Resident campaigns against $10 million plan Wendell Dalke concerned about potential tax hike with potential AAP loan TRE VOR CR AWLEY
A Cranbrook resident is spearheading a campaign against the city’s plan to potentially borrow $10 million for road and infrastructure upgrades. Wendell Dalke, along with other concerned citizens, are taking the city to task over the proposed plan, which will mean increases to residential and business taxes. “We’re fixing roads right now and that’s good, but this plan to borrow $10 million will be an unnecessary tax burden,” said Dalke. “I’m all for fixing roads, but lets do that by searching for government funding and grants instead through a tax increase.” According to a pamphlet that Dalke and the group have put together, the loan will take 20 years to pay off, while tax hits will be $31 per $100,000 in residential assessed value and $56 per $100,000 of assessed value for business owners. The group says that there is a projected TREVOR CRAWLEY PHOTO general property tax increase of 2.26 per The College of the Rockies hosted a delegation representing a vocational training centre in Tanzania last week. Strings, keys, valves, and mallets YME WOENSDREGT
Quick! What has 108 strings, 125 keys, 30 valves, several mallets, and a single baton? If you guessed the Symphony of the Kootenays, you’d be right. The Symphony, under Jeff Farragher’s direction, has lined up another season of exciting concerts and superb music– making for people of all ages and tastes. The music spans the 16th to the 21st century, and features our own symphony musicians as well as guest soloists. The season opens on October 16 with a fanfare written by Edmonton’s Allan Gilliland. Throughout the season, the orchestra will be playing Antonio Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”, beginning with Autumn. Amy Zanrosso is the soloist in Beethoven’s 4th Piano Concerto, and the concert comes to a close with the wonderfully melodic “Scheherazade” by Nikolai Rimsky–Korsakov. Our Christmas show falls on the weekend of

December 3–4, and opens with Vivaldi’s “Winter”. Our guest singer, the multi–talented Allison Girvan from Nelson, will sing songs of the season. The joy continues with a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the television show, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. Come and listen … and even sing along! The third concert takes place on February 11. It opens with Vivaldi’s “Spring”, a harbinger of warmer weather. That’s followed by some of your favourite music from the movies. Some of the music is classical music and taken over by the movies—who can forget the thrilling “Ride of the Valkyries” in Apocalypse Now? The rest of the music was written specifically for the movies, and features iconic themes from movies like James Bond, Mission Impossible and Jurassic Park. It will be sure to set your toes tapping. The season closes with a commemoration
of the 100th anniversary of the battle of Vimy Ridge, one of the most important battles of World War 1. It opens with the final segment of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, “Summer”. This concert features local singers in the Symphony Choir singing “Spirit of England” by Edward Elgar which mourns the terrible loss of war, and also the sublime “Requiem” by Gabriel Fauré. As Fauré himself wrote, the work “is dominated from beginning to end by a very human faith in eternal rest.” This final concert of the season features three soloists, including Cranbrook’s own William Grossman who returns as the tenor soloist in “Spirit of England”. It promises to be a remarkable season of music. Tickets are priced very reasonably. You can find more information on the website, http://sotk.ca/. You really don’t want to miss out.

Rotarians thank supporters for almost finished park washrooms BARRY COULTER
Rotarians and other dignitaries gathered on a rainy Saturday noon hour, Oct. 8, to hold a “thank you session” — the soft opening of the new washroom facilities in Rotary Park. Even though the new facilities won’t be open for business for another few weeks, Sandy Zeznik, President of the Cranbrook Rotary Club, said the day was a good opportunity to express appreciation, the occasion of the last outdoor Cranbrook Farmer’s Market of the year, and to recognize those who have been instrumental in
the structure of the new washrooms. Zeznik, serving as MC, thanked the City of Cranbrook for its support for the Rotary Club’s washroom project, in particular the Public Works Department; the many businesses who supported the project with gifts in kind, donations and letters of support; and the Rotarians and citizens participated in the “donate-a-brick” compaign. Acting Mayor Ron Popoff expressed appreciation to the Rotary Club and City of Cranbrook staff; Public Works Di-
rector Joe McGowan thanked the Rotary Club for the efforts in bringing the project forward thus far. Zeznik then introduced the “driver” of the project, David Kaiser of McDonald’s Restaurant in Cranbrook, the Rotary Club’s project director. Kaiser thanked the designers, the engineering donated by Russ Kinghorn and John Armstrong, the bricklaying done by Karl Schmitterer, and corporate suppliers EcoEletcric, Affordable Flooring and M&K Plumbing and Heating. Corporate donations came
in at $36,000, Kaiser said. Rotarians Russ Kinghorn and Paul Heywood then displayed a massive sign with the names of supporters, to be installed on the facility’s walls once the project is complete. The Rotary Club’s Donatea-brick program will run through the rest of the year to help bring the project to completion. People can “buy” a brick at $250 a brick, and the donation can be used for tax credit. For more information contact the Cranbrook Rotary Club, or go to the Rotary Club’s Facebook page.

College of the Rockies will be hosting a post-secondary fair on Wednesday, October 12 from 7 to 8:30 pm. Andra Louie, College of the Rockies Recruitment Officer, says, “For anyone looking at post-secondary options in BC, this is a great chance to learn not only about what institutions are available but also about starting at College of the Rockies before transferring elsewhere to complete a credential.” The Canadian Armed Forces will be on hand to provide information about their education options alongside post-secondary institutions including the University of British Columbia, Okanagan College, University of Northern British Columbia, Thompson Rivers University and the University of Victoria. “The College has dual admission and guaranteed admission agreements in place with UVIC,” Louie continues. “These agreements mean that Arts or Science students can complete the first two years of their university studies at College of the Rockies and then move directly into their guaranteed seat in the third year of selected programs at the University of Victoria. This is a terrific way for students to save money while still receiving the education they desire.” Louie and other College representatives will be on hand to provide information on certificate, diploma and degree programs offered at the College as well as transfer options, financial aid, student housing and more. The fair will take place in the front entrance of the Cranbrook main campus. Refreshments will be available. AAP loan will be a tax burden, says resident CONTINUED from page 1 Instead of taking a $10 million loan that will take 20 years to pay off, Dalke says there is a one per cent dedicated road tax that is available for road repair. It’s estimated that the dedicated tax will raise just under the $10 million of a planned $32.7 million in road projects by 2020. He also points to programs from the Union of British Columbia Municipalities and the federal government that are putting a priority focus on funding municipal infrastructure projects.
Dalke is urging anyone opposed to the city’s plan to borrow $10 million to fill out an elector response form and submit it to city hall. Forms can be filled out at city hall or online at www. cranbrook.ca In order for the loan to move forward, the city needs less than 10 per cent of electoral response forms against the plan. If more than 10 per cent of electoral response forms are against the plan, the loan will not move forward. The deadline is Oct. 31. If anyone is interested in getting involved with Dalke’s campaign, he can be reached at 250-489-3909.

Saudi Arabia admits defeat “G od be with the citizens, we are back to the time of poverty,” wrote Saudi Arabian blogger Rayan al-Shamri on Twitter last week. That’s a bit strong, but he and his fellow citizens are certainly no longer living in the time of plenty. Saudi Arabia is cutting back on all fronts. The wages of government employees accounted for almost half the the Saudi Arabian government’s spending last year: about $120 billion. And the country’s budget deficit, due to the collapse of the oil price, was $98 billion. So you can see why the government would go looking for some economies in the public sector. About two-thirds of employed Saudi citizens have public sector jobs, many of which require them to do little beyond showing up on a fairly regular basis. It’s the unwritten contract that the absolute monarchy made with its citizens decades ago, when money was not a problem: you keep quiet politically, and we will subsidise your lifestyle handsomely. But the money isn’t there any more. A royal decree on 23 September announced that government ministers’ salaries would be cut by 20 percent. Lower-ranking civil servants will have their pay frozen and their overtime payments and annual leave capped. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has announced a plan to cut the public sector to only 40 percent of the working population by 2020. (In the United States it’s 7 percent.) If this policy sounds a little less than drastic, that’s because the Saudi regime doesn’t dare cut harder for fear of a popular backlash. It cannot afford to let the
“time of poverty” come back, and citizens who are used to being coddled and subsidised will define anything short of their current living standard as “poverty”. So if the regime can’t get its budget spending down much, then it had better start getting the oil price back up before it runs out of money entirely and the roof falls in. This requires an about-turn in the market strategy it has followed for the past two years. The Organisation of Petroleum-Exporting Countries (OPEC) only accounts for 40 percent of the world’s Gwynne oil exports, which is marginal for a cartel that seeks Dyer to control the world oil price. Moreover, some poorer OPEC members regularly pump more oil than their quotas allow. So Saudi Arabia’s traditional role, as OPEC’s biggest member, was to cut production and get the world price back up when there was a glut of oil on the market. When the oil price collapsed two years ago, however, Saudi Arabia didn’t do that. The regime was worried that the rapid rise in American oil production, mainly due to fracking, would ultimately destroy OPEC’s ability to set the price of oil. Its response was to pump oil flat out and let the price stay low, hoping that this would drive the high-cost US fracking industry out of business. That was a foredoomed strategy, because the US government would even subsidise its fracking industry, if it had to, rather than give up on the dream of “energy independence” (self-sufficiency in oil production). In the event, that wasn’t necessary: even with the oil price at rock bottom, American oil production actually grew last year – and by now the OPEC producers are facing budgetary disaster.
At the OPEC summit in Algiers last Wednesday, Saudi Arabia publicly abandoned its strategy. OPEC will cut production by 700,000 barrels a day, starting next month. Saudi Arabia, as usual, will take the biggest share in the cuts – and if this round of cuts doesn’t get the price back up, there will presumably be a further round early in the new year. The Saudis have even agreed that Iran, their great strategic rival in the Gulf region, can increase its production while everybody else in OPEC is cutting. (Iran, frozen out of the market by the American embargo for so long, has been claiming its old OPEC quota back now that the embargo has been lifted, and until last week Saudi Arabia was resisting its demand.) A number of things are not yet clear about the new strategy. In particular, how to share the pain of production cuts between the OPEC members has not yet been worked out, so the market is not yet persuaded that these cuts are real. The world oil price jumped 7 percent on first news of the OPEC decision, but is now back down to about the level it was at before the OPEC announcement. OPEC’s promises about cuts have been broken before. But this time they probably will be kept, because a lot of the producers are truly desperate for a higher price. So, then, three conclusions. One, Saudi Arabia’s ability to set the price of oil, and OPEC’s power in general, is seriously impaired. Two, the oil price is going back up over the next year or so, though probably not beyond $70 or $80 a barrel. And three, that is really a good thing, because we need a higher oil price to drive the shift out of carbon fuels and into renewables. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist based in London

City Approval
So, the Mayor and Council have decided that fixing the roads (a campaign promise of some members) in a hurry is important. They have decided that it is so important that the Cranbrook residents should approve a $10 million loan, which also means approving a residential and business tax increase (not a campaign promise of any members). They have also decided that holding a referendum to obtain that approval is too expensive and time consuming. They are probably right. Instead of a referendum they have chosen the provincially mandated “alternative approval process”. What you should know, Cranbrook electors, is that this process is tilted in favor of approval. Here is how it works. If you wish to support the proposal to borrow $10 million and raise taxes, just do nothing. A non response is counted as approval. If you are not sure or don’t care and do nothing, you are also granting your approval. In either case, your approval is anonymous. On the other hand, to oppose the proposed loan and tax increase you must obtain an elector response form from the city’s website or in person at city hall. This requires time and effort, and is why the process is tilted in favor of approval. You are not done yet. You must complete the short response form and return it to city hall before 4:30 pm, October 31. This requires more time and effort, which means more tilt toward approval. You must also provide your name and signature - no anonymity here. If more than 10 per cent of electors return the elector response form, the city may not proceed. They may, however,
Community Calendar
decide to hold a referendum at a later date. If less than 10 per cent of electors return the response form, the city may proceed with the loan and tax increase – a green light. Bill Goss Cranbrook

My name is Pastor Ron Short. I am Senior Pastor of the Dwelling Place Church — 2324 2nd Avenue South. I also am Executive Director for Wings as Eagles Men’s Recovery Centre in Cranbrook. My wife Bonita (Bonnie) Short was brought into the hospital by ambulance on May 16, 2016, and discharged on October 5 to Residential Care. We want to personally thank all the staff in emergency, ICU and the Third Floor during Bonnie’s stay. Everyone has been very professional and considerate during her care. All through the events they kept me well informed of her care plan. On Wednesday, Oct. 5, when she was discharged it was a very emotional time for all of us, because the staff on the Third Floor have become like family. We love and appreciate everyone at E.K. Regional Hospital, and continue to cover everyone in prayer. We are most definitely and advocate for our hospital. God Bless… Pastor Ron Short Cranbrook
At the Cranbrook Public Library Tracey Borman reveals a behind the scenes look at the secrets and scandals attributed to Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, and Elizabeth I in her highly anticipated book ‘The Private Lives of the Tudors.’ Dustin Milligan’s ‘Bario Leblieux’ is a brightly illustrated look at the activist’s work on ensuring Canadian children had a constitutional right to be taught in either English or French. Storytime is back! Preschool Story Time is this Wednesday at 11:00 am, 1:15 pm, & 6:30 pm, and Toddler Story Time is 10:00 and 11:00 am. Both will be all about Clothes! New this fall is Baby Laptime on Fridays at 1 pm. This program is for babies who are not yet walking so a specific age is not really set—best approximation is under 1 year of age. Since we do not have daycare for older siblings we ask that parents who have babies and children who are walking come to the toddler storytime instead of the baby laptime. FREE one-on-one tech

YOUR CITY WORKING FOR YOU! Tuesday, October 11th, 2016 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK OCTOBER 9 – 15, 2016
WATCH THE IDLEWILD DAM REHAB CONSTRUCTION IN REAL TIME Work on the rehabilitation of Idlewild dam and the lake continues at a great pace. Check in on the activities anytime from your desktop or smartphone via our project webcam at http://playfullscreen.com/ cranbrook_1.php.
This year’s campaign, Don’t Wait - Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years,” stresses the critical importance of knowing how old your smoke alarms are and replacing them once they’re 10 years old.
Please remember this is an active construction area. If you decide to visit Idlewild in person, please obey all barricades and signage for your own safety.
To find out how old your smoke alarm is and its expiration date, simply look on the back of the alarm where the date of manufacture is marked. The smoke alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date (not the date of purchase). Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services also says smoke alarms should be tested monthly, and that batteries should be replaced once a year or when they begin to chirp, signaling that they’re running low.
PROVINCE-WIDE GUN AMNESTY PROGRAM RUNS UNTIL OCTOBER 31ST
For more information on smoke alarms and this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Don’t Wait: Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years”, visit www.firepreventionweek.org.

Cranbrook RCMP reminds interested firearms owners to call their local detachment or their department’s non-emergency line to arrange for officers to attend and retrieve the weapons. Under no circumstances should anyone deliver them to police. Please contact the Cranbrook Detachment at 250-489-3471.
The Cranbrook Aquatic Centre is hosting another community sponsored family swim on Saturday October 15, 2016 from 12pm to 1pm. ART! Art is your opportunity to define the mood in a room and most importantly make you feel: Feel inspired, calm, motivated or happy. Where do you start on choosing a piece of art? Space. How much do you have is your limit. Can you do one large piece, a couple of smaller ones? Color. Existing pieces in the room are going to dictate your color pallet. Inspiration. Now you can choose what inspires you within your limitations of space and color (and budget!). Then comes the business of hanging art...done wrong and it will make you uncomfortable. So how to do it right? nIf the piece is going above a piece of furniture than position it to be about 6- 12 inches above. Hang art so the center of the piece is eye level. It’s always helpful to have a buddy to do this task as less holes in the wall the better! Submitted by Bedroom Furniture Galleries 250-426-2316 • bedroomfurnituregalleries.ca
ON-DEMAND HOT WATER SYSTEMS VS HARD WATER?
Simply put, on-demand hot water systems are made for soft water. Most manufactures will state this in the warranty conditions of your system. In fact most water in the Kootenays will void a heaters warranty without pre-treatment. The Water Guy has small hot water only to wholehouse softening systems that will save you from an expensive repair bill not covered by your warranty. Let’s talk about water flow and the importance of keeping jets and diverters open. When jets and diverters are closed the water in the lines is not circulating or getting sanitized. It Happened This Week in Cranbrook For the week of October 9 - 15 DAVE HUMPHREY Items compiled from the archived newspapers held at the Cranbrook History Centre Archives
1904 Cranbrook’s pioneer druggist disposes of his store ... When it was first rumored around town that R. E. Beattie, Cranbrook’s pioneer druggist, had sold out the people were greatly surprised, and many were loath to believe that it was true. Yet it is a fact, and on Tuesday evening, after the task of invoicing the big stock was completed. Mr. Beattie turned over the keys to the new proprietor, J. G. Templeton, and walked out of the store that he had by his energy and business ability made known from one end of the Kootenays to the other. It will seem strange for a while not to find “Bert,” as he was so well known, behind the counters of the Post office Drug store. From the time that Cranbrook was composed of a few people and unlimited hope, Mr. Beattie has worked early and late in store. Mr. Templeton, the purchaser of the store, is a druggist of years of experience, and a few years ago had one of the largest drug stores in western Canada at Calgary. The climate on the prairie did not agree with him and he had to sell out. For some time he has had his eye on Cranbrook, and on Mr. Beattie’s store, and a week ago the two came to an agreement on the price and now Mr. Templeton owns the place. Mr. Templeton believes in Cranbrook and East Kootenay. He is of the opinion that this is going to be a great country, and although Mr. Beattie, in addition to his already large stock, had ordered more, Mr. Templeton has gone him several better and is sending in orders every day for new goods. He says that this Christmas he will have the big store filled from ceiling to cellar with the best goods that money can buy. Business is no waiting proposition with Mr. Templeton. He will go out after it. He has the capital and he Rocky Mountain

proposes to give the people of the district a marvelous stock to select from. The residents of Cranbrook will extend a cordial reception to Mr. Templeton and within a very short time he will feel that he is a pioneer.
R.E BEATTIE Large Families … In the two blocks south of the Methodist Church there are 17 families with 50 children under school age. N. C. McKinstry, who lives in one of the blocks, says that if the rest of the town could make as good a showing the population of Cranbrook would be much larger. Cheaters … A windfall came to the treasury yesterday from the police court fines. Four tin horns paid the aggregate sum of $120 for the carrying on of their profession during the past six weeks. John Rowell was the first case. He was charged in the usual form with “having no peaceable occupation and with living chiefly by the gains made from gaming.” In addition to this Chief Warring proved that the accused used marked cards. The cards were produced, as was also a letter from the manufacturers in Chicago found on the accused. The letter was written at the time the cards were forwarded and explained their combination by means of samples enclosed. The accused The Industry Leader in

pleaded guilty and his worship gave him the option of paying a fine of $50 and costs or six months imprisonment. The fine was paid. Three other tin horns answered respectively to similar charges. Their names were Harry Nash, Frank Carper and Harry Hudson. Chief Warring asked that, in view of the fact that he had no evidence that these men used marked cards, they might be dealt with more leniently. They each pleaded guilty and the magistrate imposed a fine of $25 each and $1 costs, with a caution that a repetition of the offence might prove more disastrous to them. Ready to build … The curling rink is an assured success in Cranbrook. This town has the right kind of people to take hold of any movement of this kind, and when they said that they wanted a rink here they simply raised the money and got ready to build it. It took $3,600 to do the business, but that did not worry the Cranbrook people. They raised the money and next week actual work starts on the rink. That is the way Cranbrook does things. Ouch … A. McKinnon met with an unfortunate accident yesterday. He was working on V. Hyde Baker’s automobile when the crank slipped and caught him on the wrist breaking it. Disgraceful … What is the matter with the fire hall? Is it to be left unpainted all winter? Strangers passing through on the train wonder what kind of a town this is that will permit such a state of affairs to exist. And again it is a mighty poor example for other property owners in the town. Breeding Stock … As was predicted a couple of weeks ago, the fine Peroeron stallion Kleber, that was brought here by L. F. Corey, one of the best known horsemen in western Canada, has been purchased by a syndicate of men in this district who have an interest in improving the stock of the country. This syndicate is composed of A. Doyle, King Mills Lumber company, James Wagner, R. L. T. Galbraith, Standard Lumber company, East Kootenay Lumber company and William Carlin. The people of this district owe a great deal to these enterprising people who have taken this important step toward bettering the stock conditions of this district and a few years from this time the people who are here will have reason to feel thankful for this important step that has been taken. The horse Kleber which has been purchased is one of the very best that has been imported by the well-known firm of McLaughlin Brothers, who make a business of bringing from France the best horses for breeding purposes that money can buy. A horse imported by this well-known firm needs no pedigree, for the reputation of the firm is sufficient pedigree for any animal that they handle. And back of this firm is the confidence and the good will of the republic of France, who are willing to back the reputation of that country on the reputation of this well-known firm of importers. The Herald congratulates the people who compose the syndicate and also Mr. Corey for the good Work that has been

Moyie Library … Several new books have been added to the Miners’ Union free reading room in McGregor hall. The list included 10 volumes of the Americanized Encyclopedia Britannica; Dickens’ complete works in 15 volumes; Descent of Man and Origin of the Species by Darwin; French Revolution, by Carlisle, in two volumes; Dantes’ Inferno; Kipling, in five volumes; Capt. Mayne Reid, fiction, in five volumes; 1 complete debater’s manual. The reading room is free and is open to all who wish to use it. Disappearing Glaciers …The glaciers this year have diminished at a wonderful rate. Some of them have receded from 100 to 200 feet further up than ever known before. This is due to the light snow fall last winter and the warm weather of the past season. Some of our prospectors state that if the glaciers continue to go as they have in the past ten years that in another ten years many of the smaller glaciers will disappear altogether. This season up Boulder creek and other creeks thousands of tons of ice have broken off and come with an awful roar tumbling down the hills, and prospectors tell of wonderful sights that they have witnessed. In July last the Outcrop reporter was up Boulder and crossed bare ground that the previous September was covered with ice ten feet thick. Thus some idea may be entertained of how rapidly the glaciers are melting. Marysville employment agency ... Wanted at once five hundred (500) men for bush, smelter, lumber mills and mining. Wages for bushmen, $2.50 and $60.00 a month. Employment for all kinds of laboring men. Employment all the year round. Write or call on A. P. Chenette. Skating rink ... A meeting was held at the Union Labor hall last Thursday owning for the purpose of devising ways and means for building a skating rink in Cranbrook. There was a good attendance and great interest manifested in the project. James Pinkman was called to the chair on motion of George Hoggarth, seconded by R, E. Beattie After some discussion Messrs. Rogers, Pinkham, and Simpson were named as a committee to ascertain the cost of a site, the water to be used and the lights. It was moved by R. E. Beattie, seconded by G. Hoggarth that George Hunter be asked to draw up plans for a rink 160 feet long, 60 feet center and two lanes of 20 feet each for curling and the necessary dressing and band rooms. On motion of Mr. Beattie, seconded by W. Gordon the following committee of eight were appointed to canvass the town for the purpose of ascertaining how much stock in a rink would be taken by the citizens: J. McSweyn, I. R. Manning, F. R. Morris, J. R. Motherwell, James Pinkham. H, Parsons, A. L. Mc Dermot and C. H. Dunbar, after which the meeting adjourned until this evening at 8 o’clock. The plans are all ready for submitting tonight and there should be a good meeting. If there is to be a rink and winter sports in Cranbrook this season there is no time to lose, Other towns in the district are already making arrangements for the season and Cranbrook should be up and doing.

Ice take step forward, two back, on road trip Kootenay picks up first win then come out flat in threegame Saskatchewan weekend BRAD MCLEOD
After starting out their 2016-17 campaign with five straight single-goal losses, the Kootenay Ice hoped to take advantage of their first extended road trip of the year to turn over a new leaf. Over Thanksgiving weekend, the Ice visited three Saskatchewan towns where they picked up their first win and then lost the next two. On Friday, the Ice earned an emotional 4-3 overtime victory over the Regina Pats before losing to the Moose Jaw Warriors 6-2 the next night. They then played the Swift Current Broncos on Monday, where they lost 4-3. “Friday was a big one for us, we got off to a real good start and got ourselves a lead,” Pierce said on their win over Regina. “[We] kind of saw the same story [as our first five games] unfolding but we did a heck of a job in the third period to keep ourselves together. “Coming out with the win was big and overall I thought [we] had a real good team effort.” For the first time this season, the Ice separated their two twenty-yearold forwards — Zak Zborosky and Matt Alfaro — onto different lines. The shake-up seems to have worked, as in the first period Zborosky scored twice and Alfaro once to put the Ice up 3-0 after the first period.
“The thought process was, being on the road, we don’t control the matchups and it makes us a pretty easy team to defend against when you put your two offensive producers on the same line,” Pierce said on the shake-up. “We wanted to get [Alfaro] going, he’d been playing well [and] just hadn’t got the results.” “I [thought] it gave us a little better-balanced attack and I thought we saw better efforts from [Philp] and [Loschiavo] playing with [Zborosky] on Friday, and Sheen and Wellsby played well with [Alfaro].” Although the Ice had squandered their threegoal lead by the start of the third period. They managed to push the game to overtime, thanks to stellar play from goalie Payton Lee. “[Lee] was great, I thought he was really efficient in the first couple of periods and we did a really good job in front of him,” Pierce said, “Then, late in the third on the powerplay and into overtime, he was brilliant.” Lee gave the Ice a chance to win and they took advantage of it. The game finally ended when Cale Fleury and Keenan Taphorn broke free on a two-on-none rush with less than a minute to go in overtime. Taphorn buried his opportunity and led the Ice players in a massive celebration.

Kootenay Ice rookie goaltender Jakob Walter watches on as Moose Jaw Warriors players skate by during a game on October 4, 2016. The Ice played the Warriors for the second time this year on Friday and fell 6-2. Unfortunately, the emotion of Friday’s victory seems to have perhaps overstimulated the Ice who couldn’t repeat their level of play the next night in Moose Jaw. “We found a way to get through the first period [against the Warriors] but we needed to get better,” Pierce said. “[I think] emotions were a little bit run out and [there was] some fatigue [but] we need to do a better job of preparing ourselves to move on after a big game like we had Friday night.” The Ice and Warriors traded powerplay goals in the first but Koote-
nay’s discipline problems really hampered them in the second and the Warriors stars took over the game, with their team putting up four unanswered goals. The opponent’s top line of Nikita Popugaev, Brett Howden, and Jayden Halbgewachs led the way and combined for 11 points on the night. The Warriors also scored three of their goals during their seven power play opportunities. “[We] can’t give them [that many] opportunities on the powerplay,” Pierce said on shutting down the opponent’s top
guys. “Our fatigue level led to us going back to the penalty box and [not getting penalties] is the first way you stop guys like that.” Alfaro and Zborosky were the lone goal scorers for the Ice in the losing effort, continuing their impressive stretch of play. Zborosky ended the weekend with seven goals in eight games, which has him tied for second amongst all WHL goal scorers. Declan Hobbs started in net against Moose Jaw but was chased after giving up his sixth goal at the start of the third. Lee then closed out the
night, saving 14 shots to close out the night. “I thought [Hobbs] did a good job in the first period of keeping us in it,” Pierce said. “He had a bit of a stumble their on their fourth goal which was unfortunate for him, but we’ve been extremely fortunate with how strong our goalies have been this year.” Monday afternoon’s game against Swift Current followed a similar storyline to what transpired in Moose Jaw. The Ice survived the first two periods and went into the third at 1-1. Penalty trouble then allowed the Broncos to build a 4-1
lead before the Ice came up short on a last-minute comeback. Rookies Nikita Radzivilyuk and Michael King scored their first ever goals for the Ice on Monday, while firstyear netminder Jakob Walter gave up four goals on 30 shots. The Ice are expected to re-assign one of their goaltenders this week. Kootenay’s next game is at home against the Regina Pats on Saturday, October 14. NOTE: Kaeden Taphorn received an upper-body injury on Friday and is expected to miss at least a week.

Dynamiters split weekend road games Nitros blast Rebels in Castlegar before coming under fire against the Columbia Valley Rockies, ending their winning streak
JOSH LOCKHART
On Friday, captain Ryan Hozjan said he wanted the Kimberley Dynamiters to show that they were a road team and they did just that this weekend. The team took their winning streak on the road to Castlegar on Friday where they beat the Rebels 6-1, before dropping a close game on Saturday in Invermere losing 3-2 to the Columbia Valley Rockies. Outside of being scored on first, it was all Dynamiters in Castlegar. The game was knotted for 40 minutes, and then saw an offensive burst by the Nitros in the third period. “The first nine minutes of the third period was our best attacking hockey,” said head
coach and general manager Derek Stuart. “They showed their potential as a team, I hope the players realize that.” Matt Davies gave the Nitros a 2-1 lead early in the third frame. Brandt Bertoia followed that up 90 seconds later with a goal of his own. Then Korbyn Chabot’s individual effort two minutes later put the Nitros up 4-1. Seventeen seconds later, Davies added his second, and the Nitros fifth of the game. Chabot then added the exclamation mark — a sixth goal — as he scored his second of the game with 56 seconds left to play. At the end of the night, two Nitros had a four-point game: James Farmer, who had one goal and three assists
and Chabot who had two goals and two assists. In net, Mitch Traichevich, the away star of the game, made 34 saves for the win. “Mitch gave us a chance to win, just as he has done before,” Stuart said. The Dynamiters returned home around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday from Castlegar. Slept, and then went at it again that night against the Columbia Valley Rockies. “We told the players to not let their minds tell them that they are tired,” Stuart said. “Give us one good shift at a time, and rest while on the bench, then give us another good effort.” For the Dynamiter fans, expectations were
high heading into a game against the lower seeded Rockies.
“The first nine minutes of the third period [against Castlegar] was our best attacking hockey. ” Derek Stuart “As a coaching staff, we prepare the team the same regardless of who we are playing.” However, maybe it was the bus legs, maybe
it was the mental fatigue, or maybe it was the desire to be flashy against a team lower than them in the standings, but the winning streak came to an end in Invermere, as an elated Rockies downed the Nitro’s 3-2, with three unanswered goals in a short window of time. The Kimberley Dynamiters did have an abundance of opportunities to change the outcome of the game, but couldn’t finish their chances. “Yes, we had 50 shots, but by my count, we had 16 scoring chances and didn’t finish them,” Stuart said, adding that he felt that the team didn’t play a full 60-minutes. “A lot of the goals scored against us came on mistakes
and lacklustre play.” California native Ruslan Katsnelson was in net for the Nitros and made 17 saves in his first, and the Dynamiters second, loss of the season. Despite scoring eight goals in the two games, the Dynamiters power play — the once deadly and a staple of the Dynamiters attack — continues to be a struggle this season. They scored one out of nine on Friday and were one for six on Saturday. Currently, it sits at 15th in the league at 14 percent efficiency. Stuart, however, is optimistic. “Our power play is still working on knowing what options are available.” All things consid-
ered, Stuart feels that this weekend’s results are to be expected from such a young squad— the Dynamiters have 13 rookies on their roster — and that it was a learning experience. The Dynamiters took Monday off from practice, as they rested up for another two-game out-of-division weekend road trip to Spokane on Friday and then Grand Forks on Saturday. MATCH STICKS: Bryce Salverda and Connor Kendall remain sidelined due to injuries. For up-to-date Kimberley Dynamiter information visit: www.kimberleydynamiters.net/ blog. Huncar’s Warrior Arts do battle in Cowtown FOR THE TOWNSMAN
Huncar’s Warrior Arts sent nine fighters to a Muay Thai and Kickboxing tournament last weekend and they did our community proud. The competitors included: Nova Bell, Ethan Gottinger, Mathew Gottinger, Dante Young, Lily Rudrum, Seth Ryley, Carter Duncan, Quinn Robertson and Daniel Burgess, all representing Huncar’s Warrior Arts. They were supported by coaches Joel Huncar, Nat Rudrum and Bryan Cockwell. The location of the tournament was Team Smandych Muay Thai in Calgary, in the Impact boxing gym. This is Calgary’s premiere Muay Thai gym and because Kru Trevor Smandych is such a well-known promoter over 100 fighters showed up for this event. The rook was electric, filled with nervous energy and excitement. Fighters warmed up in all corners of the room and the small group from our town quietly took a small space and began to get ready for the day. After warming up, the first to fight for the Cranbrook Team was Nova Bell. Nova fought hard to take home an impressive 2nd place
medal in girls age 9 to 10 kickboxing. Her fight was not painless and she took some hard shots like a champ. Nothing seemed to phase this little warrior as she answered every punch and kick with two of her own. But not having a break between opponents proved to be a little much for her and her exhaustion showed in the second round of the championship fight. She narrowly got beat out of first place and showed true championship heart in winning her medal. Next up were Ethan and Mathew Gottinger for boys ages 9 to 10 kickboxing. Unfortunately, Mathew got beaten out early in a very tight battle with a strong opponent. Ethan, however, seemed to take his twin brother’s admirable loss personally and fought like he had something to prove. Every boy who stood in front of Ethan was in for a battle. Like a true Warrior Ethan took very few steps back and pushed the pace. His strong kicks and aggression made him blow through every fighter who stood in front of him, letting him go home with a very
hard fought for first place medal. Lily Rudrum and Dante Young were the next to compete for HWA in the boys and girls ages 11 to 13 kickboxing event. There weren’t enough girls to separate the boys and girls so Lily had to jump into a very hard division. Unfortunately, Dante’s first fight was with his own teammate Lily and she had just finished fighting a tough opponent before him. They had a very respectful fight but Lily was just a little more aggressive and ended up getting the win. Lily had to fight two more times and was exhausted and hurt by the time she went into her last fight. She had just come back from a summer of no training and had jumped into a tournament with very little preparation. The fact that she came away with a third place medal in a very hard division is a testament to the potential of this little girl. Not only that but she got a victory over on of HWA’s toughest young fighters by beating Dante Young. Young is a very experienced and accomplished fighter. The next division
had two of the fastest most exciting HWA fighters. Seth Ryley and Carter Duncan were in for some vicious fighting in the 14 to 15-year-old boys Kickboxing division. Seth had a hard battle that could have gone either way with the boy who would eventually win the division. Carter battled through some action packed rounds, defeating two very tough opponents in battles that were a total blur of action. Fists and feet were flying and punishment was taken and given. Carter came away with a hard-earned second place medal and the respect of everyone watching the action in this amazing age group. Quinn Robertson showed his amazing skills in the boys’ age 16-17 kickboxing division. Quinn had one of the most technical fights of the day. Beautiful high kicks and vicious body kicks seem to be Robertson’s specialty. He landed some body kicks that made those watching wince and backed his opponent out of the ring. Robertson owned the ring and was in control through his entire
Members of Huncar’s Warrior Arts pose in their fighting stances after their tournament in Calgary. fight which gave him the first place medal and the satisfaction of a great performance under considerable pressure from a very skilled opponent. The only adult to compete from the local gym was Daniel Burgess who brawled his way to two very hard won first place medals in Novice Men’s Kickboxing and Novice Men’s Muay Thai. The highlight was when Burgess had an
opponent disrespectfully punch him as he went to touch gloves. Daniel fought hard but his opponent put him to the canvas with a hard uppercut. Burgess came back with a vengeance and clinched his opponent and fed him a flurry of vicious knees which put him down but not for the count. They began battling again and Burgess again kneed his opponent to the canvas.
Burgess came away battered and sore but satisfied that he proved himself in a very tough test. It is amazing that this little club from our town is able to prove itself time and time again. Being so far away from a major city Huncar’s Warrior Arts continues to prove that heart and hard work are all you need to build a gym filled with champions.

cutting ties because of a problematic wife Dear Annie: Sadly, my brother isn’t speaking to me. He is married with two children, 17 and 15. I have been part of their life, although it has been difficult. His wife is from a different country. Her family is all back there. She sabotages all efforts I make to see her children and has told me that my children and I are dead to her. They didn’t come to my daughter’s wedding and did not allow the children to come. We have never done anything to upset them; however, I have been told I am not a good sister-in-law because I didn’t live up to what she felt I should do. I worked full time, went to school and raised my girls while her children were young. She said she expected me to baby-sit and spend a lot of time with them. I have tried to contact the kids, but my brother says to not contact them. He has cut ties with everyone in our family, including his other siblings. My mother had serious health issues, and he does not allow his kids to see her. I think that his wife has mental health issues and that it is calmer when he does not have to deal with family. Any suggestions on keeping their children in our lives, or do we wait until they are older? -Hurting Aunt Dear Hurting: If your sister-in-law’s concern really were that you didn’t spend enough time with her children, then why would she ban you from their lives? It sounds as if she indeed has severe anger or anxiety issues and would settle on anything to resent; for now, that’s you and your relationship with her children, but if it weren’t that, it would be something else. It’s disappointing that your brother has allowed his wife’s mental illness to dictate their entire lives. He’s in deep. Your niece and nephew are probably aware that their grandmother isn’t well, because people that high-strung fill whole households with tension. It would be good for the children to have healthier family members in their lives, and you should make an effort to give them that. But wait until they are 18. If you reached out to them now, it would only make your brother and his wife angry, and your niece and nephew are stuck living with that stress. Dear Annie: As the Northern English say, you got the “wrong end of the stick” on your advice to “Crackberry Wife,” whose husband is constantly on his phone working. I lived a crackberry life before I had children, and I was able to learn how to let go of my addiction to work and actually be present for the child I chose to have. Mr. Crackberry can make the same choice, and he is choosing not to, as his wife enables him. Your advice that he is offering a strong work model to the kids is completely wrong. He is teaching his kids that men can ignore you and can’t be interrupted, whereas good ol’ Mommy is apparently always available to be interrupted. Further, why would you advise her to be happy that her husband spends 30 to 60 minutes a day with his children? That isn’t parenting. Emotional connections are difficult and hard work. He cannot be a good father until he learns patience and how to listen well. He needs boundaries. He needs to tell his kids and wife when he is working, and he needs to tell them that he will make time for them during which he will not answer work calls. If he is not willing to do that, he is not willing to parent or be a spouse and he is a negative influence for the whole family. -- Lisa N. The Abreast in the Rockies Dragonboat team practicing on Moyie Lake
Abreast in the Rockies
Dragonboat team ends success-filled season Submitted
Abreast in the Rockies Dragon Boat Team have hung up our paddles after another year of fitness, festivals and fun. The team enjoyed a successful 2016 season and welcomed a number of new members. We began our season in February with dry land training using a program devised by trainer, Jodie Pickering. In May we were off to the pool for technique training and practice led by coaches Diane Butz with help from Martina Frensemeier and Valerie Ward. Near the end of May the team was excited to finally get on the water! Training and practicing began at Jim Smith Lake before we moved to Moyie for most of July, August and September. Our coaches, drummers and steerspersons guided us through all of our practices. We attended our first festival in Lethbridge in June. This was a brand new experience for our newest members and of course hard work and fun for everyone. The team won silver in the C event and the survivors, with help from other breast cancer survivors attending the festival
paddled hard to win gold. In September we were off to Flathead Lake, near Kalispell Montana to compete. The weather with strong winds did not cooperate and some races had to be cancelled but our team members braved the choppy waters and went on to receive 2nd in the A Consul race being just one tenth of a second behind the winners! During the season we continued to fundraise for breast cancer awareness, projects and team equipment. We are proud to have supported the EKFH Starlight campaign once again. We are breast cancer survivors and supporters and our purpose is to raise breast cancer awareness and to demonstrate that women living with breast cancer can lead full and active lives. We marched in the Sam Steele parade carrying a banner to thank all of those in the community who have supported our team. We couldn’t do it without them! We are saddened to mark the passing of our humble and kind friend, Bob. Bob was born in Fairholm, Saskatchewan to Robert and Helen Connochie and was raised with his sisters, Doris and Mary, as well as his brother Dick. Bob spent his early years living and loving the western life – a culture he continued to enjoy through its music and magazines. He was especially proud of once breaking a horse at the age of fourteen – a memento of this accomplishment still hung on his wall. Bob was skilled in many areas, working in construction, primarily. His other occupations included driving taxi and trucks, operating heavy machinery, and handyman for a lake house in Kelowna. He also enjoyed performing renovations and “flippingâ€? houses. Bob was especially fond of children, having raised four of his own – Dick, Dave, Dan, and Cheryl – not to mention seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. He shared the love of family with his life-long love of forty-five years, Betty Nelson. The call of the road took Bob to such exotic locales as Australia, Thailand, and Arizona where he spent six months of the year. His new calling takes him further into the universe now, and we will miss our quiet friend until we meet again. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial donation in honour of Bob may do so to the: Alzheimer Society of B.C., #300, 828 - West 8th Avenue, Vancouver, B.C., V5Z 1E2. B.C. mine cleanup marks deal with Alaska Tom Fletcher Black Press
The B.C. government is proceeding with cleanup assessment of an abandoned gold mine project on the Taku River system, as it puts in place a joint oversight system with Alaska to clear the way for future B.C. mine developments. B.C. Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett said the B.C. government is taking over the cleanup after the latest owner of the Tulsequah Chief project, 100 km south of Atlin, went bankrupt like its predecessor. The old exploration project affects one of the rivers flowing from B.C. into Alaska waters, the Taku, Unuk, Alsek and Stikine. B.C.’s Red Chris mine is the only operating mine in the region, on the Stikine system, and two other large

cial crisis, on a mineral deposit originally explored by Cominco in the 1950s. Bennett toured the Tulsequah Chief site in 2015 with Alaska Lt.
Governor Byron Mallott. Chieftain Metals built a water treatment plant and was doing assessment of acid and heavy metal pollution from its entrance tunnel to the
Tulsequah River when it halted operations. “The company had committed to ecosystem risk management study, but they’ve gone broke so we’re doing it ourselves,” Bennett said. “We’re going to pay for it ourselves and we’re in the last stages of hiring a contractor to do that work for the two ministries.” The bilateral working group with Alaska and B.C. representatives will first gather baseline data on water conditions in the shared river systems. Bennett credited Mallott’s work with Alaska tribes and commercial fishing organizations to represent them in negotiations with B.C. Their protests to Alaska government officials surged after the Mount Polley mine tailings pond failure in B.C. as new mines were proposed for areas affecting Alaska.
Federal move a blow to housing affordability: economist
“It will ripple out beyond the first-time home buyer market,” Pastrick said, adding existing owners seeking to sell or downsize are often dependent on a first-time buyer purchasing their home. Pastrick is in the process of scaling down Central 1’s forecasts for real estate market and B.C. economic growth for 2017 as a result of the mortgage rule change. He expects a five per cent decline in benchmark home prices over the next six to nine months, coupled with lower sales. But Pastrick predicts the real estate market will stabilize over time, not collapse. “Markets will adjust –this is not the beginning of the end of the cycle,” he said, citing the strong trends of growth for B.C.’s economy, jobs and population.

Muir argued the mortgage qualification rule could have been phased in gradually. “The shock over a number of years wouldn’t be the same shock we’re now going to see in the markets.” He said the change threatens to have broader impacts, potentially triggering a drop in home construction activity, associated jobs and economic growth. Helmut Pastrick, chief economist for Central 1 Credit Union, said he expects some drop in sales to first time home buyers as a result. First time buyers account for a larger proportion of sales in more affordable regions like the Fraser Valley and Okanagan – up to 35 per cent – compared to around 25 per cent near Vancouver. Unlike the foreign buyer tax B.C. has imposed only in Metro Vancouver, Pastrick said the federal mortgage qualification change is “indiscriminate” and applies everywhere, even where overheated real estate has not been a problem.

Millennials trying to buy their first homes face a dramatic hit to the amount they can borrow as a result of the federal government’s move to tighten mortgage qualification rules later this month. That’s the warning from B.C. Real Estate Association chief economist Cameron Muir, who says the federal finance minister’s announcement Monday flies in the face of government efforts to improve housing affordability at the low end of the market. “It’s going to have a dramatic impact on affordability for millennials,” Muir said. “As much as 20 per cent of their purchasing power has been eliminated. Many of them will be squeezed completely out of the marketplace.” Effective Oct. 17, buyers with less than a 20 per cent down payment – most first time buyers – will need enough income to qualify at a higher benchmark interest rate posted by the Bank of Cana-
da, even though their actual payments are based on the lower rate retail banks offer them. Right now the gap between the two rates is around two per cent, so the rule is equivalent to a sudden interest rate spike of that amount for many buyers. Muir said a couple with combined annual income of $80,000 and a five per cent down payment can currently buy a home priced at about $500,000. “That’s going to fall to about $400,000,” he said. “That’s a $100,000 reduction in their purchasing power. That’s a substantial hit to affordability.” It’s the sharpest government-imposed cut to what new home buyers can afford in years, he said, predicting millennials will bear the brunt. “Unlike previous generations, their purchasing power has now been reduced through government policy.” Finance Minister Bill Morneau unveiled the change as one of a series of measures to reduce risk in overheated housing markets.

Resident campaigns against $10 million plan
Wendell Dalke concerned about potential tax hike with potential AAP loan TRE VOR CR AWLEY

If anyone is interested in getting involved with Dalke’s campaign, he can be reached at 250-489-3909.

“Without having those partnerships built, these programs aren’t really possible and they won’t come to fruition, especially in a Tanzanian context where government funding is very limited.” The delegation — Mrs. Hildegardis Bitegera, Mr. John Kengese, Mr. Charles Mpambwe and Mr. Edwin Temu — were toured through Mount Baker on Thursday by Hay and Brian Conrad, the Regional Transitions Coordinator. The tour included stops in the woodwork-
drafting, automotive and electronics shops of the high school, so the delegation could see the equipment and watch the students in action. “This particular visit to Cranbrook and Victoria is all about institutional capacity-building,” said Hay. “So that’s a particular phrase I’ve been using to organize the entire week.” In addition to touring Mount Baker Secondary School, the Tanzanian delegation participated in workshops led by COTR staff on career guidance counselling and the logistics of providing short courses. Short courses, or

The Student Services department also met with the delegation to talk about career guidance counselling, resume-writing and interviewing techniques. During the high school tour, led by Paul Duczek, a shop instructor, and Conrad, the delegation learned about programs such as GEMS — Girls Exploring Manual Skills — where girls can try skilled trades in an all-female environ-

The partnership project with MRVTSC is funded by the federal government through Global Affairs Canada and administered by Colleges and Institutes Canada.
