for a long time. It would not have dared to hold a free election and risk Erdogan returning to power. It would have been equally dead if the coup had partially succeeded and the army had really split, for that would have meant civil war. Mercifully that possibility has now disappeared, but democracy will be dead in Turkey even if the coup is utterly defeated. A triumphant Erdogan will seize this opportunity to complete his take-over of all the major state organisations and the media, and become (as his followers often call him) the “Sultan” of Turkey. That is a tragedy, because five or ten years ago Turkey seemed well on the way to being the sort of democracy, with free media and the rule of law, where a coup like this was simply inconceivable. When Erdogan won his first election in 2002, promising to remove all the restri-
cions that pious Muslims suffered under the rigidly secular constitution, it seemed a reasonable step foward in the democratisation process. He kept his promises about that, but gradually he went further, trying to Islamise the country against the strong opposition of the half of the population that favours a secular state. Luckily for Erdogan the Turkish economy was booming, so he went on winning elections – and he worked steadily to concentrate all power in his own office. He removed any officials who were not his avid supporters, attacked the freedom of the media, and committed Turkey to unconditional support for the Islamist rebels in neighbouring Syria. The rebel army officers may have been trying to stop all that, but it was a terrible mistake for which they will suffer severe punishment. So will anybody who is even suspected of having sypathised with them, and Erdogan will emerge as the all-powerful “Sultan” of a post-democratic Turkey. The coup leaders made the same mistake as the Egyptian liberals made when they asked the army to overthrow the elected president there in 2013. Egypt had a president whom they feared and hated, but they also had a democracy which provided a peaceful means of ousting him. Erdogan’s popularity would have dwindled with time. The Turkish economy is stagnant, his Syrian policy is a disaster, and the flagrant corruption of the people around him is getting hard to ignore. Sooner or later he would have lost an election. But like the Egyptian liberals, the officers who led the Turkish coup didn’t trust democracy enough to wait. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose articles are published in 45 countries.

Condo dispute tribunal begins work TOM FLETCHER Black Press
B.C.’s Civil Resolution Tribunal has begun taking “early intake” applications for strata property disputes. Canada’s first online tribunal is not yet fully operational, and is testing its application process. The tribunal has 18 lawyers and mediation experts who will adjudicate strata property and small claims disputes without going to court. Legislation to create the tri-
bunal was passed in the spring of 2015. Justice Minister Suzanne Anton said at the time that the tribunal and its early resolution process “will help to resolve disputes faster and with more lasting outcomes, while saving people time and money.” The tribunal is expecting a large spike of strata-related claims as it starts up, and warns that it could take several months to resolve claims as it continues to add staff and de-
velop its technology. The tribunal has a guide to its service on its website, www. civilresolutionbc.ca. The application begins with a “solutions explorer” where people describe the nature of their dispute and then receive detailed information about their options under B.C. law. The first suggestion is to use form letters to contact the other party in the dispute directly, to see if it can be settled without a formal application to the tribu-
nal. Most strata claims have a two-year limitation period, after which they can’t be taken to the tribunal or to court. If an early intake application is accepted, it may stop the countdown and allow the case to be prepared for when tribunal members begin hearing cases. If applicants are accepted and then change their minds and want to go to court instead, approval of the tribunal is required.
Court upholds ban on B.C. pharmacy reward points JEFF NAGEL Black Press
Shoppers in B.C. who love to collect Air Miles or other loyalty reward points when they fill prescriptions are out of luck. A ban on pharmacies offering loyalty rewards or other incentives on prescription drugs will remain in force after the Supreme Court of Canada refused to hear an appeal filed by major retailers. The College of Pharmacists
of British Columbia passed a bylaw banning incentives such as redeemable points on the grounds that the practice is unethical, unsafe and unprofessional because patients can be tempted to buy drugs they don’t need. “Pharmacists are medication experts, and sometimes the right thing for them to do is not dispense a drug,” said college registrar Bob Nakagawa. “A patient’s motivation to collect redeemable points may in-
appropriately encourage drug use and can put their health at risk.” One of the objections raised by the college was that insured patients who don’t pay out of pocket might continue to refill a prescription after they no longer need it just to collect more points and the unneeded drugs may be abused or diverted to the illegal drug trade. Incentives have long been forbidden on methadone prescriptions as well as any Phar-
macare-covered prescriptions. The ban was challenged by Sobeys, which owns Safeway and Thrifty Foods stores, on the basis it was an unreasonable restraint, with no evidence of any harm to consumers. A B.C. Supreme Court judge originally overturned the ban as having been too broad, but the B.C. Court of Appeal sided with the college in January. The ban has been in force since then.

Baseball continues to grow in the East Kootenay and the Cranbrook Bandits ever increasing success is simply one measuring stick for that. The local American Legion Baseball crew provided yet another marker in that regard this past weekend, by setting a new franchise win record. Playing five games south of the border in Lewistown, Mont., the Bandits earned four victories to improve to 2119-1 this season, surpassing the club win record initially set in 2014 and matched in 2015. “We’re definitely playing much better baseball,” said Paul Mrazek, head coach of the Bandits baseball program, Monday afternoon. “We’re playing better defense than we have. We’re hitting the ball better as a team, getting the job done cashing people in. There’s still lots of little stuff I still expect more of, but I think it says the program has definitely come along. Different coaches [around the league] over the last three years have seen what we’re doing, they’re seeing us get
better and they’ve commented that. It’s nice. “This year is where we’re seeing it and it’s pretty exciting — baseball is growing in Cranbrook right now. I’m excited and I think there’s more that we can do.” Opening the weekend with a 8-4 defeat of the Medicine Hat Majestics, the Bandits snapped a three-game losing streak. After a 13-7 loss to Billings Post, the Bandits rounded out the weekend with a 12-3 win over Great Falls and a 5-3 victory over Gallatin. Sunday afternoon, wild weather brought about an early end to the final game of the weekend. After a length delay, the game was called and the Bandits walked away with a 6-5 triumph over the Scobey Blues. Bandits rookie Greg Rebagliati got the start in Thursday’s 8-4 win over the Majestics, going three innings, striking out four while only allowing one earned run. From there, Dan Mercandelli, Brandon Thorn and Caden McCormack provided relief work, while McCormack earning the save. The Bandits’ offense provided the necessary run support, building a
around him. By the end of the second inning, the Bandits were in a hole too deep to recover, having fallen behind 9-2. After Billings Post tacked up two more runs in the top of the fourth inning, a spirited four-run effort clawed the visitors to within striking distance, trailing 11-6. But Billings Post put it away with a two-run effort in the top of the sixth. A total of 10 errors in the outing ultimately cost the Bandits. Kei Chlopan went 3-for-5, including two RBI for the Bandits to help lead the offense, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the costly mistakes on defense. “We never recovered,” Mrazek said of the early errors in Friday’s loss to Billings Post. “I wasn’t too happy about how we played against Medicine Hat, even though we won. So after that, we had a little talk. I wasn’t going to talk at all but then I had to wait for the bus, so I started talking and it got ugly.” Saturday morning, the Bandits responded in resounding fashion, shaving the error count to four en route to a decisive 12-3 win over Great Falls.

A lastgasp comeback attempt from the Majestics was doused in the top of the seventh inning. Friday afternoon, Billings Post got the best of Hayden Mastel and the Bandits en route to a 13-7 win. Mastel lasted only one inning on the bump despite doing his best to work the opposition into hitting routine ground balls and pop ups. The rookie allowed seven runs (three earned), before giving way to Mercandelli, as the defense crumbled
Paul Mrazek Bandits Head Coach A six-run effort in the bottom of the first inning gave the Bandits more offense than was required, with Rebagliati going the distance by throwing five strong innings with three strikeouts and three runs allowed (zero earned). Saturday, the Bandits won a 5-3 nail-biter against Gallatin. The bats spotted a 4-0 lead through the top of the second before Gallatin came to life, victimizing Mercandelli — who got the start on the mound — for three runs in th bottom of the
second inning to roar back into the contest. Tyler Thorn came on in relief and went the rest of the way, firing 3.2 innings of one-hit baseball, striking out eight to claim the save, while Mercandelli collected the victory. Sunday’s final outing saw the Bandits fall behind 5-1 before a fiverun explosion in the top of the fifth inning launched the visitors to a 6-5 lead with no runs on the board. Then the lightning rolled in to put the game on delay. Then the skies opened and pingpongball-sized hail pelted the field. Before mother nature had finished, rain poured down leaving standing water on the diamond and multiple hours of cleanup required to build the field back up. The game was called, giving the Bandits a third-place finish at the tournament and a new franchise mark for victories in a season. The Bandits will look to build upon that freshly-minted record and end their 2016 American Legion Baseball season on a high note when they travel to Calgary for the Dan Lawson Memorial Tournament this weekend (July 22 to 24). “I want them to see that they can play the game in tight situations, some of them, and also just make the routine plays, quick innings, get guys on base, move them around and generate runs,” Mrazek said. “Usually we have our one big inning where we string three or four hits together and that’s usually good for three or four runs. “I just want to see them go play the way they can and be relaxed out there.” The Bandits will play a doubleheader Saturday, taking on the host Calgary Redbirds (12 p.m.) before facing Inside Pitch Regina (3 p.m.). The final game of round-robin action will pit the Bandits against NW Premier Baseball (Post Falls) on Sunday at 9 a.m. before the bronze medal game (12 p.m.) and gold medal game (3 p.m.).

Calgary Stampede attendance hits 22-year low as rain thins crowds DAN HEALING Canadian Press
CALGARY - The Calgary Stampede recorded its lowest attendance in 22 years, organizers of the event said Monday, dealing yet another blow for businesses that were hoping for an economic shot in the arm from the annual shindig. “A lot of small businesses count on having a good Stampede as a high point in their overall year,” said Scott Crockatt, a spokesman for the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. “We’ve heard from businesses already that this was a weak spending Stampede in terms of meals and entertainment, so we’re particularly concerned about an impact on many of the hospitality businesses in Calgary.” Persistent rains are being blamed for cumulative attendance of just 1,088,000 at the 10-day show that ended Sunday, the lowest it has been since 1994, when 1,082,000 came through the turnstiles. This year’s total is down about seven per cent from last year and off 13 per cent from the fiveyear average of 1.23 mil-
lion. “The weather was pretty atrocious for Stampede,” said public relations manager Jennifer Booth. “I mean, we’ve seen some rain during Stampede before, but the full duration of 10 days, I don’t think anybody has seen it in their history with the Stampede. It affects people’s attitudes.” Still, she said organizers are satisfied with achieving more than one million visitors, pointing out they had aimed only to match last year’s attendance given the state of the provincial economy, which has slowed dramatically because of low oil and gas prices. She said some of the Stampede’s major sponsors dropped out this year but the exhibition was able to replace them. The attendance figures were released the same day that TD Economics came out with a report saying Alberta’s current economic downturn will likely be more severe than any of its past four recessions. Stampede attendance was in line with previous years for the first few days of the show but fell off as rain
repeatedly pelted the grounds last week, prompting officials to cut its $18 general admission price to $5 between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. On Sunday, 65,000 guests took advantage of a special offer of free admission in the morning and half-price tickets were available for the evening rodeo and Grandstand Show. Marketing manager Jenna MacMillan of Lammle’s Western Wear and Tack said overall sales revenue was on par with previous years at its nine temporary stores on the Stampede grounds, but the product mix this year was different. She said the dreary weather resulted drove higher sales of sweater and hoodies as well as thousands of plastic rain ponchos. “We saw more movement in pieces for people to layer up,” she said. “A lot of the Calgary Stampede merchandise is sweaters and stuff like that and we definitely saw some of that move a little bit more.” Lammle’s hired about 200 temporary staff for the event, MacMillan said.
Artist who created loonie coin design dies at 78 PETER GOFFIN Canadian Press
The man who created the design for Canada’s loonie coin has died. Artist Robert-Ralph Carmichael’s image of a solitary loon was introduced in 1987, when Canada replaced its one dollar bill with a coin. It was “the most significant change to Canada’s coinage system in over 50 years,” the Royal Canadian Mint said. “Since that time, Mr. Carmichael’s design has appeared on over one billion one-dollar coins,” the mint said in a statement. “We thank him for his remarkable contribution in creating what has become a true Canadian symbol.” Carmichael died Saturday at a hospice in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. He was 78 years old. He also produced designs for some of the mint’s commemorative coins and created a loon stamp for Canada Post. When the mint originally announced it would replace its one dollar bill with a coin as a cost-cutting measure, it was supposed to carry a version of a silver dollar from 1935 that was
produced to mark the silver jubilee of King George V. The silver dollar’s design, which featured an aboriginal man and a voyageur paddling a canoe laden with packages, paid tribute to Canada’s historical fur trade. But when the mint decided to reproduce the design, the dies that would have been used to cast the new coins were lost in transit between Ottawa and the mint’s production facility in Winnipeg. Worried that counterfeit versions of the voyageur coin might surface, the mint selected a new design - Carmichael’s image of a loon - and released the new dollar coins on June 30, 1987. In 1992, Carmichael’s hometown of Echo Bay, Ont., near Sault Ste. Marie, erected a giant Loonie monument in tribute to the artist’s design. In a written statement for Concordia University’s Centre for Contemporary Canadian Art, Carmichael wrote that a major theme of his work was the human condition and our relationships with the environment and each other.

CLEVELAND - Over angry and prolonged objections from anti-Donald Trump forces, Republican Party leaders approved rules for their national convention on Monday and rejected a demand for a state-by-state roll call vote, a discordant start to a gathering designed to project unity.
Despite demands from social conservatives and other Trump foes for a roll call, hundreds of socially conservative delegates opposed to nominating Trump protested noisily after the convention’s presiding officer, Arkansas GOP Rep. Steve Womack, abruptly put the rules to a vote and declared them approved by voice.

These people don’t tend to mix often. Political science research has extensively chronicled a widening political canyon in this country, with left and right increasingly isolated from each other and clustered into separate, ideologically uniform regions, industries, families, educational choices, even families.
One woman holding a “Stop Trump” sign said the nominee-in-waiting didn’t create this country’s divisions over things like race. But she said he pours gasoline on them. “He’s bringing those underlying issues and bubbling them up, bringing out the worst in people,” said Sarah Schmidt, a Bernie Sanders supporter who said she’ll vote for Clinton in November because she can’t stand the thought of President Trump. Inside the convention hall down the street, a loud faction of Republicans felt the same way. They booed as the party shut down an effort to force a vote on Trump’s nomination, and proceedings were briefly paused by the protest. Outside on the street, a group of LGBT protesters taunted the right-wingers. They chanted: “We’re queer, we’re here.” One man from the stage responded: “You’re queer, you’re all going to hell.” Police used bicycles
to keep the groups a few metres apart. The right-wingers thanked police officers: “We support you,” one said, as the group rolled up its posters and left. A state police officer breathed a relieved sigh as the group moved on. One group of police officers on bikes followed them through downtown Cleveland. Eventually, they wound up in a different public square. A former military man in a “Hillary For Prison” T-shirt waved a U.S. flag. He paused as a Muslim woman in a hijab walked by with her son, handing out pens with roses they’d made inscribed with the message, “Salam Means Peace.” Shawn Witte took a moment to talk to them: “You’re putting out message that Muslims aren’t bad. I appreciate it. ... It takes cojones to do that. Especially here.” As they chatted, terrorism came up. Witte said he wanted to hear Muslims denounce it
more loudly. Samir and Rose Hamid insisted it happens all the time even if it doesn’t make the news. A former U.S. marine, Witte said he’s had experiences that don’t leave him favourably disposed to Muslims. But he said he’d always wanted to see the inside of a mosque, and find out what things are really like in there. The mother and son took his number. They promised to put him in touch with friends in his home state of California. As they parted ways, they reached an agreement on the power of listening. The younger Hamid said normal, healthy political disagreements need not automatically turn into shouting matches. Witte insisted he will check out the mosque. “Maybe I won’t agree with (what I hear). Maybe after the end I’ll think it’s all BS and nonsense,” he said. “But the fact is, I owe it to my country to try to understand this.”

First Nation warns of using blockades to protect B.C. burial site C AMILLE BAINS Canadian Pres
VANCOUVER Members of a British Columbia First Nation are remembering a warrior chief who was wrongfully hanged 151 years ago and say they won’t allow another injustice to be done to their ancestor. The First Nation says a service was held Monday at the site of a high school in New Westminster, B.C., which was built atop a former cemetery where the remains of Tsilhqot’in war Chief Ahan may have been buried after he was executed on July 18, 1865. Joe Alphonse, tribal chairman of the Tsilhqot’in national government, said four of six chiefs attended the ceremony and that members smudged the grounds, made a tobacco offering and drummed songs to pay tribute to Ahan. Alphonse said there are no records to indicate that the warrior’s remains were taken to the cemetery after originally being buried at a courthouse square in the city. However, he said the First Nation will fight to preserve Ahan’s remains even if there is “a oneper cent chance” that they’re at the school site. Construction to replace the run-down school built in 1949 is slated to begin next year elsewhere on the same property, and the Education Ministry said an archeologist will ensure that any artifacts are appropriately recorded. Education Minister Mike Bernier has said the school was built “in the wrong place” and that constructing a new school will fix that problem. Alphonse wants protocols in place about the proper handling of any
bones that could be found and warned the First Nation would mount blockades or file a court challenge to stop construction if necessary. “All we’ve ever asked for from the New Westminster School Board is, in the event that you run into some bones do the honourable thing. Do a DNA sample and let us know if that’s him. They refused to do that so we’re not going to run that risk. So we’ll shut it down. We’ll use every means we can.” The board couldn’t be reached for comment, but says on its website that it plans to use non-intrusive means, such as ground penetrating radar, to find out more about the school property before soil investigations that are scheduled for next month. “Those activities are important for proper project planning and respecting the heritage of the site,” it says. Premier Christy Clark apologized nearly two years ago for the hanging of Ahan and five other chiefs in Quesnel in 1864 during a bloody dispute known as the Chilcotin War. The chiefs were hanged after 19 people were killed in a dispute over the construction of a road through Tsilhqot’in territory. The government militia couldn’t capture the chiefs, but they were lured out of hiding when they received overtures to speak with the government. They were arrested and tried for murder. The road was never built. Clark also signed an agreement with the Tsilhqot’in to work together on social and economic initiatives.

When we first met, he was dating “Sofi.” He broke off the relationship with her when he met me. The breakup was extremely difficult for Sofi, and she had trouble letting go. Recently, Jack’s job has brought the two of them back into contact. This job is a really good opportunity for Jack, but I’m afraid Sofi still hasn’t gotten over him. She calls constantly on his cellphone and finds ways to work late nights with him. She has a relatively good position in the company, and her opinion of him counts. A week ago, at the last minute, Jack’s boss invited him for a four-day outing at his lake cabin to discuss his future with the company. I didn’t mind the command performance, but I did not care for the fact that Sofi also was there. It bothers me that Jack has to work so closely with her. He hasn’t told her that we are married (he says it is none of her business), and he insists there is nothing going on between them. He says he works long hours in order to make more money for us and our children. Annie, I am confused. If I complain, he offers to quit, saying my happiness means a lot to him. But I don’t want him to resent me for making him stop doing what he loves. Should I just be quiet and see what happens? I trust my husband, but I don’t trust Sofi. -- Odd Woman Out Dear Odd Woman: One’s marital status may not be the business of a casual stranger, but an old flame carrying an Olympic torch ought to have this pertinent piece of information. By withholding it, Jack is giving Sofi hope for a relationship. This isn’t fair to her, and it certainly is suspicious to us. We think you should invite some of Jack’s professional colleagues to your home for a casual dinner, and be sure to include Sofi. Let them get to know you. If Jack objects to this perfectly appropriate gesture, you may have cause for concern. Dear Annie: I read your column every day, and I now find myself in need of your advice. I am 30 years old and suffer from depression. I don’t mean “sometimes I feel blue” depression. It is much more than that. I have good days and bad days, but there seem to be a lot more bad days lately. Sometimes it takes all I have just to get out of bed. I no longer find joy in the things I once did. I don’t even like to go out anymore. Not a day goes by that I don’t cry, and half the time I’m not sure why. People tell me things could be worse or the famous “Smile! How bad can it be?” Well, I don’t want to find out. I have people around who love me, so why am I so sad and lonely? I will admit that I have even cut myself to take the “sad” away. For now, I breathe in and out to get through the days. Where do I go from here? -- Anyone in Anywhere, USA Dear Anyone: You go directly to your doctor and ask for a referral to a therapist. You sound clinically depressed, which means the “sad” isn’t going to go away without some professional intervention, which may include medication. Dear Annie: I read the letter from the man whose wife wants her mother to move back in with them, when it didn’t work out so well the first time. Lucia was born in Cranbrook of July 1st, 1941 and spent her early childhood in Canal Flats until her family moved to reside in Kimberley where she completed her schooling. Lucia moved to Cranbrook together with her Mother Frances, in 1975. Lucia is survived by her sister, Susan (Grahame) Dunlop, her nephew, Justin (Sarah) Dunlop, their two sons Rhys and Orin, her niece Meghan (James) Hatala, their two sons, Carter and Lincoln, and her nephew Jake Wernitznig (girlfriend Candice). She was predeceased by her Father, Jacob and her Mother, Frances (nee Nemrava), her brother Frank Wernitznig and her sister-in-law Cherry Wernitznig. Where Porthos the snapping turtle went for 12 days will likely remain a mystery. But thanks to an observant Langley RCMP officer, the reptile is now back home, after he was found strolling in downtown Aldergrove. The turtle’s owner said she went to check on her pet, which she thought was secured in a covered pool outside
a snapping turtle’s neck is flexible enough that it can bite the hand of a person who is holding it by its shell. Snapping turtles have extremely powerful jaws and sharp claws, making them particularly dangerous when they feel threatened. An officer on foot patrol in downtown Langley, in the 26200 block of Fraser Highway looked down at his feet and saw Porthos coming his way. “The officer knew
in her backyard, on June 29. But Porthos was nowhere to be found. She searched the area near her home in the 26500 block of 30 Avenue, but couldn’t find the animal. Fearing he had been stolen, she called police. “The owner cautioned officers about handling Porthos if he was found,” said Langley RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Holly Largy. According to a U.S. animal control website,
that the turtle had been missing,” said Largy. “When he picked it up the turtle retreated into its shell and didn’t come out again until its owner said his name. That’s how we confirmed ownership.” Police don’t know whether the turtle was stolen or had escaped. Wet weather dampens B.C. wildfire costs C ANADIAN PRESS
A provincial fire official says rain has dampened wildfire conditions across B.C. this summer. Hot, dry conditions fuelled a number of blazes early in May, especially in the northeast of the province, but Claire Allen with the B.C. Wild-
fire service says wet weather has created a downturn in fire activity over the past month. She says the early fires spiked the wildfire service’s costs and the province has now spent $72.7 million fighting fires this year. The province had spent $111 million by
this point in 2015. Allen says warm weather is expected in the coming weeks, and crews are prepared to handle any fires that weather may bring. There have been 533 fires throughout the province this year, torching 934 square kilometres.
