Wheelchairs for Moldova, Ukraine and Romania Rotary continues annual tradition of bringing wheelchairs to those in need MIKE DAVIES Campbell River Mirror

T

he location of the event may have changed this year, but the cause remains as important as ever. There are over 160 million people in the world who go without a much-needed wheelchair, according to the World Health Organization. Either wheelchairs just aren’t available where they live, or, if they are, they simply can’t afford one. So, for the 11th straight year, Campbell River Rotarians are doing their part to help with that, holding their annual Dancing and Tapas fundraiser to send a container full of wheelchairs to some of those people in need. A shipping container holds 280 wheelchairs, and the organization raises the money to fill it – about $50,000 – over

the course of just this onenight event each year. This year’s culinary and dance experience will take place at the Quinsam Hall on April 29 after being held at North Island College with the help of the school’s culinary arts program since 2008. “North Island College wanted to go a different direction,” Rotarian Tony Fantillo says, “so we’re out at the Quinsam Hall this year, which is a great venue, as well.” They’ve brought Quay West on as caterers and a lot of the chefs that were involved before are still involved, like Hansi Zihlmann, long-time chef at the Discovery Inn before a car accident took him out of the commercial kitchen. Zihlmann began the fundraiser and wheelchair program back in 2006. “So it’s not like the food will suffer at all,” Fantillo says with a laugh. “The food will

Gauging the community’s ability to deal with disaster SRD needs to know how prepared people are MIKE DAVIES Campbell River Mirror

Strathcona Regional District protective services coordinator Shaun Koopman wants to know where you live. Okay, that sounds odd. To clarify, he only wants to know what area of the region you live in. He wants to know some other things, too. Specifically, how prepared you are in the event of an emergency. That’s right. He wants you to fill out a survey. “There are so many different types of household preparedness activities,” Koopman says. “Sure, I have an idea of how many addresses are clearly visible on houses, because I drive around and notice that type of thing, but I can’t know how many people have basic first aid. I don’t know how many people have assessed the Firesmart rating of their house. I don’t know how many people have ‘Grab-n-Go’ bag. The more of that stuff I know, the better I can do my job. If everybody has stockpiled enough food and water, I can back off that message and maybe focus on the fact that only five per cent of people have rated the Firesmart rating of their home, for example, if that’s what the responses

show.” But it’s not just about information collection, Koopman says. It’s also another way for him to inform people about what they need to do to be prepared. While you’re filling out the survey, he says, you also learn a bit more about how prepared you are, just by how many “no” answers you supply. “I’ve already gotten about 500 responses so far,” Koopman says. “I know a lot of people don’t really like doing surveys, but I wouldn’t say people hate this one, because it’s very enlightening.” Maybe you’ve never heard of Firesmart, for example, so you don’t know that you should use it to assess the potential fire danger to your home. “The more of these steps they take, the better our community is going to come through a disaster,” Koopman says. “The more people who secure their china cabinets to the wall, well, that’s fewer injuries that hospital staff are going to have to deal with. I tell people, ‘don’t just think about it from your perspective, think about it as respect for our first responders. You’re putting them in a less dangerous and stressful situation by taking care of yourself.’” Ideally, Koopman says, people will see

SRD protective services coordinator Shaun Koopman says better data means a better response in the event of an emergency, so he’s trying to collect some. how many “no” boxes they check on the survey and take measures to turn them into “yes.” “The biggest thing I tried to do with this survey is keep it cost-low,” Koopman says. “I didn’t ask if you’ve had a seismic engineer assess your home. I didn’t ask if you have fire insurance. These are important things,

sure, but most of the things on the survey are either free or very low cost. I wanted people to be able to be able to turn one ‘no’ into a ‘yes’ every week without that barrier of expense.” The survey is available within this story at campbellrivermirror.com or on the SRD website. It will be open until the end of April. You won’t believe it’s true, now our mom is 60 too

Campbell River to welcome This year’s effort will hundreds of AVICC delegates include physiotherapy KRISTEN DOUGLAS Campbell River Mirror

Up to 300 local government and regional district delegates from across the Island, the Sunshine Coast and Powell River are descending on Campbell River this weekend (April 7-9). The local government representatives will be here as part of the annual Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities (AVICC) conference which Campbell River is hosting for the first time since 2002. Mayor Andy Adams said Campbell Riverites should be on the look out for the visitors. “Rooms have been reserved

at multiple local hotels and local businesses should expect to see more people out and about downtown, especially Saturday,” Adams said. “We encourage local residents to welcome and share their stories with visitors.” The event begins Friday with tours of the new in-progress John Hart Generating Station and drinking water supply system, as well as the new hospital. Opening ceremonies kick off at 2 p.m. at the Campbell River Community Centre and will feature a performance by the Campbell River Children’s Choir and a First Nations celebration song and welcome by Lavern

Henderson. Chris Turner, a sustainability author and expert, will deliver the keynote address at 2:30 p.m. on Vancouver Island’s Place in the Global Energy Transition. The Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre will present information about the upcoming Tribal Journeys event in early August which is being hosted by the We Wai Kai in Campbell River and the Wei Wai Kum on Quadra Island. “The Community Centre halls will be transformed into a path through a live forest, minus the wild animals,” Mayor Adams said in a release. “The meeting rooms will captivate delegates with Eiko Jones’ underwater photography.”

From Page 1 Fantillo says. “Year after year, we sort of wonder, ‘are people going to come?’ and every year, it fills up, we have a great time and fill a great need.” This year’s event will raise the funds needed to deliver a container of wheelchairs to communities in Moldova, Romania and Ukraine in 2019. Each event raises funds for the delivery two years away, so last year’s Wheelchairs for Guatemala fundraiser is providing the chairs for next year’s delivery, for example. They just

got back from delivering the wheelchairs for the people of Bali, which was funded by the 2015 event. Fantillo says the types of wheelchairs they are buying has changed, as well. They’ve gone from a one-size-fits-all-type wheelchair to one that is custom fitted to the user, so from here on out, actual physiotherapists will travel along when the delivery is made to fit each chair to its user. It adds to the cost slightly, but Fantillo says it will be worth it. “It’s not that much more. They’re about $200 (up from about $175) but there are more choices and making them fit the

individual is really a big bonus. If we don’t raise enough to fill a container, we can always invite other Rotary clubs to help us out, and we’ll make sure it’s full.” Tickets for the event are $50 and are available at Needle & Arts Centre on Shoppers Row, Amy’s Asian Foods and Cafe, either Campbell River Metro Liquor location (Discovery Plaza and Timberline Village). Anyone interested in donating to either the silent or live auction at the event can contact Fantillo directly by email at ando7779@shaw.ca. He’ll be happy to sell you a ticket to the celebration.

skate across Canada, 7,800 km on the Trans Canada Highway from Victoria to St. John’s. Almost seven years later, in 1974, after learning no one had ever roller skated across the U.S.A, he decided to do that as well. He skated east to west, this time from Battery Park, N.Y. to Santa Monica, Calif. During that trip he set the world record, skating 170 km in one day from Clines Corners to Laguna, N.M. In 1975, he set the world record again for Marathon Roller Skating on a roller rink, seven days, 15 hours and seven minutes. To commemorate his trip 50 years ago, as well as celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary, Shaw is driving across the country. This time he hopes to raise money for Ronald McDonald House along the way.

the Campbell River Airport. Council elected to scrap the original plan to buy a used airport fuel truck after just a single bid to provide the truck materialized from the tender issued by the city earlier this year. Clinton Crook, the city’s senior buyer, told council in a report that airport staff found several problems with the submission as the used vehicle was a 2006 model from the United States. That meant the fuel tanks, pumps and associated equipment would need to be re-certified to meet Canadian standards. Crook said further that the vehicle only came with a 30 day/3,000 mile mechanical warranty and the useful life of the used fuel vehicle could only be determined upon inspection. He added that there was a likely chance that other unforeseen costs would arise “to hire different industry professionals to ensure a used fuel truck meets regulatory compliance as well as mechanical suitability.” Crook said that at the end of the day, “it would be more advantageous

The trucks are a key piece of the city’s new Airport Fuel Facility which, in its entirety, is now forecast to cost the city $1.3 million. The entire cost, though, will not be borne by the city. A $903,750 grant from the BC Air Access Program (BCAP), ultimately pays for 75 per cent of the project’s costs. “As such, the over budget amount for purchasing two new trucks with funding available from savings from the

BCAP grant would allow the city to receive two new trucks…without the requirements and potential issues of a used truck…and would provide the city with a full useful life estimated to exceed 20 years,” Crook wrote in his report to council. “This would also reduce the annual operating exepenses of the airport department as the annual fleet charge would include a much higher capital replacement cost under the city’s fleet model for a used fuel truck versus a new truck with a much longer useful life.” Mayor Andy Adams said he is appreciative of the work city staff put in to come to that conclusion. “Really appreciate the work staff has done in working the numbers so we’ll have top of the line equipment to serve the community,” Adams said.

Coun. Colleen Evans agreed. “This is a good news story for Campbell River,” Evan said, adding that the BCAP grant has “really enabled us to move forward on this initiative.” The new above ground fuel storage system will replace the existing, underground fueling system run by Imperial Oil which is nearing the end of its life span and was unlikely to be replaced. The new system is expected to save on fuel costs and will offer a permanent medevac operational area, which will provide direct acccess to emergency fuel for ambulances, aircraft and dedicated fuel trucks to help support 24/7 operations. The new fuel delivery trucks are expected to be delivered this fall, with the first arriving in Campbell River in October and the second in November.

We’ll hear a lot of talk about “raw logs” in the next few weeks, as B.C. political parties position themselves for the May 9 vote. “Raw logs” is the emotional buzzword designed to bring the issue down to the bumper-sticker level of modern political debate. NDP politicians denounce the BC Liberals for presiding over a “500 per cent” increase in log, sorry, “raw log” exports, as sawmills have closed. The BC Liberals respond that more jobs would be lost if further restrictions were put on log exports, the NDP doesn’t care about loggers, and so forth. Fortunately, BC Stats has just produced its annual export trade figures. They tell more of the story. There has indeed been a steep increase in log exports to China, from next to nothing in 2007 to more than $400 million by value in 2016. Log exports to the U.S. declined 10 years ago

and have ticked along at about $50 million a year since. Log export value to Japan is consistently three times that of the U.S. in the past decade. They particularly like our coastal red cedar, and pay handsomely for it. Looking at export figures for sawn lumber, you begin to see that log exports are mostly a political sideshow. The U.S., China and Japan are B.C.’s leading customers here as well, with lumber value running as much as 10 times log value in a given year. Lumber exports to China climbed from minimal to nearly $1.5 billion a year by 2014, helping to keep B.C. sawmills running after the

collapse of the U.S. housing market. As the U.S. has recovered, and the expiry of its border restrictions has created a fragile window of free trade in B.C. lumber, B.C. exports south have soared, reaching more than $4.5 billion in 2016. Japan remains a steady and vital premium lumber customer, with export values of around $800 million annually. Note that lumber sales to Japan alone are worth as much as B.C.’s total log exports to the world. China’s emergence as a major wood customer follows expensive marketing efforts over many years by the forest industry, the federal government and B.C. Now that our exports south are under threat again, Asia becomes more important than ever.

Getting the word out

Forest policies need to add up VIEWS

Fraud prevention month has come and gone, and if a recent survey is any indication, not many of us noticed. The survey showed an overall lack of interest in what really is a major and ongoing problem. Questioning people about their cyber security and fraud prevention attitudes and practices, the survey showed that about a third of B.C. residents were indifferent when they read about fraud in the news. In addition, the survey found that almost 40 per cent of the respondents either didn’t have or didn’t know if they had anti-virus protection on their devices. We’re sure that all the hackers, scam artists and cyber criminals are sending them all a really big thank you right now. We’re not saying people should take vigilance to a paranoid level, but indifference is exactly what the cyber criminals are looking for. It’s easy to put the blame for fraud on the victim, with an “I wouldn’t have been fooled by that,” but the truth is, we all get fooled at one point or another. Educating yourself and staying aware is about the only way to lessen the risk, because fraudsters generally aren’t going to come up with new ways to pick your pockets, just add some new variations to old schemes. There is an overwhelming amount of media out there, and being tired of trying to cope with it may be one cause of the indifference found in the survey. But the same rapidly evolving technology that brings you that media, also works for the scammers, whether they get into your home via the Internet, your phone or plain, old-fashioned mail. Educating yourself is the only proven way to steer clear of scammers. Being vigilant doesn’t mean living in fear or changing your password on a daily basis. But you do need to be aware.

The BC Liberals say much of the increase in log exports is from remote locations with no mill option available. That’s places like the Great Bear Rainforest, where logging continues under new rules. The BC Green Party has announced it would extend carbon tax to slash pile burning, to force logging companies to sell wood waste for pellets or other uses. The forests ministry already does this by policy. It’s required when there is “clear demand” such as a pellet plant, where businesses would generally make the deal without government instruction. David Elstone, executive director of the Truck Loggers’ Association, argues the forest industry should get a break from carbon tax on fuel, since wood structures and products sequester carbon for longer than natural forests, where wood rots and releases carbon dioxide back the atmosphere.

On Monday, March 27, city council approved Destination Think! to guide the future of tourism for Campbell River. Four days later, Destination Think! sat down with the newly-appointed members of the Tourism Advisory Committee, and the following Monday issued a posting for a full-time destination marketing executive manager to be based in Campbell River. Now, they are putting the pieces together to host a public open house to hear from the community. “Council is extremely pleased

with Destination Think! and the speed at which they are putting the building blocks in place, engaging with the Tourism Advisory Committee members, and planning on reaching out to the community and tourism stakeholders,” says Campbell River Mayor Andy Adams in a press release. “Discussions are already underway to plan visitor information services for this spring and summer season.” “We are seeking someone to fill this full-time role on site in Campbell River for the next three to five years who is equally skilled in managing relationships and delivering year-round marketing strategies and a visitor services program,” says Rodney Payne, CEO of Destination Think! “As the leading advocate

for the city’s destination management, this position will regularly report to city council and to the Tourism Advisory Committee on the opportunities, plans and successes with destination marketing initiatives. The position will also provide educational programs to support further development and promotion by local tour operators. Destination management is something we will all collaborate on together, which is why working with local tourism operators to collectively move tourism forward is a key responsibility for this position.” Find the link for the executive manager posting at: linkedin.com/jobs/ view/308497163/ “Working on behalf of the city, with guidance from the Tourism Advisory

Committee, these are two important steps that will keep the momentum rolling on delivering innovative tourism services that promote Campbell River around the world,” says City Manager Deborah Sargent. “We are currently in a transition phase where Destination Think! will take over destination marketing responsibilities over the next several weeks.” Local tourism operators will have an opportunity to meet members of the new tourism team during an open house later this month. More details on where and when the open house will take place will be provided soon. Destination Think! is launching the new tourism strategy that was developed based on extensive community consultation.

Want a vivacious and vibrant wine for Easter? – Pick a Rosé! Adventurous wine explorers realized long ago that most Rosés are just red wine lovers’ white wines. Crafted in most cases from red wine grapes that are pressed just after picking with minimal skin contact, great Rosés fill out the white wine flavour spectrum – lemons, grapefruit, green apple, melon gooseberry, kiwi fruit and honeysuckle – with subtle red berry and spice flavours. With Easter coming up next weekend, there’s a good chance you’ll be looking for an easy sipping wine to pair with whatever you choose to serve. Rosés are easy to pair with almost any dish from white fish and salmon through

chicken, duck, turkey and ostrich to pasta, pizza, pork, alligator, steak and buffalo. And Rosés come in an amazing variety of styles – from fun and frivolous to dustily dry and elegant… and everything in between! Begging not to be taken seriously by wine aficionados Zentini Rosé Pamplemousse (298828) $13.99 needs to be chilled or - better yet! – poured over ice. Gently sparkling, it overflows with candied lemon rind and sweet pink grapefruit flavours. At 8 per cent alcohol by volume, it might be the perfect breakfast wine. Situated north of Venice between Valdobbiadene and Conegliano in primo

Prosecco country Villa Sandi is a breathtaking Palladian style masterpiece dating back to 1622. It is also the main office of these Veneto vintners. Bended from Glera – the true Prosecco grape – and Pinot Noir, Villa Sandi ‘Il Fresco’ Rosé (855502) $14.99 is a sparkling Rosato Brut that showcases subtle strawberry and blackberry notes over the classic lemon, apple and pear flavours we expect from great Prosecco. Southeast of Cesena in Romagna in north-eastern Italy between the Apennines and the sea, Poderi dal Nespoli make a wide range of still and sparkling white and red wines from Trebbiano,

Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Sangiovese, Pinot Nero and Merlot. They also make Rosé! Poderi dal Nespoli’s Filarino Sangiovese Rosé (527986) $15.85 is a deep pink colour. Aromas and flavours of roses, pomegranate and blood oranges over a core of lemon, grapefruit and fresh cut green apple flavours. Pick this one if you’re pairing wine with pork!

Awash with Chardonnay and Shiraz, Australian winemakers seldom send us any Rosé. From their base in the Yarra Valley, Innocent Bystander offers a full range of wines. Sadly, only their Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Moscato have made it to British Columbia. A blend of Gordo and Black Muscat, bottled under a crown cap for easy picnic access, Innocent Bystander Moscato (861732) $19.90 is a seductive sparkling wine. Gorgeous rose petal and peach aromas set the stage for a mouthful of cherry, strawberry and raspberry flavours. At 5.5 per cent

alcohol by volume, this is an excellent choice for sunny afternoon sipping. Deeply involved with Naramata’s Nichol Vineyards, Matthew Sherlock and Ross Hackworth are also the folks behind the Lock & Worth Winery. Lock & Worth’s wonderfully straightforward mission is to craft “high quality, single vineyard, small production wines that are priced reasonably from British Columbia.” The ultra minimalist label of Lock & Worth Cabernet France Rosé (29240) $20.40 makes it clear that they don’t spend excessive sums on graphic design. From grapes planted in 2008, un-fined and unfiltered, their Cabernet Franc Rosé is bright and fresh, with sassy fresh sliced apple, strawberry, raspberry and plum aromas and flavours. The spiritual home of some of the most elegant Rosés is

Côtes de Provence on France’s southern Mediterranean coast. Domaine Ott was founded by Marcel Ott in 1896. Today – more than 120 years later - cousins JeanFrançois and Christian Ott carry on that tradition. From Domaine Ott’s Château de Selle cellars, BY.OTT (762940) $52.99 is a new Côtes de Provence Rosé. Delicately pink with orange undertones, it teases the nose with subtle aromas of white peach and apricot mixed with passion fruit and mango. Full bodied and bright, it features flavours of lemon and grapefruit and notes of red berries with a sprinkling of dusty clove and cardamom in the finish. Be adventurous! Take a look at a bottle of Rosé to grace your glass as you serve your Easter feast! To reach WineWise: douglas_sloan@ yahoo.com, www. dougsloanwinewise. com

CR Singers celebrate Spring on the River Spring has sprung and so, the Campbell River Singers cordially invite you to their annual Spring Concert on Sunday, April 23 at 2:30 p.m. at the Campbell River Baptist Church. Choir Director John Montgomery has picked a variety of pieces from many genres and ages, sure to entertain audiences of all ages and music tastes. The Cole Porter song, Anything Goes describes the program accurately, as the Campbell River Singers offer the audience everything from a 16th Century madrigal to The Beach Boys, with stops in between. Canadian Oscar Peterson’s Hymn to Freedom holds the hope for liberty, dignity, and harmony for all. Watu Wote, sung partly in Swahili, continues that theme of all the world singing together in harmony as one voice.

There wil be Canadian and American folk songs, ranging from the haunting Shenandoah to the silly Bile Them Cabbage Down Sea Shanties. Rousing Gospel tunes will bring the audience to the fun and familiar, Best of the Beach Boys, and Paul Simon’s timeless Bridge Over Troubled Water. Dodd’s Furniture and Mattress held its grand opening last Saturday to celebrate the company’s newest location, in Campbell River. Gordy, and son Love Dodd, signed over the lease from Sears last August, making it the pair’s third store owned and operated by the Dodd’s family. Both Gordy and Love Dodd were on hand Saturday for a grand opening event that included games for kids, Sno-Kones, cotton candy and hot dogs. Mayor Andy Adams also attended the event, accepting the honour of cutting the ribbon with a large pair of bright red scissors. The 20,000 square foot building underwent $100,000 in

Chronic Pain: Mindfulness and Management By Robyn Smalley, B.Sc Kin MBCAK, Practicing Kinesiologist with Heart Strong Fitness

Your nervous system is your body’s warning system; however, with a chronic pain disorder, that warning system becomes inaccurate. Think of your pain system as a car alarm, the purpose of it is to alert you of danger. Sometimes, the alarm system breaks down and goes off when there is no danger. The alarm has the same warning sounds and provoke the same feelings but with an inaccurate threat. Living with chronic pain can be like living with a faulty car alarm system.

How do we learn to decipher these pain warnings and manage it in our daily lives? The key word in management of chronic pain is Mindfulness. Mindfulness is the awareness and acknowledgement of your bodily state and surroundings. Keep in mind the following tips when living with chronic pain: • Focus on Function – A goal to increase your day-to-day function is more realistic than just working on

DON’T LET SEASONAL ALLERGIES GET IN YOUR WAY. Drug free treatment protocols. Food and environmental sensitivity testing.

reducing pain. Your pain system will adapt and become desensitized with the gradual (and safe) increase of activity and function. Don’t let pain dictate your daily activities. • Breathing and Sleep – Being mindful of your sleep patterns and encouraging adequate sleep cycles is important to let your body recover and “reset” from your day. Sleep hygiene strategies include getting rid of

• Activity – When beginning activities to help manage chronic pain, it’s important to begin slowly and with movements that do not increase pain symptoms. Pacing your activity and creating SMART

What symptoms occur with post-concussion syndrome and can chiropractic help? Patients suffering from postconcussion syndrome will typically suffer with: headaches, dizziness, fatigue, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, loss of concentration and memory, Dr. Franchesca Lee DC or noise and light sensitivity. NUCCA Chiropractor Although post-concussion syndrome originally results from a traumatic head injury, it may not be the brain itself that requires therapy. Hitting your head hard enough to damage the brain means you’ve hit your head hard enough to damage your upper neck. Headaches persisting past the 6 week mark may indicate of an injury to the upper cervical spine and the nerves that innervate the skull. Upper-cervical chiropractic has demonstrated that a structural correction of the upper neck can reduce irritation of these nerves and also improve blood flow to the brain which may aid in healing.

Living with a chronic pain condition affects you not only physically, but psychologically, socially, and emotionally. The key to management is being mindful of how these factors interact and approach controlling pain from multiple directions.

distractions (noise, light, sound) and creating consistent sleep routines. Proper breathing techniques can help calm your body before sleep, and also help during activity. Diaphragmatic breathing provides benefits such as decreased muscles tension, decreased heart rate and reducing production of the stress hormone cortisol.

Chronic pain can be classified into two categories: mechanical and non-mechanical. Mechanical pain is a result of a structural abnormality. This can be from an injury, joint problems or osteoarthritis. Nonmechanical pain is a nervous system or pain system disorder such as persistent pain or fibromyalgia.

Fishing Corner Each week I get a number of people commenting on local fishing conditions for trout in the Campbell River area and sometimes I put it into my “Believe or Not” folder. Let’s begin with Roberts Lake. The comment was, “it is stocked every year and that there is no fish to be had.” Roberts Lake has not been stocked for many years and, yes, there is lunker trout being caught from early spring to late fall. Most anglers who go for the big one will troll in water 180 feet deep and when the trout are hitting, it’s pretty good action. While

the fish are there, it will take some time to figure out the area where the big ones are holding but if you find a drop-off point and fish a certain speed, many trout up to two pounds can be caught. The fly fishing zone is on the north end of the lake and fishing the area close to the weed bed can be good. The area around the boat

launch can be good and fish about 30 yards in the deeper water. Spin casting can be effective from now to end of April but I found May is the best in early season. On the south end of the lake, turn right on the short gravel road coming from Campbell River and then park and walk in a few hundred yards and fish off the floating wharf

Glossy magazines showcase all the beautiful summer flowering bulbs that you can add to your garden in the Spring and enjoy all summer long. Lilies, peonies, dahlias, glads and callas are all in stock for you to choose from now.

Gladioli are one of those flowers that give us that vertical interest in the garden that makes a statement. Glads are great cut flowers adding, even more, drama to a big vase. Gladioli are easy to grow and bloom about 100 days after planting. Lift your glad bulbs late September and store in a frost-free place then re-plant each spring after April 1st.

and flowers. Peonies have delicate flowers but are prairie tough for winter hardiness, and even this past bitter cold winter hasn't hurt my peonies at all (in fact I think they liked it!). The lacy foliage of peonies is also quite lovely, enhancing the garden throughout the summer, and finally turning shimmery plum shades in the fall. Peonies are very deer resistant which brings a smile to many a gardener's face.

In early spring you can buy peony tubers and plant them out in your garden. Peonies are a perennial that prefers not to be moved so try to plant them where you want them long term. Don't bury them too deeply or they will not bloom well, and as with all flowering bulbs, tubers and corms add bonemeal or rock phosphate at planting to encourage roots

Dahlias make wonderful cut flowers and are also beautiful garden plants. They are fantastic for late summer and fall weddings, and market gardeners harvest and sell dahlias because the more you pick, the more they bloom. Dahlias are quite deer resistant making them well loved up and down Vancouver Island. Lift your dahlia tubers late September and store in a frost-free place then re-plant each spring after April 1st.

Lilies are very easy to grow, and the selection of colour, shape and fragrance makes them workhorses in the garden. They are extremely winter-hardy and will get bigger and better each season. By adding a variety of lily types to your garden, you can have lilies in bloom nearly all summer long! Blooming starts with the Asiatic Lilies, then Trumpet Lilies, Tigers Lilies, Oriental Lilies and last but certainly not least very large growing Tree Lilies. Because these all bloom at slightly different times you can have lilies blooming from late June to early September. This group of true lilies is hardy enough to be left in the ground year-round in Campbell River.

Git yer country on for the Association for Commmunity Living fundraiser

Hoo-ee! Shine up yer boots and hitch up yer britches for the Denim and Diamonds Country Hoedown, a country-themed fundraiser to help Campbell River and District Association for Community Living raise funds for a new wheelchair accessible van. The Campbell River and District Association for Community Living (CRDACL) is a non-profit organization that provides and advocates for local services to support people of all ages, from children to adults with special needs, their families and caregivers. The organization has five group homes and many day programs, most of which have wheelchair accessible vans to assist in getting participants to various locations within the community. One of the group homes currently has a minivan which no longer fits the needs of the clients, as four of

the five individuals require wheelchairs for mobility. Due to the van’s size and inability to accommodate wheelchairs, it does not allow for all clients and staff to fit. Unfortunately, vehicles are not included in the association’s budget from funders, and is therefore fundraising for $74,000, the cost of the Promaster Van needed for the group home. Community Living BC, the association’s major funder, is contributing towards the cost of the van. The Denim and Diamonds Country Hoedown will feature music provided by the band Boondock, a live and silent auction and line dancing. Also, Beachfire Brewery will be on site serving their craft beer. All tickets to the event will also have a chance of winning a $2,500 Diamond Pendant from Thong’s Jewelry as the door prize (you

must be present to win). The event will be held at the Eagles Hall from 6 p.m. – 12:30 a.m. Tickets can be purchased for $50, or a table

of eight for $350. Tickets are for sale at: CRADACL Office: 1153 Greenwood Street; SCDP Office: #205-301 Dogwood Street;and Coastal

Community Credit Union – Discovery Harbour and Willow Point branches. For more information, contact Jennifer Holme at 250-286-0391.

The rear seats recline and the back doors open slightly wider. Here’s a fascinating fact trail: The steering wheel is centered and the gas pedal and dead pedals are placed at shoulder width. The seats were designed using NASA data to provide an ideal body position! As long as you don’t expect to take off like one of their rockets you will be happy with the comfort afforded. Which brings me to what’s under the hood. The power plant is a trusty 2.5-litre engine, supported by a six-speed auto transmission: sufficient power at 187 hp, to enable to do the job with the whole dang family aboard. There is a 2.0-litre 150 hp engine in the base model, matched to a six-speed manual transmission but I would pass on that. A 2.2-litre diesel is promised soon and that should be interesting, from a fuel economy perspective alone. There are three trims, the FWD GX being the base model selling for $24,900. Mazda expects most Canadian buyers to take the better equipped GS edition at $29,100. A GT edition with the Technology package tops out at $36,300. Competition is savage in this market segment but Mazda feels it has done enough to challenge the competitors in the shape of the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape and the Nissan Rogue. Agreed.

Safety Tip: With the weather getting milder, it’s a good time to give your vehicle a spring tune-up. If you have winter tires, swap them for good condition all-seasons. Change your wiper fluid if you were using an anti-freeze solution and replace your wiper blades if they’re cracked or rigid.

Heather Elaine Goll Heather passed away on March 28th, 2017 at Hospice in Comox, BC. Born in Flin Flon, Manitoba on September 26th, 1951. We sadly announce the passing of Heather after a 2 year battle with cancer. Heather was born in Flin Flon, MB. She moved to Campbell River, BC in 1986. Heather loved the outdoors. Anything to do with hiking, camping, and fishing thrilled her. Gardening was a passion of hers. Digging for antique bottles and treasures was also a hobby she enjoyed. She spent most of her working career cooking in camps and restaurants, one of which was a family business. Her cooking career took her on many travel adventures which included Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, and the BC coast. Time spent with her family and friends was always important to her. The family wishes to thank Dr. Howard for his compassionate care and all the staff at Hospice for their care, support, and kindness. A Celebration of Life will be held on a later date. If anyone wishes, donations to the Valley Hospice Society would be appreciated. Please join us in remembering Heather by visiting our memorial at www. piercysmtwashingtonfuneral.com.

For this is a journey that we all must take And each must go alone. It’s all part of the Master’s plan. A step on the road to home When you are lonely and sick of heart, Go to the friends we know And bury your sorrow in doing good deeds.

In loving memory of

the final kicks and the Riptide prevailed over a great team from Nanaimo. The U15 boys are hosting a Coastal Cup quarterfinal game this Sunday at 1 p.m. against West Van FC at the Comox Valley Turf. NIC gets funding to launch film training program MIKE DAVIES Campbell River Mirror

Vancouver Island residents and First Nations members will soon have more opportunity to get involved in local television and film productions when those productions come to the region. Minister for Social Development and Social Innovation Michelle Stilwell, North Island College (NIC) board members, Joan Miller of the Vancouver Island North Film Commission and representatives from local

MIKE DAVIES/CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Minister for Social Development and Social Innovation Michelle Stilwell (left) and Joan Miller of the Vancouver Island North Film Commission celebrated the announcement of the pilot program beginning this September. First Nations, made the announcement March 30 at the Campbell River campus of NIC.

The $488,000 pilot project consists of two separate specialized trades programs, offered

in both Campbell River and Port Alberni, which will train carpentry and electrical journeypersons and apprentices to take on roles in set construction Because B.C. is so attractive to film we need to ensure that when they come here, we have a trained workforce available for them to use on their projects, particulary here on Vancouver Island, which this announcement makes a reality, Miller says. Vancouver and the rest of the Lower Mainland, Miller says, is seeing a huge boom in large-bud-

get productions being filmed and produced in the area, but small and medium-sized budget productions are being squeezed out of that area. They still want to work here in B.C., but the fact that trained crew members had to be brought in from the Lower Mainland added to the cost of production, which was a hinderance for some, Miller says. “The pilot program announced today is the first step toward building crew capacity here,” Miller says, so that

Province funding tourism marketing The government is investing more than $280,000 to support marketing by provincial tourism sectors. Shirley Bond, minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour made the announcement on Thursday. “We want to ensure that Northern Vancouver Island has the opportunity to build on their success and

continue to tell your story,” she said. The investment is made through Destination BC’s Co-op Marketing Partnerships Program and will support a number of projects in Campbell River and other communities throughout the province. The enhanced marketing campaigns will promote saltwater fishing, freshwater fishing, sport fishing, ocean

boating and diving. The grants will be delivered by partnering with the BC Ocean Boating Tourism Association, Sport Fishing Institute, BC Fishing Resorts and Outfitters Association, Freshwater Fisheries Society of British Columbia, Tourism Port Hardy, Tourism Campbell River , the Dive Industry Association of BC and many more.

It is expected that the additional investment will help draw more visitors to the Campbell River and surrounding communities. Tourism is one of B.C.’s largest industries, a key sector of the BC Jobs Plan and a significant job creator. The province enjoys a competitive tourism advantage thanks to diverse and scenic landscapes, world-class tourism

MANAGING YOUR MONEY Tips to help parents ease adult children out For many years, you’ve helped them out. Now it’s time to ease them out. Your adult children still living at home, that is. According to Statistics Canada, 42% of young adults age 20 to 29 live with their parents, which is a significant increase from 30 years ago, and almost one quarter of young adults are “boomerang kids” who have returned to their parental home after leaving at some point in the past.* Young adults, even those working full-time, choose to continue living with their parents for many, often financially-driven, reasons – from paying down the costs of their post-secondary education to saving for a house – but leaving the nest is an important rite of passage for both parents and their adult children. So here are some practical tips on how to ease your kids out of the house and into a responsible adult life. Plan for it Help your youngster develop a realistic shorter- and longer-term life plan with achievable goals. Ensure they are contributing to a savings plan – a TFSA and/or RRSP, for example – to establish good fiscal habits before they leave home. Set a “move out” deadline It could be a “time” deadline – three months, six months, a year – or a “milestone” deadline – for example, six months after your child gets a job. Either way, be firm. Shut down the parental ATM Don’t be

your adult child’s cash machine. Paying their own way is the only way to learn the “real life” costs of day-to-day living and the difference between a “want” and a “need”. If your child asks for money, offer it in the form of a loan that requires regular, specified payments. Pay to stay That could mean paying rent, helping to pay for the food they eat, and/ or a portion of the expenses for using your vehicle(s). Lower the comfort level Stop cleaning their room, doing their laundry, making dental and other appointments for them. Consider “transitional” accommodation Have your child arrange for a brief “paid” stay with another family member or friend to help them prepare for the costs they’ll face when they’re on their own. Know when to say “no” Your child may ask you to co-sign for an apartment rental or car loan – think twice before you do it. If your child defaults, you’ll be held responsible and your credit may be damaged. Being a parent is a life-long gift and it’s natural to want to help your children get a good start in life. But it’s equally true that when your children take longer to become self-sufficient, it creates financial challenges for you. That’s why you should discuss your situation with your professional advisor to make sure your financial life stays on track. *Statistics Canada 2011 Census

Cancer research donor to tackle Canada KRISTEN DOUGLAS Campbell River Mirror

Since the day he was born, Jacob Koomen has never been one to shy away from a challenge. “My dad says ‘you’ll always be an adventurer.’ I’m not sure I can count how many times I got lost as a kid and my parents had to find me,” Koomen says. Now at the age of 69, is preparing to tackle a long-time goal of his – a cycle trip across Canada. “I’ve talked to people who have done it and everyone says it’s tough but well worth it and I thought, ‘before I turn 70, I have to do it,’” Koomen says. “My dad is going to be 98 and he said do it now because when you’re my age you can’t. He’s really excited about it.” For Koomen, it’s no ordinary trip. He’ll be riding under the banner of the Ride2Survive – a single day 400-kilometre

Jacob Koomen participated in last year’s Ride2Survive, a one-day cycle event from Kelowna to Delta. This year Koomen will be riding under that same banner but is stepping up the challenge and cycling across Canada. ride from Kelowna to Delta in support of cancer research. For the past five years, Koomen has cycled in the Ride2Survive But always one to push himself, Koomen has decided to take it to the next level and ride across the country. All the proceeds will go to the Canadian Cancer Society, via the Ride2Survive, and Koomen will pay for his travel costs out of his own pocket. His wife, Jannie, will be his support system, following Koomen in the couple’s van and tiny trailer which will be their home away

from home. Koomen departs Campbell River on June 2 and intends to travel on average, 125 kilometres each day, weather dependent. The trip in total is 7,500 kilometres if he cycles straight across the country, but he’s debating making a detour through the Maritimes which would potentially add another 500 clicks to his trip. Either way, Koomen - who’s been a member of the River City Cycle Club since its inception in 2006 – says he’s raring to go. He’s done a couple of training rides out to Buckley

Bay (128 kilometres) and to Roberts Lake. “I’m ready now, my adrenaline is ready but I have to wait,”

Koomen says. “Physically, it’s no problem but there’s always questions going through your head. When people say, ‘are you scared?’ I say, if you’re scared you better not do it. I could step out of my house and break my leg.” Koomen says he’s heard from others who have made the journey that the hardest part of the trip is getting through northern Ontario because of the black flies and the mosquitoes.
