Sewer system strained with ground water Ba rry Coulter and Tre vor Cr awl ey
The word of the week is water. Following a winter with record amounts of snow, the amount of ground water is proving equally historic, to the bane of many homeowners. Late last week, the City of Cranbrook reported a large volume of calls concerning flooding basements, due to drastically warmer temperatures, fast snow melt and periods of rainfall. There were some issues with the city’s sewer system over the weekend, with water backing up into some basements in the St. Mary’s school neighbourhood on Saturday night. The city blamed an over capacity of water in the system, as residents attempt to scramble to contain flooding in homes across Cranbrook. Tony Hetu, Public Works Manager for the City of Cranbrook, said the issue was due to a lot of the rainwater and

Welcome to spring, in Cranbrook, the Venice of the East Kootenay. snow melting, and a lot of the storm water was going into the city’s sanitary sewer lines, instead of the storm water system designed for
ground water. “You can imagine, you have two- or three-hundred pumps running in the city, in the sanitary system
that’s not designed for storm water, it just multiplies,” Hetu told the Townsman Monday. If anyone is experiencing water issues in
their homes, the city is asking residents who are pumping water out to allow it to flow outside and not directly into the sewer system.
“There seems to be a higher than normal amount of ground water,” Hetu said. “The storm water system is designed to receive
ground water. Try to minimize what you’re putting into the sanitary system.”

Three hikers rescued in Kimberley Nature Park F o r t h e Tow n s m a n
On March 18, three hikers lost in the Kimberley Nature Park called for help. Kimberley RCMP received the call at 11:13
pm from one of three hikers, as they were unable to navigate their way back. Police were able to determine they were located somewhere between Forest
Crown and Trickle Creek Golf Course. Police Dog Service along with five Kimberley Search and Rescue members began searching the area. The
subjects were located after a couple of hours and by 2 a.m. they were safely back. Although very cold and wet the subjects were not injured and medical at-
tention was not required. The subjects from Edmonton had frequented the area before, but with the heavy snow and darkness,
they took some wrong turns leading them to call for help. “The men were not prepared and had the temperature been colder or they were unable
to summon help, the outcome could have been tragic,” said Alison Lomon, Search and Rescue Manager.

oah Beek has been around the world and he’s climbed to some pretty extreme heights along the way. The Cranbrook athlete is back home after competing in the UIAA World Cup that started in December and included eight events in the U.S., Asia, and Europe. The World Cup circuit features the top competitive climbers in the world, hailing from South Korea, Russia and even Canada. That’s right — Beek is following in the footsteps of his mentor Gord McArthur, who has put the country on the competitive climbing map for the last half-dozen years and represented Canada on the global stage at the Sochi Olympics in 2014. This past season was a banner year for Beek, who earned some impressive results, including capturing the North American Championship in Colorado, a fourth-place finish in China and a second-place finish at the World Juniors in France. “It was such an amazing experience NEW ADULT NON-FICTION March 21st, 2017 305.8

this year,” said Beek. “It was so fun, moments of no fun, and so much emotion.” This is Beek’s third season on the World Cup tour, which he did alongside McArthur with fellow Cranbrookian Ineke Rhebergen also competing in the women’s division.
“My first time making finals in Durango was probably the defining moment of the season, because it was so unexpected. It’s kind of a home crowd, we were in America, but still it’s more of a home crowd than Europe.” Noah Beek The World Cup circuit started off strong for Beek, who finished as the North American champion at the first event in Durango, Colorado, by being the top North American by placing seventh overall. “My first time making finals in Durango, I think, was probably the defining moment of the season,” said Beek, “because it was so unexpected. It’s kind of a home crowd, we were in America, but still it’s more of a home crowd than Europe. “Making semi-finals and first place was unexpected, then making finals which, I was shooting to make semi-finals…It was all so good and I learned so much and I loved it.” Beek followed the Durango competition up with a fourth place finish in Beijing, China, and seemed destined for a spot on the podium until Nikolai Kuzovlev, the last climber, hit the structure and captured first place, bumping Beek down a ranking. “He climbed amazing and was the only one to top the route, so he definitely deserved it,” Beek said. Each competition
structure is set by a different route-setter, which varies up the styles and approaches the climbers take for each event. Beek attributed his success at the first two events to the routes that played to his strengths. “Those were the two Russian setters and they set very powerful and boulder-y, really strong moves and very technical, which is kind of my style,” said Beek, “so I feel I had a bit of an advantage with those ones compared to all the other ones where they had different setters that didn’t set to my ability.” Beek continued his tour of the world with stops in Cheongsong (Korea) Saas Fee (Switzerland) Rabenstein (Italy) and Champagny-en-Vanoise (France) — all with impressive results. Champagny-en-Vanoise hosted one World Cup event, however, it was also the site for the Youth World Championships, where Beek nabbed second place in the U22 category. For now, Beek will enjoy a brief respite from training with the World Cup tour now in the offseason. However, he’s caught the competition bug and is fired up about next year and what the future has in store for the sport. Though not a podium sport at the Olympics, the UIAA is shooting for climbing’s inclusion into the 2022 program, which will be hosted in Bejiing. “My progression — this year I wasn’t really expecting to do as well as I did, so it was really nice to see that,” said Beek. “I’ve always progressing and it’s pretty common for climbers to hit plateaus, where they just don’t continue to grow in their strength, but I haven’t really hit that yet, so it’s pretty satisfying.” • Beek would like to thank High Country Sports and Rocky Mountain Prosthetics and Orthotics for supporting him during the competitive climbing season.

City talks tree management after one falls, takes out power Submit ted
The power outage in Cranbrook over the weekend, caused by a fallen tree highlights the importance of good tree management, the City of Cranbrook stated Monday in a press release. It is important for residents to talk to their neighbours when it comes to concerns around neighbourhood trees. Each resident is responsible for trees on their own private property and are encouraged to have a professional arborist assess and remove trees if there is concern around safety and potential property damage should a tree come down. There are a number of businesses in the City that specialize in the assessment and removal of trees from private property. The City of Cranbrook is often asked how you determine the ownership of a tree. It starts right at ground level; private trees have over half of the trunk diameter on the private side of the property line. City-owned trees have over half the trunk di-
ameter on the City side of the property line. If you are unsure as to the ownership of a tree(s), please refer to your property survey, usually found with your home purchase documents. It is also important to review your home insurance policy around damage to property or adjacent properties because of falling trees or other tree debris, like branches. The City of Cranbrook understands the importance of public safety around trees. The City is responsible for the care and maintenance of all public trees that line our streets, trees that are in parks and trees along boulevards. The City has a professional arborist on staff, which conducts trimming and oversees the removal of diseased, dying, dead or dangerous trees as required on all City property. If you see a tree on public property that appears unhealthy, dying or may potentially cause property damage or injury, please let us know right away by calling the City at 250-489-0218.

ally hit the hardest, however, some water can also get into houses from ice buildup underneath roof tiles and drain into attics, Hockley added. In addition to the sewer issues, power was knocked out to roughly 2,000 homes on Satur-
day evening after a tree fell on wires, according to a BC Hydro update. The power outage affected homes south of Industrial A Rd, east of Cobham Ave, north of 5th St., west of College Way, but was fully restored 12 hours later.

A Cranbrook resident is reporting yet another scam making the rounds, aimed at the unwary and susceptible. The resident reports that she got an email claiming to be from Impark, informing her she had unpaid parking fees due from an Impark parking site in Toronto. Impark (Imperial Parking Corporation) is one of the largest parking management companies in North America, operating approximately 3,400 parking facilities. She said the email was very nice and official looking, “but once I started reading, I could see there was something wrong with it, something not quite right
with the English. “There were also links and an attachment, which of course I didn’t click on.” The resident said she contacted Impark, who saidthat they were aware of the scam, that the email was definitely illegitimate. She added that the email came to her through her old K=Yahoo email account. Yahoo was recently subjected to a hacking operation, in what U.S. officials are calling one of the largest data breaches in history. The hack of Yahoo exposed 500 million user accounts. The resident who called the Townsman about the matter wanted readers to be aware of the scam, and remind

Former children’s rights watchdog Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond is suing the B.C. government, alleging a breach of contract for not providing her with promised pension benefits. Turpel-Lafond, who finished her term early last fall as the B.C. A Ministry of Justice statement confirms the province has received the notice of claim. “Counsel will review the allegations and prepare a response in due course,” the statement reads. “As the matter is before the courts, we have no further comment.”

Looking for help
August 6, 1926 put Cranbrook on the map to the rest of the world. This was the beginning day of the now famous “Great Elephant Hunt”. It began with the escape of the elephants being unloaded from the train and ended with the final capture of Cranbrook Ed. The Cranbrook History Centre would be interested in hearing from anyone in our community who may have experienced being in Cranbrook, 91 years ago, during this escapade. Next month a film crew from the coast is visiting Cranbrook to document the story of the elephants’ escape and consequent capture. Having a first-hand account of this adventure would certainly add to the story. Also, the Cranbrook History centre would be interested in seeing any early 1900’s photographs of Baker Street. We are particularly keen to see photos of the block which includes the Raworth and Mercantile stores ( now Delamont’s to Western Financial ). If you are able to help in either of these research requests please contact the Cranbrook History Centre at 250-489-3918. Dave Humphrey Cranbrook
Our wildlife (mis)management
In a recent letter, Mark Hall, vice president of the EK Wildlife Association, presented a detailed account on the implications brought forward by humans intervening to feed our struggling ungulate population. When I first heard about this issue, like most I thought it was a good idea for locals to supply hay and feed to help curb this problem. But after reading the article about the side effects of this type of feeding, I became doubtful. Of course no one wants to see our wildlife suffering and starving for lack of food — but if human feeding in turn endangers their well-being in the long run by the possibility of spreading infectious
disease, or disrupting digestion from exposure to feed their systems are not accustomed to, this becomes an additional problem. As Mr. Hall stated: “Ungulates benefit more when we preserve and restore natural habits on a continual basis and reduce human caused disturbances...” (i.e. over development and hunting). I am a “true wildlife lover” as I love animals and do not hunt. As well-intentioned as Bill Bennett, Carmen Purdy and others may be by wanting to “help” our affected ungulate population, am I the only one that finds the complete irony in this? It seems to me the ONLY reason groups such as the Kootenay Wildlife Heritage Fund and EK Wildlife Association are concerned about wildlife numbers is because they want a plentiful population to prey upon and kill come hunting season. Would they be putting in the same amount of effort if it were truly to “help” the wildlife? I don’t think they’d have nearly as much of a vested interest. I had to shake my head when Purdy said “the NDP cannot be trusted to do anything for wildlife, look at their most recent announcement to ban grizzly bear hunting”... Well, that is actually a political party working toward the benefit of wildlife, in that they want to protect the grizzly bear population and you know, stop killing them. Not to mention the trophy hunt ban is supported by the majority of BC citizens, a high 90 percent approval of those against it. Both he and Bennett should not be taking this sensitive issue of wildlife management and turning it into a political agenda. If not for our continued human interference, wildlife would naturally manage itself. When we try to control specific animal populations, be it urban deer, predators or larger populations, we are affecting naturally occurring adaptation, eco-systems, trophic cascades andkeystone species. I don’t want to see any of our local wildlife perish but that is sometimes unfortunately the circle of life — when will we learn to stop the controlling and killing, and leave the animals alone. he death and dissolving of a “parliament,” as each term of a B.C. government is technically called, leaves a scattering of tombstones. These are the proposed laws that die on the order paper when the increasingly bitter debate spills out into the street for the election campaign. Some of these proposals will spring to life again if the sponsoring party wins a majority. Some will remain cold and forgotten. For now they act as sketch maps of the visions competing for your support on May 9. The BC Liberal government’s budget is the big one, presented but barely debated. That’s where Premier Christy Clark suddenly promised to end the Medical Services Plan tax, cut small business income tax and fiddle with a variety of other revenue streams to Victoria. Tobacco tax would go up again, to almost $50 a carton, but that’s not even news any more. The budget also promises to extend mining exploration tax credits to cover costs of environmental studies and community consultation. An NDP government would no doubt have a closer look at the idea of more tax breaks for the mining industry, but the flurry of bills presented by their MLAs since February speaks to different priorities. NDP leader John Horgan and his team poured on the campaign reform, starting with their sixth annual “ban big money” proposal to eliminate corporate and union donations to political parties. They’d move elections to the fall, require a fall sitting of the legislature, register voters starting at age 16 to prepare them for voting at 18, and take political promotion out of government ads. Their latest bills say lots about process, but little about what the NDP would actually do in government. So far they’ve promised massively subsidized $10-a-day child care, a $15 minimum wage, and a

The legislature adjourned last week to prepare for the May 9 election. clean energy plan that consists mainly of doing what the government and BC Hydro are already doing, except of course building another dam. The NDP and Green Party both proposed endangered species legislation. The NDP version looks more like the standard fare of professional environmentalists, not surprising since it was sponsored by former Sierra Club B.C. president and current NDP MLA George Heyman. It would provide a legal means to stop almost any industrial project, which is emerging as a focus of today’s NDP. Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver’s version doesn’t seem quite as drastic, but it seeks to enshrine the “precautionary principle” to declare any risk, proven or not, to be enough to prevent development. Weaver frames the issue in apocalyptic fashion with a long-winded preamble that warns: “The entire world is in the midst of an extinction crisis and humans are the driving force.” The legislation the BC Liberals actually
passed speaks to their cynicism after four terms in power. A bill to repeal century-old racist contract terms changes nothing in the modern world, but the burst of positive Chinese-language media attention it received surely qualifies as a “quick win,” as ethnic appeals were once infamously described in the premier’s office. Legislation aimed at registering dog and cat breeders may never be implemented, even if the BC Liberals win again. How a new bureaucracy to register and monitor the commercial sale of pets fits with the governing party’s endless war on “red tape” has yet to be explained. The pet breeding industry wants “hobby breeders” exempted, which may lead to the undoing of the whole thing. But the legislation created a great photo-op, and cute dogs have been particular favourite of Clark in recent years. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

Albert’s almost fine romance “A fine romance with no kisses, a fine romance, my friend, this is.” Song by Lorenz Hart.
A
lbert ran into an old sweetheart the other day. It was in the local library and ‘old’ must have been the operative word. You see, Albert is almost as ancient as I am, and that’s archaic. But Albert became quite effusive when he burbled about the encounter because, he claimed, the event should never have happened; too many years, too many miles should have got in the way of anything that would have permitted that encounter to occur. Firstly, Albert was born just outside London, in faraway England and it was there ten or so years later that he found himself in school with a girl called Mary Steele and, he told me, he fell in love. “Did the lady reciprocate?” I asked. “I’m not sure she knew I existed,” Albert admitted. “I used to go and roller skate outside her house and, later, when we were eleven and went to our separate grammar schools, I use to ride my bike behind her bus.” Albert went all glassy eyed as he struggled to remember his frustrated romance of seventy years ago so I waited until he recovered sufficiently to tell me about the great romantic encounter. There was little else to do while I recovered from another
bout of shovelling snow. “It was the accent that was familiar,” Albert told me. ”We sort of collided and I apologized and she told me it was her fault. She couldn’t find her grand-daughter.” I nodded as Albert maundered on. “I made some inane comment about the illusiveness of grand-daughters and we started chatting and her accent really got to me. She sounded like some of my rellies back in England so I asked her where she was from and she told me she once lived in Sidcup, Kent, which is just outside Peter and, coincidentalWarland London ly, is where I grew up.” Albert became quite animated, for him anyway. “What was she doing here in Cranbrook?” I asked. The lady was apparently on a visit to her daughter who lives with her family right here in the city. “So was her name Mary?” I just had to know. “Well, there’s the problem,” replied the love-struck one. “I didn’t get round to asking her. But she sure looked like my Mary.” I tried to imagine a woman probably in her late eighties looking like the twelve year old girl that Albert thought he remembered. I could see that this romance wasn’t going anywhere for Albert. “Did you tell her that you came from this hiccup place, and went to school with her and chased her on your bike like some
Letters to the Editor
Galahad?” I asked but Albert frowned and explained, “But then the grand-daughter came along, a biggish woman about thirty.” Big and intimidating, I guessed but said, “Don’t tell me she looked like your lovely Mary,” I said but, by then, our conversation was dancing about on the edge of derangement. It seemed that the grand-daughter was not only plump, thirty and intimidating but she was coloured, black, dark skinned, whatever. “You mean really black or just swarthy?” I asked. “Darker than that.” “Maybe your Mary married a black soldier, a G.I., during the war. Anyway, how did you and the lady get on?” Albert wasn’t at all sure how he’d got on and told me sadly that the lady he thought was Mary was off back to jolly old England, soonest. “So what would you’ve done if she’d turned out to be your lost love Mary from Hiccup?” I asked. “Would you’ve ravished her on the spot there and then? Or maybe dropped gallantly to one knee, popped the question then tried not to look like a cripple when you tried to get up?” Albert admitted that he’d probably not have done a thing. ”The wife wouldn’t have approved,” he admitted. “She’s the jealous type. You got a beer?” “So that’s it, eh?” I said in sympathy while thinking, ‘A fine romance, snuffed out just like that.’

Ice finish season with losses to Hitmen Arch-rivals hand Ice ninth and tenth straight losses in final weekend action, end of hometown goalie Payton Lee’s WHL career BR AD MCLEOD
It was a festive atmosphere at Western Financial Place on Friday, but the party didn’t end in the Kootenay Ice dressing room. As part of their final home game, before puck drop, the Ice gave out their 2016-17 player awards and there were smiles all around. Unfortunately, after keeping the good vibes going into a hard-fought scoreless opening period, the team had a brief but significant collapse early in the second period and eventually lost 6-1. The next night in Calgary, the Ice’s final game of the year, was a much better effort, but ultimately just as disappointing, as they lost 4-1. Head coach Luke Pierce was upset that his team didn’t leave Cranbrook on a higher note. “It’s a disappointing way to end it ... we’ll look at the year as a whole after we get some time to reflect, but right now it just sucks where
we’re at,” Pierce said after Friday’s game.
“It was a good effort from our group, definitely a lot better for most of us than the night before. It was a good game to end the season off with, but we just came up short.” Vince Loschiavo “Our offense has gone dry [and] our ability to defend seems to be struggling. I think there are some positives where we’ve gone in the right direction, but right now, this isn’t fun. Max Patterson had the lone Ice goal, a power play marker at the end of the second period that was assisted by Colton Kroeker and Vince Loschiavo. The Hitmen had a number of players put up big offensive nights. Beck Malenstyn scored
three goals in a performance that included a breakaway shorthanded tally, defenceman Jake Bean had three assists, and Calgary’s leading scorer Matteo Gennaro had a goal and an assist. Payton Lee, who was named the team’s MVP in the pre-game festivities, made 32 saves on 38 shots. The Cranbrook native was also selected as the game’s first star. Heading to Calgary, Pierce had tempered expectations. “We’re not asking everyone to play the game of their life [on Saturday],” he said. “We’re just asking them to work and compete and show some character.” According to Loschiavo, even though the team didn’t win in Calgary, they achieved that goal. “It was a good effort from our group, definitely a lot better for most of us than the night before,” he said. “It was a good game to end the season off with.” Despite being outshot 11-2 in the opening

Nitros series tied 1-1 Kimberley Dynamiters and Beaver Valley Nitehawks in tight battle after first two games JOSH LOCKHART
The Kimberley Dynamiters opened the Kootenay Conference finals over the weekend with a split against the Beaver Valley Nitehawks. Game one was played on Friday, and heavily favoured the hometown Beaver Valley Nitehawks. The ‘Hawks scored two early goals and then a third on a deflated Nitros team with 2:21 left in the first. “We weren’t very good in the first and had a couple of unlucky bounces end up in our net,” said head coach and general manager Derek Stuart. “However, against a team like Beaver Valley, one bad period can cost you a game.” The Nitros would slow the Nitehawks’ relentless pace in the second before trading goals in the third.
Brandt Bertoia was the Nitros’ only goal scorer, as the team fell 4-1. Despite being pulled after Beaver Valley’s fourth goal, Cody Campbell made 32 saves and was named the away star of the game. In Saturday night’s sequel, even though the Nitehawks grabbed a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes, the Dynamiters played a strong opening period. “It was excellent at the start of the game,” Stuart said. “We got back to the mentality of focusing on your next shift, and nothing else. It was a big improvement [in] everything from the preparation, to the execution, to the communication.” The Nitros stormed back in the second. Nolan Kurylo scored on the power play to tie the game, and Nic
Herringer scored with 70 seconds left in the second to give the Dynamiters a 2-1 lead. Franco Colapaolo gave the Nitros a 3-1 lead as he potted an empty net goal, but the Nitehawks wouldn’t go away and scored with 31 seconds left. Their comeback fell short, however, and Campbell was once again named the away star of the night turning aside 26 of 28 shots in a 3-2 win. After the emotional win, the Dynamiters took Sunday as a long travel day. Speaking from the Kootenay Lake Ferry, Stuart explained that the team needed a rest. “We [wanted to] have a rest, because we really need to continue to use our speed,” he said. “[Beaver Valley] had a tough time handling our
speed and quickness, [so] if we can continue to do that on our big ice it will bode well for us. “We are excited to get home and be in front of our crowd and on our ice.” The last time the Nitehawks paid a visit to the Kimberley Civic Centre was on March 21, 2016, for game five of the Kootenay Conference finals where just over 1,100 fans watched the Nitros win 3-1 to advance to the KIJHL finals. Games three and four of the series are on Tuesday and Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Civic Centre, with game five, if needed, back in Fruitvale. MATCH STICKS: The Osoyoos Coyotes have a 2-0 series lead over the Chase Heat in the Okanagan/ Shuswap Conference Finals.
Loschiavo grabbed his 29th of the year to tie the game just before the second intermission. Unfortunately, even with a 28 save performance from Lee, Calgary managed to pop in a pair near the midway point of the third. Andrei Grishakov put a puck top corner for the 2-1 marker, and then Matt Dorsey poked in a messy goal to effectively sink the Ice at 3-1. While Kootenay fought to the end, pulling Lee to attempt a last minute comeback, Brady Reagan found the empty net and the Ice ended their season with a 10th straight loss. According to captain
Cale Fleury, even with the loss, the weekend was still special for Lee, who was playing his final two WHL games after 222 career games. “I think he was a little bit overwhelmed,” Fleury said. “It’s a lot of time in this league. I think he played 12,000 minutes, which is pretty crazy. “It’s a big part of his life and he got pretty emotional at the end of the game.” Loschiavo hopes the team learned a lot from having Lee around. “He had a huge impact [and] it was really good for our younger players, including me, to see how hard that guy worked every night,” Lo-
schiavo said. “He left it all out there and he had an unbelievable career.” For the most part thougm the Kootenay Ice players’ thoughts have already turned to next season and they believe the team is close to being competitive again. “I think we have a good core right now,” Fleury said. “It’ll help out next year, getting some good young talent and maybe another European coming in. “I [hope we] get back in the playoffs [next year].” The Ice finished in last place in the WHL this season with a 14-4610-2 record.

Chuck Berry: 1926-2017 Ashley Wadhwani Black Press
Legendary rock musician Chuck Berry has died at the age of 90. St. Charles Police in Missouri issued a release saying they were called to a medical emergency Saturday, where Berry was found unresponsive. He could not be revived and was pronounced dead around 1:30 p.m. Berry’s core repertoire was some three dozen songs, his influence incalculable, from the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to virtually
any group from garage band to arena act that called itself rock ‘n roll. While Elvis Presley gave rock its libidinous, hip-shaking image, Berry was the auteur, setting the template for a new sound and way of life. Well before the rise of Bob Dylan, Berry wedded social commentary to the beat and rush of popular music. “He was singing good lyrics, and intelligent lyrics, in the ‘50s when people were singing, “Oh, baby, I love you so,’” John Lennon once observed.

Dear Annie by Annie Lane
putting on shoes and socks Dear Annie: Is there a right order and a wrong order for putting on one’s shoes and socks? I find that on most days, I put on both socks and then both shoes. The other day, I put on one sock and one shoe and then the other sock and other shoe. I remember a scene on the old TV show “All in the Family” in which Archie Bunker and Meathead were getting ready to go out. Archie noticed that Meathead had put on one sock and one shoe, and Archie asked him what he was doing. Why didn’t he put on both socks first and then the shoes? “I like to take care of one foot at a time,” Meathead says. It was really funny. (The clip is available on YouTube, titled “Archie Bunker -- A Sock And A Sock And A Shoe And A Shoe!”) But I am wondering whether any polling company has ever done a survey of how people put on their shoes and socks. -- Curious in Klamath Falls Dear Curious: Don’t know of any survey, but I suspect that most people dress in the order Archie does. In my view, as long as each shoe ends up on its correct foot, you’re doing all right. However, if any of my readers feel strongly about the one-sock-one-shoe method, I’d love to hear from you. Dear Annie: I’ve wanted to write to you for a long time. I want to tell you my story. I am a 52-year-old man. I have never married and have never even been in a serious relationship. In my late teens, I was put in the position of being caretaker to two family members who were unable to take care of themselves. When I was in my 20s, I made two attempts at looking for love, and both times ended with my getting hurt very badly. After that, I realized I had too much baggage to ever appeal to a woman, so I stopped looking and settled in to my role as family caretaker. The years -- and the decades -- went by. About four years ago, both family members whom I was caring for died within only a few months of each other, and I am alone. I have thought about looking for love again, but I don’t even know how to go about it anymore. So I am resigned to being alone for the rest of my life. I have been in and out of therapy over the years and been on and off antidepressants. Nothing has really helped. I have gotten involved with a couple of community groups over the years but haven’t really made any close friends. I guess I’m not really writing for advice; it’s too late for that. I am writing to tell people to try not to be so judgmental about the socially incompetent guy over there who often keeps to himself. You don’t know his story, and he might be really nice if you took the time to get to know him. -- Lonesome Dear Lonesome: I am so sorry for the loss of your loved ones. Bless you for taking care of them for so long. I’m sure they appreciated it. But the fact is that it’s not too late for advice unless you want it to be. So I’m giving you some anyway. You are only 52 years old. You still have decades of life that can be full of love if you so choose. Don’t look for someone to blame for your current state. Instead, focus on the present and what you can do now. Sign up for online dating sites, and don’t let the sting of one rejection -- or even 10 -- paralyze you. There is a woman who will love the way you’re “different.” Send your questions for Annie Lane to dearannie@creators.com. It is with great sadness and tremendous loss that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother at the age of 89, at home with family by her side. Marianne was born in Revelstoke, BC on April 1, 1927 to parents Evelyn Evans (nee Holmstrom) and Russell Evans of Beaton, BC, the 6th of 9 children. She was a gifted and beautiful child who was always at the top of her class, and as the fastest runner she was the person sent for the nurse when anyone was in need. Marianne was an intelligent woman who longed for university and higher learning, history being her subject of choice. Her desire to do her best was a strong part of her personality and work ethic. She worked hard at every job, her favourite being an assistant in a photography studio. She was socially and politically active. She volunteered for the Canadian Mental Health Association, Scouts Canada, and campaigned for numerous charities. She was very involved in BC politics in the 60’s and 70’s becoming good friends with several of the province’s leaders. She was often asked to run for office, but the spotlight was never her favourite place. She always said if there were 2 other people in the room she couldn’t shut up and if there were more than 3 that she couldn’t open her mouth, but behind the scenes her contributions were significant. As a mother of 5, she was tireless when it came to caring for her family. She kept the house and gardens in pristine shape. Her cooking skills led her to work in many restaurants and dining rooms in BC and Alberta and she never served anything less than delicious. She was a talented and meticulous knitter and crocheted heirloom pieces. She was “Mom” to her kid’s friends and many others she met along the way. Marianne was fun loving and enjoyed a good prank or a bit of silliness. She was always ready with a smile or a kind word. She taught her kids to believe that as a society we are only as strong as the weakest of us. She was thoughtful and insightful and to all that knew her she was elegant, a “true lady”. Marianne was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and lupus in the 90’s and later developed a movement disorder and recently pancreatic cancer. This made the last years of her life very hard and physically painful, but she never gave up and always believed in a positive future. She often talked about dancing on her 100th birthday and we are sure she will kick up her heals in heaven with the Lord by her side. She will be able to dance free of pain and sickness, long into the wee hours of the morning. Marianne is survived by her children Jak (Tammy) and family, Bill (Melanie), Valerie (Keith) and Wendy; her grandsons Ben and Braden and her brother Bennett. She was predeceased by her oldest son Monty, her husband Bill, her brothers Richard, George and Bill, her sisters Janey, Olive, Min and Blenda and her parents Evelyn and Russell Evans. Mom, your kind and generous spirit make us all want to be better people. You will be missed more than words can express and your legacy of caring will live on. If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever. “If flowers grow in heaven, Lord, then pick a bunch for me. Then place them in my mother’s arms and tell her they’re from me. Tell her that I love and miss her and when she turns to smile, place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for awhile.” “If tears could build a stairway, and memories a lane, I’d walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.”
