Rob Neidermayer (left) and Scott Niedermayer took hammers in hand to destroy the ice sculpture of them created by Rusty Cox, ice sculptor and chef at the Heidout Brewhouse and Restaurant Sunday during the Hometown Hockey festival in downtown Cranbrook. The Niedermayers were among the featured NHL greats on hand for the Rogers Sportsnet event Saturday and Sunday, but the sculpture of them proved less durable in the above zero temperatures, and the brothers were invited to take it down with a bang, rather than see it melt away slowly. See Page 12 for Sports Editor Brad McLeod’s interview with the Niedermayers, and Page 11 for a special Hometown Hockey photo feature.

Pedestrian killed after being struck by truck on Gold Creek Road An early Sunday morning collision near Cranbrook claimed the life of a man. A press release from the Cranbrook RCMP said that Cranbrook Emergency Services were called to a motor vehicle accident in the Gold Creek area at approximately 2:50 am Sunday morning. Initial reports indicate that a pickup truck was travelling north on Gold Creek Road and struck a 28-year-old man walking along the roadway. Once on scene, it was determined that the victim died as a result of the collision. The incident continues to be investigated by Cranbrook RCMP and South East District Traffic Services. Anyone with further information about this investigation is urged to contact the Cranbrook RCMP (250489-3471) or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Local resident opposed to proposed composting facility near Cranbrook Tre vor Cr awley

A local resident is speaking out against a proposed composting facility adjacent to her family property outside of Cranbrook. Rhonda Elzinga is concerned about the impacts of a composting facility being proposed by Earthrite Industries, specifically to the groundwater issues, wildlife access and compost odour. The facility, which is going to a pubic hearing, currently requires a rezoning for the land use to allow for composting. The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 22, starting at 7 p.m. in the RDEK boardroom. The issue had previously gone through a public hearing,

however, the RDEK decided to rescind the third reading of the proposed rezoning bylaw in order to gather further information and bring it back to another public hearing. That information was obtained through a report by VAST Resource Solutions, which concluded there is no surface connectivity between the proposed area and any wetlands or surface water bodies. The report also says that groundwater is located well below the property and isn’t likely to reach the water table, however, it also noted that onsite wells could provide a potential pathway between contact water and groundwater.

on MacLean was sharing a drink with Wayne Gretzky after the Canada fell 2-0 to Russia in the quarterfinals of the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy.

Gretzky, who was executive director of Canada’s men’s hockey team, bemoaned the loss with the longtime Hockey Night in Canada broadcaster. ‘If we just had [Scott] Niedermayer, we’d have been fine,’ Gretzky had lamented. Unfortunately for the Canadians, Niedermayer wasn’t available for the Olympic tournament as he was recov-

ering from a knee injury. However, the following NHL season, he won the Stanley Cup with Anaheim, alongside his brother, Rob. Not a bad consolation prize. MacLean is chock-full of stories over a 30-year broadcasting career heading up Hockey Night in Canada, as he stopped in Cranbrook this past weekend with the Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour with co-host Tara Slone and local NHL alumni. In an interview with the Cranbrook Townsman, MacLean spoke about the common themes as the tour criss-crosses Canada with stops in large cities and NHL markets to small towns in rural regions.

Ron MacLean greets Hometown Hockey-goers in downtown Cranbrook, during the first intermission of Hockey Night In Canada’s broadcast, Saturday, Feb. 19.

MacLean’s career always circles back to hockey Continued from page 1 “There is a difference, because in the smaller communities, the NHL is not a firsthand experience, so I think there’s a great excitement when you bring Rob and Scott Niedermayer, Theoren Fleury, or Kirk McLean into town,” MacLean said. “People in Vancouver or the Lower Mainland, it’s exciting and you still have devout fans, but it’s not quite as exciting as it is when you take the show to Thompson, Manitoba, or Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. “But having said that, that’s honestly one of the things you really recognize really quickly on the tour is that we’re all rink rats and it doesn’t matter how big the population base is, the general admiration for anyone who is able to find their way to The Show [NHL] is there.” Cranbrook has a rich heritage of representation in the NHL through the Niedermayer brothers, Steve Yzerman, Brad Lukowich, Jon Klemm, the Spring family, Bob and Don Murdoch, Ryan Huska, Tom Renney. The list goes on. MacLean noted how the pathway to the NHL has changed over the years, pointing to the Yzerman family when they moved from Vancouver to Cranbrook. “Mike and Steve, the Yzerman boys, got to skate and that’s kind of the experience you find more…it was kind of the background to the NHL in the 60s, was kids from smaller towns who had exposure to the outdoor ice. Now, the socio-economics of the game have changed so dramatically and the hockey

academies are the ticket or the path to the NHL,” MacLean said. Without a doubt, the Niedermayer brothers are the most famous NHL alumni to hail from the Key City. Scott has won everything there is to win: Olympic gold medals, to Stanley Cups, a Wold Cup, World Championship, World Junior Championship and a Memorial Cup. He also piled up individual awards as the NHL’s top defenceman, playoff MVP and scholastic awards from his WHL days with the Kamloops Blazers. MacLean recalled watching Scott in action with the New Jersey Devils during the 1995 Stanley Cup finals — his first NHL championship — in Game 2 against the Detroit Red Wings. “Scott went end-to-end and scored the goal that really sealed the deal in that series to take control to win the second game for New Jersey and to stun the Detroit Red Wings, which won 62 games in the regular season that year,” MacLean said. “That typified Scott’s great way.” Both Niedermayer brothers enjoyed long careers in the NHL but they never played together. Until 2007. Scott had left the Devils as an unrestricted free agent in the 2006 offseason to join the Ducks, where Rob had been playing since 2003. After a lengthly run through the playoffs, the Ducks overcame the Ottawa Senators in a five game series as Rob captured his first NHL championship alongside his older brother.

“Of course, I remember Carol and the touching moment of when Scott passed the cuwp to Rob,” MacLean said. “I have great respect for Rob and what he did during the ’07 Cup, the best line on the Ducks was Travis Moen, Sammy Påhlsson and Rob. He was just a force making sure he was going to get that ring.”

“I was supposed to be the host. I remember when I started, CBC was really on me … ‘Ron, you are kind of the voice of the CBC, you are the one who has to reign Don in, we can’t have you being run roughshod. “And I was thinking to myself, ‘Why not?’” A western boy, MacLean grew up in Red Deer, Alberta, before getting into the local broadcasting scene. He joined Hockey Night in Canada in 1986 and has been covering the NHL ever since. When MacLean took over HNIC hosting duties, he also inherited a new parter for what’s become an institution on the broadcast. Enter Don Cherry and Coach’s Corner. Cherry, a former NHL player and coach, has become an icon of the show with his brash, outspoken demeanor and disregard for political correctness. Also the flamboyant suits. During the Coach’s Cor-

ner segment, Cherry usually provides some game analysis and breaks down a team or individual player’s habits with praise or ridicule, while MacLean tries to keep the conversation moving. “Don knows if the show is becoming pap,” said MacLean. “If we’ve been on the air and nothing’s going on, he will generate a little emotion. I think that’s a very engrained part of how he coached, how he played so he knows if the show needs a little sizzle and I often pay the price.” It’s a price MacLean pays willingly, even if the banter is at his expense. “I was raised with TV shows like Gilligan’s Island, Get Smart and Hogan’s Heroes, Archie Bunker … all the shows that I grew up with, the hero was really the fall guy and you kind of sacrificed yourself for the greater good and it was fun,” he said. “There was a real wink about the whole thing. That’s how I always felt. “I was supposed to be the host. I remember when I started, CBC was really on me … ‘Ron, you are kind of the voice of the CBC, you are the one who has to reign Don in, we can’t have you being run roughshod. “And I was thinking to myself, ‘Why not?’” MacLean and HNIC made the move from CBC over to Rogers when the company acquired the NHL broadcasting rights in 2013. He was briefly replaced by George Strombolopolous as the host of HNIC but remained with the Coach’s Corner segment. However, he returned to hosting du-

ties for the full program for the 2016/17 NHL season. Though MacLean’s name is synonymous with Canadian hockey broadcasting, he’s also been involved in other sports coverage, notably the 2008 Olympic Summer Games in Beijing, China. But when it comes to the highlights of his career, it always circles back to Canada’s game. His greatest thrill was broadcasting his first-ever Stanley Cup playoff game in 1987 between the St. Louis Blues and the Calgary Flames. “The puck was faced off right after I did my little opening monologue,” he said. “They dropped the puck and two Leaf defenders are smashed up against the glass under a ferocious forecheck by St. Louis and the crowd is going crazy and there’s blood on the glass and I thought, ‘Wow, this is the first minute of 60 days of commitment.’ He likened the playoffs, and the buildup to the Olympics for that matter, as creating conditions similar to that of symptoms for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for the players and the athletes. “I just can’t even imagine what your brain is like after having to go through it,” MacLean said. “I know with the Olympians, I just sit and watch and observe former players and former Olympians, and I think … Alex Despatie [a former Olympic diver] talked about how he would lock himself up in a room after the Olympics for anywhere from two to three weeks; he just couldn’t face society and that was the

night I recognized that and I was grateful for that. It gave me a different perspective on how I would do my job, I would be a lot more forgiving, I would be a lot more compassionate or empathetic.” The game itself has changed dramatically since he first started from the clutch-and-grab era to the salary cap to three-on-three overtime. The style of play has changed as well, as teams emphasize speed and skill while enforcers are going the way of the dinosaur. But the greatest change has been the salary cap, which was introduced a decade ago after a dispute between NHL franchise owners and the NHL Players’ Association caused a lockout that cancelled the entire 2005 season. MacLean says the cap has forced franchises to dole out large salaries to four or five star players while the rest of the roster jockeys for the leftover cap space. “I don’t think it’s killed the sport by any means but I feel a little bit badly that I wish the baseball model was in play where the rich teams could pay a tax and then players would actually cheer for each other when they got a raise,” MacLean said. “So that’s a little different dynamic in the room, but at core, it’s like everything else. All wisdom is knowing what to overlook and all these little changes keep everything fresh. “What makes hockey great will always make hockey great despite the changes that we bring into the game.”

Resident concerned about proposed composting facility Continued from page 1 The report recommends that the facility should be constructed on an impervious pad graded away from the well towards a catchment basin. “The results of the impact assessment reiterate our knowledge that our facility will operate in an environmentally sound manner,” stated Kris Pickering, the owner of Earthrite Industries. “It will not have the negative impact to the area that residents expressed in the last public hearing. We are hopeful that the board of directors will have the assurance they are looking for and will continue to see the value in the project, as they did upon presentation of the project.” Elzinga, who lives on 57 acres of land just north of the proposed composting facility, says neighbours are against the proposal and that it was unanimously opposed at a Area Planning Committee (APC) meeting. While the report says that steps can be taken to eliminate the smell that comes from composting, Elzinga doesn’t buy it. She points to other composting facilities designed by Earth-

rite Industries’ consultant on Vancouver — Saanich and Ladysmith — and the Lower Mainland that received complaints from neighbouring residents after they were built. “Once we’re stuck there … we can’t sell because who is going to buy?” Elzinga said. “Quality of life, [we have] stunning views of the Steeples, we sit on our decks and have our coffee, I train horses outside; I’m outside all day long everyday, so I can’t run in the house and hide from the stench.” Elzinga is concerned that the composting material could get into the groundwater and even though the facility will be build on impervious concrete, she points to Cranbrook streets and says winter frost heave could damage the concrete surfaces. She is also concerned about the impact to local wildlife; she says the area is habitat for badgers, which are considered endangered by the B.C. government, and that there are dens on her property. Following the public hearing on Wednesday evening, the issue will go back to the RDEK board in March.

After recent review, convicted child kidnapper and repeat sex offender, Randall Hopley will remain in jail past his statutory release date that was scheduled for March 19, 2017. Statutory release occurs at the two-thirds point in a sentence, and it is at this point that the vast majority of offenders are released to serve the remainder of their sentence under supervision in the community. According to the Parole Board of Canada, it is relatively rare for an offender to be detained past his statutory release date. Approximately three to four per cent of all offenders serving sentences of a fixed duration are detained in this way. Hopley is currently serving four years, 11 months and 14 days for Abduction of a Person under the age of 14, Break and Enter with Intent, Break and Enter and Commit and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000. Randall Hopley is led into Cranbrook courthouse on Friday, Nov. 29, 2013 for his sentencing over the Kienan Hebert abduction. of a three-year-old boy, and abducted the sleeping child from his bed. He then took the child across the Alberta border and kept him in a secluded location at a bible camp for four days until returning him to his family home during the night. Both the child and his family were deemed to have incurred serious harm based on emotional and psychological distress. At the time there was speculation by locals, who were concerned the police ‘jumped the gun’ by hauling Hopley away so quickly, without exploring other options or suspects. Even the victim’s father felt sorry for the man, who thought Hopley might not get the treatment he needs, while incarcerated. During a detention review last November, it was noted, Randall Hopley showed no remorse for his actions. “You lack insight into your criminal offending and your risk factors,” read the detention order by the Parole Board of Canada on November 21, 2016. “You have been diagnosed as a paedophile with no mental illness or medical issues.”

“You continue to blame others for your offending and have not accepted responsibility for you behaviour,” it later read. “You are assessed as high risk for sexual recidivism.” Hopley’s criminal background began in 1985, and included sexual offending against children, abduction, assault and property offences. In 1985 he was convicted of Sexual Assault against a five-year-old boy and was sentenced to two years, three months probation. In 1998, Hopley was charged with Invitation to Sexual Touching against a victim he was babysitting. This charge resulted in a stay of proceedings. In 2007, Hopley attempted to abduct a 10-year-old special needs boy from his home. He fled after the victim screamed. In 2008, Hopley was convicted of assault against an adult female. “Given the above circumstances and considering your history of sexual violence against children, the Board is satisfied that, if released, you are likely to commit an offence causing serious harm to another person prior to your warrant expiry date. Accordingly, your detention is ordered,” read the detention order of November 21, 2016. Hopley’s detention order will be reviewed next year in either January or February of 2018. At that time, the Board will either confirm the detention order, which will keep him in prison until the end of his sentence, or if sufficient evidence comes in between now and then, the Board may cancel the detention order and release him on statutory release. Hopley’s prison portion of his sentence ends on November 12, 2018. It is at this point that his Long Term Supervision Order (LTSO) of ten years, begins.

The JulyFest Committee, made up primarily of board members of the Kimberley Chamber of Commerce, has some big changes in mind for JulyFest 2017,

the primary one being location. Bocce and JulyFest central are moving to Centennial Park, at least for this year. As many Kimberley residents are aware, with the con-

was during the early summer of 1856 when two engineers for the South Eastern Railway Company removed a piece of track off the Beult River bridge (Staplehurst, Kent) for repair. The engineers then placed a red flag on the tracks 500 yards from the bridge, so any oncoming trains would know to switch tracks. Unfortunately the red flag needed to be 1,000 yards away, and on the afternoon of June 9 a passenger train slammed into the gap, derailing all its carriages except one, killing 10 and injuring 40. Far more deaths would have occurred had one passenger (safe in the carriage that remained in tact) not kicked out his window and clambered down the bridge supports to help his fellow passengers. After hauling numerous people out of the river, he gave those in shock sips out of brandy out of his flask, and water out of his hat which he dipped into the river. Rescue crews finally appeared, putting all survivors on an emergency train to a hospital in London. Yet before it arrived, the man who had risked his own life to try and save others quietly departed into the night, avoiding any public notice or police inquest. This was extremely odd behaviour, as Charles Dickens was usually a major publicity hound. It was the author of ‘Great Expectations,’ ‘David Copperfield,’ ‘Oliver Twist,’ and ‘A Christmas Carol’ who disregarded his own safety that day to try and help others. The event deeply traumatized him (it was later

mond or Centennial. The Committee has chosen Centennial because there is available infrastructure, water and electricity.” Centennial Park has been under discussion ever since the inevitability of a move came up. The chief problem was that it was some distance from the Civic Centre, and organizers worried about moving people from the bocce pits to the arena for the Saturday night dance. Traditionally, the bocce pits close at 9 p.m. on the Saturday and Festers move to the arena for the evening. However, this year there is no indoor concert.

“We’re not doing the indoor concert this year because of the repairs to the north wall of the Civic Centre,” Guarnery said. “We don’t know when the north wall will be done and we didn’t want any issues with booking a band and then not having a venue. So we’re going to keep everything outdoors this year. That’s not to say we won’t have a concert again, but we’re going to test it this year, to see how it works. “We’re still going to have two days of live music. There will be more room for the stage and dancing without encroaching on the bocce.” This also means

Reversing the route would make it all uphill, too much for those walking the parade. The JulyFest committee is open to any and all ideas on how to make this the best Fest ever. Charles Dickens and Ellen Turnan learned that more than one person had died in arms that day), and not only was he was unable to speak for two weeks, but remained terrified of trains for the rest of his life. Dickens, however, was travelling that day not with his wife, but with his 18-year-old mistress — Ellen Turnan. Easily the most famous person in England at the time, Dickens had indeed concealed his affair from the press during this time, maintaining the charade that he was still in love with his wife Catherine, who had borne him ten children. The charade was only in his head however, as most of England felt Dickens was having an affair with his wife’s sister Georgina. This was only after they thought something untoward was going on with his wife’s other sister Mary, who passed away suddenly of heart complications when she was only 17. Dickens slipped a ring off of the deceased Mary’s finger, wearing it for the rest of his life while car-

rying a lock of her hair with him at all times. He openly expressed he wished death had taken someone else (his wife?), and that he wished to be buried with young Mary. Although he was successful at concealing that he was with his mistress during the train disaster, there was no way he could hide that fact that he had helped so many people. Everyone had recognized him. He was awarded a special plate by the South Eastern Railway for his acts of bravery, and he wrote about the event in the postscript to his novel ‘Our Mutual Friend’: On Friday the Ninth of June in the present year, Mr and Mrs Boffin (in their manuscript dress of receiving Mr and Mrs Lammle at breakfast) were on the South Eastern Railway with me, in a terribly destructive accident. When I had done what I could to help others, I climbed back into my carriage — nearly turned over a viaduct, and caught aslant upon

the turn — to extricate the worthy couple. They were much soiled, but otherwise unhurt. Having not mentioned Ellen Turnan at all, he goes on to say how close he had come to be killed as well: I remember with devout thankfulness that I can never be much nearer parting company with my readers for ever, than I was then, until there shall be written against my life, the two words with which I have this day closed this book: — THE END. Dickens was not the last to write about the Staplehurst Train disaster. It appears in R. F. Delderfield’s 1970 novel ‘God is an Englishman,’ and again in Dan Simmons’ 2009 novel ‘Drood.’ Dickens himself died in 1870, exactly five years to the day of the train crash. The (Very) Slow Death of Islamic State

“U

nfortunately, it is unrealistic to expect zero civilian casualties in armed conflict,” said US Army Col. John L. Dorrian, the spokesperson of Combined Joint Task Force — Operation Inherent Resolve. (Where do they get these ridiculous code-names?) The CJTF/OIR is the US-led international force that was created to defeat Islamic State, but Dorrian was talking in particular about the city of Mosul in northern Iraq, captured by the forces of Islamic State more than two years ago. There are still at least 650,000 civilians in the IS-controlled part of Mosul, and when the Iraqi army retakes it a lot of them will be killed or injured. Col. Dorrian was just trying to “manage expectations”, as they say, but he needn’t have worried. As many civilians will probably be killed during the reconquest of Mosul as died in the Syrian army’s reconquest of eastern Aleppo in December, but it won’t get as much media attention — mainly because Islamic State is not as subtle as the Nusra Front, the rival Islamist organisation that dominated eastern Aleppo. The Nusra Front, now rebranded as Jabhat Fatah al-Sham (Conquest of Syria Front) to disguise its allegiance to al-Qaeda, was clever enough to let little girls blog about the horrors of the siege of Aleppo, and the Western media obligingly ran it all without question. It was a holocaust, they reported, committed by the evil army of that wicked Bashar al-Assad. The Western media won’t be saying that sort of thing about the inevitable deaths of innocent civilians during the re-

taking of Mosul, because the West supports the Iraqi army. In any case, Islamic State is probably too rigid to allow that kind of blog. The Iraqi army’s attempt to take the city of Mosul back from Islamic State has already lasted almost as long as the siege of Stalingrad. So far, it has only managed to clear the suburbs on the east bank of the Tigris river, and civilian deaths have only been in the hundreds. This week it began its assault on the main part of the city, which lies on the west bank. It may fight its Gwynne way in to the core of the old city in another month or Dyer two, but street-fighting eats up armies, and the streets of the old city are narrow and twisting. The casualties will be high among both soldiers and civilians, and it is unlikely that the operation will end until April or May. It may not even end in a decisive victory for the goverment forces. There are around 100,000 men in the force besieging Mosul, but most of them are Kurdish militia and “Popular Mobilisation Units” of the Iraqi Army that must not be allowed to enter the city proper. They are either the wrong ethnicity (Kurds) or the wrong religion (Shias) to send into an Arab and Sunni city. What’s left is the Iraqi regular army, probably no more than 30-40,000 strong around Mosul, and in particular the elite units of the Counter Terrorism Service who have borne the brunt of the fighting. Some of the CTS units have already suffered 50 percent casualties (killed and wounded), and overall Iraqi casualties are at least 5,000 before the final battle has even begun.

Let us be optimistic and assume that Mosul will ultimately fall. That would put an end to the Iraqi half of what used to be called Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), but what happens to the Syrian part of Islamic State is still very much up in the air. It was losing territory to the Syrian Kurds, whose army was advancing steadily on the IS capital at Raqqa in eastern Syria. The Syrian Kurds have done so well because they had US air support on call at all times. Indeed, the Kurds were America’s main ally in the Syrian civil war, and the only major ground force (apart from the Syrian army) that was actively fighting Islamic State. But now all that is at risk because Turkey, which has been the main support of the Syrian rebels for years, has switched sides. It sees a semi-independent Kurdish state in northern Syria as a bigger threat to its territorial integrity than either IS or the Assad regime in Damascus. And it appears to have made a deal with Russia that will give it a free hand to destroy the Syrian Kurds. It is not clear whether the Turkish army can actually do that without taking very large casualties, but it’s probably going to try. This means that the United States will have to choose between its ally of the past four years, the Syrian Kurdish army, and its faithless NATO ally, Turkey. It will probably choose Turkey, because it is more important, and abandon the Kurds to their fate. The Kurds are used to being betrayed, so they won’t even be surprised. But it does mean that destroying Islamic State in Syria will have to wait for a while. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist published in 45 countries.

Opinion/Events Letters to the Editor

No wildlife management at all

I believe that the title of Barry Vandaelle’s excellent letter to the editor on 2017.02.15 (Wildlife Management) was mislabelled. I say this because I don’t believe that we currently have wildlife management. To have management of anything, proper data is needed. In the case of wildlife, there is a need for feet on the ground and eyes from the air on a consistent basis before decisions are made. Do our managers have the resources and a complete lack of political interference to make sound decisions on all wildlife species? Likely not; when they continue to allow general open seasons on cow and calf elk, and doe and fawn whitetail deer. Decisions like these defy logic to me. Who is it in government or otherwise that continues to condone and sanction the senseless slaughter of these species through liberalized hunting seasons. I won’t get into the issues with caribou, moose, sheep, predators and the list goes on. I believe that when a government really drops the ball, they have a third party act as a buffer for their incompetence; locally, highway maintenance comes to mind. Many citizens in the East Kootenay (and province-wide) have concerns regarding our wildlife mismanagement and I can’t help but wonder how the government will try to wiggle out of their responsibilities/accountabilities on this one — i.e.; will they pass the responsibility on to a third party? Furthermore, is it just a coincidence that in the year of an election that they see the need for more park rangers, and additional funding for caribou, just to mention two — hmm! I don’t think that Barry and I are the only ones losing sleep over the steady decline of our wildlife; the testament to that may be discovered on March 11 at the Heritage Inn in Cranbrook from 1 pm to 3 pm. At that time a Wildlife Management Roundtable is going to take place as a collaboration of conservation groups will hopefully be aligning their common interests to make wildlife management a priority in British Columbia which it is obviously anything but, at present. It will be interesting to see what common concerns are raised by Environmental Groups (represented by Wildsight), the First Nations, and Hunting and Fishing Groups (Back Country Hunters and Anglers, East Kootenay Wildlife Association, Southern Guides and the Elk Valley Rod & Gun Clubs). In addition, I am told that declared candidates for the upcoming provincial election in both the Kootenay East and Columbia-River Revelstoke ridings will have an opportunity to provide their perspectives. The focus of the round table will be to present and focus on the issues at hand but not to provide the solutions at this time. It is expected that because of the emotional sensitivity of the subject itself, that there will be a large media presence at the event.

Let’s hope so, and that the roundtable here can act as a template for concerned citizens in other regions of the province. I am certain that we are not alone on this issue. I sincerely hope that there is a large turn-out of the general public to demonstrate how concerned really are — we hunters and non-hunters alike — and at the end of the day, our fast diminishing wildlife resources can benefit from the important and relevant issues raised by the various groups. I look forward to the day that the East Kootenay can again be called the Serengeti Plains of North America. I hope to see you at the Round Table. Wayne Pelter Kimberley

Carbon tax needed more than ever

Re: Voter’s Guide to Carbon Taxes (B.C. Views, Feb. 8). At a time when addressing climate change is at its most urgent, Tom Fletcher implies that human-caused climate change is “propaganda.” His views fly in the face of the overwhelming scientific consensus, as well as many globally esteemed organizations, such as the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank. We are at a time in history that if we don’t rapidly reduce our carbon emissions, we are committing our children and grandchildren to a world with ever more extreme forest fires, drought, severe weather, sea level rise and ocean acidification. A refugee crisis of an extent never seen before will happen at a time when our world population peaks. The economic costs will be staggering. Top economists from around the world tell us that a steadily rising price on carbon emissions is the most effective and least expensive way to reduce our emissions and decarbonize our economy. It isn’t only progressives and “elites” who favour a predictable and rising carbon price. Last week a group of Republican elder statesmen presented a proposal to the White House – The ConTIL END APRIL - STOP FOR servative Case for Carbon Dividends –RUN calling forOF a steadily rising, SUMMER - THEN RESTART to SEPT.6TH revenue-neutral carbon tax with the proceeds returned houseCantabelles, an all-female singing group, holds. A little bit of heaven in the CCF

ay and I were perched on the very top of Windy Bluff above the long lake in the community forest and we were telling lies. Well! I’m sure he was stretching the truth a little whereas, as always, I was relating the absolute truth. It was a fine spring day although the lake was still frozen and according to Ray, so was Kettle Lake. He’d come up that way while I had puffed directed up from the Fence line Trail. Ray reckoned that the very idea of the Community Forest was a piece of brilliance and I had to agree although I did recall grumbling at first about the inconvenience of all the regulations. I’ve been around long enough to recall the days when we could drive right in and get stuck anywhere we chose, especially if we were daft enough to see if we could get right through an alkali. I was fortunate enough not to suffer the indignity of a full scale rescue although I was involved in a couple, like when my friends from the coast ventured a little too far. I remember how Elizabeth became bedaubed in stinking mud. Ray and I wandered over to look at the hills behind Windy Bluff , remarking that it was a little bit of heaven and we reminisced. Ray reckoned he’d been up that way some time back and I told him that I

was familiar with the country; I’d been lost there at least once. Anyway, Ray and I swapped lies for a while up there on the windy top until I suggested that he join me and come down the way I had ascended, but he demurred. “I’ve got to rescue the old lady,” he said. “Bett’s still stuck way down on the trail, messing about with her stupid little dog.” So we parted. I’d been surprised that my erstwhile companion had abandoned his spouse just like that but he’d explained, “She knows her way around. She’s a buddy Peter of one of the women who Warland sponsored the Community Forest, way back.” So we bade each other good luck and parted ways. I went straight down, trotted over the frozen surface of the big lake without breaking through and attained the road. It was here that I encountered a woman with a small dog. Well, I didn’t know that she had a dog with her; there wasn’t one in sight as we approached one another but her bosom was impressive. She was wearing clothes that looked too good to be worn thrashing about in the bush; more like a going-tochurch ensemble with that ample bosom lurking beneath. Casting about for any sign

of the dog I greeted her and asked if she were, by any chance, called Bett and she assured me that her name was Bethany.”I object to being called Bett. It sounds so cheap.” I kept going. “I met your husband on the top,” I said, waving an arm airly in the direction of Windy Bluff. “He should be down soon.” “I am going to divorce him,” announced the Lady called Bethany and opened her coat to liberate a sort of dog which trotted over and urinated on my boot. The scrawny animal was about the size of a pound of pork stuffing with hair on it that looked like mildew. I ignored the divorce statement and asked, “Where is your transport? Where do you intend to meet Ray?” The lady looked vaguely around her. I thought ‘this is the woman who is a friend of the people that sponsored the community forest in the old days,’ and had the feeling that I was going to get involved in a rescue. “He’s called Raymond,” said the lady, “And we’re getting divorced. The way he treats poor Horatio here.” And she scooped up the mangy dog and thrust him back into her coat for safety. Then Ray appeared over the horizon and asked his wife, who was about to divorce him ‘where the hell she’d got too?’ I guess all marriages are not made in heaven. Some can end there.

3,000 jobs over the next five years in rural communities around the province. The funds go to the Forest Enhancement Society of B.C., set up a year ago to restore damaged forests, reduce forest fire risk and increase forest carbon capture. Much of the society’s work so far has been forest fuel removal operations in interface areas around communities. Among the largest projects so far are in the Slocan Valley, the Gold Creek area near Cranbrook and near Williams Lake, where helicopter logging is removing beetle-killed Douglas fir from steep slopes around the community. On the South Coast, an interface fuel removal project is underway near Whistler. Jim Snetsinger, who was B.C.’s chief forester during the peak years of the mountain pine beetle outbreak in the B.C. Interior, is now vicechair of the Forest Enhancement Society. He said in an interview the new fund will enable the society to extend be-

Rogers Sportsnet’s Hometown Hockey, a celebration of hockey and small town Canadian culture arrived in Cranbrook for a weekend festival that packed the downtown core. Baker Street was closed off between 8th Avenue and 10th Avenue, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 18 and 19, so the crowds could check out a wide variety of fun hockey-related activities, music by some great local bands, and encounters with NHL greats like Theo Fleury, the Niedermayer Brothers and Kirk MacLean. Sunday’s events featured a live broadcast from an on-site studio featuring Ron MacLean and Tara Slone. Photos by Barry Coulter, Brad McLeod, Trevor Crawley

“E

v e r y hockey player’s dream starts on a frozen pond in a small town — I was no different growing up here.” Rob Niedermayer can’t help but smile as he thinks about his humble upbringing in the Kootenays. “After school, I can remember my buddies and I would go shovel the snow off the pond and scrimmage, pretending we were some NHL stars until dark,” the retired NHL player recalls while sitting in the Sportsnet mobile studio on Baker Street on Saturday afternoon. “We’d do that day after day.” Rob is visiting downtown Cranbrook for Rogers Hometown hockey, a weekly celebration of community hockey hosted by Ron MacLean and Tara Slone. Although he still lives in the area, the event is a special opportunity for him to return to the spotlight and show off his city. “When I heard that Hometown Hockey was coming to Cranbrook, I was really excited,” Rob says. “Cranbrook is a great hockey town [and] it’s nice to share it with Canada.” His older brother Scott — one of the most accomplished defenceman in Canadian hockey history — is in the corner, having just given his little bro a hard time about his greying hair. “Brush off some of that snow, Rob.” Although, together, the brothers have accomplished amazing feats while playing professional hockey across the world, back in Cranbrook, they’re just a couple of kids. “I was tremendously fortunate to grow up here, being able to ski in the morning and play hockey at night,” Scott says. “ To go on to play in the NHL and have some success and play for Team Canada as well, I’m pretty sure I wasn’t dreaming that much when I was a kid that this was all going to happen.”

BRAD MCLEOD PHOTO

Rob and Scott Niedermayer are interviewed by Rogers Hometown Hockey host Tara Slone during the afternoon of January 18 in downtown Cranbrook. ‘Some success in the NHL’ is a major understatement. As part of their 100 anniversary, the league recently named an official 100 greatest players list and Scott made the cut right alongside Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe. Through 17 seasons with the New Jersey Devils and Anaheim Ducks, the elder Niedermayer won an unbelievable four Stanley Cups, a Conn Smythe Trophy, and a Norris. Playing for Canada internationally, Scott won two Olympic gold medals, a World Championship, a World Junior Championship, and a World Cup. For his part, Rob staked out an impressive career putting up over 450 points in almost 1,200 NHL games while playing for five different teams and teaming up with Scott to win the Stanley Cup in 2007 with the Ducks. The tremendous success is something the boys say they owe to the community they grew up in.

“There were a lot of people that helped me along the way [in Cranbrook],” Scott says. “[We] had some good support here growing up in youth hockey, the coaches we had, and our parents did a lot as well. It’s amazing to just sit here and look back at everything and how it’s all played out. I’m very lucky.” Although they may have pretended to be NHL players while whizzing around the lake at the Ramparts, it was the local teams that had them in awe when they were growing up. “It was a big deal to go down to the Memorial Arena and watch the Cranbrook Colts play Junior B or the Cranbrook Royals Senior Men’s team,” Scott says. “We were excited [at] seven or eight years old to go down to the rink to watch these guys play. “To us, they were the best in the world — in our world anyway — and a lot of those guys from the Royals were our coaches when we

were kids. We benefited from that for sure.”

“It was a big deal to go down to the Memorial Arena and watch the Cranbrook Colts play Junior B or the Cranbrook Royals Senior Men’s team. To us, they were the best in the world.” Scott Niedermayer As a part of giving back to the town, the brothers served as minority owners of the WHL’s Kootenay Ice from their inception in 1998 until last year when they sold their shares to the Chynoweth family With the team for sale and fear of relocation at a paramount in the community, the Niedermayers say they are hopeful the Ice can stay in the Key City. “[We] have deep feelings to keep [the Ice] here in Cranbrook,” Rob

says. “It’s done remarkably well here for a long time here [and] we’ve had some great teams. It’s just an exciting brand of hockey to watch. To have that calibre of hockey in Cranbrook, we’re very lucky. So, it’s something that we feel strongly should stay in Cranbrook and hopefully it does.” Scott echoes those sentiments but adds that he understands the reality of the situation. “I think people enjoy having the team here [but] at the same time, Cranbrook is a smaller town and it is a business as well,” he says. “If they’re unable to support the team, business decisions will get made, unfortunately, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed that things will work out here and that we will find answers to keep the team here.” Without a stake in the team anymore, however, the Niedermayers are mostly focused on their families. “My biggest passion [now that I’m retired

from hockey] is watching my kids grow up,” says Rob who moved back to the East Kootenays after his career ended in 2012. “When you’re playing, you’re away a lot and it takes a lot of time away from that. “Now, I have a great chance of spending time with them and just seeing them and taking them to gymnastics or coaching them in soccer. I’ve really loved that. It’s been a lot of fun to see them grow.” Scott, who is raising his four boys in Anaheim, is also now, for the most part, also a stay-at-home dad. “My biggest passion is just getting my kids to where they have to go, I’m always psyched when I get them there on time,” Scott laughs. “Doing all the stuff [with the kids] is a lot right now. I help coach their [hockey] teams and I enjoy doing that and watching them have fun.” Both men relish in the opportunity to get

their kids out onto a Cranbrook pond, as they enjoyed so much when they were youngsters. Rob has a little pond at his place that serves as a great family rink. “I’ve been going out with my three daughters and that’s where we’ve been trying to teach them how to skate,” Rob says. “They haven’t really taken up hockey too much, but they’re just learning how to skate and it brings back a lot of great memories.” While Scott lives in California and can’t relive his childhood as much as he might want to, his family has come up to Rob’s place during the last three Christmases. “[Coming from] southern California, it’s a really special thing for them to be able to do,” he says. “We actually just got back from Quebec City [as well], where one of my boys was in the Peewee tournament last week and we brought the whole team out a few times to skate outside and obviously kids from California get a huge kick out of being able to do that. “I have great memories of doing that around town here on the different ponds and lakes that we went out on with family and friends [and it’s great to share that].” During Sunday night’s broadcast of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes game — the centrepiece of the Hometown Hockey weekend — Scott and Rob had the chance to tell their Cranbrook stories to the entire country during the first intermission. While their crowning moment may have happened on a rink in Anaheim when the Ducks won the Stanley Cup and captain Scott passed the trophy to Rob, the boys’ hearts are still in Cranbrook. “I’ve always said that [Cranbrook] is one of the best-kept secrets around,” Rob says. “It’s such a beautiful spot [and] it’s produced so many good sports people. We love it here and hopefully, it will continue to get the notoriety it deserves.”

Ice crowd tickled pink in big home weekend Kootenay draws biggest crowds of the year in ‘Pink the Rink’ and ‘Jersey Off the Back Night’ as team puts up solid performances BR AD MCLEOD

Paint the town pink. A season-high, 2,690 fans were at Western Financial Place on Friday night and were treated to an action-packed 3-2 Kootenay Ice overtime victory over the Saskatoon Blades. Hosting their annual ‘Pink the Rink’ night, the game brought in school kids from all over Cranbrook, proudly decked out in pink to show their support for anti-bullying. In addition to the team helping raise money for anti-bullying initiatives through the event, the players gave back to the city with one of their best efforts of the year. “It [felt] awesome,” said Vince Loschiavo, who scored the game’s winning goal. “The crowd was into it all game and there was a lot of people here [to] cheer us on [so] it was great to get the win for them.” Despite the eventual win, the Ice didn’t get off to a great start on Friday and were trailing the Blades after only 15 seconds. Markson Bechtold tapped in a pass from Jesse Shynkaruk to beat Ice goalie Jakob Walter right off the bat and put

an immediate damper on the raucous crowd. The Ice didn’t quit though. They amped up their physical play and were rewarded when Brett Davis jammed a puck in tight past Blades netminder Logan Flodell to even the score.

“The energy in the building was unbelievable. Having so many people come out and support [us] makes you want to come out and play harder every day.” Jake Elmer “Obviously, the start wasn’t what we wanted, but we settled in after,” said head coach Luke Pierce on the victory. “It was nice to claw back and then finally win one in overtime.” In the second period, despite three power plays and an abundance of chances for the home Kootenay squad, the game stayed deadlocked at 1-1. Although Mason McCarty gave the Blades a lead with a goal five minutes into the third

period, beating Walter high on a rush, the Ice once again kept their composure. With less than six minutes to go in the game, Keenan Taphorn found Noah Philp and beat Flodell for a huge tying goal. The game was Philp’s first since sustaining an upper-body injury in Kootenay’s last win on January 27. According to Pierce, his return was a big factor in the team’s success. “It helped our depth, especially down the middle,” he said on Philp’s return. “We’ve been going a lot of nights with a couple of 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old playing the middle and [Philp], having that extra year of experience, it helps. “I was a bit concerned that he might be a little tentative, just coming off the type of injury that he had, but I thought he was great.” With the game all knotted up, an overtime period was necessary. In 13 prior games decided in extra-time, Kootenay had just one OT win with eight OT losses, as well as two shootout wins and two shootout losses. With the strong backing of their crowd, the

BRAD MCLEOD

Brett Davis (#22, left) celebrates his first period goal against the Saskatoon Blades on Friday night. Ice added another positive tally to that total. After just over two minutes of fast end-to-end action, Vince Loschiavo ended the game with a great deke in close. Despite scoring the game-winner, Loschiavo credited the win to a great team performance. “All four lines were going and everyone did their job and their part for the win,” he said. “That’s what we needed.”

The game’s other hero, Philp, was also quick to praise his teammates. “It felt good [to be back] and I thought the boys had a lot of energy,” he said, at the end of the night. “Especially with Kroeker being sick on Wednesday and coming back too. He’s a big part of our lineup, so I thought the two of us coming back was a good spark.” On Saturday, the Ice

played in front of another large, excited crowd. With Rogers Hometown Hockey sweeping the city, 2,424 fans saw the Ice put in a good effort, but ultimately lose 4-1 to the Victoria Royals. Despite the loss, the team was thrilled by the crowd’s enthusiasm and thought, for the most part, that they delivered a good performance. “The energy in the building was unbeliev-

able, having so many come out and support the game makes you want to come out and play harder every day,” said Jake Elmer, who scored the Ice’s lone goal. “[Our] guys were battling all night, hitting and getting pucks on the net, which is what we needed.” The Ice have a week of practice before playing their next game on Friday in Red Deer against the Rebels.

Kimberley Dynamiters win fifth in a row to end regular season The Kimberley Dynamiters finished the 2016-17 season on a high note, clipping the Beaver Valley Nitehawks 6-3. In early January, the Nitehawks embarrassed the Dynamiters 9-2 at the Cranbrook Memorial Arena. The Dynamiters players took it upon themselves to recall that memory and bring it to the forefront to show the Nitehawks who the Nitros truly are. “We’ve got to show them that we are coming for them,” forward Brandt Bertoia said prior to the game. “We

need to show them that [the 9-2 loss] wasn’t us, they don’t know the real us.” The Nitros got on the board early, with Devon Langelaar scoring his seventh of the season prior to the three-minute mark. The Dynamiters then dialed it up, with two more goals scored by James Farmer and Brandon Langridge. “We came out strong [and] our guys were ready to play,” head coach and general manager Derek Stuart said of leaving the fans at the Fruitvale Arena shocked in the first intermission. In the second, the Dynamiters kept pouring it on. Brandt Bertoia

gave the Nitros a commanding 4-0 lead but the ever dangerous Nitehawks clawed their way back into the game with three power play goals.

“We came out strong [but] I’m a big believer that the playoffs are a brandnew season, anything that happens in the regular season is out the window now.” Derek Stuart Franco Colapaolo then scored to keep the

Nitehawks at bay, as Kimberley ended the middle period with a 5-3 lead. In the last frame, Bertoia scored his second of the game to secure a 6-3 win over the league-leading Nitehawks. It was only Beaver Valley’s fifth loss of the season and ended their 16-game winning streak. Cody Campbell turned aside 34 of 37 shots for his 14th win of the season. “We are really happy with how we are getting offensive contributions from a lot of different places,” Stuart said. “When you are resting players, it is comforting to know that you can get contributions from

other guys. It’s really a well-balanced attack that we have going right now. “The players did a great job of utilizing our team speed [against Beaver Valley] in all areas of the game.” The Dynamiters now enter the playoffs hot, winning their past five in a row. “We have confidence right now, going into Friday I assume our players will be ready to go,” Stuart said. “I’m a big believer that the playoffs are a brandnew season, anything that happens in the regular season is out the window now.” The Dynamiters get ready to battle the Fernie Ghostriders, their

arch-rivals, with game one going on Friday at the Kimberley Civic Centre at 7 p.m. ... For up-to-date Kim-

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You naturally take the lead. At this point in time, your attention might be on public or professional matters. A loved one will go out of his or her way to pave the path for you. You don’t need this person’s help, but it is always nice to feel supported. Tonight: Out late. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Keep reaching out to someone you care about. You could be too energetic for your own good. You might want to find out how a friend or an associate feels about a certain issue. You enjoy getting together with this person. What is stopping you now? Tonight: Pace yourself. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) One-on-one relating remains important in fulfilling a longterm goal or desire. You could be on top of the world because of feedback you get from a loved one or a respected friend. Listen to this person’s ideas; your creativity will surge as a result. Tonight: Ever playful.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Defer to others gracefully. You have your reasons for choosing to continue as you have been. Add more fun and caring to your life. Working all the time isn’t the best solution for you, as you’re someone who really enjoys family time. Tonight: Go along with a suggestion. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Pace yourself, as you will want to be everywhere all at once. Use some self-discipline, and you will love the results. You see a situation in a different light from many of those around you. As a result, communication is likely to flourish. Tonight: Hang out with a close friend. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Your imagination takes a comment and runs with it. You might be overspending or just having too good of a time to slow down right now. Know that there are always ramifications, no matter what choices you make in life; you need to accept them. Tonight: See what happens. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You might want to slow down

a bit. Maintaining such a hectic pace could be putting too much pressure on you. Open up to a conversation that you have been avoiding. Though the topic is very personal, you could be unusually pleased by what comes out of it. Tonight: Stay centered. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You’ll use your vocabulary with strength and determination. Your instincts and resilience merge, which makes nearly anything possible. Express your ideas with clarity, especially those involving property or having to do with your domestic life. Tonight: At your favorite haunt. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You are easily pleased and might feel as if you can handle nearly anything. Be more direct in how you approach a personal matter. You get support on many different levels, which gives power to where you are coming from. Tonight: Treat yourself as you wish others would. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Hone your instincts and harness your creativity. These traits work well together most of the time,

though at times it might not seem like it. Your impact cannot be denied, especially when you are in sync with others and feeling confident. Tonight: In the limelight. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You might not be ready for all the changes that appear on the horizon, so you’ll want to consider taking a step back for a few days. Take some time before making any decisions or pushing yourself too hard. You know what is best for you. Tonight: Do your own thing. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You might be ready to move in a new chosen direction. However, don’t be surprised if after you take this step you feel slightly out of sync. You will adjust, given some time. Understand that taking risks is part of living. Tonight: Zero in on what you want. BORN TODAY U.S. Rep. Equipment fund latest top-up for B.C. schools Tom Fletcher Black Press

On the eve of its pre-election budget, the B.C. government has added to its year-long series of public school funding top-ups with $29.4 million for textbooks, equipment and supplies. The one-time “student learning grant” will soon be distributed to B.C.’s 60 public school districts and independent schools, which will find out by the end of February how much they will receive, Education Minister Mike Bernier announced on Sunday. “The $29.4 million will flow in the coming weeks and I expect all school districts to begin talking to parents and teachers,” Bernier said. “They should have two goals in mind: how to ease back-to-school supply costs for parents and how to bring B.C.’s new curriculum to life in the classroom.” As students prepared to return to school last fall, Bernier announced a $20 million “school enhancement” fund that covered upgrades such as flooring, plumbing, heating, roof replacement, windows, lighting and electrical upgrades. That fund was announced for projects that were not covered by the $45 million “fix it fund” that took applications in May. The “enhancement fund” required projects to be complete by the end of March 2017. Since last June, Bernier and Premier Christy Clark also announced a transportation fund to keep districts from charging for bus service, a fund to keep designated rural schools open and the return of $25 million in “administrative savings” that the education ministry required for the last two years. These one-time-funds are in addition to the province’s annual ministry budget, which includes $1.7 billion over three years for new schools and major projects such as seismic upgrades.

Dear Annie by Annie Lane

respect for time Dear Annie: I have a sister-in-law who always has spur-of-the-moment birthday parties for her children -- usually just giving us all one day’s notice. They are active in school activities and sports. All of these activities have schedules planned weeks in advance, but my sister-in-law’s excuse is that the parties have to be “squeezed in” when they have time. Well, what about my time? I am expected to drop plans and sacrifice my own children’s activities so they can go to their cousins’ birthday parties? I feel disrespected. I’m sure her kids wonder why no one comes to their parties. How should I deal with the next surprise-for-everyone party? -- Party Pooper Dear Party Pooper: The next time this happens, go to the party, because your little nieces and nephews really shouldn’t have to pay the price for their mom’s mistakes. But afterward, sit down and have a talk with your sister-in-law about her schedule. It sounds as if she is a bit underwater with the kids’ schedules and struggling to stay organized. Encourage her to cut back on a few of the activities. In the long run, she and her kids would benefit from a “less is more” approach. Dear Annie: This is my first correspondence to any advice columnist -- and I go way back to the days of Ann Landers. Your response to “Scuffed” was wrong from the salutation to the period of the last sentence! “Scuffed” wrote to you because her sisterin-law’s fiance “scratched” her car with his truck tires backing out of the driveway and he refused to pay for the damages. “Scuffed” had been leaving her children there for her sister-in-law to baby-sit but was reconsidering that arrangement. You told her to follow her instincts and not leave the kids there anymore. You would have her cause a family upheaval involving young children because of scratches to a car? Really? Just because you feel you should always follow your gut feeling? And then you told “Scuffed” to just invite the sister-in-law to her house to visit with the kids instead and said she would probably want an excuse to get out of the house anyway because of her fiance’s “lousy attitude.” It’s as if she had an angel and devil on her shoulders and all your advice came from the one holding the pitchfork. How about taking the high road and a deep breath and worrying about more important things in life? In the fleeting precious time we have on this earth, keep the peace and show the love. You’d have her give that up because of paint on a car door. C’mon. -- Older and Wiser Dear Older: I appreciate your outlook about keeping the peace and showing the love, but I think you misunderstood my point. I wasn’t suggesting that “Scuffed” stop speaking to her future brother-in-law. I only meant that she should stop leaving her children with the couple. Given the man’s bizarrely aggressive response to the incident -calling up “Scuffed” and her husband to tell them that he’d never apologize -- it seems plausible he has anger issues. Why risk exposing your children to that sort of volatility? Send your questions for Annie Lane to dearannie@creators.com. Mike Selby In ‘Drawn by Their Smiles,’ Cranbrook’s Kimiko Toyota chronicles all of her accomplishments, setbacks, tears, and joys as she tries (and is ultimately successful) in establishing His Hope Uganda—a non government children’s ministry in Uganda. Fans of James Dashner’s ‘Maze Runner’ books should enjoy ‘The Fever Code’—a prequel to the entire series. Preschool Story Time is this Wednesday at 11 am, 1:15 pm, & 6:30 pm, and Toddler Story Time is 10 and 11 am. Both will be all about Lions! New this year is Baby Laptime on Fridays at 1 pm. This program is for babies who are not yet walking so a specific age is not really set— best approximation is under 1 year of age. Since we do not have daycare for older siblings we ask that parents who have babies and children who are walking come to the toddler storytime instead of the baby laptime. FREE one-on-one tech training session for those of you who want to enhance your current computing skills. We cover many topics including Basic Tablet usage, Basic Computer usage, Windows 10 training, Window 8 + 8.1 training, Window 7 training, Microsoft Suit training, Library E book training, and much more. To register, please contact the Library at (250) 426-4063, or sign up at the front desk. On display this month is Chris Nord’s 40-year collection of Pendelfin hand painted ceramic rabbits.
