Labour movement looks to the future

Key to growth is reaching young people, East Kootenay District Labour Council president says Barry Coulter

The East Kootenay District Labour Council marked Canada’s 122nd Labour Day with its annual Labour Day Picnic in Rotary Park in Cranbrook, Monday, Sept. 5. Labour Council President Jackie Spain took a moment away grilling hotdogs for picnickers to reflect on where the Labour movement is at in these times, the minimum wage, and the rural-urban divide in B.C. and in Canada. Spain said the Labour movement wants to grow, like anything else, and the key to this is appealing to young people. “I’ve made that a point in my life, to talk to young people about the goods and the bads, and how to make a difference in life — a difference that’s good for employees and employers. To create win-win situations.” Health and Safety on the job is the first point of awareness for young people entering the workforce, Spain said. “I’m heavily involved in health and safety, which to me is very much a win-win for all people. Especially as we train them to certain programs, like Alive After Five, which people can bring into high

schools for free.” Under the Alive After Five program, for example, students learn about their rights under the Workers Compensation Act and OH&S Regulations and how to exercise their rights on the job, as well as the roles and responsibilities of the employer, supervisor and workers. “So young people understand their rights and what is okay to do in a place of employment, and also where they should say ‘no, we need to talk about this. This is not okay, it’s not safe.’” The upshot, Spain said, is to create a good working environment for all people — good working conditions with a decent wage. The province-wide B.C. Federation of Labour has been campaigning over the past couple of years for a $15/ hour minimum wage — something Spain sees as a necessity. “I firmly believe in the $15 an hour minimum wage,” she said. “It’s just wrong to see people working fulltime, working their guts out, trying to support kids in total poverty — there’s something amiss about that.”

The B.C. Ministry of Justice approved the charges against Winston Blackmore and James Oler in August 2014. The matter was delayed again by Justice T. Mark McEwan as Blackmore’s defence counsel announced he was unable to continue representing his client. Justice McEwan and Peter Wilson, Crown counsel for the matter, discussed the option of appointing an amicus — someone who assists the accused when they’re not eligible for legal aid.

Stetski meets with RDEK board directors Trevor Crawley

Directors with the Regional District of East Kootenay got the chance to meet with Kootenay-Columbia MP Wayne Stetski on Friday, peppering the federal representative with questions ranging from the legalization of marijuana to electoral reform. Stetski, who served on the regional board during his time as Cranbrook mayor, used his time to talk about his role as a Member of Parliament within the context of being in opposition to a Liberal majority government. Following his address, he took questions from the board, much of which centred on electoral reform and

the legalization of marijuana. “The plan is, by 2019 — the next federal election — we’d be going with proportional representation voting, rather than a first-past-thepost system,” said Stetski. “There’s been a lot of discussion in Parliament about whether there should be a referendum on that. “The position of the Liberals is that Oct. 19 [the federal election] was the referendum and when you look at the party platforms, the Liberals, the NDP and the Greens all supported changes to proportional representation voting.” A committee is currently touring Canada gathering feedback to determine what

Labour movement looks to the future Continued from page 1 Though there is certainly considerable opposition to raising the minimum wage to $15, Spain sees it as a distinct possibility for the future, especially in terms of helping keep the smaller rural B.C. communities viable and livable. “We’ve been talking about a living wage for a long time,” she said, “and I think it’s good for communities. If people can purchase, that’s good for business. It keeps people in our communities. Spain said that what’s happening now is “almost a drive to push people into the cities.” “Our Labour Council is rural, and encompasses a huge area. I’ve always maintained that we need to build our valley, to have a place where people will want to come and live. A good place to work and a good reputation. “I think it’s important that our key employers conduct themselves in that way.” Spain spends a lot of her time in Vancouver, so has a good view of both sides of the so-called urban-rural divide. “But I’ve always stood up for that rural perspective. We need it in everything, in our schools, in our health care. I’ve always believed that people should be able to go from birth to death in their communities, and not get pushed out as they age, because they don’t have the services.” The East Kootenay District Labour Council (EKDLC) represents a diverse group of public/ private sector Unions under provincial and national Labour organizations for the promotion of Labour values.

form of proportional representation to move to. Though the committee isn’t coming to Kootenay-Columbia, Stetski recently toured the riding to gather feedback from Kootenay constituents to present to the committee. “The devil really is in the details in terms of how to make proportional representation work, but the issue is, we’re about 150 years now in Canada, anywhere 37-39 per cent of Canadians have voted generally for the party that ends up with 100 per cent of the power in Ottawa,” Stetski said. Invermere mayor Gerry Taft raised his concerns that proportional representation may change the size of riding

boundaries, while Fernie mayor Mary Giuliano said she was uncomfortable with electronic voting and the potential for manipulation. Mike Sosnowski, Area A director, championed a motion to send a letter on behalf of the RDEK to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the electoral reform committee and Stetski asking for a referendum on the issue. Legalization of marijuana was also a hot topic as the federal government has committed to introduce legislation by March 2017. “It’s chaos right now in municipalities,” said Stetski. “If you’re on police forces trying to figure out what to do, the Minister of Justice says

the laws currently in place should be enforced, so you can still be arrested for possession, but if you’re in a police force, why would you do that when you know the target is to have it legalized by next March?” Canal Flats mayor Ute Juras was concerned with legalization in the context of if police have the ability to test for roadside marijuana impairment. Cranbrook Mayor Lee Pratt also brought up the application by a company hoping to set up a local medical marijuana facility that is currently going through the Health Canada approval process. Physician-assisted dying also came up, as Stetski said

the Liberal government’s legislation is currently being tested in Supreme court and wouldn’t be surprised to see it come back to Parliament for more tweaks. Stetski also said he’d be introducing a private members bill to make changes to the Navigation Protection Act and restore protection to rivers, lakes and other waterways that was removed under Conservative legislation. Later in the fall, Stetski also said he’s hoping to meet with B.C. government representatives in each of the three provincial ridings inside the federal Kootenay-Columbia riding to talk about small business issues.

Ktunaxa Salmon Festival returns Steve Hubrecht

The Ktunaxa First Nation’s annual Columbia Salmon Festival is back again this year. The festival will be, just as last year, held on the weekend following the Labour Day long weekend, on Saturday, September 10. This year is the sixth edition of the event. “It’s a free festival meant to bring awareness to the loss of salmon on the Columbia River,” said organizer Vickie Thomas. “It will have education and outreach showing the impact of the loss of salmon and the building of dams all along the river. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the history and the future of salmon in the Columbia River. The Salmon Festival is once again being spearheaded by the Canada Columbia River Inter Tribal Fisheries Commission (CCRITFC) and hosted jointly here in the Upper Columbia Valley by the Ktunaxa First Nation and the Shuswap Indian Band. The festivities will begin around 10:30 a.m. with a canoe brigade paddling from James Chabot Provincial Park

After some opening welcome remarks and speeches by dignitaries, at about 11 a.m. attention will shift to the main stage. Local First Nation magician Jeremy Coyote will kick of the activities on the stage, followed by

three musical acts, including Bison Brothers, East-West Connection, and Lonesome Jim. After the music, Ktunaxa elder and traditional storyteller Joe Pierre will take to the stage, telling stories and legends. The performance will then be capped by the Ktunaxa Nation dance troupe. The interpretive

Salmon Pavilion, showcasing the story of salmon in the Columbia River, will be back again this year, set up in the festival grounds near the stage. Once the stage activities finish, around 4:30 p.m., the Shuswap band is inviting everybody up for a free salmon feast and pow-wow at the

large white tent on Capilo Way (off Highway 93/95 between Radium Hot Springs and Invermere). Those wanting to learn more can check out the festival’s website at www.ColumbiaSalmonFest.ca or can call CCRITFC at 250-4173474.

Pre-Season Scouting Pays Off S

F.J. Hurtak

ince writing the books ‘Elk Hunting in the Kootenays’ and ‘Hunting the Antlered Big Game of the Kootenays’, I have been asked many questions concerning elk and elk hunting. That makes sense as elk are really one of the most popular species to hunt in our region. In the province over 25,000 elk licenses are sold every year and I think it’s fair to say that a high percentage of them are sold in the Kootenays. The most commonly asked question I seem to get is usually “Where do you hunt”? Like most hunters, when that question is posed, I get that glazed look in my eyes, and I personally always an-

swer the same way. “Where the elk are of course.” Although it’s obvious I am being vague, there’s a distinct element of truth to my statement. My various hunting partners and I, have had a reasonable amount of success in harvesting good quality bulls for a variety of reasons, the most important of which is having good quality elk spots. Location, location, location, as many a real estate agent has been prone to saying. The areas we hunt cover hundreds of square kms/miles as far north as the Findley, and south to the US/ Canada border. That’s an immense piece of real estate for certain, but over the years I have been

able to narrow it down to a handful or two of great spots. The other thing is, I am always in search of new areas as well. Old hot spots can fade for a lot of reasons. These days some formerly wonderful high country elk spots are completely devoid of elk. For instance, I had one place deep in the woods, away from road areas, that would produce some action every season. There was a small trickle of water seeping into a muddy, grassy area at the base of a hill. Bull elk would always be somewhere around this area in the early fall, and had established a small wallow at the confluence of 2 trails. A few years ago I made a pre-season trip Stock quotes as of Closing 09/01/16

Scouting the high country before the hunting seasson can pay big dividends. to the area before the rifle season was to begin on September 10th. I fully expected I would see a myriad of fresh elk tracks and sign. To my complete surprise, the area was totally barren of any sign whatsoever and the wallow was dry. I decided to take a closer look, and part way up the hill, I no-

ticed that a large pine tree had fallen victim to a strong wind storm sometime during the winter or spring. The tree had blown across the tiny stream and diverted the water in the opposite direction of what once was the wallow. The elk now had little reason to spend time in this location.

Fortunately I had at least two other proven elk producing spots within 10 kms (six miles) of this area. In one of those spots which I had also pre-scouted, I located a small 6x6 bull on opening day of rifle season. I decided to pass on that bull, because it wasn’t what I was looking for, but I knew he

was there from all the sign I had found just a couple of weeks before. The bull appeared to be alone so I decided to let him be and the very next day I was about 150 kms (90 miles) away, hunting in another area where I had located some elk on another scouting trip.

Local NEWS Polygamy trial delayed again Police making fun arrests for local kids Continued from page 1

The case was pushed back till Oct. 17 for another hearing in Vancouver, while discussions also included shifting the upcoming trial to Nelson, which has a more modern courthouse than Cranbrook, according to Justice McEwan. The issue dates back to 2005,

when the RCMP first began investigating allegations of polygamy in Bountiful, south of Creston. In 2011, the B.C. Supreme Court ruled that the polygamy law is constitutional after the province appointed three special prosecutors to pursue charges. However, another RCMP in-

vestigation resulted in the current charges for Blackmore and Oler, along with other child-related charges for other individuals from Bountiful. Those charges are being prosecuted in a separate trial that is set to begin in Cranbrook on Oct. 24th in Cranbrook Supreme Court.

Pre-hunting season scouting Continued from page 4 This “mobile” style of hunting has been a key element in my elk hunting successes year after year. I try not to spend my entire hunting trip in areas where there are few elk, even though most of my spots have produced at times in previous seasons. It sounds so simple I know, but you’d be surprised at how many times I have talked to other hunters and heard them say, “We spent 10 days in this drainage, and saw only two cow elk and a cow moose,” or something similar. So, you’ve probably gathered by now that I spend as much time as I can pre-scouting, searching for new areas and of course checking the old. When the bow or rifle season comes around, I already have a pretty good idea of where I’m going to start looking for my bull, and then I systematically work my spots until I locate a good representative of the species. I usually start with a proven location first,

then perhaps move to one of the new spots I may have discovered while scouting. More often than not, I do cover a lot of territory before, and IF I harvest a bull. The system I’ve outlined works for my partners and me and yes, it demands a lot of time and effort in the field before the hunting season actually begins. I’m blessed with the good fortune of having the time to invest in my method of elk hunting which is mostly done by back-packing on foot into the wilderness. I fully realize that many hunters, particularly non-residents of the Kootenays, cannot make the

commitment of time. However, regardless of your style and method of elk hunting I think most would agree that having more than one or two good elk spots in a given region, and spending as much time as you can scouting, will certainly increase the odds for harvesting a bull this season. Cops for Kids are rolling into Cranbrook as a part of their annual Cops for Kids Ride on September 14th, and they’ve got some business to tend to while they’re in town. The RCMP charity has partnered with the Tamarack Centre to send some otherwise law-abiding citizens to the slammer, in the name of helping children on Wednesday, September 14. Suspects will be arrested by off-duty police officers and taken to Tamarack Centre, where they’ll be tried by the presiding judge and face some time behind bars to fundraise their bail by calling friends and family to help them out of a sticky situation. Donations made to Cops for Kids will count towards the perpetrator’s bail, and upon reaching their goal, they’ll be released from the kangaroo court. Money raised from this event will help Cops for Kids fund much needed medical equipment, therapy, learning and mobility aids for local children.

“I realize the importance of giving back to such a strong local charity,” said manager Linda Birch. “Tamarack Centre has partnered with Cops for Kids for many years and we’re looking forward to another successful event. The annual Jail & Bail is a fun way for us to raise money to help kids with items that aren’t covered by government or other local agencies. If you’d like to snitch on a friend or coworker, or even nominate yourself, we’d love to lock you up in our jail for a while.” The Cops for Kids team is looking forward to the 1st annual event. “We still need more jailbirds to help us reach our aggressive fundraising goal. It?s overwhelming the number of families that need assistance, and we?re proud that we’ve been able to assist so many in their struggles,” claims Cops for Kids supporter Cpl. Chris Newel. If you, or someone you know might be deserving of a “summons,” please visit www.copsforkids.org or call 250.426.2231 to arrange their arrest.

Is Islamic State really losing?

T

he word on the streets is that Islamic State (ISIS or ISIL to its many enemies) is going under. In January it lost control of the city of Ramadi in Iraq after a long siege; in June it also lost Fallujah. In March it lost Palmyra to Syrian government troops, and last month it lost Manbij in northern Syria to the US-backed Syrian Kurds after another long siege. These are all places that ISIS took in mid-2014 in its initial surge of conquests (which ended with the proclamation of the Islamic State), or in the subsequent year of slower advances that ended with the capture of Ramadi and Palmyra in May 2015. Since then it has been nothing but retreats — and last week Turkey entered the ground war in Syria as well, to fight Islamic State and “other terrorists”. To cap it all, Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, the closest associate of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi and the man who proclaimed him to be the head of a revived Caliphate (“Islamic State”) only 26 months ago, was killed in a US air strike on 30 August. He was the organisation’s chief propagandist and a senior operational commander, and he will be missed. But the streets on which “the word” about Islamic State’s impending defeat is being heard are in Washington, not in the Middle East. People on the ground know that things have not been going well for Islamic State recently, but they remember that just one year ago it was Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria that was teetering on the brink of collapse. Russia’s military intervention in Syria last September saved Assad, and it will probably be the Turkish military intervention in Syria this year that saves Islamic

State. Not that President Recep Tayyib Erdogan loves Islamic State — he used to let it use Turkey as a transit route for recruits and supplies, but that largely stopped a year ago — but he doesn’t see it as Turkey’s main enemy. For Erdogan, the big threat is the secession of the south-east corner of the country where Kurds (20 percent of Turkey’s population) are the local majority. All the counGwynne tries next to that corner of Turkey (Iran, Iraq and Dyer Syria) also have Kurdish majorities living along the border, and the Turkish nightmare is for one of those areas to become an independent Kurdish-ruled state That is exactly what has been happening in northern Syria. The Syrian Kurds made themselves available to Washington as America’s main ally on the ground, and with huge help from American air strikes their army has driven Islamic State back all along the border. It now controls a deep strip of territory along 80 percent of Syria’s border with Turkey, a proto-state that the Kurds call Rojava. This is entirely Erdogan’s fault. If he had been loyal to Turkey’s alliance with the United States and closed the border with Syria, neither Islamic State or the rival Islamist movement, the Nusra Front, would have grown to dominate the entire Syrian rebel movement. But he didn’t close it, because he was so keen to overthrow Assad that he backed anybody who was fighting against him. Faced with the threat of an Islamist-ruled Syria, Washington made a de facto alliance with the Syrian Kurds, and they have served it well in the fight against Islamic State. But that just makes them a

bigger threat in Erdogan’s eyes, and so he sent his army into Syria last week. Not very deep into Syria so far, and of course to justify this intervention to the United States Erdogan has said that it is to fight “Islamic State and other terrorists”. But since Turkey always officially refers to Washington’s Kurdish allies in Syria as “terrorists”, it doesn’t take great geopolitical insight to figure out who Turkey’s main target is. Islamic State is well aware of this, which is why it evacuated the border town of Jarablus, where the Turkish army crossed into Syria, without a fight. Why not just step aside and let the Turks make contact with their real target, the Syrian Kurdish army, without wasting everybody’s time? Contact has now been made, and Turkey is busily shelling and bombing Kurdish-led forces in Manbij, the next town south from Jarablus. The coming months will probably see a steady expansion of Turkey’s offensive against the Syrian Kurds, and a corresponding drop in the latters’s military effort against Islamic State. Naively (or was it just fake naivete?), US Secretary of State Ash Carter called on Turkey to stay focused on the fight against Islamic State and not to engage the Kurds. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim curtly replied that “operations will continue until all terrorist elements have been neutralised, until all threats to our borders, our lands and our citizens are completely over.” So the Syrian Kurds will be busy fighting the Turks, and Islamic State will survive. It is an iron rule of Middle Eastern politics that everbody always betrays the Kurds eventually – and Washington will too. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist published in 45 countries.

What’s Up?

Letters to the Editor Bud Abbott

Referring to the new book release article in the Townsman, August 30, I was surprised, but not really sorry, to see that Bud Abbott was not among the few local veterans still alive. I have not seen an obituary, and was certainly not expecting to attend a service, but would like to know where to send my condolences. Yours insincerely, Bud Abbott Cranbrook

Fear based campaigning

David Wilks’ letter to the editor (Townsman, August 30) was most aptly titled “Misinformation”. His campaign of “Fear the NDP and Vote for me” has started. For the record, the BC NDP supports resource industry jobs. As leader John Horgan stated “Our past and our future will be dependent on the development of natural resources” (CBC News, April 12, 2016). The NDP is a party of working people. A healthy resource industry sector – forestry, mining, agriculture – is critical to the economic well being of this province. In 2016, it is important for polit-

ical parties to discuss and debate matters pertaining to the economy and the environment and how to manage natural resources sustainably. Mr. Wilks needs to respect the intelligence of Kootenay East voters and end his campaign of “Be afraid. Vote for me.” Norma Blissett Cranbrook

Sammy the Dog

My heartfelt thanks to everyone who generously gave donations to the Steeples Veterinarian Clinic for my little dog Sammy, and thank you to my neighbours who have helped me so much and have been there for me. Sammy is much better, but still may have to have another operation to close the wound in his side. God bless you all; Mavis and Sammy Cranbrook Editor’s Note: Mavis Kennedy’s little dog Sammy was attacked by a loose dog and badly hurt on Sunday, August 20, in Cranbrook

B.C. promotes poverty and crime BC Views Tom Fletcher The B.C. government is getting ready to roll out its master plan for social housing, having set up a $75 million fund, with more to come from its new foreign-buyer tax. Poverty and homelessness are shaping up to be Premier Christy Clark’s main theme for the 2017 election, turning the page from a natural gas-fired industrial expansion that isn’t likely to arrive in time. And there are reasons for that. Aside from the social housing spending spree guided by Housing Minister Rich Coleman in recent years, Clark has presided over an aggressive employment support program for single parents on income assistance, along with an overdue increase to disability assistance recipients. The NDP has focused on a factually challenged urban campaign about charging for bus passes, and continues to promote the failed socialist notion that a five-year plan for poverty reduction will fix everything. Poverty causes crime too, right? Everyone learns that in our modern welfare state, and it’s a bedrock NDP belief. I received a couple of snide replies to last week’s column, in which I mentioned British psychiatrist Theodore Dalrymple’s questioning of this orthodox idea. After working in an inner-city London hospital and prison for years, Dalrymple came to the conclusion that crime is not an inevitable re-

Crack smokers in an alley in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. sult of economic inequality and the greed of the rich. Rather, he writes, “the cause of crime is the decision of criminals to commit it.” Indeed, if poverty were the cause of crime, then most, if not all, poor people would be criminals. Looking at the shelter-camper-drug user-thief epidemic that has taken root in many B.C. communities, and the government and media reaction to it, a stranger would conclude that drug addiction is the main cause of crime. And since drug abuse is deemed to be a disease rather than a choice, the health care system is scrambling to hand out needles and catch up with overdoses from potent new street drugs. The Vancouver media report on clusters of overdoses on “Welfare Wednesday,” as if spreading out the distribution of money would be an im-

provement. And there is growing enthusiasm that supervised injection sites will soon spread beyond Vancouver, where no expense is spared to support the ever-rising, seldom-recovering population of addicts. Vancouver is pioneering “tenant-proof” social housing with easier-to-repair floors and walls, and bathrooms with central drains so the whole room can be washed down. Just wreck the place, people, the taxpayers will clean up after you. One reader was offended by my reference to the loss of social order that used to be provided by family, religion and work among what the British frankly call the lower classes. Most Western countries have experienced this. In B.C. the surge of street people is mostly feral males. Not that long ago, most of these guys could have found work in a bush camp, coming to town

to blow their paycheques and then heading out again for an enforced stretch of abstinence and exercise. Those jobs are gone, and now it’s the nanny state’s turn. A Chilliwack reader tells me she now considers Coleman to be a leading figure of the enabling left, buying flophouses and transitional housing that even includes catered meals. The question I keep asking is, transitioning to what? If the Downtown Eastside is the model, there’s little evidence of recovery. A staffer at the Insite injection facility was once caught offering to train a self-described newbie how to shoot heroin. I’ll be watching the housing plan to see if there is any strategy beyond containment and catering. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

SLOW DOWN, MOVE OVER: HELP KEEP OUR ROADSIDE AND EMERGENCY WORKERS SAFE

TRAFFIC SAFETY IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF ALL: CRANBROOK RCMP

Roadside maintenance workers and emergency staff are out all year round and it is important for drivers to be aware of their presence, slow down and move over to give them the space they need to be safe.

Roadways are a very dynamic environment with situations and circumstances that can change quickly. There is great potential for injury and property damage if drivers are not obeying the rules of the road.

The City of Cranbrook has many staff members, especially from Public Works, working on our streets year round and not just in the warmer months. This isn’t limited to just Public Works staff but also Fire Services, RCMP and Ambulance staff, other emergency workers and tow truck operators. When driving through the City and you see vehicles with flashing red, blue or yellow lights, please be aware that workers are present. Reduce your speed and allow extra space when passing the vehicles or accident scene, where it is safe to do so.

Signs and signals such as school zones, stop, yield signs and traffic lights are only a few tool used to assist drivers in keeping safe while they navigate City streets. In order for these signs and signals to work, they first need to be seen then obeyed. Please be aware of and respect all traffic signage and signals when driving all year. Make sure our streets are safe for everyone! A Message from the Cranbrook RCMP and the City of Cranbrook.

The Kimberley Dynamiters took on the Golden Rockets in their final exhibit game of the pre-season, Friday, Sept. 2. The Nitros prevailed with a 4-3 overtime victory in the match-up took place at Western Financial Place in Cranbrook. The Dynamiters’ 2016/17 regular season gets underway Friday, September 9, against the arch-rival Fernie Ghostriders.

Pre-Season was a success for Dynamiters J o s h Lo c k h a r t

The Kimberley Dynamiters have finished their pre-season schedule with a 1-1-0 record. The first exhibition game was a 5-2 loss in Creston against the Thunder Cats, and the win coming in overtime against the Golden Rockets. Head Coach & General Manager Derek Stuart says “For the most part, both games went well. I told the players before each game that the outcome is meaningless. “What is more important right now and what we are interested in is the player’s ac-

tions, and what they were asked to do during the game. Overall, actions were very good, played in the right way.” The first exhibition game was against the 2016 Cyclone Taylor Cup Creston Valley Thunder Cats. Their roster featured over five returning KIJHL players, while the Nitro’s started three. “On Wednesday we had two lulls, one at the start of the game, and the next for the first sixto-seven minutes of the second,” Stuart recalls. The Thunder Cats had played the night before against Beaver Valley Nitehawks, and

appeared to find their skating legs sooner than the debuting Dynamiters. “We did take it to them physically, everyone was finishing their checks. We played really well five-on-five.” By the conclusion of the match Kimberley was outscored 5-2, and outshot 37-23. On Friday the Dynamiters hosted the Golden Rockets at the Western Financial Place in Cranbrook. Stuart said there was a lot excitement as “the players really liked being in a WHL rink.” Overall, Stuart was pleased with the per-

“It’s a difficult time of year for the players and me. As a coach you build a relationship with the players and then players come and go.” Derek Stuart Gead Coach/GM formance Friday. “We made it tough for Golden to get to the front of the net.” There was a lot of local support as nearly 500 fans showed up to

watch the Dynamiters win 4-3 in OT. “The coaching staff, and executive are extremely pleased with the turnout. This is definitely something we will look at doing in the future.” Looking ahead, the roster has been trimmed right down to 21 players. “I’m hopeful for a few more players between now and the start of the regular season. It’s a difficult time of year for the players and me. As a coach you build a relationship with the players and then players come and go.

“The roster on opening day will not be the same three to four months from now. The guys on the roster now have earned their spot and we are comfortable with them.” The Dynamiters are still carrying six defencemen, and are waiting for the results of Junior A cuts. The goal for the Nitro’s has been to move players on, “You hope they make it, if not we will welcome them back.” Stuart and the team are looking forward to starting the regular season, especially against Eddie Mountain division rivals, the Fernie

Ghostriders. “I am hopeful for a big crowd, the players feed off the energy.” Match Sticks: There are no injuries to report. The Nitro’s iced two new skaters against the Rockets, forward Garreth Osmar (’98) and defenseman Connor Sullivan (’98). Osmar is a Cranbrook native who played last season with the Calgary Royals; prior to joining the Dynamiters he was trying out for the West Kelowna Warriors. Sullivan, standing 6’3”, is from Red Deer, and played last year with the Red Deer Elks.

Cranbrook area athletes get FACE program grant Fo r th e Town s man

Katie Anderson and Tristen Chernove have joined one of the most prestigious athletic clubs in Canada. A total of 52 young Canadian athletes from 39 different summer and winter sports selected by Petro Canada to receive a Fuelling Athletes and Coaching Excellence (FACE) Program grant. Past recipients include Olympic and Paralympic medallists Patrick Chan (SILVER, figure skating), Hayley Wickenheiser (GOLD, hockey), Kaitlyn Lawes (GOLD, curling), Marielle Thompson (GOLD, ski cross), Mac Marcoux (GOLD, Para alpine skiing), Rosie MacLennan (GOLD, Trampoline) and Mark Tewksbury, (GOLD, Swimming). Developed by Petro-Canada, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC), and facilitated

by their National Sport partners, the FACE Program supports up-andcoming athletes when they need it most: when they are striving to represent Canada at the Olympic or Paralympic Games, but don’t yet qualify for government funding. Recipients are selected based on potential. The funding is courtesy of Petro Canada. The “Tomorrow’s Team Canada” media tagline and campaign aired during the recent 2016 Summer Games in Rio. Since 1988, Petro-Canada has supported more than 2,700 athletes on their way to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Every year, 52 promising athletes from across Canada are awarded a $10,000 Fuelling Athlete and Coaching Excellence (FACETM) grant, shared with their coaches, to help them along their journey. To date, $9.5 million in direct fi-

Panorama reaches shortlist for best resort on continent Steve Hubrecht

Columbia Valley Pioneer Panorama Mountain Resort has been shortlisted for one of the most prestigious awards in the ski industry. The ski hill near Invermere is one of four resorts to make the shortlist for the 2016 World Snow Awards’ North American resort of the year. Its Ski and Ride Centre is also one of seven shortlisted in the Awards’ Snowsports School of the Year category. “We’re incredibly proud to be named among resorts we regard as the best in the business. This nomination is a reflection of work in many areas, but really revolves around our efforts to improve the experience our guest has both on the mountain and in the village,” said Panorama chief executive officer Steve Paccagnan. “More than $10 million has been invested here since 2013 and this has been recognized by the World Snow Awards. At the same time, our sales team has been very active in international markets such as the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia. In those places, Panorama is now considered as one of the leading resort destinations in North America.” Panorama media specialist Clarissa Amaro told The Pioneer that the resort has previously been shortlisted for World Snow Awards in categories such as Best Family Resort and Best Up-and-Coming Resort, but this is the first time it’s made the shortlist in the headline category of Best Resort (there is one award for best Eu-

ropean resort and one for best North America resort). “It really is quite prestigious, and it’s a tremendous honour for us to be shortlisted along with resorts such as Whistler, Tremblant and Breckenridge (the other three on the North American shortlist). Those are all huge resorts, and not too long ago we were fairly unknown on the international stage, so to now be up there with those places is amazing,” said Ms. Amaro. The World Snow Awards are international in scope and based in the United Kingdom, she said, adding that although there are a few similar awards based in North America, they are all much smaller in scope and the World Snow Awards are hands-down the highest honours in the ski industry. “It’s the best of the best,” she said. The Snowsports School Category is new this year and is decided by online voting. The best North American resort and best European resort will be decided by a panel of judges comprised of leading ski industry personalities. The award winners will be announced on the first day of the Telegraph Ski and Snowboard Show in London on October 27th. “It’s a big black tie event with hundreds of people; it would be really exciting if we won,” said Ms. Amaro. To vote online for Panorama’s Ski and Ride Centre in the Awards’ Snowsports School category, visit www.worldsnowawards.co.uk/public-voting-2016.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Deal with others directly. You might sense where someone is coming from, and it could force your hand in some way. Know when to take the lead in a professional situation. You will feel more secure if you are in charge. Will others? Tonight: You decide what you need. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You naturally defer to others, especially if they are demanding and critical. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You could be on top of a situation before you even realize it. Your mind allows you to look

Dear Annie by Annie Lane

mixing friends Dear Annie: I recently started seeing this girl -- “Lisa.” We met through a mutual friend -- who turned out to be pretty much our only mutual friend. Our social circles couldn’t be more different. A lot of her friends are 20-somethings who don’t have to work because their parents are still supporting them. They’re into partying, staying up all night, taking drugs that enable them to stay up all night, etc. I haven’t really been able to click with any of them, even the guy friends. They don’t have much to talk about except for whatever bar they’re checking out that night. Sometimes I meet up with them straight from work, still in my office clothes, and they make snide comments. They wear expensive clothes and name-drop designers as if I’m supposed to be impressed, but I don’t know or care what they’re talking about. Lisa is pretty much the only one in that group who has a job, and she doesn’t do drugs or even drink much, but she enjoys going out. When I’ve tentatively brought up some of these traits to her, she says she thinks her friends are funny. She admits some of them can be a little rude at times, but she always insists “they mean well.” My friends all work and, for the most part, would prefer a movie night at someone’s house to a club. (I’m the same way, although I like going out occasionally.) They’re a downto-earth group. I cringe at the thought of introducing my group of friends to Lisa’s. It would be like oil and water. What do you think? Could it still work? -- Apprehensive Dear Apprehensive: Self-help guru Jim Rohn has made the claim that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. Though that might not be a scientific fact, the essence of the statement is true. The company we keep is an expression of our values. If you don’t like this girl’s friends, then my guess is that when you get to know her better, you won’t like her. Even if you find you really do like her, there will most likely be problems, because it’s important you like the friends of the person you’re dating. If you don’t like them, you’ll come to resent it whenever she spends time with them. You’ll be unhappy; she’ll be unhappy. That’s not the stuff of a healthy, harmonious relationship. Consider moving on. Dear Annie: I belong to a social collectors club that meets and has open houses throughout the year. We have potluck luncheons at all of our meetings. One of our members always gets in line first and piles his plate high with portions that are two or three times larger than normal. He gulps down his food and gets back in line for seconds before the complete group has been through the line. Usually, he is the last one in line and finishes whatever is left. We are all financially comfortable, so money to buy food is not an issue. Over the past several years, we have tried to speak with him a few times about not getting in line for seconds until everyone has gone through the line once. Everyone is talking about this behind his back. We’re worried because the holidays are coming up and we will have lots of open houses. We would appreciate any suggestions you have to stop his behavior. -- Not a Buffet Dear Not a Buffet: This man is treating your potlucks more like a high-school cafeteria (and he’s eating like someone with the metabolism of a teenager). You might consider making a general announcement at the start of the event, asking the attendees to please refrain from having seconds until everyone has had a chance to get a plate and begin eating. If he still tries to go for it, people might feel more comfortable stopping him if the ground rules were blatantly laid out just a few minutes prior. Good luck. Fatality on FSR near Fernie The Free Press

The Elk Valley RCMP have confirmed one fatality as the result of an accident on the Elk River Forest Service Road. At 6:20 a.m., the RCMP were notified of a loaded logging truck had rolled over down a steep embankment on the Elk River Forest Service Road. Ac-

cording to the RCMP, the accident happened near the 30-km marker. “The driver and lone occupant of the truck was reportedly trapped in the vehicle and has since been confirmed deceased,” read the RCMP’s statement, released Friday afternoon. The statement said that

RCMP and emergency services’ attempts to extricate the driver’s body were made more difficult due to the dangerous terrain at the accident scene. Police are continuing their investigation, but they do believe road conditions may have been a factor in the incident.

B.C. plots strategy for wood products exports Tom Fle tcher Black Press

Getting better access for value-added wood products in Asia and the U.S. is a big part of a new B.C. government wood industry competition strategy. The strategy includes seeking exemptions from trade quotas for specialty lumber and wood products in a new softwood lumber agreement with the U.S., which expired last fall. A pilot project is proposed to help smaller value-added producers market in the U.S. Forests Minister Steve Thomson said discussions between Canada and the U.S. for a new agreement are “intense and ongoing,” but preparations are being made to defend against U.S. trade actions that could begin after a one-year standstill period expires Oct. 12. “I think it’s fair to say that we

are still significantly apart in terms of what we feel needs to be in the agreement as compared to the current U.S. position, but that work continues,” Thomson said. “For us it’s not an agreement at any cost. It’s got to work for BC, and for Canada.” According to customs data reported last week by Seattle-based Wood Resources International, Canada’s wood exports by value were down 18 per cent for the first six months of 2016, with a shift to U.S. sales in the absence of a softwood lumber quota. “The biggest change in the past year has been the substantial decline in Canadian shipments of softwood lumber to China because of sawmills in British Columbia directing their sales to the healthy U.S. market,” Wood Resources International said in its latest quarterly report. Susan Yurkovich, president of

the Council of Forest Industries, said inventory data from China is difficult to obtain, but it remains a key market for B.C. producers. Rick Jeffery, president of the Coast Forest Products Association, said the B.C. industry’s China strategy is to move beyond low-value lumber. “A big part of this plan includes exporting our building systems technologies and building product technologies into countries like China to help them build more with wood in multi-residential and non-residential kinds of applications, which is good for trade and also good for the environment because of the carbon capturing nature of wood products,” Jeffery said. “We’re hopeful that our strategy will give us increased market share in China as the Chinese economy rebounds.”

1904 Evidence of growth … The action of a railroad company in a town is a pretty good criterion by which to judge of the faith of that corporation in the future of the place. The C. P. R. like all other transportation companies, never throws away money and therefore when it makes improvements in the way of additions to its facilities, it is simply because there is need for them. This is the case in Cranbrook at the present time. The work at the shops has increased so that there is a demand for more room and more machinery. To meet this demand a crew of men under the direction of Mr. Alton, superintendent of bridges and buildings, is now preparing the foundation for an extension of sixty feet to the workshop and twelve feet to the round house to accommodate the larger class of engines. These additions naturally mean more men employed and an increased pay roll for Cranbrook. What a party … Last Monday was Cranbrook’s greatest day. Since the town first started some seven years ago, there have been innumerable celebrations, some years too many, other years none at all. The celebrations of the past have all been successful, some more than others. But Labor Day this year in Cranbrook was the climax of concentrated effort and glorious success. The day dawned bright and beautiful, which made glad the hearts of the people generally, and especially the committee that had worked so long and unselfishly for the success of the celebration. And at an early hour the streets were filled with people, as several hundred had come in the day before to see the town, see the people, and enjoy one day in Cranbrook before the big rush. On Monday the special train from Kimberley was the first to arrive, and so many passengers crowded the platform immediately after the train stopped that naturally one was impressed with the idea that the towns of Marysville and Kimberley were deserted for the day. A few minutes after the Kimberley train had been switched into the yards the Moyie train whistled. When that crowd began to fill up the platform, there was ample evidence that there was a crowd in town. Each person from Moyie, and there were nearly 800 of them, was decorated with a white badge with a red top, and the magic word “Moyie” printed across the face. And what a jolly crowd it was, good natured men and good natured women, and enthusiastic children. The Moyie ball team, the bunch of kid ball players that is defeating everything that has the nerve to meet

them, were soon in evidence. From the east, on the regular passenger train, came people from Mayook, Wardner, Jaffray, Elko, Morrissey and Fernie. They had left their home towns to come to Cranbrook for the day and enjoy themselves, and they did so in a manner that reflected credit upon themselves. From Perry Creek, Staples Mills, Fort Steele and other nearby places they came on horse and in carriages, until by ten o’clock it seemed after glancing at the two great walls of humanity that banked Baker street on each side waiting for the parade, that the entire population of the district was in Cranbrook for the day. And from early that morning until late at night, with contests of all kinds, with the rivalry between towns aroused during the events, with everybody full of enthusiasm, and later in the day some with more than enthusiasm, there was not a single disturbance, not a fight, nothing that would reflect discredit upon any one of the hundreds of visitors or the people at home. Good nature prevailed, good sense predominated, and in consequence a good time for all was the fruit of the day. Caught … A locomotive engineer on the Moose Jaw section of the C.P.R. was recently arrested at Moose Jaw and is awaiting trial for taking a drink of liquor when on duty. It is the intention of company to prosecute this case to the utmost extent of the law. The hotel keeper at Qu’Appelle who sold the liquor was heavily fined on being brought before the magistrate. Drilling contest … The Herald has been notified that a purse of $100 has been raised in Moyie for a drilling contest to take place there on the 24th of this month, for the miners of East Kootenay. The Moyie boys evidently want to give the North Star boys another try. Still a disgrace … It is a crying shame that the sidewalks in Cranbrook are not repaired. The excuse that there is no money in the treasury for any such work is a might poor one in view of the fact that this town pays such large amounts in taxes. A few dollars judiciously spent now and then would keep the streets in good order. There are government expenses that might well be cut off so that the walks would not be a daily menace to life and limb. It is a good chance for someone in authority to see that the repairs are kept up. The people built the sidewalks by public subscription, and the least that the government can do is to keep them in repair. Son of Robert Mathers drowned ... The sixteen-year-old son of Robert Mathers was drowned last Monday while riding a horse across the St Marys near its mouth. The body was recovered later in the Kootenay River. What next … George Wales,

Dancing parties for the young ladies, before they leave for school. the Wardner philosopher and eccentric delineator of the follies of human nature, was in town the first of the week. Mr. Wales is now making a study of the peculiarities of French, English, Scotch, Irish and American humor and will probably compile the result of his observations into a volume deluxe for his friends. 1905 Gill gets two years … For the second time within a little over a month James Gill, former bookkeeper and confidential clerk of V. Hyde Baker, of Cranbrook, came before his honor judge Forin yesterday on a criminal charge. On the first occasion Gill was accused of stealing $500, money paid into Me. Baker’s office on the sale of some East Kootenay lands and received and retained by Gill. W. R. Ross appeared for the accused in this instance and made a strong plea for leniency. It was stated that restitution had been made and that the prisoner, who pleaded guilty, had a previous good record. Gill had run away from Cranbrook but had been captured and brought back for trial. The learned judge on this occasion allowed Gill to go on suspended sentence after lecturing him soundly on his gambling propensities. Some resentment was shown over this treatment of the case, and six more charges of stealing were brought by Mr. Baker, the sums aggregating $558.80. Gill was again arrested, this time at Vancouver, brought back to Cranbrook and sent up for trial by the magistrate there. The case came up a week ago last Monday, when Gill elected for a speedy trial and the hearing was adjourned until yesterday. W. R. Ross of Fernie, again appeared for the prisoner and put in a plea of guilt on his behalf. W. A. Macdonald, K. appeared on behalf of the private prosecution, V. Hyde Baker, also being in attendance. His honor sentenced Gill to two years in the provincial penitentiary in New Westminster on each of the six charges, the sentences to run concurrently. By

good behavior Mr. Gill can reduce his time to about 22 months. He was badly broken up when he was sentenced, and afterward said that he did not care for himself, were it not for his family. Oh my … We are informed by a neighboring publication that Alberta is about to “cast off her baby clothes and don long pants.” All we have to say about it is that she is a bold, brazen young huzzy to allow the mysteries of her lingerie to become public property. Ouch … R. Morland met with a very painful accident one day last week. He was at work on his ranch and was endeavoring to catch one of his young colts, and as he had done frequently before caught it by the tail, but this time the colt kicked at him and one foot struck him on the left eye. Fortunately, the eye was but little injured, although the blow bruised the flesh around it badly. Under Dr. Elliot’s care he is rapidly recovering and will return to work in a few days. Light poles … D. McRae has received a contract for four car-loads of electric light poles for the town of Indian Head and two carloads for the town of Frank. Mr. Birnie is busy getting out the poles at Morrissey. The forests of the Elk valley produce the best poles for such purposes obtainable anywhere and no doubt a considerable trade will be developed. Prof. Hepburn’s dancing class ... Prof. Hepburn entertained a number of former friends and many new ones at Wentworth hall last evening, and enrolled a large class for dancing instruction. From indications it is quite evident that Mr. Hepburn will have a larger class this season than he had when here before. Mr. Hepburn will give two lessons a week and an assembly on Wednesday evening. Those who are unable to be present each night, private lessons will be given to make up the loss so that the

full number will have been given at the close of the season. Great interest is manifested in the work as there are many who feel that it is an exceptional opportunity to learn the basis of dancing properly, and old heads, as well as young, are taking advantage of it. Instruction will be given to the juvenile class at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoons, and a special invitation is extended to the mothers to be present. Prof. Hepburn will also organize classes in Fernie and Moyie. Dancing party … Mr. and Mrs. A. Leitch gave a large dancing and card party last Thursday evening at their commodious home in honor of Miss Rhoda who has just returned, and Misses Lou and Ella who are to leave tomorrow for Calgary to enter school. Mr. Leitch said that he was anxious to celebrate the gathering of his family as they had not all been at home at one time for several years. They were disappointed in the failure of A. K. Leitch arriving, as he could not get away from Jaffray. There is not a more hospitable home in this section than the Leitch’s, and this was demonstrated again by the enjoyable time spent by everyone present that evening. Along the road leading to the residence fancy lanterns were hung to light the guest on his or her way, and on the lawn a large dancing platform had been placed which was lighted by a number of electric lights. The music was stationed on the front verandah, while the large living room was given up to those who preferred to sit and chat or watch the dancers. In other rooms were cards, while one room was set apart for the gentlemen and the inevitable cigar. Dancing was indulged in until about twelve, and then refreshments were served, after which dancing was resumed. It was late before the last guest had said good night, and it was with regret that any took their departure, as the evening had been a most pleasant one.
