Kimberley native Jared du Toit became a household name across Canada this weekend while competing in his first PGA event at the RBC Canadian Open in Oakville, Ont.

Du Toit finishes top-10 at RBC Canadian Open Charges laid in Kimberley native soars in PGA debut while competing alongside the world’s best golfers TAYLOR ROCC A Sports Editor

Jared du Toit may not have won the 2016 RBC Canadian Open on Sunday afternoon, but he lifted his nation, ignited his hometown of Kimberley and signalled those in the PGA world of what’s to come when he eventually turns pro. The 21-year-old product of the Kimberley Golf Club sent chills down the spines of golf fans across the country this past weekend at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont., as

he ran with world’s best en route to a top-10 finish at the RBC Canadian Open. It was the first PGA Tour appearance of du Toit’s young career, an opportunity afforded him after receiving a tournament exemption from Golf Canada. Entering play with no expectations, everything that followed was nothing short of a fairytale as Canada’s top-ranked men’s amateur swung his way to a score of 9-under — just three strokes back of Venezuela’s Jho-

nattan Vegas, who took the title at 12-under — at the conclusion of the tournament. “If you would have told me a week ago that the week would have went like this, I would have called you a liar and said, ‘In your dreams,’” du Toit said over the phone Monday. “I really did get to live out my dream this week. Hopefully it’s the start of something big.” Oozing energy from start to finish, du Toit drained monstrous putts, knocked down incredible recovery shots,

crushed colossal drives and electrified golf fans everywhere with his upstart, fun-loving yet focused performance. Those in the bleachers off the 18th green greeted him with roaring applause and standing ovations. Fans back home in Kimberley sent their warmest regards and cheered in the bars, restaurants and clubhouses. It’s a story that’s only just begun for one of golf’s brightest rising stars. NOW AT NUTTERS – YOU’RE A SENIOR AT 60!!

The busiest park in Cranbrook needed new washrooms! It was time for the Cranbrook Rotary Club in partnership with the City of Cranbrook and many local suppliers to get that job done. The City’s Public Works crews along with Rotarian member are in the process of building this summer. The washrooms will be available to Cranbrook residents and visitors for festivals, mar-

kets, concerts, picnics and other activities. The new washrooms are 960 square feet of heated space, are wheelchair accessible and will contain change rooms for the kids using the splash park. They will be kept open year round throughout the day and early evening. With your support, walkers, cyclists, seniors, visitors, parents and kids participating in any activities in our downtown core will have access to washrooms.

The Cranbrook Rotary Club is looking for your support to complete this project with the “Donate a Brick” campaign. For a tax-receipted donation of $250.00 your name will be added to a plaque at the washroom site. You can pick up a donation form from the Chamber of Commerce office, Cranbrook City Hall, Maritime Travel or any Cranbrook Rotarian. Be a part of this great community project!

Kimberley Search and Rescue called out twice on weekend FOR THE TOWNSMAN

The Kimberley Search and Rescue teams were called out Thursday night just after 7:00 pm for missing person and again Friday around noon for assistance in the White Swan area. Thursday (July 21) a thirteen-year-old girl was reported missing, the police were called who in turn activated Search and Rescue through Emergency Management BC. The teams were on scene less than two hours when the girl was located. Fifteen volunteer SAR members were involved in the search. On Friday July 22, police initially received a report of two kayakers stranded on the White River in the White Swan area. Kimberley Search and Rescue was activated and requested a helicopter to the remote area. But when the police arrived they learned the subjects had been involved in a vehicle collision on the other side of the river and were seeking help. RCMP transported

Ave to 14th Ave South. That contract had three bidders and is valued at $823,997. Those two projects have already begun and are expected to be completed by the end of September. The same company will also be completing work on a stretch

of road down 6th St. South between 11th Ave to 14th Ave South. There were three tenders received on that contract that is valued at $849,447. The 6th St. project will begin in August and is expected to wrap up by the end of September.

New car show to debut in Kimberley this weekend TRE VOR CR AWLEY

The Motor Mountain Nationals—a new car show set in Kimberley—is kicking off this weekend, as Karen Rempel and Andy Cetinski hope to start a new tradition in the area. The show, which will take over Howard St at the north end of the Platzl, will include a Friday night cruise-in party and a show on Saturday, including a

community dinner and dance at Centennial Hall. Other kinds of entertainment such as live bands will be on tap at the bandstand in the Platzl. Rempel and Cetinski, the duo behind Rocky Mountain Events, are hoping the show will fill the void of the now-defunct Rockin’ in the Rockies car show and grow to something bigger and better. “We were just a little

bit surprised that there wasn’t a big one going on in Cranbrook, Kimberley, Fernie, Creston — this area didn’t have one,” Cetinski said. Added Rempel: “We want to make it the premier destination spot for car shows.” Whether a classic muscle car or a newer sportscar, don’t hesitate to register a vehicle by phoning 250-427-8709 or emailing info@rockymountainevents.ca.

Kimberley Aquatic Centre to re-open in late July C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

The City of Kimberley has issued a press release saying that the Aquatic Centre is on track to re-open in late July after over three months of repairs required due to a catastrophic water failure. Last week, City CAO Scott Sommerville told the Bulletin that there were still a few outstanding issues that had to be dealt with. Those issues are the installation of an improved alarm system that will call out when water is detected, and the modification of the hand-rail on the stairway that will allow for safe exit in a flood emergency. He also said that the City would have a decision to make considering the current labour situation. However, Sommerville confirmed today that the pool will be filled regardless of the labour situation. “Work to replace the electrical

panels and pumps has recently been completed by a flood restoration company, and an engineer was onsite on July 19th to make final recommendations to ensure that the water main will not fail in the future. The insurance adjuster has given their approval to carry out the remaining work, so City staff will make modifications to the restraints and deal with corrosion that led to the initial flood,” the release says. Once the work on the outstanding issues is complete, the pool will be filled, leak-tested and commissioned to meet insurance requirements. The problem began on April 21 when corroded restraints broke and allowed the six inch water man to shift, filling the Electrical/Pump room in the basement of the Kimberley Aquatic Centre to the ceiling within minutes. Damage was estimated at $200,000 by the insurance company.

It’s a doggy dog world

A

n old friend of mine didn’t know the expression ‘It’s a dog eat dog world’. He believed it was ‘A doggy dog world,’ and, as I was prowling about the Community forest the other day, I found that it was. There were more dogs enjoying the ambience than people, and what interesting canines they were. The first spaniel was taking a woman for a walk and, although his coat was shiny and clean from its daily rub in coconut oil, he assured me that he’d much rather have rolled in some healthy horse droppings. He sniffed at himself disdainfully as the woman and I discussed the weather and the shortage of people that morning taking in the scenery, if not the odours. An extremely different dog that morning didn’t hove into sight for a while because he’d apparently misplaced his human and was searching for him. The human and I discussed nonsensical human matters until the dog spotted us and hurried up to see what we were up to. Now, that canine quadruped was a tad short on legs and hastened our way at the speed of an aging tortoise. Meanwhile, the man assured me that he and the dog walked entirely round the lake every day and I reckoned that that walk must have

used up most of the available daylight. As the dog advanced, intent of sniffing the human who was wasting his pet’s time, I moved a small cone aside so that he might continue his Tim Conway doggy walk before dark. My next encounter was with a covey of women and several dogs of diverse sizes. One dog, the size of a VW bug was being tentatively restrained by a woman of smaller dimensions. Feeling sorry for the animal, I asked, “Why is he on a leash?” The woman claimed that she was attempting to stop the animal from bowling me over. I reckoned that he’d like to work me over with his tongue; he looked Peter friendly enough. Warland In fact, all of the dogs that I met that day were remarkably affable; they usually are. The happy mongrel that was working on trapping gofers that day came over to check me out while his human was attempting to fix a broken bicycle chain. The dog seemed to think that a broken bicycle was a relief from him chasing the stupid machine all day when there were better things to do in this life. There was a beautiful huskie-like dog almost with a couple that I ran into later. The fellow, who maybe is called Mike, told

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

me that the dog always has to lead. “Ever since we got that beast,” he told me, “he has always wanted to be ahead. If we turn around and head off in the opposite direction, he’ll out-fox us and we’ll be following him again. Must be some sort of instinct.” “More like innate cussedness,” opined the lady. “He probably gets it from Mike here. Watch!” And she headed off towards the west (I think. You never know in the community forest). We two males trotted off after her, me pushing the bike, and watched the dog re-appear in front, tail waving joyfully. I had no solutions to offer the couple and their doggy-dog problems so, without a canine to lead me, I struggled on to my bike and tried to remember in which direction I was trying to go. Then I ran into Harry and Kate, Kate being a large Golden Retriever of uncertain age. She came over to me in order to check me out. “Is she as dopey as all the others?” I asked Harry. He took an inordinate amount of time to answer that one than said, “I only had to show once that it wasn’t a good idea to run away from me.” I had visions of beatings but Harry assured me, “I learned that trick early with my first shepherd,” he explained. “When she wandered off, I didn’t call her or go after her, I hid. When she finally found me, that was it. Same with dopey Kate here.”

OPINION/EVENTS

Housing ‘crisis’ decades in the making

W

ith a bit of grumbling behind the scenes, our 85 MLAs have trekked back to Victoria this week to deal with an emergency summer legislature sitting. The stated purpose of this brief session is to comply with a demand from Vancouver city council for the ability to impose additional property tax on vacant residential properties. Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, a former NDP MLA who likes to direct provincial affairs when he isn’t issuing instructions to Ottawa on pipeline policy, should be careful what he wishes for. B.C. Finance Minister Mike de Jong was happy to drop this hot potato in his lap, and now Vancouver city hall can try to determine who’s vacationing for a few months and who’s holding an investment property while living somewhere else. When NDP leader John Horgan began calling for a “speculation tax” of 1.5 per cent on “offshore” investments, de Jong cited a Vancouver survey that showed the number of vacant properties in the city was declining, even as prices were climbing rapidly. Horgan argues that Metro Vancouver is in the grip of a housing “bubble” that must be caused by foreign money. “If wages have been stagnant for a decade, which they have, where is the revenue coming from to inflate these prices?” Horgan said last week. “It’s coming from somewhere else. And that’s not sustainable over the long term.” Another point likely to be made repeatedly this week is that the province stopped collecting citizenship and residency data on real estate purchases back in the late

1990s. De Jong changed that this spring and with great fanfare rolled out the first three weeks of sales data from June. They showed that only three per cent of purchases of B.C. residential real estate were from foreign buyers, mostly from China. They were concentrated in Metro Vancouver, and accounted for about five per cent of the total value, which suggests they were for higher-end properties. This was assailed from all sides. Not a big enough sample size, doesn’t prove anything, etc. We have one of those situations I call coffee shop consensus. Everybody “knows” it’s Chinese money pouring into B.C., and that many homes BC VIEWS are being left empty, even if Tom the actual evidence doesn’t Fletcher show that. Seattle has a similar problem with real estate in choice locations, by the way. Down there, the coffee shop consensus seems to be that it’s those darn San Francisco and Silicon Valley grillionaires who are driving up prices beyond the reach of working folks. Blaming foreigners is a great narrative. We saw the same thing with B.C. campgrounds. Utter nonsense, but it has “truthiness,” as U.S. comedian Stephen Colbert says. Truthiness comes from the gut, not the brain. In a recent radio interview with CKNW’s combative talk show host John McComb, de Jong put forward another theory. He mentioned that the aim of hosting Expo 86 and the 2010 Winter Olympics was to put Vancouver on the global map, and it seems to have worked. Whistler has worked as a world destination too, as galling as it may be to those who insist these were all costly failures.

Stephen Colbert records an episode of his U.S. comedy show from Vancouver during the 2010 Olympics, expressing amazement about the lack of igloos in February. Expo 86 and the Olympics were designed to put Vancouver on the world map, and it seems to have worked. The real estate boom has had ripple effects in Victoria and other urban centres, with bidding wars for choice homes. And it’s beginning to reverse a long trend of depopulation from small communities and rural areas, as people are forced to look for something they can afford. And it’s produced an urban building boom, including the rental market. There are worse problems to have.

B.C. imposes foreign buyer tax on Vancouver real estate TOM FLETCHER Black Press

The B.C. government is imposing a new 15 per cent tax on property purchased in Metro Vancouver by non-Canadian citizens or residents. The tax is to take effect Aug. 2, Finance Minister Mike de Jong told the B.C. legislature Monday at a special session called to deal with the spiralling cost of real estate in parts of urban B.C. The tax does not extend to municipalities outside Metro Vancouver, but could be amended to include those later. De Jong said revenue from the tax will go into a new provincial fund to provide rental and social housing. Some revenues from a recent increase in B.C.’s property transfer tax on high-end homes may also be directed to the “housing priority initiatives fund,” which is being started up with $75 million in seed money from the provincial treasury. The new 15 per cent rate on the property

BLACK PRESS

Finance Minister Mike de Jong and Premier Christy Clark take questions on their new foreign buyer tax Monday, standing in front of a new commercial-residential development under construction behind the B.C. legislature. transfer tax will be imposed on purchases by foreign nationals and foreign controlled corporations, intended to discourage investment by non-residents. In the budget in February, de Jong increased the property transfer tax to three per cent on value

of homes more than $2 million, and raised the exemption level to $750,000 for the purchase of new homes, in an effort to encourage new supply. The property transfer tax continues to apply at one per cent on the first $200,000 of resold

homes, and two per cent on value between $200,000 and $2 million. It has produced a windfall of revenues to the province in a hot real estate market in southern urban areas. Premier Christy Clark said there will be more details in the coming

months on how the province will use the new housing fund. She said the 15 per cent foreign buyer tax was chosen after examining similar taxes in Singapore, Hong Kong, London and Sydney. “There is evidence now that suggests that

very wealthy foreign buyers have raised the overall price of housing for British Columbia,” Clark said. “And if we are going to put British Columbians first, and that is what we are intending to do, we need to make sure that we do everything we can to try to keep hous-

ing affordable, and to try and make sure those very wealthy foreign buyers find it a little bit harder to buy a house in the Greater Vancouver area.” NDP leader John Horgan said the province needs to use income tax data to determine whether home buyers are paying tax in Canada, rather than impose rules on foreign nationals. “Much of the investment that’s happening now in the Lower Mainland is being directed by cash from somewhere else, by people who are already here,” Horgan said. NDP housing critic David Eby said a foreign investor could avoid the tax by setting up a Canadian company to buy real estate. The housing legislation introduced Monday also imposes new regulation on the B.C. real estate industry, replacing self-regulation with a new Real Estate Council appointed by the provincial cabinet.

PREPARE YOUR HOME TO PROTECT AGAINST WILDFIRE Owners of homes and properties that are not conscious of the risk, not only pose a threat to their properties, but also threaten neighbours and emergency services personnel. The reality is that if you don’t take basic steps to minimize the wildfire risk around your home or property, emergency services will focus their response on properties they can save -- the rest will have to fend for themselves. There are plenty of public education tools available to provide advice on wildfire preparedness for individuals and homeowners, which can teach how to adapt to living with the threat of wildfire and how to work with your community and your neighbours to prevent loss of life and property in the event of a wildfire. If you have questions about techniques, materials, and procedures, contact Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services, provincial forestry personnel or local landscaping groups.

Runnin’ down a dream

Jared du Toit lifts nation, ignites hometown, signals PGA of immense potential with inspiring performance at RBC Canadian Open TAYLOR ROCC A Sports Editor

It was a beautiful day, the sun beat down. From a small little mountain town in the heart of British Columbia’s southern Interior to the links at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Canadians everywhere felt so good, like anything was possible on Sunday afternoon. And though Jared du Toit may not have won the 2016 RBC Canadian Open, he lifted his nation and ignited his hometown as he put the pedal down and began running down a dream. There’s something good down the road this 21-year-old Kimberley native has embarked upon and while many in the East Kootenay have been privy to his potential for years, all of Canada and everyone in the golf world was awakened to the emerging star that is Jared du Toit after he drove home a top-10 performance and claimed the Gary Cowan medal for the lowest-scoring amateur at his first ever PGA Tour event this past weekend. “If you would have told me a week ago that the week would have went like this, I would have called you a liar and said, ‘In your dreams,’” du Toit said over the phone Monday morning, while enjoying a well-deserved day of rest. “I really did get to live out my dream this week. Hopefully it’s the start of something big. “This week really motivates me. I still don’t think it’s settled in,

but it was cool to see that me playing my best golf is not far off the best in the world, being able to compete with some of the best guys in the world. “That was really cool to see and it’s big for my confidence. Getting my first taste of the [PGA] Tour life and obviously the Canadian Open being my first one is a bit of an exception.” From start to finish, the Arizona State University Sun Devil held his own and pushed a field of quality PGA Tour professionals this past week at the RBC Canadian Open. Though he didn’t quite have enough in him to finish the weekend atop the leaderboard, du Toit proved he belongs with the world’s best, firing a 9-under 279 over the 72-hole tournament to finish in a tie for ninth, three strokes back of 31-year-old Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas, who claimed the crown with a tournament-best 12-under. Sitting one stroke off the lead heading into the final round, du Toit found himself paired alongside PGA pro Brandt Snedeker — the world’s No. 21-ranked golfer — in the final group of the day. While the amateur du Toit wasn’t eligible for the more than $1-million prize awaiting the tournament winner, Snedeker was. With that kind of money on the line, you’d expect the fiercest competitor to emerge with teeth bared and while Snedeker certainly did put on a per-

He kept it light when he saw me getting too tense and tried to focus me

up, fire me up when he thought so. “He was rooting for me. It was unbelievable. It speaks about his character. He’s an unbelievable guy. The guy is playing for a million dollars out there and he took the time to make me feel like I was the big deal out there. He showed me the ropes. Just the classiest guy.” Snedeker finished the tournament in a tie for fifth at 10-under, one stroke ahead of du Toit. Whether it Snedeker’s pointers, the

packed clubhouse at Kimberley Golf Club or the roar of the crowd behind the 18th green at Glen Abbey, du Toit was blown away by the immense support he received throughout the tournament. With a self-imposed social media ban in full effect — and supported by Derek Ingram, his Team Canada coach — du Toit really didn’t get the full effect of the outpouring until after everything was said and done. Monday morning, he was still scrolling

through Facebook and Twitter, taking in everything that had been directed his way, including a congratulatory video put together by those at Kimberley Golf Club (KGC). “Congratulations, Jared. What an awesome ride,” said Don McCormick, Mayor of the City of Kimberley, in the KGC video. “It’s impressive how you’ve handled the pressure. You are a great ambassador for the community.” Not only were friends and family back home

cheering on the pride of their little mountain town, golf fans in attendance at Glen Abbey were doing just the same. During the third round Saturday afternoon, du Toit sparked an explosive roar from those off the 18th green as he drained a monstrous 40-foot eagle putt to vault himself into the final pairing with Snedeker on Sunday.

Du Toit delivers at RBC Canadian Open CONTINUED from page 13 What followed was a celebration seen around the country, as du Toit throttled a passionate fist pump before embracing his caddy Sean Burke. Taking his final stroll down the 18th fairway and sitting at 8-under without a chance to catch Vegas on Sunday, du Toit approached to a standing ovation from the red-and-white clad crowd. He signed autographs. He slapped high fives. He tipped his hat and he bowed his head. Above all, he soaked it all in and he loved every minute of it. “I tried not to think about it too much while playing,” du Toit said. “But after, checking Facebook [Monday] morning, I saw the Kimberley Golf Club put up the little video… I got a little emotional watching it. It’s just crazy all the support I got and that I’ve received over the years. To now be where I am and obviously to have had the week that I had, I just look back and it seems surreal right now. I’m very honoured and humbled to come from a small town and a place like Kimberley.” While Canada’s topranked men’s amateur battled admirably

against the competition on the course all week long, it would be remiss not to mention that bronchitis was waging its own war on the Kimberley kid, both on and off the fairways. Saturday night, du Toit made a trip to a local hospital in order to get treatment, keeping him there until nearly midnight local time. He may not have gotten the best night’s sleep he had hoped for, but there was no way du Toit was going to let a little bronchitis keep him from playing the biggest round of his life. “I’m living my dream right now and I’m not going to let a little cold slow anything down,” du Toit said. “Everything worked out. I got some treatment and honestly it was kind of a blessing in disguise, a little bit. The bronchitis took my mind off what was going on maybe. It made it a little easier for me and took the pressure off a little bit.” Du Toit fired a 1-under round of 71 on the final day, good enough to keep himself in the top-10, but not enough to track down the world’s best as they made the most of scoring opportunities on the

final day of competition. Still, all things considered, there’s no way anyone was disappointed with what the Sun Devil’s phenom did over the course of the week. “Jared’s been playing great, he’s been trending really well for the past six months,” Ingram told Canadian Press. “He’s been playing great, a bit of a surprise to be in the final group of the Canadian Open as an amateur, but not surprised that he played well at all.” Du Toit enjoyed a much-deserved rest day on Monday, but will get right back to swinging the sticks as he heads to Niagara Falls Country Club in Lewiston, N.Y., for the Porter Cup. Firstround action is slated to get underway Wednesday morning. A big part of his Monday was spent going through text messages, social media posts and the parade-length support sent his way from across the country. “I just want to thank everyone involved and anyone that’s ever helped me growing up,” du Toit said. “Obviously in a small town, it magnifies the people involved in your life. You really get a big sense of community and I just want to thank everybody

He was also attempting to do something last accomplished on the PGA Tour by Phil Mickelson in 1991 — win a tour event as an amateur. While du Toit was the top amateur and Canadian at the tournament, fellow Canuck Adam

Hadwin was presented with the Rivermead Cup for low professional Canadian after finishing in a tie for 49th at 1-under. “Little awkward holding this with Jared playing so well this week,” Hadwin said during the awards ceremony. “Y’know, he beat me by eight [strokes]. Not sure I should be holding this, but I’ll accept it.” The summer of 2016 has been nothing short of incredible for the former Selkirk Secondary

School student. Prior to his outstanding outing at the RBC Canadian Open, he marked down a third-place finish at the Monroe Invitational in Pittsford, N.Y., before gathering up a victory at the Glencoe Invitational in Calgary. Du Toit’s first year of play with the ASU Sun Devils was also a smashing success, as he secured a top-five finish at the NCAA New Mexico Regional Championship, along with four

other top-10 finishes throughout the season. There’s something good waiting down this road, as Tom Petty sang, and this country just witnessed Jared du Toit embark upon. Let’s all just sit back and enjoy as we watch the pride of Kimberley run down his dream. If there’s one thing that can be said, there isn’t much mystery as to where that road will lead — Jared du Toit is headed for PGA stardom.

Ice defenceman named to NHL Futures List Cale Fleury featured on NHL Central Scouting’s Futures List heading into 2016-17 Western Hockey League season TAYLOR ROCC A Sports Editor

TAYLOR ROCCA PHOTO

Ice defenceman Cale Fleury, pictured during 2015-16, has been named to NHL Central Scouting’s Futures List ahead of the 2016-17 WHL campaign.

NHL scouts will once again be flocking to Cranbrook to watch a budding Kootenay Ice star this coming season. The NHL Central Scouting Service unveiled its Futures List for North American and international prospects for the 2017 NHL ENtry Draft this past weekend, with defenceman Cale Fleury finding a place amongst those to watch this WHL season. “The 2016 draft class lived up to all the hype regarding the exceptional talent available and the unpredictability of the order in which prospects would be taken,” Dan Marr, NHL director of Central Scouting, told NHL.

com. “It’s anticipated that 2016-17 will again be a deep class for prospects and there is lots of depth at all positions.” Fleury, 17, emerged in 2015-16 as a dominant force on the Kootenay Ice blue line, setting career highs in all major statistical categories, including goals (eight), assists (17) and points (25). On top of his prowess as an offensive catalyst from the backend, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound rearguard proved himself tough-as-nails and nightmarish for opposing forwards, adding a physical element to his game that left little for the opposition to work with down in Kootenay country. Central Scouting’s Futures List consists of 148 North American

players and 142 international skaters NHL scouts expect to watch closely in 2016-17. In September, Central Scouting will release an updated preliminary list with more detailed player rankings. “The [Futures] list is based on evaluations we made of the players during the 2015-16 season,” Marr said. “A number of these players will be changing teams for 2016-17 and that will be reflected in our preliminary players to watch list in September.” Other notable WHL players finding a place on the Futures List include, but are not limited to: Nolan Patrick (Brandon Wheat Kings), Callan Foote (Kelowna Rockets) and Stuart Skinner (Lethbridge

Hurricanes). Forward Klim Kostin, the top pick of the Ice at the 2016 CHL Import Draft, also lands on the list, though it remains uncertain as to whether or not he will land in Cranbrook or remain in Russia. Fleury’s older brother Haydn was a 2014 first-round pick (seventh overall) of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes and just completed his fourth season with the WHL’s Red Deer Rebels. In 131 career WHL games, Fleury has registered nine goals and 38 points, while amassing 53 penalty minutes. He added one assist during a seven-game first round playoff loss to the Calgary Hitmen in 2015.

Starbucks chain relaxes employee dress code LINDA NGUYEN Canadian Press

TORONTO - Got purple hair? Starbucks wants to hire you. The world’s largest coffee chain is loosening its employee dress code to allow workers to don brightly-dyed hair and coloured, patterned clothing. Starbucks says employees now have more fashion choices to wear underneath the company’s signature green apron - within reason. The revamped company attire rules now includes grey, navy, dark denim and brown tops along with shirts with small stripes, tone-ontone plaids and tight patterns. Employees can also wear pants, shorts, skirts or dresses in grey, navy, brown, khaki and black, as well as darkwashed blue jeans. Along with vibrant-coloured hair, staffers are likewise permitted to put on knitted beanies, fedoras and other suitable hats in brown, grey or black. Scarves, neckties and colourful socks have also been given the OK. The coffee company says the move is an opportunity for their employees to display their individuality while at work. “The green apron remains core and common and is our brand,” said Sara Presutto, vice-president of partner resources at Starbucks Canada. “But what we want is for our partners to have more individuality behind the apron so we’re broadening how they can express themselves.” The previous dress code required workers to wear solid-black or white shirts, khaki or solid-black bottoms, shorts or skirts. Only hats with a Starbucks logo were al-

lowed. The change is immediately in effect on Monday at all locations in the U.S. and at its 1,300 locations in Canada - the latter of which employs approximately 20,000 workers. Presutto said Starbucks employees can also have up to two piercings per ear and a small nose stud. Other jewelry will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis due to food-safety requirements. Although the rules have been scaled back, Presutto noted that customers shouldn’t expect their local barista to soon be wearing ripped jeans, dirty clothes or mid-riff tops. She said the same standard of professionalism will still apply. This is the second time Starbucks has revised its dress-code policy since it came to Canada in 1987. In 2014, it allowed workers to display tasteful tattoos that did not contain vulgar language or messages that were not on the face or neck, and permitted untucked shirts, shorts and skirts. Starbucks isn’t the only company to revise its dress-code guidelines to reflect the changing times. In March, Earls restaurant chain amended its dress code, permitting servers to wear pants instead of skirts. Its previous policy allowed female workers to wear black pants only “on request.” In 2014, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. employees in the U.S. allowed khaki and black denim pants instead of black dress pants, with warehouse and garden centre workers given the green light to wear T-shirts and blue jeans.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You often respond to your inner voice, which takes you into new and sometimes unpredictable situations. You could surprise yourself with your choices, and others are likely to be reactive. Remember that for every action, there is a reaction. Tonight: Treat yourself! TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You might decide to be more active. You will get a great response from others as a result. Follow what you feel is the best path, and you will be OK with the results. A friend or loved one could be reactive. Know that this, too, will pass. Tonight: Do what you have been putting off. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Listen to your inner voice with a particular issue that arises. This matter could involve a friend, and/or might emerge during a meeting, which is likely to catch you off guard. A conversation will help you decide what to do, if anything. Take your time. Tonight: Take off.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Focus on the long term and walk away from instability, especially if it does not benefit you directly. You will be a lot happier if you do. Continue to focus on your priorities, which could involve several meetings and discussions. Tonight: Find your friends. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Be willing to move in a new direction. Others might ask you for something that you refuse to give. A discussion will help, but in general, people seem to be in an either/or type of mood. You’ll gain an unexpected insight that allows you to head in a new direction. Tonight: Up late. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Your fine-tuned ability to detach will take you far right now. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My wife and I met this new couple at a function, and they seemed really nice, so we exchanged information in hopes of meeting up again. We like meeting new couples and thought we’d see whether we have more in common. We have hung out with them a handful of times now but don’t see any connection or really have much in common. They are always bringing up politics and their strong beliefs in a particular party, followed by negative comments about what the state of our country would be if the other party were to win the presidential election and all the doom and gloom we would be in for. My husband and I have never been very political and don’t find much interest in discussing it. We have a decently fun time with them, but my wife and I often talk about what else we could’ve done that evening or that day. The woman of the other couple texts my wife almost every Friday now to invite us out. We’ve said no a few times, but now we don’t wish to meet up with them anymore because these political conversations are such a drag. It feels as if we are trying to break up with this couple but they don’t know it yet. We don’t know what to do. -- Politics-Free Household Dear Politics-Free: Although these days it seems to be more of a faux pas to discuss “Game of Thrones” spoilers at the dinner table than politics and religion, there’s a reason that those loaded topics have traditionally been off-limits. They’re deeply personal, and talking about them tends to create hostile territory where friendship might have grown. Politely tell the couple you respect that they are passionate about their beliefs but you don’t feel comfortable talking politics. If they can’t respect that, move on to new friends. You’re under no obligation to spend time with this couple. After all, “doomed” or not, it’s still a free country. Dear Annie: I just want to get married. I’ve been dating my boyfriend for three years, but he hasn’t warmed up to the idea of marriage. He says things like, “It’s just a piece of paper. And besides, half of marriages end in divorce.” I was ecstatic when he recently expressed interest in moving in together. I think he sees this as the next step in determining whether we’re compatible before perhaps popping the question. The only thing standing in the way right now is the fact that my parents disapprove. I care about their opinion, of course, but it is my life and a decision I’ve made carefully. My mom has kind of gotten over it, but my dad refuses to acknowledge it and doesn’t seem to care about how we’re doing as a couple. All he cares about is how I am doing and how my job is. He also disapproves of my boyfriend’s unemployment. It really makes my boyfriend uncomfortable, especially because those two have never really gotten along. What can I do to make my dad see that this man is my future husband? -Shacking Up Dear Shacking: Reverse the U-Haul. Not because Dad disapproves but because moving in together wouldn’t change your boyfriend’s mind if he’s already said he’s indifferent about marriage. In fact, he’d have even less reason to take the next step. Stay in your own places until the two of you make solid plans for your future. This will put the situation in the pressure cooker a bit, which it needs. Maybe he’s your future husband. Maybe not. All the better to find out sooner rather than later. Roaming toddler reunited with parents in Toronto LIAM C ASEY Canadian Press

TORONTO - A toddler who walked out of her family’s Toronto home in the middle of the night has been reunited with her parents after spending a few hours watching cartoons at a police station. Police said the threeyear-old girl got dressed, put on her rain boots, unlocked the door and walked to a nearby grocery store while her parents slept Monday morning. “Thankfully, this was a happy ending,” said Toronto police Const. Craig Brister. “She was spoiled at the station and was in good spirits.” Police received a call from staff at a Sobeys grocery store in downtown Toronto around 2:30 a.m. Monday and spotted the child wandering around the parking lot, Brister said. He said they brought the girl to a nearby police station where she watched cartoons and

ate a snack. Officers reviewed security camera footage to see if she was with anyone, but said she appeared to be on her own. Police then canvassed the neighbourhood looking for her caretakers, but didn’t find them, he said. Her parents woke up a few hours later and realized their daughter was missing and immediately reported her missing, Brister said. Soon the girl was back with her parents. He said charges won’t be laid, but cautioned parents of young children to child-proof their doors. “It’s a tough nut to crack and you got to be aware and when they’re not in a crib, you almost have to sleep with one eye open,” Brister said. “The big thing is just being diligent, but it’s tough because you can’t watch them 24 hours a day.”

Former minister finishes treatment for alcohol addiction KRIST Y KIRKUP Canadian Press

OTTAWA - Former cabinet minister and Liberal MP Hunter Tootoo has completed his treatment for alcohol addiction, his office said in a statement Monday. Tootoo, who left the Liberal caucus two months ago, has scheduled a news conference and open house Wednesday at his constituency office in Iqaluit. “After completing my treatment for alcohol addiction, I wish to invite my constituents to an open house where I will be available to address their concerns as I resume my duties as their member of Parliament,” the statement said. Tootoo has remained out of the public eye since he abruptly resigned as fisheries minister at the end of May to seek treatment for a drinking problem. At the time, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tootoo left the Liberal cabinet and caucus of his own accord amid a

“very difficult situation,” but he would not elaborate on details of what happened. On Monday, officials in the Prime Minister’s Office declined to comment on Tootoo’s anticipated return to work. Alcohol has long impacted the lives of members of Tootoo’s family, who are well known in Nunavut. Terence Tootoo, a rising hockey star, was 22 when he died by suicide in Brandon, Man., 14 years ago in the wake of a drunk driving incident. His brother, 33-year-old NHL forward Jordin Tootoo, also wrote about his battle with alcohol, including a visit to rehab, in his 2014 book, “All The Way: My Life On Ice.” Government House leader Dominic LeBlanc, who assumed Tootoo’s responsibilities on the fisheries file, has since juggled both roles, prompting speculation about the need for cabinet changes due to the size of the portfolios.

Never naming names, Clinton slams Trump’s foreign policy LISA LERER Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Hillary Clinton offered a scathing critique of Donald Trump’s foreign policy on Monday, casting her Republican presidential rival as disrespectful of America’s role in the world and too reckless to serve as the country’s commander in chief. While avoiding any direct mention of Trump’s name, Clinton slammed many of his recent statements about the military and international affairs, vowing to stand by longtime allies, fight repressive regimes and carefully weigh the advice of military officials. “You will never hear me say, ‘I only listen to myself on national security,”’ she told veterans gathered for the annual convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. While Clinton has spent much of her campaign highlighting her international experi-

ence, some polls show active duty troops backing Trump over Clinton by more than a 2-to-1 margin. The former secretary of state appeared to attribute some of that support to her gender, noting that her role as the first female presidential nominee of a major political party “takes a little getting used to even for me.” She added: “I want you to know I will get up every single day in the White House doing everything I possibly can to protect our country.” The statement was an unusual acknowledgement by Clinton that there may be some voters, particularly within the military, who have a problem with the notion of a female commander-in-chief. Hoping to assuage

some of those concerns, Clinton’s campaign has highlighted former military officials who’ve endorsed her in recent weeks. That includes retired Gen. John Allen, a former deputy commander of U.S. Central Command, who endorsed Clinton on Monday. “I have stayed out of the political arena my entire adult life, but given the complexities of issues facing our country today and its longtime allies, I felt compelled to speak up and be heard,” said Allen in a statement circulated by Clinton’s campaign. “I have no doubt that she is the leader we need at this time to keep our country safe.”

The BC SPCA is the only animal welfare organization with the mandate and authority to respond to complaints of animal cruelty in BC. Our special constables work closely with pet guardians to provide information and guidance on the humane and responsible treatment of animals, and, thankfully, most of the complaints we receive are resolved through education and support. However, if individuals do not take steps to immediately relieve the distress of their animals, our special provincial constables execute warrants to remove animals from dangerous or neglectful situations and prepare reports for Crown Counsel recommending formal charges of animal cruelty. All of our cruelty investigations coasts are paid through the generosity of our donors.

The creation of our provincial call centre and animal abuse hotline in March 2013 has led to a signicant increase in individuals reporting cases of suspected animal cruelty and neglect across the province. To report animal cruelty please call the hotline at 1-855-622-7722.

10 Minutes to Disaster!

Dogs (and cats) cool themselves by panting and by releasing heat through their paws. On summer days the air and upholstery in your vehicle can heat up to high temperatures that make it impossible for pets to cool themselves. The risk is real! If it is 26C outside, inside a car, even with the windows cracked, the temperature can reach 37C in 10 minutes and 43C in 20 minutes. If your dog’s temperature reaches 41C cell and organ damage begins to occur. Please leave your animals at home when running out to do errands. If you do spot a dog or any animal in a car on a hot day please call the BCSPCA hotline at 1-855-622-7722 or the local RCMP immediately.

SPEAR GRASS: a Summer Danger For Your Pet

Proud to Support our Local SPCA

When Spear grass dries out, it’s very sharp and pointy seeds are easily knocked off. These seeds can attach to your pet and bury into their skin or deep into ear canals where they could potentially rupture the ear drum. Also, check between toes, groin and armpit areas as they can bury into dog’s skin and, over time, become infected. If your pet is excessively shaking its head, scratching or sneezing, please take them to a veterinarian for examination.
