“We just want the police to stop harassing us,” Wilson says. “We’re not going anywhere. They can keep raiding and it’s just going to cost the taxpayers money. We’re going to keep staying open. Shut us down one day, we’ll be open the next day. The people want it. It’s helping people. It’s giving them quality of life again.” Marc Emery spent five years in a U.S. prison for operating a mail-order cannabis seed business, and says he’s more focused than ever on addressing what he sees as a “failed policy.” “I’ll go anywhere dispensaries are under fire, at no charge, just to support the idea that we need these dispensaries and that it’s essential to how our legalization is going to look in the years ahead,” he says. “It should never have been against the law. It’s a 50-year failed policy. All we’re doing is correcting an imbalance that’s long overdue. There should have never been a law like this, so we’re going to make sure the law is ineffective by opening these dispensaries.” Marc says there are 300-400 dispensaries

across Canada now, “People love it. They just love coming in and being treated like a first-class citizen, buying in a store just like everyone else and not having to sneak around making surreptitious arrangements or agreements with people.” One of the arguments against letting dispensaries like WeeMedical operate, despite it technically being against the law, is that it’s the role of police to enforce laws, not determine which ones are worth enforcing. Marc, however, says policing, by its very nature, is a “discretionary job.” “Police pick and choose

which laws they enforce every day, every hour, every minute of their job. They see people without seatbelts [on] they don’t always give them a ticket. They see people going too fast, they give them a margin of error. They see people possessing marijuana, they don’t charge them. So, in fact, police officers pick and choose which laws [they enforce] all the time.” And they are ignoring dispensaries in other communities, Marc says, so why not here? “Why has Port Alberni licensed all their pot shops and the police don’t bother them? Why has Victoria licensed their pot shops and

the police don’t bother them? Clearly, the police are ignoring the law at the behest of city council.” Which he says is something Campbell River city council should really be doing, as well. “We n e e d b e tte r direction from Campbell River city council. These dispensaries are not going away, so city council will have to come up with a way to accommodate them. They will not be able to use law enforcement as a way of avoiding that reality. These places are going to pop up more and more all across the Island, and they’re going to stay. It doesn’t matter if you charge us. Each of these places is staffed by a true believer, and going to jail is a badge of honour. Getting charged is a badge of honour. We all want to be able to say when we’re old and we’re talking to our grandkids that this is what we did during the marijuana wars and how we made something legal.” Dr. John Kristensen, a

Smart Canada just made a customer for life. Campbell River’s Chris Markevich was on his way to the Comox airport to pick up his wife Rebecca around 10:45 p.m. on July 14. He had turned onto Highway 19 at Willis Road, gotten up to speed and dimmed his high beams as a car approached in the oncoming side of the highway. When he clicked his high beams back on, there was an approximately 900pound elk in his lane. There was no time to react, he says. “It was just elk, boom,” he says. After hitting the animal, he and his car went airborne. “At least it felt like it,” Markevich says. “I could hear the wind howling through my now-busted windshield. I must have been in the air for at least 2-3 seconds, and then I began to roll. I must have rolled about four or five times.” It wasn’t the cliché “life flashes before your eyes,” scenario, he says. All he remembers is muttering expletives as he and his vehicle “bounced over and over again.” When the car came to rest, it was right side up in the grass median. “My first thought when I landed was, ‘I’d better get out of this car before it catches fire,’ so I very slowly opened the door, got out and started walking away.” He spit a few pieces of glass out of his mouth and could feel blood on his head and hand, but he was, overall, remarkably unscathed. Thankfully, one of the people who stopped to help was a nurse who was on her way to her shift at the hospital, and she patched him up on the side of the highway as he waited for Rebecca to arrive via taxi. Chris Markevich is crediting his Smart car for saving his life after a run-in with an elk on the Inland Island Highway July 14. He was on his way to Comox to get his wife from the airport, but ended up in hospital instead, but only with minor injuries.

So now he’s in the market for another Smart car. “It’s a little bit of ‘who’s laughing now?’ for sure with my friends who mocked it at first,” he says. “When the paramedics and police came, they both told me that if it were any other car, it would likely have hit the elk at the knees and propelled it through the windshield and impaled me. “I am absolutely a Smart car owner for life, now. It’s the reason I’m here today. I would be a fool not to get another one at this point.”

And it seems some of his friends may have changed their opinions, as well, based on the responses to his social media posts about the event. Many, like him, said they knew they were safe cars, but had no idea they would hold up to such an event. “It still plays back in my head and I’m flabbergasted I survived,” he said a few days later on Twitter. “I knew [Smart cars] were safe, but when I saw that elk I thought I was a goner for sure.” “A lot of people see a small car and underestimate it’s [sic] safety,” Smart Canada responded to Markevich’s Twitter post. “We don’t. Happy it was there when Chris needed it.”

The Canadian release of the mobile app Pokemon Go on Sunday gave the remaining holdouts on this side of the U.S. border a chance to join the hunt for mythical creatures in a real-life environment. With many local tech-savvy cellphone users having secured a U.S. version of the app last week, most of us have likely by now witnessed cellphone users wandering around in a trance-like state, holding their devices in front of them like some miniature Geiger counter. But is it all bad news about this latest pop culture phenomenon, which in less than two weeks became the most used mobile game in the U.S., eclipsing Candy Crush, with 21 million daily users? There’s been chatter on both sides about Pokemon Go, from the pros and cons of playing it to the business decisions which led to its release. Critics point to the safety issues related to Pokemon icon hunters not paying attention as a major downfall, but then, some people stopped becoming as aware of their surroundings at the point smartphones got popular. Others will ignore this craze, as they do with all marketing trends and must-have items that clamour for our attention. But we see some positives coming out of this augmented reality experience for players. Young people who tend more toward staying inside on a pleasant day or evening, perched in front of their computers, are suddenly getting outside instead. Our recommendation for Pokemon Go users? Enjoy the augmented reality, but don’t leave the real reality behind. -Black Press

Unfortunately, I didn’t inherit this superpower.I misplace my keys at least once a week. I forget to put the garbage out, even though the schedule is right there on the fridge, where I make too many withdrawals. I can specifically put the remote in a certain place, to be sure of its location when I need to change the channel. Six seconds later, I’m checking the couch cushions because it’s gone. Now, I even have to revert to the old dad standby when I’m asked about a certain thing’s whereabouts. “Dad, have you seen my keys?” “They’re right where you left them.” Now, according the office experts I’ve consulted with to research this particular piece, the mystical superpowers I am referring to are, in fact, a myth. Apparently, men are just lazy, forgetful creatures.I’m not buying it. I know a superhero when I see one.

The Campbell River Fire Department is warning the public to follow a set of precautions when having beach fires, a popular pastime in Campbell River.

Fire department issues warning around beach fires Planning a beach fire this summer? Make sure you bring along a bucket for carrying supplies to the beach, and for transporting water to extinguish the fire when it’s time to go home. “One of the best ways to enjoy a Campbell River evening is to soak in those coastal views while sitting around a warm fire at one of our many beautiful beaches,” says Fire Chief Ian Baikie. “Recreational fires, including beach fires, are currently permitted, but we do need to exercise caution, particu-

larly during the summer months.” Here are more tips for preparing and caring for your next beach fire and those around it. Do not light a beach fire or keep it burning in windy conditions. The wind may carry embers and spread the fire. Since beach fires are not allowed on park land or private property (other than your own), always light beach fires below the high tide line. Recreational fires must not exceed 24 inches (60 centimetres) in diameter.

Chamber pens forest industry recommendations MIKE DAVIES CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The Campbell River Chamber of Commerce has presented the provincial government with a list of recommendations for how to address some of the challenges facing the forestry industry. The letter from the chamber was submitted to the BC Chamber Policy Review Board this past February and was approved at the BC Chamber Annual General Meeting in May. The document, titled, “Creation of a Stable and Prosperous Forest Industry,” says that the provincial forestry industry – one of the key economic drivers of this region, in particular – is struggling because too much land is being taken away from the timber harvesting land base (THLB) for the creation of “Protected Areas and Conservancies.” “In addition there has been a tendency by large forest licensees to take profits earned in Canada (B.C. in particular) and use them to purchase a larger share of the industry in the U.S. south where they have more certainty in the land base. This is detrimental to B.C. communities and needs to be addressed moving for ward to ensure small town communities built around the Forest Industry survive far into the future.” The chamber’s letter also says that while there is currently a proposed program called the BC Rural Dividend initiative, which will provide $25 million per year for three years to small communities around the province for things like workforce and business sector development, that money needs to be better targeted to help areas facing “these historic changes and increased to ensure there is a safety net in place to help the survival of affected communities.” The recommendations made to the government include taking steps to “halt the erosion of the Timber Harvesting Land base by making impacts on the timber harvesting land base area mandatory consideration, in the approval process on any further creation of parks and protected areas or other similar initiatives,” and to ensure there is sufficient funding and consultation with industry stakeholders in place

to complete the cumulative effects work that is currently underway in the province, so a forest harvesting land base can be ensured which will allow the industry and

communities to prosper into the future.” They also recommend there be a transition plan produced for communities effected by damage done by the mountain

pine beetle and that the government continues to work with First Nations on land claims and Rights and Title cases. They would also like to see more incentives

provided to encourage new people to get into the industry, as the cumulative effects of the changing landscape in the forestry industry, the chamber’s letter says,

Tyees bring home gold The Campbell River Peewee AA Tyees came home the champions of a tournament in Vernon last weekend. The team swept the Vernon Invitational tournament with a 5-0 record, defeating some of the top AA Lower Mainland and Interior teams. Game one took place Friday evening against the Tsawwassen Athletics, who are currently first place in the Lower Mainland league standings. It was a highly competitive game and the Tyees were down by two at the top of the fourth inning but managed to catch up after a few innings. Nathan Underhill started on the mound for four strong innings. Joe Frumento made a beautiful diving catch at centre field. Breydan Riecker made multiple outs, including turning a double play at second base. Brandon Lambert came in to close the game on the mound with a very strong performance. Ethan Vaton made two impressive defensive plays at short stop with first baseman, Ryan Deagle being there for some spectacular stretches. Catcher Carter Hall

made some tremendous throws to gun out players stealing bases. Vaton hustled to get on base and eventually scored two of the team’s runs, as did Frumento. The game was a nail biter from start to finish, but in the end the Tyees prevailed with a 5-3 win. Underhill was named game MVP for his solid pitching performance. Saturday mor ning the Tyees faced another strong Lower Mainland team, the North Langley Trappers. Wyatt Murray started on the mound and allowed no runs in the first three innings for an impressive pitching performance. Gage Windle came in as relief and pitched two solid innings and Hall came in to close. The team’s defence was good, including a crucial double play made by centre fielder Cameron Bell. The Tyees took the game 5-3 and Bell earned the game’s MVP honours for his defensive and offensive contributions. Game three versus Salmon Arm happened Saturday afternoon. Vaton was the starting pitcher and was solid, allowing only one run in two complete innings.

Frumento pitched two spectacular innings, allowing no runs and Owen Lagos came in to close in the last inning. The Tyees backed up their pitchers by playing some impeccable defense in what would be an error free game for the team. The Tyees offence was also stellar, with Murray hitting a two run shot well out of the ballpark. Frumento, Vaton, Underhill, Lambert, Windle, Deagle, Bell and Lagos all had big hits as well. The Tyees would mercy the Salmon Arm team with a dominating 16-1 win and Frumento was named game MVP for his pitching and strong at bats. Sunday morning brought the final game of the round robin versus the Cloverdale Spurs. Underhill hit a three-run shot in the first inning to show the opponents that the Tyees came to play. Being on the road though may have begun to wear on the Tyees as they started off the game a little shaky on defence. However, catcher Lambert gunned a player out at second with a perfectly located throw to Riecker. After a couple of innings,

The bats were alive again in the top of the sixth inning and the Tyees managed to score five more runs

with hits from Frumento, Lagos, Lambert, Windle and Hall. The Spurs couldn’t answer and the Campbell River squad won 10-5, making them the only team to be undefeated in the round robin and advancing them to the Finals. Windle got the nod as game MVP for his outstanding pitching performance and key hitting during the game. The Finals match-up took place Sunday afternoon against the Kamloops Riverdogs, who ended the round-robin with a 3-1 record. Murray took the mound to start and ended up pitching a complete game. Hall again gunned run-

Rainbows End FOR

Last weekend I loaded up a few friends into a couple of vehicles and headed back up the road to one of my default “casual” golf courses, Rainbow’s End, just outside Sayward. Upon arrival, I found that my friend Dave did, in fact, bring his seven-monthold son, Archer, along for the trip. He had said he was going to, but I guess I kind of thought he was joking. There were concerned looks amongst the crew about how having a baby stroller would affect the round, but Archer is a well-behaved young man (if I can call him that at seven months) and we knew we’d make the best of it. But we did more than make the best of it, I’d say. You see, I’ve always been an advocate of instilling values by showing rather than telling, and while I’m sure that he didn’t pick up the fact that we were honest in our scorekeeping, respectful of each other by staying quiet while our “opponents” played their shots, and shook hands after the round, thanking each other for being a part of the experience, he will have picked up a few things. He was aware that we were there to have fun. He was aware that we had a genuine affection and appreciation for each other as people, despite the fact that we were technically in a competition. He was aware that we were out in the world playing a game with each other (even if he couldn’t possibly understand the game itself) and enjoying each others’ company. And he was aware that we were happy for him to be a part of it. Being fathers ourselves – well, three of the four of us, anyway (and the third is around kids all the time) – we were more than comfortable passing him around, explaining things to him that he obviously would not understand, and making sure he knew he was in good hands. You see, to me that’s what is important about golf. It’s not about what your scorecard says at the end of the day, or how many golf balls you lost in the trees because you’re really not very good at the game, but about enjoying your time out there with your friends, respecting each other and being happy to be together. And that’s something even a seven-month-old child can pick up, just by example, if you let them.

Pink salmon can be caught off the pier or from shore, as beach fishing is quite common this time of year. I avoid the Sandy pool on the Campbell River as many gather there and cast out flies and lures trying to catch a pink salmon. This time of year you will see cars parked off the highway and some people stop and watch the anglers from the old logging bridge. Pink lures and fly patterns will catch fish but I prefer to use and tie a more natural colour fly in green or even black and I maintain that if the fish are in any lure, it might do the trick but it’s fun to experiment with different lures to see what works and what doesn’t.
