Suspicious death remains under investigation For the Townsman
Cranbrook RCMP, along with Major Crime Units from Vancouver and Kelowna, continue to investigate after a 73-yearold woman was found deceased in the common room of a residential assistance home. On March 30, Cranbrook RCMP were called to the scene of a sudden death in the 300 Block of 3rd Street North. Investigation revealed that the victim had died sometime overnight. “Police continue to comb through evidence and speak with people in the area,” said Cst. Katie Forgeron. “At this time we do not believe the public is at risk.” Cranbrook RCMP is asking anyone with information about this incident to contact them at 250-489-3471.
Red tape halts small mine tours Tre vor Cr awley
A Cranbrook placer gold miner is upset that government red tape is preventing a tourism business at his mineral claim up the Wildhorse Creek drainage. Stephen Lathem with the Nip & Tuck Gold mine, says that new permitting regulations have all but shut down summer tours of his small gold mining operation. Lathem has been running the tours of the site since 2009 after acquiring a permit from BC Tourism to do so. However, in 2013, new regulations came into effect that had stricter definitions of adventure tourism, prohibiting tours of his mine
site. According to Lathem, part of the problem is cross-ministry regulations; tours of mine sites are permitted under legislation by the Ministry of Mines, however, the new tourism permitting regulations, which fall under adventure tourism, are administered by the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training. He’s been ordered to cease and desist tours of the operation and is concerned he won’t be able to navigate through all the government bureaucracy for the summer tourism season.

Deer cull opponent sues Invermere mayor Ste ve Hubrecht Columbia Valley Pioneer
Long-standing division in Invermere over how to deal with urban deer has now reached a new, much more personal level with Invermere mayor and Columbia River-Revelstoke NDP candidate Gerry Taft being sued for defamation. The lawsuit was filed months ago by Invermere resident and BC Deer Protection Society member Devin Kazakoff and is scheduled to be heard by the B.C. Supreme Court in Cranbrook in about two weeks time. In the lawsuit, Mr. Kazakoff references an online comment by Mr. Taft, made in January 2016, in which Mr. Taft labelled Mr. Kazakoff “a convict-
ed felon” in relation to Mr. Kazakoff pleading guilty in 2015 to charges of tampering with deer traps in Kimberley in 2014. The Pioneer contacted Mr. Kazakoff several times seeking comment on the matter, but did not receive a reply. He had, however, earlier confirmed to the Vancouver Sun that the case is ongoing and that he can’t discuss details. For damaging the traps, Mr. Kazakoff was given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay fines, but did not get a permanent criminal record for the vandalism.

100 years since the Battle of Vimy Ridge Royal Canadian Legion to mark significant anniversary with special ceremony in Rotary Park

will have been 100 years since the assault on Vimy Ridge, a First World War battle that helped define Canada as a nation. To mark the occasion of one of the most significant anniversaries in Canadian history, the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 24 Cranbrook, will hold a special ceremony Sunday, April 9. On Sunday, the parade will begin at 2 p.m., the ceremony itself at at 2:30 p.m. in Rotary Park. Where is Vimy Ridge, and what is its importance?
Vimy Ridge is 107 kilometres southwest of Calais, and eight kilometres northeast of Arras in the northern part of France. The ridge is approximately seven kilometres long, and reaches a height of 145 metres, offering a view in all directions for several kilometres. The ridge fell under German control in October, 1914, whereby they

ed the German positions day and night. Then, on Easter Monday, April 9, 1917, at precisely 5:30 a.m. on a cold sleet and snowy day, the main assault began. Thirty seconds later, engineers detonated charges that were placed in the tunnels under German positions. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Divisions had captured their objectives by 7:30 a.m. The 4th Division encountered trouble due to German machine gun nests that had survived the bombardment. Flying overhead were the reconnaissance aircraft of the Royal Flying Corps. Among them was Canadian air ace Billy Bishop. Although the battle lasted four days, the Canadian Corps was in full control of Vimy Ridge by nightfall, April 12. Four Victoria Crosses were awarded to Canadians for their part in the battle. The victory did not come without a heavy cost to the Canadian

Corps. There were 10,602 casualties — 3,598 killed and 7,004 wounded. Among those killed were five Cranbrook boys: Lt. H. Banfield, brothers Lawson and Harold Cadwallader, Billy Harrison and John McDonald. Their names are on the cenotaph in Cranbrook. German casualties are undetermined — about 4,000 were taken prisoner. To quote Brigadier General A.E. Ross, “In those few minutes I witnessed the birth of a nation.” A school teacher from Victoria, B.C., with only militia training, went to Vimy, and rose up through the ranks to later become the commanding officer of the Canadian troops. He was General Arthur Currie. In 1920, the government of Canada announced that war memorials would be built in Belgium and France. France ceded 250 acres on Vimy Ridge to Canada for a battlefield park — thus the Vimy Memo-
rial was built on the highest ground. Walter Alward of Toronto designed and oversaw the construction. It took 11 years to complete. On July 16, 1936, five trans-Atlantic liners, carrying 6,200 passengers, and escorted by the HMCS Champlain Saguenay, set out from Canada, arriving at La Havre on July 24 and 25. The passengers were part of a contingent of more than 50,000 Canadians, French and English, who were in attendance as the Vimy Memorial was unveiled on July 26, 1936, by King Edward VIII. The memorial stands 150 feet high, and incorporates 20 sculptures — one representing Mother Canada, her head down, chin resting in one hand as she mourns Canada’s dead. The memorial has inscribed on its wall the names of 11,285 Canadians killed in France who have no known resting place. Submitted by Larry Miller

began installing heavy defenses, including trenches, tunnels, and placements of mortar, machine gun and artillery. In May, 1915, the French forces attempted to remove the Germans, but were unable to hold the ridge due to lack of reinforcements. The French tried again in September, 1915, but again failed with the cost of 150,000 casualties. In February, 1916, the British under the command of General Julian Byng relieved the French and began tunnelling operations to combat the Germans’ mining operations. In response, the Germans launched an attack on May 21, 1916, over a 2,000-yard front, to eject the British. As a result, several British tunnels were captured. Small counter-attacks were launched by the British, but did not change the situation. The Canadian Corps relieved the British in October, 1916. This would be the first time all four Canadian divisions would participate in battle, with one British division reinforcing. This brought the Canadian Corps to about 170,000 men. Early in 1917, Canadian and British officers held meetings with the French regarding their experiences at Vimy, and a battle plan was drawn up with General Byng in command. For two weeks before the main assault, Canadian and British motor and artillery bombard-

Deer cull opponent sues Invermere Mayor Continued from page 1 According to the Vancouver Sun, Kazakoff’s case outlines that “the defamatory words published by the defendant (Mr. Taft) were calculated to expose the plaintiff (Mr. Kazakoff) to contempt, ridicule, hatred and humiliation, to lower the plaintiff in the estimation of right-thinking people generally, and to cause other persons to shun and avoid the plaintiff, all of which has in fact occurred and continues to occur.” Mr. Taft, however, was willing to offer some comments, although he couldn’t get into too much detail,
saying that in fact the case — which is meant to be a seven-day trial by jury — may not proceed on April 11th as it is supposed to. “Right now there is some uncertainty about when it is supposed to start,” he said, adding a hearing on April 3rd will determine whether or not it will be a jury trial. Originally it was Mr. Kazakoff’s legal team that had wanted a jury trial. “But recently it seems they do not want that. Now we’re the ones requesting jury trial, because we feel there are a lot of viewing issues about what a reasonable person would
Red tape impedes tours Continued from page 1 Tours of his goldmine consist of a walkthrough of the camp away from where any heavy equipment may be operating and people are give the chance to hand-dig or hand-pan for gold. Lathem has been gold panning since 1994, but acquired claims in 2004 in the Wildhorse drainage. Years of practice gave him the edge to compete in the World Gold Panning Championship that took him to Spain and Italy, where
he cfinished as the top Canadian in 2009. Access to hand pan for gold in the area is another issue; Lathem says Fisherville, the old gold-mining boom town east of Fort Steele, technically prohibits any public access for gold panning under heritage conservation regulations unless a special permit is issued. However, the area is littered with signage that says hand-panning is allowed, Lathem added.
believe,” said Mr. Taft. “All I can say is that the whole process is quite expenses for legal fees and quite frustrating. I’m not covered by municipal insurance, and my legal fees are not covered by the district. This is coming out of my own pockets.” Mr. Taft declined to offer much in the way of speculation on whether or not the timing of the lawsuit was intentionally aimed by Mr. Kazakoff to have an effect on the upcoming provincial election in May, but did say “it feels like it”, acknowledging that not only will the case likely result in a dose of negative publicity, but will also tie him up and keep him off the campaign trail for a full week at a crucial time. Mr. Kazakoff has a long history of antagonism with Mr. Taft, stemming from Mr. Taft’s role as District of Invermere mayor and Mr. Kazakoff’s longtime opposition to the district’s efforts to manage its urban deer population through deer culls. The district has had an operational urban deer cull in place since 2014, following a 2013 referendum that indicated more than 70 per cent of Invermere residents were in favour of culling to control deer numbers.

Vimy Ridge
As we honor those that fought and died during the battle of Vimy Ridge, the Hall families of Kimberley and Cranbrook wish to remember Corporal Ernest Swanell Hall, who died during this battle on April 10, 1917. This was our Uncle Ernie’s 20th birthday. He left behind his wife and infant son, his parents and many brothers and sisters. Although he has a beautifully kept grave near the Vimy Memorial, his final resting place is somewhere on Vimy Ridge known only to God. Although we never knew our Uncle we still have a special connection with him for his sacrifice to make the world a better place. Larry Hall Cranbrook
Skate Park Speed Zone
It is absolutely necessary to have a 30 kph speed zone at the Kimberley Skate Park. Many children are using the skate park on a regular basis. I live above the bench on Rotary Drive and you cannot miss and/or hear motorists speeding by. Many of them fail to give right of way at the crosswalk. The speed limit at the Kaslo skate park is 20 kph. Many moms in the past have approached city hall to complain about the speed zone. At Marsden Bridge school children catch the school bus. It makes sense to designate this area as a playground school bus zone. People have the alternative of using Wallinger instead of Rotary. Patti Biggs Kimberley
Forest policies need to add up
W
e’ll hear a lot of talk about “raw logs” in the next few weeks, as B.C. political parties position themselves for the May 9 vote. “Raw logs” is the emotional buzzword designed to bring the issue down to the bumper-sticker level of modern political debate. NDP politicians denounce the BC Liberals for presiding over a “500 per cent” increase in log, sorry, “raw log” exports, as sawmills have closed. The BC Liberals respond that more jobs would be lost if further restrictions were put on log exports, the NDP doesn’t care about loggers, and so forth. Fortunately, BC Stats has just produced its annual export trade figures, for all commodities including logs and lumber. They tell more of the story. There has indeed been a steep increase in log exports to China, from next to nothing in 2007 to more than $400 million by value in 2016. Log exports to the U.S. declined 10 years ago and have ticked along at about $50 million a year since. Log export value to Japan is consistently three times that of the U.S. in the past decade, which makes sense when you consider that Japan is the most finicky wood importer in the world. They particularly like our coastal red cedar, and pay handsomely for it, in log or lumber form. Looking at export figures for sawn lumber, you begin to see that log exports are mostly a political sideshow. The U.S., China and Japan are B.C.’s leading customers here as well, with lumber value running as much as 10 times log value in a given year. Lumber exports to China climbed from minimal to nearly $1.5 billion a year by 2014, helping to keep B.C. sawmills running after the collapse of the U.S. housing market. As the U.S. has recovered, and the expiry of its border restrictions has created a fragile window of free trade in lumber, B.C. exports south have soared, reaching more than $4.5 billion in 2016. Japan remains a steady and vital premium lumber customer, with export values of around $800 million annually. Note that
lumber sales to Japan alone are worth as much as B.C.’s total log exports to the world. China’s emergence as a major wood customer follows expensive marketing efforts over many years by the forest industry, the federal government and B.C. Now that our exports south are under threat again, Asia becomes more important than ever. The BC Liberals say much of the increase in log BC Views exports is from remote locations with no mill option Tom available. That’s places like Fletcher the Great Bear Rainforest, where logging continues under new rules. Economists will tell you that as with many industries, more jobs have been lost from new technology, in the bush and in the mill, than from log exports. The BC Green Party has announced it would extend carbon tax to slash pile
burning, to force logging companies to sell wood waste for pellets or other uses. The forests ministry already does this by policy, applied only to locations where it can be economically done. It’s required when there is “clear demand” such as a pellet plant, where businesses would generally make the deal without government instruction. David Elstone, executive director of the Truck Loggers’ Association, notes that slash is piled and burned to prepare sites for mandatory replanting. He argues the forest industryRUNshould a break TIL ENDget OF APRIL - STOPfrom FOR carbon tax onSUMMER fuel, since wood structures - THEN RESTART SEPT.6TH and products sequester carbon for longer than natural forests, where wood rots and releases carbon dioxide back the atmosphere. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.
Log sales to China have increased, but lumber sales to all three countries are much more valuable. Letters to the Editor

Nuclear war with North Korea
N
ever mind the legalities of the situation. Never mind morality either. Just answer the pragmatic question: Is it ever a good idea to start a nuclear war? Because that’s the notion that Donald Trump is actually playing with. He didn’t say exactly that, of course. He said that “If China is not going to solve (the nuclear threat from) North Korea, we will. That is all I am telling you.” But in the context of that interview with the Financial Times, it was clear what he meant. Trump was saying that if China did not use the tools at its disposal (political influence, trade sanctions, withholding financial aid) to make North Korea give up its nuclear weapons and long-range rockets, then the United States would use the tools at its disposal (the world’s most powerful armed forces) to accomplish the same goal. This does not necessarily mean that the United States would launch a large nuclear attack against North Korea. If you are really serious about carrying out a “disarming strike” that destroys all of North Korea’s nukes, you probably should do exactly that. (You never get a second chance to go first.) But maybe the US Air Force would promise that “precision” non-nuclear weapons could accomplish that goal, and maybe some gullible people would believe it. It would still turn into a nuclear war in the end, unless American “surgical strikes” miraculously eliminated every last one of North Korea’s nukes at the same time. Kim Jong-un’s regime would find itself in the position known in nuclear strategy as “use them or lose them”, and it is hard to believe that it would not launch whatever it had left. The targets would be in South Korea, of
course, but probably also American bases in Japan. Maybe even Japanese cities, if North Korea had enough weapons left. The regime would know it was going under — the United States would not take this huge risk and then leave it in power — so it would take as many of its enemies as possible down with it. North America would probably not be hit, because Western intelligence services do not believe that Gwynne Pyongyang has ballistic missiles that can reach that Dyer far yet. (But “intelligence” is not the same as knowing for sure, and they could be wrong.) At worst, the victims would be one or two cities in the Pacific north-west of the United States. This would be a very bad outcome for people living in Seattle or Portland, but it would not actually be a “nuclear holocaust”. The kind of war that the super-powers would have fought at the height of the Cold War, with thousands of nuclear weapons used by each side, would have killed hundreds of millions, and might even have triggered a “nuclear winter”. A nuclear war over Korea would be a much smaller catastrophe, perhaps involving a few million deaths — unless China got drawn in. Unfortunately, that is not inconceivable, because China, much as it dislikes and mistrusts the North Korean regime, is determined not to see it destroyed. Many people are uncomfortable with this kind of analysis, especially when it draws comparisons between “bad” and “less bad” nuclear wars. Herman Kahn, the dean of nuclear strategists in the 1960s and 70s, was frequently the target of this kind of criticism: how could he talk about potential mass death in such a cold-blooded way? His response was always the same:
“Would you prefer a nice, warm mistake?” “Thinking About the Unthinkable”, as he put it in one of his books, is absolutely necessary if the Unthinkable is not happen. In this case, that means taking the possibility that China might be drawn into the conflict seriously. The destruction of the North Korean regime would bring American military power right to China’s own border. You might reasonably ask: So what? This is the 21st century, and what matters strategically is the big, lethal long-range weapons (like nukes), not the whereabouts of a few American infantry battalions. Quite right in theory. Not necessarily right in practice. During the Korean War, when American troops were operating very close to the Chinese frontier in late 1950, the Chinese regime sent troops in to save the North Korean regime — and succeeded. The scenario this time, with nuclear weapons already being used on both sides of the North Korea-South Korea frontier, would be different, but it could be even more dangerous. China has lots of nuclear weapons, and delivery vehicles too. Donald Trump is the fourth American president to be faced with the challenge of North Korean nuclear weapons, and none of them has found a safe and effective way of dealing with it. But all the others avoided making open threats of violence, because that would probably just make matters worse. Of course, Trump may just be bluffing. In fact, he almost certainly is. But if your bluff is called, you have to go through with your threat or accept being humiliated. The Donald doesn’t do humiliation. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist published in 45 countries.

Training season begins for young Bandits High performance camp for nine to 13-year-old youth signals beginning of buildup towards 2017 Cranbrook baseball campaign BR AD MCLEOD
They won’t be headed onto the field quite yet but Cranbrook baseball players are getting back into the swing of things this week. Indoor high performance training camp for players under the age of 13 begins tonight and according to Cranbrook Bandits head coach Paul Mrazek, it’ll have the best turnout in his 10 years leading the program. “We’ve had to add a third age category [because] we had so many kids sign up,” Mrazek said. “We thought of capping [the number of players] off [but instead]

should allow the young players to hit the ground running. “We’ll be going as hard as we can right away,” Mrazek said. “[We’ll be] indoors [but] working on their feet. It’s all in the feet.” As for the Bandits ‘A’ team — the top club for players up to 19 years old — while they’ve been working out since October, once the weather clears up at the start of May, their enthusiasm will really heat up. “Once we get on the field, the level of excitement will be increased,” Mrazek said. “We only have one week [to get
14-year-old Kootenay Ice playoff record broken Historic five overtime game between Everett Silvertips and Victoria Royals breaks WHL record for longest game set in Cranbrook in 2003 BR AD MCLEOD
It was an unbelievable display of endurance on Sunday night in Victoria, as the Royals and Everett Silvertips duked it out for eight periods in game six of their first-round series. When Everett’s Cal Babych scored a breakaway goal at the night’s 151:36 mark to send his team to the next round, the teams set a new record for the longest WHL and CHL game of all time. The previous WHL record holders were the Kamloops Blazers and Kootenay Ice, who went for 136:56 just over 14 years ago in a game held at Western Financial Place — then known as the Recplex. In Kootenay’s case, it was a game three situation that was ended by captain Colin Sinclair in fourth overtime. Sinclair’s tally was a rebound off Ice legend Nigel Dawes’ wraparound shot, who after the game admitted to the Cranbrook Townsman that the goal was less exciting than it was relieving.
“It was just a relief, I was ready to go to bed,” Dawes said just minutes after contributing to what was then the longest game in league history. Unlike Dawes and Sinclair, Babych was not a likely hero to finish the marathon in Victoria. The 20-year-old winger was a late addition to the Silvertips after spending the majority of the year with the BCHL’s Coquitlam Express. In 164 career regular season games, Babych only has 17 goals and the game-winner was only his second ever WHL playoff tally. The first one had come when he opened the game’s scoring at 6:31 in the second period, about 125 minutes before his history setting quintuple OT goal. Although the Ice and Cranbrook have been replaced in the record book, the team does not appear to be harbouring any ill-feelings towards the new champions of never-ending WHL hockey. At 8:04 last night, the official Kootenay Ice
“Congratulations to the [Everett Silvertips] and [Victoria Royals] on completing the longest game in WHL and CHL history (and breaking our record)!” Kootenay Ice twitter page tweeted “congratulations to the [Everett Silvertips] and [Victoria Royals] on completing the longest game in WHL and CHL history (and breaking our record)!” The previous CHL record had been set on March 19, 1999, in Hull when the Olympiques and Victoriaville Tigers went 146:31 in the
QMJHL playoffs. With the victory, the Silvertips — who missed the last Ferry home and were forced to spend another night in Victoria — will face the Seattle Thunderbirds in round two beginning on Friday in Everett. After their game three victory over the Blazers in 2003, the Ice won the series in six games before being subsequently defeated by the Thunderbirds in five. NOTES: In other Kootenay Ice related WHL playoff news, the Lethbridge Hurricanes were able to stave off elimination at the hands of the Red Deer Rebels thanks to a game-winning goal by Zak Zborosky. Last season’s Ice team MVP, who played half the season as Kootenay’s leading scorer, was named the first star in game five of the ‘Canes-Rebels series in a situation where his team was facing elimination. The series is now headed to a game seven on Tuesday night.
out there] before our first games. We’ll hit the field on Tuesday [May 9] and our first game will be on Saturday, May 13.” While tryouts don’t begin for the big club until May 1, Mrazek knows that some of the positions are virtual locks. “Realistically, it’s open to these younger players if they can play but there are guys going
into their third, fourth and fifth years,” he said. “It’s going to be pretty tough to take a position away from them. They’ve learned the program and have a solid foundation down. “There are spots available [however], we lost [four players from last year’s team] so we do have spots to fill.” The team will be selected by May 8 and this
season there will also be a ‘B’ team for players 14-17 years old. The high performance youth camp, on the other hand, is running biweekly until May 4. It may be more than a month away before game action, but baseball players of all ages in Cranbrook are ready to make this another Bandits season to remember.

Children and Family Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux
Help promised for aboriginal child care Tom Fletcher Black Press
The federal government is underfunding family support on aboriginal reserves and its system makes it more likely that aboriginal children will be taken into government care, B.C.’s Representative for Children and Youth says. Representative Bernard Richard issued a report Thursday that found B.C.’s 23 delegated aboriginal child welfare agencies have similar problems as the provincial Ministry of Children and Family Development: insufficient staff and high caseloads of children taken from their families. Ottawa is legally responsible to provide on-reserve education and social services, but provides extra funding only after a children are removed from their families. The formula effectively means delegated agencies are rewarded for taking more children into care, one reason why aboriginal children are 17 times more likely to be removed from their families than non-aboriginal children. “Federal funding does not account for the real needs of children and families living on-reserve in B.C.” Richard wrote. “Nor does operational fund-

ing provided by Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada adequately cover essential capital costs such as office space, computers and vehicles.” B.C. Children and Family Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux accepted Richard’s criticism that the province has its own funding problems, with its delegated agencies not receiving the same funding as ministry services. This year’s ministry budget includes an additional $14.4 million to bring funding for delegated agencies up to the same level as the ministry, with the same target of a maximum 20 cases per social worker, Cadieux said. Richard said his interviews with staff at delegated aboriginal agencies reported average caseloads of 30 children. Cadieux said the province is implementing recommendations made last year by Grand Chief Ed John, a former minister brought in to make recommendations on culturally appropriate support for aboriginal children. B.C. is in talks with Ottawa to convince them that more on-reserve family support is needed to keep children with their families, Cadieux said.

DEAR ANNIE by Annie Lane
DEALING WITH A POLARIZED POLITICAL CLIMATE Dear Annie: I need a pep talk, and I imagine millions of others do, too. I am an informed and involved citizen, and I care passionately about this country. I’m glad to call it my home. But lately, with the polarized political climate, I’ve been coming to blows (not literally) with neighbors, friends and even family members over issues I never realized we disagreed about before. Without getting too much into the specifics, I just can’t understand how these rational people can hold these beliefs. I’ve read that one mustn’t allow politics to affect friendships, but how is that possible when a “friend” or neighbor believes and parrots false truths and reveals herself to be a total hypocrite? Limiting how much “news” and media I take in only makes me feel like an ostrich with my head in the sand. I feel that I’m contributing to the problem if I don’t stay involved and informed. But how do you stay involved, voice concern and not feel utterly helpless and completely stressed out? -- Political Stress Case Dear Political: It’s easy to get into a tizzy when we’re debating ideas. But if we focus more on actions, on the good we can do and the good others are doing, I think we’ll find we have more in common than we believe. For instance, before you learned that their politics were so different from yours, you probably considered your neighbors to be decent people. That decency is still there if you look for it. I’m not saying that ideology isn’t important or that it doesn’t have real-world consequences. But focus your energy on effecting change where you can do so without driving yourself crazy. (Read: not in a shouting match with your uncle.) Volunteer in your community. Canvass for a local politician whom you believe in. And if you want to stay sane long enough to make a difference, occasionally give yourself a break from the news for a day or two. Dear Annie: I’d like to respond to “Tired and Exhausted,” the mom whose son is struggling with addiction. I was in her shoes 15 years ago, when my son was 23 years old. I was emotionally and financially drained. I was a prime candidate for a mental health intervention myself. I went to an addiction counselor, who recommended that I go to Nar-Anon meetings. I resisted the idea for three months but finally went, vowing just to listen, not share my story. Everyone was so nice and welcomed me, and there was no pressure to speak. Much to my surprise, I knew right away that I was in the right place. I talked about my son, his addiction, the ways he was using me, his swinging door at the jailhouse and my depression. Long story short, I learned that I cannot help my son and I needed to stop enabling him. I got a Nar-Anon sponsor and eventually got my peaceful life back. “Tired and Exhausted”: If you want to live your remaining years on your son’s roller coaster, keep doing what you have been doing. If you want to live your remaining years in peace, get to a Nar-Anon meeting ASAP, continue going to meetings even if your son is clean and sober, get a sponsor, and follow the Nar-Anon program for the rest of your life. Nar-Anon saved my life and my sanity. -- Thankful Dear Thankful: I’m sure your letter will resonate with many readers who have been made desperate by a loved one’s addiction. Nar-Anon is a great organization. Visit http://www.nar-anon.org for more information. Send your questions for Annie Lane to dearannie@creators.com. Helen Kalinowski “Grannyâ€? March 30, 1924 March 29, 2017 It is with great sadness and tremendous loss that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. Mom passed away peacefully in her sleep at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital one day short of her 93rd birthday. Born in Wolucza, Poland, Mom immigrated to Canada from Germany in 1949. After the ship docked in Quebec, she made her way to Cranbrook and has lived here ever since. Mom’s desire to do her best was a strong part of her personality and work ethic. She was employed as a waitress at the Ritz Cafe, Cranbrook Hotel, York Hotel, as a salesperson at The Emporium Gift Shop and lastly at the Village Inn Restaurant as a short order cook and waitress. Mom loved taking care of her flower garden, enjoyed bowling with dear friends on Friday mornings and loved cooking delicious meals for family dinners. Especially dear to her was camping, tediously poking and tending to the fire and visiting with family and friends. Camp “pot luckâ€? dinners were her favorite, “cabbage rolls for allâ€?! Mom was kind and very generous, she touched many lives and as lovingly referred to as “Grannyâ€? by friends who “adoptedâ€? her as their own. Mom’s Great Grandchildren were very precious to her. She showered each with her love, treasured their visits and enjoyed watching their antics while camping. She was a very strong independent woman who was proud of her Ukrainian Heritage, and proud that she was able to stay in her own home until she was admitted to the hospital in February. Helen is survived by her loving Daughters, Barb (Baron) Quaife and Margaret (Rick) Schrader, Grandchildren Dean (Dallas) Quaife, Kevin (Lisa) Quaife and Christy (Steve) Domonkos, Great Grandchildren Jordan, Kaidynce, Teagan and Kassian Quaife and Cole and Keira Domonkos, and Son-in-Law Bob Patterson. Helen was predeceased by her loving husband Karl Kalinowski in 1993, daughter Louise (Boychuk) Patterson and granddaughter Lori Patterson. Mom’s warmth and understanding Was priceless beyond measure, She was precious to her family Our mother is a Treasure. A service for Helen will be held on Thursday, April 6th, 2017 at 11:00 am McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook. She will be interred in Westlawn Cemetery following the service, and a reception in her honour will follow the interment. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your charity of choice. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

A Mekong River Cruise: Part 1 of 3
Janice Frioult of Maritime Travel takes us on a trip to Vietnam, starting with Ho Chi Minh City
I
n October of 2016 I took an amazing trip to Vietnam and Cambodia. The main focus was an AMA River Cruise, but before and after the cruise I spent time in two amazing cities. First stop Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, formally Saigon. We spent the next few days discovering just a corner of the city and what makes it unique. Saigon is a city of ten million people and six million scooters! The streets are organized chaos, craziness ensues but there is also coordination where bicycles, trishaws, scooters, buses and pedestrians all share space and movement is almost choreographed.
From it’s architecture to the baguettes sold in the markets, Ho Chi Minh City once known as “Paris of the Orient” still retains reminders of its colonial past. In the city center the twin spires of the Notre Dame Cathedral rise into the sky. A few blocks away the newly re-built Reunification Hall, formerly known as the Presidential Palace reminds us of a past when a country was at war. The War Remnants Museum

For me it was the Central Post Office that stood out. This striking building, one of the oldest in Ho Chi Minh, was built in the late 1800’s. It’s a mixture of French, Gothic and Renaissance influence. The interior reminded me of a Europe-
an railway station from the furnishings to the tiled floors to the phone booths! It was lively with tourists but also locals tending to business. The Ben Thanh Market is an iconic landmark where local handicrafts can be purchased. It is a huge structure where inside a maze with twists and turns lead you to a crazy
looking after you from the inside out.

mix of stalls toppling with food, clothing and souvenirs. Pagodas, churches and alters are a common sight throughout the city. Besides Notre Dame Cathedral, we also visited Cha Tam church. As well as historic significance, this beautiful church was constructed with Gothic architecture but cultural factors such as the YinYang roof, triple gates and it’s name were retained . The elaborate dioramas that decorate the outside roof and walls of the Thien Hau Pagoda certainly stood out. But inside, this temple took incense to the next level! Huge pots of incense are strategically placed throughout the worship areas but it was the large coils of incense suspended from the ceiling that captured my attention. A day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnel was a reminder of Vietminh and Vietcong in their wars against the French and Americans. The tunnels cover a distance of 250km. Although I was not brave enough to enter and crawl through the tunnels, (only a quick peak for me) the displays and guided tour (above ground) were a testament to the brilliance of the architec-
ture and the survival instincts of the people. Have I mentioned the food? On the transfer from the airport to our hotel our tour guide advised against a few things, one was taking a trishaw ride and the other was eating street food. Well, we took the trishaw ride, but instead of eating from street vendors, one evening we were taken to a restaurantspecializing in street food. Aisles of fresh food lined the perimeter of the restaurant. Everything was stored in large bowls on ice, you couldn’t doubt the freshness! Many of the
dishes served were wrapped, herbs and greens are integral to Vietnamese food. Dipping sauces accompanied every dish, fish oil being the most popular. Noodles, rice, fresh fish, fresh vegetables, Pho! Every meal in I had in Ho Chi Minh city was wow! The next part of my adventure awaits, the Mekong River cruise … For more information contact Janice Frioult, Branch Partner, Maritime Travel. 250.489.4788. Maritime Travel - We Know Travel Best!
