The best way of countering all the misogyny in hip-hop music is to become a strong, empowered female rapper. Mwahahaha! That’s the diabolical revenge plot of Tamra Nash and her on-stage alter-ego, Ms. Teaze. For the past seven years, the popular Red Deer MC has been performing her own powerful, pro-female rhymes about overcoming bullying, poor self-image and depression. In the process, she’s gained the respect of some heavy-duty male rappers. Since 2011 Ms.Teaze has opened for Wu-Tang, Snak The Ripper, Moka Only, Apathy, Swollen Members, and Tech N9ne and many others. Her energetic live performances have helped stoke Red Deer’s vibrant hip-hop scene and have silenced a lot of the bias she initially encountered as a rare female in the field. “I often was looked at ‘….hmmm this is a girl hiphop artist?’ and as soon as I went on stage they were blown away!” said Nash. “I definitely had to push my way through the scene to get respect.” Her music on YouTube has reach fans from all over the world. Ms. Teaze, who regularly plays in Edmonton and Calgary, is grateful for all the support. Next month, she will be performing at Alberta Music’s hip-hop Awards in Edmonton. “I should have

been nominated, but I was selected as a performer,” joked Nash, who also looks forward to three upcoming local gigs: • On Friday, Aug. 19, Ms. Teaze will perform outdoors with dozens of other indie musicians at Ourfest at the Tail Creek Race Way in Nevis. (Tickets $65 from www.ourfest.ca). • On Sunday, Aug. 21, she’ll be in a 7 p.m. diverse lineup at the Universoul fundraiser to raise awareness of mental illness at Bo’s Bar and Grill in Red Deer. (Tickets $10 from www.universoullifestyle. com). • And on Saturday, Sept. 3, Ms. Teaze will be open at 9 p.m. for rappers Merkules and Prada West at the Scott Block. (Tickets $22.50 from the artists, or at the door). “I grew up with a strong work ethic,” hence the busy schedule, said the 30-year-old rapper. While Nash also works as a fitness assistant at the Collicutt Centre, she added “I’m very passionate about my music.” She was swept up by the emotional power of hiphop while growing up in north Red Deer. Some of her biggest influences were New York-area rappers Nas and Jadakiss. But Mariah Carey and Prince tunes were also be played around the house when her mother wasn’t labouring long hours at Michener Centre to raise three children as a single parent. You don’t have to grow up on the mean streets of Detroit to know deprivation. Nash said although her mom “worked day and night to make ends meet… we were poor… “As soon as I was 12 years old, I’d be knocking on people’s doors asking if I could shovel their snow or rake their leaves just so I could eat.” She used to put on a steely front while attending classes at Normandeau and Lindsay Thurber. While

Nash realized her talent for music after her friend Travis Omen, of the Red Deer-formed band Midwest Mindset, recorded her first track, Brighter Days at his home studio. She rushed home to play it for her family: “I put it on CD player and my grandma started crying…” It was her first clue that her music could profoundly affect people. Her tune Let Me Start Again is about dealing with loss. The Last Laugh is about finding yourself. Nash believes too many people lose themselves in relationships or work, then feel worthless after a break-up or job lay-off. Her latest EP, Unity, Empowerment, Respect, sold out last week when Nash mailed the last copy to a fan in B.C. “Now I’m hungry to make a new album.” Meanwhile, she will continue to perform at schools and at various charitable events because she believes in giving back. lmichelin@reddeeradvocate.com 7718162H12

Letters from Canada’s GG DAVID JOHNSTON’S LETTERS TAKEN INDIVIDUALLY ARE A WONDERFUL READ PEGGY FREEMAN Book Review

The Idea of Canada: Letters to a Nation by David Johnston McClelland & Stewart $32 I am a Patriot who has the good fortune to live in the best part of the best Country in the world, so of course this book appealed to me. David Johnston is our Governor General and an avid letter writer. His own story is quite wonderful; a gifted young person who held Scholarships, first to Harvard and then to Oxford Universities, and who meets Canadians from all walks of life. In this book, he has collected letters he has written to Canadians, those he felt needed a big thank-you for their service to our country. Not all these letters were delivered, as some of them address groups, for example, the Armed Forces, but the author is a fine writer and it is never inappropriate to say thanks. His first letter of this collection is addressed to an unknown Inuit boy. When the Governor General

comes to town, naturally there’s a bit of fuss made, but this young boy asked, “Who are you anyway?” The letter explains his job and answers the query. The book is set up in this way: first the letter, then a nice description of the person he is addressing. So if the letter is to Jacline Nyman or Kevin Vickers, the reader will learn that Jacline is the chief executive officer of the United Way Centraide Canada, and (as most of us know) Kevin Vickers was the Sergeant at Arms in the Parliament Building when Corporal Nathan Cirillo was shot. Read this book in several sessions, there are 49 letters, but even a kindly grand fatherly type who is thanking people for service and prodding us all to do better, can wear you out. Taken individually they are wonderful. To Chris Hadfield he says… “those who explore new frontiers and reveal rare wonders share the same traits…David Thompson was 16 years old when he was sent to set up a trading post in Hudson’s Bay.” Sometimes, though the letter is addressed to one person, David Johnston gives us all a thorough scolding, as in the letter to Tracy Porteous, who has worked for thirty years to stop violence against women. “We should make it our goal never to fail another girl or woman again.” He writes to Andrew Bennett, Canada’s Ambassador of Religious Freedom, and Laura Eggertson, President of the Adoption Council of Canada and the thirty-thousand children (as of this writing) looking for homes in Canada. Here is a letter to the Unknown Soldier and to George Stanley, who designed our Flag, and to the Immigrant, becoming a new citizen, and a letter to Larry Murray, grand president of the Royal Canadian Legion. You knew of course, he would address us all at last. Canada’s birthday is coming. In 2017 we will be 150. David Johnston says, “do something for Canada, no matter how big or small.” What will your gift be? This book contains, praise and scolding and encouragement, a valuable book. BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Executive producer Jason Katims said he’s still open to revisiting “Parenthood,” but just not yet. “I would see picking it up after much time has passed,” he said Wednesday following a press event to promote his upcoming CBS medical drama “Pure Genius.” “It’s got to start with a story you’re burning to tell. When I get to that point where I say, ‘I want to tell this story about the Bravermans.’ … then I’ll go about the work of calling Peter Krause or Lauren (Graham) and everybody else and say, ‘Are you up for this?”’ When he is ready, Katims said he has “no idea” where that story will live, whether it’s Netflix or Hulu or some other streaming service or site. “The landscape is so rapidly changing, so at that time it would be like, ‘OK, what would be the right place to do this?”’ Parenthood ended its six-season run on NBC in 2015. The show followed a large, close family living in the San Francisco Bay area and became known for its emotional storylines like breakups, fertility struggles, PTSD and cancer. Stock up on tissues because Katims said “Pure Genius” will also tug at the heart. “I like accessing the emotional centre of stories and it’s become the vocabulary of how I think about story,” he said. Katims has a track record of making television that viewers get very attached to, like his former series Friday Night Lights. After some initial talk of reviving that story he now says it’s not in the cards. “‘Friday Night Lights’ is not gonna happen,” he said. “I had entertained that for a while. It takes 100% commitment, everybody being committed, everybody wanting to do it, everybody thinking that’s a good idea.”

One of the hallmarks of the 1980s series MacGyver, starring Richard Dean Anderson, is he avoided guns and relied on his wits to disarm or keep the bad guys at bay. MacGyver hasn’t changed his outlook in the CBS reboot starring Lucas Till, but that doesn’t mean it will be a gun-free show. “It will be unrealistic to do this type of show and not have anybody have any type of gun,” executive producer Peter Lenkov said at an annual summer event for TV critics. “Macgyver’s a guy if he needs a weapon he will build it.” Someone who will use them, however, is the Jack Dalton character, now played by George Eads, who has a military background. Macgyver premieres Friday, Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. EDT on CBS.

Looking forward to Berry’s next novel KIRSTEN LOWE Book Review

Under the Harrow by Flynn Berry Fiction Published: June 2016, Penguin Publishing Group Nora and Rachel Lawrence are completely opposite sisters. Nora works as an assistant landscape artist in the hectic town of London. Rachel, the elder sister, lives out in the country with small villages and a sense if

isolation. On the weekend that Nora hopped on the train to have some sister time at Rachel’s place, she did not expect her world to turn upside down. What was meant to be a fun get away and have some sister time for Nora turns into a nightmare when she discovers that her sister has been gruesomely murdered in her house. While the investigation takes way it becomes obvious that this was no robbery gone wrong – someone was stalking Rachel. Other factors reveal that Rachel was planning on moving without telling anyone. Although the investigators are thorough, Nora has her doubts in the police since they failed to catch the madman who attacked Rachel fifteen years earlier. Behind the detective’s backs, Nora starts to look into her sister’s case her-

self. It is then she realizes that Rachel had many secrets – to the point where Nora feels like she never truly knew her sister. The last thing Nora should be doing is playing detective – the murder has left her on the verge of having a mental breakdown and throughout the whole book. She is confused, dazed and full of painful grief that readers get to view first hand because she herself is the narrator. But when it comes to family people will push aside everything else going on in their lives and focus on that family member. Discovering who killed her sister and why becomes almost like an obsession for Nora, she always have suspects in her mind and it comes to the point where she is watching and creeping after complete

strangers who knew Rachel. The plot takes a huge turn when one of Nora’s suspect’s challenges her saying that the police should be investigating her. Was Nora’s relationship with her sister healthy? This is a short and intricate novel. For me, it took some time to get into. Initially I found Berry’s writing very dry and monotone, but (like the plot) it does pick up and then you’re hooked. For a debut novel, Flynn Berry shows great talent when it comes to psychological thrillers. Her style of writing takes some time to adjust too, but trust me it’s worth it. Congratulations Flynn Berry on her first novel, and I look forward to seeing what she’ll write next. *Please Note: there is a brief, yet unsettling, incident with animal abuse. BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — CBS’ entertainment president defended his network’s efforts to air more inclusive series even as it introduces a fall slate of new sitcoms and dramas with white male stars. Glen Geller, fielding a barrage of diversity-related questions at a TV critics meeting Wednesday, repeatedly said the network must improve “and we know it.” “In terms of leads, we’re definitely less diverse this year than last year, and we need to do better,” Geller said. But a number of actors of colour are part of series ensembles, he said, and progress is being made in other areas. “We also need to look behind the camera as well,” he said, with diversity at CBS to be found, for example, among more than half the directors on Madam Secretary and The Odd Couple. Asked why the executive producers or “showrunners” on new CBS series are all white, Geller responded that the network “picked up the best shows from the pilots we made.” CBS’ freshman shows, including an update of MacGyver and a show inspired by the early career of Phil McGraw, feature Michael Weatherly, Kevin James, Joel McHale and Dermot Mulroney among other white stars. Minority characters are joining

returning series. Among them: African-American actor Nelsan Ellis joining the cast of Elementary, Latino actor Wilmer Valderrama coming on board as an agent on NCIS and black actress-comedian Aisha Tyler becoming a series regular on Criminal Minds. At midseason, CBS will debut Doubt, starring African-American transgender actress Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black) alongside Katherine Heigl, and Training Day with black actor Justin Cornwell starring opposite Bill Paxton. Other networks have made strides, most notably ABC with series including black-ish and Scandal that are topped by minority actors. The day before Geller spoke to the Television Critics Association, FX Networks chief John Landgraf discussed his efforts to quickly and successfully address a lack of minority directors. Why is a lack of diversity so entrenched at CBS? “Look, I’m acknowledging we need to do better,” said Geller, who took over as CBS Entertainment president last fall. Last year, the Associated Press did an analysis of the ethnic diversity of cast members on prime-time comedies and dramas on the major broadcast networks, comparing the results to 2000 when civil rights groups protested new programming slates nearly devoid of minorities.

Jimmy Kimmel compares Donald Trump to Toronto’s former mayor Rob Ford Enough with all the Donald Trump and Rob Ford comparisons, says Jimmy Kimmel. The talk show host was in Montreal this past week for the Just for Laughs comedy festival and to be a judge on “Jeff Ross Presents Roast Battle” (available for streaming at thecomedynetwork.ca). Like a few other comedians, he drew the line at comparing the Republican presidential candidate to the late Toronto mayor. “Canadians like to say that,” says Kimmel, “but let’s not forget that Rob Ford was smoking crack. When Donald Trump picks up a crack pipe, then we’ll have a comparison.” Kimmel did concede that, like Ford, Trump has been “a gift from the comedy gods.” He has a theory as to why the campaigning billionaire seems to get away with one outrageous statement after another. “He does two crazy things every day,” says Kimmel. “Nothing sticks to him because we can’t keep up with all this stuff. You can’t even focus on one of them because by five o’clock that afternoon he’s done something else.” Kimmel was saddened by the news of Ford’s passing. The former mayor of Toronto died on March 22 at age 46. Ford and his brother Doug had flown to Los Angeles to appear on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” in 2014. “I did get to know him and I did get to know his brother,” says Kimmel. “Whatever you want to say about the guy, he really cared about being mayor and he really cared about doing a good job. Obviously he had his demons.” When the Fords landed at Los Angeles International Airport en route to Kimmel’s show, the host, dressed as a chauffeur, picked them up in a limo. “I don’t think he knew who I was,” says Kimmel. “I do remember he spent the whole car ride on the phone, calling back constituents who had left him phone messages.” That was impressive, says Kimmel. “I wish his spirit would somehow fill the potholes on my drive to work.” Kimmel made his first appearance at Just for Laughs 19 years ago and says he “immediately fell deeply in love” with Montreal. “It’s hard for people in America to understand that restaurants turn into nightclubs at the end of the meal. We usually have dessert and go home. In our restaurants, they don’t move the

He’s entering his 14th season hosting “Jimmy Kimmel Live” (weeknights at midnight on The Comedy Network). “We’re all working so much harder than anyone ever used to,” he says, suggesting one of his idols, Johnny Carson, “played a lot of tennis back in his day. “I think we ruined the job for everyone by adding these viral videos and these sketches to the mix,” says Kimmel. “It used to be a reasonable job that you could go home at 6 o’clock at night and not think about the show until the next day. Hit maker Timbaland producing music for fitness brand Zumba BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK — Hit-making producer Timbaland is used to people dancing to his beats at nightclubs, and now fans will get a chance to move to music he specifically designed for working out through a new partnership with Zumba. The man behind hits for Justin Timberlake and Jay Z is crafting songs for STRONG by Zumba, a non-dance-inspired workout that focuses on high-intensity interval training, bodyweight exercises and strength training paired with music to match every move. “I’ve always been into fitness, and music is a big part of exercising for me, and I feel like STRONG by Zumba was a great way — with my edge, my music style — to put it together,” the 44-year-old Grammy winner said in an interview Tuesday. The Timbaland-produced song “Nobody,” performed by his new girl group, Obs3ssed, will be used by STRONG by Zumba instructors during training sessions the track won’t be available for sale or streaming. Timbaland is also working on another song with fellow producer Scott Storch for the program. STRONG by Zumba isn’t like typical Zumba classes where Latin dances are at the forefront. Timbaland says his music is designed to help people get through workouts with more ease and

inspire people to push their limits at the gym. ‘Pete’s Dragon’ (pleasantly) stays earthbound BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK — After an exhausting summer buffet of set pieces, superheroes and whatever s-word you might use for Suicide Squad, the gentle Pete’s Dragon is a welcome palate cleanser. Where other summer movies are chest-thumping, it’s quiet where others are brashly cynical, it’s sweetly sincere where others are lacking in giant cuddly dragons, Pete’s Dragon has one. Few may remember the 1977 Disney original, in which a young boy’s best friend was a bubbly dragon invisible to others. As part of Disney’s continuing effort to remake its animated classics in live-action, Pete’s Dragon has been confidently reborn as an earnest tale of greenwinged wonder. David Lowery, a veteran of the independent film world and the director of the lyrical crime drama Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, inherits a far bigger film. But his Pete’s Dragon still maintains the homespun feel of an American fable. Spielberg-light, you might call it. The film begins, in the Bambi tradition, in paren-

tal tragedy. Pete’s family is driving through a remote Pacific Northwest forest with Pete nestled in the backseat of the station wagon, reading a children’s book about a dog named Elliot. A deer sprints out and, in poetic slow-motion, the gravity of the car’s interior is upended. The car flips off the road and Pete staggers from the crash. Flashing forward six years, Pete (Oakes Fegley) is a wild 10-year-old orphan living in the woods alone except for his magical companion, the dragon Elliot. As far as CGI creatures go, Elliot is an irresistible one. Furry as a fairway, he’s like an enormous emerald-green puppy. Far from the Game of Thrones dragon variety, he’s more adept at chasing his own tail than breathing fire. He’s also the subject of local folklore, mostly as told by Robert Redford’s wood-carving storyteller. But it’s his forest ranger daughter Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard) that first encounters Elliot and ultimately leads to the dragon’s discovery. Grace coaxes Elliot back into society and into the fold of her family. She has a daughter, Natalie (Oona Laurence) and lumber mill-running husband Jack (Wes Bentley). It’s the push by a logging compa-

ny — where Jack’s brother, Gavin (Karl Urban) is a gun-totting lumberjack — into the forest that simultaneously begins flushing out Pete and Elliot from their home in the trees. The lush forest (New Zealand, again, subbing for North America) reigns over Pete’s Dragon, a tale scored with soft bluegrass and exuding an environment-friendly love for the beautiful and exotic splendors of nature. When competing interests come for Elliot, they are really fighting for the soul of the forest. There are Spielbergian gestures here of magic and family and faith, perhaps better orchestrated than Spielberg’s own recent try at a Disney film, The BFG. But it’s missing a spark, a sense of danger and maybe a little humour. The lean simplicity of Pete’s Dragon is its greatest attribute and its weakness. It doesn’t quite achieve liftoff until the film’s final moments. But it does at last catch flight, finally soaring beyond its humble folksiness. Pete’s Dragon, a Walt Disney Co. release, is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for “action, peril and brief language.” Three stars out of four.

Playing the forest-ranger daughter of Robert Redford’s character, who tells tall tales about a mythical dragon, brought to mind fantastical stories she heard from her own dad — famed director Ron Howard. “I’m one of four kids and he would drive us to school every morning and use us as a test audience and test out the story of his films on us,” Howard said in a recent interview. “I remember him telling me the story of Willow on one of these car rides, I remember the story to Far and Away being told to me on one of these rides, and he would test out a lot of The Grinch. “I think it was a powerful exercise for him, to tell his story out loud and get a sense of where the audience would react based on how very, very hon-Bryce Dallas his est, blunt children would react.” Howard Howard said she was “obsessed” as a kid with Disney’s original Pete’s Dragon from 1977. “We had a VHS copy of the film that we just basically ran into the ground,” said Howard, whose other credits include The Help and Jurassic World. “And when I heard that I was going to actually be in Pete’s Dragon, I called my little sister and told her and she burst into tears. She was like, ‘Oh my gosh, that beautiful movie.’ So it is really meaningful to me.” Pete’s Dragon is a live-action reimagining of the original animated film. Oakes Fegley stars as young Pete, who wanders off into the woods after a car crash that kills his parents. There, he meets a friendly dragon who ends up raising him until Howard’s character and a deforestation crew stumble across him six years later. Co-stars include Oona Laurence as a young girl who grows fond of Pete, and Wes Bentley and Karl Urban as lumber mill workers. David Lowery directed and co-wrote the story. The young star even seemed like a budding director on set. “He would ask, and not in a precocious way or anything, he would ask very genuinely, questions like, ‘Oh, I’m sorry, what lens are you using right now?’ And then he would adjust his performance according to the lenses that were being used.” The film is set in a fictional town in the Pacific Northwest but it was shot in New Zealand, which brought back more memories for Howard. “I had been to New Zealand 30 years previously with my family, with my dad, because he was shooting Willow and I have really incredible memories of that time in my life,” she said. “So to get to be there and bring my kids, and they went to school there — and to have them on set and then now know that they’re going to get to see this

film and it will give that much more context for their memories — it’s something that I absolutely treasured as a kid and I hope they feel the same way.” Her son was even an extra in one scene. “We were watching the trailer for the film and there was a shot of the scene he was in — and he recognizes things right away, he’s visually kind of gifted — and he was like, ‘There I am!’ ” said Howard. “We were like, ‘Wait, what?’ It took like 10 times, we paused … the trailer and there’s a wisp of his hair,” she continued with a howl. “So he’s real proud of that.” Howard is a redhead, like her dad, but her son has white-blond hair, she noted. “It’s so strange, and my daughter’s a brunette. It’s crazy to me. I keep saying ‘We’re like Charlie’s Angels.”’

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Matt LeBlanc says he’s not sure whether he will be back for more “Top Gear. Speaking to TV critics Wednesday at an annual summer event, LeBlanc said of returning to the heart-pumping car show, “I don’t know. I’d like to. There’s nothing officially happening yet. Follow the BBC.” He said his favourite part about appearing on the series was “probably the travel,” adding that he travelled to places like South Africa, Morocco and Ireland. Last month, LeBlanc’s Top Gear co-host, Chris Evans, quit the show after a one-season revamped format and a drop in ratings after three previous hosts left the series. “That show has a pretty broad demographic. Everybody can relate to an automobile,” said LeBlanc, who is promoting his new CBS sitcom, Man with a Plan, which premieres Oct 24. He said working on the Showtime single-camera comedy Episodes had “wet my appetite, and I wanted to work more. I wanted to be a part of something bigger.” He also said he likes the work schedule of a multicamera show. In Man with a Plan, LeBlanc plays a dad who cares for his kids after his wife takes a full-time job. “This is a new thing, a new character for me, a whole new side of me and I’m looking forward to it,” he said. LeBlanc said working on the enormously popular TV sitcom “Friends” made him critical of what’s funny in TV. “I’m a joke snob. I don’t love what you call low-hanging fruit. I don’t like that kind of stuff. I tend to go for a smarter joke, and if there’s a discussion about a joke that not everyone will get it, that doesn’t scare me away from the joke. … I’d rather do jokes that take a little bit of thought.”

Graceland Hotel set to open in October ELVIS PRESLEY DREAM TO BE REALIZED

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Elvis Presley used to dream about building a guest house at his Graceland property, for friends who would visit the rock ‘n’ roll icon in Memphis. Presley didn’t get to see his dream come true, but his fans will. The Guest House at Graceland is a six-story, 450-room hotel, opening Oct. 27 just steps from Presley’s former home. The exterior, with columns, arches and a portico, evokes the feel of a comfortable Southern Colonial home, but the interior design and amenities are modern. Presley died on Aug. 16, 1977, and Graceland was eventually turned into a museum. Priscilla Presley, the singer’s former wife and a caretaker of his legacy, said Elvis had made plans to build a guest house at Graceland as far back as 1960. But it was never built, so when people visited Graceland, they would stay at a Howard Johnson’s down the street. “This luxury hotel is the most significant enhancement to Graceland since we opened in 1982,” Priscilla Presley said Monday. “This is huge … I feel that it’s just so right for fans, and our guests, and tourists.” The hotel is the first of its kind in the working- and middle-class Memphis neighbourhood of Whitehaven. Droves of applicants flocked to a job fair Saturday, and the hotel will employ about 450 people. When the hotel opens, room prices will range from $149 for basic rooms to $1,300 for the highest-priced suite. The location lets Elvis fans stay within walking distance of Graceland and the tourist attractions across the street, but it will likely attract other visitors as well. It will offer the most upscale accommodations in the immediate area, which has a Days Inn and a couple of other budget hotels. Also nearby, the aging Heartbreak Hotel is scheduled for demolition. The Guest House at Graceland also promises to become one of the city’s top lodging options, along with the Peabody and the Madison several miles away in the downtown area. “If you ever thought that you wanted to hang out with Elvis and feel like one of his guests, this is your opportunity,” said Joel Weinshanker, managing partner of Elvis Presley Enterprises, which manages the Graceland tours and also

produces and licenses Elvis-themed live events worldwide. Weinshanker said the total investment in the hotel is about $92 million. Memphis officials approved a tax break for the hotel project. The hotel is still under construction, with bulldozers outside and workers installing electric outlets and carpets. But colours associated with The King already are present, such as touches of purple and gold in the carpeting and hallways, gold lighting in the 464-seat theatre, and a picture of Elvis in a gold jacket hanging on the textured grey walls of guest rooms. At 386,000 square feet, it’s about 22 times the size of the Graceland house. “There’s not a whole lot of Elvis bling,” said Elvis Presley Enterprises CEO Jack Soden. “It’s much more subtle. It’s very cool.” The circular lobby is illuminated by natural light streaming through large windows. The lobby ceiling features mirrors shaped like elongated hexagons. The grey and purple carpet is decorated with a geometric pattern. Turn right and you get The Lobby Lounge, an eating and drinking spot with indoor and outdoor seating. Nearby is E.P.’s Bar and Grill, a sports barthemed restaurant with televisions and a pool table. A left turn from the lobby leads to another restaurant, Delta’s Kitchen, which will feature locally sourced products and a breakfast buffet. There’s also a coffee bar, and room service will be available. Beyond Delta’s Kitchen is a large ballroom and four meeting rooms. The theatre venue can be used for musical performances and company conferences. The rooms feature textured vinyl wall coverings, a glass-encased shower with a wall-mounted body spray, and sleekly designed chairs next to a window with a blackout curtain. Rooms also have a Keurig coffee brewing system and a flat screen TV. Priscilla Presley said suites will have unique themes. The King’s Suite will be designed like Elvis Presley’s master bedroom, with rich red and black tones and a custom-draped canopy bed. The property will also include a swimming pool, adding to the resort feel. “It really is quite beautiful, and it is subtle, and it is contemporary, and it’s classy,” Priscilla Presley said. “I think our guests will be very happy.”

NEW YORK — At Disney, content is king. The media conglomerate’s studio entertainment, including popular films such as the animated Finding Dory, The Jungle Book and the Marvel saga Captain America: Civil War, helped boost the company’s third-quarter profit above expectations. But The Walt Disney Co.’s cable and broadcast channel revenue growth was weaker. Disney said it will also spend $1 billion for a 33 per cent stake in the Major League Baseball video streaming service BAMTech. Media companies like Disney are trying to adapt to the increasing popularity of on-demand streaming video and “skinny bundles” — that is, cheaper, slimmed-down channel packages, some of which omit expensive channels like ESPN. In a call with analysts, CEO Bob Iger said that traditional cable packages known as “multichannel bundles” are most profitable for Disney. But he acknowledged that new digital-video options offer consumers choice and variety. “We must create or take advantage of new opportunities in ways that are complementary to our multichannel offerings,” he said. That includes an ESPN-branded streaming service Disney plans to launch sometime before the end of the year. Pricing hasn’t been determined. The new service will offer different programming that’s “complementary” to ESPN, Iger said. FILMS UP, TV DOWN It’s been a year since Iger warned that subscriptions at Disney’s key sports network ESPN might fall slightly as cable “cord-cutting” gathered steam, an announcement that tanked Disney shares. Subscribers were down about 4 per cent year over year, according to Nielsen statistics cited by BMO Capital Markets. ESPN’s impact at Disney is huge because it leads the cable-network division that accounted for nearly half of Disney’s operating income last year. Cable network revenue, including ESPN, edged up 1 per cent to $4.2 billion. At ESPN rate increases offset a decline in subscribers. Broadcast revenue rose 5 per cent to $1.71 billion. Film, by contrast, has been a standout for Disney. Revenue in that segment rose 40 per cent to $2.85 billion.

“The pattern over the last few quarters has been that the company has outperformed for studio entertainment results, and underperformed media networks,” said Nomura analyst Anthony DiClemente. “That trend is likely to continue.” BMO Capital Markets analyst Daniel Salmon also said that he expects the Burbank, California, company’s film slate to be strong this year and next. For instance, the Star Wars offshoot Rogue One is due out in December. Successful movies could help offset the “secular challenges” at Disney’s cable and network channels, he said. WE’RE GOING TO DISNEYLAND Meanwhile Disney’s theme parks had their splashiest introduction to date when Shanghai Disney opened its gates in June after a decade of negotiations, five years of construction and weeks of testing. The company hopes the Chinese attraction will help revive its struggling international theme park business. The new park should generate $1.5 billion to $4.5 billion a year in revenue, according to Drexel Hamilton analyst Tony Wible. Disney’s state-owned Chinese partner, the Shanghai Shendi (Group) Co., which owns 57 per cent of the 7.5-square-kilometre (2.9-squaremile) park, will get the lion’s share. Another possible bright spot could be an upcoming Hulu television service . Hulu, part owned by Disney, said Monday will stop offering free TV episodes as it readies a live-streaming service. Time Warner Inc. recently took a 10 per cent stake in Hulu, joining Disney, 21st Century Fox and Comcast’s NBCUniversal as co-owner. Time Warner plans to contribute some of its channels, including TNT and TBS, to the new Hulu service. It will show broadcast and cable channels in real time, without making viewers wait until the next day for episodes. “We see skinny bundles as a potentially valuable new source of distribution for ESPN and the upcoming Hulu skinny bundle (and reportedly YouTube now) can help support that,” said BMO’s Salmon. “However, skinny bundle distribution is very nascent and the contribution to overall subscriber revenue is still tiny.” Overall , Disney’s net income rose 5 per cent to $2.6 billion, or $1.62 per share, excluding one-time items. Revenue rose 9 per cent to $14.28 billion, also beating expectations.

Audacious ‘Sausage Party’ is a delicious feast BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS It’s happened. Someone has outdone the Team America puppet sex scene and even made it look somewhat quaint in comparison. Anyone even vaguely interested in the very R-rated animated film Sausage Party has likely heard whispers about the food orgy. Words can’t even begin to do this sequence justice, but I guarantee you’ve never seen anything like it in a mainstream studio movie. It’s jaw-dropping. Of course it’s compliments of the minds that blew up a foreign leader in The Interview and reveled in the comedy of rape by demon in This is the End. Yes, co-writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have used their singular and delightfully twisted imaginations once more to concoct what is easily the year’s most audacious film. And it’s packaged in animation cutesy enough for Pixar. In the grand tradition of Toy Story, Sausage Party imagines the lives of the foodstuffs in the local supermarket aisle. But it doesn’t merely anthropomorphize the food. It gives them sexuality, lust, ethnicities and even religion. Sausage Party is just as much a sweet story about belief and faith as it is a vehicle for the filthiest jokes you’ve never dared imagine. Frank (Seth Rogen), a non-descript hot dog, waits somewhat impatiently with his fellow mates to be selected by the gods (humans) to be taken to a paradise in The Great Beyond (purchased). Everyone in the store knows something good is out there waiting. The foods and condiments and sweets begin every day with a rousing song about The Great Beyond and the Gods, each putting their own spin on it (i.e. the German mustard has added a line about exterminating Juice). For Frank, it’s all about paradise and the chance to match with his soul mate Brenda (Kristen Wiig), a sexy hotdog bun with Barbie legs and a desire equal to Frank’s. They’re waiting for the gods to choose them before they act on anything. Things go awry when they are chosen. A jar of Honey Mustard (Danny McBride) that was returned to the store by a customer is so traumatized by what he’s seen “out there” that he jumps out of the cart to his death. A few follow him out of their packages to try to save him and get tossed from the cart, including Brenda, Frank, Sammy Bagel Jr. (Edward Norton, affecting his best Woody Allen), Lavash (David Krumholtz) and

And that group goes off exploring — some trying to get back to their spot in the store, some searching for the truth, and some (the Jewish bagel and Middle Eastern flatbread) waxing philosophical on the nature of belief. Those that made it to The Great Beyond, including Frank’s hot dog buddy Barry (Michael Cera), experience the horrors of dinner time. As in all Rogen and Goldberg films, no matter how raunchy, there is a big heart at the centre. It’s what distinguishes them from the anything goes satire of Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Anything goes here too, but it’s rooted in something deeper and infinitely more earnest. Sausage Party, directed by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon with co-screenwriting credits for Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir, might not be for everyone (especially kids drawn to the posters and perplexed that cute animation might not actually always be for them), but it’s a wild good time that will offend, shock and even delight. There is no one out there making comedies quite like Rogen and Goldberg. They are putting their definitive stamp on the modern American comedy one decency-smashing double entendre at a time.

LOS ANGELES — A hearing on Amber Heard’s allegations that Johnny Depp physically abused her is expected to last up to a week, prompting a judge Tuesday to delay its start. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Carl H. Moor ruled Tuesday that the hearing will begin Aug. 17, two days later than planned. Moor ordered the delay after concluding the hearing may take up to five days. The domestic violence allegations are one aspect of the actors’ contentious divorce. Heard filed to divorce Depp on May 23, and a few days later obtained a temporary restraining order after accusing the actor of repeatedly hitting her during a fight in their Los Angeles apartment. Depp’s lawyer has denied the allegations, and she said Tuesday he wants the hearing concluded as quickly as possible. “This is weighing heavily on my client,” attorney Laura Wasser said. If Heard prevails, the restraining order against Depp could be extended for up to five years. Heard wants to call Depp as a hostile witness during the proceedings. Moor ordered Heard to sit for a deposition on Friday and Depp to give sworn testimony in advance of the hearing on Saturday. Depp will not be allowed to attend Heard’s deposition, Moor ruled.

It’s called home. And when you’ve been away for too long a time, it can be difficult to find your footing — even when a longlost love is staring you right in the face. That’s the premise of “Chesapeake Shores,” a new series based on the novels of New York Times best-selling author

Sherryl Woods, and premiering Thursday, Aug. 18, on W Network. The series follows Abby O’Brien (Canadian actress Meghan Ory), a high-powered businesswoman, divorcee and mother to two young daughters, who makes a trip from New York City to her hometown of Chesapeake Shores, Md. (played beautifully by Vancouver Island and neighboring Parksville, B.C.). Her visit home brings her face to face with her past, which includes her high school sweetheart Trace (Jesse

Metcalfe), her uncompromising father Mick (Treat Williams) and her esteemed grandmother Nell (Diane Ladd). Abby realizes the toll her career has taken on her ability to be a hands-on mother to her daughters, and considers a permanent move to Chesapeake Shores. “Seems to me, if you have to be reminded not to miss something, you might be missing everything,” wise old Nell says to Abby. And when Abby realizes that she’s repeating the same

mistakes she watched her father make in an effort to provide a good life for his children, she recognizes her world is not quite the perfect fast-tracked corner office/family plan she envisioned. “It’s all a lie, I’m missing everything,” she says. If it sounds a little too romance novelish, you’re clearly not familiar with Woods’ work. Over the course of her career, the 72-year-old novelist has penned more than 140 romance and mystery novels. On

the plus side, before she turned to romance, she was a newspaper television critic, so it’s not unexpected that “Chesapeake Shores” tends to hit all the right notes in a small screen Nicholas Sparks sort of way. She’s executive producing the series, so fans of the books should expect her to keep things as close to the novels as possible. Veteran TV writer and Emmy-winner John Tinker (“Judging Amy,” “Chicago Hope”) is the showrunner, and network

brass are understandably optimistic about its chances. For her part, the 33-year-old Victoria, B.C.-born Ory, who might be best known for her work as Ruby (Red Riding Hood) on “Once Upon a Time,” appears perfectly cast as a noseto-the-grindstone New York City executive who needs a little downtime to reconnect with life on a slower pace. Interestingly enough, we get to hear Metcalfe sing in the series, as his character is a struggling country music singer.
