One of Kimberley’s most familiar faces and busiest volunteers is leaving town next week. Stan Salikin will be moving with his daughter to Campbell River on Vancouver Island. Kimberley Chamber of Commerce Manager Mike Guarnery says the news of Stan leaving came up quickly but he thinks the community would really like a chance to say thanks for all the years Stan gave of himself. Anyone who has worked with Stan or has been helped by Stan or has been a friend of Stan’s is invited to the Platzl bandstand at 6 p.m. on

This time last year, there was great concern in Kimberley about the amount of water flowing over the Mark Creek dam. The City was urging residents to conserve water and began the process of updating the bylaw governing water usage so that stages of water restrictions could be introduced. This year the situation is not so dire. While the creek is running at normal levels for August, CAO Scott Sommerville says there is nowhere near the concern there was last year. “We haven’t had any water issues typical of this time of year,” he
said. “That could change, but so far so good.” However, conservation is still the word of the day and the City is under Stage 1 water restrictions. Residents of properties with even-numbered addresses water only on even-numbered calendar days (eg June 2,4,6 etc). Residents of properties with odd-numbered addresses water only on odd-numbered calendar days (eg June 1,3,5 etc). Watering is to be done ONLY between the hours of 4:00 am to 10:00 am AND 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Automatic irrigation

The activities organized by Centre 64 in the Platzl Saturday carried on in spite of the rain. The kids (and some older kids) had a great time with origami and painting, under the canopies. The music under the gazebo played to a small but appreciative crowd. The Selkirk Trio played to a sold out crowd in Studio 64 during Saturday Afternoon Tea. The trio are Jeff Faragher on cello, Sue Gould on piano and Nicola Everton on clarinet. All are members of the Symphony of the Kootenays, which Jeff conducts. The City of Cranbrook is proposing to amend the City’s Official Community Plan. On June 13, 2016, City Council gave first reading to “City of Cranbrook Official Community Plan Amendment Bylaw No. 3865, 2016”. If adopted, the proposed Official Community Plan (OCP) amendment will replace the following OCP map schedules with new maps made using the City’s GIS program: Schedule B Future Land Use Schedule C1 Development Permit Areas Schedule C2 Development Permit Areas Schedule C3 Development Permit Areas Schedule D Development Approval Information Areas Schedule H Major Road Network Plan This amendment will ensure consistency and will also allow the maps to be managed as part of the City’s GIS program. No land use designations for specific properties will change. Community garage sale supporting KRRG KRRG will host the Food Bank garage sale this year FOR THE BULLETIN
The Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank has graciously offered KRRG the opportunity to host this year’s community garage sale. The KRRG Community Garage Sale on Saturday, August 13, is your chance to declutter your house and get rid of gently used items, big or small, all are welcome. The proceeds will go toward helping a refugee family resettle in Kimberley. Please drop off any gently used items on Thursday and Friday (August 11/12), 4:00-7:00pm. “inSpirited” poetry and Dead Crow at Kaleidoscope MIKE REDFERN For the Bulletin
On Wednesday evening, August 10, Kimberley Kaleidoscope 2016 moves from puppetry and painting to poetry, presenting “inSpirited”, a performance of poetry and music in Studio 64 with local poets Heather Wattie, Jennifer Morgan, Lori Craig, Adam Tomlinson, and Mike Redfern and introducing New Denver poet & local historian, Arthur Sean Joyce, author of the recently published volume of poetry, “The Price of Transcendence”. Accompanying Joyce and interspersed between the other readings will be music by guitarist Noel Fudge, also of New Denver. “How would it change our behaviour if we believed the Earth was alive? What would it mean if we were to consider the world as inSpirited, infused with spirit?” These are some of the themes engaged by Sean Arthur Joyce in his 2015 book of poems, The Price of Transcen-
dence. The book uses poetry as an empathic technique to see the world through the eyes of the creatures with whom we share this planet. “At a time of global climate change, it’s vital to shift our view from the human-centred perspective through which we’ve traditionally seen the world” says Joyce. “Here in the Kootenays we’re blessed by being so close to nature. For many of us, it’s literally just a step out our back door to walk into a forest or dip our hands into a mountain stream. But for the first time in human history, the majority of Earth’s population now lives in cities. It’s more important than ever that we try to see the world through the eyes of a grizzly, or a mountain caribou, or even a chickadee.” In addition to read-
ing from The Price of Transcendence, Joyce will be premiering at Kaleidoscope a performance poem titled Dead Crow: Prologue. Part of a book-length work-in-progress designed to blur the boundaries of literary poetry and the newly burgeoning spoken word and performance poetry scene in North America, Dead Crow is a fully fledged character with a god’s-eye view of history. A cross between the Haida Raven Creator-Trickster, Celtic Morrigan crow goddess, and a jaded Philip Marlowe with a bad attitude, Dead Crow is exiled to Earth as an outcast for an act of hubris. His insights range from the wistful and nostalgic to cutting insights about our shadow side and a guarded optimism about the possibilities for social evolution. Joyce will appear in costume with musician Noel Fudge performing a live soundtrack to the piece. This will be the first time the Prologue has been performed live, and with a specially composed soundtrack. “inSpirited” starts at 7.30 p.m. and tickets are $12 adult, $10 youth 18 and under, available at kimberleyarts@gmail.

Gerry Sorensen project on schedule, budget $4.5 million repaving project continues C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
The rebuilding and repaving of Gerry Sorensen Way is well underway and on schedule and on budget, says City of Kimberley CAO Scott Sommerville. “The contact (with BA Blacktop) states completion by third week of October, but sections of the road will be open well before that date,” he said. The City received $4.5 million, which will cover 100 per cent of the costs, from the Gas Tax Strategic Priorities Fund. The only cost to the City would be if the project goes over $4.5 million and so far it is on budget. The repaving of Gerry Sorensen Way was something Mayor Don McCor-

He says it is Kimberley’s highest profile road and should be upgraded appropriately. There are an estimated 800,000 vehicle trips on Gerry Sorensen Way each year, both local and tourist.
The poor condition of Gerry Sorensen Way is largely due to poor drainage and improper subsurface materials from the original construction, the Mayor said when the funding was announced last February. The annual patching of potholes
and cracking has consumed approximately half of the City’s paving budget over the last five years. Currently traffic to the resort area is being diverted up Norton Avenue while the bottom half of Gerry Sorensen is completed.
Aquatic Centre re-opened C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
The City of Kimberley re-opened the Aquatic Centre on Monday, after a three-month plus shut down. City of Kimberley CAO Scott Sommerville said last Wednesday that the pool was full of water but one of the pumps did not operate properly during commissioning tests. He estimated it would take a couple of days to have the pump replaced then there was a final test to pass with Interior Health. Now that it is open, the Aquatic Centre will be offering additional toonie swims and community-sponsored free swims Weekend hours will be expanded into the evening by an hour. The new hours of operation will be 10 am-5 pm on Saturdays and 1 pm–8 pm on Sundays. The Aquatic Centre re-opened with a soft start, meaning not all programming will be available in August. Please check the schedule on the City’s website.
The Kimberley Aquatic Centre has been closed since April. Regularly scheduled programs will resume in September. The Aquatic Centre has been closed since April 21 when corroded restraints broke and allowed the six inch water main to shift, filling the Electrical/Pump room in the basement of the Kimberley Aquatic Centre to the ceiling within minutes. Damage was estimated at $200,000 by the insurance company. The City of Kimberley thanks all of the users of the Aquatic Centre for their patience.
Vehicle Fails to Navigate Turn: Ends up on Hydro Box FOR THE BULLETIN
Last week, a car driven by a Cranbrook local, drove through a locked gate at the Western Financial Place parking lot. The car came to rest when it hit a BC Hydro power box located outside the Cranbrook Curling Club. The lone female occupant of the vehicle was transported to the hospital by BC Ambu-
lance. Cranbrook Fire Department and BC Hydro attended in order to ensure the area was safe. A Cranbrook resident is currently being investigated for impaired driving. RCMP are requesting anyone who may have witnessed the event or events that led up to the accident to contact the Cranbrook RCMP.

Don Fabro; A wonderful human being ANTHONY DR ANSFELD For the Bulletin
I
f anyone ever deserved an article written about their life, it is Don Fabro, who passed away recently. Donnie was born and raised here in Kimberley, and to my knowledge, never left town. Mr. Don Fabro was unique in the fact he was an incredibly hard worker at the Fabro Sawmill he operated just outside the City limits (across the road from Meadowbrook Motors). I do not know how much formal schooling Donnie had, but the man had a Masters Degree in people. He absolutely loved people, and possessed the rare gift of listening very intently when you were speaking to him. The most important thing occurring in Dons world at that moment was YOU (A remarkable trait I wish more people had). Now, running the Fabro Sawmill was a 12 - 14 hour day for Don, then he would go to his farm in Meadowbrook and work till dark, with his wife Margie, and the kids when they were still on the Farm ( They had some cool breed of horses out there). Looking back, I guess I first met Donnie in the winter of 1965, as I was

trudging home to the North Star Motel. He stopped his red pick up truck to give me a ride. Dropping me off Don said, “If you need work this summer, come see me at the Sawmill”. I did that and worked with Don that summer. What a great guy to work with. Very cheerful and kind — outworking most of us too — Don Fabro treated the crew with dignity and respect. Donnie gave me my lunch hour break on the green chain (for those who have done that job, it will a man out of you). Somehow Don knew I played B. P. O. E. ANGEL baseball with his cousins Alan and Colin Fabro, so it was cool with Don when I had to leave early from work, especially if we were playing out of town. Regarding the Fabro family, incredibly and very sadly, Kimberley has lost Alan Fabro on June11th, Fiorina Fabro (mother) on July 26th, Colin Fabro on December 22nd of 2015, and now Donnie Fabro on April 21st 2016, all in the space of 10 months.

Sawmill (three shifts), the Marshall Wells Store uptown (a multifaceted hardware store), and the Esso Bulk Plant run by Bruno Fabro. The Fabro family were extremely fair people, (the modern word is ethical). They trusted townspeople, giving them charge accounts, put people in the houses they had ex-
pertly built. In essence they sponsored the working man. Don Fabro was Al Fabro’s son and the nephew of Milo Fabro. Brothers Alphonse and Milo were the overseers of the businesses here in Kimberley. They certainly had “business vision” and were primarily doing their business in Kimberley to serve folks, and not all about money the way society seems to be all about today. You had to be living here back then to get the gist of what I mean. Of course Donnie Fabro was a big part of that, supplying the lumber to build homes in Kimberley, Chapman Camp, and Meadowbrook. The Fabro name was Gold, and still is for that matter. But beyond all of the business stuff, Don Fabro was really all about people. Such a warm, loving individual. I remember a few years back we ran into each other at Sully’s Barbershop. I had just come down from skiing, Donnie was a little more stooped over, than I had remembered him. Shaking my hand he said to me “you have to come out to the farm for supper, we got things we have to talk about”. Sadly I did not take Don up on his offer. I really meant to, but never as they say “never got around to it “ (my loss). A word to the wise — when an old friend asks you to come over for a visit, do it , as you
may not have the opportunity at a later date. Time waits for no man , as they say. I saw Ken Hagen in Cranbrook the other day at Canadian Tire, with Don’s grandson (Ken was Don Fabro’s former son in law) Ken said “Don was just a tremendous fella”. Well stated. A funny thing about Life. I have known Donnie Fabro for over half a century (53 years) yet have never met his wife Margie, nor his children Danny, David and Patti Fabro, who are now grown up and have children of their own. By the way, I have never seen Don drive anything but a pick up truck, although I did see him driving his dad’s V.W. Blue Beetle once. Don told me he was “taking it in for an oil change”. His Father Alphonse Fabro was quite the guy too. I could write an article about The Fabro Brothers, Milo and Al, ) and probably will do so at a later date. Don Fabro was the rare combination of a man who was a very hard worker, absolutely loved people, and saw the very best in each one of us. As you can see I have referred to Don as Donnie most of the time, because the man had a boyishness about him that never waned, and that ever present twinkle in his eye. He shall be missed.

Official opening and dedication of Rotary Club’s latest gift to the youth of Kimberley, the beautiful Little League Baseball Park, took place Thursday, August 1, before a good crowd of parents and friends. Murray Garden as master of ceremonies, called P. Barratt, Rotary Club president, to make the actual presentation to the City of Kimberley. Mr. Barratt reminded his audience of the objects of the Rotary Park in constructing these parks for the youth of Kimberley, construction that was only possible because of financial support the people of Kimberley have given to the Rotarians’ various money raising proj-
ects. Rev. F.A McPhee then dedicated the park to the cause of sportsmanship and making of friendships among the young people of the district. In accepting the gift Alderman Jack Glennie, city representative on the Parks Board, expressed thanks to Rotary on behalf of the city. Mayor Cliff Swan also expressed the city’s thanks and R. Westgate, president of the Little League Association, thanked Rotarians on behalf of that organization.

On July 24, the Cranbrook History Centre and Dr. Jean Bernard Caron discussed the results of a discovery in the Fort Steele neighbourhood, and a significant addition to the local fossil record, at the third installment in the CHC’s public lecture series on local paleontological heritage Dr. Caron returned to Cranbrook last month to follow up on the previous Fort Steele expedition. Along with Dr. Bob Gaines, Dr. Mark Webster and Dr. Gabriela

Discussion relative to the difference in cost of steel or laminated wood parabolic arches for the roof were inclusive. Architect Paul Smith of Trail, on behalf of the Society, is endeavouring to obtain an estimate on laminated beams from a Vancouver engineering firm for purposes of comparison. Latest estimated cost and considered to be almost an absolute minimum for a new arena is $250,000. The chair lift portion of the brief will remain as is with two estimates on chair lifts, two on T-bars, ranging from $60,000 to $90,000. In the opinion of the directors the bid by the Riblett Tramway Company for a chair lift was best for this area. A promise was also made by this company to supply the equipment at prices approximately 10 per cent below current costs if it is purchased this year. One important fact emerged after considerable discussion, stressing the idea that we are not presenting two separate projects, but rather the Project Society program at this time. In case members feel that the directors are sitting back doing nothing and just waiting for the events to happen, I would like to point out that since the Society was formed
in February, there has been at least one meeting per week of the full directorship. In addition there has been nu-
merous committee meetings under various chairmen. The executive are trying to lead the way. If you are a member of
the Society you can help by putting aside differences and thinking of our activities on a complete recreation basis.
Mangano, Dr. Caron’s team looked at previously discovered species and possible new species in the Fort Steele area — already renowned for its beds of trilobite fossils — and assessed possible soft bodied created indigenous to this area during Cambrian time. The creature introduced at the CHC lecture — Anomalocaris Canadensis (“abnormal shrimp”), was a member of an animal family believed to be related to ancestral arthropods. They roamed the oceans in these parts half a billion years ago during the Cambrian Period. The Cambrian lasted about 53 million years and marked a dramatic burst of evolutionary changes in life on Earth, known as the “Cambrian Explosion.”
Anomalocaris was huge — almost a metre long — and is thought to have been a predator, and to have even feasted on trilobites, although the scientific jury is still out on this. We are in the heart of trilobite country after all. Anomalocaris propelled itself through the water by undulating the flexible lobes on the sides of its body, but one of its fascinating features is its eyes. Findings have indicated that advanced arthropod eyes able to “tell friend or foe and detect features of the environment” had evolved very early, before the evolution of jointed legs or hardened exoskeletons. The eyes were 30 times as powerful as those of trilobites, long thought to have had the most advanced eyes of

any contemporary species. With 30,000 lenses, the resolution of the three centimetre-wide eyes would have been rivalled only by that of the modern dragonfly, which has 28,000 lenses in each eye [information gathered from Wikipedia]. Varieties of Anomalocaris have been discovered at the famed Burgess Shale. Dr. Caron is still working on correlating the relationship between the Burgess Shale and Fort Steele Anomalocari — to determine what transition factors or evolutionary processes are between them. In the meantime, Anomalocaris Canadensis will be a star attraction at the CHC’s coming paleontological gallery.

Missing women inquiry pre-determined
T
he federal government’s National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls is preparing to get underway in September. With five commissioners led by B.C. judge Marion Buller and a budget that has swelled by a third to $54 million before it even starts, this inquiry has one big advantage over all the previous studies of Canada’s intractable problems of poverty and violence in aboriginal communities. In this case, the politicians all agree what the outcome is going to be. They’ve been saying so for months, since the Justin Trudeau government got elected on this and other passionate, if questionable, promises. Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould, a member of the We Wai Kai Nation on the B.C. coast, a former Crown prosecutor and chair of the B.C. Treaty Commission, announced the terms of reference last week. She stressed that the inquiry will not attempt to retry cold cases, but to examine the “root causes” of the high numbers of missing and murdered women. Next up was Indigenous Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett, who has no doubt at all what those “root causes” are: racism, sexism and the lingering effects of colonialism. Bennett has been meeting steadily with grieving families since being appointed, and now accepts that racist, indif-
ferent cops are the main “root cause.” Bennett explained this conclusion from New York in April, while attending a “Women of the World” summit. It’s an “uneven application of justice,” she told The Globe and Mail, a phrase we’ll hear again and again. “You end up with people who have been told it’s an overdose, or a suicide or an accident,” Bennett said. RCMP have reported BC VIEWS close to 1,200 unsolved cases of murdered or missTom ing indig enous Fletcher women since 1980, a figure that Bennett scoffs at. What’s her evidence? She’s talked to families, and knows it’s “way more” than that. One of the previous inquiries was by a United Nations official, James Anaya, in 2014. He noted the alarming statistics of education outcome and violent offences against women, and referred to 660 cases documented by the Native Women’s Association of Canada. He also described being besieged by demands for a national inquiry, as he went through the stacks of studies that have already been done. “Since 1996,” Anaya wrote in his UN report, “there have been at least 29 official inquiries and reports dealing with aspects of this issue, which have resulted in over 500 recommendations for action.” As the latest inquiry was being

launched, Perry Bellegarde, the current Assembly of First Nations national chief, recited Bennett’s speaking points about the conclusions it will reach. Bellegarde told CTV the problem is vastly under-reported because “…oh, it’s an accidental death. Oh, it’s a suicide.” Then he called for more money for housing and other programs from the failed Indian Act system. There are several glaring factors that apparently will not be discussed, because they fall outside the politically correct boundaries of this pre-determined narrative. One is the even more alarming number of aboriginal men and boys who are victims of violent crime. Another is the rate of domestic abuse reported by indigenous women, which Statistics Canada estimated this year at about 10 per cent of their population. That’s three times the national average, but it was not mentioned amid the demands for justice at the inquiry. Another key issue that is forbidden from discussion is the social and economic viability of remote communities. Some of them haven’t been able to maintain clean water and safe housing, much less education and employment, despite billions in spending every year. Letters to the Editor Tennis Courts
As an avid tennis player I want to commend all those parties involved in the wonderful job of refurbishing the Gyro tennis courts and adding the pickle ball courts. These will prove to be a real addition to our community. The challenge now is getting the City of Cranbrook to properly maintain these courts, as their track record is rather dismal in this regard. What happened to the Kinsmen courts and at Gyro are an example of very poor maintenance. Let’s hope they have learned from this experience. Neil Matheson Cranbrook

In response to an article, “Christianity for Non-Christians,” by Yme Woensdregt, I would like to share some “food for thought!” Unfortunately, there are people that have had hurt feelings with involvement in a congregation. We are human and we do fail in dealing with misunderstandings, decisions, in reacting to a circumstance in an unloving way. I have belonged to a church for many years and this is the way that I choose in
worshiping the Lord, my Savour, and Creator God. Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus encourage & uplift me in my faith walk. We endeavour to serve faithfully in His inreach and outreach with God’s love. God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16. I believe if one reads the bible, perhaps, starting with Mathew, Luke and John with an open heart and mind, the Word takes hold and a person would then pursue a relationship with Jesus. We do pray for forgiveness when we have sinned and we do sin. Jesus died on the Cross for Sin. We need to abide by the Ten Commandments, treat our neighbour as we would want to be treated. Love your neighbour as yourself— Matthew 19:19. We appreciate, respect, friendship, help and fellowship. We do fail, we should ask for forgiveness, understand that not all will think, act and embrace us. We do not separate ourselves from people who do not have the same beliefs. I pray that I might make a difference for Jesus’ sake. It is God who calls someone to faith through His Word. I am thankful that in Elementary School, we learned and recited the “Lord’s Prayer.” I do believe in Eternal life but agree that going to church is not an answer, (so to speak) of the goal! It is by

faith alone, through God’s grace that we are saved! John 1:1, 2, 3. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. I do believe God is our Heavenly Father in this world, His kingdom. If we do not know what or how to pray; the Holy Spirit intercedes for us. Christians are compassionate, caring and hope to share their concerns and help whenever and wherever needed. We should know our limitations, gifts and know when to “Let go and Let God!” We endeavour to use our time, talents and treasure to spread the faith we have in a loving God who is always with us, will not forsake us in spite of our human nature, our often selfish desires and undeserving of all the many many blessings. I thank God for faithful leaders, for those that have the strength, the calling to go into sometimes a hostile environment to spread the Word and those at home that support one another. Chickens, in the war on malaria
I
had malaria once, and it was extremely unpleasant. I had been working in Yemen, but I actually contracted it when I was flying home on a Dutch airline that must remain nameless. The flight made a stop in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, and the plane was parked out on the runway while waiting to pick up passengers — right on the edge of a mangrove swamp on the Red Sea coast . The pilot turned the engines off to save fuel, and then opened the door to give us fresh air. It was night-time, and so a million mosquitoes swarmed into the plane. In five minutes everybody had been bitten multiple times. The passengers then revolted and the pilot shut the door and turned the air con back on, but it was too late. I fell ill and collapsed a couple of weeks later, when I was at my wife’s family’s house in a small village in southern France, but I was lucky. My wife, who grew up in Africa, thought it was malaria, and the village doctor (who had served with the French army in Africa) confirmed it, so there and then he gave me a massive dose of antimalarial drugs. By the time they got me to the hospital in Bayonne, they couldn’t even find any of the Plasmodium parasites in my bloodstream. They kept me in hospital for a couple of days anyway, but it wasn’t that bad, because in French hospitals they give you wine with your meals. Small crisis, not many hurt. But the point of the story is that none of this would have happened to me (and presumably to some of the other passengers too) if only there had been chickens on the plane. Statistics can sometimes lead to sig-
nificant medical breakthroughs. In this case a team of Ethopian and Swedish scientists did a statistical study in three villages in western Ethiopia about the feeding habits of nocturnal, malaria-carrying Anopheles arabiensis mosquitoes. The results were instructive. Outdoors, the mosquitoes preferred to feed on cattle (63 percent of bites), with human beings coming next (20 percent), and goats and sheep bringing up the rear (5 percent and 2.6 percent). Indoors, people provided 69 percent of the mosquitoes’ compared to catGwynne meals, tle at 18 percent and sheep and goats coming Dyer last again. (In this part of Ethiopia, people sometimes bring their animals indoors at night.) There were also plenty of chickens around, both indoors and out. But in one outdoor sample, only one female mosquito out of 1,200 had chicken blood in her. In the indoor sample, none did. MOSQUITOES DON’T BITE CHICKENS. Why not? Maybe evolution has taught mosquitoes to avoid chickens because chickens eat mosquitoes. But how do mosquitoes actually spot a chicken? Certainly not by sight: tiny compound eyes are good for spotting movement, but they do not give you much detail or any distance vision at all. So maybe by smell? That would be handy. We can’t disguise ourselves as chickens, but we could try smelling like them. Or at least have something that smells chickeny nearby. In one experiment, the scientists even hung cages with live chickens in them over people’s beds at night, and lo! They had very few mosquito bites — fewer even than people sleep-

ing under insecticide-treated bed nets. Admittedly, this approach is a bit impractical for general use. Something more compact and less noisy would be preferable. So the scientists tried putting chicken feathers near people’s beds, and it still worked. Then they tried distilled essence of chicken odour (isobutyl butyrate, naphthalene, hexadecane and trans-limonene, if you must know), and that worked too. Almost half the world’s population (3.2 billion people) lives in areas where malaria-bearing mosquitoes are present. About one in fifteen of those people actually comes down with malaria each year, and almost half a million of them die of it. Many tens of millions more spend a long, agonising time being very sick indeed. Anything that cuts into those numbers would be most welcome, and prevention is much better than cure. CHEAP prevention is even better, and compared to insecticide-treated bed nets and various experimental vaccines, just sprinkling some “essence de poulet” (chicken fragrance) around before going to bed has got to be cheaper. Essence de poulet probably won’t be on the market for a while yet, but hats off to Professor Habte Tekie of the University of Addis Ababa and Professor Rickard Ignell of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, who led the Ethiopian-Swedish team that did the study. (Their full report is available online in the 21 July issue of Malaria Journal) Meanwhile, if you want to bring a chicken along on our next camping trip, it’s fine with me. Bugaboo Spire re-enactment captures the legend Eric Elliot t Columbia Valley Pioneer
For the first time in a century, mountaineers have successfully climbed Bugaboo Spire using much of the same vintage equipment as one of the most legendary figures of Canadian climbing did in 1916. Ontarians Bryan Thompson, Rob LeBlanc, Garry Reiss and Natalia Danalachi made the journey out west in July to make the 10,500foot ascent up Bugaboo Spire using vintage gear and equipment from 100 years ago in hopes of re-enacting one of the most storied climbs made by the famous mountaineer Conrad Kain. “The climb that was done on Bugaboo Spire that was done 100 years ago was by far one of the most challenging climbs
of that time and it was considered to be pretty challenging for years after that,” said Ivan Petrov, one of the photographers on the trip. “We were interested in experiencing what it was like to do something like that in 1916 and we also wanted to experience what it was like, not just to do the climb itself, but to camp in old wool clothes and use the same equipment and use the same foods that they would have eaten 100 years ago.” The planning process started two months ago when Mr. Thompson, shopping at army surplus shops, antique stores and eBay, began assembling the necessary supplies for the trip that were most similar to that of the 1916 climb. As the leader of the expedition, he wanted to

Making the climb increasingly difficult, Mr. Petrov said, was that they had to redo the route several times at each stage so they could bring all the equipment up with them, which added additional time to each stage. In the end, the group made the tough decision that it would only be safe for two of the group, Mr. LeBlanc and Ms. Danalachi, to reach the summit without taking on unnecessary risk. “Overall, it was one of the best experiences of my life,” Ms. Danalachi said in an interview after reaching the summit. “It was not easy, but all the suffering that we went through was worth it. It was nice to see what Conrad Kain and all the climbers back in 1916 had to challenge in
order to summit.” As an amateur mountaineer himself, Mr. Petrov said that most of the crew had learned of this famous climb through books and wanted to share that story with more Canadians today. “It’s not something that the general public seek out unless they’re involved in mountaineering or climbing, but it certainly seemed like something that required almost super human effort and preparation for planning 100 years ago without knowing what’s around the corner and whether they’d be able to get to the summit or safely come back down the mountain,” he said. While not a perfect re-enactment, the group plans to produce the documentary film of their journey later this year with a trailer to its release available on YouTube by searching “Hobnails and Hemp Rope documentary trailer” or going to www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrRDb8Kfv0U.

Whistler CEO Dave Brownlie says Vail would provide his company with greater financial strength and greater diversity through alliances in the United States, Australia and Canada. Vail CEO Rob Katz says the combined expertise of the two companies will improve the experience for guests and preserve the brand and character of the B.C. all-season resort - which is about 125 kilometres north of Vancouver. Whistler-Blackcomb shareholders are being offered C$676 million of cash and Vail stock (NYSE:MTN) worth about C$715 million - making the deal worth nearly C$1.4 billion. Cranbrook’s Dagen Duczek (above, centre) and Ryder Duczek (below, right) hit the podium over the weekend at the BC Wakeboard Provincials on Vancouver Island. Dagen stomped out a strong run in both the qualifiers and finals to snag the gold medal in the U9 Division. Battling a lower leg injury, Ryder was able to complete his runs in qualifiers and finals and took the bronze medal in the Intermediate Boys Division. Shambhala: ‘You could overdose very, very quickly’
Harm Reduction Director at famed electronic music festival talks about the new dangers from designer drugs, and the festival’s plans to keep everyone safe Will Johnson Nelson Star
Stacey Lock has been working in the harm reduction tent at Shambhala Music Festival for eight years now, but she’s never seen the party scene like this before. According to her the province-wide fentanyl emergency has everyone on edge, including the festival’s organizers. “It’s really affecting the party scene because it’s changing the climate. It’s getting sketchy. Not too long ago it felt like you could know what you were doing and if you didn’t know we could tell you,” Lock, who is the festival’s harm reduction director, told the Nelson Star. “Now we’ve got chemists coming up with designer, black
market drugs and half the time we have no idea what we’re looking at. We have to do research on the fly.” The biggest problem: they can’t test for fentanyl. “Right now it’s being cut into things like E or coke or any kind of party drug. Even if a little speck gets in there and you’re not an opiate user you could overdose very, very quickly.” And it’s not even the worst drug out there — Chinese import W-18 is also starting to make an appearance, with seizures reported in Vancouver and elsewhere, and it’s reported to have 1,000 times the potency of morphine. “Because of the B.C. state of emergency and all the deaths that have been occurring, we felt the need to bump up
our services and educate people.” Shambhala already has a six-pronged approach to harm reduction, with an ambitious medical and sexual health team, a “sanctuary” for those having a bad trip and a female-only area to help prevent sexual assaults. But Lock said this year’s situation has inspired them to up their game even further. That’s why the festival is crowd-funding for a mass spectrometer, a $250,000 machine capable of testing drugs more thoroughly than their current equipment, but it won’t be in action until at least next year. “And the machine will be at ANKORS yearround, so Shambhala will have it for five days and Nelson will have it

for the rest of the year. It’s going to be available there four days a week for residents to test their drugs.” The festival has looked into provincial funding but has been unsuccessful. They’re going to keep crowd-funding to purchase the machine until they reach their goal. “It takes time to calibrate all the drugs in order to be able to test for it. We’re also going to need lab technicians, but already we’ve had so many people contact us to say they can run these machines and help.” But testing your drugs is only one aspect of staying safe, according to Lock. “First of all, simple party tip is to test-drive your drugs. Start small because you can dose up but you can’t dose down. Stick with the buddy system, and if your friend goes down, artificial respiration is your most important
tool.” She said their volunteers have been trained with Nalaxone, a medication used to block the effects of opioids, especially in overdose. “We’re going to train first responders so they’re on the ground ready. We’re also going to have an SOS number and we’re going to be giving people information about fentanyl at the gate.” And the stakes are huge. “Whether you’re personally affected or you have compassion for other people that are vulnerable to overdosing…this is an initiative that can help save lives.” Their goal is to be “upstream” rather than “crisis-oriented.” “If we’re upstream and educating and helping people stay safe, then we won’t be dealing so much with crisis intervention and we’ll be saving a lot of heartbreak.”

As part of Interior Health’s overdose emergency response, the Take Home Naloxone program has expanded to 70 sites which includes: all Interior Health emergency departments, public health centres, mental health and substance use offices as well as several community agencies. “Drug-related overdoses and deaths are a huge concern,” said Health Minister Terry Lake. “Interior Health’s expansion of the Take Home Naloxone program could potentially save the life of some-
one’s friend, parent or child. It is part of B.C.’s comprehensive approach to address this crisis and to do everything we can prevent future tragedies.” In emergency departments, the program is offered to patients who are being treated for an opioid overdose. At public health centres, mental health and substance use offices, and community agencies the program is available to anyone at risk of overdose from opioid drugs. Opioid drugs include both prescription and illicit drugs such as oxycodone, morphine, heroin, fentanyl and others.
This expansion increases access to the life-saving medication, naloxone. Naloxone can reverse an opioid overdose by restoring breathing within two to five minutes. It improves the chances of survival while waiting for medical help to arrive. Naloxone is a safe medication that cannot be abused and has no effect on the body in the absence of opioids. It is non-addictive, does not produce a high and has no street value. In addition to making naloxone kits more accessible, the Take Home Naloxone program also provides
training on how to prevent, recognize and respond to an overdose situation. “The program not only gives those at risk free naloxone kits, it also provides an opportunity to offer information on how to prevent an overdose from occurring in the first place by educating clients about factors that can increase the risk of overdose,” said Dr. Silvina Mema, Medical Health Officer. “For example, one of the things we tell people is that if they haven’t used a drug for a while their tolerance or response to that drug can change and that puts them at
greater risk of an overdose.” The training also offers practical overdose prevention tips such as always starting with a small amount of the drug, avoid mixing different drugs, and avoid using alone. Crucial life-saving steps including recognizing the signs of an overdose, putting someone in the recovery position, how to perform rescue breathing, and administer naloxone as well as the importance of getting emergency medical help as soon as possible are also covered. The Take Home Naloxone program is pro-
vided in collaboration with the B.C. Centre for Disease Control. Approximately 1670 naloxone kits have been distributed across Interior Health since the program first began in August 2012. Reports indicate at least 180 kits have been used to reverse an overdose. The Take Home Naloxone program is specifically for those at risk of an opioid overdose. A list of Take Home Naloxone sites is available on the Interior Health website. Friends, family members and others who wish to carry naloxone are encouraged to purchase a kit from local
pharmacies – a prescription for naloxone is no longer required. All of the initiatives support the work of the newly formed Joint Task Force on Overdose Response. Headed by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall and Director of Police Services Clayton Pecknold, the task force will provide expert leadership and advice to the Province on additional actions to prevent and respond to overdoses in British Columbia. The actions also align with recommendations identified by the BC Overdose Action Exchange.

Collector program expanding to ‘muscle cars’ Tom Fletcher Black Press
The B.C. government is expanding its collector vehicle licence system to include eligible modified cars made between 1958 and 1974, to capture the popular “muscle car” era of the 1960s. The ICBC collector plate program gives car enthusiasts a lower-cost licence plate that allows occasional use for parades and classic car shows. ICBC plans to take applications starting in 2017 for eligible modified vehicles up to 1974, and replica cars resembling North American production cars from 1942 and earlier. With strict rules that the cars must be in “collectible condition,” changes will take in modified popular cars
from the Dodge Duster to the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang, as well as replicas of the popular Ford “deuce coupe” from the 1930s. Premier Christy Clark announced a break for older cars this spring, allowing vehicles from 1940 or earlier and their replicas to run without fenders or mud flaps when the highway is dry and paved. Transportation Minister Todd Stone said the collector car industry is significant for B.C., with registered collector vehicles having doubled to 26,000 in the past 10 years. “We want to see this specialty vehicle program remain viable, preserve vehicle history and evolve with the times,” Stone said.

Modified versions of the 1969 Camaro SS and other popular vehicles will soon be eligible for B.C. collector plates, allowing occasional use for parades and car shows. “That’s why we are opening up the opportunity to owners of spe-
cialty cars within the ‘muscle car’ era.” Currently, the stan-
dard collector plate is available to cars 25 years or older, as well as dis-
continued or limited production vehicles 15 years or older. It requires
a stock engine with no performance enhancements, no rust, dents or “significant wear and tear” of the interior. Modified vehicles from 1958 or older are currently eligible for collector plates, if they retain the shell of the original body but have parts replaced or modified in the chassis, engine, suspension, steering or brakes. Owners have to apply for a collector or modified collector plate, with purchase and parts bills, photos and inspection reports. Applications for collector and modified collector programs are available on ICBC’s website, www.icbc. com, and can be dropped off at Autoplan brokers.

Are you one of those adventurous British Columbians who proudly say camping is the highlight of your sum-mer? You may spend hours planning where to go and what to do but don’t forget to also plan what to eat once you get there! Without proper refrigeration it can be easy to choose convenient processed foods of little nutritional value. A little creative planning will go a long way to provide both the nutrition you need as well as a delicious meal the whole family will enjoy. Vegetables and even fruit are often forgotten when packing for a weekend away. They should not to be over-looked though, because the fibre, vitamins and minerals provided by these foods will keep your digestive sys-tem and entire body happy. Fresh fruits and vegetables are easy to bring along especially if you have refrigera-tion or a cooler. Packing them uncut in plastic containers helps prevent bruising and spoiling, and a moistened paper towel will keep greens fresh longer. Vegetables that start to spoil are safe to cook and eat, just remove the worst parts. For dessert, bake fruit in the coals with spices or dip in marshmallow fluff and roast over the open flame. Grill a banana in aluminum foil with dark chocolate, almond butter and coconut. Find other creative ways to include fruits and vegetables in a variety of meals and snacks throughout the day. Protein is another important source of energy and provides building blocks for the muscles you are using to swim, hike and paddle. It is all too easy to choose proteins high in salt, preservatives and saturated fat. Start your day off right by including protein to keep you fuller for longer. Here are some breakfast ideas: yogurt or milk with cereal and berries, eggs hardboiled at home or nut butter spread on fruit, crackers or toast. For dinner consider bringing fillets or ground meat that are frozen beforehand to last longer. There are so many ways to enjoy fresh meat, it can be pre-marinated, made into kebabs or included in your favourite one pot meal. Later in your camping trip you may have to depend on protein from canned beans or dehydrated meals instead. Finally, choose quality grains to provide fuel for your brain and essential B vitamins and minerals like iron and magnesium. Whole grains low in salt, sugar and fat are the best options. Try oatmeal or whole wheat ban-nock at breakfast, pitas or wraps at lunch or make a whole grain salad like tabbouleh to include with dinner. Add whole grain cereal or popcorn to your favourite trail mix, for a little something different. As in any area of life, the key is to find a balance that works for you. The next time you go to explore the beautiful outdoors find a good balance between enjoyment and healthy nourishment. You may even decide to take it all the way and live off the land like our hunter-gatherer ancestors - just don’t forget your fishing rod! A Good Fibbing Dear Annie: Is lying something that is just more acceptable these days, or is it particular to my family? I try to be an honest person. I am beginning to feel as though that is a fault in my character. I don’t “mis-recall” events of the past. I don’t make up someone else’s words or attitudes to make my narrative more interesting to my listener. I don’t invent some past wrongdoing to excuse my behavior. I think it is a grave sin to outright tell a lie about someone. But I have family members who do all of the above. Is there a recessive gene in my family? Or do I just see this because they ARE family? Sometimes I think no one values honesty anymore or puts importance on accuracy when talking. At times, I have had to confront family members about what they have said. I am then called self-righteous. Other times, I have just curtailed contact to avoid hearing the tales they tell. They seem to feel that if you can’t prove what they say to be a lie, then it is as good as truth. OK, so everyone has told a white lie or perhaps lied if backed into a corner, but this seems to be beyond that. Is lying more acceptable in today’s culture? Am I an “honesty freak” or self-righteous? -- Still Believing Honesty Is the Nest Policy Dear Still Believing: Freak? No. Self-righteous? Well... I won’t deny you your props for always telling the truth and encouraging others to do so. Honesty is a virtue. But so are patience and humility. Look, I don’t know exactly what your family members are lying about. If your aunt exaggerates the number of hours her flight was delayed because she wants sympathy, let her have her pity party. Sometimes people take artistic license to make their anecdotes into more dramatic stories, and that’s fine (as long as it’s not a lie that could end up hurting someone). The fact is that everybody has faults, and keeping tally of other people’s transgressions doesn’t make you any happier or them any better. It just makes you more judgmental. Dear Annie: Perhaps this is an odd letter to send to you, but you have such a huge readership that I am hoping I can get an answer to my query. I am extremely allergic to shellfish (a very common allergy) and was surprised to find out restaurants fry shellfish, chicken, potatoes, etc., in the same oil. Can this create a dangerous situation for those allergic to shellfish? Thanks for your help. -- Hoping Not to Be “Shell-Shocked” Dear Shell-Shocked: It’s dangerous for those with allergies to consume food cooked in the same oil as shellfish. The Food Allergy Research & Education organization (http:// www.safefare.org) offers a template to create a chef card -- a wallet-sized breakdown of your allergies you can present to servers to make everyone’s life easier (and you safer) when you’re eating out. FARE also offers a searchable database of allergy-aware restaurants. Be careful of sitting near kitchens in restaurants, too, as shellfish protein can become airborne in the steam released during cooking. Because allergic reactions to shellfish often constrict breathing, it’s advised that you carry an epinephrine auto-injector at all times. People who aren’t sure whether they have food allergies should visit an allergist. About 60 percent of people who are allergic to shellfish experience their first reactions as adults. Tourist Christianity, a place that looks intriguing, but â&#x20AC;Ś A n a s ta s i a Bartl e t t

y husband and I spent the last long weekend being tourist in our own town. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve lived here for over 20 years and we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know the details of the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history the short term visitor picks up while visiting the tourist spots. However, even though a tourist may know detailed bits and pieces about a town, they rarely know the town. A resident, on the other hand, does. A town is a community and if a community wants to survive, it takes care of its members. Now people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always agree how to do that and some have hidden agendas, but ultimately, there is a consistent goal to make the town work and look after the residents. The residents may include the homeless, entrepreneurs, recovering addicts, Olympic athletes, mentally or physically ill, Phds, high school drop-outs, gang members, military â&#x20AC;&#x201D; anyone who lives there. I used to be a Christian tourist, not someone who goes on pilgrimages, but rather a someone who tours various flavours of Christianity. The church I attended as a child, defined sin as doing the wrong thing, a series of rules and regulations which had to be obeyed or else God would be made at you and you would end up in hell. It was a common parenting technique, behave or be spanked. But Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s punishment was scarier. My teenage rebellion against parental authority included my rebellion against this version of God. My subsequent touring of differ-
ent faiths led me to a place where I accepted Jesus as my Lord and saviour. My self-centred understanding of that concept made me a spiritually superior jerk â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;cause I had my ticket to heaven and anyone who didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe as I did was a sinner who was going to hellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Every encounter I had with people, especially my family, became an opportunity to preach the gospel as I knew it, whether they wanted to hear it or not. I continued to tour, checking out a variety of one issue churches. They all had appealing facades, sounded good and, like at most attractions, the tourists were tightly controlled. At one church, I knew a woman who was encouraged by the church leaders to leave her husband because â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;he held her back from her ministryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. I met people who were told their faith wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t strong enough since they werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t healed from a physical disease or they were struggling financially. They must have been sinning because because â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;perfect health and financial success were marks of Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s blessingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Once I asked a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;teacherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; about the struggles and the persecutions of the early Christians and apostles, and I was told â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;if they knew then what we know now (about faith) they wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have had to suffer.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; I knew a young woman castigated for missing Sunday evening services when she went skiing after the morning service on her only day off. I saw marriages explode because people acted the part of good Christians while, in re-
ality, they struggled with the problems and pain which their church said would disappear once they said â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the prayerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. When their lives finally fell apart, they felt shunned by the church since they obviously were not â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;new creatures in Christ.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; These were churches which shot their wounded, hid the bodies out of sight while the stench announced a failure of their love. This was tourist Christianity, a place that looks intriguing but is unable to sustain life. True Christianity requires us to love each other no matter what. As a Christian tourist, I had a self-sanctified, holier-than-thou attitude which was not conducive to loving relationships. As an Orthodox Christian, at every liturgy I confess I am the worst of sinners and, compared to Christ, I am. This humility is the way to loving relationships which creates community; a group of people living with, and struggling to overcome their problems, who are strengthened by the love and care of those around them. An accepting community nurtures all its members and doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t kill the weak and shun the difficult. Sure, the passing tourist may spend money but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the community which, in the long run, sustains or destroys the people who live there full-time.
