RIMBEY REVIEW 3
Rimbey debuts new parade float BY AMELIA NAISMITH The community of Rimbey can proudly celebrate a collaboration success story with the completion of a newly designed parade float; created to highlight and advertise what Rimbey has to offer residents and visitors alike. “We just decided we wanted something that would show off what Rimbey has to offer,” said Rimbey Chamber of Commerce past-president Jackie Stratton. In the past the community had used a sandwich board and an antique truck to do the trick but decided it was time to take it to the next level. “I don’t think we’ve ever had a float as long as I’ve been here,” said Stratton. “We want people to know, especially in these tough times, Rimbey is open and we’ve got lots to do and lots to see,” she added. “It’s promoting us and we need to promote us, nobody else will.” The Town of Rimbey contributed $700 and the chamber provided matching funds, but Stratton says if it were not for all the time,
expertise, labor and materials donated by community members the float would not have seen fruition. “The ones that were asked really stepped up,” said Stratton. “There’s thousands of dollars.” Everything from printing to gathering supplies, welding to hours upon hours of pom-pom fluffing was donated to get the creation parade-ready. This year the Rimbey float will have participated in four parades; Ponoka, Rimbey, Westerner Days and Bentley. Each parade takes approximately two hours of set up preparation. “Those early morning parades are really early,” said Stratton. “It’s a sacrifice to do it, people need to know that,” she added. Community contributors to the Rimbey Float project include: Rimbey Builders Supply – donations for construction Nikirk Bros – donations for construction Lazer Energy – donations for construction Front Line Compression – fabrication assistance Wolseley – donations for construction
Carrie Korpinski - Apex Landscaping – assistance prepping decorations Sydney Stratton – works at Empress Coffee Shop – assistance prepping decorations Town of Rimbey - monetary Rimbey and District Chamber of Commerce (70 members strong) - monetary Behren Signs – printing float panels Parkland Automotive – fabrication of float Mackenzie Stratton – designing float panels Scratchin’ the Surface – float design and prep of decorations, coordinating parades Legacy Ford – truck to pull float (Rimbey, Ponoka) Paskapoo Park (driver Larry Varty) – 1980 Kenworth pick-up to pull the float (Red Deer, Bentley) Volunteers/Ambassadors at the parades: Mayor Rick Pankiw and wife Sue Pankiw, Taylor Pankiw, Ilya Durmanov (ATB and Chamber Board Member), Alana Wright (MNP and Chamber Board Member), Journey Giesbrecht, Melvin Durand, Larry Varty, Jackie Stratton, Mackenzie Stratton, Sydney Stratton

Jonah Kondro Hobbes and I decided that we needed to check out Japan. Visiting our longtime friend Levi was a good excuse to set everything aside and occupy a country where being white is a visual minority. When I stepped off the plane in Tokyo, I knew I was going to be an oddity. I’ve spent four days already

we were young and used to inherit stuff from her. Well, I said nothing, but to my knowledge, half hour jobs do not exist. But, due to perseverance and many unprintable words on my husband’s part, the thing finally did fly again and all was good. And now here we are on a summer’s night with only a 60 per cent chance of rain and we are about to have a party. I have it all planned. Well, I don’t actually. But, it was a day in summer and I was sitting outside, in the back behind my office, letting the sun seep into my very soul, when I decided tonight was the night for a party. So I sent out invitations to all my friends who are contacts on my phone before my phone finally died from so much activity. And, guess what? Surprise!
They are all coming! And once again, I’m excited. Here it is summer and we have this red umbrella that promises to shield us all from sun and rain, whatever happens (according to the radio, it will mostly likely be rain). And we have flowers and there will be food and there will be music. But, mostly there will be friends. And, really, in the long run, that is what is most important, anyway. For me, for you and for all of us. And in summer, the definition of perfection might not be hanging out with friends on a wooden deck where flowers, in all their glory, are showing their lovely faces, and the night is soft and warm like velvet around us, but it’s very close. It’s magic, really!
on a foreign continent. I haven’t encountered anyone else with neck tattoos and cowboy boots. However, I have seen two people with noticeable tattoos: one Japanese gentleman (I saw in the Ueno area) had a single sleeve of tattoos; the other person was a Japanese girl living in the same building as Levi. Tattoos or irezumi are still heavily associated with the Japanese underworld, with miscreants, with the yakuza. I look like a North American super villain. I am writing this column from Levi’s dorm room. His room or, as we have been jokingly calling it, his dojo is a four story share residence in Nishi-Funabashi on the outskirts of Tokyo. I discovered that these share residences or share homes are not that common in this country. Places that are uncommon tend to attract
uncommon people—people like my group of friends. The building Levi is living in operates like a quasi-hostel, but this place is cleaner, everyone has their own room, and everyone wears slippers. Hobbes and I have been sleeping sprawled out on Levi’s bamboo laminate floor. Levi is a white guy and has been working in Japan as a geologist since January. He received his Master’s Degree from the University of Alberta last winter and got on board with a one year program to work abroad. Levi works in an office; and from what I understand, he basically builds maps and attempts to figure out how oil and gas are interacting in a reservoir. My friend Hobbes and I had to sell our souls to afford to visit our friend. At the moment we are all taking a break from one another to enjoy a quiet
moment to ourselves. Levi had to cycle to the office for a meeting and discussion. (He has been trying to assemble some of his research from Argentina into a presentation). I just stepped into the kitchen for another cup of coffee; I heard Hobbes playing some New Orleans tune on the piano in the share home’s ‘theater room.’ I’ll admit that writing this column is difficult. If it wasn’t for the air conditioning in Levi’s room, I’d be dead from the heat and humidity in this country. It also doesn’t help that I’m in a perpetual sake hangover, with a heavy dose of jet lag. All personal aliments aside, the language barrier is pretty dense. I don’t speak Japanese, nor do I understand any of the Kanji symbols. Thankfully there is a lot of Romanji on signs and such: Romanji is
basically Japanese spelled out in letters I understand. Speaking and receiving Japanese hasn’t been easy. I know some very basic phrases. I have a difficult time thinking and then articulating Japanese. When I think of something to say in English, I can ‘hear’ my voice in my head saying the words; then I say the phrase in English—it’s easy. When I think of something to say in Japanese, I hear Levi’s voice saying the words in my head, and it comes out of my larynx all garbled. Being immersed in a foreign language has been an interesting experience. I did my best, one night, to describe Hawaiian pizza in English to a handful of Japanese girls who live in the share residence. It didn’t help that both parties had enough sake to dissolve two separate languages into a hot mess of words.
A glimpse behind the military curtain

huge, fire engine red umbrella that promised not only to shield people from the sun and rain, it was guaranteed to make the deck look all uptown and spiffy like, maybe, we were rich or something. I sat it up carefully, proudly. And there it floated; all majestic and amazing for about two and a half seconds, before a huge gust of wind caught it, sending it sailing over the railing like a somewhat inebriated Mary Poppins. As the great Scottish poet Robbie Burns so aptly said, ‘the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry. I cried, but briefly, because I had to go to work and, anyway, stuff happens. My husband said it would probably only take an half hour or so and he could fix it, using parts of the old frayed umbrella that we had inherited from his mother when

summer. In celebration of the season, and with a little help from my friends, I transformed my winter white deck into a flower-coated wonder. When we were finished, tons of flowers peeked out here, there and everywhere, almost hiding the less than attractive chipped white paint. I planted scarlet geraniums because I love them and petunias, pansies and some other little yellow sunshiny things because I knew I could grow to love them, also. I planted strawberry plants and a whole lot of herbs, vowing to learn which dishes the herbs should be used in, instead of simply throwing handfuls into everything I cooked and hoping for the best like I did last year. I scrubbed the barbecue shiny clean. I fed the birds. Lastly, I bought this great,
It goes without saying no one in their right mind can expect a career in the military — including the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves — to be the most fun, easiest, enjoyable, and low stress job there is. But the other day I overheard an acquaintance of
mine, who for the purpose of this piece will remain unnamed, say being in the military is like being in an abusive relationship, “you know you should get out but you can’t.” Now I’m not saying this acquaintance of mine doesn’t enjoy their career, in fact they love it. They’re good at it, progressing through the ranks and plan on making the move to Regular Forces in the future; despite the fact it takes them from their fiancé for long periods of time and the wear-and-tear is already showing on their young, early-20s body. This opinion column isn’t to criticize the Canadian Forces or devalue immeasurable efforts and complicated passions and lives of our men and woman who serve. Nor do I claim have a deep understanding of military
protocol and am not offering solutions to situations I cannot comprehend. Life is complicated; nothing is black and white. You can love something and hate it at the same time with a million other emotions coursing in between all at the same time. Not every day is a good day and people can’t like their jobs all the time. My acquaintance’s words stuck with me and I decided to small amount of digging to see what life in the military is really like through candid opinions. When a person admits they are in an abusive relationship they are encouraged to get out. When an office administrative personnel says they truly hate their job they would probably be encouraged to quit and find something they like better. Can you respond to a member of the military in the same fashion? They knew they were
entering a life more extreme than the average citizen would ever understand. The Next Edition, a Toronto based digital media publishing company — among other things — interviewed two Canadian Forces medical personnel to get their thoughts. Both spoke of the bonds and family forged through service and memorable life experiences they’ve had. They also talked about being away from home for long periods of time and never, ever getting enough sleep, and training in horrible conditions. However, both also emphasized how serving in the military is not simply their job, it is their identity. In 2014 Canadian Forces signals operator W.O. Russell Storring shared his story with CBC News Canada about life in the military post-Afghanistan, and he a darker outlook. He touched on the numbers
of Canadian who died serving in Afghanistan but says it is nothing compared to the military suicides Canada sees once its men and woman come home. Storring says budget cuts also had a great impact and in his last few years had gotten used to eating field rations already expired by a number of years. After 22 years of service Storring decided he wanted out. He felt more like a number than a serving soldier and was further ostracized professionally for that decision. Contrary to all the love one can have for what the Canadian Armed Forces gives Canada, and to all the love my acquaintance has for what it offers them personally, there is just something deeply sad about the words they spoke in a moment of unabashed honesty.

Gull Lake Pro-Am tournament exceeds expectations BY TREENA MIELKE Despite the rain that fell on the weekend of July 15 and 16, the annual Junior Golf Foundation of Gull Lake Pro-Am tournament was a huge success. Eamon McCann, who owns the golf course with his wife, Carla said $16,400 was raised through the silent and live auctions held July 15. “We were hoping for around $15,000 so that was even better. It was unbelievable,” he said. Bidding was brisk at the silent auction and a painting of the Gull Lake golf course by local artist, Kaylee Motley brought in $850, and a book by hockey great Bobby Orr, raised $800. Each professional golfer was also auctioned off as part of the pro am game held Saturday. Professionals attending the event included Sandra Palmer, Sam Randolf, Adrienne White, Laura Witvoet, Brandon Regnier, Dirk Ayers, Paul Devenport and Shelby Chrest. “All the pros had a great time and are already talking about next year,” said McCann.

For golf pro Randon Regnier, the annual Junior Golf Foundation of Gull Lake’s Pro-Am tourney is somewhat like a homecoming. “It’s awesome,” said 29-year-old Regnier. “It’s where I started golfing. And I went through the junior golf program.” The amiable young golf pro said he had aspirations to work at the Gull Lake golf course before he was actually old enough to drive the equipment. In those days, being too young to work, he spent many hours on the golf course, simply learning the game. “My dad used to drop me off and I just golfed all day, every day. I loved it.” Regnier started in the work force as a golf professional at the Wolf Creek Golf Resort and the Derrick Golf & Winter Club. In 2011, he made the move to Whitecourt to become the GM/Head Professional at the Whitecourt Golf & Country Club. Golf pro Sam Randolph from Ft. Worth, Texas has been coming to the Gull Lake Pro Am for eight years. “I like doing this type of event,” he said. “It’s like coming back to see family. It’s a good program.” Randolf, who lives in Fort Worth, Texas learned the game of golf from his father, Sam Randolph Sr., who was the head professional at La Cumbre Country Club for 38 years. In 1981 he won the Junior World Cup and in 1985 he won the U.S. Amateur. He also won the California State Amateur, the Haskins Award and was low amateur at The Masters in 1985. In 1986, he was the low amateur at both The Masters and the U.S. Open. He turned pro and joined the PGA Tour in 1986.

Palmer, who has had a long and exciting golf career said she loves everything about the game. “The beauty of it, the competition and the travel. It took me places I would have never gone to,” she said. Palmer has won 30 professional golf tournaments worldwide, including 21 LPGA tour events. Her most notable wins were the U.S. Women’s Open, the Colgate Dinah Shore and the Titleholders Championship. She was inducted into the Texas state Golf Hall of Fame in 1985 and three years later she was inducted into the National Collegiate Hall of Fame.

This fall, after receiving golf and academic scholarships, she will be going to Barton College in Wilson, North Carolina where she will take business administration, majoring in sports management. “I love golf and this program is awesome,” she said. An up and coming golfer, McMahon has won the Maple Leaf junior golf tournament in Banff and Red Deer. Friday night, she bought the right to caddy for golf pro Brandon Regnier at Saturday’s pro am game. She said it was money well spent as it all goes back into the golf foundation. “It goes full circle.” Sam Randolph, Jr., caddied, worked and learned to play golf at La Cumbre Country Club in Santa Barbara, California, where his father, Sam Randolph, Sr., was the Head Golf Professional for 38 years. Sam qualified for the PGA Tour on his first try in the fall of 1986. He won the Bank of Boston Classic in 1987, his rookie season. Sam played the PGA Tour from 1987- 1992 and then played the Web.com Tour from 1993- 2002 with several runner-up finishes. He became a Member of the PGA of America in 1991 and has become a real student of the game over the years. Understanding how human bio mechanics and the laws of physics apply to golf is the direction we are going.

Solar powered livestock watering provides benefits BY AMELIA NAISMITH Rather than only keeping with traditional direct pasture water systems for live-

Environmental issues with direct watering includes loss of water storage in dugouts and streams, damage to banks, rapid growth of weeds and algae, deterioration of water quality, and loss of riparian areas, vegetation, root systems and pastureland. One such solar-powered system was developed by Kelln Solar; Kelln Solar distributor Randy Robb says the systems are customizable for farmers’ different needs, providing benefits beyond environmental care and herd health. a pump located in either the well or dugout. A float switch in the stock tank — which also has customizable features including water level detection and an alert time delay—measures the water levels and relays to the system when the tank needs more water. Any time the water gets too low, if there is something wrong with the system or the pump turns on a cellular alert is sent to the farmer either by call or text. The feature is a time saver, especially for those who pasture cattle away from their residence. The lines of communication are two-way and operators are able to have control over their system via cell phone. “You can just text it and say ‘start my pump’,” said Kelln Solar representative Andy Robb. “It depends on how much information you want out of it,” added Randy.

The cell system becomes a challenge for those living in more remote areas without reliable cell service. Randy says at that point farmers may have to look at satellite systems, which are more expensive. With the cost of solar power panels decreasing Randy encourages farmers investing in solar power to oversize their systems to catch optimal solar energy. Funding is available through the Growing Forward 2 On-Farm Stewardship Program. “It covers 50 per cent of your cost of year-round or summer watering systems (up to $30,000),” said Kim Barkwell, sustainable agriculture program manager for the counties of Wetaskiwin and Leduc. “You need to have your environmental farm plan,” she added. The On-Farm Stewardship Program funding includes: portable water systems, water storage, heat tape and heated waterers, frostfree nose pumps, pumping systems, power sources, plumping materials, pipelines, applicant’s equipment use and labour. Ineligible costs include: generators, watering systems in farmyards or corrals, portable feed bunks, portable livestock corral panels and pump houses. A few remaining items may be available for costshare under the Growing Forward Water Management Program; water sources such as new dugouts or wells, dugout aeration systems, waterlines below frost level in a farm yard.

RIMBEY REVIEW 11
Show ‘n Shine prevails weather BY TREENA MIELKE It was rather difficult to shine during Pas Ka Poo Park’s annual show ‘n shine held earlier this month as the rain put a damper not only on people, but on their vehicles as well. However, park administrator Cheryl Jones said about 15 dedicated people participated, despite the wet conditions. The best car award went to Bob Hyndman for his Tiffany Classic. The best truck award was won by Wendy ParkRamage with her 1948 Chevrolet and best in show award went to Roger Serba with his 1978 Ford. Participants came from Rimbey as well as Rocky Mountain House, Red Deer and other surrounding areas. “We had some people phone and cancel because of the weather,” said Jones. Unfortunately, the show ‘n shine was the parks final fundraiser of the season. However, the park will still be busy all summer with weddings, the Saturday Farmers Market and groups who come to tour the facility. “The sidewalks we had put in, thanks to Ponoka County, makes it much easier for seniors, especially those in walkers and wheelchairs, to get around,” said Jones. Vehicles from the Smithson International Truck Museum will participate in neighbouring parades this year, she said. Jones noted that Rimbey International Truck Museum is an accredited information centre. She said several vehicles from the museum will be entered in neighbouring parades.

MENGE POFFENROTH Vernon “Vern” Edward Poffenroth of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at the age of 78 years. Vern loved farming, camping, hockey, and the Calgary Stampeders, but most of all he loved being around his family. He was known as a caring son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, arena guy, coach, and friend. In his younger years, Vern farmed in De Winton and High River. After some time, he moved to Calgary where he worked various jobs, and where he met his best friend and the love of his life, Bev. Soon though, Vern’s love of farming drew them to make Rimbey their home. Together, they farmed for several years before moving into town. Many hockey players, figure skaters, and parents will remember friendships built with Vern as the Rimbey Arena Manager or hockey coach, which he enjoyed doing until their retirement. Upon retiring, Vern made new memories and cherished friendships while they embarked on full-time RV’ing, wintering in Nk’Mip (Osoyoos, B.C.). During the summer months of his retirement, along with Bev, he treasured the time they spent hosting at the Peaceful Valley Recreational Area. No matter how many people met Vern, whether meeting him for a short moment or knowing him for years, he made room in his heart for them. Vern will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his beloved wife, Bev; two sons, Wes (Aileen) Poffenroth of North Battleford, Saskatchewan; and Terry Poffenroth (Jaimie Cooney) of Sylvan Lake; and two daughters, Wanda (Richard) Peschel of Calgary; and Trista (Sean) Court of Edmonton; as well as ten cherished grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his sister, Arlene Edwards of Rimbey; his brother-in-law, Blane Roy of Hinton; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many close friends. Vern was predeceased by his parents, Victor and Hilda Poffenroth; his sister, Evie Snider; and two brothers-in-law, Dalton Roy and Winston Edwards. A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Vern’s Life was held at the Rimbey Arena, Rimbey on Friday, July 22, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Deborah Laing officiating. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Vern’s Memory may be made directly to Future Rimbey Arena Development Projects, c/o Town of Rimbey, Box 350, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0. Condolences to the Poffenroth Family may also be expressed by e-mail to: special_reflections@telusplanet.net. He will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his mother, Helen Menge of Red Deer; two brothers, Lutz (Lori) Menge also of Red Deer; and Edgar (Angelica) Menge of Russia; and two sisters, Sieglinde James of Chemainus, B.C.; and Honey Menge of Kaslo, B.C.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Attractive town logo is not enough Dear Editor, I can remain silent no longer about one particular issue in this town. In the Rimbey Review Sept. 22, 2015, CAO Donna Tona was quoted re: the new town logo that it “should convey a message.” In the same article she also said “what do we want to attract? Right now we are attracting nothing. Why would people want to come here?” My question is: Did it work? I would think not. Do we really want to attract people to our town? The Welcome to Rimbey sign at the intersection of 50th Avenue and Highway 20 with the four big, brown, ugly, rusted spotlights doesn’t exactly invite people to drive into town. Can it not be made more attractive to show the highway traffic that goes by that we take pride in welcoming people to Rimbey? However, when they get to the town office to check out the town, what would they find? The condition of the outside walkway and front patio is totally unacceptable with weeds, garbage, dirt and cigarette butts everywhere, in every corner. How does that attract people to this town and what message does that convey to anyone who wants to consider living or working in Rimbey? Now a good one. Please do something to improve this and show us that the town officials take pride in our town I know the logo doesn’t do it. Sincerely, Penny Giebelhaus
