How to Have a Great Retirement

R

etirement can last a long time so it deserves serious consideration.

But other than the office retirement party, our culture does not have many ceremonies to teach us about retirement. Modern medicine gives us the the miracle of the long retirement. We live way longer now. The agony of retirement is brought to you by the forces of work. We simply don’t know how live without it. I say stuff now that I never used to say. I used to say, “Oh, groan, it’s Monday morning.” Now, I say “geez, the weekend sure got in the way of me catching up on all my work.” Crazy? Well, here’s more. I used to think there was nothing better than a two week vacation. Now, I am tempted to work while on vacation. Wait, it gets worse.

I know people who retire and go out and get two or three more jobs. They see they need purpose, challenge, cash, and something to keep them busy. What happened? Retirement just ain’t what it used to be. I suggest that a pre-retirement ceremony may be part of the answer. Pre-retirement is challenging because our work identities are important to us. Not have the meaning and benefits of work can be very unsettling. Work does more than condition you as a labourer. It creates who you think you are. Sooner or later, believe it or not, the goal is to release that work identity. But it isn’t easy. Pre-retirement isn’t about joining everything. It isn’t about taking a long trip to Belize or buying a yacht fixer-up-

Hugs: Many hugs to the thoughtful & caring lady that was standing in line at Emergency. When the nurse called her to come in she told her to take me instead because she could see that I was in agony. Bless you and I cannot thank you enough. Hugs: To PEI for passing a law forbidding the export of water from the province except for humanitarian aid or necessary travel need. This is an example that could discourage bourgeois capitalist organization such as Nestle from acquiring our water sources for profit.

making. Pre-retirement can be painful. Facing yourself in stillness and silence is work. Is there a good part? Yes, there is.

Stan Chung PhD And that’s the resurgence of the real you. The unencumbered you. The fully matured version of the you that is going to make retirement a most special time. We all know retirement is a place for a different kind of achievement, a “soul achievement,” not something that is measured in expenditures but in relation-

ships, joy, and wellbeing. We all know a healthy retirement is about a distinctive kind of togetherness, not a steady alienation from people. So what will your pre-retirement phase look like? Will it mean downsizing and living closer to family and friends? Will it mean volunteering while you work to get a flavour of what you might like? Will it mean taking a few exploratory courses? Yes, pre-retirement is trying stuff out but mostly it is about holding still for as long as you can. My colleagues talk about three phases of retirement: 1) active, 2) aging in place, and 3) slowing down. If you retire at 60 then you have about 10 years at each phase. Each phase is special, very different. And short.

Most people think that their 30 years in retirement will be mostly active, but that may not be realistic. Travel becomes not only increasingly difficult as we age but it also becomes less desirable with relationships becoming more dear and necessary. Pre-retirement means planning for these three phases. Where are we going to live? How much money do we need? How close is the nearest hospital? Health might be the most important consideration of all. Don’t let too much work cheat you out of your active years. They are limited. Pre-retirement is not an easy place. It’s too easy to enter into denial and keep working on the treadmill of life, too busy to get off for a moment and pause. Don’t wait for illness to force you to

your volunteer hours on the court. Such a fun, fast and entertaining sport to watch. Thank you!

per. It isn’t about doing “anything.” It’s about doing nothing. You see, the enemy of retirement is busy. Busy means you still haven’t addressed your owkr identity. Busy suggests you haven’t come to terms with the “you” behind the official version of your work identity. When I get there, I’m going to have a devil of a time in pre-retirement. Sitting still, dealing with nothingness, looking in the mirror—these things are not only not fun, but they are painful. It is painful to think about my social conditioning. It is painful to sit still and contemplate a change in identity. Retirement can be the greatest joy of your life, the coup de grace, the cherry on top of a life welllived. pause. A pause in our work lives can take many forms--an extended leave, an extra-long vacation, a decision to enter a phased retirement. But the biggest mistake I have seen is to over-worry about money, to maximize earnings in a way that ironically only decreases well-being and perhaps even shortens retirement. Maximize life: not money. Generally, the experts say we need a lot less money than we think. If we’ve done the planning and reflection properly, then retirement becomes truly about a time when less means more. Relationships can come alive in ways that were impossible during our busy work lives. Creativity can blossom in unexpected ways. Love can suddenly ignite into a flame beyond all recognition. I hope we all have a fabulous retirement, a retirement filled with emotion, adventure, achievement, love, and grace. A great retirement might just begin with a pre-retirement ceremony, a time of sitting still that ends the moment the discomfort with yourself goes away. Our government delivered the most jobs in the country with over 222,000 jobs created since 2011 (96% full time). Do you think the NDP, who are against mining, who will shut down the Site C project, who will shut down LNG, and who will raise taxes are going to continue the growth enjoyed under our government? Easy answer – no.

A

pril 4, 2017, is National Family Caregiver Day. This is a special day that recognizes and celebrates the valuable work done by caregivers in our communities. It is also an ideal time to highlight the needs and services that support caregivers in the East Kootenay. Caregiving is a lifestage we all may face at one time or another. Many of us will be involved in caring for an adult with some type of disability or an older loved one with a chronic illness — such as heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease or cancer — or other issues that come with aging such as a broken hip from a fall, hearing im-

pairment, memory loss, etc. Given this reality, it is important to understand the challenges as well as the supports available in our community. It should be recognized that caregiving is hard work. Caregivers face many challenges in balancing life and family while juggling the role of caregiver. Trying to meet everyone’s needs can often lead to burnout, stress and isolation. Furthermore, navigating the system as a caregiver can be confusing and frustrating. Therefore, an important aspect of caregiving is caring for oneself. In my role as the Program manager for the Caregivers Network for East Kootenay Seniors,

Our government has balanced the provincial budget for 5 straight years and are able to cut taxes by reducing MSP 50% as a rst step to elimination, building on the lowest overall middle-class taxes in Canada. The NDP don’t care about balancing the books. They say they will raise taxes on everybody but they will hide it in the tax system to try and fool us all.

I’ve talked to caregivers throughout the East Kootenay and have noticed that caregivers tend to take care of everyone else — spouse, children, career/job — but often place themselves last. As a result, caregiver’s needs are often overlooked and not prioritized. This can explain why so many caregivers become ill. In fact, caregivers are more likely than the general population to develop multiple chronic illnesses earlier in life and can suffer increased stress and a syndrome known as “caregiver burn-out.” It is important to remember that if a caregiver becomes ill or run down, there may not be anyone to care for those most vulnerable. Therefore, it is important to have a plan to maintain caregiver health and wellness: • Keep those doctor appointments. • Try to stick to a

healthy nutrition plan. • Get some form of exercise even if it is just a few minutes of walking a day to relieve stress. • Stay connected to friends and activities to help your own well-being. • Join a support group. The Caregivers Network for East Kootenay Seniors offers support groups for caregivers of seniors in Cranbrook, Creston, Kimberley, Fernie, Invermere and Golden. We also offer a Toll-Free support line 1-877-489-0803 to allow caregivers to access vital information and support. • Make a resolution to take charge and feel empowered. Develop a caregiving plan that works for you, focus on self-care, and reach out for support — help is available. As a community, we can show our appreciation for caregivers on Tuesday April 4, 2017 in

celebration of National Caregivers Day. Often small gestures can mean the most. Simply asking a caregiver if they need help is a great place to start. Treat a caregiver to a coffee break. Or, volunteer to provide some respite care, and allow a caregiver a well-deserved break. Some caregivers have a hard time asking for help. Offer to help a caregiver you know with a task you can take on. This could be anything from preparing a meal, driving to appointments, or maybe cutting the grass. There is a lot we can do to support the caregivers in our community. Let’s start by recognizing them on National Family Caregiver Day by showing our appreciation and support. Tobi Johnston, M.A., M.S.W, is Program Manager for the Caregivers Network for East Kootenay Seniors.

The 37th Annual Heart & Stroke Curlathon was held Saturday, March 4, at the Cranbrook Curling Club. As in previous years, it was a huge success. We had 20 teams participating in this funfilled one-day event. The theme was Monster Mash so the club was buzzing with lots of zombies and monsters. A fantastic time was had by all. Once again, for the 15th year in a row, Jeff Bleaney was the top fundraiser for this event, raising a total of $2,430 in pledges. This was accomplished despite the fact that his mother was very sick throughout the year and had passed away a week before the curlathon. We are so grateful for Jeff’s efforts, as year after year, he strives to be the top fundraiser. Also, thank you to Frank Cross who also, every year, has been a top fundraiser. He brought in $600 worth of pledges. We were able to raise $10,600 for Heart & Stroke. Thank you so much to everyone who participated, and espe-

Remembering Our Loved Ones

It is with great sadness and tremendous loss that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother at the age of 89, at home with family by her side. Marianne was born in Revelstoke, BC on April 1, 1927 to parents Evelyn Evans (nee Holmstrom) and Russell Evans of Beaton, BC, the 6th of 9 children. She was a gifted and beautiful child who was always at the top of her class, and as the fastest runner she was the person sent for the nurse when anyone was in need. Marianne was an intelligent woman who longed for university and higher learning, history being her subject of choice. Her desire to do her best was a strong part of her personality and work ethic. She worked hard at every job, her favourite being an assistant in a photography studio. She was socially and politically active. She volunteered for the Canadian Mental Health Association, Scouts Canada, and campaigned for numerous charities. She was very involved in BC politics in the 60’s and 70’s becoming good friends with several of the province’s leaders. She was often asked to run for office, but the spotlight was never her favourite place. She always said if there were 2 other people in the room she couldn’t shut up and if there were more than 3 that she couldn’t open her mouth, but behind the scenes her contributions were significant. As a mother of 5, she was tireless when it came to caring for her family. She kept the house and gardens in pristine shape. Her cooking skills led her to work in many restaurants and dining rooms in BC and Alberta and she never served anything less than delicious. She was a talented and meticulous knitter and crocheted heirloom pieces. She was “Mom” to her kid’s friends and many others she met along the way. Marianne was fun loving and enjoyed a good prank or a bit of silliness. She was always ready with a smile or a kind word. She taught her kids to believe that as a society we are only as strong as the weakest of us. She was thoughtful and insightful and to all that knew her she was elegant, a “true lady”. Marianne was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and lupus in the 90’s and later developed a movement disorder and recently pancreatic cancer. This made the last years of her life very hard and physically painful, but she never gave up and always believed in a positive future. She often talked about dancing on her 100th birthday and we are sure she will kick up her heals in heaven with the Lord by her side. She will be able to dance free of pain and sickness, long into the wee hours of the morning. Marianne is survived by her children Jak (Tammy) and family, Bill (Melanie), Valerie (Keith) and Wendy; her grandsons Ben and Braden and her brother Bennett. She was predeceased by her oldest son Monty, her husband Bill, her brothers Richard, George and Bill, her sisters Janey, Olive, Min and Blenda and her parents Evelyn and Russell Evans. Mom, your kind and generous spirit make us all want to be better people. You will be missed more than words can express and your legacy of caring will live on. If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever. “If flowers grow in heaven, Lord, then pick a bunch for me. Then place them in my mother’s arms and tell her they’re from me. Tell her that I love and miss her and when she turns to smile, place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for awhile.” “If tears could build a stairway, and memories a lane, I’d walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.” A funeral service for Marianne will be held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Friday, March 24, 2017 at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow in Westlawn Cemetery. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in honour of Marianne may do so to the: Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon, Okanagan/Kootenays Area Office, #4, 1551 - Sutherland Avenue, Kelowna, British Columbia, V1Y 9M9 or the : Canadian Cancer Society, #202, 105 - 9th Avenue South, Cranbrook, BC, V1C 2M1. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

Volkswagen Golf

Golf Alltrack Wagon joins the line-up Volkswagen practically invented the hatchback and has stuck with that shape for more than four decades. Following the addition of the Golf Sportwagen for 2016, VW is introducing the Alltrack of fshoot for 2017. Unlike the Sportwagen, the Alltrack is, as the name implies, is fitted with VW’s 4Motion all-

wheel-drive system (also optional on the Sportwagen for 2017) that can divert up to 50 per cent of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels when the front wheels begin to slip. Alltrack models also have an extra 2.5 centimetres of ground clearance plus additional body cladding for that off-road appearance. Powering

the Alltrack is the same 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine found in your basic Golf hatchback plus the Sportwagen, while the sporty GTI uses a more potent 2.0-litre turbo I4. Returning unchanged for 2017 is the AWD Golf R that punches above its weight with 292 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque.

• Base price (incl. destination): $20,600 • Type: Two- /four-door hatchback • Engines (h.p.): 1.8-litre I-4, turbocharged (170); 2.0-litre I-4 turbocharged (210, GTI; 292, R) • Transmissions: Five-speed manual; Six-speed automatic

(opt.); six-speed manual (std. Alltrack, GTI, R); six-speed automated manual (opt. GTI, R, Alltrack) • Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-dr•ive • Base l/100 km (city/highway/combined): 9.3/6.4/8.0 (1.8, MT) Base weight (kg): 1,320

BC SPCA unveils plans for new West Kootenay Community Animal Centre Submitted The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA) unveiled plans for its new West Kootenay Community Animal Centre in Castlegar at a special event on March 21 at the Castelgar Complex. “We are extremely excited about the new centre and are grateful to the provincial government, the Columbia Basin Trust, the City of Castlegar and all the generous animal lovers who are helping us make this urgently needed facility a reality,” said Craig Daniell, chief executive officer of the BC SPCA. The BC SPCA, a not-for-profit organization, served nearly 43,000 abused,

neglected, abandoned and injured animals last year, including 1,164 from the West Kootenay region. The new 4,600-square-foot facility, to be located at 124 Heritage Way (west of the airport), will incorporate modern designs to ensure the highest levels of health and welfare for dogs, cats and small animals, as well as designated areas for temperament and behaviour assessments and specialized isolation areas for sick and injured animals. “The centre will also have a multi-purpose space that can be used for dog training, SPCA youth camps, workshops and other events for the community,” said Daniell.

The new West Kootenay facility is part of the BC SPCA’s eight-year Facilities Development & Services Plan to replace or refurbish aging SPCA facilities in 12 communities at a cost of $54 million. The Province of B.C. has contributed $10 million towards the first two phases of the capital plan so far, $900,000 of which will be used for the West Kootenay centre. “Abandoned, injured or ill cats, dogs and other small animals will receive excellent levels of comfort and treatment when the new facility opens in Castlegar,” said B.C. Minister of Agriculture Norm Letnick. “As the B.C. government’s partnership with the

SPCA continues to grow, so will the respect and welfare for animals in communities around B.C.” Land for the new SPCA animal centre was donated by the City of Castlegar and the society also received a generous contribution of $250,000 from the Columbia Basin

Trust, said Daniell, noting that the SPCA needs to raise an additional $150,000 from community donations to complete the project. Total cost for the new facility is $2 million. See SPCA, Page 5

B.C. Conservatives’ late revival questioned Tom Fletcher Black Press

Having fired their latest leader late last year, with no replacement in sight, the BC Conservatives are working to get as many as 30 candidates

on the ballot for the May 9 provincial election. With three candidates declared and another dozen in the candidate vetting process, the party is getting as many people to run as they can by

the deadline in April, party spokesman John Twigg said this week. Twigg said in an interview from Campbell River he is considering seeking a seat himself, and the party is look-

ing at its leadership options after two-time leader Dan Brooks was removed from office by the party board on a legal technicality last fall. BC Liberals are finding that hard to believe, given Twigg’s

long history as an NDP supporter that goes back to his days as press secretary for former premier Dave Barrett in the 1970s. Bill Bennett, who is retiring after 16 years as BC Liberal MLA for Kootenay

East, cited Twigg’s multiple donations to the NDP in recent years, including $300 to John Horgan’s leadership campaign. See BC, Page 9

B.C. Conservatives’ late revival questioned

From Page 8 “It is a transparent and rather sad attempt by the NDP to muster up a vote split going into this provincial election, and it is I think a pretty obvious indication of just how desperate they must be, Bennett said Monday. “The idea that John Twigg could have experienced a sudden conversion to conservatism after a lifetime of socialism, it cannot be believed. It’s about like me saying that I’ve suddenly converted to the NDP. Twigg said he left the NDP over its gender equity policy for candi-

dates, and he considers himself more pro-development than most members of that party. “We have a major economic development platform coming, Twigg said, including an announcement in Nanaimo this week. Both Bennett and Twigg agreed that vote splitting is an issue in B.C. elections, with the NDP benefiting from BC Conservative candidates and the BC Liberals being helped by BC Green support. Twigg said he isn’t concerned about the BC Liberals singling him out. “I hope they do, he

said. “It just draws attention to us. They are corrupt and it’s time they were out, and this

kind of junk they do is a good example. So far the BC Conservatives have nominated

Fibromyalgia and Thyroid Many people diagnosed with Fibromyalgia may actually have an undiagnosed t h y ro i d problem. Fibromyalgia is a condition characterized by fatigue and muscle and joint pain. Other symptoms of fibromyalgia include depression, h e a d a c h e s , difficulty concentrating and constipation.  Sound familiar? If you have hypothyroidism (a condition where the thyroid doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone) you might recognize the symptoms of fibromyalgia. People with fibromyalgia and hypothyroidism have very similar symptom pictures. Over the last few weeks I have written a series of articles on the thyroid and one of the common themes of these articles was that low thyroid function can be very difficult to diagnose if the health care provider relies exclusively on traditional t h y ro i d b l o o d w o r k . Let’s say, for example, that you are tired and sore and go to see your clinician. One of the first tests they will order is TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) which measures, indirectly, how much storage and transport form of thyroid hormone (T4) you are producing. If the TSH is normal and your symptoms of fatigue and soreness continue, you will

likely be diagnosed with fibromyalgia. The problem is that the TSH test is very often not truly representative of how much active thyroid hormone (T3) your cells are getting. It is common for TSH to be normal when the person actually has a thyroid p r o b l e m .  H i s t o r i c a l l y, people w i t h s y m p t o m s of hypothyroidism were treated based on their symptoms, not on blood tests.  heavy Our moder n, re l i a n c e on thyroid blood work has resulted in many people being inaccurately d i a g n o s e d with fibromyalgia and living with an untreated thyroid problem.  If you have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and told your thyroid is normal, you might reconsider. One easy at home test you can do is to take your mid afternoon (3pm) oral temperature. Normal is 37 Celsius. If your temps are 36.5 C or lower then this is a strong indication that your thyroid is under functioning. If you would like to learn more about this complex topic go to www. stopthethyroidmadness. com. This web site is an excellent resource (although written with a sizeable chip on the shoulder) for people wanting to learn more about thyroid health.
