No evidence to back neglect allegations at New Horizons JOCELYN DOLL

Responding to a public allegation of neglect at New Horizons senors care home, two divisions of Island Health inspected the site the day after the allegations were made and found no evidence of neglect. “(Island Health) sent in a licensing officer unannounced the day after these allegations came out on Facebook, did an inspection of the building and were unable to find any evidence of lack of appropriate care,” said Tim Orr, director of Residential Services at Island Health. “I also sent one of my clinical quality leads to do an inspection at New Horizons. She went up, she inspected the building, she talked with staff she talked with residents and resident’s families. She came away and reported back to me saying ‘you know the building looks clean, I didn’t hear concerns from families or residents.’ So I also have been unable to substantiate the accusations made in that Facebook post.” Orr said that though the inspection didn’t turn up any evidence, Licensing is continuing to investigate the allegations. “They have not determined yet if there was any violation, but they continue to work on that.” The allegations were made public by Jenna Hagel, a private care aid who had been looking after a client at New Horizons since May of 2016. Hagel claims she voiced her concerns to the nurses on duty and the site manager. Orr confirmed that he was sent documentation of a dialogue going back and forth between New Horizons and Hagel going back to last summer. Mid-January, Hagel

took to Facebook to speak out for residents who she believes have been “raped of their dignity.” She said she has seen briefs left unchanged, feces on the floor or on the bed spread and mouthcare not done. “I’ve seen the foot of the made bed soaked with urine,” she said in an email interview. “Elsewhere in the facility I saw people at the table sleeping with food down their face or on their shirt. I saw my client’s neighbour waiting with the call bell on to use the bathroom for over an hour.” Hagel posted her concerns, as well as photos of the alleged neglect, to her personal Facebook page as well as a public Campbell River Rant and Rave Facebook page with a large following. Ian West, vice president of operations at Park Place Seniors Living which operates New Horizons, said that not only is it against the law to take photos such as that without the resident’s written authorization, he is also unable to verify if the photos are of an actual resident at New Horizons. “The most referred to photo..was one showing a leg of a person that had drying fecal matter,” West said. “This ‘snapshot’ may lead a person to believe that this is evidence of neglect by staff. Another way of understanding it may be that residents are encouraged and supported to remain active and as independent as their condition allows. “In doing so, it is industry best practice to have residents go to the toilet themselves rather than label them incontinent and place adult diapers on them… In this process sometimes residents may return from a visit from the bathroom with fecal material

showing.” New Horizons, operated by Park Place Seniors Living, provides subsidized residential care for seniors. There are 86 subsidized beds and eight private-pay beds on site. According to the Community Care Quickfacts Directory published by the Office of the Seniors Advocate in January, New Horizons funded 3.15 hours of direct care per resident per day in 2015/16. The provincial targets for care hours are 3.36. Less than 10 per cent of care facilities in B.C. met or exceeded the target. “Even though we are not funded at 3.36, neglect and abuse does not take place at New Horizons,” said West. Hagel doesn’t think more care hours or staff will fix the problems she says she has seen. She believes that the standards of care set by the legislations are too low. “All that being said, I wish there was a way to get it across to people that it is not just shortage of staff or hours of care per day per resident, but how we care,” she said. “What has happened to the fundamentals? Meeting the basic needs that we all require? The physiological needs like air, food and water. Safety needs like health,well being and personal security. The need for love and belonging, like intimacy (just a hand to hold is considered intimate) family and friendships. The need for self esteem, everyone has a need to feel respected, accepted and valued. And self actualization, living to a persons full potential.” MLA Claire Trevena pointed out that though Hagel’s allegations were troubling, it is important to remember that they are only allegations at this point. However, it brings into question the residential care system. “We have this very

fixed, financiallyimposed care model that doesn’t work for all residents,” she said. “Some residents obviously need more stimulation and a lot more care while other residents are much more able to be more self-sufficient, and the fact that we’re limiting the number of hours that any care worker can give a senior comes back to the systemic issue of an underfunded system. It’s hugely problematic.” She said there needs to be a serious investment in enabling seniors to stay at home as long as possible as well as changing the amount of care hours received to be budgeted based on need instead of prescribed based on budget. “It must be extraordinarily stressful on the care providers and workers in care homes and on those people who run the care homes,” she said. “This model doesn’t work for anyone.” Residential care facilities in B.C. operate under either the Hospital Act or the Community Care and Assisted Living Act. The Community Care and Assisted Living Act, which New Horizons operates under, lays out guidelines for the facility itself such as how wide a hallway has to be (1.83 metres) to the maximum temperature the hot water in the building is heated to (49 degrees Celsius).

It also requires that people with a license under the act provide “comfortably furnished lounge facilities that have, in total, at least two square metres of floor space for each person in the facility” as well as 1.5 square metres of outdoor activity space per resident. As well as the physical facilities, the act outlines how residents should be cared for. It requires that licensees assist persons in care to maintain daily oral health. They are also required to provide residents, other than those in hospice care, with ongoing physical, social and recreational activities best suited to the needs of the person in care. In the act, neglect is defined as “the failure of a care provider to meet the needs of a person

in care, including food, shelter, care or supervision.” “I believe the staff at New Horizons, as with all long term care sites, are very committed to quality care and work very hard to provide that care,” Orr said. West said that the unfounded allegations have directly impacted staff at New Horizons. “They feel their integrity and their dedica-

tion to the residents has been abused and basically maligned,” he said. “Unfortunately, a lot of people at the bedside get hurt by these accusations, they are very proud where they work, they are very proud of the care they give, for someone to have the ability to just post something on to social media where there is no accountability and no fact checking, hurts those individuals.”

Campbell River will not participate in a special edition of Communities in Bloom this year. At its Monday meeting, council made the decision to decline an invitation from the beautification program, citing too many prior commitments. Ross Milnthorp, the city’s general manager of parks, recreation and culture, said city staff do not have the time nor the resources to take part in Communities in Bloom (CIB). “The city has a number of large projects/events scheduled for 2017 and staff are fully engaged in executing the 2017 work plan and do not have the capacity to undertake the work necessary to participate in the CIB program,” Milnthorp said. The city’s Community Services, Recreation and Culture Commission, which is made up of members from the public, agreed that taking on Communities in Bloom this year would likely not be possible. “The commission discussed the capacity of the community volunteer base and the level of volunteer effort needed to host these events,” wrote Coun. Colleen Evans, chair of the commission, in a report to council. “The commission concluded that adding the Communities in Bloom event to the already extensive schedule of events in 2017 may not be feasible.” Coun. Charlie Cornfield said he agreed with

that assessment. “It’s not something we can take on by ourselves,” Cornfield said. “I think given the timeframe that’s left for 2017, it’s an unrealistic goal but at least we took it back to the people and said ‘what do you think?’ So I’m going to support the motion that we don’t participate this year.” In 2017 the city is hosting a number of large events, including the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities Conference in April which is expected to attract 250 participants, as well as the Vancouver Island Sustainable Technology Expo in June (150 participants), the Elders Gathering in July (3,0005,000 p ar t icip ants) and Tribal Journeys in August (5,000-7,000 participants). Milnthorp said those events, on top of the city’s annual events, will already require a “significant amount of volunteer and staff time.” “Staff believe that recruiting volunteers to organize and coordinate the community around the CIB program will be very difficult,” Milnthorp said. The city was invited to participate in a special, one-time Communities in Bloom category that celebrates Canada’s 150th birthday this year. Campbell River earned the right to participate as a past national Communities in Bloom winner. The city took the national title in 2011 but withdrew from the competition in 2013 due to budget constraints.

Increase in funding for school district thanks to unexpected increase in enrolment MIKE DAVIES CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The Campbell River School District (SD72) approved its final budget for the current school year at this week’s public meeting, and there’s some good news: the district has seen a sudden and unexpected spike in enrolment, meaning more money from the provincial government is coming its way. The board prepares a preliminary budget each May which estimates the costs, revenues and staffing needs that are expected for the upcoming school year. “Typically, we are fairly close to where the actuals come in,” SecretaryTreasurer Kevin Patrick said in his report to the board this week in presenting the revised budget, “but we do have to

make some adjustments for what we’re actually seeing in the classrooms.” As actual costs become known as the year goes on – some hiring decisions are made later in the year, for example – they compile the information into their final budget submission, due by the end of February. “So what do we know for this year? Well, the big impact – the big change – this year is that we actually had more students than we projected,” Patrick told the board. “We ended up with 112 students more than we projected, and in my time here, that’s never happened.” An additional 112 students, Patrick said, is “significant,” mainly because it means an additional $1-million or so in revenue from the provincial government.

But that money, obviously, has to go towards the student needs across the district. After all, having more students enrolled, while garnering the district more money from the government, also means higher expenses. But when combined with the additional $255,596 in administrative savings that the government returned to the district this year and some other expenditure savings – such as the closure of Oyster River and Discovery Passage Elementary schools – even after the additional expense that comes along with extra students, the district went from having a projected operating budget deficit of $881,524 to having an operating surplus of $653,707 for the current year.

After all was said and done, the board passed a final fiscal budget of $64,864,184 and will now immediately turn its attention to preparing the preliminary budget for 2017-18, which will involve “extensive consultation” with various stakeholders and partner groups, Patrick says. Specific dates the public should be aware of during the consultation period are April 11, when the board will sit down with the district Parent Advisory Council, April 18, which is the deadline for public submissions regarding next year’s operating budget to be heard at the April 25 public board meeting. Next year’s proposed school calendar features a full two-week spring break, winter break that starts later in December and a four-day weekend at Remembrance Day. The calendar, in its current form, has classes beginning Sept. 5 after three days of noninstructional professional development days for teachers and staff the week prior. “This came out of discussions with the calendar committee, which includes stakeholder partner representatives including high school students, trustee representation and a lot of good and thoughtful discussion around what a calendar could and should look like,” Superintendent Tom Longridge told the board

this week’s public meeting, where the proposed calendar was approved. “At the end of the day, it’s similar to ones we’ve had before, but there are things of note.” One of those things is when winter break is slated to begin. Because of the way the dates fall, the two weeks surrounding Christmas where kids would be out of school were a bit more complicated to figure out than some years. “There was a lot of discussion around where the Christmas break should start, whether it should be mid-December or the last week of December, closer to Christmas,” Longridge says. There was concern from the secondary schools that coming back to class later in January would leave less time to prepare for final exams, Longridge says, “but

there are only two exams now, where there used to be six.” Elementary and middle school Christmas concerts and other winter celebrations became factors in that discussion, as well, because those festivities “become a challenge (to schedule) if there are fewer school days in December,” Longridge says. So winter break is currently slated to begin Dec. 23 and see students return to class Jan. 8. To compensate for the longer fall stretch, Longridge says, “we have proposed an extra long weekend in November so it kind of breaks up that 3.5 months a little bit,” and there is still some discussion about whether they will cut the three Pro-D days that are set for before school starts down to two and having the last one later

Trustee John Kerr says he likes the schedule as it is proposed, because with spring break falling all the way at the end of March and running through the first week of April, “it would be a long grind” if the Christmas break started a week earlier and classes were back in session right at the start of January. Fraser Institute’s latest Report Card on Schools is out MIKE DAVIES

Public schools in the Campbell River School District (SD72) have scored extremely low on the most recent Fraser Institute Report Card of British Columbia’s Elementary Schools. Superintendent of Schools Tom Longridge,

however, says people shouldn’t read too much into the numbers. The highest-ranking public elementary school in SD72 was L’École Willow Point Elementary, which came in at No. 478 out of the 956 schools ranked. The next highest SD72 school on the list was Sandowne, which was

ranked all the way down at 721. The ratings of schools by the Fraser Institute in its report card use the results of the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) test given to Grade 4 and Grade 7 students annually to generate its rankings. And therein lies the main problem, Lon-

gridge says. While the Fraser Institute bases its scoring on 10 different indicators to give them statistical relevance, all of those indicators are founded on the results of one test, which Longridge says makes it less reliable in terms of applicable data. “They have to break out mechanisms to

make it look like there are multiple elements to their system, but it’s really all predicated on the FSA itself and everything surrounding that,” Longridge says. “They make it look like they’re taking 10 elements into account, but it’s all one.” And the FSA itself has been fraught with controversy over the years. The BC Teachers’ Federation, for example, has a long history of disagreeing with the very premise of the Fraser Institute’s report card and the FSA, going so far as calling the annual report card an “attack on public schools,” and sending out letters encouraging parents to exempt their children from taking the test say-

ing, “we should never allow a single test to be allowed to pit school communities against each other, but that is exactly what happens every year and it’s time we worked together to end this misleading practice.” Campbell River and District Teachers’ Association President Dave Harper responded to the Mirror’s questions about the ranking by saying he “won’t waste time commenting” on the report card, simply calling it “garbage.” While Longridge is a bit more diplomatic in his response to the report, he also admits, “the mechanism that they use to attribute scores is problematic. That’s why there’s so much resistance among public school teachers in the province, and that’s why there’s a lot of resistance to the FSA instrument itself. It calls the results of the FSA into question, just because of the political nature of the Fraser Institute’s rankings.” Longridge also says SD72 is “at somewhat of a disadvantage” in scoring based on the way the Fraser Institute makes its calculations. “We have middle schools, and seven of the elements of the Fraser Institute’s 10 rankings are connected to both Grade 4 and Grade 7, but our Grade 7s are in a different school, so while I know it can be argued that it’s the same kids, it’s not necessarily, when you look at how its put together.” There are other factors that Longridge says call the report card into question, as well. “It also penalizes schools that have fewer students participating in the testing and advantages private

schools and those that are in areas of higher socio-economic status.” The Fraser Institute itself cautions against using its report card to make a decision about what school a child should attend, saying that although its report card “provides a valuable tool for making a decision,” in that regard, it also adds, “the choice of school should not be made solely on the basis of a single source of information,” and, “a sound academic program should be complimented by effective programs in areas of school activity not measured by the report card.” That is an assessment with which Longridge can agree. “It’s really difficult to pick out anything in the Fraser Institute rankings that is helpful to schools,” he says. “It might be perceived to be helpful to parents, because it distills some very complex elements into a single dimension they can rank, but I think it’s very much a misrepresentation of what goes into a school.” Longridge says that’s one of the main obstacles in trying to gauge any school’s success, and it makes data collection and summary very difficult. “How do you count things that matter rather than counting things that you can count? That’s the dilemma we’re in,” Longridge says. “I’m very proud of the work that teachers in this school community do and how dedicated they are to their profession, to the students and to student outcomes. “So yes, it’s a concern when you see that not being valued by something that just has a quantitative figure that isn’t what’s representative of what’s happening in that school.”

could increase the risk for heart disease. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation website, lifestyle risk factors include an unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, and unhealthy weight, smoking, stress and excessive

alcohol and drug abuse. Health conditions that are risk factors are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and atrial fibrillation (irregular heart beat). To reduce the risk of heart disease, the foundation gives tips on how to manage risk factors that you have control over, like diet and level of physical activity. As well as looking after yourself, heart health month is a chance to learn the signs of a heart attack in yourself as well as someone else. The Heart and Stroke Foundation website says that signs can vary from person to person and may be different for men and women but chest discomfort, sweating, upper body discomfort, nausea, shortness of breath and light-headedness are all signs that someone is having a heart attack.

C it y c ou n c i l h a s endorsed a detailed design plan for an overhaul of the city’s downtown core. At its Monday meeting, council signed off on using Refresh Downtown – a document aimed at promoting downtown as a place to live and do business – as council policy going forward.

The document was informed by the public through several open houses held last year, as well as an online survey. According to findings compiled by city staff, a pedestrian-priority downtown concept was supported during the community engagement events as well as “a more multi-modal and pedestrian design.” To that end, Refresh Downtown suggests

extending the existing waterfront walkway into downtown, with connections from Highway 19A to Shoppers Row. The document also recommends the installation of roundabouts. “The traditional intersection, from a safety point of view, there’s more conflict points. A roundabout has fewer conflict points, which is why it’s supported by ICBC,” said Marianne

Wade, though, said the community had a problem with adding a roundabout at St. Ann’s and Highway 19A. “When we went out to the community, the roundabout at St. Ann’s and Shoppers was the one that people were more... uncomfortable with the concept,” Wade said. Staff ’s intention with the proposed location was to help ease traffic back-up along Pier Street through to Shoppers

Row. But, she said staff recognized the public’s concern and have put forward options to modify the traffic signal controls to be more pedestrianfriendly. Council took that feedback to heart on Monday and made the decision to remove the roundabout at St. Ann’s and Highway 19A from the conceptual plan, but keep the text for future reference. Coun. areas first. “I don’t think this is a good area to put an experimental roundabout,” Cornfield said. “I think leaving it as a future potential option is great. Let’s try it somewhere else first and see how it works.” Mayor Andy Adams agreed. “While there was consensus that a roundabout would be a good fit at all the public open houses I attended, this location was not a good fit,” Adams said. “There are places that it works and there are places that it doesn’t.” Refresh Downtown also suggests, with the exceptions of Dogwood and Highway 19A, that there is “broad public support for reducing speed limits within downtown from 50 km/h to 30 km/h, particularly on Shoppers Row.” The Refresh Document also focuses on integrating underground and above-ground infrastructure requirements into downtown designs, while considering the effects of sea level rise. The Refresh Downtown document is not a bylaw and is non-statutory. Lessons learned when teaching your child to drive

If you’re brave enough to teach your child to drive, understand one important thing. What you say, or what you think you say, is not what they hear. For instance, on the first time heading out of our driveway, I was beaming with pride. My little girl had got her ‘L’ and there she was behind the wheel. Of my car. Behind the wheel. The STEERING wheel! One other thing to remember; on most models of cars the doors automatically lock once the car is in motion. Plan your escape early. As we approached the end of the driveway I believe I said, quietly and calmly, “Just stop, look both ways and when it’s clear, enter traffic.” Apparently, what my daughter heard was, “GO! NO! STOP! The centrepiece of the provincial budget announced Tuesday is a tax cut. But not any tax cut. This is a cut to Medical Services Plan premiums, slicing them in half for most people, starting next year. Heading into an election in just a few months, the B.C. Liberals obviously want to take credit for slashing the unpopular fee levied to pay for a portion of our province’s health care costs. There’s just one problem with that – they’re slicing away increases they put into place. In fact, it was just a year ago that most middleclass folks saw a 14 per cent increase in MSP premiums in the last budget! Cutting the MSP will be welcome, but the fact that the Liberals are able to cut it just emphasizes how well things are going in B.C. Right now, the economy is booming, government coffers are full – and the Liberals can afford to cut back the tax that penalizes the poor and middle class the most. Of course, if they really wanted to help, they’d simply fold it into income tax – a more progressive option than a fee on minimum wage workers. -Black Press

I listened politely as the instructor gave a glowing, passing grade. I was proud, yet inquisitive. I stepped closer so only he could hear, “Did, she, um, use any questionable language?” The instructor smiled. “No,” he said. “She was very polite and very easy to teach. Although I have had that question before.”

It is far more likely that the shift (for those who can afford it) is due to reduced quality of education in our public schools resulting from BC Liberal underfunding. No doubt, however, that the BC Liberals will be telling us we have some of the best marks in the world on standardized tests. Naturally, when teaching is targeted to learning-specific tests rather than targeted to

open, rational, logical, thinking, test results well be high. The crux of matters is not “Socialist Philosophies,” it is the BC Liberals’ massive vacuum where respect for our Canadian Constitution and Charter of Rights and Freedoms should be. This void was obviously revealed by the vulgar waste of taxpayers’ dollars for three appeals, u lt i m ately, to ou r Supreme Court of Canada where they “lost.” In actuality “We” all lost dollars that should have gone to public education. Any freshman law student could tell you that B.C. teachers’ rights to a fair, collective bargaining process under our constitution were violated. This is a “no-brainer.” So, Premier Clark’s behavior comes as no surprise as her mentor was Gordon Campbell. Just in case memories are short, Gordo sat down

pre-election with the HEU (mostly women) and promised he would “honour” their new contract with their first raise in seven or more years. His first action as BC premier was to tear up their new contract and impose one that cut back wages by 15 per cent. It took my wife nine years to get back to year 2000 wages. There’s your BC Liberal “honour.” This case was also appealed three times in spite of the obvious violation of the Charter Rights. These flagrantly wasted dollars should have gone where they belonged – to our public Healthcare. So I suppose Mr. Fletcher, that in support of your “anti-Socialism” soap box, you are prepared to give up your Charter Rights to “journalistic freedom of speech” and your “Socialist” medical plan. Donor: ‘You never know who you’re going to save’ life every few months so it’s not a big deal and they say you potentially save three lives every time you donate. It seems like such an easy thing to do.” Kyle first attended a blood donor clinic when she was in university and she’s kept at it ever since. On Jan. 4, when the blood donor clinic was last in Campbell River, Kyle gave her 100th donation. She received a commemorative pin to mark the milestone and was invited to attend a thank-you function sometime next year. “Some day a family member or close friend may need a blood donation but if not, there’s a ton of people out there who could use it,” Kyle says. “I would encourage people to go donate. You never know who you’re saving.”

For Kyle, attending the blood donor clinics when they come to Campbell River is so important that she schedules her life around the days the clinics come to town. To Kyle, donating blood is a natural. “You go and you realize it’s so simple,” Kyle says. “It’s an hour out of your

“There was a stretch of time on a Wednesday afternoon when all the volunteers were sitting around, twiddling their thumbs, the intake area was empty and all the beds were empty,” he says. “I thought, ‘this is stupid, we have enough people in this town, we should be able to fill these beds non-stop.’” Since then, when the clinics are in town, sandwich boards are put up downtown and in Mariner’s Square to draw attention to the clinic’s presence and a banner is put up at the Community Centre where all the clinics are held. The clinics come to Campbell River every 56 days. The next one happens to be this week, and runs from Feb. 28-March 2. The clinic returns April 25-27. Marshall says the process of donating blood is relatively simple. Donors can pre-register online or when they leave a previous clinic. Once you are signed in, donors are screened to ensure their blood is healthy. The process of actually giving blood depends on

When I landed it, Paul was already launching a step up jump onto a ladder ramp followed by a bigger drop. We were riding tire to tire and it all went beautifully. When Paul pulled to the side to see how I was doing, I rode past him. Once your mojo comes back, you don’t risk losing it with unnecessary stops. The trail never let up and I was hitting things blind. It was probably one of the best rides I’d ever had and when we popped out on the skider road to get Logan, he was surprised to see me in the lead. I was riding way over my head that day, but it was working so I didn’t second guess it. More skinnies, bigger drops and to top it all off, I hit a road gap bigger than anything I’d ever done . . . and it felt natural. This was a ride to remember and I’d like to believe I remember it because of the trail, the stunts, or the friends, but in reality it was the last 50 feet of trail that has kept this one in my head all these years. As we were getting to the bottom of the trail and chatting about which was the preferred pub, I rode slightly off trail to bunny hop over a log. The diameter of the log was about 12 inches at best. Something I had done thousands of times. On this day, where I was apparently invincible, it should have been like riding over a painted line on the road, but for some reason I slipped off my pedal and bounced into the dirt. As I stood up laughing, I felt blood running into my shoe. The looks on the guy’s faces were telling to say the least. Wide eyes, gaping mouths and one guy gagging.

I looked down to see a 4 inch gash in my shin and what looked like exposed bone. Those areas of the body with no meat sure bleed a lot. (aluminum vs: flesh. I covered it in gauze, secured it with duct tape and headed to the pub with the boys. After a ride like that you can’t let a little blood stop you from celebrating. Stitches could get sorted later; first we needed to re-hydrate and relive the highlights. The little voice can’t take that away.

Tyees take Towhees in Timberline tourney final

Last weekend Timberline Secondary School hosted a six-Team Invitational Tournament for Junior Girls Basketball Teams from the Island. The Carihi Tyees started off the tournament playing the host school Timberline and it was a hard fought game by both teams. Carihi came out on top thanks to great shooting by all players. They were led by Nyla Haider who had 16 points and Jolyn Barley who had 15. In the next game, Carihi faced the Duncan Christian Chargers and thanks to great team-defence, came out on top. Tory Stewart was the high scorer with 14 points. Next, the Tyees faced Vanier who was a very aggressive team with a great press. The Tyees came out very composed and were able to break the press and come up with timely layups to get out to a lead in the first quarter. Great team defence limited the Vanier charge and Carihi won 30-14. Timely shooting from Holly Crosby helped push the Tyees to victory. The Tyees then faced École Au Coeur De L’île from Comox. They again showed great team defence led by Sandrine Daniels and Rowen

The Carihi Junior Girls Tyees had a successful weekend at crosstown rival Timberline’s tournament.

Carihi was able to get a lead in the first quarter and pushed the lead to 13 at half. Carihi went on to win 37-25. Carihi was led by point guard Haley Wingert who controlled the pace of the game and was a great leader on the court. The team appreciated MaKayla Dobson who cheered from the bench all tournament nursing a sprained ankle.

Fishing Corner Despite Campbell River being in the middle of a number of fishable rivers, the best steelhead fishing has been to the north at the Cluxewe River on the North Island. This river has heavy fishing pressure on the weekends and as many as nine fish can be hooked and released in a day and that has been happening as the river levels are ideal at the moment.
