The Symphony of the Kootenays performs in Kimberley, Saturday, June 10.

Symphony of the Kootenays performs in Kimberley Join the Symphony for a Return to a Night at the Movies By CAROLYN GRANT

The Symphony of the Kootenays is returning to Kimberley this weekend, and although the orchestra won’t be climbing Northstar Mountain this time, they still have an exciting program to present at McKim Theatre. The Symphony will perform at McKim this Saturday, June 10 beginning at 7:30 p.m. The theme of the concert is Return to a Night at the Movies and will feature music from the movies.

The show starts off with the culmination of a season-long journey through Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with Summer featuring SOTK Associate Concertmaster Jeremy VanDieman as soloist. The first half of the show features an Oscar-worthy lineup of classic pieces that have been featured in films from 2001: A Space Odyssey to Apocalypse Now to that great wealth of classical music: Bugs

Bunny cartoons. Works in the second half feature familiar themes from major movies including Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible and a quick journey through the James Bond franchise. There are several Kimberley residents performing with the symphony. Sven Hyde and Tim Plait are both playing, and they will be joined by Gwen Davies and Emma MacLeod. Continued on A16

East Kootenay snow pack at 105% of normal By CAROLYN GRANT

The latest snow survey data was released by the River Forecast Centre on June 7. Hot temperatures in the second half of May led to rapid snowmelt and many of the measured basins lost a great deal of snow in that time. The East Kootenay snow basin is at 105 per cent of normal

as of June 1. That’s down to almost normal from 154 per cent of normal in midMay. There are still areas where the snow basin indices remain very high. Boundary is at 178 per cent of normal snow levels, and the Okanagan at 228 The East Kootenay snow pack is at 105 per cent of norper cent. Continued on A2 mal. Above, the Purcells near Kimberley. TAKIN’ IT TO THE STREETS Question: How long do you think the minority government will last?

Brian from Kimberley

Cara from Kimberley

with Corey Bullock Ray from Alberta

Speaking as an Albertan, the question is, is there any desire to work with one I think they will be out before the end If they succeed, I would like to see them another? The balance of power with the of the year. Because of the coalition [Greens and NDP] in there for four Greens; they’re too divisive. The Greens happening within a two week period - it years. are going to have to come way back on seems like it’s [already] moving. their policies. Unless the Liberals and NDP can work together; as long as the Greens hold power, it’s not going to last.

Still plenty of snow to melt in June

Continued from A1 These two areas actually increased during the last half of may. According to the report, “On-going wet weather, high snow packs, extreme hot temperatures and rapid snow melt have all contributed to very high freshet flows this season, particularly in southern BC. Many areas are still experiencing above normal flows for early-June. Inflows into lake systems has been both early, and higher than normal volume, leading to lake levels, particularly in southern BC, seeing extremely high levels for early-June. For example, inflows into Okanagan Lake in May were 240% of normal, and similarly over the March to end

of May period inflow were 226% of normal. Preliminary analysis suggests that these inflows are 10% higher than the previously recorded maximum inflows over these periods observed in the past 96 years. On smaller rivers and tributaries flowing from mid-elevation areas (primarily below 1600m), flows have been slowly declining over the past week back to normal levels for early-June. In northern BC, the influence of lower seasonal snow packs is becoming evident, as many smaller river systems have transitioned to below-normal flows. In the larger rivers of the province, and in areas with high elevation snow packs,

rivers are at bankfull condition and at or near their peak from snow melt driven runoff. This includes the South Thompson River, North Thompson River, Thompson River, and Fraser River where current flows are between the 2-year and 10-year return period level. In smaller rivers and tributaries draining mid-elevation watersheds, flood risk from snow melt has peaked, and rivers have returned to more seasonal flows. This includes areas through the Central Interior and South Interior, including the Nicola River, Coldwater River, Salmon River, tributary rivers in the Okanagan, Mission Creek, and Kettle River. High June

1st snow basin indices in the Okanagan and Kettle better reflect the high flows and flood conditions that have already occurred rather than being an indication of future risk. Inflows into Okanagan Lake appear to be declining and the risks for future rises in inflow rates and lake levels will be mainly driven

by rainfall. Larger rivers and rivers draining higher elevation terrain are at or near their peak from snowmelt-driven runoff. As a result, rivers are still very sensitive to additional runoff, particularly from rainfall. This includes Shuswap Lake and tributaries, South Thompson River, North Thomp-

son River, Thompson River, Fraser River, and tributaries in the Kootenay and Columbia. Current rain forecast over the next week may lead to higher flows in these rivers than has been experienced so far this year. June is typically the wettest month of the year for most of the BC Interior, with risks of

extreme rainfall. Flood risks across the province from rain-driven runoff are expected to be on-going through June. Current advisories, warnings, freshet information, hydrometric monitoring, river modelling and snow data are available on the River Forecast Centre website.

Kimberley Arts Council to host self-guided tour of art and gardens By COREY BULLOCK

Kimberley Arts Council is hosting the Bloom Where You Are Planted Art and Garden Tour on July 2, taking place in six gardens throughout the community. Mike Redfern of the Kimberley Arts Council said, “The hijinks and shenanigans of the special Canada Day 150th birthday party during Kimberley’s First Saturday arts, culture and heritage celebration on July 1, which will include the second annual bed race, no less, will be contrasted on Sunday, July 2 by an event offering the peaceful and sublime beauty of nature and art when the Bloom Where You Are Planted Art and Garden Tour takes place… “Kimberley Arts Council’s visual arts committee invites you to tour these lovely private gardens in each of which you will not only be able to enjoy the cultivated beauty created by the gardener but also the artistry of a Kimberley painter who

will be bust painting in the garden.” All six of the gardens will be open for viewings from 11a.m. to 3p.m. for self-conducted tours, “you can visit them in any order you wish,” said Redfern. “However, you are invited to finish your tour in the garden courtyard at Centre 64 on Deer Park Avenue where champagne and strawberries will be served from 1p.m. to 4p.m.” The gardens include the Romanowicz garden at 80 Kimberley Avenue, where Margaret Moe will be the artist, the Douglas garden at 58 Howard Street where Lori Joe will be painting, the Kennedy garden at 2111 Norton Avenue with artist Marianne Rennick, the Paterson garden at 437 Fortier Street where Grant Smith will be painting, and the Roberston garden at 373 Lindsay Street where homeowner Helen Robertson will be the artist in residence. This event will be replacing the silent auction at the annual Arts on Edge gala, as a fund-raiser for the Kimberley Kaleidoscope arts and culture festival, which will take

place from August 5 to 12. Art and Garden tour passes cost $20 and include the champagne and strawberries at the final destination. Passes can be purchased at Centre 64. Community fun at Marysville Daze By COREY BULLOCK

For 50 years the Mark Creek Lions have hosted Marysville Daze at the Lions Park in Marysville. This year the popular event took place on Saturday, June 3. As usual, the day started off with a pancake breakfast at 8a.m. The breakfast included two sausages from Cliff’s Meats, two pancakes, home made hash browns, strawberries and whip cream, and coffee or juice. Mark Creek Lions member Larry Armstrong says the pancake breakfast is, “the best around.” Kid’s events started at 10a.m. with various games, a bouncy castle, and a rock climbing wall courtesy of Spirit Rock. “It’s a good day for kids; it’s a family day,” said Armstrong. “We have parents that were [at the event] as kids, now bringing their kids.” After the pancake breakfast, there was a barbecue with hamburgers, hot dogs, and cold drinks for sale. Armstrong said that the Rotarians graciously supply the Lions with a kitchen trailer for cooking, “it’s a kitchen on wheels!” The market will began 8a.m. with approximately 15 local vendors selling candy, lemonade, mini donuts, crafts and more. Among the many activities taking place around Lions Park, there was also be a slow pitch softball tournament starting at 10a.m. on Saturday; ending on Sunday evening. Overtime brewery had beer gardens set up and there was a live DJ as well as live music from local musicians. The Kimberley Pipe Band played and were accompanied by dancers from the Kimberley Highland Dancers. Marysville Daze will ended with a meat draw at 5:30p.m. at the Marysville Pub, followed by live music at 9p.m.

held by ultra-nationalist, hard-right parties that are in thrall to the half-million-strong Jewish “settler” population in the occupied Palestinian territories. Most Israelis want to keep these lands, including some extremists who would kill or die to keep them (like Yigal Amir, who in 1995 murdered Yitzhak Rabin, the last Israeli prime minister to enter into serious negotiations with the Palestinians). No Israelis want to include the Palestinians in these territories into Israel as citizens. If they ever did, half the voters in the next election would be Arabs, and Israel would no longer be a “Jewish state”. But they can’t get rid of those Palestinians either without committing a horrendous crime. So they are stuck, and Israeli politics has been paralysed for the past twenty years. The man who has led Israel for more than half that time, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, epitomises that paralysis. He says he wants peace, and no doubt he really does — but he also wants to keep the land, or at least most of it, and his coalition government would collapse if he ever seriously considered giving it back. The great majority of Jewish Israelis, living in “old” Israel within the pre-1967 borders, rarely focus on this question, but they would be just as divided and paralysed if they ever had to answer it. This is not the end of the Fifty-Year War. It may just be the mid-point in the Hundred-Year War. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist based in London

Kootenay Ice add Cranbrook’s Jon Klemm as Associate Coach By BRAD MCLEOD

The Annual Spring Honda Fun Run was held over last weekend, raising funds for ALS BC. Charlotte Spring/Tegan Bova Files

Nitros’ Chase Miller to play Junior A with Calgary Mustangs in 2017-18 Team’s top rookie scorer set to return to hometown and move up to higher level of competition Josh Lockhart

Chase Miller is moving on to Junior A after one season with the Kimberley Dynamiters. The 2016-17 Rookie of the Year for both the Dynamiters and the entire KIJHL’s Eddie Mountain Conference signed with the Calgary Mustangs of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) this week. “Chase is very deserving of this commitment,” said Kimberley Dynamiters general manager and head coach Derek Stuart. “He had an excellent rookie season with us and has a very bright future at the Junior A level.” The 19-year-old Calgary, Alberta is excited about the opportunity to play an even more competitive level of hockey in his hometown while

furthering his education. He is grateful, however, for the opportunity that he had with the Nitros. “Playing in Kimberley under the coaching of Derek Stuart, who has been around

the AJHL for many years, really helped prepare me for this level of play,” Miller said. “Huge thanks to the town of Kimberley for the incredible experience. Hands down the best place in the KIJHL to play.”

Miller appeared in 41 games this past season and lead the Nitros in scoring during the regular season with 19 goals and 32 assists. He then added two goals and 12 assists in 17 playoff games.

Recently named Kootenay Ice head coach James Patrick announced on Wednesday morning that Cranbrook’s Jon Klemm is being added to his staff as an Associate Coach. Klemm, 47, joins the Ice after spending time as a coach of the WHL’s Spokane Chiefs. Before that, Klemm played pro hockey from 19912009 – including stints with the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Quebec Nordiques, Colorado Avalanche, Chicago Blackhawks, Dallas Stars and Los Angeles Kings. “During conversations with Jon it was clear very early he would add a lot to the staff, our players and the community,” Patrick said in a team release. “Jon has won at every level and that experience is invaluable for our group moving forward. “I know he’s going to put his heart and soul into the job and very excited to move home to be a part of the new Ice age.” Klemm – a defenseman - played in 773 NHL games recording 42 goals and 142 points. He won a Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 1996 and 2001. Klemm also captured the Memorial Cup in 1991 as a member of the Spokane Chiefs. Klemm began his coaching career as an assistant with Spokane in 2009 and spent three seasons with the team. In 2013, he moved to Texas and has spent the past three seasons coaching youth hockey in the North American Prospects Hockey League (NAPHL). “I couldn’t be more excited to be returning home … when James called it was an easy decision,” Klemm said

Jon Klemm joins the ICE as assistant coach.

in the release. “I fully understand the passion and knowledge hockey fans have in Cranbrook and the East Kootenay region and I can’t wait to build something special with them.” The Ice also announced that Denis Sproxton is joining the staff as the team’s goaltending consultant. Sproxton has served as a goaltending consultant with Hockey Canada, Hockey Alberta and the Spokane Chiefs. His playing career included four years in the WHL and NHL tryouts with Philadelphia and San Jose before playing in the CIS and winning a national championship with Acadia University. Denis was part of the Spokane Chiefs that won a Memorial Cup in 2008 and won a Gold Medal in Torino, Italy at the 2006 Olympics as a member of the National Women’s Team. Denis is currently a part-time scout for the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights. In addition, Jake Heisinger is being added to the staff as Manager of Hockey Operations and Player Experience. Heisinger joins the

Ice after earning a degree in Business Management from Curry College in Boston, Massachusetts. He is a two-time nominee for the NCAA Hockey Humanitarian Award for his work within the Boston community. The Kootenay ICE are also pleased to announce that Assistant Coach Gordon Burnett, Assistant Coach Roman Vopat, Director of Scouting Garnet Kazuik, Trainer/ Equipment Manager Darcy Ewanchuk and Athletic Consultant Cory Cameron will be returning this season. “In order to provide an elite player experience you need to start with elite people that share the same vision,” said Matt Cockell President and General Manager. “We are excited to get to work, training camp can’t get here soon enough”. Klemm, in addition to the other new members of the Ice front office and hockey operations, will be attending the “#ICEcountry Drive to 25 Corporate Kick Off event presented by The Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort”. It takes place on Thursday, June 8 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

DEAR ANNIE by Annie Lane

THE ONE WHO GOT AWAY? Dear Annie: My wife and I are in our late 50s and met in high school. “Barb” was the girl of my dreams, a cheerleader, popular and athletic. We began dating as seniors and married after I graduated from college. After we married, I noticed that Barb had little interest in sex. I was always the initiator, and this seemed to irritate her and made our intimacy rare. I decided to bury myself in my work and ignored the issue. Today we are happily married and have children and grandchildren, and she is still my best friend. Sex isn’t as much an issue, as I am older and have ignored my sexuality for years anyway. While we were dating back when, there was another girl, “Helen,” who made it obvious that she was interested in me. Helen was easily the prettiest girl I had ever met, but I ignored those feelings and stayed true to Barb. I would see Helen at reunions -- the five-year, 10-year and 15-year -- and it took me a few months each time to get over the feelings that I had for her. We stopped going to these reunions, partly because we had moved to another state and it was inconvenient to travel. The most recent reunion was arranged over social media, and I kept seeing pictures of Helen. She is still gorgeous, married with children and grandchildren. Three years later, I am still compelled to Google her to learn everything I can about her. This has turned into a compulsion that I cannot stop. I haven’t told my wife because this would only create havoc in our marriage. I am not interested in speaking to a psychologist. My question is simple. How many people suffer from such feelings -- feelings that they may have made a mistake but must now live with it to save the feelings of another? -- Love Lost Dear Love Lost: I’m sure many people at some point indulge in a bit of “what if” daydreaming, whether it be about another person they might have married or a career path they might have taken. But we all know that the grass isn’t really greener on the other side; it just seems that way to those unsatisfied with their lot. Your crush on Helen has more to do with your relationship with Barb. The fact that you’ve ignored your sexuality for years doesn’t mean it’s not an issue anymore. Though every marriage is different, it’s important to share some form of intimacy. Redirect the energy spent Googling Helen into searching for ways to revitalize your marriage, whether through counseling or an open, noncritical conversation with Barb. Dear Annie: I love your column; I never miss it. Thank you for your advice. You’ve printed some letters from people complaining about noise. I can relate. I’m an 89-year-young man. I hear very well, but with too much background noise, I get headaches. I like to go dancing at least twice a week -- mostly to polka music. I avoid any bands that make a lot of noise. Even just being in buildings with loud people, I cannot take it. So I have troubles and sound like an old grouch. This is life. -- Sam K. Dear Sam: Thank you for reading the column. It’s great you get out dancing twice a week. It might be worth talking to your doctor about solutions to protect your ears so you can keep partying to polka indefinitely. Debbie passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 22, 2017 at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital with her family by her side. She was born in Smiths Falls, Ontario and was one of nine children born to Barbara and Archibald Graham. Debbie was the beloved wife of Larry whom she met in Ottawa, Ontario in 1968, married in 1969 and eventually settled in Cranbrook where they spent 48 years together. They raised three children who survive her: Rob (Ramona), John (Rhonda) and Angye (Travis) along with eight grandchildren. To those that knew her, she will be fondly remembered as a very caring and family oriented person. We will all cherish the memory that Family meant the most to her. Debbie has been cremated and requested that there be no funeral service. The family will gather at a later date to hold a private celebration of her life. Those wishing to remember her may do so by making a donation to the charity or foundation of choice. Condolences may be left for the family at www.markmemorial.com. Local NEWS Mental health still has stigmas attached Canadian Mental Health Association of the Kootenays spreading message of education By CAROLYN GRANT

Rachel Dean and Elaina Englesey of the Canadian Mental Health Association of the Kootenays have been visiting City Councils in the area, promoting the CMHA public education program. The goal is to get people in every community trained in Mental Health First Aid. While visiting Kimberley City Council last month they explained that there is still a great deal of stigma around mental health issues, but a growing body of evidence shows that promotion, prevention and early intervention initiatives have a positive return. “Rather than doctors or counsellors, it’s usually family, friends and co-workers who encounter a mental health crisis,” said Dean. CMHA would like to see a few city employees as well as others in Kimberley take the training in mental health first

aid. MHFA was created by the Mental Health Commission of Canada. Just as physical first aid is administered to an injured person before medical treatment arrives, MHFA is given until appropriate treatment is available or until the crisis is resolved. One program available is a basic two day, 12 hour training to help a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. You will learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health problems and provide initial help to guide a person towards appropriate professional help. Another program is Mental Health First Aid for adults who interact with youth. This training will assist in helping a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis. It addresses the unique

aspects of mental health in young people aged 12 to 24. It will assist in the identification of mental health problems, including eating disorders and deliberate self-injury. Two other programs, safeTALK and ASIST deal with suicide. safeTALK is a half-day training to help you identify people who may have thoughts of suicide, ask them directly about the possibility of suicide and connect them to life-saving resources. ASIST is a more intense, twoday training in recognizing people at risk, talking to the, and understanding their situations. There are group rates and special rates for non-profits who may wish to train their staff. If you are interested in the training, contact eenglesby@chmakootenays.org or call 250-426-5222, ext. 3041.

Enjoy the Symphony without leaving Kimberley, this Saturday at McKim Theatre.

Symphony in Kimberley Continued from A1 This past February the Symphony of the Kootenays was forced to cancel a program for the first time in their history, due to the massive snowstorm that hit the East Kootenay. The Kimberley show is a makeup show for that missed one.

Tickets for A Night at the Movies are available in advance at Centre 64, the Snowdrift Cafe and the Key City Theatre box office. They will also be available at the door. The Symphony of the Kootenays wishes to thank Alpine Toyota, who are sponsoring half-price youth tickets.
