Stay outdoors a little longer, with a camping trip to either Hicks Lake or Deer lake, both of which have their own picturesque views and trails systems.

A DAY WITH THE FAMILY
Nothing beats the laughter of children, and you’ll hear plenty of that around these parts. A DAY IN HISTORY The oldest wooden railroad station still in existence in B.C. now houses the Agassiz-Harrison Museum and Visitor Information Centre where you can see period clothing, artifacts and photos of pioneer life. Admission is free and the museum is open from May to October. The park itself is a beautiful place to take a stroll or stop for a picnic. Visit the Museum at 7011 Pioneer Avenue., Agassiz, browse agassizharrisonmuseum.org, or phone 604-796-3545.
A DAY TO CELEBRATE We may have a small town vibe the rest of the year, but the Christmas season doesn’t go unnoticed around here. From the Festival of the Trees, to the Community Carol Concert and the Community Christmas Dinner, both towns celebrate tons of holiday cheer. Agassiz is fortunate to be a stop for the CPR Holiday Train, which winds its way through six provinces and seven states near Christmas time, collecting for food banks along its journey. Get out and support the food bank, hear some great live music and have a chance to see Santa Claus, too. All the food and money collected here goes directly to the Agassiz Community Services food bank. So this year, bundle up, get down to the tracks and celebrate.

HISTORY DISCOVER SOMETHING OLD, ENJOY SOMETHING NEW
DISCOVERING LOCAL FOLKLORE AT KILBY
The Agassiz-Harrison Museum and Visitor Information Centre’s connection to Agassiz’s past is rooted in the building’s foundation. In 1893, the centre acted as an original Canadian Pacific Rail Station. However, in the 1970s, CP started to tear down its old stations. In order to save the historic site, the Agassiz-Harrison Historical Society bought the building for $1, and the District of Kent moved the building off CP land and out to the research station.
Imagine a place where you can tiptoe back in time, learn some history, throw on a pair of gumboots and get dirty. Well, you can experience all of this, at the timeless Kilby Historic Site.
When the District took ownership of the land that is now Pioneer Park in 2003, they brought the museum to its old location for all to enjoy. The museum’s society currently owns and manages the centre, offering tourist information, CP Railway history, period clothing, photographs of pioneer life, and a gift shop featuring local artisans. Celebrating a 31st birthday this year, the site has been running strong for just over three decades, and is open to the public from the end of May until October. To learn more about the area’s unique history, or what’s happening today, visit the Museum and Visitor Info Centre at 7011 Pioneer Ave., Agassiz, call 604-796-3545, or browse agassizharrisonmuseum.org
At this unique location, guests have the choice to be as quiet as church mice, or to tromp around the yard with the friendly animals that call Kilby home. The oldest building in the District of Kent resides here, as well as the infamously haunted Manchester House Hotel. Kilby’s friendly staff and volunteers are on hand for tours or to assist visitors. Get prepared to be intrigued by plenty of local folklore and mystery. The site has several special dates planned each year, inviting the public to share in holiday memories, or the change of seasons. Camping is offered at Kilby Park, or the opportunity to enjoy a picnic lunch for the day in a picturesque setting. For more information on pricing, hours and directions, visit kilby.ca, call 604-796-9576 or drop by 215 Kilby Road, Harrison Mills, B.C.

Sport fishers are looking for the Chinook, Coho, Chum, Sockeye and Pink Salmon that migrate through our region year after year. The legendary sturgeon, the largest fresh water fish on the continent, is the main prize out here. Anyone who has reeled in one of these massive fish knows the true power they possess, and what a thrill it is to bring one on board the boat. Sturgeon fishing is catch and release only, and the fish are monitored by local guides with the help of the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society. The possibility of catching a migrating salmon on the Fraser River is high, as it’s the main channel on their journey to spawning grounds. Meanwhile, the Harrison Lake has easy boat access for both novice and experienced fishers. Regardless if you’re a belly boater with a fly rod or looking to catch a monster, the Fraser River and Harrison Lake are waiting for you to uncover, what lies beneath.
FISHING This area is known as a sport fishing haven, with tourists coming from all over the world, to test our waters.

REDISCOVER THE LOCAL
ARTS SCENE
Legacy Built: The Local Arts Scene For the past nine months, I have been fortunate enough to live at the Ranger Station Art Gallery as the Writer in Residence. Each year, the Kent Harrison Arts Council hosts a different professional artist. Come September, they parachute in with their studio projects, teach workshops, and quickly become a part of a lively arts scene that is welcoming and supportive. At the heart of this vibrant community are long-standing organizations that create a culture where the arts are celebrated and promoted. In May, the Monday Painters hosted their 56th Annual Art Show. In June, the Kent Harrison Arts Council celebrates its 45th anniversary and the Harrison Festival is launching its 39th Harrison Festival of the Arts this July. These are just a few of the cultural institutions that make Agassiz-Harrison such a desirable place to live. It isn’t necessary to drive to the big city to get your arts fix. The Festival’s monthly concert series and the new Cheam Vista Classical Concert Series bring top-notch music to Agassiz and Harrison. The Ranger Station Art Gallery features a new show by a local or BC artist every month. Canwest Art Gallery has a beautiful selection of pieces including some stunning large-scale watercolors by Errol Brimacombe. We even have art in the forest thanks to the clandestine efforts of local sculptor Ernie Eaves, who hung masks for years on The Spirit Trail before being found out. Legacy plays a big part in the local arts scene. Not only does the District of Kent and the Village of Harrison Hot Springs financially support our arts organizations, they also provide dedicated art spaces that act as focal points for the community. Memorial Hall is beloved by all, plus has great acoustics. And the Ranger Station Art Gallery houses both the Kent Harrison Arts Council and the Harrison Festival Society. It acts as a hub for visitors and locals wanting to connect with other art-lovers at monthly openings and workshops.

Locals also show their support for the arts through various ways: by volunteering thousands of hours at shows and openings, buying memberships that help sustain these organizations, attending events, and through mentorship. Teachers from local schools, such as Sts’ailes Community School and Agassiz Elementary Secondary School, encourage students to enter their artwork in the annual Young at Art show that showcases local youth. Being writer in residence, I have had the opportunity to interact with many local artists and art-lovers and to share stories. This cross-genre creative exchange has nourished my own practice and allowed me to celebrate the success of others. This fall, I encouraged a new painter to enter her pieces into our small works show. She was nervous; she had never shown her art before. What a pleasure it was tell her that both paintings had sold! Another standout moment was working with local painters Greg Laxton Ekberg and Irena Erstenuk as they mounted their first solo shows. It was a big moment for both of them, and it was exhilarating to share their excitement. Whether you are interested in music, art, or writing, there is an abundance of opportunities in Agassiz-Harrison to express your creativity. The Agassiz Library has a bi-weekly Writer’s Circle on Saturday afternoons. The Monday Painters meet weekly, as does the Ukulele group. Workshops are offered year-round by visiting artists, as well as the artist in residence. Recent workshops have included using a sketchbook as a daily practice, DIY wire weaving, and poetry as play. The Harrison Festival also hosts workshops every year during the festival. Having lived in other small communities in B.C., I know firsthand how lucky we are to have a thriving local arts scene. It all starts with prioritizing the arts as an essential part of a healthy livable community. It has been an honor to live here this past year and to be a small part of an artistic legacy.
