RIMBEY REVIEW 3

Busy summer for Rimbey RCMP BY CONST. CARMAN DUTZ

The Rimbey RCMP have been dealing with an average of 50 calls for service per week over the summer thus far. Their consistent enforcement efforts have paid off with successful search warrants leading to the recovery of stolen property and arrests of prolific offenders. In partnership with Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT), and Safer Communities And Neighbourhoods

(SCAN), the Rimbey RCMP was able to bring several individuals before the courts with numerous charges. Many of these people had already been brought before justices and were out on bail with conditions. On June 14, a 40-yearold female resident of Rimbey was charged again with possession of stolen property. I say again, because at the time of her arrest on June 14 she had three separate release documents all with simi-

lar conditions that she continued to breach. This time, when she was brought before a Justice of the Peace, she was remanded into custody. She currently has over 130 charges before the courts. Along with this female, a 41-year-old male resident of Rimbey was also arrested and charged with 15 counts of possession of stolen property (including vehicles) and four counts of failing to comply with the conditions of his previous release.

He, too, was remanded into custody. They appeared in Rimbey court on August 5. Police have arrested and charged 24-yearold Jonathan Andrews, a resident of the Bentley area, and 37-year-old Shane Hicks of Rimbey following a lengthy investigation into the attempted theft of an ATM at the Rimbey Servus Credit Union on June 5 and other ATM thefts and commercial break & enters in Central Alberta. They were both caught red handed while breaking into the post office in Mirror. Search warrants on two related properties resulted in the seizure of stolen property including a firearm, vehicle and enclosed trailer that had been used by Hicks and Andrews during their crime spree in Central Alberta. The men are sched-

uled to appear in the Wetaskiwin courthouse on August 9. On June 18, Rimbey RCMP executed a search warrant on a rural property in the Hoadley area. During the search, police recovered four stolen vehicles and two stolen licence plates. A 27-year-old male resident of Hoadley has been charged with six counts of possession of stolen property. He was scheduled to appear in court in Rimbey on August 5. On June 10, a vehicle was stopped in a rural road for having expired registration. The 23-year-old driver of the vehicle had an odour of liquor on his breath and there was also an odour of fresh marijuana in the vehicle. The driver was arrested. A search of the vehicle found open beer containers and a quantity of marijuana

and drug paraphernalia. The resident of Rocky Mountain House was charged for possession of a controlled substance as well as provincial offences under the Traffic Safety Act and the Gaming and Liquor Regulations. He was to attend court on August 5. On July 21, Rimbey RCMP arrested a 35-yearold Rimbey male as a result of an investigation into theft of gasoline. An alert neighbour called the RCMP early in the morning after observing suspicious behaviour. A male was seen riding around on a bicycle with a gas can. A description of the male was provided to the police who quickly found the suspect riding a bike near the community centre. When he saw the police, the suspect pedaled his bicycle as fast as he could across continued on page 7

Pipestone Flyer No doubt you’ve heard much over the past 10 to 15 years about how retail shopping is dying, and online shopping is taking over big time. I don’t believe it. Don’t get me wrong, I am an eBay person. I buy and sell on eBay all the time. I love it, but it’s more out of necessity than anything else. EBay can actually be an art form, but that’s a subject for another day. The “online shopping is #1” mantra is nothing more than an urban legend, and I think I can make a pretty convincing case that “brick and mortar” retail shopping is rolling better than

ever in Alberta and it is possibly causing some noticeable harm. If, in fact, online retail is taking over the world, why are we seeing massive rural commercial developments popping up on both ends of the province? Some years ago Albertans saw two gargantuan developments built outside Calgary and Edmonton. CrossIron Mills shopping centre was opened in 2009 north of Calgary in the Balzac area. If you’ve never seen it, the development sort of looks like a freshly painted trailer park with overarching signs, dozens upon dozens of box-style stores and acres of pavement and concrete. The development is described as the largest single-level mall in Alberta, and one of the biggest in the country and includes 206 vendors. When built, it gobbled up over 1.1 million square feet of farmland. Those of us who grew up in Alberta drove past that farmland many times. The mall was based upon an outlet mall formula popular in the United States. At the other end of

Highway #2 is what must certainly be one of the most confusing and baffling retail developments in Alberta, South Edmonton Common. This thing squats on the south fringe of the city and according to the mall’s website, “South Edmonton Common is Canada’s largest retail power centre and when fully developed it will spread over 320 acres (130 ha) and contain some 2,300,000 square feet (210,000 m2) of retail space, making it the largest open-air retail development in North America.” It’s a sprawling mass of boxes, confusing roads and badly designed intersections with lots and lots of parking stalls. I’m not dumb, and the people who designed and built these developments aren’t dumb either. I guess they built these things because the market wanted them. What they don’t take into account though is the social and environmental costs of these monsters. People have to spend a lot of time behind the wheel to get to them, and get around in them.

These things take up huge amounts of real estate, contributing to sprawl. Then there’s the runoff problem. Both Edmonton and Calgary endlessly whine about flash flooding, runoff problems and washouts. If approving authorities and developers want to continue to pave millions of square feet, expect flash floods. The water used to go into the ground. Now it’s got nothing to do but flow. Then there’s the aesthetic value of the malls. Old Alberta Main Streets, with their family-owned stores and quaint appearances, now have to compete with these monstrous commercial blobs that have the emotional appeal of a highway off-ramp. Sadly, it seems this is just the beginning of the horrible U.S. style outlet mall mentality. CrossIron Mills won’t be alone for long. Horizon Mall, an Asianthemed outlet development that’s said to include room for 500 (!) vendors, broke ground last month right across the road from CrossIron Mills. It’s not clear how much land this thing will devour, but it

will need at least twice as much as CrossIron used. Will most of that be farmland? Then there’s Edmonton International Airport and its Premium Outlet Collection, an outlet mall currently under construction at the airport that’s said to include almost half a million square feet and about 100 vendors. The development was announced in 2013 and developers have boosted the size of the mall twice since then. Is another outlet mall roughly 15 minutes from South Edmonton Common really needed? Is more farmland in the Leduc County area threatened by sprawling retail development? Does the area need more asphalt parking lots and concrete slabs? All we can hope for, I guess, is that the municipalities we live in get decent tax revenue from these developments… enough to handle the flash flooding problem they’re contributing to. Stu Salkeld is the editor of The Pipestone Flyer and writes a regular column for the paper.

New rules regarding headgear for Olympic boxers cause for concern

Jonah Kondro

Production: Red Deer, Alberta Published every Tuesday by PNG Prairie Newspaper Group in community with: President: Mary Kemmis

I don’t care much for the Olympic Games. I’m sort of indifferent to the whole spectacle. However, I caught myself researching the 2016 Canadian Olympic boxing team. In my opinion, Canada is under represented in the sport of boxing. Three individuals are gloving up in Rio: Ariane Fortin, Arthur Biyarslanov, and Mandy Bujold. I would like to see

fifty people box for Canada during the Olympics, but I do have a bit of bias towards the sport. It’s been years since I boxed with the Rimbey club, but I still catch myself in the midst of a little kitchen shadow boxing every once and awhile. I have friends that ask if I’d ever consider training and competing as an amateur boxer again. My quick answer is that I have four fights and four wins and that I’d like to keep my meager record undefeated. But the real answer is that I don’t want to sustain any serious head (or other) injuries. Training and boxing competitively at the amateur level was hard on the body. I had my first doctor confirmed concussion as early as the fourth grade.

In high school, I was accidently struck in the side of the head by a nine-iron during a gym-class trip to the driving range. I had a concussion and stitches. During my early adulthood, I went into the hospital after my last competitive boxing bout because my head didn’t feel right. I’m leaving out a lot of other incidences in life where my head came into contact with something solid. I’ve had many minor and a few major head injuries—and I’m certainly not getting any smarter as a result. So when I was looking up who would be throwing punches for Canada in Rio, I was mildly upset to discover that the rules regarding headgear in the Olympics have changed. Apparently there won’t be

any headgear. The move follows the International Boxing Association’s 2013 decision to remove headgear from amateur boxing. I only boxed with the Rimbey club for two seasons and I can’t imagine what my mind would be like if I took all those punches without headgear. Moreover, there is some apparent scientific controversy over the actual effectiveness of wearing headgear and the occurrence of concussions while in the ring. Personally, I feel that the move away from protective headgear in Olympic boxing is a push to generate more competitors in the sport and, more interestingly, make the sport appealing to a larger fan base. The sport of boxing (as a whole) has certainly been

cast aside as the Ultimate Fight Championship (UFC) has propelled in popularity over the years. Those tough guys competing in the octagon aren’t wearing much for protective equipment and the fans go nuts when there is a ground and pound… Regardless of the possibility of concussions in boxing with or without headgear, there will undoubtedly be an increase in the occurrence of cuts without head protection. Blood draws a crowd. I’ve looked up some stats on our 2016 Olympic boxers and viewed some of their photographs. I don’t want to see Fortin, Biyarslanov, or Bujold receive any unnecessary injuries as a result of changes to the rules to draw a crowd.

Council receives draft copy of strategic plan BY TREENA MIELKE A strategic plan, drafted by the former acting CAO Donna Tona and presented to council at its July 25 meeting, will be revisited at this month’s meeting. Mayor Rick Pankiw said the document was accepted as information. “It needs to be broken down and written in plainer English,” he said. The plan was written to guide staff and the community as to the goals of council. It focuses on several key components including strong regional partnerships and recognizes the town’s mission of building a community known for its quality lifestyle. Keeping strong social networks through FCSS, Ponoka County and the Town of Ponoka is important, the plan states. Strategies to keep the partnerships strong include developing an inventory and understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing the people who live in Rimbey. It also includes exploring strategies to increase the number of youth, seniors and family in health-connected practices. Better choices do not mean more choices, Tona stated in the draft copy of the plan. “It means tailoring the choices to meet what suits Rimbey.” Choices in Rimbey mean great public health, productive economic development, recreation opportunities, choices for businesses to grow and land for developers to build people’s dreams. Rimbey’s identity stems from the rich historical and cultural roots that planted themselves from the early settlers who believed in the region and the land that the Rimbey’s settled and encouraged others to see their dream, the plan states. To continue nurturing this strategy, Tona suggests, in her draft plan, the town promote events, festivals and agriculture heritage that bring together Rimbey’s rich mosaic of culture, people and talent. She also suggests improving the look of streets, buildings and neighbourhoods and maintaining a clean and vigilant community through education, community involvement and community and policing agencies working together. “Rimbey will be a place where people celebrate each other, the natural landscape, cultural strengths, creative ingenuity, idea exchange and appreciate that a great lifestyle begins in Rimbey,” the draft states. Wise resource management is also important and focused and reasonable resource management is a responsible thing to do, the plan states. Wise management, as pointed out in the document, requires Rimbey to use its budgets responsibly. It involves better ways of keeping the community green through consultation. It involves encouragement and support for more energy efficient homes and civic buildings. To continue with wise resource management the draft plan suggests strategies such as planning for water conservation, planning to reduce the town’s waste through a waste management strategy, developing a green purchasing policy within reason and expanding on a ‘grow it local’ strategy. Economic development resource management strategies include working with developers to promote the protection and enhancement of green spaces, increasing natural landscaping that reflects the natural grasses and trees that can sustain themselves. The draft plan also focuses on taking action regarding the vision and mission of the Town of Rimbey. Recreation and community groups are also highlighted, as are FCSS and the Rimbey RCMP detachment. The 17-page document will be reviewed by council and discussed at its August meeting. CAO Lori Hillis said a public meeting was held June 29 to give the public an opportunity to provide input regarding the strategic plan. However, no one from the public was in attendance at the meeting.

RIMBEY REVIEW 7

Free Cultural Cafe concert to feature Zimbabwean musician SUBMITTED “The moment Munya strung his guitar he had the audience dancing… There was passion in his eyes and his smile reflected the joy in his heart at that very moment. He is not only talented but loves what he does and that goes further than just having talent.” So wrote a reviewer at a CD release concert for Jazz and traditional Zimbabwean musician Munya Mataruse. Rimbey Municipal Library and the Beatty Heritage House Society are excited to bring Munya to Rimbey to perform in concert at 7 pm, Friday August 12, as part of the Library’s Cultural Café focusing on Zimbabwe. With a grant from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, we are very happy to announce this is a free “all ages” event.

Munya was born in Norton, Zimbabwe which also happens to be the home of Afro music superstar Oliver Mtukudzi’s Pakare Paye Arts Centre, an institution devoted to nurturing Zimbabwean music and culture. Munya enrolled in the art programs at the Centre while in his teens. The teachers identified him early as a gifted performer; Munya excelled in traditional dance, lyrical composition, vocals, and instrumental arrangement. He specialized in guitar and percussion, in styles that express local traditional beats. As Mr. Mtukudzi’s (aka Tuku) protégé, Munya toured internationally with Tuku and has shared the stage with numerous Afro music giants. His musical style fuses Afro Jazz, Katekwe and Jiti, and is recognizable for its intensely catchy Zimbabwean melodies and smooth vocals. He has recorded three albums, available

We would like to express our heartfelt thank you to all the very special people of Rimbey who have been so caring and helpful after the passing of Bill Busch. We also extend a very special thank you to Laverne and Michelle of Oberhammer Funeral Chapel for their kindness and compassion shown to our family at this most difficult time.

for download on line. More recently on youtube you can see his unique cover versions of Western hits such as “Let Her Go” by Passenger, sung in Shona. His musical influences include Oliver Mtukudzi (of course!), Selif Keita, Johny Clegg, Bob Marley, and Sam Mtukudzi. This is a rare opportunity to hear vibrant, passionate music in an intimate house concert setting, performed by an artistically gifted performer. As the concert is free and seating is limited to 45 guests, get to the Beatty Heritage House (Main Street, Rimbey) early to claim your seat. The concert is Friday August 12th, at 7 pm (doors open at 6:30 pm). During the concert Munya and his guest will introduce us to Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwean Association of Alberta. Donations will be welcomed; cds will be available. For more information call Rimbey Library at 403-843-2841. See you there!

a field and evaded capture. The police continued patrols and not long after they found a male that matched the description walking around. After stopping to speak with the male, the police soon came to the belief that this was the suspect they were looking for. What were the clues? The physical description was a match, and he smelled of gasoline. It was determined that the male tried to siphon gas from a parked car in town. The male was charged with theft under $5,000 and is scheduled to appear in court on October 7. Over the past two months, Rimbey Mounties investigated 11 suspected impaired drivers. Of the 11 investigations, two people were charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The other incidents were deemed not to be impaired, or members were not able to intercept the drivers while they were on the road. A big thank you to all the public who supports the R.I.D. ini-

tiative by Reporting Impaired Drivers. We continue to encourage you to stop and call 911 if you suspect a driver is impaired. It is helpful if you can provide the following information to the police dispatchers: Vehicle description licence Plate number, colour, make/model), location, and direction of travel. The RCMP’s traffic safety focus for the month of August is Impaired Driving. Cannabis is second to alcohol as the drug most frequently found among drivers involved in crashes and drivers charged with impaired driving. Among young drivers, driving after using cannabis now exceeds the rate of driving after drinking (Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse). - In 2015, nearly half of all 24 hour licence suspensions were due to drug impairment. - In Alberta, 21 people were killed and 305 people were injured in drug-involved casualty collisions (2010-2014). - About 16 per cent of 15–24 year olds in Canada report riding as a passenger with a

driver who has smoked cannabis within the previous two hours (Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse). - In Canada, cannabis and depressant drugs each accounted for 29 per cent of all drug evaluations conducted in 2013 (International Association of Chiefs of Police, 2014). - A recent study by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation found in Alberta, 82 drivers (41 per cent) who were killed in collisions during 2012 tested positive for drugs. To put this in perspective, during this same year, 71 of the drivers tested positive for alcohol. Please do your part to report suspected impaired drivers, and help us keep the roads safe. Tips from the public help the RCMP to do their job. If you have any information regarding these or any other crimes, please call the local Rimbey RCMP Detachment at (403) 843-2224 or Crime Stoppers: PHONE: 1-800-2228477 #8477 on Telus Mobility *8477 on Rogers AT&T

Arena name change does not affect community centre’s name BY TREENA MIELKE

A senior from the Rimbey area who is worried that the community centre will be renamed can set her fears to rest. The senior, who wishes to remain anonymous, said she was concerned that the Peter Lougheed Community Centre will be renamed after reading an article in the Aug. 2 edition of the Rimbey Review. The article stated that the arena would be named the Vern Poffenroth Memorial Arena, in memory of the man who was the founding member of the Rimbey

Minor Hockey Association. The senior said she understood and respected the fact that Poffenroth played a major role in hockey in Rimbey. However, she was saddened, because she thought Peter Lougheed, the former premier of Alberta, was also worthy of recognition, and the community centre’s name would no longer recognize that fact. While Mayor Rick Pankiw confirmed that the information in the article is correct, he noted that it is the arena that is being given the new name, not the community centre.

“It is the Peter Lougheed Community Centre. There is no change to that,” he said. However, the arena, which is located on the north side of the community centre will receive the name, Vern Poffenroth Memorial Arena. Background information in the July 25 council package states Vern Poffenroth was the epitome of hockey in Rimbey. It states hockey in Rimbey would not be the same today, if it has not been for him. From father, coach and mentor, he lived hockey. The desired outcome, as

prepared and endorsed by Donna Tona, the former interim chief administrative officer, was to show recognition of service to a gentleman who lived and dreamed hockey in the community. Pankiw said it is a fitting memorial and noted the Poffenroth family has been notified and is pleased with council’s decision. He said Keyera was also notified and endorsed the proposal. The sign is to be erected in October and may coincide with the first Midget game of the season. The Poffenroth family will be invited to the unveiling.

A show ‘n shine and outdoor market will be part of the canal day festivities at Meridian Beach this year. The activities will be held at Meridian Beach Hall from 9 a.m. until noon, Aug. 20. Anyone who is interested in reserving a table for the market or wish to participate in the show ‘n shine with their car, truck or boat can contact Tonya Mckechnie at allmckechnie@shaw.ca or 403-669-7607. Mckechnie encourages the public to take part in these events, both of which promise to be fun and exciting for all. “The organizing committee decided to expand the canal days activities to include the show ‘n shine and the market this year in order to make the event bigger and better and give the public a chance to participate in the morning activities,” she said. This is the fourth annual year for canal days at Meridian Beach and it is proving to be very popular. “It is a great community builder and helps get everybody together,” said Mckechnie. As well as canoe races and other fun activities on Aug. 20, a family fun run is scheduled for Aug. 21.

Liberty Hall receives financial boost from Farm Credit Canada BY TREENA MIELKE Liberty Hall recently received a financial boost from a generous corporate donor who is constantly on the lookout for projects which will enhance the community in which they are situated. Farm Credit Canada donated $5,000 to Liberty Hall and the cheque was presented to Dariel Sroka, a Liberty Hall board member, by Dale Johnston, chairman of Farm Credit, Canada. Johnston said in 2015 Farm Credit Canada donated $180,000 to communities across Alberta for projects that would enhance communities where Farm Credit customers live and work. Projects included building an outdoor skating rink in Strathmore, purchasing new fire equipment in Irma and Rayoman, contributing towards a new playground in Fahler and giving financial support to community halls in Breton and Cassils. “And now we have contributed here in Ponoka County,” said Johnston, noting that a great deal of sweat equity has gone into this project. Liberty Hall was built in 1921 as a temporary structure. Now, almost a century later, the hall is not only still standing, it is a busy place, housing many activities, including the ever popular Springdale Players annual dinner theatre. But, even though the dinner theatre is alive and well and other activities including reunions, picnics, dinners and exercise classes are held at the hall, the facility is tired and old. The roof leaks badly, the water and sewer pipes freeze every winter, the kitchen is not up to commercial qualifications and operational costs continue to rise. The new hall is to be built on the same site as the original one and is to be approximately the same size.

RIMBEY REVIEW 13

Rimbey Lions Rock ‘n Rimbey will be held Aug. 27 and promises fun and excitement for everyone.

Treena Mielke Photo

Rimbey Lions presents Rock’n Rimbey BY TREENA MIELKE Saturday, August 27 promises to be a rockin’ good time in Rimbey as the Lions Club rolls out the red carpet for locals and guests alike with their Rock’n Rimbey fun day. “We’re excited,” said Terry Von Hollen, who co-chairs the rock’n Rimbey committee with Suella Brodie. “We want to promote Rimbey and bring something new to town. It’s going to be great and all indications are that it is very well received.” The day will begin with a pancake breakfast to be held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre from 9 to 11 a.m. And after everyone has had their fill of the delicious breakfast, a show and shine will be held in the paved parking lot of the Peter Lougheed Community Centre. This event is open to all cars, trucks, motorcycles. This event promises to be fun and exciting and there

will be several door prizes. Trophies and prizes will be presented at 3 p.m. Spectators need to come check out this show and shine as there will, no doubt, be vehicles from far and wide. There is no charge to come and take a look at the wide array of cars and trucks on display. Following the show and shine a car rally will be held on a paved course in the Rimbey area. This is open to any street legal vehicles and there are several prizes to be won. There is to be no motorcycles in this event and the limit is 40 vehicles. The day continues to rock on with car cruises (Gull Lake circle tours) to be held from 4 to 6 p.m. There is a limit of 30 vehicles for this event. And motorcycles will also have their turn during this time frame with bike cruises happening. These are to take place from Eckville and/or Sylvan and back. This event is limited to 30

bikes. The day will wrap up with cocktails/supper at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre with a cash bar, and a catered, buffet supper. And finally a rock’n roll dance will be held from 8 to 11 at the community centre. Music will be by On the Mark Production and the evening promises a great

time of dancing, fun and socializing. Tickets are available from any Rimbey Lions member, or at Whitgan Creation, or Stationery, Stories and Sound. All day passes which provides access to everything are available. The Lions Club really wants the community to get involved in this event

and businesses are encouraged to adopt the rock ‘n roll theme and dress up their businesses accordingly. Prizes will be handed out. Throughout the day guided tours will be provided so visitors can learn about Rimbey and appreciate what the community has to offer.

This year is the first Rock ‘n Rimbey event and Von Hollen is hopeful it will catch on and grow and become an annual event. “We want people to put this on their calendar of events as must go to, this year and in years to come,” he said. For more information call Terry at 403-358-8141.

Parish Priest: Father Les Drewicki Administration Offi ce: 403-843-2126;

During my last week of holidays I was fortunate to have all six of my grandchildren leave their own special and unique footprint on the yet to be discovered landscape of every new day. It was awesome. And as each child burst through my front door, they immediately, in their own way, turned my adult, sometimes staid and ridiculously serious world into a kaleidoscope of crazy. It was fun. It was messy, it was disorganized. It was happy, it was sad and,

most of all, it was busy. Very busy. I loved it, and, incidentally, so did their grandpa, after he recovered from the initial shock of not being able to smoke in the house and being required to lend his woodworking talent to the building of four birdhouses all at once. Originally, I had this vision of how I wanted this grandchildren’s visit to happen. I wanted to have at least one day when I had them all together and we would do grandparents/ grandchildren things as a group. I even made a list. In my vision, my house would be a happy place where laughter bounced off the walls and cousins bonded like crazy glue. We would have ice cream. Later, we would watch the stars and find constellations like the Big Dipper and The Little Dipper and Orion’s Belt. As it turned out, the bonding like crazy glue thing didn’t happen because they didn’t all come at once. They came at

different times and went home at different times. But the best and most delightful and most important thing is, they came. They all came. And, after they had hung around for a bit, they started to open up and tell us stuff. Confidential stuff. “Jacob likes watermelon best and grandpa second,” the seven-year-old told me in all seriousness, speaking about his two-year-old brother. We were sitting out on the deck among the flowers, and he was gobbling up a bowl of ice cream, scooping it up quite happily as he chatted. And when the five-yearold and I secretly shared a chocolate cupcake in the kitchen, the child gave me a dazzling smile that I swear will keep me warm all winter long. “Grandma, we shared an unhealthy snack,” he said, conspiratorially, licking his chocolate covered lips. On the last night of my holidays, the two oldest grandchildren and my

husband and I built a fire in the backyard and had a wiener roast. The discussion ranged from politics to education to parents to music to whether s’mores tasted better when the marshmallow was burned beyond recognition or just cooked to a slightly golden brown. I didn’t care what we talked about. I just cared that they were there, sitting with us, their grandparents, while the fire slowly burned itself up and a soft and gentle veil of darkness slowly fell over us all. The week is over now. The kids have all gone back to their respective families and I have gone back to work. And after all is said and done, one thing I know for sure. Each and every one of those children made my summer just a little better, a little richer and whole lot more meaningful just because they took one moment in time and shared it with me. It was the best gift ever!

Wildrose says NDP going against Albertans with out-of-touch lawsuit SUBMITTED EDMONTON, AB (July 26, 2016): The NDP government has shown a new side of their anti-business agenda by launching an unnecessary lawsuit against Enmax, an energy company owned by Calgarians, the Wildrose Official Opposition said today. The returning of Power Purchasing Arrangements (PPAs) to the balancing pool was entirely preventable and foreseen by both the Wildrose and key en-

ergy stakeholders in the province, and should have been understood by the NDP government before changing the carbon levy under the SGER. “At the end of the day the launch of this lawsuit shows the NDP government’s blatant disregard for covenants, business sense, respect for taxpayer dollars, and knowledge of how our electricity system works,” Wildrose Leader Brian Jean said. “The NDP government is taking on a lengthy and costly court case against an energy

company owned by the people of Calgary. It just doesn’t add up.” Rather than launching a lawsuit to cover up the poor planning done to date by the NDP government on the electricity file, they should be sitting down with energy companies to find a collaborative pathway towards a sustainable electricity market. “The NDP government needs to face the facts and drop this frivolous lawsuit. If it wasn’t for their mishandling of the energy file, their abrupt and

ideological change to SGER after one month in office, and their accelerated coal phase out, we wouldn’t be in this current situation,” Wildrose Shadow Electricity and Renewables Minister Don MacIntyre said. “At the end of the day, Wildrose will be on the side of everyday Albertans, and that means working collaboratively with our energy companies in the best interests of Albertans, not slapping lawsuits down and whining about the consequences of irresponsible policy.”

Investment practices differ between men and women BY KIM INGLIS A c c o r d i n g to Fi d e l i t y Investments, women want to get more engaged with their finances within the next year. Specifically, 92 per cent want to learn about financial planning and 75 per cent want to become better versed in investing. These are encouraging numbers. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, confidence is a leading factor holding women back from actually following through. Fidelity reports that only 47 per cent are confident talking money and investments with a professional and 80% confess they have refrained from having financial conversations with their loved ones. Interestingly, the women who do follow through and get more involved with their finances tend to be better investors than their male counterparts. A study done by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) found a number of key differences in the way men and women invest that helps explain why. The study found that women have less tolerance for risk. They tend to have more balanced portfolios; with a

greater allocation to cash equivalents and fixed income investments. Because of the conservative weightings, their portfolios are less volatile. Women also like to purchase stocks in companies they know and understand, mostly opting for blue-chip investments. Investment attitudes are also very different. According to the study, women are more likely than men to find investment decisions stressful and difficult, and less likely to describe themselves as knowledgeable. Therefore they are inclined to do much more research prior to investing and want to know all the details when looking at something new. Having conducted in-depth research, women tend to be less impulsive than their male counterparts and once their plan has been set in motion they tend to stick to it. This discipline is particularly evident when women are working toward specific investment goals. They hold their investments for longer periods of time and thus benefit from lower fees because there are fewer transactions. These characteristics suggest

women inherently possess “the right stuff” for successful investing. However the FINRA study showed they are less likely to invest regularly or to start early in life. Where men become involved with investing gradually over a period of time, women often don’t begin until forced by major life events like death or divorce. Because these women could be solely responsible for their own finances in the future, they should be preparing now for that possibility. One way is to work jointly with their partners in current investment decisions and plan as though they might someday be on their own. They can further develop investing skills by having their own retirement accounts in which they make independent portfolio decisions assisted by a professional. RIMBEY REVIEW 19

Never leave children in hot cars SUBMITTED Never leave your children unattended in the heat It’s an act of convenience that can kill. Every summer, EMS and other first response agencies respond to calls, across the province, where children have been left inside vehicles while their parent, or caregiver, “quickly ran inside”. According to experts, there is no safe amount of time to leave a child unattended in a vehicle in the heat. One study found that in 35ºC weather it took just twenty minutes for the interior temperature of a car to rise to 50ºC. Unlike adults, children’s bodies aren’t adapted to cool them rapidly. As a result, they are more susceptible to heat-related illness and injuries, even death. It takes only minutes for tragedy to strike but just seconds to prevent it. • Never leave a child alone in a vehicle, even for just a few minutes. • Always check the interior of the vehicle before you lock it to ensure you haven’t left your child behind. • Lock your vehicle when it’s not in use so children can’t get in without you knowing. • If you see a child left unattended in a vehicle, call 911 immediately and, if possible, get the child out as quickly as you can. It may seem more convenient to not have to fuss with a car seat or seat belt for a quick stop but a hot car is no place for a child. Save a life, not time.
