Art in the Park season kicks of with chalk creations International street performers set to visit Sylvan Lake thanks to partnership with Centrefest BY JENNA SWAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS The sidewalks of Centennial Park were uniquely adorned on Wednesday afternoon as part of the Town

of Sylvan Lake’s 3rd annual Art in the Park. Professional chalk artist Rozzie created two magnificent masterpieces over the course of two hours as part of the first of four Art in the Park events. Rozzie’s chalk work was accompanied not only by that

of youngsters and adults alike along nearby sidewalks, attendees also had the chance to take in the musical accompaniment of the band Sometimes Scarlett, with the House of Music, who entertained the crowd and added to the creative flow of the day. Art in the Park takes place each Wednesday at Centennial Park starting at 11:30 a.m. Michelle Morrison, Special Events Coordinator for the Town of Sylvan Lake explained this year’s Art in the Park events offer a broad range of activities on the artistic spectrum. “It’s a great place for people to wander down during their lunch hours and with kids not being in school during the summer it’s a great activity for families, with all of the activities each week being completely free,” explained Morrison. Next week’s event held on Wednesday July 27 will feature Zap Circus’ Purple People Show. The international performing artists will be hosting a ‘Make your own juggling balls workshop’ from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. with a one-hour performance to follow. Based out of Australia, the award-winning duo is set to make another high impact performance the following weekend at Central Alberta’s largest street performer festival – Centrefest, held annually in downtown Red Deer on July 30 and 31. The Wednesday following Zap Circus’ performance, Centennial Park will see another guest of Centrefest gracing their grass as Noah and Uri Weiss of Cirque No Problem perform two 45-minute shows. These professional circus artists originally based in Israel have been performing around the world since 1995. They are known for a particularly unique combination of theatrics, acrobatic techniques and juggling routines. “We’ve been working closely with Centrefest and we really value that partnership,” explained Morrison who added the Town may not have been able to secure international performing artists like these two groups had it not been for their partnership with Centrefest. “They have been amazing to work with and we are very fortunate to be able to have these international performers coming to Sylvan Lake.” Aside from Zap Circus and Cirque No Problem, Centrefest 2016 will also host a number of street performers including ‘Flip!’ a high-flying, three-person acrobatic comedy trampoline show out of Quebec and ‘The Puppet Guy’, a rock and roll marionette show. The Art in the Park finale for the season will be Painting in the Park, where an art instructor will be on site to assist as much as individuals would like, with free acrylic paint and supplies being provided. Musical accompaniment will also be provided on this day by the Joel Kamps Duo, who is known for his blend of storytelling with acoustic music. editor@sylvanlakenews.com

TODD COLIN VAUGHAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS The situation with the Town of Sylvan Lake’s wastewater lagoons has been reduced from a “critical” stage to an “on alert” stage, according to the Town’s Communications Officer, Joanne Gaudet. This reduction is attributed to; firstly, to some of the effluent is being hauled to Red Deer; secondly, a slow discharge which was approved by the province last week; and thirdly, and most effectively according to Gaudet, the voluntary reduction in wastewater from the people of Sylvan Lake. “The most effective resource in the community are the people and their willingness to understand and support the cause,” Gaudet said. “We could have thrown a whole lot of money at something to mitigate the situation but we had a lot of faith that calling for local support would help – and it did. We noticed a change in inflow.” That change in inflow, according to Gaudet has Town administration “not as anxious, but definitely still on alert and monitoring every waking moment.” Voluntary wastewater restrictions still do remain in affect, however, the most recent 96 hour tests, which test the fish lethality in Cygent Lake and Cygnet Creek were performed on Monday, July 18 and will shed some light either Thursday, July 21 or Friday, July 22 on whether they can be removed and regular water use can be resumed. “We want to ensure regularly occurring passing tests before we call this complete,” Gaudet added. The cost of hauling effluent to Red Deer using seven trucks per day over a

12 hour period does come with an estimated cost of $10 per cubic meter, for a total of 1600 cubic meters – totalling $16,000, however, this cost is included in the Town’s Emergency Reserve Funds and will not affect ratepayers, according to Gaudet. According to Gaudet, the long-term solutions for the lagoons is management as well as Town Council lobbying from provincial and federal infrastructure support. “We know that we are not the only community across Canada that has infrastructure concerns – it’s kind of a national crisis,” Gaudet said. “Ultimately we are hopeful because we have the Water for Life Fund through the province.” This is a fund that the Town applied for back in 2006, which would provide financial support for water related infrastructure. Many municipalities have applied for this fund and according to Gaudet, the most recent provincial government has reinstated funds for the program. “We are hoping, fingers crossed, that we will have access to that,” she added As far as the immediate situation, Gaudet feels that the Town has seen the worst of it. “As long as we are cognizant of water usage – we are going to be good,” she said. She added that it would have been “absolutely devastating” if these waterways were affected by the effluent and that the watershed in the region is part of the Town’s “being, culture and everything we do.” Reporter@sylvanlakenews.com

Summer has arrived. Across our province, families are hitting the road to make the most of their vacations, rediscovering the great outdoors, joining local parades, and attending festivals. It’s that wonderful time of year when folks have a chance to reconnect with each other; for a few short months we are all Alberta bound. Unfortunately, for too many of us, it is not the Alberta we remember. Over the past year, we have seen a sharp downturn in our energy sector spill over into every sector of our economy, causing steep recession. When the province that once led Canada in growth now leads the country in employment insurance claims, we know something has gone drastically wrong. The hardship this is placing on our friends and neighbours is also very real, and it is not slowing down. Alberta lost 40,000 jobs in May alone. That doesn’t look like the Alberta I remember. In my opinion, it comes down to stewardship. As Albertans we have been given a trust—a beautiful endowment of land, water and air over which we have a solemn duty to be good stewards. Not to mention looking out for each other. All of these endowments contain a rich bounty of renewable and non-renewable resources that can, and should, provide economic and social benefits to our people, our friends and relatives. We have the capability in this province to improve our standard of living, our health, the wealth of our people, and also provide a sustainable economic future for our children. Stewardship demands that the use of our endowments be conducted in a manner that is as sustainable and responsible as possible. The NDP government has proven incapable of adapting to these changing circumstances, and stewarding the resources we’ve been given, choosing instead to stick with its high-tax, high-debt agenda come hell or high water. In the past year the government has increased income taxes, business taxes, fuel taxes, beer taxes, and just about every fee imaginable. When they ran out of taxes to raise, they started inventing new taxes. These new taxes are hitting Albertans at exactly the wrong time, and stagnating the economy. As a result, the Province’s deficit is larger than projected, our debt rose to $19.5 billion, and taxpayers wasted $776 million on interest payments. Is it any won-

If Prime Minister Pierre paced, full-scale energy audit and

retrofit program across Alberta on large public buildings such as hospitals and schools to provide accurate cost/benefit estimates to municipalities to assist them in decision-making when looking at energy savings opportunities in retrofitting older buildings. Utility bills are intentionally complicated, to the point that most Albertans do not understand the true cost of electricity. Those who do, see no real benefit in reducing consumption because so much of their bill is not related to their consumption. Albertans should have billing arrangements that are directly tied to consumption and allow for creative metering options that encourage Albertans to embrace energy efficiency and alternative energy options. We have clean coal technology developed right here that could allow us to continue to use our abundant and inexpensive coal reserves to produce cheap power, and provide an added benefit of enhanced oil recovery for some of Alberta’s largely untapped oil reserves. In addition, stiff global competition in the manufacturing sector is forcing many nations back to coal-fired generation providing a technology export opportunity for what could be developed here. We believe technology is the key to resolving the emissions issues with any fuel we choose to use, not blanket bans regardless of efficiencies gained. Global competition requires us to explore every option. These are just a few of the ideas we are exploring with other Albertans. Wildrose will continue to build a made-in-Alberta plan to improve our electricity system and tackle the issues of pollution associated with electricity production and use. The exciting news is that Albertans have the stewardship ideas and talent to create and build a much better future for our children. They just need a government that will let them do it. Our Wildrose Official Opposition’s vision for the future is as it has ever been: An Alberta, strong and free, where hard work and dedication bring new hope and new opportunity for generations to come. These values aren’t just rural values or conservative values: they’re Albertan values. Regardless of the NDP’s future intentions, Albertans recognize it’s time to get back to what works. That’s exactly what we’re going to do. We’ll get through this recession the same way we always have – together.

Second annual Sylvan Lake Show n Shine set to take place this weekend Accelerated Revolutions Foundation tells story of local beginnings BY JENNA SWAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

The Accelerated Revolution Foundation may have had humble beginnings but those days are long gone as they head into their second year of hosting the Sylvan Lake Show N Shine. The event is garnishing ample attention throughout Alberta on social media according to president of the not for profit Foundation, Crystal Rhayn who explained much of the chatter is due to the

success of last year’s event. The inaugural Sylvan Lake Show N’ Shine saw just over $3’200 being donated to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and 123 cars in attendance. “Accelerated Revolution started with a small team of people who had a passion for vehicles. We all come from a background of wanting to help others and do as much good as we can,” said Rhayn during an interview with Sylvan Lake News. “We try to donate to the different caus-

Rhayn’s youngest of two sons, ages 7 and 4, had trouble breathing when he was born and was placed in the Stollery’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). “He was in the NICU for a total of 18 hours, he just needed a little bit of extra help to breathe, but it was the longest 18 hours of my life,” said Rhayn. “I know people who have had children in the NICU for months, so being a mom I just wanted to help as much as I could and as a group we wanted give back in any way we can to the people who have helped us. “Our group all come from very different backgrounds, ethnic origins and parts of Canada but our passions brought us together. We all look out for each other as much as we can and we try to spread that with as many other people as we can.” In the short time the group has known one another they have worked towards helping a number of other organizations that are near and dear to members. Rhayn said the car club tries to host three to four events a year outside of the Show N Shine itself. Over this past year the club also held a large fundraiser for the Kidney Foundation in support of another club member who has been experiencing kidney failure for nearly ten years. During the Fort McMurray wildfires the club vice president also lost their childhood home prompting members of the Accelerated Revolution Foundation to help in any way they could. The team made several supply trips to Fort McMurray, as well as helped to collect pets.

Second annual Sylvan Lake Show n Shine continued from page 6 “Around Christmas time this year we also did a ride for Santa’s Anonymous and the Christmas Bureau. We plan to do that again this year and include the Food Bank again,” added Rhayn. With this year’s show hosting 37 vendors and an expected 800 – 1000 cars, Accelerated Revolutions hopes they will be able to help out in an even bigger way. Entry categories for the 2016 Sylvan Lake Show N Shine include Best In Show, Best Build Performance, Best Sound, Best In Red Deer, Best In Edmonton and Best In Calgary. This year’s judges for the regional competition will be the from the Youth Initiatives & Education in Lifestyles and Driving Association (YIELD) an initiative operating by the RCMP aiming to make the roadways safer. YIELD members will narrow down each category to their favourite two entries with the crowd getting the final say in what Rhayn describes as a ‘cheer out’. “We couldn’t of done this if we weren’t a team. We are really excited to see the variety we have entered this year,” she added.“We have exotics, semi trucks, Harleys, crotch rockets, trucks, cars. It really is a show for car enthusiasts and we are really excited to see what people bring out and lay more groundwork as a club.” The second annual Sylvan Lake Show N Shine will be held this Saturday, July 23 at Meadowlands Golf Club from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Wrestling with God In Genesis chapter 32, you can read the story of how Jacob wrestled with God. This is one of those stories that for years I have found just kind of odd. It’s a weird story. Here’s why this story has always befuddled me, if Jacob was wrestling with God, why couldn’t God beat him? It says God couldn’t overpower Jacob. Now, at this point in the story Jacob is 97 years old. I think my toddler could put up a fight against a 97 year old man. God is allpowerful, and he shows a miniscule amount of that power when he wrecks Jacob’s hip with just a touch, so why did God bother to physically wrestle him all night? What’s really going on here? This moment, this night of wrestling was the physical manifestation of a spiritual struggle that had been going on throughout Jacob’s whole life. God could have overcome Jacob physically at any moment, but this was not about the physical matchup. This was

The wrestler was not able to overcome Jacob, not because he didn’t have the strength, but because Jacob would not surrender to Him. Jacob had been fighting for control his whole life. THANK YOU! To all our residents, business owner/operators, and visitors for your support & cooperation during our voluntary wastewater restrictions The Town of Sylvan Lake has received the latest results of a 96-hour effluent lethality test, which reveal compliancy with federal regulations. A discharge plan is now underway, for Cell 9, of the Town’s wastewater treatment facility; although, staff emphasize that there are still serious concerns moving forward. Effluent lethality testing is ongoing, and discharge will cease immediately if effluent is determined to be acutely lethal to fish, or if negative effects are observed in the receiving environment. Voluntary wastewater restrictions are still in effect, with Town staff noting a sizeable difference in the amount of wastewater entering the lagoons over the past few days, indicating massive support and cooperation from the Sylvan Lake public in reducing inflow, and alleviating immediate pressures on the wastewater facility. The Town of Sylvan Lake will continue to move forward with plans to see a Temporary Diversion License from Alberta Environment & Parks, which will help moderate the flow of the creek during discharge. The Town will also submit a formal request for an amendment to our approval to authorize a continuous discharge from now until November 30, weather and testing dependent. Trucking of effluent to the City of Red Deer will also continue until we achieve another passing lethality test result. For more information, and for updates, please visit www.sylvanlake.ca

The Town of Sylvan Lake is fighting through the economic downturn and will “emerge strong because we are planning, strategizing and working together, according to Mayor Sean McIntyre. The month of June saw the reopening of two businesses in Sylvan Lake – Rowanoak Law and Snap Fitness. The new building is co-owned by the businesses and the process of construction was “a long process but well worth it, according to Snap Fitness co-owner Leigh Ostiguy. The expansion and redevelopment of these businesses is indicative of a local economy that continues to grow despite economic adversity, and according to Ostiguy, the business community has “stronger communication and greater knowledge on how to “unify and grow the community. This knowledge, according Mayor McIntyre, stems from relationship building with community business. “We know that by working with the business community, with our residents and with the Chamber of Commerce – we are going to weather the storm together, McIntyre said. According to McIntyre, many businesses see Sylvan Lake as “home and that both businesses and the Town will be “resilient and continue to plan our futures in the area. This resiliency has led to economic growth in commercial business licenses, with commercial permits growing from $250,000 to $3,000,000 in just one year. “I think that indicates private sector confidence in Sylvan Lake and the Town’s ability to weather the economic storm, McIntyre said. While maintaining relationships is important, it is not the Town’s place to “regulate business competition according to McIntyre. “It is important when it comes to proposals to ensure we take a long hard look at them and ensure that it is going to suit the community going forward, he said. “When it comes to folks planning businesses – as long as the land fits – business licences are usually granted. He added that the Town’s place is to ensure that infrastructure is prepared for growth in any economic forecast. “As a municipality, we continually plan for our future with infrastructure improvements like roads, sidewalks and utility replacements, he said. “We spend a lot of time developing master plans for things like transportation and our Social Master plan, which was just adopted at council. “We also pay close attention to the economy and our plans moving forward do include the possibility of economic downturns. He added that the Town has a “deep understanding of those hardest hit by low oil prices and continually fosters plans for struggling local business. While oil prices do affect all industries in Sylvan Lake, the Town is in an advantageous position because of its “business diversity, according to McIntyre. “Although our businesses have reported losses, we have noticed that 75 per cent of them have still reported benefits from tourism, he said. He added that the Town relies on strategic partnerships with the Chamber and private businesses and that “no matter what economic climate we find ourselves in – we learn that we are better together.

On Saturday, July 9 – hundreds gathered at Meadowlands Golf Course for the 10th annual Sylvan Lake Customs and Classics Show and Shine. One of the day’s participants, Stan Norem, was showing off a red 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe that took him years to track down. “It was in Biggar, SK after it came up from the states about 40 years ago,” he said. “I tried to but the car about 35 years ago, but couldn’t make the deal work. Then, about 33 years ago, a dentist from Three Hills, AB bought the car. “I was after it for a long time and finally ended up with it after buying it eight years ago.”

The vehicle was well worth the wait for Norem, as he has put hundreds of hours into the restoration of the vehicle including changing the paint and installing a new transmission. “You definitely have to take a little pride in that,” Norem said. “I’ve taken it into lots of shows the last few years. Its great and I just really love it.” Ewald and Betty Anne Braun, also take a lot of pride in their 1931 Model A Victoria, which they restored after finding it falling to pieces while travelling in Oregon.

“It took a year and a half to restore and we have been driving it for a year now,” Mr. Braun said, joking after saying that he couldn’t tell you how much money he put into the restoration because “he would have to kill you.” Organizer Gord Bredo was happy with the day’s events, despite a looming and overbearing weather forecast. “We matched what we had last year, which is 200 cars already,” he said. reporter@sylvanlakenews.com

Bucs’ clinch first place Team remains undefeated through six games PHOTOS AND STORY SUBMITTED BY BUCCANEERS FOOTBALL The Central Alberta Buccaneers have secured first place in the AFL with a victory over the Calgary Gators. On the rainy Saturday, July 16th, the Bucs’ travelled south to take on the 3rdplace Gators in Calgary. The playoff implications of this game were significant – a Buccaneer loss meant that the Bucs’, the Gators and the Fort McMurray Monarchs would be in a 3-way tie for first place. The seedings for playoffs would then be decided by score differentials (which the Bucs would have likely lost). The pirate crew had to win against the Gators if they wanted to clinch first place (and the favourable playoff

schedule that comes with first place). The Bucs kicked off their game well. The defense was able to hold of the Gators’ tandem-quarterback team of Jordan Heather and Darryl Leason. Numerous Gator passes were knocked down, incomplete, and even picked off by the talented Buccaneer secondary. The Gators run game was eaten up as well. In addition to the defense, the Bucs special teams were tenacious; the so-called “Spades”

flew around the field and played a very physical game. Going into the first half, the Bucs lead, 27-7. The pirate offense was sharp as well; despite heavy Gator pressure and blitzing, QB Brandon Leyh found his receivers downfield (for both short and large passing attempts). In the fourth quarter, Leyh went down with an ankle injury and was unable to continue playing; team offense slowed in the final quarter. The Gators made a final

push and managed to narrow the gap with a few quick touchdowns (and short kickoff attempts). Regardless, the Bucs held on for the victory, 43-32. With this win, Central Alberta is now 6-0 on the season. Not only does this secure first-place, it marks the first time the Bucs have gone undefeated this far into the regular season. The team will be striving to hold on for the two remaining games of the regular season. The next matchup for the Bucs is at home against the Airdrie Irish. The Irish were the league expansion team in 2015; while they are still building, they have some talented players that will definitely challenge the Bucs. Additionally, both teams are continuing their new Pink Game tradition; both charge their players and fans to raise pledges and dress in pink for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The team that raises the most pledges earns the Pink Game title and holds it until the following year (the Irish were the victors in 2015). Any interested in donating can do so at the game (July 23rd at 6 p.m., held at Lacombe’s MEGlobal Athletic Park) or can donate online at www.gofundme.com/bucsbcagame. Local golfer named 2016 Alberta Junior Boys Champion STORY COURTESY OF ALBERTA GOLF It may not have been the final day he was expecting, but after Cottonwood Golf and Country Club was forced to close the course due to heavy rains that flooded fairways this morning, Jaxon Lynn is the 2016 Alberta Junior Boys Champion. Lynn carded a tournament total of -6, 207, finishing eight strokes ahead of his nearest competitor. Dedication and plenty of practice played a big part in Lynn’s win this week. When asked about his play throughout the tournament, Lynn responded, “on the first day, I didn’t putt very well. And then I spent about two hours on the putting green after the first round. Ever since then I started putting well.” Chandler McDowell’s impressive third round, where he shot -5, 66, would prove to be enough as he walks away with the title of 2016 Alberta Juvenile Boys Champion. The Alberta Junior Boys Interprovincial Team will consist of the respective champions, Lynn and McDowell, as well as Matt Bean who earned the final spot. Lynn and McDowell each shot a round of 66 throughout the tournament, and a 68 and 69 on days one and three propelled Bean to his impressive overall finish.

Sylvan Lake hosts 1st Annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament Lakeshore to be closed for hoops action TODD COLIN VAUGHAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Canadian Dr. James Naismith’s game, basketball, is coming to Lakeshore Drive. On Saturday, August 27 – The Town of Sylvan Lake’s Recreation and Culture office is putting on a 3-on-3 basketball tournament where 20 teams will compete against each other for Sylvan Lake supremacy. “It will be near the beach, so we will be closing down Lakeshore Drive between 46th and 49th Street,” said Jordan Naturkach, Program Coordinator for the Recreation and Culture Department. “It is for anyone of all skill levels and it is an opportunity for adults to come out and play basketball.” The event, which costs $60 for a team of 4-6 people, will be broken up into a men’s division and a co-ed division – each consisting of 10 teams. These divisions will be further broken up into three divisions based on skill level: recreation, intermediate and competitive. “There will be games all day and it will all be played on that day,” Naturkach said, adding that a rain day has been scheduled for the following day, Sunday, August 28, if necessary. “There will be prizes, of which we aren’t 100 per cent sure yet, but we are looking at getting gift cards for some restaurants on Lakeshore for the winners,” he said. “They can have a beer and supper after the tournament is over. The idea for this first annual event came after Naturkach and the staff at Recreation and Culture began discussing his previous experience in basketball and how other municipalities, like Calgary and Edmonton, have been putting on 3-on-3 tournaments like this for many years. “This is just an opportunity for people in Sylvan and around the province to play some organized basketball,” he said. “We just wanted to bring something local.” Proceeds for this event will go to the charity You

We have a four year old and this sort of thing happens a fair bit. But we try to teach him the value of things and that the bank machine isn’t magic and unlimited. When something breaks, he either asks for a new one or just asks me to fix it. However, some things cannot be fixed. ‘Why?’ is typically the immediate reply. If you are a parent, you know this. As parents, we are trying to not only teach him to value his stuff, but to realize that if you take care of it you will have it forever. Sadly, I meet lots of people that come to us at the gym looking to be ‘fixed’. Ultimately, it’s what we do at the gym is help people but some things cannot be fixed, only worked around. Some things could have been prevented, most things actually. I really love that my son asks me ‘Why?’ 100 times a day. To help mitigate the situation, and to increase the flow within Cygnet Creek, the Town of Sylvan Lake will apply for a Temporary Diversion License (TDL), from Alberta Environment and Parks with the intention of pumping water from Sylvan Lake into Cygnet Creek. Cygnet Creek is the natural outflow of Sylvan Lake, so water will not be removed from the watershed as a result of this TDL. The proposed moderation of flow in Cygnet Creek will help reduce potential negative impacts of the Town’s wastewater lagoon effluent discharge on the receiving environment. A dry spring and previously low creek flow has reduced the creek’s ability to receive such discharge thus far in 2016. The Town of Sylvan Lake is prepared to take comments, questions, or concerns, with respect to the request for a Temporary Diversion License, which is dependent on approval from Alberta Environment and Parks. Please direct any comments, questions, or concerns to:

medications for all manner of mythical illnesses that were all caused by eating garbage and being lazy. That’s a fact. Once I started eating well and exercising, every single one of my problems went away. Why take a good multi vitamin? To top up the deficiencies in what you do eat, because it is likely you are missing some things. This time of year, when local produce is abundant, it’s not so bad if you make good choices. In the dark of winter when our produce comes from a country that doesn’t care about quality and picks the food before it’s ripe so it can get here before it rot then it’s really a problem. There are 22 minerals in good soil, but we fertilize with three. Over time, that means only three minerals in our food, so we need to top the system up with a good multi vitamin, and support local organic farmers. So when my son asks me ‘Why?’ a thousand times a day, I just smile, because the answer is important. If you break your body, you cannot get another one, so instead of thinking how you should eat well, what is the best way to exercise or if you should take a vitamin, ask yourself why those are important. Then it will get done. Happy Training! Scott
