Proven Joint Pain Relief
Single Herbs & Extracts Now On Sale
The analgesic properties of methyl-sulfonyl-methane (MSM) have long been recognized and many people with osteoarthritis use MSM to relieve joint pain, thereby reducing reliance on non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs that can have serious side effects. MSM may improve a person’s mobility by slowing the breakdown of cartilage, enhancing the body’s inflammatory response, and stimulating the formation of new joint and connective tissues. Improved mobility means a better quality of life, improved athletic ability, joint flexibility, and comfort.

BBQ time...
A healthy diet will have a massive impact on our children's lifelong health. A family that eats well will be happier, more productive, sick less and have more time for the important things. One of the most important ways I aim to support my children's health is by feeding them good healthy food with lots of vegetables! Here are some ways that I am trying to ensure that my children are healthy and diverse eaters.
We are proud to bring you Comox Valley's Victorian Acres Farm and their local, pasture-raised, grass-fed and finished hereford beef. Their offerings are a perfect addition to our expanding range of ethically-raised, organic, wild and free-pastured meats, now including pasture raised pork from Berryman Farms located on the Saanich Peninsula.
Barbara's
Setting Standards As parents, we define food for our children. When we put food on the table, by how we talk about food, and by what we eat as adults. In our house we strive for a whole foods diet, minimal packaged food and half a plate of veggies with most meals. My boys are not surprised to come to the table and see tons of vegetables because that is how it has been every day since they were babies. They also know that our kitchen contains very little packaged food so they tend not ask for snacks that are unhealthy as they know it's simply not available.

Tree Island makes grass-fed, artisan yogurt at their production plant in the Comox Valley. They use 100% fresh whole BC milk, carefully select the best ingredients and handcraft their yogurt in small batches using a traditional, slow-kettle cooking method. Try the new seasonal Haskap Berry yogurt.
How we talk about food will have an impact on how are children think and feel about it. Since I genuinely enjoy the food that I prepare I try to express that to my children regardless if it's some sauteed kale or chocolate cake. I try to avoid cultural references that paint healthy foods in a negative light.
Defining Expectations Our culture has a concept of “kids food” that I feel undermines our ability to feed a variety of nutritious foods to children (nowhere is this more obvious than on “kids menus” at restaurants). Of course, children do tend to have more sensitive palates (regarding spice for example) but we can respect that and still offer a wide variety of foods with the expectation that they will eat it. My children constantly surprise me by what they do and do not prefer to eat so I try never to assume I know how my child will respond to a new food (and never tell them that they will not like something in advance).
Children Are Creatures Of Habit
GT's
Grass-Fed Artisan Greek Yogurt
Green Is Not A Dirty Word Healthy and delicious are not opposites.
As soon as my children were able to safely consume a food, it has been served to them on their plate. For example, salad is difficult for babies to eat but as soon as they could safely eat salad it has been on their plate as has every other vegetable dish, starting with very small portions. Sometimes they eat more, sometimes they eat less, that is up to them. By serving all of the food available to them, my hope is that I am making the statement, this is food that you can eat (instead of “this is adult food, this is kid food”).

Written by Dr. Alexis Blanks, ND
I've noticed that the more variety in foods and flavours that I expose my children to the more likely they are to be open to different foods. Once I get into a rut and start serving the same food to my kids the more resistant become to trying something new. This is particularly important for one of my children who is more sensitive and finds change more difficult.
Talk With Your Children About Food Mealtimes are a great time to converse about food and nutrition. Talking about eating a rainbow encourages children to eat a variety of vegetables. Talking about what foods contain fat, protein and carbohydrates and how these nutrients help us feel our best, help children understand their plate better and helps with trouble shooting at meal times. “If you don't like the chicken that I made, where will your protein come from for this meal?”
Only One Meal Is Served Mix it up or break it down. Sometimes my kids want food that is more plain then what I would like. One way that I offer alternatives without preparing two separate meals is by setting aside some of the ingredients in my meals so that my children have the option of the dish that I've prepared or the component parts eaten separately. I try to ensure that at least some elements of the meal are things they really like. In conclusion, feeding kids is not easy and my kids are no different then yours. They are constantly changing, what worked one day doesn't work the next. There are some days that I am right there with you, tearing my hair out! These are some of the ways that we have managed to get good nutrition into our kids with the hopes that they will grow up to be healthy diverse eaters, stronger for the good food they have eaten. DR. Stars shine at JazzFest Kyle Wells At least two Victoria Jazzfest headliners will be here to tell you there is light at the end of the tunnel. When asked about his reaction to the modern political climate, Ziggy Marley explains that from his point of view, what’s happening now is what’s always been happening. “It’s kind of highlighted more, but we’ve always had issues with leadership in this human society,” Marley said. “Those who are put in a position of power seem not to have the ability or the will to really make this world a better place for the majority of humanity.” But the beloved reggae musician, and son of Bob Marley, doesn’t let it get him down. On the contrary, Marley is as ready as ever to spread his vision of love and humanity through his music, as he’ll be doing when he hits the Royal Theatre stage June 25. “They would love for us to get demoralized … that’s a part of the program, get us in that state of mind where we become stagnant and like ‘shit, I give up, there’s nothing we can do,’” Marley said. “We always bring the balance, we always bring the truth and the positivity so the people realize, don’t give up. That is our job, our mission, our purpose.” For Mavis Staples, the beloved soul singer, it’s the people themselves who keep her energized to record and perform. “The people keep me inspired,” Staples said, via email. “They make me feel so good first and foremost by coming out. To see them smiling, crying, and cheering, that keeps me going me and reminds me to keep on.” Staples has been performing since childhood, most notably with her family band, The Staple Singers, who had two Number 1 singles in

the 1970s with “I’ll Take You There” and “Let’s Do it Again.” A recent career resurgence came from a fruitful collaboration with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and a popular documentary chronicling Staples’ life and career, titled Mavis!. Now she’s set to play the Royal Theatre on June 23. “I’m excited to share some newer material from our 2016 release Livin’
On A High Note … along with some Staple Singers we’ve been doing for years,” Staples said. “We’ll also certainly add in some songs we did with Jeff Tweedy from You Are Not Alone, as well as One True Vine. We’re planning on having a good, fun time with y’all.” The Victoria International Jazzfest runs from June 23 to July 2. Visit jazzvictoria.ca for information and tickets.
Cari Burdett plays free show in Centennial Square Genevieve Nickel Local musician and opera trained Cari Burdett, will be performing a free show at Victoria’s upcoming International Jazz Festival in Centennial Square on June 26 from noon to 1:15 p.m. Burdett and her quartet plan to play some sensual tunes for their single performance in the ten-day Jazz Festival. As a crowd pleaser for the festival, Burdett wanted to move away from her usual moody music, such as songs featured in her most recent album Magnolia, and wanted to offer something more playful. One of the songs to look out for is her interpretation of 1940’s “Mon coeur est un violon” by Lucienne Boyer in which Burdett’s voice flirts with the violinist. She admits her music, which is best described as dramatic cabaret, is not strictly Jazz. Rather, it is “a collection of languages, stories and memories,” Burdett said. She attributes this element of her style to her wide experience with travel. Her songs belong to Pop, World, Folk, Opera and Jazz all at once. These different elements may seem eclectic but draws from her various musical developments. A new and recent musical endeavor that Burdett has been

working on is song writing. Being a long time performer of other people’s music, Burdett will perform some of her own songs for the very first time at the festival. Burdett likes a bit of crunchiness to her tunes and said audiences can expect tension from the songs in her performance. Locals shine at JazzFest
From local favourites to established icons, the culturally and musically diverse lineup of the 34th TD Victoria International JazzFest features more than 350 musicians in 80 performances on nine stages from June 23 to July 2. The outdoor stage at Centennial Square showcases many of Victoria’s top local jazz bands, and with 24 “free to the public” performances over nine afternoons, a beverage garden, food trucks, and the JazzFest Weekend Market, this all-ages venue is a great place to discover what JazzFest is all about. Check out the Victoria Jazz
Orchestra on June 30 for a unique performance from an ever-rotating cast of Victoria’s finest jazz musicians. Gifted Victoria vocalist Susannah Adams promises to enchant the Centennial Square crowd on July 2. Local flavour can also be found in the evening ticketed performances when west coast gypsy jazz virtuosos Quinn Bachand’s Brishen kick off their cross-country album launch tour at the Dave Dunnet Theatre on June 24. Two artists whose careers have taken off thanks to being mentored by the late Prince are the funky bass-master Nik West, who rocks Centennial Square the evening of June 24, and the Kandace Springs Trio, a skilled jazz pianist blessed with a gorgeous voice, in a twin bill with the Cyrus Chestnut Trio on June 26 at the McPherson Playhouse. Another top pick for the festival is the Grammy-winning Jacob Collier’s mul-

Jazz purists will want to catch the Tierney Sutton Band playing “The Sting Variations” at the Dave Dunnet Theatre, also on June 28. Ditching four wheels reimagines downtown Kyle Wells This Father’s Day, over nine blocks of Douglas Street, downtown Victoria will become a pedestrian paradise, complete with impromptu parks, live music, a large variety of food and drinks for sale and all sorts of informational popups to peruse. The third annual Car Free YYJ, organized by the Downtown Victoria Business Association (DVBA), hits the streets June 18 to reinvent the downtown core and potentially change the way you think about the area. “It’s a reimagining of Douglas Street. The first year it came out it
took my breath away and I think it kind of shocked people,” said Ian Piears, cultural outreach manager with DVBA. “It’s literally an event for everyone, and that’s what I love, this coming together of the community.” This year will see the success of the 2016 event built on with even more and varied vendors, a larger licensed area for the adults and a fresh slate of musicians taking to three different stages. Non-profits, local crafters, local businesses and others will be filling over 250 vendor booths with goods, information and family-friendly activi-

ties, some including prizes. The 5,000 square foot pop-up park will also be back, providing a grassy area to lounge amidst the surrounding concrete and steel. “So it’s not just a market, it’s more of an experience as you go down the street,” said Piears. “For us that’s a lot more interesting way to engage with people.” Food trucks, local bakeries and other food merchants will be offering a wide variety of local tasty treats for visitors to indulge in. The First Peoples’ Festival will also be back for the event, providing live entertain-
ment, along with Indigenous food and crafts, from the park area in Centennial Square. With only two events behind them, DVBA Executive Director Kerri Milton said they already hear about how much people look forward to it and how much they appreciate its impact on the area. “They love that Douglas Street is actually closed. It’s such a great thoroughfare, it’s exciting to see it turned into a festival,” Milton said. “It changes the whole feel of downtown.” For more information visit downtownvictoria.ca.

CCPA tackles racy production Alumni of the Canadian College of Performing Arts are tackling an extremely unorthodox hit Broadway production, never before seen in Victoria. With extremely racy themes, this Triple Crown (Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Original Book) Tony Award-Winning production takes childhood characters to a place audiences never thought they would go; including full puppet nudity. Part flesh, part felt and packed with heart, AVENUE Q is a laugh-out-loud musical that tells the timeless story of a bright-eyed college grad named Princeton. When he arrives in the city with big dreams and a tiny bank account, he has to move into a shabby apartment all the way out on AVENUE Q.
“Simply put, Avenue Q will be one heck of a great time for Victorian audiences,” says R.J. Peters, the show’s Director. “It’s such a fun showcase for the incredible talents that CCPA has to offer.” Due to adult language and situations, like puppet nudity, Avenue Q is not suitable for all audiences. Performances will be at the CCPA Performance Hall on June 1, 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10 at 8 p.m. and 2 p.m. on June 11. Tickets are available by calling 250-595-9970 or by going to www. ccpacanada.com. The project is a component of the Community Outreach Program of the Canadian Heritage Arts Society. — MONDAY MAGAZINE
String fest returns with zing The popular summer-intensive chamber music festival, Quartet Fest West (QFW) is back. From June 8 to 18, the University of Victoria’s quartet-in-residence, the Lafayette String Quartet (LSQ), will host artists from around the globe in this anticipated festival of concerts, workshops and lessons. This year’s participants will be travelling from across western Canada, Poland, and China. Special guest ensemble, Mexico’s Quarteto Chroma, will be assisting the LSQ throughout the festival and will present a concert on June 13. Founded in 2015, the young string quartet has been winning top prizes in chamber music competitions and performing in festivals across Mexico. QFW also welcomes the Erlendis Guitar Quartet all the way from Poland. Winner of many international competitions, Erlendis has quickly established itself as one of the most
promising guitar quartets in Europe. Don’t miss their concert on June 9 featuring music by Witold Lutosławski, Maurice Ravel, Antoine de Lhoyer and others. Their unique and brilliant sound offers all the intensity of a string quartet but with the intimacy of the guitar. Of course, the festival would not be complete without a performance by the LSQ. To cap off their 30th anniversary season, their dear friend and powerhouse violist, Yariv Aloni joins the LSQ on June 15 in Brahms’ epic Quintet Op. 111. Also on the program is Haydn’s sunny Quartet Op. 77, No. 2 as well as sounds from the Australian outback with Peter Sculthorpe’s Quartet No. 8. The festival culminates in a concert on June 18 featuring chamber groups made up of Quartet Fest participants. The program will feature works by Beethoven, Glazunov, Dvorak and others. —MONDAY MAGAZINE

This exhibition examines Emily Carr’s work through the dual lenses of the artist’s increasing interest in environmental issues and the status of ancient forests of the region in present times.

I love spending time with thousands of my best friends every night during HarbourCats season. During the off-season, I spend my time out and about exploring our great city and spending time in the community. From time to time, I've been known to stop in at local sporting events during the winter months to visit my mascot friends! 3 Favourite mascot and why? I can't answer this question without starting with my best friends, Seamore the Seal and Marty the Marmot. Seamore has become a mentor of mine, sharing his experiences with me from his time with the beloved Victoria Seals. Marty and I have a complicated relationship. We are very different people; he's a winter person and I'm a summer person, but we can always come together for our common love for our great community of Victoria! As far as professional sports goes; I'm a fan of Lou Seal with the San Francisco Giants, and of course, the San Diego Chicken is the gold standard.

VICTORIA SKA & REGGAE FESTIVAL XVIII WELCOMES THE WORLD JUNE 14 – 18, 2017 SHIP POINT INNER HARBOUR & OTHER VENUES THROUGHOUT VICTORIA!
First thing’s first: WHAT IS SKA?
VICTORIA SKA & REGGAE FEST XVIII INCORPORATES SKA & REGGAE
SKA is not an abbreviation or accronymn. Ska is a musical style that was born in the early 1960s in Jamaica. It is a fusion of Jamaican mento (calypso) with heavy influences from American Jazz and Cuban musical styles. It has a similar beat pattern to reggae but has a much faster tempo. SKA IS THE GRANDFATHER OF REGGAE MUSIC. IT CAME BEFORE REGGAE. Bob Marley and the Wailers played a lot of the songs you hear on popular albums such as Legend in a ska style before they were played in a reggae style. The latter became popular on Island Records and Tuff Gong in the late 1960s to 1970s.
VICTORIA’S 18TH ANNUAL SKA & REGGAE FESTIVAL SHIP POINT
OVERVIEW
We are thrilled once again to offer 5 straight days of free and ticketed afternoon and evening programming at Ship Point Inner Harbour our marquee venue. Ship Point Inner Harbour is one of most beautiful venues in Canada to catch world class music, visual arts and international cuisine. All festival presentations at Ship Point are all ages and fully licensed which means you can have a beverage anywhere on site with a 19+ wristband. We are grateful to Red Truck Beer and Rekorderlig Cider for their generous support. Kids 10 and under are free of charge and there will be a kids zone with games, colouring sheets and more! Enjoy visual arts in our Rocksteady Collective Arts Area featuring regional artists Taste the selection of our various vendors including Incedent Risotto (Italian), The Reef (Jamaican), Far East Food Service (Japanese), Unique Grill (Canadian) and Mini Donuts
& THE MUSIC IT HELPED CREATE AND INFLUENCE IT. Victoria’s 18th Annual Ska &
Reggae Festival will reveal an incredibly diverse lineup, one that incorporates a vast array of genres beyond the two genres that make up our name. This diversity reflects the incredible global-wide influence that early Jamaican ska and reggae music has had on the majority of modern music. As American jazz and soul music found its way south into the Jamaican soundsystems, locals began blending it with the sounds of the island’s native calypso music, birthing the seeds that would grow into ska and then the worldwide phenomenon of reggae music. Understanding the roots of ska and its influence on the creation of other genres that came after it such as rocksteady, reggae, dub, dancehall, jungle, hiphop and more, will help everyone better understand the festival and the Victoria BC Ska Society which has produced it for the past 18 years.

For over half a century, life time Grammy Achievement Winner and Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Booker T. Jones has been leaving his mark on American music, through his own work and collaborations with some of world’s most revered names such asThe Roots, Jim James and Gary Clark Jr, to name just a few. His song “Green Onions” has been a popular staple for years and is the only instrumental song included on Rolling Stone Magazine’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” After his unforgettable performance at Alix Goolden in February 2016 we thought it was only fitting to bring this legend back, this time on our signature stage, in front of the majesty of the Inner Harbour sunset.
Tarrus Riley is now one of the world’s greatest reggae acts headlining festivals all over Europe, the Caribbean and North America. Aka “Mr. Singy Singy” Tarrus is known for hits such as She’s Royal, Superman, and his most recent single Don’t Come Back.
Perro Bravo
The Skints
Representing that sunny ska hotbed of Long Beach, California are Skunk Records trio Perro Bravo. Perro Bravo are veterans of the Cali ska/reggae scene. Frontman Miguel Happoldt is an original member of Sublime. He’s responsible for the lead vocals on the band’s cover of “Scarlet Begonias,” and remained a producer for the band until its end – to his founding of the Long Beach Dub All-Stars.
Easy Star Records UK ska/reggae sensations The Skints will be making their Western Canadian debut at Ship Point. Interestingly enough this band also has a local connection as they toured with Current Swell on Current Swell’s European tour a few years ago. UK’s Clash Magazine called them “the torchbearers for modern British reggae,” and the genre couldn’t have better ambassadors. The Skints combine so many facets of the reggae family tree – dub, ska, two-tone, punk, dancehall, hip-hop – the band creates an entirely unique, wildly unpredictable style. With dynamic male/female harmonies and grimy rapid-fire dancehall raps, the Skints paint vivid sonic portraits of hard city life in London over top of sunny dub reggae with way more heavy bottom end than they have any right to use.

Roots Roundup have given unforgetable experiences over the past three decades to thousands of music lovers throughout BC – especially on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. It’s a dream come true to finally have them on Victoria’s Ska & Reggae Fest!
Jamaica’s Jah9 makes her Ska & Reggae Fest debut headlining our International Kickoff Free outdoor show on the first day of the festival. Deeply mystical, Jah9 has emerged from a chrysalis of poetry, dub and spirit to become a powerful femiNINE energy within a universal grassroots movement of consciousness. Inspired by the open spaces in the instrumental dub of 1970’s Jamaican roots music, Jah9 sings with a voice that belies the dimensions of her physical body, from a soul much older than its current vessel; “reminiscent of that darkly operatic wailer for truth & justice, Nina Simone.” Her philosophy–profoundly spiritual, and her style–Jazz on Dub.

VICTORIA SKA & REGGAE FEST XVIII CLUB SERIES With over 40 bands from 8 countries,
our marquee stage at Ship Point just isn’t enough to contain all the musical madness! We are proud to present a world-class roster of artists performing at a variety of Victoria’s finest live venues, almost every night of the 18th Annual Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival. (Please note: All Club Series performances are included in your Full Festival or Jupiter VIP Pass.)
Entangados Friday, June 16 @ Lucky Bar
After closing out last year’s Festival with an unforgettable performance in front of thousands at Ship Point, Argentinian ska brigade Entangados return and this time they take on the crowd at Victoria’s legendary Lucky Bar. The clown-clad musical pranksters combine top-notch musicianship with seemingly boundless energy to create a uniquely fun and welcoming dance party wherever they go. Victoria punk rockers No Liars and Montreal’s otherworldly electronic dub trio The OM Sound will both be joining Entangados for a journey that’s going to touch countless corners of the musical globe.
Mike Love
Saturday, June 17 @ Sugar Nightclub
Skampida
Wednesday, June 14 @ Distrikt Nightclub
This year we welcome back longtime festival friends Skampida! These rowdy troubadours of ska used to come around Victoria so often that many thought they were a local band, but they hail from far south in Colombia. Their frenetic energy has propelled them around the globe, attacking audiences with an all-out assault of fun and after too many years away, they return to get our Ska & Reggae massive moving. With local favourites SweetLeaf and The Party on High Street, this is going to be a celebration of a exciting, familiar faces.
One of modern reggae’s brightest stars, the one and only Mike Love makes his Victoria debut! In these troubled, frantic times, Love’s music is a salve for humanity. His lively, acoustic-based reggae tackles societal ills and general love for all living things. Love’s deep respect for humanity and the planet – buoyed by incredible guitar work and an overwhelmingly emotive voice – has made him a favourite of reggae fans around the globe. With California reggae warriors BURNT and Yellowsky - powerful Plains Cree reggae MC, this is going to be a powerful night of music that can’t be missed.
La Banda Skalavera Saturday, June 17 @ Victoria Event Centre
Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival is proud to present the Canadian debut of Los Angeles’ foremost authority of high-energy ska music, La Banda Skalavera! This all-Latino outfit laces their frenetic brand of ska with punk, meringue, salsa and traditional folk music to create a wholly unique sound to rattle your ears and move your butt. Teaming up with La Banda Skalavera for this skapunk party are longtime Vancouver ska-bearers and longtime Ska & Reggae Fest family Los Furios.
The Boom Booms
Thursday, June 15 @ Distrikt Nightclub
Maybe the smoothest, sultriest night of the Festival, Vancouver’s indie-soul sensations The Boom Booms are making the trip across the Strait for an incredibly soulful night of music. The septet’s brand of soul is overflowing with warmth and grooves that give them a sound unlike anything else Vancouver has produced in a very long time. Joining the Festival veterans for this very special West Coast party are Victoria’s reggae stalwarts Caleb Hart & The Royal Youths and Nanaimo soul-funk outfit Boomshack.
The Black Seeds Friday, June 16 @ Sugar Nightclub
New Zealand reggae icons The Black Seeds are proof that the beating heart of reggae lies with the people, from whichever nation or part of the world they call home. After one of last years highlight performances at Ship Point, The Black Seeds are returning, armed with their new album Better Days, to get Sugar Nightclub rocking – a rare chance to see the dub reggae stars up-close-and-personal! Along with The Black Seeds on this fine night are Vancouver songstress Tonye and Jon Middleton, one half of Victoria’s roots sensations Jon & Roy.
TIVE LECTIVE COLLEC YCOL EADY KSTEAD ROC ROCKST ION IBITION EXHIBIT ARTSSEXH AART EDIA LTIMEDI MU MULTIM The Rocksteady Collective Exhibition returns, bigger and stronger than ever!
This year we welcome our largest roster of visual artists to date, including Francis Dick, noted aboriginal artist and member of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation, who will be providing unique pieces for the public to see throughout the Festival. While visual art is central to the Rocksteady Collective, over the years of existence, it has grown to not just present some of the finest visual art from around our community, but also music, dance and culinary arts. Culinary arts will once again be created and presented by local chef Eric Holden, based on international inspiration from the Festival’s musical lineup. Come down to the Exhibition on Fri. June 16 from 5-7pm to sample the culinary delights during the Rocksteady launch party before everything gets underway with two nights of music, dancing and artistic love.

Love conquers all Rick leans into the engine of his 1980 bright red pick-up truck, inhales deeply and laughs. “That grease and oil — one of those things that gets into your whole psyche!” He’s wearing the same patch-covered leather vest he wore as a biker. He used to ride motorcycles all year round – all over North America – through the worst of winter and summer. “One time in Saskatchewan we were getting hit with grasshoppers so big they could pick you up and carry you away.” It was a passion he shared with his wife Jan. “Not only was it life, it was really total peace.” He speaks in the past tense because it ‘was’ all that until the day those deer ran in front of them on a Montana highway. Until the crash. “I looked around (for my wife) and I went and grabbed her and she was dead in my arms.” The next thing Rick remembers is waking up days later in the hospital confused by who he saw in the mirror. “I wondered who the guy was! Who is this white haired guy?” He says the accident caused his dark grey hair and beard to turn suddenly snow white. The once tough looking biker was now Santa Claus. When Jan woke up from her month-
ADAM SAWATSKY @CTVNewsAdam long coma she still recognized Rick. “He was still my man!” she laughs. And Jan was still his wife, but after being brought back to life by a nurse who just happened to be two vehicles behind their motorcycle accident — she was very different. Jan suffered a severe brain injury. “(Rick) taught me how to dress and eat” she reveals. “How to do all of life again”. It was not easy for either of them. But whenever it all seemed too overwhelming — they’d inevitably see a child point in their direction, and whisper “Hey! There’s Santa.” Not wanting to disappoint, Rick would become Santa. It inspired him to start sewing a Santa suit and volunteering. “Life is too short to be miserable and unhappy”. Although their injuries have made motorcycling impossible, Rick and Jan have discovered a new joy ride, the red truck with a message on the back ‘I left my other vehicle at the North Pole’. The videographer takes pictures of the couple driving around dressed

Hedwig and The Angry Inch June 7 -18 Metro Theatre
Atomic Vaudeville bring Hedwig to Metro Everyone's favourite German Transgender rock star will take over the Metro Studio Theatre, June 7 - 18 as Atomic Vaudeville presents Hedwig and The Angry Inch. Hedwig Robinson is not content to let her rock star ex-boyfriend Tommy Gnosis have all the success. She shares the stories of her life - ranging from escaping communist Eastern Germany, to her boxed sex-change that gave birth to the Angry Inch, to just who really wrote all those Tommy Gnosis songs that have been so popular. At times touching, this is a Bowie-esque glam-rock extrav-
aganza of a musical comedy that audiences are sure to remember. "I think we bring a different kind of attitude to the productions we do" said Paul Shortt, marketing and development coordinator. "We have a reputation in town from the cabaret shows we do at the Victoria Events Centre. (Hedwig is) the same type energy so it transfers well." Artistic Producer Britt Small, actors Griffin Leonard Lea as Hedwig, and Jana Morrison as Yitzhak will bring the two person show to life. "It’s a fun old rock show," Small said." mondaymag.com MONDAY MAGAZINE JUNE 2017

Celebrating Diverse Voices
ARTSMARTS ART JANIS LA COUVÉE
With each new generation, comes a new vision and a new focus. In recent years theatre has seen a new emphasis on diverse voices—often at festivals like OUTstages (Victoria’s queer theatre festival, presented by Intrepid Theatre June 20th-24th), the Victoria Fringe Festival, Uno Fest and the Belfry Theatre SPARK Festival. Outside the festival season, however, there are a number of theatre companies and artists working hard to ensure that “under-represented” voices are front and centre. Here’s a small sampling. Vino Buono Productions, who identifies as a queer company, was formed in 2016 with a mandate to produce exclusively contemporary works, focusing on emerging and under-represented creators. For artistic director Kat Taddei under-represented is an umbrella term with no strict definition; the company welcomes submissions by people who identify as under-represented—this could be queer, non-binary, gender-fluid, feminist, persons of colour, indigenous. The final show of their inaugural season is Project Mercury by Keiko Hart, June 7-10, with an all-female cast playing animal, male and female characters and switching from night to night—cast members will learn two roles. Vinobuonoproductions.com Monica Ogden does not claim to speak for all marginalized voices, but brings her perspective as a Filipina cis woman with disabilities to her new work LUB DUB with Tony Adams. Together they seek to disrupt the normalization of whiteness in theatre and examine their implication in each other’s lives. They noticed this work was not being done, so decided to do it themselves. LUB DUB heads to the Ottawa Fringe this summer. Ogden points out that audiences
who want to see marginalized populations represented in local theatre have a responsibility. Her personal rule is “not to attend theatre put on by only white folks”. Facebook.com/NickelPumpernickel Intersections can get “messy” as John Aitken, creator of The Gift, points out. Aitken identifies as First Nations, with a mixed ancestry of Coast Salish, Haida and Scottish, and Two-Spirit. The Gift, which is being presented as part of the Victoria Fringe Festival, is a physical theatre piece incorporating singing and drumming, that explores how Aitken came to find his voice at the age of 17. Past presentations of The Gift have included a talking circle—allowing conversation between audience members and performers, as a means to further the conversation between indigenous and non-indigenous communities. He’s currently devising a solo show, Mixed-Up, that focuses on his mixed ancestry. Truthandhealing.com It was only recently that Eddi Wilson (aka Eddi Licious) began to see themself as expressing an under-represented voice. As a performer in drag cabarets and cultural community centres, they say that what feels mainstream to them might still be considered quite eccentric in the bigger picture. For Wilson, performing is a way to have a bit of fun, particularly with their Métis heritage and Two Spirit identity. Their message is simple: sharing and celebrating our differences strengthens our ability to transcend them. Victoria has a thriving alternative arts scene and Wilson encourages people to consider seeking entertainment outside the bigger theatre venues—at places like the Victoria Events Centre, Paparazzi Nightclub and “practically everywhere during Pride Week in the summer.”

f you’re looking for a new Island to explore, look no further than Gabriola. The 57-square kilometre Gulf Island paradise is just a short 20-minute ferry trip from Nanaimo and makes a great weekend getaway. We decided to maximize our time on Gabriola, which is known as the Isle of the Arts, by catching one of the first ferries Saturday morning. There are more than 60 studios on the small Island, which is home to the sixth highest concentration of working artists in Canada. “Gabriola Island is hopping with arts events year-round,” explains Alina Cerminara of the Gabriola Arts Council, which organizes many events including the Gabriola Theatre Festival in August and the Isle of the Arts Festival in April. “The studios are open year-round by appointment to visit and you’re welcomed into all the cool studios and workshops by the Gabriola artists themselves.” Travelling with young boys, I opt for outdoor pursuits and Gabriola doesn’t disappoint. It’s a nature-lovers’ paradise with beautiful beaches, towering trees and endless hiking trails. The most breathtaking and unusual spot to visit is the Malaspina Galleries, a spectacular sandstone cavern carved by the crashing waves and frost. As we scramble over the rocks at low tide and walk through the cavern, we’re in awe at the power and beauty of Mother Nature. I lost count of how many photos I took but they couldn’t fully capture the natural beauty. It’s
such a special spot, we came back on Sunday to see it again. We easily drove around the entire Island on our first day, stopping at three provincial parks, Tess van Straaten five beaches, a cedar forest, the petroglyphs behind the United Church and Silva Bay marina along the way. Two of our favourite spots were the Eldar Cedar Nature Reserve, where we explored an ancient cedar forest, and Drumbeg Provincial Park at the south-eastern end of the Island. A favourite spot for swimming and picnics, the sandstone rocks that line the shoreline at Drumbeg are most stunning at low tide. There are also easy hiking trails along the beach and through the forest. “Gabriola’s a great place to visit because it satisfies all kinds of getaway goals,” Cerminara says. “You can also kayak, sail, play golf and tennis, camp by the ocean at Descanso Bay and then finish the day off with a lovely dinner or refreshing drink overlooking the ocean sunset at Silva Bay Resort or the Surf Lodge.” That’s exactly what we did after exploring the magic of this Gulf Island’s gem.

It’s true there ARE hot documentaries at Hot Docs. A ten-day Festival in Toronto that exclusively screens docs has had a big impact on the industry and viewers tastes. Even our own Victoria Public Library features Hot Doc selections on its DVD shelves. This past May, seeing 20 films over 4 ½ days might seem like a lot but after attending the Toronto Film Festival for years and viewing 6 – 7 films per day it makes Hot Docs seem easy peasy. The Festival had a terrific line up and topics ranged from mermaids to

violin-makers to sex education in India. I always enjoy spotting new filmmakers who are worth keeping an eye on and Ali Weinstein is at the top of my list this year. Her first feature film on the growing subculture of mermaids is playful but offers something more when it takes a closer look at the women and men who take to mermaiding. Hopefully it will be coming to a theatre or Netflix soon.

Robert Moyes Ever since French filmmaker Georges Méliès used camera trickery to whimsically portray a rocket ship spearing the eye of the man in the moon in 1902, space travel has held intense fascination for many in the movie business. Two well-made but very different space trips are currently launching out of a multiplex near you, so make a choice and buckle up! In the most desolate reaches of the cosmos, sci-horror veteran Ridley Scott illustrates how lethal reptilian beasties aren’t all that’s to be afraid of in Alien: Covenant; the mood is much lighter and more colourful when TV-to-bigscreen director James Gunn reprises the comedic action in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Although worlds apart in tone, both films are smoothly directed and very aware of the franchise audiences they were made for. Covenant is a follow-up to 2012’s Prometheus, and features a colony ship with 2,000 passengers transiting the galaxy in search of a fresh planetary start. A search vessel investigates what initially seems a veritable paradise. Soon, of course, it turns out to be a particularly deadly corner of the universe. The crew is mostly played by unknowns, which puts a lot of emphasis on the performances by the superb Michael Fassbender. I use the plural because his is a double role: as well as reprising David, the android from Prometheus, he also plays Walter, a newer android model assigned to the good ship Covenant. Their interactions allow the story to delve deeply into the origins and meaning of life, and results in some highly disturbing ideas and images. Sure, much of this is familiar terrain to Alien aficionados, but it is a deliciously dark and dangerous ride for those who like their action
on the disturbing side. And then there are the improbable hijinks of Guardians, which once again features that wildly mismatched crew of thieves and rogues who zoom from galaxy to galaxy trying to be bad but mostly ending up being on the right side of things. Even though Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone are effective as guest stars, it’s the likes of Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, and Rocket that the audience has come for. As with the original, there is lots of droll trash talking that is laugh-outloud funny, extravagantly colourful sets, and a spoofy knowingness about space-opera clichés. The plot doesn’t really matter, and underneath the characters’ crassness and gruff interactions there is a surprising spirit of tenderness. The “we are family” theme is played in the key of mawkish, but the characters are weird enough to get away with it. Vol. 2 isn’t an advance on the surprisingly successful debut film from 2014, but there’s likely enough here to sustain at least one more Guardians (mis)adventure. So, do you want horror or hilarity? Gruesome gore or giggly guffaws? Somber soundscape or a toe-tapping “awesome MixTape”? Maybe call it a fine double bill. Rating: *** Stars Michael Fassbender, Billy Crudup / Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana Directed by Ridley Scott / James Gunn COMING SOON: Wonder Woman A huge audience will likely be lassoed by the big-screen debut of the Amazonian princess warrior known as Wonder Woman. The cast includes Robin Wright, Chris Pine, and Connie Nielsen. So, can DC Comics challenge the Marvel brand?

Becoming Visible “Dance is about becoming visible” offers Lindsay Delaronde, Victoria’s first Indigenous Artist in Residence. Her first exposure to dance was as a 5-year-old when her grandmother Norma took her to the longhouse to experience traditional Iroquois dance in Kahnawake Mohawk Territory. Lindsay was asked to sit and watch, to experience. Much observation led to participation in a cultural performance group where she came to understand that cultural dance provided “a sense of belonging, a continuation of our story” and the importance of dance in underlining relationships, specifically “the relationship to all living things, the creation story, our origin.” A visitor on the west coast, Lindsay’s interest in dance was reignited when she dropped into Raino Dance and subsequently successfully applied for a scholarship to study. The past year has been an exploration of Hiphop, Funk and, most recently, Contemporary. Lindsay shares how formal dance training is “the opportunity to confront myself in the mirror and engage in self-acceptance”, as well as experience “the power of the body and its ability to deliver messages”. This renewed interest, explains Lindsay, is directly in line with “an artistic trajectory that moved from 2D to 3D then into the body” whereby “I am becoming the artwork.” Amoung many other engaged body collaborations, Lindsay and 13 other indigenous and non-indigenous women are

working collectively to engage in a social art practice to make women’s voices heard, through reclaiming space & the body. The co-created piece, called A CHoRd, endeavours to enact a new accord reflecting the potential for a rallying point between cultures, politics, ages, and her stories. Storytelling, movement, breathe and each body’s own unique vocabulary contribute to inspire a movement piece to be shared on the legislature steps June 25th. It is the collective’s hope that the presentation, the fruits of the process these women have bravely committed to, suspends “the intellectual, analytical need to understand, to know” and instead invites the audience to feel and experience the flesh and bone of their brief but intense exploration of the idea of reconciliation both personally and collectively across a small yet diverse circle of women.

VORACIOUS good eats!?
New Asian Village serves up authentic cuisine
I reserved a table at the New Asian Village at Yates and Wharf using the reservation link on the webpage. The link is powered by OpenTable, and it erred. We arrived at our scheduled time to find that we had no reservation. However, as the restaurant was near empty, we were graciously escorted across plush Indian carpets and past a long row of shining round-top chaffing dishes set before colourful Indian wood carvings to a black and white curtained booth near the back. We sat at a copper-topped table, drinking water from hammered stainless steel cups, which we refilled from a copper pitcher. Live sitar music soothed away any lingering bad energy. Our waitress, clad in Indian dress, was born and raised in Rajasthan, India. She was delighted to find that one in
our group had travelled to her home province and was very familiar with the food and the culture. She was also very happy to share from her own experiences of growing up in India and then migrating to Canada. And she was clearly very proud of the food produced by the New Asian Village, claiming it was as authentic and almost as good as her mother’s. I and my two dining partners elected to eat off the menu rather than from the buffet. Our friend with Indian experience, with the sage advise of our waitress, selected our courses. We started with Onion Naan and Chicken Pakoras as appetizers. I’ve had Naan before, but not like this. This was charred and had a soft and almost creamy texture. It is traditionally used for picking up other foods, but it is delicious all by itself. Our wait-
ress claimed that the Naan is unusually good because the restaurant has one of the only traditional Naan ovens in the city. It is a clay cylinder with a wood fire at its base. The naan is cooked while it sticks to the interior sides of the cylinder. The Pakoras were like tandoori dusted chicken nuggets served with a pair of dipping sauces: one herbal, and one sweet. We then shared the almost mandatory Butter Chicken, an order of Mattar Paneer (peas and cheese), Lamb Roganjosh (like a lamb stew, served with Garlic Naan) and Seafood Biryani, which is local prawns in basmati rice seasoned with mace, mint, and other herbs. One of our group had never before found the courage to enter an Indian restaurant, and he was particularly concerned to avoid curry and spice. No problem. We ordered our food at
one on the spice scale, and to temper even that low heat, we ordered a mango chutney with mint and tamarind and a dish of Raita (Similar to Tzatziki: cucumber and carrots in yogurt) Personally, I could have handled much more heat, but the flavours were complex and crystal clear. Each dish was a new flavour sensation and the different flavours within each dish were discernible one from the other. Nothing muddy and monotonous here. We finished our meal with Gulaab Jaamun, a sweet ball of cake served in a honey syrup. It was sickly sweet and decadent. Though each of the dishes were small, they were all quite rich. We stuffed ourselves and still took away enough for one leftover lunch.

A Feast for the senses Kyle Wells Film is a feast for the senses, and the Victoria Film Festival will be expanding its repertoire by adding taste to the mix. The fourth annual Feast Food and Film, taking place at the Vic Theatre from June 15-17, features food-focused films paired with tasty treats and bevvies, along with supplementary talks and demonstrations. “It’s one thing to watch a movie, but I think to actually have some atmospheric elements to add into it increases the pleasure of going to the movies,” Kay said. “You get a little extra and it makes it a special night out.” The series kicks off with Ella Brennan: Commanding the Table, a documentary focused on the titular 91-yearold New Orleans chef who revolutionized creole cuisine through the groundbreaking restaurant Commander’s Palace. To supplement the film, Floyd’s Diner will be serving up New Orleans-style breakfast hors d’oeuvres, along with mimosas. Kay said she’s particularly looking forward to a screening of SEED: The Untold Story, an American documentary about seed diversity and the effects on centuries-old grain by modern agricultural practices. Paired with SEED will be a talk from Robin Roberts and Natalie Chambers, co-authors of Saving Farmland, and also local seedy salad, grainy bread and hemp vodka cocktails. “It’s going to be lots of fun because of the speakers, and they’re talking about Vancouver Island in particular,” Kay said. “And a film like that, I know it’s a popular topic right now, seeds and
modification.” Californian wine and hors d’oeuvres, along with a demonstration from Toque Catering chef and owner Nicholas Waters, will be paired with the documentary Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent, which looks at one of the key players in creating the new American cuisine and also the phenomenon of the celebrity chef. Setbacks and redemption are at the heart of Deconstructing Dani Garcia, a documentary capturing the journey of a chef with two Michelin Stars who is forced to reinvent himself after his restaurant closes. This screening will feature a sherry tasting, along with some classic Spanish tapas, and for entertainment, a flamenco performance from guitarist Gareth Owen and dancer Denise Yeo, from Alma de Espana Flamenco Dance Company. Chinese dance, food and booze will be served up for the screening of Cook up a Storm, a comedy about a culinary competition where rival chefs come together to take on a common foe. This event will feature the only Canadiandistilled baijiu, a Chinese spirit, made in Canada by Dragon Mist Distillery. To finish off Feast, Phillips Brewery will be opening up its backyard for an outdoor screening of the 1980s mockumentary classic This is Spinal Tap. Coast Lunchbox will be on hand with themed food, the Phillips beer will be flowing and ticketholders will enjoy a special green goo surprise. For more information and tickets, visit feastfoodfilm.ca.

June is a Hopping Good Time MATHIEU POIRIER @matterofbeer
PERFECTLY POTABLE WINE NOTES BY ROBERT MOYES
As the weather warms up, not only do the patios open up, but beer festivals start happening almost every other weekend. Summer beer festival gets kicked off this year with HOPoxia 2017, being held in the Phillips Backyard. The June 10 open-air event will showcase the hop-infused beers from over 45 breweries. Tickets are $20, include the first two tasters, and to enjoy more beers, additional tasters are $2 each. This is a hop-forward event, and this year, some of the already confirmed breweries include nearly all the Victoria breweries, and will also include a few newcomers like Beach Fire Brewing from Campbell River, Faculty Brewing from the mainland, Mount Arrowsmith in Parksville, Sooke Oceanside, Riot from Chemainus, and more. The venue is amazingly well suited for the event, as they convert the industrial space that is their loading dock and Pembroke St into a spacious courtyard that still has a very intimate feel. The same space is used for events like the Phillips Backyard Weekender, Brewery and the Beast, and more, so you can expect them to pack in as much as they can to make a great day of it. When you get hungry, look no further than the big blue food truck, where Coast Lunchbox will be serving some special recipes designed
for the event making use of some hoppy beers for a complementary pairing. Tickets for HOPoxia 2017 are available at Phillips Brewery, or at Ticket Rocket. If that event doesn’t fill your desire for hops, a few days later there is another event sure to satisfy your need. June 14, at 6:30 PM, Vessel Liquor has Thirsty Writer Joe Wiebe leading his monthly educational trip through beer, and this month he has eight hoppy beers lined up to taste for those who attend. Tickets are $20, and are available at Vessel Liquor, or through a link on their website, but don’t wait too long, as the class only accommodates 14 people.
Beringer Vineyards was founded 150 years ago in California’s Napa Valley – which means Beringer’s and Canada’s sesquicentennial are neatly paired for celebration. Why not toast both with their entry level Cabernet Sauvignon, the “Founders Estate”? It’s full-bodied, well balanced, and impressively smooth, with aromas of blackberry and black cherry paired with succulent flavours of cassis, plum and spicy dark fruits. Finishing long, with a hint of sweetness, this beauty goes down a treat – it’s solid value at $18.40. And as spring still struggles to assert itself, goose it along with South Africa’s tasty Rustenberg Sauvignon Blanc. As either a patio sipper or a dinner companion for shellfish or sea

As much as we all love to attend festivals, it’s important to give back. Most festivals are volunteer-led and need support from the public to run. You don’t usually lose out by volunteering though, as most events will give you free or discounted access and will try to schedule your shift so you can still take part in the event, and additional perks are fairly common as well. The other added bonus is the appreciation you gain for everything that needs to happen to make those festivals work, so do your part and signSho Oc w D up for an event this summer. t ate TH

bass, the award-winning Rustenberg offers a slightly fuller and more complex style of Sauvignon Blanc, due to the aging on lees and the addition of 5% Semillon. Its refreshing acidity combines with classic notes of tropical fruits, melon, peach, and lemon ($15.60). Yum! A slightly racier Sauvignon Blanc is produced by New Zealand’s Seven Terraces, hailing from the celebrated Marlborough region. New Zealand does great things with this grape, and Seven Terrace’s Alan McCorkindale has twice been named his country’s Winemaker of the Year. The 2016 vintage has an enticing nose and brilliant, refreshing flavours of tropical fruit salad suffused with a sparkle of citrus. Worth the $20 price tag, but note that a handy two-litre box at double that price has just come to market – it’s like getting three bottles for the price of two. An even better “big box” saving comes from noted Argentinean winemaker Jean Bousquet, whose organic Malbecs are rightly prized. His soft and fruity Domaine Bousquet “Camelon” is an easy-drinking, barbecue-friendly quaffer that has been oak-aged and offers flavours of plum, cherry and red berry fruits. The three-litre box is great value at $41.50. (All prices include tax.)

You can expect the same quality shopping experience this season as in years past. Come stroll amidst outdoor stalls of fresh produce and locally created gift items. Meet our diverse group of vendors that range from local farmers and food producers to crafters, makers, bakers and talented food artisans. Explore aisles filled with gourmet preserves, delicious sweet treats, pottery, wood carved pieces, bath and body care, jewelry, toys, clothing, home décor and so much more. You can learn how the farmers grow their product, why it is so fresh and why it matters. When you buy from growers you are guaranteed that there are no GMO’s, artificial coloring or preservatives. Buying seedlings from the mar-
ket to plant in your home garden is a great idea. The seedlings are from plants that are grown in our local environment and work well with our unique weather conditions. Coming to the James Bay Market makes shopping a pleasure rather than a chore. The market is a community hub—a place to meet up with your friends, bring your children, and listen to great local musicians while enjoying the day. From spring until fall, the James Bay Market has it all. Join us on Sundays, June 25 through August 13, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., for our Breakwater Market. We are back at our awesome seaside location, next to the Ogden Point Breakwater (behind the Breakwater Cafe & Bistro at 199 Dallas Road). With plenty of free parking you will enjoy a great day full of Artisan Food, Food Trucks, One of a Kind Crafts and Live Local Music. It’s the perfect place to hang out on a summer day.

Georgia Nicols ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) This month your daily pace will accelerate. Just accept this and go with the flow. Your schedule will be busy with appointments, errands and demands from siblings, relatives and neighbours. Many will be more involved in writing, studying, reading or making sales presentations. Because of your ruler Mars, you will be super forthright and to the point. You will say what you mean and mean what you say! TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) You are the financial wizard of the zodiac; and this month, your focus will be on money, cash flow and earnings. Whatever you do with respect to finances or negotiating deals – you will be more aggressive than usual. And brave! In part, this is because this year, your employment situation is so blessed. And the blessing you have
regarding your employment is something that occurs only once every 12 years. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Once a year, the Sun is in your sign for four weeks and that time has arrived! This is your chance to recharge your batteries. Not only can you replenish and restore yourself during this window of time, you have the upper hand. Without any extra effort, you will attract important people and favourable situations to you. You can take advantage of these because you will be pumped with energy! Get more physical exercise to blow off some of this pent-up steam. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Once a year, the Sun is “hiding” in your chart, which is why your energy will be more subdued this month. Expect to work behind the scenes or alone more than usual. Take time to plan and strategize. This is happening because it feels like the natural thing for you to do. And it is. Because next month, the Sun will enter your sign and you will suddenly step out centre stage in all your glory! Therefore, before this happens, this is your chance to plan your new year ahead.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) This month, the Sun will be in a sign that is 180° opposite your sign. This happens only once a year; and because the Sun represents your energy, it means you will need more rest and more sleep during this time. Respect your need for more rest. This polarized position of the Sun also makes you focus more on your closest partnerships. You want to be effective, efficient and productive in all your activities. Basically, you want to make your efforts count – you want the most bang for your buck. However, in June, this focus will much stronger because you will be forced to deal with increased chaos and activity at home. This could be due to residential moves, visiting guests or renovations and do-it-yourself projects.
