remier Christy Clark said she hadn’t seen the little web attack ad that was released a couple of weeks ago by the B.C. Federation of Labour.
The “Game Over” spot imitates an early “Super Mario” video game, with a pixilated Clark in a pink hard hat hopping from photo op to photo op, collecting points for closing a school and understaffing a seniors’ care home. The school closing is a cheap shot,

but the latter scenario hit home. We’ve heard the horror stories for years, with contract operators laying off all their staff to reincorporate or sell, elderly residents limited to one bath per week, drugs over-used to quiet residents, and injuries to caregivers from lifting frail elderly people. With those working conditions, even keeping the staff that are
Hugs: Hugs and appreciation to Holly for the compassion and faith you showed during those long nights and the continued prayers you generously offered. God bless you and thanks. Thank you to Olivia from the discharge planning team for working so quickly and efficiently in getting my Mom home with such speed and thoroughness. Thank you Jo-ann for your thoroughness and care for my Mom. Hugs: HUGS, LOVE and GRATITUDE to Ardeth, the occupational therapist from the home health team in the Cranbrook hospital. You are simply an angel Ardeth. I only met you and yet you hold a deep place in my heart for your warmth, kindness and sincerity. I will never forget your genuine kindness or your gift of heart in such a difficult time. I wish you the best life can possibly offer all the days of your life. Much love and Thank you! system” to make sure the money goes to patients, not profits. The goal is to reach an average 3.3 hours per resident day from care assistants, physiotherapists and nurses, a goal recommended to the health ministry back in 2009. Seniors’ Advocate Isobel Mackenzie, who has proven to be a tough critic despite being Lake’s appointee, summed up the chang-
es from a resident’s point of view. “It could mean that I can go to the bathroom within 15 minutes of asking, instead of 45.” Mackenzie said. “It might mean I can ask for a bath on Tuesday and get one, even though I had one on Saturday. It might mean I can get the aide to walk me to the dining room using my walker, rather than put me in a wheelchair, be-
cause that’s the faster way to get me there.” I gave NDP health critic Judy Darcy a hard time last week for putting union spin ahead of the public interest, but this time she’s on the mark. Darcy made short work of Lake’s claim that this extra funding had to wait for a new health transfer deal with Ottawa. Darcy noted that those transfers have

Slugs: A correcting slug to the person who defended the snow removal work performed by the town of Cranbrook. Although your cause is noble, comrade, you should perhaps follow your own advice and put yourself in the shoes of pedestrians who have been forced to walk in the streets because the sidewalks were, and some still are, snowbanks. The last “snowbank” sent me to the hospital, and thank God my free hand broke my fall or it could have been worse. If you would have tried those sidewalks, you might understand at least some of those complaints! Hugs: A big “HUG” to New Energy Wellness Spa for giving me a life changing experience indeed! funded has been difficult. An additional $500 million was tucked into the BC Liberals’ election budget in February, and retiring Health Minister Terry Lake rolled out the results last week. Hugs: Big Hugs to the security staff at the Tom Cochrane concert. Having recently had a knee replacement I didn’t think I could make it through the whole concert. However, being able to use the elevator, the downstairs washroom, having an extra chair and aisle room to rest my leg, I was able to enjoy the whole concert which was AWESOME! increased six per cent each year since Paul Martin was prime minister, while B.C. governments boasted of bending down the “cost curve” of health care. And let the record show that the Justin Trudeau government did something right. It upheld the former Harper government’s decision to reduce that unsustainable six-percent figure, while adding new money tied to home care. With seniors living longer and the baby boom starting to retire and head west, home care is the only way B.C. will survive financially. Mackenzie had more good news. About 85 per cent of people aged 85 and up still live independently in B.C. About half of them are supported at home despite complex needs that qualify them for residential care. The new plan “recognizes that many of the family caregivers caring for these weak seniors are stretched to the breaking point, and they need more relief to keep their loved one at home,” she said. Meanwhile, the “rural paramedicine” program is extending to 70 communities, with part-time paramedics getting stable work doing home “wellness checks” to prevent emergencies. They also lead walking groups for frail seniors who wouldn’t otherwise venture out for risk of injury. Slowly, the postwar model of acute hospital care recedes, and just in time. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

An agricultural dream becomes reality In Gaëtane Carignan
2 0 0 3 , when applying to do a graduate degree in agriculture, I described my future aspirations to my soon-to-be supervising professor. My goal was to found an agricultural learning centre, practicing sustainable production methods and teaching others how to do the same. I had no idea how I was going to make it happen, but that was the big dream. There were many times when the dream seemed impossibly far away. Until now, my family’s agricultural background stopped at my grandparents, who all farmed cattle and grew grain in southern Saskatchewan. As young adults my parents moved to Michel/Natal, and later to Fernie, to work in logging and raise a family. They purchased an acreage in the

small business has been invaluable to me. Additionally, the farm will require a level of physical effort I have not sustained for more than a decade, and no number of pilates videos will fully prepare me when the gardening season hits. However, even with these challenges, this will be work that feeds me, my family, and my community on so many levels. I will be using my energy, creativity, and passion for something beneficial to my community, the Earth, and my young child. I am grateful that she will grow, play and learn in a rich environment, connected to the seasons, to good food and to family. This is the first year Naturaleza Ag will be producing vegetables to sell, starting at Fernie’s Mountain Market on Sundays, as well as other local farmers’ markets. As our productionskills grow, we will offer greens and herbs to local restaurants, and eventually start a community supported agriculture (CSA) box program, where customers pre-pay, and we commit to providing delicious, local, nutritious farm produce each week for 10 to 12 weeks during the growing season. As part of the permaculture-
inspired design, my family and I are developing the property in phases. In addition to our vegetable garden, we will design a perennial food forest to grow berries, medicinal plants, herbs, and some hardy fruit trees. We will integrate animals into the system, such as broiler chickens, pastured pigs, and rabbits. Eventually, we will be building a three-season, passive-solar greenhouse to extend our short season, and give more options for what we can grow in this cold climate. The vegetable gardens will expand to about 1 acre of production. This may not sound like much, but some successful farm business models, including one from Kelowna, and another from Quebec, demonstrate that if you get the design right and prioritize the most important elements, tools and infrastructure, small farms can be incredibly productive and economically viable. I will apply and adapt their lessons, and those of other mentors, to the Elk Valley context to grow local food, and help to create a more connected, resilient, foodsecure community. To connect with us, please visit our website NaturalezaAg.com or follow us on Facebook.

Is this the demise of the honeybee? Bees flitting from one newly sprouted flower to another as they collect pollen is one of the more common sights of the spring. Honeybees are content to buzz between plants for hours. But in recent years the honeybee population has declined considerably, and scientists and environmentalists continue to study and debate why bees seem to be dying out. Although bees are best known for their honey production, their symbiotic relationship with nature goes much further. Honeybees are instrumental in transferring pollen from plant to plant, which helps to foster new life for many agricultural species. In addition to wild flowers and other plants, bees pollinate many of the crops that end up as food on dinner tables across the globe. Bees help pollinate more than 90 commercially grown field crops, citrus and other fruit crops, vegetables and nut crops. Without these insects, crop yields would decrease dramatically, and some foods may cease to exist. Without bees, food production would diminish and the prices of produce would skyrocket. Commercial beekeepers in the United States have reported deaths of tens of thousands of honeybee colonies. Ninety percent of wild bee

Honeybees pollinate many of the world’s plants. But their numbers are on the decline, and the environmental impact of that decline is significant. populations in the United States have disappeared, according to Target Health, Inc. In the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, bee species have declined considerably, and some have even become extinct. Since 2006, millions of honeybees have died off due to a phenomenon called Colony Collapse Disorder, or CCD. CCD refers to the absence of adult honeybees in a colony with few or no adults remaining. Worker bees simply disappear, leaving behind the queen and vulnerable developing young. Bees are not usually known to leave the hive unguarded. While similar disappearances have been documented in the
last 100 years, those incidences have grown considerably in recent years. Officials in the United States Department of Agriculture and the Environmental Protection Agency have not been able to determine why the honeybee population has undergone such a steep decline, though some believe that a complex combination of factors, including parasites, lack of genetic diversity, poor nutrition, and pesticides, could be responsible. Examination of dead bees has found residues of more than 100 chemicals, insecticides and pesticides, including some used to control parasites, in bee hives. Other factors that
come into play involve climate changes that affect wildflower production. Without wildflowers, bees have no sources of food. Rainy, wet or overly dry weather can wreak havoc on the landscape, resulting in fewer flowers and, as a result, a smaller bee population. Scientists are still studying the situation and working toward a solution to restore the honeybee population. Individuals can do their part by keeping plenty of blooming flowers in their yards and never killing honeybees found on their property. Disturbing an established hive can result in the bees abandoning their work, leading to even greater losses.

Cutter Ranch making its mark across B.C.
Jody Jacob A family-owned and operated East Kootenay ranch is growing its e-commerce capabilities to meet demands of a rapidly growing clientele. Cutter Ranch, which produces highquality, ethicallyraised pork, lamb, poultry, and beef products is steadily expanding its consumer base — from restaurants and specialty markets to families and individuals — throughout B.C. and from Alberta. Owners of Cutter Ranch Sacha Bentall and Tyler McNaughton come by farming honestly. Both raised on Canadian family ranches, they have deep-rooted knowledge of where food comes from and what it takes to deliver it to the highest of stan-
dards. They believe this should be done through hard work, transparency, knowledge, and attention. Cutter Ranch, which was incorporated in 2008 and relocated from the B.C. Interior to Fort Steele in 2012, has significantly grown over the last few years in both offerings and markets. “We started this whole thing because we want to make great food available that people can trust,” said McNaughton. “We’re about the entire process. We don’t think of our animals in terms of units of production; we don’t treat them as objects. We are dealing with Mother Nature, and we are very mindful of the entire process. Our customers know when they purchase meat from us the

exceptional product. We’re finding this is becoming important to more people.” “Our animals are raised year-round in pastures with ample space to graze and free access to clean water,” adds Bentall. “We work very hard to ensure a low-stress environment, not only to maintain a quality of meat, but to respect the expectations and values of our consumers and ourselves.” Annually, Cutter
Ranch provides their meat to an upwards of 200 families, chefs, restaurants, and others in the food service industry. Farmer’s markets are also becoming a larger part of their business. Cutter Ranch is a vendor at four farmer’s markets in the East Kootenay region; McNaughton said they find it an increasingly viable way to promote their products and their practices, as well as increase sales.
To better reflect Cutter Ranch’s offerings, products and significant growth over the last few years, the business rebranded and launched a new website featuring an e-commerce store where customers, chefs, restaurants, specialty markets and others in the food service industry can easily order and purchase their meat products. “Ranching is complex and certainly
technology plays an increasing role, from tracking and breeding the animals to selling them,” said Bentall. “But our concept remains simple: from the farm to your fork, everything is done to the highest of standards with the utmost care. Decisions are made with the goal of honouring nature and delivering a nourishing product free of manipulations. It’s honest. It’s real. It’s where food comes from.”

Cranbrook Multi-Club Holds That’s Just Speak-off Yearly Sheep Weigh-in How We Some exciting activities going on at the Cranbrook 4H MultiClub. On the weekend of Feb. 25 and 26, we started at one of the family farms learning sheep husbandry and vaccinated our project lambs. We followed this up with our district weigh-in. We have five members in our sheep club this year. The weigh-in went smoothly.
Sunday was our club speak off — the speeches were all well put together with a wide range of topics. Everyone did a great job. Our top two seniors were Colby Holt with his speech on living life and Olivia Murdoch with her speech on Siblings. Our top two Junior speakers were Ava Murdoch with her speech on Rats and Emily Murdoch with her speech on Global warming and World Hunger. The top two seniors and top

Calling all fiddlers to annual Creston weekend workshop Creston Valley Advance Registration is now open for the second annual Creston Weekend Fiddle Workshop in May. The weekend will be a fun-filled fiddling frenzy and is open to students of all levels. Workshop director Velle HuscroftWeitman believes the weekend will provide participants with a real sense of musical community and will inspire a new generation of fiddlers as well as guiding seasoned musicians to the next level of playing and performing “There are so many different styles of fiddle music across the country, and I’ve tried to bring together a sampling of those styles for the workshop,” said Huscroft-Weitman. This year’s lineup includes Angus MacDonald, Chelsea Sleep and Jane Russell.
MacDonald is a Nova Scotian-style fiddler, well versed in Scottish and Irish music. He is currently finishing his third year of a jazz degree at Saint Francis Xavier University. Born and bred on the Sunshine Coast, Sleep has performed all over Canada with Oliver Schroer’s ensemble, The Twisted String. She is also the musical director for Bad to the Bow Youth Fiddlers. Classically trained, Russell has always found ways to incorporate folk music into her playing. She connected with Duncan Cameron and formed the group Fagroongala, which specialized in Irish and French Canadian music and then formed Bogbrans with her husband, Eamonn Reil. As well as camp director, HuscroftWeitman is also taking on the role of instruc-

Having performed across Canada, the US and the UK, and having been a guest instructor at other fiddle workshops, she now runs a successful violin program in Creston called Velvet Strings. She also recently recorded her first album with a ten-piece band. The weekend will include a showcase
concert on Friday night where all four instructors and special guests will take to the stage. It’s a chance for participants and the public to witness different styles of fiddling. “While the concert is part of the camp, it is open to anyone who wants to listen to great music,” said Huscroft-Weitman. “I encourage both musi-

Saturday’s urban barn dance with professional caller Karen Dignan is also open to the public. “It’s important for students to recognize that the waltzes, jigs and reels they learn were played for the purpose of dancing. To best understand the nuances of the music, I think students should take part so they can see the time signatures in action. But I also encourage the public to come and have fun. This is an opportunity to take part in something different and
cians and music lovers to come and experience some world-class playing.” On Saturday, students will be separated into three levels – beginner, intermediate and advance – so that they get a chance to touch base with all instructors, no matter their skill level. “The last class on Saturday will then be specific to style, rather than ability, so there is another chance for students to learn more about certain genres of music,” said Huscroft-Weitman.
exciting.” Participants are invited to take part in Sunday’s fiddle orchestra, where all ages and abilities learn songs together and perform as a collective. “I want it to feel like a traditional ceilidh – or kitchen party – where musicians are learning from each other and encouraging each other,” said HuscroftWeitman. “By playing music we unlock the secrets of expressing ourselves, but by playing music together we connect to other human beings in amazing ways.” The Creston Weekend Fiddle Workshop will run from May 1214. Weekend passes, including the concert and dance, are $150. Additional tickets for the concert and the dance are $10 per event. More information and registration forms for the workshop can be found at www. velle.ca. Huscroft-Weitman can be reached at velvetstrings@gmail. com.

Toyota RAV4
Late arriving hyrid joins the line-up Five years into its fourth generation and Toyota’s compact sport ute remains as popular as ever. And it’s likely to stay there for a while with the all-wheel-drive RAV4 Hybrid. That model was part of a recent refresh that included revised sheetmetal and interior adjustments and an extension in the
number of trim levels. Unchanged was the 2.5-litre fourcylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission for the gas-only version, while the Hybrid uses a similar 2.5 engine connected to a continuously variable transmission plus two electric motors. The gasoline RAV4’s optional all-wheel-drive
has a “Lock” mode keeps half the power going to the rear wheels as long as you’re driving slower that 40 km-h. Sport mode allows wider transfer of torque between the front and rear wheels (as much as half to the rear) than the Auto mode. The RAV4’s interior is awash with “soft-touch” materials and
silver trim bits. There’s also a 6.1-inch screen that doubles as a monitor for the back-up camera, which is also standard. • Base price (incl. destination): $29,100; $36,200, Hybrid • Type: Four-door sportutility vehicle • Engine (h.p.): 2.5-litre I-4 (176); 2.5-litre I-4 with two elec-

$2 million fund offered to keep rural teachers
Tom Fletcher Black Press A $2 million fund for school districts to hire and hold onto teachers at rural B.C. schools won’t be
enough to stop an exodus to urban schools as thousands of new positions are opened across the province, the NDP education critic predicts.
Announcing the new fund Tuesday, Education Minister Mike Bernier acknowledged that attracting and keeping teachers at rural schools is difficult
at the best of times. The challenge is increased as the province moves to add new positions to meet the terms of a Supreme Court of Canada ruling that re-

quires a return to class size formulas removed in 2002. The province has already committed $100 million to add teachers across 60 school districts, and the B.C. Teachers’ Federation has voted overwhelmingly to accept a new proposal to meet the terms of the court ruling. “We’ve got chaos about to emerge, with teachers migrating from rural areas to cities,” NDP education critic Rob Fleming said after the announcement.
Bernier said the fund will provide incentives designed to attract teachers-on-call in the Lower Mainland to take up full-time positions in the rest of the province. It’s the second year of a provincial rural schools fund that was targeted to schools set to close last spring. Districts are again preparing their budgets and deciding which rural schools can be kept open. The fund created last June was $2.7 million, targeted to dis-
tricts were school closures were imminent due to low enrolment. They included Okanagan-Similkameen, Quesnel, Kootenay Lake, Bulkley Valley, Okanagan Skaha and Campbell River. At that time, Boundary-Similkameen MLA Linda Larson was appointed parliamentary secretary for rural schools and began talks to develop a strategy. That strategy is not yet complete, Larson said Tuesday, as meetings with two more districts need to be held.
Two-vehicle accident claims life of Baynes Lake woman At about 12:30 p.m., Friday afternoon, March 10, Cranbrook RCMP and East Kootenay Traffic Services responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 3/93 near Wardner, east of Cranbrook. The accident occurred when a 2016 blue Honda Pilot and a 2012 grey Dodge Caravan collided headon. The 36-year-old female driver of the Honda sustained serious injuries, and was transported to East Kootenay Regional Hospital. The accident claimed the life of a 44-year-old woman from Baynes Lake, who was driving the Caravan. The highway was closed for ap-
proximately five hours, as police and a Collision Reconstructionalist investigated the accident. Anyone who may have witnessed the actual collision or saw either vehicle prior to the accident is asked to contact East Kootenay Traffic Services at 250-420-4244. The name of the deceased is being withheld at this time while the investigation continues. Police would like to remind everyone that winter driving conditions continue throughout the East Kootenay region. Motorists should check www.drivebca.ca for road conditions and closures before heading out on the highways, and allow themselves extra time to arrive safely.

“With six reporters in these communities, our news gathering operation is second to none, and access to both our online product and print product will be easier than ever.” “We’re excited to be offering a full complement of digital services available to our advertisers,” added Publisher Zena Williams. “Cranbrook and Kimberley are vibrant communities and we are looking forward to working with the many community organizations and individuals who are dedicated to improving the quality of life and developing commerce in the region” Blair said. The expansion of our

Adjustments to the publication schedule will ensure a full and comprehensive read, three times a week, that reflects the community. At the heart of the Black Press operation in the Kootenays is the press, which operates out of the Townsman on Cranbrook Street. The press is also being expanded, to provide more pages, more colour, and more speed to hit the streets even faster.

B.C. government funding $40,000 to feed wildlife Tre vor C r awl e y
With one of the harshest winters in recent memory, the government has stepped up with $40,000 that will be given to a wildlife conservation organization for an elk feeding program. The Kootenay Wildlife Heritage Fund (KWHF) will use the funding to purchase hay which will be distributed in strategic locations throughout the region. The feeding program will complement what volunteers are already doing and is supported by the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. “I have hunted here for almost 25 years and I know our elk and deer numbers are down, said Kootenay
East MLA Bill Bennett. “With ungulate populations already weakened by too many predators, we need to do everything we can to hold on to the elk and deer that are struggling. Bennett says that government is working closely with the BC Wildlife Federation on an improved wildlife management model, along with local stakeholders, hunters and conservationists. “Hunters and others who love wildlife can help professional wildlife managers make the most effective decisions and frankly, that doesn’t always mean closing areas and making parks, said Carmen Purdy, the president of the KWHF.

More Thyroid
In my last article I talked about testing that is helpful in diagnosing hypothyroidism (low thyroid). The symptoms of hypothyroidism include fatigue (even after a long sleep), depression, dry skin, low libido, sore muscles and joints and decreased motivation (among many others).
producing too much cortisol. Over time, if balance is not found, the adrenal get weak, produce less cortisol and begin to under function. This directly effects the thyroid because in order for your thyroid hormone to work effectively, there must be healthy levels of cortisol present.
Testing for ferritin (the storage form of iron), Free T3 (the active form of thyroid hormone) and Free T4 (the storage and transport form of thyroid hormone) can be very helpful. TSH is the most common test used to identify hypothyroidism and it will often be in the normal range even if your thyroid is not working properly.
Testing your adrenals is best done using what is called a “Four Point Saliva Test.” This test requires you collect four samples of your saliva over a 24 hour period. Cortisol fluctuates throughout the day and is highest in the morning and lowest at night. Knowing your cortisol levels at various points throughout the day is essential for proper treatment. More often, cortisol testing is done with one test taken during the day, limiting the ability for the test to pick up abnormalities.
The health of your thyroid and its ability to produce energy in your cells is directly related to the health of your adrenal glands. The adrenals are small glands that sit on top of each or your kidneys and produce cortisol. Cortisol is crucial for energy and your ability to tolerate stress.
The thyroid and adrenal glands are work together to help you feel energetic and healthy. A problem with one usually leads to a problem with the When you are stressed other and both must be and wound up or wired, addressed to achieve your adrenals are usually optimal results.

New passing lane to be built between Cranbrook, Fernie B a r ry Co u lt e r
Traffic will flow just a little easier between Cranbrook and Fernie, with the construction of another passing lane. The B.C. Ministry of Transportation and In-
frastructure announced Monday that an additional eastbound passing lane will be constructed along Highway 3 west of Fernie, adding to the half dozen already in place between
the two towns. “With the growth of industrial traffic in this area, motorists need a safe place to pass slower-moving and commercial vehicles,” said Minister of Transporta-
tion and Infrastructure Todd Stone in a press release. “Adding more passing lanes on Highway 3 from Cranbrook to Fernie and through the Elk Valley is a key priority in B.C. on the
Move, the province’s 10-year transportation plan.” The new eastboundpassing lane will be approximately two kilometres long and will be constructed just east of
IT’S NOT JUST THE BEST OF THE BEST. IT’S THE BEST OF THE BEST OF THE BEST. First it was voted AJAC’s Best New Small Utility Vehicle. Now, the 2017 Subaru Forester has taken home the title of Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year, and it’s easy to see why. With its versatile cargo compartment, spacious passenger cabin, available EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology*, and impressive Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time All-Wheel drive, the Forester’s newest title is just another reason to take one out for a test drive.

the intersection of Highway 3 and Galloway Road, approximately 45 kilometres west of Fernie. The contract has been awarded to Copcan Civil Ltd of Nanaimo and is valued at $3.3 million. “The two-kilometre passing lane along the Crowsnest Highway east of Galloway will be a welcome addition for local residents and industry,” said MLA for Kootenay East Bill Bennett. “This passing lane is the result of discussions with the Highway 3 Mayors’ and Chairs’ Coalition and we’re committed to these upgrades and increasing
capacity along Highway 3.” “Providing safe highway travel along the Highway 3 corridor is a top priority for the Highway 3 Mayors’ and Chairs’ Coalition,” said Lawrence Chernoff, mayor of Castlegar and chair of the Highway 3 Mayors’ and Chairs’ Coalition. “The coalition extends our appreciation to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for their ongoing commitment and support of our goals.” The press release work is expected to begin this spring and wrap up in the summer.
Clark aims to force donation disclosure
Tom Fletcher Black Press Opposition members were repeatedly ruled out of order in the B.C. legislature Monday as they demanded the BC Liberal government reform the province’s campaign finance laws by banning “big money” donations from corporations and unions. Premier Christy Clark revealed her own version of reform instead, legislation to force all parties to disclose donations within two weeks of receiving them, as the BC Liberal Party started doing in January. “In my view this should happen before the next election,” Clark said, suggesting that Election Act amendments introduced Monday may be pushed through before the legislature adjourns at the end of this week. NDP leader John Horgan and other opposition members were cut off by Speaker Linda Reid as they tried to press the government to turn off the corporate donation taps that helped the BC Liberal Party collect $12 million last year. He later described the “sad spectacle” of watching Reid apparently taking signals from BC Liberal house leader Mike de Jong about what questions should be accepted. “The premier chose to get up on occasion, chose to stay down on occasion,” Horgan said. Clark also proposed an independent committee to review B.C.’s election financing rules, the last in Canada where unlimited donations are accepted from corporations, unions and foreign sources. Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver said there has been a series of independent recommendations, from the Information and Privacy Commissioner and a legislature committee, and all have been ignored by the BC Liberal government. “We don’t need that,” Weaver said. “We know what the problem is.” Clark said the independent panel could review the NDP and Green proposals and others, reviewing the system every two elections, similar to the legislated review of electoral boundaries.

Raymond Harry Van Steinburg 1923 - 2017
Raymond Harry Van Steinburg, 94, of Wycliffe, British Columbia peacefully passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. Ray is survived by his children, 5 grandsons and 2 great-grandchildren. Ray was born near Moosomin, Saskatchewan in 1923, but his family moved to the Kootenay Lake area while he was still young. Ray maintained a mine engine from the age of 14 and then later in his teens worked on and helped manage a dairy before joining the Canadian Armed Forces to fight in World War II. During the war he drove a wrecker all over Europe helping the troops keep moving, often crossing into enemy territory to collect Allied transports and other vehicles. When the war ended he volunteered to stay and help clean up to help our European allies get back on their feet and carry on after the war. Ray returned to Kimberley, British Columbia after the war and worked at Cominco for a short time before taking over a taxi stand and grew it to be a thriving business in a post-war time when it was difficult to get cars for personal use. He was the first to bring 2-way radios into the Kootenays as a way to better serve his customers. Ray married Edythe Mae Derricott in 1951 and later that year they moved to Wycliffe where they started a dairy and egg business. In 1959 they sold the dairy cattle and started buying Horned Hereford beef cattle. Together they built Pine Butte Ranch. Ray was incredibly active in the ranching community serving on boards and committees for several decades in nearly every area of the beef industry and land stewardship. He was presented dozens of awards and citations in appreciation of his work locally, nationally and even internationally. Not one to be told how (or when) to live his life by doctors, Ray exceeded medical expectations many times throughout his life. On February 9th he was told that he only had 3-4 days to live due to cancer complications. He proudly outlived this last prediction by 20 days. A gathering will be held to celebrate Ray’s life in the spring when it is easier for friends and family to travel and calving season is over … for Ray, the ranch always came first. Memorial donations may be made in Ray’s name to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital.
Warron Hastings Bridger July 14, 1936 March 9, 2017
The valley has lost another son. Long time valley resident, Warron Hastings Bridger, passed away on March 9, 2017 in Cranbrook, B.C. Warron was born at the family home in Windermere to Jack and Violet Bridger on July 14, 1936. Warron had to go out to work at a young age, finding employment around the valley at sawmills, lumber camps, and even as a diamond driller, until one day the Navy Recruiter came to town. “Join the Navy and see the world!” Join he did, and see the world he did. After his hitch in the Navy, Warron started his apprenticeship as a carpenter in Vancouver, but the valley called him back. He loaded up his small family and moved to Kimberley. He finished his apprenticeship with Fabro Brothers, and soon after Bridger Construction was formed, with many new homes built in Kimberley and area. He finished his working career with the City of Kimberley as a Building Inspector, along with positions in other departments. A simple, benevolent, charitable, and generous man, he was most happy when giving of his time to his family, friends, and community. He was a master woodworker whose craft adorns many homes on multiple continents and were also donated to charitable causes. Warron participated in many activities in his younger years: coaching boys’ hockey, the Dynamiters, the Legion, the Masonic Lodge, and the Julyfest. He loved the outdoors - hunting and searching for arrowheads and other early artifacts. While traveling around, he always kept an eye out for the perfect piece of land on a lake, and finally he found Lazy Lake. He worked hard to make the property what it is today, always striving to make it the best for family and friends to enjoy. His goal was to create a lasting legacy for present and future generations of the Bridger family. His second goal was to make his mom’s writings into a book as a memorial to her life. He gathered together all her paperwork, had it edited and published in The Windermere I Knew, Violet’s Story in 2002. His third goal achieved was family history taking Bridger genealogy back to the 15th century. In 2015 he published the family history along with his personal stories. Warron was predeceased by his mother Violet (Bridger) Andrews, father Jack Bridger, brothers Frank Bridger, Jack Bridger, and Ralph Andrews, and four great-grandbabies. Warron leaves behind his wife Helen; son Morgan J. Bridger, Kimberley, BC; daughters Tara Deleeuw (Trent), Bashaw, AB; Nancy Carson (Tony) Port Coquitlam, BC; step-children Darren Provost (Debbie), Chilliwack, BC; Dawn Meier (Kim), Kelowna, BC; Debbie Byman (Ron), Prince George, BC; many grandchildren and greatgrandbabies, very special nieces, cousins, best buddy/ cousin Tom Richardson, and his first wife Anne Coats. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Kootenay Wildlife Heritage Fund, P.O. Box 100, Kimberley, B.C. V1A 2Y5, would be appreciated. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Travis Patrick McNeill 1995 – 2017 It is with profound sadness to be announcing the passing of our beloved son Travis Patrick McNeill at such a young age of 21.
She was loved and will be missed by many. A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 17, 2017 at 1:00 pm at the Kimberley United Church, 10 Boundary St. Kimberley, BC. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Jessie can be made to the: Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon or The Kidney Foundation of Canada.
Travis passed away in Cranbrook, BC at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in the ICU with his family holding his hand and standing by his side on February 26, 2017. Travis blessed his parents at 6:17 am on November 3, 1995 by making his arrival at the Cranbrook Regional Hospital. Travis’ parents Brenda McNeill-Mason and Patrick McNeill were over the moon with excitement as Travis was born on his older brother Tyler Mason’s birthday. Travis’ older sister was equally excited to have two little brothers born on the same day – November 3rd. Travis lived most of his short life in Jaffray, BC where he became well known in the small community – where if needed, they were there to lend a hand. We will always miss Travis’ infectious smile that he always had, no matter the kind of day he was having. That smile that lit up a room! We will never forget the belly roar of laughs that you belted out - and everyone would laugh along with you, sometimes not even knowing what we were laughing about! With all Travis’ curves life has thrown him, he was still the bravest, happiest young man ever. His bravery of water still makes me smile. We would put on your life jacket on at the beach and you would go into the water bobbing and tipping over but never showing any fear - that’s our Travy Bear.

Mary Gerun April 25, 1922 – March 1, 2017
With deep sorrow we regret to announce the passing of our Mother – Grandmother – Great Grandmother on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at the age of 94 years. She was living in Joseph Creek Care Village. Surviving family members are her sons Alvin (Gloria) of Nelson, BC, Lloyd (Gladys) and Raymond of Cranbrook and daughter Debbie (Wayne) Wicheruk of Cranbrook. Grandchildren Michael (Lua) Gerun, Mark (Tammy) Wicheruk, Trevor Wicheruk and Raelyn Gerun. Great grandchildren are Hailee Gerun, Isabel and Audrey Wicheruk. Mary was predeceased by her husband Mike Gerun in 2001, her son Keith Gerun in 1977 and great grandson Gracin in 2007. Mary was a kind, caring and generous person who spent many hours preparing meals and caring for the family. She worked as a care worker for Cranbrook Home Support for 30 years after raising her family. She loved to pick mushrooms, huckleberries and wild berries. In early years she and Mike spent many days digging for bottles and collecting antiques of various sorts. She spent many hours in her vegetable garden and dearly loved her flowers. She will be sadly missed by her entire family who attended the family Celebration of Life held on Saturday, March 4th in honour of her passing. We thank the staff at Joseph Creek for the care they took in looking after mom while she was there for her year and a half stay. A special thank you for the care and kindness they had for her in her last days. No flowers by request of the family. Condolences may be left for the family at www. markmemorial.com. Travis Patrick McNeill 1995 - 2017
It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to our son Travis, who passed away at East Kootenay Regional Hospital on February 26, 2017, with his family by his side. He was born on November 3, 1995 in Cranbrook. Travis had a zest for life; he faced numerous setbacks but somehow always had a smile on his face. He lived to watch his Barney movies and communicate his favorite sayings. Travis enjoyed school while he was able to attend. He loved to be around his family and be in the middle of whatever shenanigans were going on around him. It was important to him to be included no matter what it was. He enjoyed camping with his family and being on a floatie in the lake and would giggle when he got splashed with water or when the waves rocked him up and down. He is survived by his father Patrick McNeill (Tracy Cross), mother Brenda McNeill, sister Crystal Johnson, brother Tyler McNeill, grandparents Stella McNeill, Evelyn Mason, and by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and nieces. Travis was predeceased by his grandfathers Robert McNeill and Kenneth Mason, great-grandparents, aunts, and uncles on both sides of the family. Travis will always be in our hearts and forever missed. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Travis’ father will be holding a separate Celebration of Life service for Travis at 2:00 pm, Friday, March 17, 2017 at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

Neve on St. Patrick’s Day
Gardeners
This is an exciting time of year for gardeners, novice and not so novice alike. It’s time to explore the seed racks for the possibilities of what our gardens can become. There is something about starting a plant from seed, nurturing it and planting it outside that leaves you feeling connected with nature. Heirloom seeds are expanding in popularity and options. Why choose Heirloom? Typically, Heirloom varieties prioritized production quality, taste, and less on appearance of plant or fruit. Checkout the new seeds from WildRose Heritage Seeds grown 100% heirloom varieties and locally in Lethbridge, AB. They have the best resealable seed packs in the business.
Heating mats and lights are essential to success. Heat mats under the trays keep the soil constantly warm, help the seeds to germinate more quickly and consistently. When the seedlings have sprouted from the soil, it is time to provide them with light. Remove the plastic domes, place the seedlings under full spectrum grow lights. The seedlings prefer 12 to 18 hours of light a day. When your seedlings have 4-6 leaves, it is time to transplant into larger containers.
