It’s been a whirlwind weekend for Tristen Chernove, who can add some new hardware to an ever-growing trophy case with a silver and bronze medal at the Rio de Janeiro velodrome. Chernove captured his first-ever Paralympic medal on Friday afternoon in the 3000-metre C2 Individual Pursuit, finishing with a time of 3.47.41 — just three seconds over the gold medal winner, Liang Guihua of China. “It’s wonderful to be on the podi-

It’s wonderful to have a silver medal, but this was far from my best ride. But this isn’t the end and I’m going to harness my energies, refocus and get back on the top of my game.” On Sunday, Chernove returned to the podium, capturing a bronze medal in the C1-2-3 1,000-metre time trial. Chernove hit the track with a time of 1:09.583, again just three seconds behind the gold medal winner, Li Zhangyu of China. While Chernove is happy to hit the podium, he says he isn’t riding to performance level and feels there’s more to give. See MEDALS Page 4
Further reflections on labour deal C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
As reported in the Bulletin last Friday, the City of Kimberley and Steelworkers Local 1-405 have reached an agreement and a fouryear collective agreement was ratified last week by members. Mayor Don McCormick says it was a good deal and both sides should be happy.

“With respect to the final terms, there is reason for both sides to feel good,” he said. The final deal includes the special vacation benefit being grandfathered for all current employees but will not be offered to new employees. There will be a six per cent wage increase over the four year term and some improvement to benefits. One of the more contentious
points was the Job Evaluation System, which will be eliminated. “The new agreement is to put a committee together, with representation from both city and union, and come up with a new approach to evaluating jobs,” McCormick said. The main feeling, now that everything is settled, is relief, the Mayor says. See DEAL, page 3

back to the Aboriginal community and raise awareness for the families and victims of the Highway of Tears murders. “I am doing this because I am facing significant health issues,” Merchant wrote on his fundraising website. “I have SLE lupus, early onset dementia and diabetes and am very aware that I have a limited time in which I will be physically able to make a difference in the world.” The Ktunaxa Nation is challenging our fellow Nations and partner organizations and governments to donate to Brett’s cause. You can personally donate to Brett’s gofundme page at www.gofundme.com/ highwayoftears. You can find more information on Brett’s journey on his Facebook page at www.facebook. com/walkforhighwayoftears A series of murders and disappearances of aboriginal women along the 720 km section of Highway 16 between
Prince George and Prince Rupert, from 1969 until 2011, is what has given the stretch of highway its name. According to Wikipedia, police list the number of Highway 16 victims at 19, but estimates by aboriginal organizations range into the 40s, largely because they include women who disappeared a greater distance from the highway. A lack of public transportation for the many aboriginal communities along the road means residents often to turn to hitchhiking as a form of transit. To date, only one murder has been solved, for which serial killer Cody Legebokoff was convicted, although American serial rapist and suspected serial killer Bobby Jack Fowler, who died while imprisoned in the United States for other crimes, is a suspect in many of the murders. Authorities have persons of interest in several other cases, but insufficient evidence to press charges.
Brett Merchant is making a 1,200-kilometre trek on foot with his dog Kura to give back to the Aboriginal community and raise awareness for the families and victims of the Highway of Tears murders.

Kootenay Savings contract remains unsettled C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Things are getting back to normal — labour-wise — in Kimberley, as the City and Steelworkers ratified their collective agreement last week, avoiding a work stoppage. The Steelworkers also announced late last week that the Nelson and District Credit Union and its unionized staff had settled on a new four-year collective agreement and it was ratified at the end of the week. However, there is still one set of negotia-
tions ongoing and that is between Kootenay Savings Credit Union and its unionized employees, represented by the Steelworkers as well. Steelworker lead negotiator Jeff Bromley said that the Nelson deal worked for both parties and showed what can happen when both parties work as partners rather than adversaries. He added that this left only Kootenay Savings to settle but that in that case his members still faced concessionary bargaining. The
parties were scheduled to meet Monday in Kimberley and Tuesday in Trail, Bromley said. “We’re currently evaluating the next steps/options but we also have some possible dates back with a provincial mediator in a couple of weeks. At this point things are stalled, but I hope to have more information soon.” Credit Union members ratified a strike vote last June but there has been little progress over the summer.
Deal a good one, Mayor McCormick says From Page 1 “It is a relief. I think first and foremost for the workers. They hung in there on their jobs through a lot of uncertainty this summer.” McCormick also says it will be a relief for those who use city facilities. “Take the Dynamiters for example. They did have contingency plans but
they were very worried about their ability to begin their season. Council is very pleased a settlement was reached and those concerns can be put to rest.” McCormick said the fact that Council remained in unanimous support of the negotiating team throughout was key.

Gearing up for another Scouting year
Opportunity for fun and adventure in our beautiful backyard TONY HARRIS For the Bulletin
Kimberley Scouters are excited to be planning another season of exploring our beautiful part of the world for our Scout Troop here in Kimberley. As a boy growing up in England I grew up with Cubs and Scouts but although I loved it and had lots of fun I really didn’t have the opportunities available to the youth living here in Kimberley. We are truly blessed and now as an adult in the Canadian Scouting movement I fully appreciate what we have on offer right here on our doorstep! This surely is our best resource… Last year we explored lots of places that locals asked “where did you say you went…”, and “you
got there by sled?” My response is always with a huge smile, as I keenly retell our tales; the funny bits, the hard bits, who did what, who said this or that…well you know how those great trips go…. You do, don’t you? I really hope so! My son, now 17 yrs old, has seen so much adventure already with scouts and he continues to explore with his buddies now that he is self-sufficient, confident and competent. It is a joy to see. We have a small band of volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make things happen…well you know how that happens everywhere in this small town we call home and our community, hey? We get ‘er done! Despite the volunteer hours, every single minute is worth it when you see these youth develop into confident young adults happy in their own capabilities in all environments. We have some other great resources
TONY HARRIS PHOTOS
Kimberley Scouts have epic adventures in the great East Kootenay outdoors. too. We have a trailer loaded with canoes and all of the gear to go with it, a High Ropes Course at Camp Stone to swing around on, lots of XCountry skis, boots & poles to get into places to explore during winter. We have modern lightweight backpacking tents, stoves, oh and
don’t let me forget, a couple of sleds to help us get backcountry access… see pretty modern and up to date hey…haha, not like in my day!! Since 2008 (when I joined as a Scouter) we have had too many epic camping trips to list but we did make a few You Tube slideshows if any-
one wants to search Kimberley Scout Troop on YouTube and check them out. Suffice to say we have biked, hiked, skied, ski-jored, canoed & sled into our nighttime camp locations or a combination of a few of these. Scouts is coed for youth aged 11 – 14yrs
old. The new Canadian Path Program is Youth Led so the adults are almost redundant lol….I wish..but we do our best to let youth lead the way and plan & execute their own program. It’s challenging but very very rewarding. We will be hosting a Registration Evening at Camp Stone
(First left after the Camp Ground on the St Mary’s Lake Rd) on Sep 15th from 6pm – 8pm if anyone would like to find out more about us. There will be Beavers (5-7yrs) and Cubs (8-10yrs) also for younger brothers and sisters. Come check us out!

Korean Rhetoric and Reality Japanese government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said that North Korea was the “neighbourhod outlaw” after Pyongyang’s fifth nuclear weapons test on Friday. Barack Obama said that “The United States does not, and never will, accept North Korea as a nuclear state.” Even China voiced its “firm opposition to the test.” And South Korea’s president, Park Gyeung-hye, accused North Korea’s Dear Leader Kim Jong-un of “maniacal recklessness”. So far, so restrained – in stark contrast to the berserk threats and fulminations that are the usual fare in North Korea. (Promising to obliterate Seoul, the South Korean capital, in a “sea of fire” is a familiar favourite.) But then a military spokesman of the South Korean government promised that Pyongyang “will be completely destroyed by ballistic missiles and high-explosive shells” if North Korea even thinks of launching a nuclear attack on the South. The city will be “reduced to ashes and removed from the map,” said the official – and districts of Pyongyang thought to be hiding the North’s leadership will be particularly targeted in the attack. So much for restraint. Sixty-six years of intense hostility have bred an extreme brand of rhetoric on both sides of the border that sounds quite demented to the ears of outsiders. Germany was divided for 44 years, and hundreds were killed on the heavily fortified border between them, but you never heard this kind of invective coming out of the mouths of East or West German officials. Maybe it’s just a stylistic thing, but it does suggest that the possibility of a real war between the two Koreas is higher
than it ever was between the two Germanies. But why does North Korea need nuclear weapons to carry out its threats? It’s perfectly capable of destroying Seoul with “ballistic missiles and high-explosive shells” too. The centre of Seoul, a city of 11 million people, is only 50 km from the North Korean border. Ordinary artillery could take out the northern half of the city, while short-range missiles dealt with the southern half. (North Korea has 21,000 artillery pieces and Gwynne thousands of Scud missiles.) Pyongyang’s nuclear Dyer weapons must be for something else. North Korea’s strategic problem is that it has no allies, while South Korea is allied to the world’s leading nuclear power, the United States – which has never promised not to use its nuclear weapons first. Pyongyang needs some means of deterring the use of American nuclear weapons in the Korean peninsula if there is a war. This does not justify what North Korea is doing – United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon denounced the latest nuclear test as a “brazen breach” of UN resolutions – but it does explain it. So Kim Jong-un, like his father and his grandfather before him, wants the ability to make nuclear attacks on America’s main Asian ally, Japan, for a start, and later on the United States itself. Regrettably, that’s how deterrence works. The North Korean regime is almost uniquely awful, but the strategic logic would be exactly the same if it were run by much nicer people. And although the regime is completely paranoid, it is not crazy. It has not started a war in the past six decades, and there is no reason to
think that it is planning one now. North Korea’s paranoia is also misplaced, because nobody in the South dreams of reunifying the peninsula by war either. In fact, most people in South Korea would not welcome reunification now even if it happened non-violently. I happened to be in Seoul interviewing somebody in the intelligence service headquarters on the day in 1996 when the death of North Korea’s founder, Kim Ilsung, was announced. The scene that followed reminded me of the old naval adage: “When in danger or in doubt, Run in circles, Scream and shout.” But the dominant emotion was certainly not joy. It was fear that the North Korean regime would collapse, and that newly prosperous South Korea, having dragged itself out of poverty by two generations of sacrifice, would inherit 25 million impoverished North Koreans with few skills relevant to a modern economy, and have to start all over again. Twenty years on, it’s almost certain that a majority of South Koreans still feel like that about it. So there really is little risk of war – which is just as well, because there is also little chance of diverting Pyongyang from its course. Another round of sanctions will not do the trick – on Sunday Pyongyang said that the threat of “meaningless sanctions” was “highly laughable” – because the country is almost completely cut off from the global economy already. Putting a Thaad anti-ballistic-missile unit in South Korea, as Washington has promised to do, will make the South Koreans and the Japanese feel a bit safer, but everybody is just going to have to live with the problem. They probably won’t die from it. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist based in London

Letters to the Editor Team Klostapukin
We are Team Klostapukin — a five-woman from Lethbridge and Calgary. This was the first time doing Kootenay Gran Fondo ride for us and it was a fantastic experience. Registration was well organized, lots of very friendly volunteers and terrific sponsors. Rails to Trails path was unique and scenic as well as safe. The meal after was delicious! Nice entertainment! We were presented the Team Spirit award and enjoyed the afternoon at The Heid Out. Thanks Heidi for the generous prize, amazing food and beer. Appreciate you taking the time to give us the tour and history behind your wonderful establishment! Thank you and see you next year; Team Klostapukin
Kimberley Aquatic Centre
I’ve heard a lot of negative talk about the Kimberley Aquatic Centre recently. Some think it costs too much and that it is under used. I’ve worked there since the doors opened 10 years ago and I’d like to give you a different perspective. Money and value are two very different things. The Aquatic Centre brings value to the City of Kimberley. It employs 20-plus people, there is a very active seniors group and a lot of families who use the pool. Many young families have told me that the pool was a big drawing card when they were choosing where to live, build their businesses and raise their families. Many seniors say that without the pool they would suffer from reduced mobility and increased pain. It keeps them active and socially happier. The value is that they make fewer trips to the doctor and generally feel healthier. People who have suffered an injury or have had surgery are using the pool for rehab. Their recovery time is shorter and they
return to their jobs and lives more quickly. Then we have the school kids. Every child in Kimberley’s school system has the opportunity to be in swimming lessons. There are programs in place so that kids can have lessons whether or not their family can afford it. They learn basic skills that could save their own life or someone else’s. Don’t let an empty parking lot fool you into thinking nothing is happening at the pool. There is most likely a school bus sitting nearby or the kids have walked down from school. A Swim Club parent said to me “Kids in sports stay out of courts.” We have some amazing, dedicated athletes in this group. They are winning all kinds of medals. Future Olympians? Wouldn’t that make Kimberley proud? They train here. We have a large community of business owners and organizations who also see value in the pool. They show this by sponsoring FREE Community Swims. By their generosity families can use the pool and don’t need to be concerned about the cost. All these people pay taxes and choose to live and spend their money here in Kimberley. There’s another group. People from all over the world have visited our pool. They consistently tell us that we have a real gem here. They too choose to spend their money and time here in Kimberley. The Aquatic Centre is often the face of Kimberley. When we give visitors friendly, quality service they want to come back. They leave Kimberley believing that it really is a ‘Good Place to Be.’ It is rare to find a pool anywhere that makes money. The referendum was a long time ago and the reality is, we have a pool here. It may cost in one respect but it brings revenue to Kimberley in other ways. It is a valuable asset. Why not promote it? Maybe with support it would get closer to running in the black. Don’t confuse the bottom line with true value. Tami Kaldestad Kimberley

T
he Justin Trudeau government has declared a pension crisis, and is imposing its solution. After the Ontario government threatened to press ahead with its own Quebec-style provincial pension plan, the Ottawa head office of the Liberal Party stepped in. Finance Minister Bill Morneau called a meeting of provincial ministers in June, and they lined up to support his intention to expand the Canada Pension Plan starting in 2019. Perhaps still haunted by the leap to the harmonized sales tax, B.C. Finance Minister Mike de Jong broke from the herd ever so slightly, declaring a consultation period first. Premier Christy Clark hinted that this was a formality, since she is focused on cordial relations with Ottawa. B.C.’s rubber stamp could come any day. Morneau’s CPP expansion plan sounds quite modest. Employer and employee payroll contributions are to go up from the current 4.95 per cent of earnings to 5.95 per cent by 2023. For each employee earning $54,900, the employer contribution goes up $7 to $8 per month in each of the first five

Liberal Party of Canada
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne campaigns with soon-to-be federal finance minister Bill Morneau in Toronto last fall. years of the phase-in. The goal is that by 2025, CPP will cover a third of earnings rather than a quarter as it does today. Morneau is concerned about the decline in private pension plans, and sees it as the state’s job to step in. The days of bond investments earning seven per cent interest are gone, and even public sector employers are starting to look at defined-contribution pension plans where the payout depends on investment returns. (See the horrified response of the post office union to the idea that a guaranteed pension isn’t their God-given right.) For private sector employees, defined-benefit pensions are mostly a distant memory, if they have an employer pension at all. Many join self-employed
people who are expected to manage their own RRSPs and tax-free savings accounts, which were curtailed by the incoming Trudeau government. The Liberal philosophy is to discourage individual responsibility and increase state control. De Jong gave an upbeat assessment of B.C.’s public sector pensions in his recent report on the public accounts. Unlike basket-case provinces such as Quebec (50 per cent unfunded liability) and Alberta (76 per cent unfunded), B.C. is 97 per cent funded. The B.C. teachers’ pension plan has an unfunded liability of $244 million, which is projected to be covered by 2019 through increased employee and employer contributions. Of course the employers are
school districts, funded by taxpayers. B.C.’s municipal pension plan also has an unfunded liability. So if you are a self-employed person trying to sock away retirement funds on your own, you can be comforted by the fact that you’ll be chipping in a bit extra for teachers and municipal employees to maintain their guaranteed pensions. And if you’re a small business owner, you’re looking at an extra $40 a month for each employee for CPP. According to a survey released last week by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, some employers will have to forgo other benefits. Some expect to freeze or even cut wages. Some expect layoffs. The CFIB survey found low public awareness of all of this. Polling company Ipsos found almost 40 per cent of Canadians think the government pays for part of CPP. More than 70 per cent are unaware that current retirees get nothing from the CPP expansion. The Fraser Institute ran the numbers on CPP deductions compared to Morneau’s middle class tax cut. When the CPP expansion is done, that $54,900-a-year employee will see a net decrease of $374 in take-home pay. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

Young Ice roster gets preseason action TREVOR CRAWLEY
Despite three losses in Kennewick, Luke Pierce likes what he’s seeing from his team. The Kootenay Ice took part in the annual tournament hosted by the TriCity Americans, posting three losses, however, two of those games ended in overtime and a shootout. “I think overall, there was a lot of positive things,” said Pierce. “Especially with the first two games, the first one coming off a long travel and Prince George had a veteran lineup in and we had a very young lineup, I thought our guys, they didn’t get down, competed hard and found some ways to score goals, which is nice. “…Overall, our speed was maybe better than I anticipated, our team play obviously still has some work to do.” Once the team returned to Cranbrook, prized prospects F Peyton Krebs, the first overall selection in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft and second rounder G Jesse Makaj, were reassigned. Krebs will play for CFR Chemicals Bisons in the Alberta Midget Hockey League, while Makaj will head to the Northwest Giants of the B.C. Major Midget League. The team roster now stands at three goaltenders, 10 defencemen and 18 forwards as they head into the Crowsnest Pass tournament against Lethbridge and Calgary, starting with a
Thursday night matchup against the Hurricanes. With that many bodies in the lineup, Pierce will be throwing some players who are used to playing centre on to the wing to get looks at how they adapt. Also, he’s hoping that with 31 players left on the preseason roster, it forces some tough decisions on management. “For the guys, you’re looking for people to separate themselves,” Pierce said. “There’s some real close competition and some guys need to elevate their games and the Crowsnest is an interesting place to evaluate it. “It’s a smaller rink and a little more chaotic, so we’re going to have to see the battle-strength in guys and if they’re ready to play right now. “We got a lot of young players on our roster. Are we ready to be that young or do we have to go with some older bodies?” Weekend recap PG 5 , KOO, 4 (OT) On Thursday, the Ice kicked off the tournament by forcing overtime against the Prince George Cougars, however, Jensen Harkins sealed up the 5-4 win for the Cats less than a minute into the extra frame. Prince George built an early threegoal lead in the first period off of goals from Josh Anderson—a power play
marker—while Aaron Boyd and Jared Bethune also chipped in offence. Early in the second frame, the Ice responded with some help from the veterans as Matt Alfaro and Jared Legien put Kootenay on the board, while newcomer Fedor Rudakov also found the back of the net in the third period. A goal from Harkins late in the game looked like it was enough to lift the Cougars to the win, however, Legien tallied with just over 30 seconds left in the affair to knot it up and send it to overtime. Kootenay goaltending duties were evenly split at 30 minutes apiece between Payton Lee and Jakob Walter; Lee with 16 stops in 19 shots, while Walter made 22 saves on 24 pucks directed on goal. Prince George also split their goaltending duties between Ty Edmonds and Tavin Grant, with Kootenay putting a collective 27 shots on goal. The Ice were shut out on four opportunities with the power play and gave up one goal while killing three penalties. SEA 4, KOO, 3 (SO)

POR , 6 KOO, 2 Three straight goals in the third period helped the Portland Winterhawks to a 6-2 win over the Ice on the final day of the tournament on Saturday. The two teams were tied after the first period; goals came from Alex Overhardt for Portland, while Zak Zborosky replied for the Ice. Overhardt added a second goal in the middle frame, while Ryan Hughes also padded the Winterhawks’ lead. Krebs put a dent into the Portland lead with another shorthanded effort early in the third, however, Portland scored three straight goals from Evan Weinger, Lane Gilliss and Matthew Quigley to seal up the win. Jakob Walter and Declan Hobbs split goaltending duties; Walter with14 saves, while Hobbs made 15 stops in goal. The Ice forwarded 23 shots on the Portland goal, which was manned by Michael Bullion and Cole Kehler. “At times we played some of our best hockey of the week, and at others, again, just some small mistakes that they capitalized on,” said Pierce.

Nick Holowko was the shootout hero for the Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday, being the lone shooter to beat Makaj, while all three Kootenay players weren’t able to put a puck past Carl Stankowski. Tyson Terretta gave the Tbirds an early lead in the first frame, however, the Ice responded with goals from Dylan Stewart in the middle frame, and Vince Loschiavo in the third. Nolan Volcan knotted up the game near the halfway mark for Seattle, but Krebs notched a shorthanded effort to put the Ice in the lead. A late goal with 20 seconds left in the game from Matthew Wedman evened up the score between the two teams before heading into overtime, and eventually, the shootout. Declan Hobbs and Makaj split goaltending duties; Hobbs with 11 saves and Makaj with 12. Kootenay responded with 20 shots on goal against goaltenders Ryan Gilchrist and Stankowski. “It was a game we probably should’ve won,” said Pierce. “We just made some bad mistakes late in the game.”
If there was one bright spot for the Kootenay Ice at the conclusion of a 12-win 2015-16 Western Hockey League campaign, it was the prospect of selecting first overall at the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft in Calgary. While there was plenty of debate leading up to the draft, Garnet Kazuik, director of scouting for the Ice, opted to call the name of Peyton Krebs, the 5-foot-11, 162-pound dynamo from Okotoks, Alta. From there, we fast forward as the 15-year-old Krebs just completed his first WHL training camp with the Ice, eager for a taste of what it will take to make the jump to the WHL when he becomes eligible next season. “I’ve been waiting all summer for this opportunity to come out and play with Kootenay,” Krebs said during the late stages of training camp last week. “Obviously I can’t make the team this year, but meeting some of the new faces here and getting my bearings [has been good]. “The speed has been a little bit different from bantam. It was good being able to practIce and play with some of the guys this summer. It helped me out and they made me feel more comfortable out here.” After registering an astounding 46 goals and 102 points through 27 games with the Rocky Moun-
tain Raiders of the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League (AMBHL) in 2015-16, Krebs’ talent is unquestionable and to put a point of emphasis on his established track record, he showed up to Kootenay Ice training camp and immediately set to blowing the minds of those watching him. “Peyton, it goes without saying, he’s a superb talent,” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Ice, at the conclusion of training camp. “Not just that, he’s an extremely dedicated and hard worker. I think he wants to win everything that he does, whether that’s the shift that he’s on or the game that he’s in. Fitness testing – he blew out of the water and that’s a testament. That’s not just raw talent, that’s work ethic and determination. “When he is a part of our organization, that’s going to spread and it will impact so many other players. What you need to become a championship team is to have that catalyst and I think he brings that.” Veteran forward Matt Alfaro, a native of Calgary, had the opportunity to skate and train with Krebs in the Calgary area this past summer, so he wasn’t all that surprised to see the youngster come into Kootenay Ice training camp and dazzle during rookie sessions before leaving jaws on the floor with some stunning execution during mixed scrimmages and intrasquad action.
“He’s a good player, there’s a reason why he went first overall,” Alfaro said. “He’s mature on the Ice. He’s quick. He makes good decisions for how young he is. I know when I was that age I wouldn’t be able to make some of the plays he makes. It’s good to have him.” Unfortunately for the 20-yearold Alfaro, he will have to settle for 2016 pre-season play alongside Krebs as he won’t be around to welcome the future star when he arrives on a full-time basis in 2017-18. In the meantime, Krebs continues to work at his craft, not content with simply riding the wave of momentum since being drafted first overall in May. “You want to work hard and show what you can do. Don’t give up – that’s the biggest thing. I want to play here when I’m 16.” The 2015-16 campaign saw the creative forward earn honours as the AMBHL South Division’s Most Valuable Player and Outstanding Forward. For the 2016-17 season, Krebs will suit up with the Midget AAA CFR Bisons based out of Strathmore, Alta., where he already has his sights set on chasing a championship title. Kootenay closes its pre-season slate with a pair of games in Crowsnest Pass, Alta., going headto-head with the Lethbridge Hurrricanes (Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. MDT) and Calgary Hitmen (Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. MDT).

At the Cranbrook Public Library Mike Selby
In ‘On Bowie’, Rob Sheffield explains how David Bowie “created art that not only pushed boundaries, but helped fans understand themselves and view the world from fantastic new perspectives.” Blue Balliett tells an intriguing story about a group of elementary school kids solving a gallery’s problem with art theft in ‘Pieces & Puzzles.’ Storytime is back! Preschool Story Time is this Wednesday at 11 am, 1:15 pm, & 6:30 pm, and Toddler Story Time is 10 and 11 am. Both will be all about Friends! New this fall is Baby Laptime on Fridays at 1 pm. It will be starting on Friday, Sept 23. This program is for babies who are not yet walking so a specific age is not really set—best approximation is under 1 year of age. Since we do not have daycare for older siblings we ask that parents who have babies and children who are walking come to the toddler storytime instead of the baby laptime. Preparations are underway by the Friends of the Cranbrook Public Library and the Sunrise Rotary Club for the Fall Book Sale. This event will be held at the Ktunaxa Nation Gym from Wednesday, Sept. 28 to Sunday, Oct. 2. There is still time to bring in your donation for this sale. Items must be in good condition. Please bring books, Dvds, Cds, videos and books on tape to the front circulation desk in the Library. At this time, we can’t accept encyclopedias or National Geographic magazines. However, we especially appreciate pocket books. Artistic Connections for Teens tales place on Saturday, Sept. 14, 3:30 –6 p.m. in the Manual Training Room. Explore your creative side with local artist Taryn King as she instructs participants how to make fantastic 3-D geometric art. Snacks and materials will be provided. Cost is free. FREE one-on-one tech training session for those of you who want to enhance your current computing skills. We cover many topics including Basic Tablet usage, Basic Computer usage, Windows 10 training, Window 8 + 8.1 training, Window 7 training, Microsoft Suit training, Library E book training, and much more. To register, please contact the Library at (250) 426-4063, or sign up at the front desk. Our website is up and running at www.cranbrookpubliclibrary.ca. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Interference in achieving a goal could trigger your temper. You might want to detach and figure out why you feel so angry. You probably are not the only one wondering! Make peace as fast as possible. Do your best to move on with your day. Tonight: Hang out with a close friend. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Pressure seems to be coming from several different directions. Your juggling skills will become apparent. A loved one could be hot-tempered. You might want to find out why. Tap into your ingenuity. Tonight: Ask for a much-deserved massage, or soak in a hot bubble bath. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You’ll move quickly, as you sense that those in your work environment are on the warpath. Recognizing that you don’t want to deal with others’ anger will allow you to detach. Know that you might need to deal with a loved one’s outburst. Tonight: Choose a favorite movie.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) A trusted partner might not come through for you as you originally had anticipated. A child could be in the center of this situation. Knowing when to pull back and allow other people to deal with this issue will be critical. Tonight: Let someone else be responsible for dinner! LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Don’t worry about someone else’s seriousness, as this person might be going through a phase. Tempers flare when you least expect it, which could make you wonder what is going on. Keep your distance, and you will be much happier. Tonight: Go along with a suggestion. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Listen to your inner vice when dealing with someone difficult. You’ll move through a problem quickly as long as you can remain flexible. Don’t make a big deal out of this issue unless you want to see an ongoing saga. Tonight: Choose a favorite form of relaxation. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You could be full of fun and energy, but the same cannot be

said for those around you. Tempers flare, and others seem to yell for no reason. Stay mellow. You might want to listen, but stay out of the drama. Smile and say little. Tonight: Don’t stand on ceremony with a loved one. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You might feel as if you are on top of a personal matter, at least until a family member lets you know otherwise. Make wise financial choices, even if you’re looking at an essential expenditure. If you can postpone your decision for a while, do. Tonight: Accept a loving gesture. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You could be getting ahead of yourself in a situation involving another party. You mean well, and hopefully this person will realize that as well. Be open to conversations, and try not to get too uptight. A lot could change within a month. Tonight: Hang out at a favorite haunt. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You will be in a position where you might want to understand what is really going on with someone. Try to put yourself in this person’s shoes. As a result,
you might gain a whole new perspective. Understanding could prevent a problem. Tonight: Make it your treat! AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You are full of energy, and seem content to continue on the same path. You might find a friend to be overly serious, contentious and somewhat confused. Don’t judge this person too harshly; he or she might not intentionally be out of sorts. Tonight: Whatever pleases you. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You could be wondering how to handle a boss’s demands. A temper tantrum could erupt from out of the blue. You might need to be willing to put in extra time. Allow your sense of humor to come out; it will help you gain a new perspective. Tonight: A must appearance. BORN TODAY Philanthropist Milton S. Hershey (1857), physician Walter Reed (1851), singer Charles Brown (1922)

Dear Annie by Annie Lane
adapting to anger Dear Annie: I’m 18, and recently I’ve been having problems with my dad. I tried to be a mature person while growing up. I never had a particularly rebellious stage. But my dad’s temper isn’t always controllable. When I was young and things didn’t go his way, he would yell and throw things. Luckily, as I grew, his temper quelled a bit, but still when I don’t quite agree with his opinions -- even if it’s just a small thing -- he gets very emotional and angry. That scares me, and I just become resigned. I don’t want to argue and see no point in doing so. I’d rather agree and live as a happy family. But this has had its costs, and I’ve grown further and further apart from my family emotionally. They don’t really know much about me, my ideas, my values or my personality, and I’m worried that I’m becoming biased when viewing them. I’ll be leaving my country and going to college soon, and I just want to change something for the better before it’s too late. -- Venturing Out Dear Venturing: When you’re a kid, you don’t have much control over your living situation, so you adapt to it. You’ve learned how to get by and cope in your household over the years. Healthy detachment has been a useful device in your emotional toolkit, as it has prevented you from absorbing all the stress of your environment. Once you leave home, you might find it easier to let that protective wall down and be candid with your family. Before you go, try writing a letter to each of your family members to express your love and your hopes to have closer relationships with them. (A letter would be especially useful for communicating to your father, seeing as he can’t interrupt the written word.) It may not immediately erase the emotional distance, but it will offer you a sense of peace. You might also talk with the rest of your family about encouraging Dad to seek help in managing his anger. I wish you all the best. Dear Annie: I’m curious: What are the basic rules today for throwing baby showers? It has been a rule that bridal showers are given by friends of the bride, not by her relatives. Nowhere is it clear who gives the baby shower. Recently, I attended my very close relative’s elaborate, well-themed first baby shower. The mother-to-be has written her notes of gratitude (thank goodness). But I have a problem. I requested many gift suggestions and bought many of them, and because I planned to be out of town when the baby arrived, I also gave a generous monetary gift. Handing it to the showered expectant mother, I clearly asked that the large amount of money be put in an educational fund to be started for the baby. In the thank-you note, she stated that the money was used for the shower. Since when is it proper for the mother to be cajoled into paying for her own shower? I know it is a fast-paced, ever-changing world we adults are caught up in. But can you explain this to me? -- Perplexed Relative Dear Perplexed: Although it used to be considered poor form for anyone in a bride- or mother-to-be’s family to throw a shower (the reason being it might give the appearance of asking for money for your own family), it’s now socially acceptable and common. Now, one would hope a bride-to-be or expectant mother wouldn’t have to go to the trouble of throwing the shower herself, but it’s not totally unheard of or rude to do so. As for her spending the money you gave her on the shower rather than putting it in an educational fund -- well, I’m afraid it’s tough cream puffs on that front. Next time, if you want to make certain a financial gift goes toward the baby’s education, look into opening a 529 college savings account (which you could invite other guests to contribute to, too). Your financial planner can provide you with more information. Send your questions for Annie Lane to dearannie@creators.com. Tim Hortons launches Smile Cookie Campaign with proceeds for MRI Submitted
Monday, Sept. 12, marked the launch of the Tim Hortons annual Smile Cookie Campaign to support healthcare throughout the East Kootenay. From September 12-18 when you purchase a $1 Smile Cookie either Cranbrook locations, Tim Hortons donates $1 towards a new permanent MRI at East Kootenay Regional Hospital. Over the past nine years Tim Hortons has raised over $110,000 towards improving our local healthcare. Matt Gareau, Owner of Tim Hortons, “It is great to see what our team at Tim Hortons and amazing customers can do
in ten years to improve healthcare for the East Kootenay. We are thrilled mark this milestone year with proceeds going to the permanent MRI at East Kootenay Regional Hospital. This is a much needed piece of equipment that will help not only my staff and customers, but their families and neighbours. We look forward to a great Smile Cookie Campaign this year and encourage everyone to come down and purchase a Smile Cookie for the MRI.” Currently the East Kootenay region has access to the Mobile MRI unit for one week per month, sharing this unit with
The Canadian Cancer Society is calling on Premier Christy Clark and BC Health Minister Terry Lake to expand the province’s human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program to include all genders in order to prevent cancer. Currently in BC, the HPV vaccine is publicly funded and available in school for all girls in grade 6 across the province. Boys, however, do not have equal access to the vaccine and are only offered it if they are considered at an ‘increased risk’ of contracting HPV. “The HPV vaccine is a proven and effective way to prevent many different types of cancer, and yet here in BC we are leaving a significant number of our boys and young men vulnerable to disease,” says Jenny Byford, Advocacy Lead, Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon. “We believe everyone should have equal and affordable access to the HPV vac-
cine to prevent cancer, regardless of gender, sexual orientation or social status.” In BC, boys and young men between the ages of nine and 26 who are considered eligible for the free vaccine include those who may have sex with men, are questioning their sexual orientation, are ‘street involved,’ infected with HIV, in the care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development or are in youth custody services. Boys and young men who do not fall within this ‘increased risk’ group must cover the cost themselves. With vaccine costs ranging from $300-$450, this is a significant barrier to uptake. Men are two to four times more likely to be diagnosed with an HPV oral cancer than women. Under the current policy in BC, men are reliant on women for protection from the virus. This is especially concerning considering BC’s varying vaccination rates

among women across the province. According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, the average HPV vaccination rate among grade 6 girls across BC has remained below 70 per cent since the program was introduced, with some areas falling below 60 per cent. The National Advisory Committee of Immunization recommends the HPV vaccine for girls and boys in order to prevent HPV infections and associated cancers. HPV is associated with anal, penile, cervical, vagina, vulvar, mouth and throat cancers as well as anogenital warts. The Canadian Cancer Society, along with 25 other health organizations, submitted a letter to BC Health Minister Terry Lake in early June requesting an expansion of BC’s vaccination program to include all genders. The full letter and information about the HPV vaccine is available at cancer.ca/bc/HPVvaccine.

Trail and Penticton. The limited access to the Mobile unit has meant long wait times and in many instances patient travel outside the region to access MRI services in Kelowna or Calgary. “The addition of the MRI at East Kootenay Regional Hospital will make it a truly regional hospital, and we are thrilled to have Tim Horton’s continued support to help our hospital complete the vision set out years ago,” said Cassandra Schwarz, EKFH Executive Director.
