A very good summer for tourism Numbers are up and that’s good news C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
If you have noticed that Kimberley seems busier this summer, you are not mistaken. Kimberley is having a very good summer in terms of tourism, says Jesse Ferguson of Tourism Kimberley. “It’s been really busy,” Ferguson said. “From what we are tracking we are noticing a big increase. Last summer was a good year too, but this year, just in terms of people walking through the door of the Visitors’ Centre,
we are seeing a 25 per cent increase. The hotel spend so far this summer — that’s how much money is spent on hotels — is 16.6 per cent up.” There are many things you can attribute the growth to, Ferguson says, some Tourism Kimberley can control, and others they can’t. “First and foremost we’ve been promoting our new Kimberley branding plan for four years now. When we started the plan, we knew it would take time. We are starting to see it pay off.” Another factor is the American dollar, but not in the way you Inquiries about mountain bik- might think. CITY LABOUR NEGOTIATIONS
Still distance on key issues C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
With negotiations stalled, and mediation having failed, the City of Kimberley and the United Steelworkers are now headed to a membership vote on the last offer. There has been some movement, but key issues continue to trouble the Union, said a USW press release. One of the those is the S.E.S. Job Evaluation System. The City considers it a failed experiment

that leads to inequity between departments, while the Union says its removal would allow the employer to change jobs, descriptions and duties as they see fit without any recourse for the employee to have the position fairly evaluated. “The current job evaluation system compares positions internally, but there are no comparisons to other municipalities,” said the City press release. “The Union is seeking to have Aquatic

Centre positions run through the S.E.S. system, which would result in significantly higher wage costs to run the aquatic centre. “As a substitute to the job evaluation system, the City has offered a wage grid based off of the results of the job evaluation system, and has offered to meet with the Union to discuss a rate of pay for any new or significantly revised jobs,”said the city release. A look behind the lens, to the lensman
Cranbrook photographer Joel Robison talks about his craft, his art and his travels
but as I look at it at the end, I can see how it relates to what’s going on in my life or what I’m thinking about. I love that about conceptual photography, it tells a story that is up to the viewer to decipher. Q. How do you start putting a concept photo together?
T R E VO R C R AW L E Y
Joel Robison, a local expat who now resides in London while pursuing his photography passion, recently returned home for a visit with family and friends. During his all-too-brief sojourn back to his hometown, he hosted a walk through the downtown core, offering advice and guidance to a host of local photographers of abilities. What began as a hobby for Robison has turned into a full-time career that has taken him to photo assignments across the world, most notably the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour — a ninemonth saga that took him to 84 countries as the official photographer. More recently, his work was featured in the July issue of The Oprah Magazine, where he was tasked with illustrating the ‘big books of summer’. Joel graciously agreed to share some insight on his development as an artist and photography as an art form with the Cranbrook Townsman. Q. The FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour was the opportunity of a lifetime. How did that experience of travelling the world and plying your craft help you grow as a photographer and artist? I think it really changed my photography for the better. Before this trip I was very concentrated on creating stories and “created” moments with my photography. I was spending a lot of time coming up with ideas, making and building props and supplies and spending many hours on each photograph. On the tour, everything was real-time and I had to look for the stories as they were happening. I had to rely purely on my eye to catch the moments and not to rely on editing to back them up. It really helped me connect with people and with my surroundings in a brand new way. Q. What style or setting do you enjoy shooting the most and why? I’d say that my favourite is always shooting portraits with other creative people
HOUSELOVE, BY JOEL ROBISON because there is a certain electric energy that starts to build when creative people work together. I like to challenge myself as well and I’ve been trying to photograph more landscapes and street photography as well, mostly as a way to document my every day life so that i can look back at the images and be reminded of what I see.
I’ve done with my teaching programs as well; being able to teach and assist other photographers build their creative voices is such a huge enjoyment for me and I love watching people grow and become successful.
Q. What projects or assignments are you particularly proud of?
The best camera is the one you have with you and I definitely think you can create some really impressive work with any type of camera. For me my essentials are a sturdy tripod, a remote control for my camera, and a memory card with wifi (I like to start looking at images right away on my phone). As far as software, I stick to Photoshop mostly for all my editing, with a bit of extra work done in Lightroom.
I’ve been so lucky to have had some really amazing opportunities with my photography, certainly traveling the world with Coca-Cola and FIFA will always be the biggest highlight of my photography journey but I would say I’m also really proud of the work I’ve done getting my work onto book covers and album covers with publishing agencies around the world. It’s such a thrilling and exciting feeling to see my work in a bookstore or a library in a far away country. I’m really proud of the work
Q. On the topic of equipment and software, any essential pieces of gear?
Q. Any advice for people who are interested in getting into photography? Do it! Photography is such an incredible opportunity to share your view on
the world with other people, and for me the best part about it is the community that exists around it. There are people all over the world that are getting together, sharing their work, learning and teaching each other and it’s amazing to be a part of. It’s a hobby and a profession for me but it’s also something that I love to do because it helps me connect with the world around me and has rewarded me with some of the best experiences, people and memories I could ever ask for! Q. Everyone’s got a smartphone with a camera now. Is that diluting photography as an art form or growing it? I think it’s amazing to see so many people expressing themselves with it. There’s a huge community of people online using platforms like Instagram to share their unique view on the world and it’s such a great opportunity to do that. I think that there will always be people that feel very protective about photography as an art
and they will continue to create using their techniques and voices but I think that it’s an opportunity for us all to share how different we are and how we can connect with each other. Q. Photography in itself is an art form, but the conceptual images takes it to another level. How did you get into developing that aspect? Conceptual Photography is my favourite form of expression because I feel like it allows me to visualize the thoughts, fears, goals, worries and everything else in my head that I can’t quite seem to get into words. I started by just taking random words, objects or themes and trying to show that in a slightly different way. As I started developing my own voice and my style I started unlocking these doors in my creativity that started to allow me to easily translate experiences and ideas into visuals quite clearly. Sometimes I’ll create an image that I don’t know where it came from
I have two very different approaches to creating an image. One method is very formulated, I’ll meditate or brainstorm ideas on a piece of paper and write down any visuals that seem to be at the front of my mind. Then I’ll start building the idea based on those visuals and the locations I have available to me (and the weather of course). Then I’ll go out and start shooting, it’s very controlled and I usually finish shooting the images within a few minutes because I know exactly what I want and need. The other method is much more free in it’s creation, I’ll just grab some things that I like and put them in my bag and head out to a location that I like and see what happens, sometimes it’s a bit like an abstract painter creating on a canvas. I’ll start just taking photos seeing where it all goes and sometimes it works out and I end up with something that I really like and sometimes it doesn’t end up going anywhere but I still feel like I’ve learned something and that I’ve exercised my creative mind. Q. Describe the process you went through to create the photo you’ve chosen [pictured here]. For this image I went through a fairly simple process. The models in the photo are two of my friends, both incredibly talented artists themselves and they’ve been dating long distance for several years. Bella lives in the UK and Pratik lives in the USA. They frequently travel together but spend most of the year apart, we planned to meet in the UK and I wanted to create an image that showed their connection and love for each other even though they’re often in different places in the world. I started writing down visuals and the word house came up and I remembered seeing a cardboard house at a craft store and I thought maybe I could connect their love with the smoke coming out of the chimneys. We met in Oxford and the shoot was over in a few minutes!

Cranbrook veteran receives Legion of Honour award BARRY COULTER AND TRE VOR CR AWLEY
A Cranbrook veteran was enrolled in a select international group Saturday, August 13. Lee Brown, who at 18 flew with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War, was recognized and honoured by the government of France, for his services in fighting for freedom. At a ceremony at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 24 Cranbrook, Brown was made a Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour (Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur) and presented with the medal by Antoine Mention, Deputy Consul with the Consulate General of France, located in Vancouver. Mention addressed Brown and the delegates on behalf of the French government, referencing the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights — a list of 30 rights to which every human being is inherently entitled to. It’s especially significant to France, as the declara-
nadian membership into the Legion of Hon-

eign soil, far away from your country, to help the people of Europe to free themselves from terror and tyranny,” said Mention. “Your accomplishments during the Second World War, are a vibrant reminder of the profound and historic friendship that binds France and Canada. Our two countries owe each
other our very existence.” Brown joins some prestigious company with the Legion of Honour, as the recognition has been bestowed on Canadians such as former Governor General Michaelle Jean, former Prime Minister William Mackenzie King, and former Quebec Premier Jean Charest. Mention also added that the Ca-
Summer of labour unrest From page 1 But, says the Union, the current job evaluation system will be stripped from the collective agreement, replaced by language that forces members to accept whatever changes to the position are placed upon it and the rate which is determined by the employer, with no input by the employee or the union. “In the first year wage increases of 18 per cent plus will go to one position; two other positions will get 9 per cent; a large portion of the membership will get 1.5 per cent while the Parks and Facilities department will receive 1 per cent” Not fair, the union says. The City says the 1.5 per cent is offered to the majority of unionized workers. “After surveying 20 similar-sized municipalities, the City has discovered that the parks and recreation staff are paid 4 per cent above the municipal av-

erage and therefore are only offering a 1per cent increase in this department. The engineering department was determined to be 9% per cent below average, and the building inspector was being paid 18 per cent less than the municipal average. In order to be able to compete to attract and retain these positions, the City has offered greater increases to reflect market realities. The City was unable to fill the building inspector position for several months, which resulted in delays to new construction.” The City has offered to extend Special Vacation to the 6 permanent aquatic centre staff. The Union also wants this benefit extended to current seasonal and casual employees, in the event that they become permanent employees. The Special Vacation benefit consists of an extra 15 days of vacation for every 5 years of service, on top of the annual vacation entitle-
ments. The City’s position is that the Special Vacation is no longer financially sustainable, and would see it phased out while not affecting any current permanent employees’ vacation benefits. The union counters that this creates an unacceptable two-tiered vacation benefit between current employees and new ones. “Again, money is not an issue,” said Jeff Bromley from the Steelworkers. “But to start dividing us is unacceptable.” The City will be sending its final offer directly to employees, and asking them to vote directly in a closed ballot on whether to accept or reject it. However Steelworkers Local 1-405 is advising its members to vote no. “The USW Bargaining Committee is strongly recommending rejection of the offer. “If accepted, the last offer from the employer
becomes the new collective agreement for USW members at the City of Kimberley. “Clearly, the employer is using a divide and conquer tactic in order to force concessions upon our membership. Your USW Bargaining Committee has a clear mandate from the membership to bargain a fair collective agreement and not have one forced upon us.” “The bargaining mandate set by council seeks to strike a balance between the accountability to residential and businesses taxpayers, the City’s $73M infrastructure deficit, and what council sees as a fair offer to the employees,” the City says. “In the event of a labour disruption, management staff will be working to ensure public safety and to provide the best possible service under difficult circumstances.”

LOCAL NEWS Kimberley Ladies Busy tourist season so far golf report
From Page 1 “People would assume that we would see a big increase in American visitors, and we are seeing more American tourists, but the big factor is, fewer people are going to the States. They are staying in Canada and lot of them are coming here. “Then there’s the whole oil crisis in Alberta. The prediction was that Albertans wouldn’t travel, but that didn’t prove true. What’s true is they are travelling, but these people that might have flown to Vancouver and golfed Whistler — these guys are not spending as much. They come here. It’s one third the price
and the quality is great. Word is getting around about that. Kimberley has awesome golf and is a really good value. The other big market that is growing every year is adventure tourism, especially mountain bikers. “It’s huge,” Ferguson said. “By far our biggest request at the Visitor Centre is for trail maps and mountain bike rentals.” Having high profile events such as the Single Track 6 come through Kimberley is invaluable as well, he says. “Single Track 6 is a huge, inter-
national event. When people hear that it was in Kimberley, they think, ‘Kimberley must be worth riding’.” As the summer season winds down, Tourism Kimberley turns its attention to the coming winter, booking ski shows — mainly in Canada, but a few in the northwest U.S. as well. “Last winter was pretty good, quite a lot ahead of the previous winter, although you will remember that winter was a low snow year. But we had a very strong winter. Over the December to March season, the hotel spend was up 20 per cent.”

I am a bit behind on my planned monthly reports regarding the Ladies Day results so this is a bi-monthly report for June and July. There are just too many things to do in our beautiful area. With all the choices of hiking, biking, festivals, markets to name a few and entertaining out of town guests, and of course golfing; there just isn’t enough time in the day. We change up the prize holes monthly putting a little bit of a different twist on the front nine holes. For the month of June the prize holes were 2, 5, and 8 along with 2 Low Nets, Random Draw and of course the elusive Deuce Pot. June 7th was convened by Rose Souter and Karen Mummery and the winners were Bev Chlopan for Closest to Pin First Shot onto Green on Hole 2, Longest Putt on #5 went to Gene Harrington, In the Sand Draw on #8 was Ellen Phelps, First Low Net was Ria House, Second Low Net was Debbie Maclean, Jeanette Lavoie won the Random Draw and Elaine Dereniwsky walked away with the third in a row win of the Deuce Pot.

walking away with 2nd Low Net and Random Draw. The Deuce Pot was again won with Nancy Fraser as the happy recipient. June 21st was convened by Debbie Maclean and Barb Kadin. The only winners that day were Florence West for In the Sand Draw on #8, First Low Net was Carol McCrady, Second Lot Net was Flo Brokop, Esther Jacobson won the Random Draw. June 28th was convened by Barb Thompson and Elaine Dereniwsky. Winners for that day were Karen Mummery for Closest to Pin First Shot onto #2, Laura Millard for Longest Putt on #5, Low Net was Bev Chlopan and Second Low Net was Rosemarie Schrocker. We had three Random Draws for the day which went to Marg Sutter, Barb Thompson and Betty McNish. Barb Thompson also walked away with the Deuce Pot. The prize holes were changed up a bit for July and putts were counted. July 5th was convened by Debra Krantz and Ria House. Nancy Fraser won Closest to Pin first Shot onto #6, Longest Putt on #8 went to Gena Harrington, Fewest Putts through the front nine won by Jan Boychuk, First Low Net was Nancy Fraser and Second Lot Net was Gena Harrington. It may look like only Nancy and Gena played that day, but for sure, we did have lots of ladies partaking. Their clubs were really
good to them that day. The Random Draw was won by Peggy Sorkilmo and the Deuce Pot stayed safely tucked away to accumulate. More to follow on that story. July 12th was our annual fund raising day and as reported in a previous article, we were successful in raising $500 plus approximately $300 worth of food items for Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank. Conveners for the day were Debra Krantz and Susan Osterkampf. Winners for the regular Ladies Day Front Nine were Jan Boychuk for Closest to the Pin First Shot onto #6, Jo-Ann Allan for Longest Putt on #8, Debbie Maclean won the Fewest Putts, Esther Jacobson took First Low Net and Linda Jones took Second Lot Net. Random Draw was won by Candace Carson. Deuce Pot again stayed safely tucked away and getting more elusive. July 19th conveners were Esther Jacobson and Judy Caron. Winners were Ria House for Closest to the Pin First Shot onto #6, Linda Jones for Longest Putt on #8, Fewest Putts went to Monique Van Engelen, First Low Net went to Linda Jones, Second Low Net won by Jo-Ann Allan, Random Draw won by Rosemarie Schrocker. And as promised the story about the Deuce Pot was won that day by Linda Jones. I had one of those rare good games. Moving on to July 26th saw Jeannette Lavoie and Gena Harrington convening. Winners were Closest to the Pin First Shot onto #6 went to June Bottessi, Longest Putt on #8 was Sheri Schacher, Fewest Putts through Front Nine went to Judy Caron as well Judy won the First Low Net. Second Low Net went to Sandy Peters and Random Draw won by Joy Stephenson. The Deuce Pot was not won. Our group had a pretty successful and busy last two months and looking forward to the next two months which will end with wind-up towards end of September.

Legion of Honour One fatality in Radium accident From Page 3 Mr. Brown, in front of family, friends and a large gathering at the Legion, said that he was accepting the honour on behalf of the crews of the two aircraft he flew with — 12 airmen in all. “I’m saying thanks, but this is on behalf of 12 men who are not here that I flew with. Two different crews because one man can’t do anything in those planes by themselves. I had two different crews, so if you break it down, that’s 12 different men and myself. “They have their unwritten name on this with me, believe me, so think about them. Thank you.” The Legion of Honour, created in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, is the highest French order for military and civil merits, and be awarded regardless of class, gender or nationality. Monsieur Mention noted that it is on the same level as the Order of Canada in this country. “This is the highest award that can be given to foreign persons. Its given either for great action for great, or great accomplishment for France. It can be awarded on military grounds, but it can also be given to an artist — any kind of matter. But it is an award recognizing a person’s deeds on behalf of France.” During the presentation, Mention said France had set out on an “unprecedented” two-year project to present
the Legion of Honour to living Allied soldiers from the D-Day campaign, June, 1944. “It is very simple,” he elaborated in an interview prior to the ceremony. “The France government decided in 2014 to award the Légion d’honneur to all Canadian, American — all foreign soldiers who fought for the liberation of France in 1944. It’s been given to all those soldiers who are still alive. So far, in two years, it has been awarded to more than 1,000 Canadian veterans. Unfortunately, many died, but still about 1,000 are alive, and have got this medal. “And the reason I am here today is that the Canadian Legion in Cranbrook asked the French consulate in Vancouver to come to Cranbrook to award Mr. Brown the medal. “He was 18 in 1944, and put his life at risk for French freedom. We decided to come to pay our tribute to him and the men who put their lives as risk. Many died to preserve freedom, and it’s important to show how grateful we are. That we will never what they did. Today, I am able to live in a free country, France, because of what people like Mr. Brown did.” Mr. Brown flew more than 30 missions with the RCAF, including diversion flights, acting as decoy to draw enemy aircraft away from Allied troops.
On 2016-08-14 at 11 :40 hrs (MST) a fatal motor vehicle collision occurred on Hwy 93/95, near Dry Gulch, south of Radium, B.C. The collision occurred when a southbound Toyota Rav4, carrying six persons, failed to respond to changing conditions. The Rav4 was following several vehicles in a line when the vehicles travelling in front slowed to allow one vehicle to
make a legal left hand tum. Realizing he would not be able to stop, the driver of the Toyota Rav4 drove onto the soft shoulder passing three vehicles on the right, to avoid a collision. After passing the three vehicles, the driver of the Rav4 attempted to pull the vehicle back onto the travel portion of the roadway but lost control of his vehicle. The Toyota Rav4, crossed the centre line,
dividing the lanes of north and southbound travel, directly into the path of a northbound Chrysler 200, carrying four persons. The collision resulted in the death of a 59 year old female who was seated in the front passenger seat of the Rav4. The driver of the Rav4 sustained serious but nonlife threatening injuries. A total of nine persons were transported to hos-
pital in Invermere. Eight of those persons were later air lifted to Calgary Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The collision is being investigated by East Kootenay Traffic Services. Police remind everyone of the importance of wearing properly adjusted seatbelts when travelling on the highways this summer.

80 years On: Is 2016 the new 1936? Hegel remarks somewhere that all great world-historic facts and personages appear, so to speak, twice. He forgot to add: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce. Karl Marx, 1852
We
would all prefer a farce to a tragedy, so let us hope that Marx was right. But he has been wrong a few times in the past, so we must entertain the possibility that what awaits us is tragedy. The “first time”, in this instance, was the 1930s, when the painfully slow recovery from a global financial crash led to political polarisation, beggar-my neighbour trade wars, and the rise to power of anti-democratic, ultra-nationalist leaders in a number of countries. The consequences included the Second World War, death camps, the first and only use of nuclear weapons, and forty years of Cold War. Well, we had our global financial crash in 2008, and the recovery has certainly been slow. Average incomes in many Western countries have still not recovered to pre-2008 levels, and the growth of nationalist and racist sentiment is evident in major countries like Britain (the Brexit vote), France (the rise of the National Front), and above all the United States (Trump). The wave of non-violent democratic revolutions that transformed so many developing countries at the end of the Cold War ended with the failure of the “Arab Spring”, leaving a new dictatorship in Egypt and civil wars across the Middle East. In parts of Asia the process has even gone into reverse (military rule in Thailand,
death squads run by populist elected governments in the Philippines and Indonesia). Authoritarian, ultra-nationalist governments hostile to the European Union have come to power in post-Communist Eastern Europe (Fidesz in Hungary, the Law and Justice government in Poland). And a trade war is brewing between the United States and China no matter who wins the US election in November. You could add to the list of worries a new ruler in China (Xi Jinping) who is more autocratic and readier to play the nationalist Gwynne card than any other Chinese leader since Mao, Dyer and a Japanese prime minister (Shinzo Abe) who promises to remove the anti-war clause from the constitution. Not to mention that addict to high-stakes international brinkmanship, Russia’s Vladimir Putin. Quite a list, but does it really mean that we are back in 1936 (fascists in power in Germany, Italy and Japan, civil war in Spain, the Great Purge in the Soviet Union), with the catastrophe of global war just three years away? Or is it just a grab-bag of local problems, failures and worries of the sort that are bound to exist in a world of almost 200 independent countries? Probably the latter. Right- and left-wing parties are a legitimate and inevitable part of any democratic society, but they both tend to spin off or mutate into more extreme and paranoid versions of themselves in times of economic hardship. It is difficult to argue, however, that the times are really that bad at the moment. Times are very hard in most developed
countries for the old working class, who have been left behind by globalisation, and that is where most of the support for rightwing extremism comes from. But there really aren’t enough of them to take over the state: Trump will not win in November, the National Front will not win next year’s French election, and the Brexiteers in Britain — well, that remains to be seen. The Middle East is a disaster area, of course, but it is a pretty isolated disaster area, apart from occasional small-scale terrorist outrages in Western countries. To live in fear of a world-wide Islamic caliphate is as delusional as to hope for it. Democracy is not in retreat in Africa or Latin America, and the pluses and the minuses more or less balance out in Asia (military rule in Thailand and more authoritarian elected governments in the Philippines and Indonesia, but more democracy in Burma and Sri Lanka). Nor should we see the triumph of a couple of ultra-nationalist parties in traditionally nationalist Eastern European countries as a sign of things to come in the rest of Europe. This is not to say that the European Union will survive in the long term without major changes. We are going through a historic shift of the centre of gravity of the global economy from the North Atlantic world to Asia, and many things will have to change as a result. It is possible that the United States and China might stumble into a military confrontation at some point: that risk is implicit in the kind of power shift that is underway in the early 21st century. But we are not on the brink of any great and awful calamity in the world. It is not 1936. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist based in London

OPINION/EVENTS LETTERS to the EDITOR
Stan Salikin
I am sure I speak for many Kimberleyites when I say I was saddened and dismayed to hear that our beloved Stan Salikin was planning on moving to Vancouver Island. Now I am stunned to learn of his passing. My husband and I met Stan about 19 years ago, upon first moving to Kimberley, when we would frequent the MacLeod’s Hardware (alternating our business between it and Bavarian Hardware!). As renters of a whole house, after having lived in nothing but apartments for the previous 10 years, we certainly needed his guidance and expertise, always delivered with a big smile. When he retired we wondered if we would be seeing much of him. Obviously we had no reason to worry, and it has been great pleasure to see him around town in his many endeavours, particularly in his hard work with the Food Bank. I was always impressed how he remembered everyone’s name, – he even recalled that in 2006 I had won first prize in the Duck Race! Inasmuch as Bob McWhinney (also deeply missed) was the Voice of Kimberley, Stan Salikin was the Heart of Kimberley. Your incredible contribution to Kimberley, Stan, exemplified all that is great about our town. You will terribly missed, and I hope that we as a community can rise to meet the example you have set for us. Michelle B. Fuchs
Inquiry
As a Ktunaxa taxpayer in Canada, I have lived and overcame some of the challenges that my people face every day, including poverty, addiction, discrimination, etc. I raised my two sons without child support payments from their mother. I also hold two university degrees — one being a law degree. I graduated from UBC law school one year after our Attorney General of Canada, Jody Wilson-Ribald. Our Attorney General of Canada, being Aboriginal herself, showed us all that Aboriginal people belong among Canada’s top political brass too. She helped set up the terms and conditions of the upcoming Murdered and Missing Aboriginal Women’s Inquiry. But I truly wonder if this inquiry is really going to be any different from that of Wally Oppal’s B.C. Murdered and Missing Aboriginal Women’s Inquiry? Will the recommendations from this inquiry sit on the shelf next to all the other past recommendations
on Aboriginal people? Will the $50 million being spent on this inquiry give us more than a foregone conclusion? And since this inquiry is looking at root problems, why aren’t we placing any focus on Aboriginal “Chiefs and Band Councils?” They too have some explaining to do, and not doubt, some apologies to give to these murdered and missing Aboriginal women (and their families). A Chief and Band Council’s apathy, discrimination and lateral violence towards some of their own people happens every day in Canada — I lived and overcame that too. So, I would bet the entire $50 million that some of the murdered and missing Aboriginal women had issues with their won Chief and Band Council, and that should be the starting point of the inquiry. Robert W. Louie Creston
Cranbrook kudos
I would like to commend the City of Cranbrook authorities who have had the vision and the workers who have laboured to implement the many projects that beautify and improve our city. Seeing all the positive changes being addressed at last fills my heart with hope for the future of Cranbrook. Well done to all of you; from the Mayor and councillors to the students who have worked tirelessly. We appreciate your courage and hard work! Thank you. Mal Paterson
Pets, tenants and landlords
I was very pleased to see the letter from Helene Duarte re the Renters who will not accept pets. I realize that there are pet owners who do not take full responsibility for their pets but those that do are being discriminated against. Seniors, especially, need to be able to keep their pets with them as they provide companionship and comfort to each other. Premier Red Green’s fast fixes
C
omedian Steve Smith, better known as Red Green, is touring B.C. in September, reprising his popular TV series in which he fixes every conceivable problem with duct tape. Green’s “I’m Not Old I’m Ripe” tour hits Chilliwack, Victoria, Nanaimo, Courtenay, Surrey, Vernon, Kelowna and Prince George. His formula for deploying the handyman’s secret weapon has proven so popular that Premier Christy Clark may have been inspired. She’s had quite a flurry of hasty repairs in the last few months. Here’s a recap. The B.C. minimum wage was starting to lag behind other provinces, even after the overhaul it received in 2015, where annual increases are tied to inflation. Like Red’s truck tires, there has been a lack of inflation, and a surge of government spending back east leaving B.C. in the dust. B.C.’s wage rose 20 cents last year and was set to go up by another whole dime this fall. There was that familiar ripping sound in May as Clark and Jobs Minister Shirley Bond announced the September increase will be patched up to 40 cents, with another 40-cent increase next fall. Two wraps should hold it until after the election. Remember the episode where Red
taped two old Hyundai Ponies side by side to make a handyman’s Hummer? The school system has seen that kind of work in recent months. The first roll was applied by Education Minister Mike Bernier when he announced in March that the ministry’s “fix-it fund” was going from $35 million to $40 million. Then in mid-May, he announced 80 successful projects. The “fix-it fund” had fattened to $45 million, and Bernier was just BC VIEWS getting his sleeves rolled up. Hey school districts, reTom member the $25 million in Fletcher “administrative savings” the ministry demanded for the second year in a row? Now that you’ve squeezed that from your budgets, Bernier’s good news at the end of May was that the government’s giving it back to use for “front line services for students.” One of those services could be “maintaining schools despite falling enrolment in certain regions,” Bernier announced May 31, foreshadowing the next layer of repairs. Sure enough, a “rural schools fund” was rolled out on June 15. Clark and Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes made the announcement in Quesnel, where Kersley and Parkland elementary schools were going to close. Also eligible for a special fund was LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Okanagan-Similkameen, where Osoyoos high school students were going to be bused a half hour to Oliver. This is hardly unusual in rural schooling around B.C., but these are swing ridings, you see. Kootenay Lake district declined the opportunity to keep Yahk elementary open, with an anticipated fall enrolment of zero students. This all comes during the annual ritual combat between the ministry and Vancouver school board over keeping half-empty schools open. Bernier had one more roll in his overalls. School bus service, one of those things jettisoned or saddled with hundreds of dollars in fees per student as districts scraped up those “administrative savings,” was selectively saved with another $15 million fund announced last week. There have been a few other country fixes. They’re not going to ban weddings on farms any more, for instance. That old jalopy in the back yard you’ve been trying to soup up and get back on the road? Soon you can get a collector plate for that thing, which is perfect if you can only get it running once or twice a year. To paraphrase Red, if the voters don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

‘Citizen science’ tracks moose tick spread Tom Fletcher Black Press
Sightings of ‘ghost moose’ have long been reported in the B.C. wilderness, and now a systematic effort to collect reports is showing an increase in winter tick infestation that drives moose to rub away their dark winter hair. The second year of a B.C. government-led citizen reporting study collected more than 500

reports, mostly from northern B.C. Province-wide, 61 per cent of moose sightings reported visible hair loss, up from 50 per cent in the pilot project year of 2015. Heavy tick infestation can be fatal to moose, causing them to lose much of their hair and take time away from feeding to groom or rub themselves during early spring when they are at their weakest. As with mountain pine beetle and other bark beetles, winter tick populations rise with warmer conditions. Pregnant females have a higher survival rate because they aren’t dropping off into snow after engorging themselves on the host animal’s blood and laying eggs in spring. The last major infestation in the B.C. Interior was noted in 1999, after unusually warm conditions the previous year. Cold fall temperatures and early snow can also reduce ticks at
their larval stage. Based on 2016 snow data, the survey predicts increased tick severity in 2017 for the Skeena and Omineca regions. The tick monitoring program is publicized through local newspapers and radio, outdoor magazines and distribution to conservation officers, wildlife biologists, hunters, trappers and the general public. Responses increased after the pilot year, but remained low in the Cariboo, Kootenay, Lower Mainland and Okanagan regions. Winter ticks also affect whitetail and mule deer, elk and bison, but mainly moose. They are not a hazard for humans. There are three subspecies of moose in B.C., the large Alaskan Moose in the northwest, the Northwestern Moose across most of the province and the smaller Shiras Moose in the East Kootenay and extending into the U.S.

Three days at the Shambhala Music Festival Will Johnson Nelson Star
S
hortly after I arrived at the Shambhala Music Festival I found myself eating quinoa salad crosslegged beside the Salmo River with local filmmaker Jonathan Robinson, watching sun worshippers frolic across the river rocks and plunge into the sun-glinting water. “This isn’t too bad, huh?” he said. Jonathan had somehow spotted me admidst the 15,000-person crowd, having just finished a 12-hour volunteer shift that earned him his ticket to the 19th annual bacchanal. I didn’t recognize him at first, partially because he was wearing aviator sunglasses but mostly because he was dressed like Aladdin. “Happy Shambs!” he said — a sing-song phrase I would hear repeatedly over the course of the next three days— before chest-clasping me. This was my second year at the festival and I told him I was determined to last longer than last time’s record: 30 hours. “You should come to the opening ceremony with me, over at The Grove,” he said. “It’s really spiritual, so it’ll get us feeling centred, grounded. It’ll be good vibes.” We wandered past the Living Room stage first, where I wanted to get a shot of Nelson DJ Mooves. He was playing Footwork beats for some sand dancers while a gentle mist rained down from protective awnings. A friendly volunteer in a flamboyant feathered hat asked me if I’d like a spritz from her spray bottle. “Remember: consent is sexy!” she said. Nearby a steady stream of semi-nude revellers were marching across the bridge to party, their bright pink flamingo floaties and neon tubes contrasted against the lush greenery beyond them. An abundance of nipple pasties were on proud display—hearts, Xs and smiley faces bouncing from venue to venue.
“I can’t believe this is the real world,” one dude said. We eventually make it to the opening ceremony, where I saw Nelson musician Soniko Waira blessing a sacred, sand-sculpted space before Shauna Robertson and Soul Fire Dance entertained the forest-packed masses. Party-goers packed into the permanent, multi-tiered venue—which could easily be mistaken for an Ewok enclave. “Each of us is present and alive and here,” Robertson said, white hair breeze-rippling, before having the crowd address the Creator with her: “Teach us and show us the way.” It was a nice moment, spiritual. While all this was happening, though, I couldn’t help but notice that standing directly behind her in my field of vision was a green-bearded dude with nothing but a tartan flap to cover his junk—the sort of startling juxtaposition I slowly became acclimatized to. Eventually Jonathan and I parted ways, promising to meet up in a couple of hours. I didn’t see him again for two days. Instead I ran into another friend, this one equipped with an impressive tickle trunk full of costumes, who invited me to camp alongside him. Before long he had me wearing a pair of galaxy-themed tights and charging into the Fractal Forest to mosh. As it turns out, media outlets aren’t allowed to take pictures or video inside the Fractal Forest—they even made me sign something promising I wouldn’t— but even if I’d been permitted it would be impossible to adequately capture what I experienced there. Suffice to say there was a bright-flashing Egyptian temple, green lasers criss-crossing the sky and glowing Star Wars faces looming overhead in the flashing canopy. “How come Yoda looks so mad?” I asked someone, yelling over the music. “Don’t you think he should be smiling or friendly?”
The raver smirked at me. “That’s his bass face!” It was right around then an eight-foot dinosaur sauntered by me, snout-nodding politely in my direction as it passed. In the crowd I spotted familiar faces from Nelson everywhere I went. At one point founder Jimmy Bundschuh drove by me on his motorcycle, stopping long enough for me to run over and give him and his wife Jenna Arpita a hug. In total I probably caught five or six hours of entertainment, a tiny fraction of the 400 hours of live music on offer. My main priority was to hit up the local acts, such as Moontricks and Val Kilmer and the New Coke, but I also caught sets from DJs Mat the Alien, Chali 2na and Beats Antique. One thing I was fascinated by all weekend— an interest shared by Robinson, who would love to do a documentary on the topic—were the elaborate totems everyone was carrying aloft. I stopped a pair of girls to ask them what their sign, which said “Want” on one side and “Need” on the other, meant. “Well, sometimes I have a hard time differentiating between my wants and my needs,” one of them told me. “This reminds me that they’re two sides of the same coin.” The whole subculture fascinated me, and the people-watching was world class. Though I wasn’t going anywhere nearly as hard as many of the attendees, crashing before midnight on Friday and barely marking it to 2 a.m. on Saturday, I still felt like a giant brain sponge absorbing experience. Routinely overwhelmed, I would hike back to my campsite to sit, quiet, my ears thrumming. “What are you doing, man?” asked one parking attendant, who turned out to be a Vancouver DJ named Tre Funk. It was 8 a.m. on Saturday morning and I’d just crawled out of my RAV. “Are you reading?” I shrugged, glancing
down at the Harper’s in my lap. I was partway through an article about the “New Narcissism” of my generation. “Dude, you’re at a rave!” Funk convinced me to saunter over and join in the party banter, along with my friend, and ultimately the three of us spent the next four hours back-slapping and story-swapping. Before long we’d attracted a crowd, including a dude from Edmonton named Trippz and a tattooed party-goer with “Reality is an excuse for limitations” tattooed inside his bicep. “I’m realizing that the hyperbolic, fictional version of Shambhala that I invented in my head doesn’t even touch how crazy it actually is here,” I told my friends. “I mean, look!” Two rainbow-coloured men were nude-sprinting past, paint dripping from their danglers. “What were you guys doing?” I asked, flagging one down. “We covered ourselves in paint and rolled on the canvas to make art,” he told me, whooping. “Happy Shambs!” From there the visual and artistic onslaught continued. By Sunday evening I was barely functional, underslept and stinky-footed. I’d done some river-bathing, forest-exploring and even acted as a human hand mirror while my new friend Bayley adjusted her purple wig underneath a pair of curled antlers. Eventually I realized I didn’t have it in me to stick around for the Moontricks show I’d been hoping to catch, and my Nelson bed was beckoning. It didn’t help that a thunderstorm was whipping at the tents and keeping me RAV-hidden. By this point a small community had grown up where I was parked, so I wandered over to say goodbye. First there was Chewbacca, a dude from Edmonton. He gave me a big hug, and so did his beautiful girlfriend Ashley, who had acted as the camp Mom and fed

me repeatedly. Some people were asleep in half-deflated blow-up boats while others were already getting dressed for the last night of rev-

The backbone of junior hockey
Billet families provide East Kootenay junior hockey players with necessities away from rink to aid success on ice TAYLOR ROCC A Sports Editor
Good people are the backbone of junior hockey and that doesn’t stop at the doors of the arena. In fact, it begins in the community and on the front steps of each and every billet home. Without a friendly face, familiar roof and warm bed at the end of each night, junior hockey players would be left in the cold, many away from home while not only facing the challenge of a full-on hockey schedule, but also juggling academics and the task of learning to live independently for the first time. Navigating a life of independence is enough of a challenge for anyone, forget about having to balance hockey and school on top of it all. With the East Kootenay serving as home to a pair of local junior hockey clubs — the WHL’s Kootenay Ice and KIJHL’s Kimberley Dynamiters — there is always a need for billet families and the outlook heading into the 2016-17 hockey season is no different. “It gives our guys a home away from home,” said Chris Wahl, director of sales and public relations for the Kootenay Ice. “For some of these guys, they’re leaving their homes for the first time. It’s important for them to have a place where they can feel secure and comfortable. That translates into their performance on the ice. “Being a billet family is definitely intensive work, but at the same time, it can provide lifelong memories and life-
long relationships as well.” With at least 20 to 23 players on an active roster, an ideal world sees each team with 20 to 23 billet families, though it isn’t uncommon for many homes to house more than one player. Every situation is unique and according to Wahl, there is a very detailed process when it comes to assigning players and ensuring that the circumstance is a good fit, both for the family and the young hockey player. While the WHL’s Ice are in need of billet families in the Cranbrook area, just up the highway, the Junior B Dynamiters are also in need of billets in the Kimberley area. “Dedicated billet families are so crucial to the success of the organization,” said Karrie Hall, secretary for the Dynamiters and formerly the team’s billet coordinator, in September 2015. “You can never have too many quality billet families… That sort of family atmosphere helps our players grow into men off the ice, while allowing them to strive for success on the ice.” Hall isn’t just speaking from the position of someone previously tasked with finding billet homes for young athletes. This past season, she housed two Dynamiters billets in her own home. Also in Kimberley, Iona and Lyle Prier celebrated 20 seasons as a billet family this past year. If anyone in the East Kootenay can tell you about the rewards to being a junior hockey billet family, it’s the Pri-

Iona and Lyle Prier (centre) drop the ceremonial puck at the Kimberley Dynamiters 2015-16 regular season home opener in September 2015. The Priers celebrated their 20th season as junior hockey billets this past year.
“We have been blessed... I thank the Lord that we’ve been able to do it [billet]... It’s been great.” Lyle Prier Kimberley, B.C. ers. “We have been blessed,” Lyle said in September 2015. “I keep telling the billet coordinator she gives us the best boys each season. “I thank the Lord that we’ve been able to do it… It’s been great.” With training camps
right around the corner — the Kootenay Ice open camp Aug. 28 and the Kimberley Dynamiters open their doors Aug. 26 — the search for billet families in both communities gets greater by the day.
Billet families for both organizations are provided with monthly stipends to help cover the costs associated with providing a welcoming home. Junior hockey players range from 16 to 20 years of age. As a result, many attend local high schools, while those who have graduated
often tackle part-time studies at post-secondary institutions such as College of the Rockies. Players typically come from western Canada, the United States and, in some cases, Europe. Folks interested in supporting the Ice in the role of a billet family are encouraged to contact Wahl (250-417-0322; cwahl@kootenayice. net) or visit the Kootenay Ice office located inside Western Financial Place. Those interested in supporting the Dynamiters as a billet family
are encouraged to contact billet coordinator Jodi L’Heureux (250427-9833; jodilheureux@telus.net). “Really, the intangibles are why a lot of people do it,” Wahl said. “It can range from anything to the feeling of wanting to give back or to the feeling of wanting to become a part of the team in more than just coming to the games. “Those lifelong relationships can happen and can be a pretty positive experience, not just for the player, but for the families that host them as well.”
De Grasse races to bronze in 100 metres at Rio Olympics C ANADIAN PRESS
RIO DE JANEIRO Andre De Grasse proved once again that he can run with the best sprinters in the world. The Canadian flew to a personal best time of 9.91 seconds to take the bronze medal in the men’s 100-metre sprint Sunday at the Rio Olym-
pics. De Grasse beat his bronze-medal time from the 2015 world championships by one-hundredth of a second, trailing only the legendary Usain Bolt and American sprinter Justin Gatlin in a star-studded field.
“I’m speechless,” De Grasse said. “They’re probably jumping up and down screaming back home in Canada.” The sprinter form Markham, Ont., kept Canada’s medal streak alive. Canadian athletes have won at least one medal on every day of
competition and sit 11th in the total medal standings with 13 (two gold, two silver, nine bronze). He also is the first Canadian male athlete to win hardware in Rio. Canada’s Olympic women claimed the country’s first 12 medals. Bolt won gold for the
third straight Games in 9.86 seconds, and Gatlin took silver in 9.89. With this likely the last Olympics for Bolt, and Gatlin at age 34, the future looks bright for the 21-year-old De Grasse. “I think so definitely,” Athletics Canada head
coach Peter Eriksson said when asked if De Grasse should be the favourite at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. “He’s now on the stage where he can be the greatest Canadian athlete ever.” Diver Jennifer Abel came up just short of making it a multi-medal
day for the Canadians. The 24-year-old from Laval, Que., finished fourth in the individual three-metre springboard on Sunday, a week after narrowly missing the podium in the synchronized three metre with partner Pamela Ware.

Prince Rupert miners face 18 pollution charges To m F l e tc h e r Black Press
Two men and a mining company in receivership have been charged with 18 pollution infractions related to their shut-down gold mine on an island near Prince Rupert. Benjamin Mossman and Dirk Meckert are scheduled to appear in Prince Rupert provincial court Sept. 7. Also charged is Banks Island Gold Ltd., which went into receivership after being shut down last year for provincial permit violations. The Yellow Giant mine was ordered shut down by the Ministry of Environment in July 2015 after a tailings spill was reported on a tip. There is one charge of failing to report a
spill of a polluting substance, and the other 17 charges are for failing to comply with permits. North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice raised the issue in the legislature this spring, after receiving a letter from the Gitxaala First Nation referring to two separate tailings spills. Rice said the ministry did not inspect the operation for 15 months, until receiving a complaint. NDP mining critic Norm Macdonald told the legislature a worker at the mine “became fed up, put his job on the line, sent the ministry and me a tip and pictures that documented what was going on there.” Energy and Mines
Minister Bill Bennett said the mine was shut down when the situation was brought to its attention. The mine’s 90 employees lost their jobs. The province has a $420,000 security bond from the mining company, to provide ongoing monitoring. In March the mines ministry and Banks Island Gold removed explosives from the mine site and in May ministry technical staff assessed the hazardous materials on site. The B.C. Conservation Officer Service, which recommended the charges, would not comment on the current condition of the Banks Island site, because it is evidence for the prosecution.

PREPARE YOUR HOME TO PROTECT AGAINST WILDFIRE Owners of homes and properties that are not conscious of the risk, not only pose a threat to their properties, but also threaten neighbours and emergency services personnel. The reality is that if you don’t take basic steps to minimize the wildfire risk around your home or property, emergency services will focus their response on properties they can save -- the rest will have to fend for themselves. There are plenty of public education tools available to provide advice on wildfire preparedness for individuals and homeowners, which can teach how to adapt to living with the threat of wildfire and how to work with your community and your neighbours to prevent loss of life and property in the event of a wildfire. If you have questions about techniques, materials, and procedures, contact Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services, provincial forestry personnel or local landscaping groups. You can also visit http://bcwildfire.ca/ Prevention/firesmart.htm or http://cranbrook. ca/our-city/city-departments/fire-andemergency-services/firesmart/ for plenty of great information to help you prepare

MOSQUITO CONTROL – WHAT CAN YOU DO? Effective mosquito control requires the combined the efforts of individual property/homeowners with those of the City of Cranbrook Mosquito Control Program. With water levels lower than average this year sources of standing water from around your property will have a huge potential for mosquito development. Some places to eliminate standing water include: Clogged gutters and ditches, Trays under flower pots, Outside pets’ dishes, Children’s pools and toys, Untreated or unmaintained pools or ponds, Bird baths and feeders,Tarps, Canoes / boats,Tires Residents are encouraged to call the Mosquito Hotline at (250) 421-1294 to report potential mosquito development sites or for more information regarding the Mosquito Control Program.

Lightning causes fires across province C anadian Press
The B.C. Wildfire Service says 14 fires caused by lightning were recorded Sunday as a return to summer heat raised the wildfire risk across the province. Information officer Kevin Skrepnek says a total of 66 fires were burning and there have been 820 since the fire season began April 1. He says most of the fires have been caused by lightning. The fire danger rating over most of southern B.C. is listed as moderate but southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands have a high rating, along with sections of the Interior and northern B.C.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You have energy and conviction. Can you be stopped? It is doubtful. A quality of impulsiveness marks this day, adding to the unpredictable nature of those around you. You know how to use spontaneity in your favor. Ask for a friend’s feedback. Tonight: Make it fiery. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Stay on top of your work, and know what needs to happen. Be aware of your need to follow through on certain details. Your sense of humor and ability to understand others emerge. You could be delighted by someone’s fiery display. Tonight: Count on being out and/or working late. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Be willing to take an overview. You enjoy being in the thick of things, but presently you are better off just observing. You admire someone’s empathy. Be willing to detach more, and you’ll start seeing the world as this person does! Tonight: Listen to great music.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) Be aware of the costs of proceeding as you have been. Discussions revolve around the moment and your long-term desires. Laugh and relax, even if you feel insecure. A parent or boss suddenly might make a demand. Try to be more available. Tonight: Use your energy well. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Others seek you out. If you celebrate good news, people will want to celebrate with you. Much of the strength and contentment of today revolves around your interpersonal relationships and popularity. Tonight: Have a serious chat with an outrageous friend or loved one. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Your sense of accomplishment and ability to move forward could be tainted by someone’s unpredictability. Sometimes this lack of stability gets the best of you. Think less about the matter at hand, and accept your role as the embodiment of stability. Tonight: Happiest at home. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Defer all you want, but know
Tundra
that others have little patience and are likely to upset the applecart. You might decide to do it anyway so that you can use your creativity to restructure a pivotal matter more to your liking. Tonight: A talk with a loved one might be stilted. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You might be uptight for no reason. On some level, you could be visualizing financial stress because of present demands. Give serious thought to tightening up your spending and creating a more solid budget. Tonight: A chat with a family member is revealing. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might be questioning a personal choice and wondering why you need to head in a certain direction. Your somewhat offbeat questioning could cause someone to throw in the towel. Tonight: Recognize that what is going on around you is thought-provoking gossip! CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You might be more pivotal than you realize. Others want certain responses from you and could be looking for big changes and
more consistency. You naturally give the gift of stability, but you can’t always charge on as others visualize. Tonight: Debate whether to break the mold. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You work well with the energy around you. Even though a call might jolt you, given time you will gain a fresh perspective. Associates and/or friends tend to toe the line, and although you might find this to be a little disconcerting, you’ll accept it. Tonight: Caught up in the moment. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You might decide to pull back despite the fact that you are rather interested in what is happening. You will want to see the whole situation play out so that you can understand and grasp others’ motives. Tonight: Opt for plenty of R and R. You are going to need it! Sparwood considers changes to garbage bylaw
The Municipality of Sparwood in southeastern B.C. is mulling changes to its garbage bylaw in hopes of cutting down on problems with bears. Sparwood’s director of engineering says council is looking at eliminating the use of stand alone plastic garbage bags in all residential areas. Instead, residents would have to take their trash to animal resistant cans at the corner of the block, and those same animal resistant cans would be required in some commercial areas and at campgrounds. If adopted, Sparwood residents would no longer be allowed to put out bagged trash for pickup. A public meeting is planned so people can voice their concerns.

Online lottery winner in B.C.
B.C. lottery players seem to have a knack at capturing large online lottery windfalls. A winning Lotto 6-49 ticket purchased online somewhere in B.C. won $21 million in the Aug. 13 draw. That’s the largest-ever online lottery prize won in Canada. The country’s previous online lottery record was $7.6 million won by a Nanaimo resident in December 2010.

NASA: Last month was Earth’s hottest in recorded history
NASA calculates that Earth just broiled to its hottest month in recorded history. Even after the fading of a strong El Nino, which spikes global temperatures on top of man-made climate change, July burst global temperature records. NASA calculates that July 2016 was 1.51 degrees Fahrenheit (0.84 degrees Celsius) warmer than the 1950-1980 global average. NASA chief climate scientist Gavin Schmidt said that’s about .18 degrees hotter than the previous top temperatures, in July 2011 and July 2015. Scientists blame mostly man-made climate change from the burning of fossil fuel, with an extra jump from the now-gone El Nino, which is a natural temporary warming of parts of the Pacific Ocean that changes weather worldwide.

Dear Annie by Annie Lane
outside the nest Dear Annie: I apparently failed as a parent at teaching my daughter financial responsibility. I raised her as a single parent and worked hard to provide for us. After a few difficult years when she was young, I achieved a fair degree of financial success as a professional. I must have made her think money grows on trees (or comes out on demand from ATMs). I was generous in helping her through college and graduate school and helping her buy her first house. Despite her master’s degree, she makes very little money and struggles financially. I recently inherited some money from my mother and told her I would help her straighten out her financial mess. I asked her to send me all her past-due bills and was shocked and disgusted. She has defaulted on numerous credit cards (why do they keep giving her more?), has lines of credit against the house I helped her buy, owes years of unpaid taxes, has stiffed merchants (even her dentist) and has several judgments against her for unpaid debt. She wants me to help her get a “fresh start.” I am afraid that if I were to help her wipe out her substantial debt, she would just start all over again and in a few years be back in the same hole. I will have wasted my mom’s inheritance. She is 38, and I have no legal duty to pay her debts. But if I were not to help, there would be a huge rift between us. What is your advice? -- Distraught Mom Dear Distraught: There’s an old saying that there are two gifts parents must give their children: roots so they know where home is and wings so they can take flight. Tell your daughter she can sleep on your couch if she loses her home. But let her pull herself out of debt so she can learn what she’s capable of. Keep expecting her to be a deadbeat and she’ll gladly keep playing the part. Dear Annie: I have a dear friend who is quite heavy and frequently drops by. After a recent visit, I noticed what looked like a large thread of fabric hanging off the bottom of the seat of the chair she had been in. It turned out that the spring of the seat was completely sagging and broken. You may ask how I know it was the friend, and the answer is these chairs were brand-new in 2007. I’ve never had a problem before with any furniture. Furthermore, during a recent visit to my friend’s home, I noticed an office chair in the living room, and it was mentioned that the reason it was there was the original chair had been broken. I don’t know what to do. She will certainly be at my house again sometime. I would never want to say anything to make her feel bad, as I really care about my friend. But what can I tell her the next time she makes an impromptu appearance? Would it be rude to get a folding chair and direct her to that? I don’t want the chair broken again. It’s part of a set, and I don’t want to have to pay for more repairs or have to buy a whole new set. I need help on how to handle this the right way. -- Afraid to Tell Her Dear Afraid: I am going to go out on a limb here and say your friend is more aware than anyone of her size. Don’t fret that this situation will be the first time it’s been brought to her attention -- especially because there was already a broken chair in her house. The next time she stops by, simply offer her another place to sit. Tell her the other chair was broken recently and you’re worried about the amount of support the set offers. She’ll probably piece it together herself, without the matter damaging your friendship. Send your questions for Annie Lane to dearannie@creators.com.
