Bountiful trial adjourned until February decision Tre vor Cr awley
The trial is over in the case of three members of the polygamous community of Bountiful, but a verdict isn’t expected until the New Year. Justice Paul Pearlman will now review the evidence and the case law presented by both special prosecutor and a defence lawyer for one of the three accused. Brandon James Blackmore, Gail (Emily Ruth) Blackmore and James Oler are charged with removal of a child from Canada, under a criminal code subsection that their removal would facilitate sexual touching or sexual interference. A verdict from Pearlman is expected to be delivered in Cranbrook Supreme Court on Feb. 3, 2017, at 10 a.m. The allegations: Brandon James
Blackmore and Gail Blackmore brought their 13-year-old daughter into the U.S. to be married to Warren Jeffs, the leader and prophet of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) in March 2004. James Oler is charged with bringing his 15-year-old daughter into the U.S. to be married to another FLDS member in June 2004. At the heart of the issue for Justice Pearlman to consider are two Latin terms — actus reus, the physical act of committing a criminal offence, and mens rea, the intent to commit an criminal offence. As always in criminal prosecutions, the burden is on the Crown to prove that the accused are guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Traffic stop leads to charges of assaulting police officer For the Townsman
Cranbrook RCMP are requesting a Cranbrook couple be charged with assaulting two police officers after a traffic stop in the early morning hours of December 4. As a part of National Impaired Driving Week, Cranbrook RCMP were conducting a roadblock in the 1700 Block of 2nd Street North at roughly 2 a.m. A black Hyundai pulled up to the road block and when the driver’s window was down the police officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Both occupants were placed under arrest for Possession of a

controlled substance. One man took exception to being arrested and was belligerent to the police officer. When attempting to handcuff him, the man refused to listen to direction and then braced himself against the police car in an attempt to keep officers from handcuffing him. The man then spat on a police officer and was subsequently arrested. After grabbing a police officer, a woman, the driver of the vehicle, is also facing charges. Both face charges of assaulting a police officer and obstruction and will appear in court on February 14, 2017.

Local birders to take part in 117th annual Christmas Bird Count DARYL CALDER
The annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) — the longest-running Citizen Science survey in the world — will take place from December 14, 2016, to January 5, 2017. Cranbrook, Kimberley and Fernie naturalists will join tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas to take part in an adventure that has become a family tradition among generations. Families and students, birders and scientists, armed with binoculars, bird guides and checklists go out on an annual mission - often before dawn to count the birds. For over one hundred years, the desire to both make a difference and to experience the beauty of nature has driven dedicated people to leave the comfort of a warm house during the Holiday season. Each of the citizen scientists who annually brave snow, wind, or rain, to take part in the Christmas Bird Count makes an enormous contribution to
conservation. Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations - and to help guide conservation action. From feeder-watchers and field observers to count compilers and regional editors, everyone who takes part in the Christmas Bird Count does it for love of birds and the excitement of friendly competition —and with the knowledge that their efforts are making a difference for science and bird conservation. You are invited to join these local counts. For more information about CBC participation or helping by watching your feeders in the East Kootenays please contact: • Fernie: Thursday, December 15 – Mike Bentley at 250-430-7766 • Cranbrook: Wednesday, December 28 – Greg Ross at 250-489-2566 • Kimberley: Wednesday, January 4 – Dianne Cooper at 250-427-1921
He could see glowing eyes in the foliage. Nelson hunter Chris O’Gorman was field-dressing a bagged deer on the bank of the Lardeau River last week when he heard something crashing through the bush nearby. That’s when he saw an ursine snout peek out from the trees. “I’m dragging the deer back to the canoe when I hear a large animal crashing through the brush toward me,” O’Gorman told the Star. “I jump backwards to the edge of the river, yelling, knife in hand. I could see the glowing eyes of a bear through the brush. He was huffing and puffing and grunting aggressively, crashing around the bush at close range.” But O’Gorman wasn’t willing to give up his prize. “In nature, size matters, and he was telling me that he was coming to take my deer and there wasn’t a damn thing I was gonna do about it. And the worst part was that my rifle was leaning on my pack 50 feet away.” So he slowly made his way along the shoreline. “I kept hollering at him as I slowly retrieved my gun, telling him he was welcome to the gut pile but he wasn’t taking my deer.‘Give me two more minutes and I’ll be outta your hair!’” O’Gorman returned to the deer carcass, tentatively. “I got back to my deer, rifle in hand. My eyes darting back and forth, still yelling, trying to sound brave. I was expecting his charge at any moment. “ I heaved the deer into the canoe unceremoniously and pushed off with my paddle.”
Nelson cab driver Chris O’Gorman had a close encounter with a bear last week. Nelson residents mostly know O’Gorman from a 2014 rescue in which he used a canoe to rescue a senior citizen near Slocan Pool. He won a Lifesaving Award for putting his life at risk in order to save the man, but this time the only award was the fresh-killed
meat. “This was my last outing of a great hunting season. Time to hang up the rifle and take down the skis, and see what adventures winter brings,” he said. Just as he pushed out into the current, it began to snow.

Cranbrook gets funding for deer relocation Tre vor Cr awl ey
The provincial government has doled out $19,900 to the City of Cranbrook that will go towards an urban deer relocation study to ship out problem ungulates in the community. The grant is one of four coming to communities in the East Kootenay; Invermere, Grand Forks and Elkford are also receiving funding that divides up roughly $100,000 between each area.
Grand Forks, Invermere and Elkford are planning culls in their communities; Elkford is expected to cull 50 deer, Invermere is looking at culling 51 deer, while Grand Forks is hoping to cull 80 deer. Cranbrook’s funding will build upon an urban-deer relocation program that started last year, in partnership with Elkford, Invermere and Kimberley, with VAST Resource Solutions conducting the technical
study. A fifth community on Vancovuer Island, Oak Bay, is also under consideration for urban deer funding, however, the province is still reviewing the community’s plan. Oak Bay is looking at using immuno-contraceptive drugs designed to prevent deer from reproducing but further study and planning is needed to make sure the drugs are delivered in a humane and effective way.
Bountiful trial adjourned until February decision Continued from page 1 Did Brandon James Blackmore, Gail Blackmore and James Oler remove their daughters from Canada? Was there any criminal intent? But consideration must be given beyond simply the removal of Canada aspect; Crown must also prove beyond a reasonable doubt that there was both criminal action and intent to facilitate sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching. In order to do that, Justice Pearlman will consider evidence such as witness testimony from former FLDS members of the Bountiful community, police investigators, and records seized from U.S. law enforcement during a raid on an FLDS compound in Texas in 2008. Along with the evidence, there is also case law and past judgements from various levels of the Canadian courts to consider. Much of the evidence given during the trial surrounded what women, who were former FLDS members, were taught and how they were expected to live in the Bountiful community. Obedience to the priesthood-head, the male patriarch of the family, whether it be the father or the husband, is a key tenant of FLDS doctrine. The FLDS prophet gives commands based on revelations from the Lord, which includes determining marriage partners for couples who sometimes have not even met each other until minutes before the ceremony. The Crown alleges that because of FLDS doctrine concerning marriage, Brandon James Blackmore and Gail Blackmore should have known that when Jeffs ordered the two down to the U.S. and said their daughter ‘belongs to me’, they should have known that would mean a marital union, therefore facilitating the offence of
sexual touching and sexual interference. The Crown alleges the same inference goes for Oler, that he committed a criminal act by facilitating his 15-year-old daughter’s marriage to James Leroy Johnson in the U.S., following a command from Jeffs in June 2004. Of the three accused, only Brandon James Blackmore has a lawyer — John Gustafson. While Gail Blackmore and James Oler are self-represented, they do have the services of Joe Doyle, a court-appointed lawyer who can poke holes in the Crown’s case, but cannot offer the accused any legal advice or strategy. Gustafson argued Brandon Blackmore did not bring his daughter across the border, as U.S. Customs records only show him and Gail crossing into Idaho in Feb. 2004. Though an FLDS marriage record confirms a wedding between Jeffs and Blackmore’s daughter, Gustafson argued that the decision to allow the marriage was made in the U.S. and that the criminal components of the act and intent were formed outside Canadian jurisdiction. Doyle argued that there is no direct evidence of Oler removing his daughter from Canada; a witness testified she met Oler and his daughter at a rest stop in Idaho after crossing the border and they then travelled to Cedar City in Utah together. The same witness, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, said she attended school with Oler’s daughter in Bountiful and school records confirm her presence there until Feb. 2004. An FLDS marriage record notes a ceremony between Oler’s daughter and Johnson occurred on June 25, 2004, in Mesquite, Nevada.

Vandalism mars Cranbrook’s new washrooms in Rotary Park F o r t h e To w n s m a n
City Public Works crews spent several hours Friday removing graffiti and repairing damage to the new Rotary Park washrooms. Staff report that vandals used sharpies to draw on the walls, the floors and partitions in the newly opened wash-
rooms and damaged one of the baby changing stations. As a result, Public Works will now keep the men’s and women’s main washrooms closed for the winter months, while the single occupant family washroom will remain open for public use. If a user group has the park
booked or a larger public event is scheduled for Rotary Park, Public Works will ensure the full facility is open and available. The City of Cranbrook apologizes for any inconvenience this issue may cause and appreciates the understanding of our residents.

Preschool Story Time is this Wednesday at 11 am, 1:15 pm, & 6:30 pm, and Toddler Story Time is 10 and 11 am. Both will be all about Christmas trees! New this season is Baby Laptime on Fridays at 1 pm. This program is for babies who are not yet walking so a specific age is not really set — best approximation is under 1 year of age. Since we do not have daycare for older siblings we ask that parents who have babies and children who are walking come to the toddler storytime instead of the baby laptime. FOOD FOR FINES: For the entire month of December, the Library will be accepting donations of non-perishable food as payment for overdue fines. One item will be worth one dollar of fines. Any canned or boxed non-perishable food items will be accepted. All donations will be delivered to the food bank throughout the holiday season. Selkirk Secondary kicks off food bank fundraiser Submit ted
For many, Christmas is a time of happiness, family gatherings, great meals, treats and presents. For some in our community, Christmas is not a happy or fun time. There are families where money is tight and there may not be enough to buy food for the holidays or gifts for family members. To help assist these families, we will once again participate in our biggest fundraiser of the year to support the Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank. Kimberley’s Food Bank has as many as 150 volunteers in any given year and donates money to many organizations. Selkirk Secondary has supported the Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank for over 28 years and we are once again asking our students to assist the community in a very positive way by selling at least one book of ($20 of tickets) on behalf of the Food Bank. Each ticket costs $2. If each student sold one book we would raise just over $6,800. We hope to match or
surpass this amount this year! In each community in Kimberley there has been a home or business chosen as a “mystery“ location. If a student goes to one of these locations to sell a ticket, they will be given a coupon for a $20 cash prize that they can claim at school. The coupons will be given out from the school to each location should anyone try and sell a ticket at that home/business. We have prizes for the top three ticket sellers, the sellers of the winning tickets and the top three selling classes. The grand prizes are $1,000, $500 and $250. For your general interest the Food Bank is located in the basement of the Anglican Church which is right across from the Husky on Wallinger Ave. The Food Bank is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 am until 3 pm. Volunteers are appreciated. Once again, thank you in advance for supporting a very worthwhile community event. Let’s sell those tickets!

Rethinking the Russian Revolution GWYNNE DYER
“We
have imagined how things would have been at that time if there was an internet and people were using social media,” said Mikhail Zygar, the creator of the biggest-ever interactive historical website. It’s called “1917: Free History”, and it’s a quietly subversive attempt to make Russians think about how they ended up where they are now. Zygar is one of Russian’s best journalists. He was the editor-in-chief of Dozhd (Rain), the only independent TV news channel in the country, until he resigned — or more likely was forced to resign — last year. But he’s back with an extraordinary project: to relive the events leading up to the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 as if the people involved, from statesmen to private citizens, had been posting daily on social media. More than one hundred journalists, historians and web professionals worked for a year, trawling through letters, diaries and archives to come up with authentic material written by people who were living the history one day at a time. The characters include all the big figures from the Tsar and Rasputin to Lenin and Trotsky, but also artists, writers, soldiers, workers and housewives. And they were all following current events closely, because it was the middle of the First World War. There are 1,500 characters, each posting Facebook-style updates on their activities and impressions, their hopes and fears, all drawn from what they actually wrote at the time. You can “like” specific characters and follow them on a regular basis. You can even ask them questions and send them messages. (Tsar Nicolas II has already received several warnings that he and his family will be killed by the Bolsheviks.) “1917: Free History” has no obvious political stance. It offers no conclusions,
Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, better known by the alias Lenin and the comments of the various characters come without any interpretation. The public justification for this massive undertaking is simply that next year is the centenary of the Bolshevik (Communist) Revolution, the biggest turning point in modern Russian history. And yet... And yet Mikhail Zygar is a very political man, a liberal who has consistently resisted the lies and manipulations of the Putin regime. So what is he really up to? What would Zygar like people to conclude after their fifteen-month journey through Russia’s hundred-year-ago history? All he will say is that “Everything that happened to us in the 20th century and is happening now is a consequence of the events of 1917.” That includes not only of the crimes and tragedies of the Soviet era but also what “is happening now.” And now is not a good time in Russia either. Russians are not enthusiastic readers of history, but any intelligent Russian who follows “1917” through to the end will know that while the first (democratic) revolution in March 1917 was probably inevitable, given the Tsar’s gross mismanagement of the Russian war effort, the second revolution was not inevitable at all. It was a
fluke, a “Black Swan”, a highly improbable event that happened anyway. The October Revolution that brought the Communists to power was not really a revolution. It was a coup d’etat, led by a small goup of ruthless Bolsheviks with the support of some troops in the capital. When the election that had already been scheduled took place two weeks later, the Bolsheviks won only 175 out of 715 seats in the parliament — but that didn’t matter by then, because the Bolsheviks immediately dissolved the parliament and ruled by decree. And the point of bringing up this old history is not to prove that the Communists were bad; it is to show that they were not inevitable. Most Russians are fatalistic about their history. They believe that it’s all their own fault, because they are the kind of people they are. If you believe that, then you believe that seventy years of Communist dictatorship were inevitable, that the civil war, the famines and the great purges were inevitable, that tyranny, corruption and poverty are inevitable — and that Putin or somebody like him is inevitable now. But none of that is true. Change just one little detail in the run-up to the October Revolution — for example, what if the Germans had not shipped Lenin to Russia in the hope that he would seize power and take Russia out of the war? — and the improbable Communist seizure of power becomes impossible. Once you have realised that the Communist coup was just bad luck and not Russia’s inevitable fate, all the subsequent bad history ceases to be inevitable too. The country just turned down the wrong road in 1917, but another turn could put it on the right road. Is that the message Zygar is trying to get across? I suspect it is, although he is far too intelligent to believe it will have any immediate effect. It’s just a drop in the bucket — but it’s a pretty big drop, and eventually the bucket may overflow.

China’s worst addiction isn’t coal What’s Up?
NANJING, CHINA – It’s a four-hour bullet train ride from Beijing to this 2,000-year-old former capital city on the Yangtze River. The electric train glides so smoothly it’s hard to accept the information ticker above the door showing the speed passing 300 km/h. Tidy farms whiz by in a morning haze after the seemingly endless urban landscape of Beijing finally recedes. Among the sights emerging from the smog is a coalfired power plant, its smokestacks and cooling towers surrounded by high-voltage lines carrying electricity to run the trains and light the glittering skyscrapers of the cities. Alongside the traffic gridlock, Nanjing’s streets boast bike lanes that Vancouver’s mayor can only dream about, teeming with electric scooters and tradesman tricycles along with old-fashioned muscle-powered bikes. But like the trains and the Tesla sports cars of the wealthy Chinese, these battery-powered conveyances are mainly running on coal. China is confronting its coal addiction. The National Energy Administration officially booked into rehab in April, announcing that the next 200 planned coal power plants may not be built, and those already approved will be postponed until at least 2018. Annual coal consumption has actually
started to decline slightly after rising from three billion tonnes to five billion over the last 15 years. The outskirts of Nanjing, population seven million and soaring, are dotted with construction cranes. In China they build high-rises in clusters of eight or a dozen at a time. At Nanjing Tech University, engineers are working on advanced wood construction techniques. Working with Canada Wood, the industry-government agency BC VIEWS with trade offices in Asia, they are building arched Tom bridges and public buildFletcher ings to demonstrate the stylish carbon sinks that can replace concrete. Nanjing is the commercial centre of Jiangsu, designated as the pilot province for residential and commercial wood construction. While in Beijing, I attended a conference on illegal logging, co-sponsored by China’s State Forest Administration and the Canadian Forest Service. The need for a change in construction was illustrated with a few numbers from a Chinese official. At current consumption rates, China uses as much concrete in two years as the U.S. would in a century. The fuel- and carbon-intensive kilns that make cement are chewing through China’s supply of limestone at a rate that it would cause it to run

out in 30 years. A State Forest Administration official outlined efforts to certify wood sources used by China, which has cracked down on unregulated logging within the country. He dismissed as “rumours” the suggestion that China is one of the biggest importers of wood from places like Indonesia, which strips and burns its rainforests to plant vast areas of palm oil trees. China has sealed its border against imports from Burma, another environmental outlaw state, but still imports from Russia and other questionable sources. (When I checked these “rumours” from my hotel room later, the censored Chinese internet allowed a Wikipedia page that described China and Japan as the biggest buyers of illegal wood, but the links to sources were all blocked, along with Google and Twitter.) Here in B.C., we are indoctrinated from primary school to TV news with the notion that all logging is bad, especially ours. Nothing could be further from the truth. As our urban protester community strives to keep the 20-year-old “war in the woods” alive, the rest of the world is moving on. And that includes newly empowered aboriginal people across B.C., who are redefining the concept of ethical wood and aiming to bring needed prosperity to their communities. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. RUN TIL END OF APRIL - STOP FOR SUMMER - THEN RESTART SEPT.6TH

NEWS Local communties make gains in water conservation
FOR THE TOWNSMAN
After seven years of focused effort, 26 participating Water Smart communities in the Columbia Basin have made tremendous gains in water conversation skills and strategies, and most were successful in reducing overall water use, with local achievements ranging from 2 to 39 per cent. “Columbia Basin communities have worked hard and have been recognized as emerging leaders in water conservation,” says Tim Hicks, Columbia Basin Trust Manager, Water and Environ-
ment. “Their collective accomplishments are significant, and could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of each participating community. I offer my congratulations for being leaders in water conservation and working together to conserve our water resources.” Water Smart’s collaborative, regional, data-driven model has been recognized as unique, and academics, utility professionals and water experts across Canada are taking note of the success and its transferability to other

regions. Through Water Smart, the Trust provided a wide range of resources to participating communities: • A technical support team • A public outreach program called Water Smart Ambassadors • Accredited training for water utility operators • Support to collect and analyze water use data more accurately, which helped communities identify how to conserve water most effectively • An online hub for sharing news, tools and resources • Community-specific Water Smart Action Plans • Grants for community water conservation projects. “Our participation in Water Smart has been instrumental in our community’s water conservation success,” said Dave Cockwell, Director of Operational Services, City of Fernie. “One-to-
one support for water conservation planning and practical training has resulted in significant and sustainable water savings. It has also improved our capacity to continue this work into the future as a normal part of water utility operations.” Across the Basin, staff in Water Smart communities developed cutting-edge expertise in water loss management, used technologies and practices to support sustainable water system opera-

Rockets blow out Ice on Teddy Bear Toss night Kootenay suffer 7-3 defeat on Saturday at Western Financial Place after heartbreaking 4-3 loss on Friday in Spokane BR AD MCLEOD
It was a festive night for the Kootenay Ice (619-7-1), but it was the Kelowna Rockets (1911-1-0) who got to celebrate at the end of the night. In their 18th annual A&W Teddy Bear, Toque and Mitten Toss night, the Ice were unable to come out victorious and ended a four-game stretch of one-goal games with a 7-3 beat down. “Nothing went right [Saturday], which is unfortunate because we’ve been playing some really good hockey recently,” said Ice head coach Luke Pierce, after the game. “We didn’t get any breaks early on and it didn’t seem like we were prepared to play.” Kootenay was immediately behind the eight ball against a high-octane Rockets team. Kelowna scored three times in the opening frame, putting up 13 shots, while the Ice only had six shots to counter and were held scoreless. On Teddy Bear night, fans are encouraged to bring wrapped teddies, toques and mittens and throw them on the ice when Kootenay scores their first goal.
After seeing their home team score in the opening minute of the last two years’ events, anxious Kootenay fans were forced to hold on to their plush toys through the first intermission.
“It just wasn’t our night. We haven’t been bad for quite some time […] Kelowna caught us off guard a bit [since] we haven’t played a team like that in awhile.” Luke Pierce Luckily for them, Troy Murray let them toss to their heart’s delight with a power play goal just under two minutes into the second period. “It’s definitely a goal [that] everyone wants to score, and thankfully I got it,” Murray said with a smile following the game. “I think I even got hit in the head with a teddy bear, so it was a good time.” Unfortunately, after a quick clean up, the
Rockets countered almost immediately as Leif Mattson put in the eventual game-winner from Jake Kryski and Connor Bruggen-Cate. Vince Loschiavo would counter quickly, pushing his goal-scoring streak to five games, with linemates Matt Alfaro and Zak Zborosky picking up assists. In the third period, Jake Kryski put in two goals before Max Patterson put away his third goal of the year, to give the Ice some consolation. Kryski and teammate Calvin Thurkauf both had four-point nights for the Rockets (two goals and two assists), while Zborosky had a pair of assists to continue his strong season for the Ice. For Pierce, the game wasn’t a reflection on any gaping holes in the team’s game or a sign of major problems. It was just an off-night for the team. “It just wasn’t our night,” he said. “We haven’t been bad for quite some time… we couldn’t get a bounce, we couldn’t execute any passes. [Kelowna] is a big physical team [and] we talked about that,

Ice in what was otherwise, a great night for the team. Pierce admitted that the way that one ended, may have played into the loss the next day. “The way we lost [in Spokane] may have affected us a little bit,” he said. “We played well enough to win [that one] in my opinion… we didn’t get any breaks early on tonight and it
festered and turned into this result.” Although there weren’t many positives coming out of the night, the Ice managed to score twice on five power play chances while shutting down the Rockets on all five of their man-advantages. Pierce felt his team did an okay job of keeping their cool, despite
the frustration of the night. “I didn’t think we were overly undisciplined in general, it was just bad timing on the penalties that we took,” he said. “I’m not going to over-analyze this game, it was just one of those days for us.” The Ice’s next game is on Wednesday as they take on the Swift Current Broncos at home.
Dynamiters win back-to-back home games Kimberley has perfect weekend at Civic Centre, tied with Creston Valley Thunder Cats for Eddie Mountain division lead JOSH LOCKHART
The Kimberley Dynamiters had a big weekend as they took down two divisional opponents. First, they declawed the Creston Valley Thunder Cats with a 6-4 win at home. Then they followed it up with controlling 4-0 win over the Columbia Valley Rockies. Against the Thunder Cats, the Nitros power play was clicking early as they took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission with goals by James Farmer and Chase Miller. “We just focused on our power play and a few things we had to do,” said head coach and general manager Derek Stuart. “The main thing is [a] generic [idea] that everyone says — that is moving pucks quicker
and getting pucks at the net — it’s nothing extraordinary or mind blowing, it’s just simple hockey.” In the middle frame, Miller gave the Nitros a 3-0 lead. But the Cats clawed their way back into the game, cutting their lead down to one. In the final 20 minutes, the score doubled for both teams. Devon Langelaar scored a power play goal and then Korbyn Chabot added two more strikes, for a final score of 6-4. The Dynamiters came away with a solid win on home ice against the Cats, who had previously dealt the Nitros a couple of losses in Creston. “It’s a matter of two teams being very, very hard to beat on their home ice,” Stuart said. “It’s an arena that we
take pride in. The players and the coaching staff really enjoy and appreciate the fans that come out to our games. “We try to do our best for them and reward them, not only with a victory but with hard work that they can be proud of.” There were two firsts in this game — it was recently acquired Nic Herringer’s first game as a Nitro, and it was George Bertoia’s first game back from being injured. “Herringer was really good in his first game with a bunch of new systems being thrown at him in a day. He fits in real well with what we are trying to do here.” Bertoia was excited to be back in the game. “It was good, just to be back winning with the boys,” he said. “ It’s a
lot better than sitting in the stands.” The Dynamiters then prepared for yet another game against the Columbia Valley Rockies. Despite the Dynamiters pouring 18 shots on net, it was scoreless after 20 minutes. The Dynamiters took control in the second period, though. “We had to give them a little kick in the butt to remind them that they are not better than anyone else unless they go out and prove it,” Stuart recalled. “They didn’t do that in the first. In the second we were better, moving feet, moving pucks. We controlled the puck and the game in the second period.” The Dynamiters scored three goals in the span of four minutes. Newcomer Nolan Kurylo got the Nitros on the
board first, followed by Matt Davies, and Brandt Bertoia. Brandt Bertoia would eventually get three points in the game, in front of some special guests “My parents made the drive down from Unity, Saskatchewan,” he said. “I like to make them proud. [But I also like] proving to the team, players, and coaches, what I can do. They showed some trust in me, and I should show them why.” The Dynamiters then added their fourth goal of the game, courtesy of Caige Sterzer, as the Nitros secured a 4-0 victory over the Rockies. Cody Campbell made 23 saves for his second shutout of the week. It’s been a big week for him as he took the starter role after
Mitch Traichevich was traded to Dawson Creek for Cody Call. “I feel very confident in my abilities,” Campbell said. “I can’t see why we can’t have more success to come. “I’m really just trying to prove that the coaches made the right decision. When my team plays like that it’s not hard for me to do.” Kurylo has also been making his mark on the team as he has earned six points in five games. “I’ve just been sticking to the system and the game plan [and] it’s been working out. I have been working hard and been rewarded for it. The Dynamiters are now on a four-game winning streak and sit tied on top of the Eddie Mountain Division with the Thunder Cats. “The toughest thing
about being a coach is not letting these guys get too high when they are up and not letting them get too low when they are down,” Stuart said. He is now preparing the team for a pair of upcoming home games this weekend against the Columbia Valley Rockies and the Nelson Leafs. MATCH STICKS: Connor Kendall (’98) has suffered a season-ending injury. Korbyn Chabot (’99) has signed with the Trail Smoke Eaters (BCHL). Forwards Nic Herringer (‘98) and Joe Karpyshyn (‘98) were added to the team. For up-to-date Kimberley Dynamiter information visit: www.kimberleydynamiters.net/ blog. Teddy Toss 2016
The Kootenay Ice held their 18th annual A&W Teddy Bear, Toque and Mitten Toss night on Saturday. 1,739 fans were in attendance to throw their stuffed animals and winter wear on the ice after defenceman Troy Murray scored the team’s first goal of the night early in the second period. The event’s main benefactor is the Salvation Army, with the items thrown on the rink donated to those in need this holiday season. This weekend, the Ice got a double dose of teddies and toques, as they were the visitors when the Spokane Chiefs held their event on Friday night, before coming home and doing it again in Cranbrook.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) What drops on your lap early on gets you going today. You might be surprised and delighted by another person’s gesture of goodwill. Your spontaneous reaction will please him or her. You’ll want to assess your current direction. Tonight: Hang out with a favorite friend. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Be aware of the impact that a money decision will have on you. Somehow, you feel more in control if you say little. A partner or associate would be delighted to receive your feedback. You’ll gain insight through a sudden event. Tonight: Try not to spend. Keep your wallet closed. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Your smile goes far in opening up a close friend who has been closed down. Others seem to act in ways you can’t predict. You might be tenser than you realize, especially as this Full Moon hits you harder than most people. Work with the moment. Tonight: Do your thing.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) Know when to vanish and not get involved with others. The Full Moon hits you in a spot where you are very vulnerable. Know what works for you and do just that, despite an older relative’s demands. Do your best. Tonight: If you’re tired, make it an early night. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Zero in on your priorities and know when you have had enough of someone’s flak. You might want to detach. As a result, you’ll come to a better understanding of the dynamic of a situation around you. There might not be any need to do anything about it. Tonight: Lie low. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Stay on top of calls and meetings. You might have a lot on your mind and a lot to digest. DEAR ANNIE by Annie Lane
A COMPANION FOR ALL TIME Dear Annie: Ten years ago, I was transferred to Chicago for work. I didn’t know anyone and found myself very lonely the first year. One winter night while I was out picking up Chinese takeout for dinner, I heard barking and saw a little black and white puppy under a tree. I looked around everywhere and saw no signs of an owner. He was very young, and it was very cold, so I took him home. I put up signs with his picture, saying I had found him. No one responded. I decided it was safe to “adopt” him. I named him Snoopy. Having the companionship of a dog really helped with my loneliness. I went out for walks and took him to the dog park on weekends. Snoopy even helped me meet my husband. You see, one Saturday afternoon at the dog park, Snoopy started playing with a huge black Labrador. The Lab’s owner came up to me, and we struck up a conversation. Long story short, we were married within three years. (We had our dogs walk down the aisle to give them credit for introducing us.) Fast-forward 10 years. Snoopy was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma. The vet gave him three months to live. My husband and I were devastated. I simply couldn’t imagine life without this dog. He had been such a wonderful companion to us. Two months after his diagnosis, he passed away. Since then, I have been so depressed. I am having trouble concentrating at work. This companion who was there through so much of my life is now gone. My husband is sad, too, but keeps trying to tell me to snap out of it. I am so sad; I can’t. How can I get over this loss? -- Grieving for Snoopy Dear Grieving: I am so sorry for your loss. I, too, am an animal lover and understand how much animals truly are members of the family. It sounds as if you gave Snoopy a great home. Take comfort in knowing that you gave him a wonderful life, the best life he could have asked for. Though you will never forget Snoopy, I promise that time will lessen the pain. He will always live on in your heart. I’ve always found comfort in a poem by Steve and Diane Bodofsky, “The Rainbow Bridge”: “By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill, is a lush, green meadow where time stands still. “Where the friends of man and woman do run, when their time on earth is over and done. “For here, between this world and the next, is a place where each beloved creature finds rest. “On this golden land, they wait and they play, till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day. “No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness, for here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness. “Their limbs are restored, their health renewed, their bodies have healed, with strength imbued. “They romp through the grass, without even a care, until one day they start, and sniff at the air. “All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back, then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack. “For just at that instant, their eyes have met; together again, both person and pet. “So they run to each other, these friends from long past, the time of their parting is over at last. “The sadness they felt while they were apart, has turned into joy once more in each heart. “They embrace with a love that will last forever, and then, side-by-side, they cross over... together.” Copyright 1998 Steve and Diane Bodofsky. Obituary for Annie Luella (Nesbitt) McDonald Come to the Silence And God said: Come to the Silence, Life is so loud, And your soul needs a break from the clock and the crowd. Come to the silence and let my love start To heal all life’s hurts and to comfort your heart. Come to the silence, be calm and be still, Just rest in my arms ~ for today, that’s my will. Come to the silence in search of my peace . Gently your doubts and your fears will all cease. Come to the silence‌ here take my hand. Have you forgotten that I understand? Annie Luella Nesbitt was born the first daughter, to Percy & Annie Nesbitt on March 14, 1917, in Blackstock, P.C., Durham, County, Ontario. She was joined by 7 brothers and 4 sisters. She married Floyd McDonald in 1940 and after working & living in mining communities in Northern Manitoba, moved to Kimberley in the mid-forties. She was employed for many years at the Rapido Laundry, Mary’s Kitchen and the laundry at the old hospital. She & Floyd lived on Rotary Drive where their home was her castle and her backyard, her world. It was home to many birds & Lue knew each of their ‘hellos’. Her biggest challenge was keeping peace between the birds and the squirrels that visited daily to take treats from her hands. She was the ‘supporting neighbour’ for all the children close by. After Floyd passed on and when she could no longer keep the grounds and home up to her standards, she moved into Garden View Lodge and enjoyed the facilities and friends she made there. Cominco Gardens was a close substitute for her former home. In July of this year Luella moved into the Pines and it was here that she passed away, loved by many, on December 5, 2016, 3 months short of celebrating her 100th birthday. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Floyd, many siblings & family members & friends. She will be loved and remembered by all who knew her. In keeping with her wishes, to make a quiet exit, there will be no service. Dear Lue, may you feel the gentle blessings of God’s Love, the soothing comfort of God’s peace and the reassuring warmth of knowing that others keep you close in thought.

Indigenous forest industry looks to Pacific Rim Tom Fletcher Black Press
NATORI CITY, JAPAN – If there is one certainty about the future of the B.C. forest industry, it is the growing participation of indigenous people whose traditional territories take in most of the Crown land in the province. Aboriginal leaders assumed responsibility for ecosystem-based harvesting in the Great Bear Rainforest agreement, mapping out protected areas with the B.C. government. And around the province, more than 100 forest harvest licences have been assigned to aboriginal communities as a step toward treaties. Now an aboriginal leader has joined the province’s annual forest industry trade mission to Asia, where cultural ties and business are intertwined by long tradition. Terry Teegee is a registered professional for-
ester, a member of the Takla Lake First Nation and tribal chief of the Carrier Sekani Tribal Council, representing eight reserve communities in the Prince George area. He spoke with Black Press as he toured a public library built with Canada Wood, B.C. and Canadian government sponsorship to replace one wiped out by the 2011 tsunami that devastated the east coast of Japan. “I’m here to assist the province in terms of promoting B.C. forest products, Canadian forest products, which we’re very much involved with because we hold tenures, we have companies,” Teegee said. “We do have ownership of mills. That’s what basically drives our economy too.” Carrier Sekani member communities run logging companies to supply fibre to local mills. Burns Lake Native Development Corp. is

bot went bankrupt in 2007, a new company called Conifex took over its sawmills at Fort St. James and later Mackenzie. Conifex CEO Ken Shields said the compa-
ny has unique relationships with aboriginal communities. When the company restarted the Fort St. James operation in 2008, the Nak’azdli, Tl’azt’en and Takla Lake First Nations were origi-
nal shareholders as well as employees. When the company took over the Mackenzie operations in 2010, it made commercial arrangements with the three communities in
the harvest area, Kwadacha, Tsay Keh Dene and the McLeod Lake Indian Band, which has its own logging and construction companies. Conifex buys roadbuilding timbers from the small mill at Kwadacha and sponsors education programs in Kwadacha and Tsay Keh Dene, both remote communities on Williston Lake. Conifex started up a 36-megawatt biomass power plant at its Mackenzie facilities last year. The company is shifting to process more balsam and spruce as the supply of lodgepole pine declines due to beetle impact, said Hans Thur, vice-president of sales and marketing. Japan is Conifex’s third largest market by volume and buys high-quality lumber, Thur said. Lower-grade pine is currently sold to Chinese buyers, with stiff competition from Russia where the ruble has been devalued.

Orphan cub from Canal Flats to be rehabilitated Eric Elliot t Columbia Valley Pioneer
An orphaned black bear cub is on its way up to the Northern Lights Wildlife Shelter in Smithers, B.C. after being reported to the
local Conservation Officer Service earlier this month. The 11-month old cub was first reported on November 6th and has been frequenting a private property in Canal
Flats since the initial report while being monitored to ensure the cub was showing up alone. After making that evaluation, conservation officers made the decision to safely live-trap the
cub on November 30th on the private property. Andrea Smillie, WildSafeBC community co-ordinator, said a truck or train likely killed the cub’s mother as the property in Canal Flats is
located near both the tracks and Highway 93/95. “The cub was likely without its mother for several weeks, fending for itself and doing quite well, however, it may not have hibernated and would eventually lose all food sources now that winter is here,” she told The Pioneer. “The cub seems healthy and was eating what the Conservation Officer Service gave to it while it kept overnight on November 30th.” Northern Lights volunteers drove the cub to Kamloops on December 1st, where a transport company met them to take the cub to Smithers. Ms. Smillie said they had assessed the animal and determined that it was not yet habituated to humans, meaning that it would be able to go through the rehabilitation process and survive. “A ‘habituated’ bear has lost its natural wariness of humans, and this often results when a bear accesses human (anthropogenic) food including garbage, bird feeders, barbecues, etc.,” she said. “In this circum-
Because this little orphaned bear found in Canal Flats displayed fear toward humans, it qualified for care at the Northern Lights Wildlife Shelter in Smithers B.C. (Pioneer) stance, where there is little known about the history of the cub, the CO (conservation officer) had to decide based on how comfortable the cub was around humans. This cub was scared, defensive and very uncomfortable around humans.” The assumption that the cub is around 11 months old is based on the fact that most bears are born in the month of January and it is too small to be two years old. Ms. Smillie said that bears typically breed in late June but do not become pregnant until the
fall depending on whether they have enough fat stores to have cubs and nurse them throughout the winter. If the mother does, she will likely give birth to one to five cubs in January and remain in the den until late April. According to the Northern Lights Wildlife Society, they have found that rehabbed bears do not return to human settings upon their release. If the rehabilitation process goes as planned, the hope is to release the cub back into the wildlife in the Canal Flats area in June 2017.
