SunMine not for sale

By CAROLYN GRANT
The City of Kimberley is still looking for partners to invest in the SunMine. It is not looking to sell the solar project, says Mayor Don McCormick. “The original plan was for us to sell our interest to generate cash for infrastructure,” he said. “The thought was the SunMine would still be there, there would just be a change in ownership.” However, a few key factors have come to light that make a sale virtually impossible. “The first factor is that we have a loan from the MFA (Municipal Finance Au-

money we got from a sale could only go into a reserve fund and make payments on the loan until the ten year mark. So there is no benefit to a sale.” Continued on A3
Man fined for tossing smoke out car window BARRY COULTER Townsman Staff
Cranbrook RCMP issued a fine under the Wildfire Act Tuesday to a man who tossed a lit cigarette out of his moving vehicle. Police responded to a complaint of a man driving on 14th Avenue in Cranbrook, who apparently tossed a cigarette out of the window of his moving vehicle into dry grass. Witnesses were able to provide a license plate number for an out of province Cadillac. The Cranbrook officer was able to
locate the vehicle and issued the driver with a ticket under the Wildfire Act for “Drop Release or Mishandle Burning Substance” which carries a fine of $575. “Cranbrook RCMP would like to stress to the motoring public that with the dry conditions in and around Cranbrook, it might only take that one cigarette being tossed out a window to cause a devastating and life altering wildfire in our area,” police said in a release issued Tuesday afternoon.

Kimberley’s Kaleidoscope From Celtic folk/rock to Flamenco dance and song By MIKE REDFERN

Bed Race is fast approaching; register now
August First Saturdays event will feature second annual Bed Race By COREY BULLOCK
The second annual Kimberley Bed Race fundraiser is fast approaching, so get your teams registered now. Event organizer, Emily Smith says it’s a great community event that gets everyone together, alongside the August First Saturdays event. Smith created the bed race last year as part of an enhancement to Kimberley Rotary Club’s pancake breakfast. “We thought that bed and breakfast was pretty fitting,” said Smith. “I think there will be a great turnout this year,” Smith said. “It’s part of the First Saturdays commitment to evolving events and creating partnerships in the community.” The Bed Race will take place on August 5 with the kid’s bed pan race at 10a.m. and the bed race itself at 10:30a.m., while the pancake breakfast will run from 9a.m. to 11a.m. and First Saturdays festivities will continue throughout the day. Last year, the bed race raised approximately $1200 for the Cranbrook/Kimberley Hospice Society, while this year proceeds will be going towards the Kimberley Arts Council’s Give Us A Lift Campaign. The Give Us A Lift Campaign is an ongoing fundraising initiative for the installation of a platform wheelchair lift at Centre 64. The race will take place on Deer Park Ave. between the United Church and Centre 64. There will be eight teams of five people, and
anyone can participate. “Similar to the bocce tournament [at Julyfest] we encourage teams to come up with names and costumes, and they are given time to decorate their bed before the race,” said Smith. The teams will win on an elimination basis and there are four prizes; one for best dressed and three for the race winners. Prizes include four gift certificates for $100 or more to the Sullivan Pub, Marysville Pub, Montana’s at the ski hill and the Elks. “The chances of winning are pretty good, considering there are eight teams and four prizes,” said Smith. Registration is $80 per team. Teams can register and find out more information at kimberleybedrace.ca. “Beds and frames are supplied for the teams,” said Smith. “All they have to do is decorate.” “Last year two beds lost their wheels mid-race and it was actually quite hilarious,” Smith said. “A member of the Bavarian Barbarians is a welder; she brought all of her equipment down and fixed the beds in the parking lot of Centre 64.” “Some of the guys from the Underground Mining Railway volunteer their time to repurpose the beds; weld them together, paint them etc.,” said Smith. “It’s so much a part of the spirit of Kimberley; everyone comes together to pitch in.”
The Kimberley Kaleidoscope 2017 arts festival kicks off Saturday evening, August 5, with First Saturday’s East Coast Kitchen Party outdoors at Centre 64 featuring the Celtic folk/rock band from Vernon, Cod Gone Wild, brought back to Kimberley by local musical impresario Keith Nicholas, who introduced them to Kimberley for the first Kimberley Kaleidoscope festival in 2014. Eight days later, on August 12, the festival closes with an evening performance in the theatre at Centre 64 by an act entirely new to Kimberley, the sensational Kasandra Flamenco Ensemble from Vancouver, featuring iconic Canadian flamenco dancer, Kasandra ‘La China’ Lea and her ensemble. Since they last appeared in Kimberley, Cod Gone Wild has undergone some changes in personnel. Group leader Andrew Mercer, originally from Newfoundland, remains at the helm as lead vocalist, guitarist, bouzouki and bohdran player. He is accompanied by classically trained violinist Sue Aylard who, when she’s not playing fiddle for CGW plays violin in the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra. Aylard has performed across Europe and North America. New to CGW this year are drummer and percussionist David Mihal who has lived and performed in Toronto, New York, and Los Angeles, Sean Bray, vocalist and guitar and mandolin player, named by CBC Radio as one of Canada’s all-time top 50

guitarists, and bass player Martyn Jones from Liverpool and PEI, who has 60 album credits behind him. Quite a heady line-up. The following Saturday night offers a totally different musical experience. Flamenco has its roots in southern Spain, but with influences from Latin American, Cuban, and Jewish musical traditions. Flamenco traditionally has three parts, dance, song, and guitar with contemporary flamenco also incorporating percussion. It is an emotional style of dance, the emotional power giving it its universal
appeal. Much has been written about the power of Kasandra Lea. “Kasandra is a power house of one and a notable icon in the world of Canadian flamenco dance and performance ….. Kasandra embodies pure flamenco. A master of technique and impeccable rhythm, she is both raw and elegant …… Kasandra’s art is uncompromising and relentless. Audiences are left breathless when she hits the stage with yet another hot blooded performance.” Backing Kasandra Lea, are singer Jafelin Josefina Helten,
guitarist Gareth John Owen, and percussionist/cajon player Davide Sampaolo. Together they are likely to take the Theatre at Centre 64 by storm in this wonderful closing night highlight concert. While admission to the Cod Gone Wild East Coast Kitchen Party is by donation, the Kasandra Flamenco Ensemble theatre performance is ticketed. Local NEWS Councillor embarks on campaign to have Marysville bench lands designated recreation CAROLYN GRANT
Having heard what Mayor Don McCormick has to say about the potential for light industrial use of the Marysville bench lands along Jim Ogilvie Way, Coun. Bev Middlebrook wants people to know there is another option, that being to designate the area as recreation land. The land in question is along Jim Ogilvie Way, across from the transfer station. It is a popular walking area for many Marysville residents. Currently zoned resource residential, the upcoming OCP renewal suggests designating a portion of these lands as light industrial. McCormick says it is unlikely a residential developer would want to build in that area given its proximity to the transfer station. He feels light industrial is a good use for the land, as Kimberley has a dearth of available land to develop for industrial use. Middlebrook has many concerns with this, and says she has informed the mayor that she will be starting a campaign to create awareness around the issue, giving her all to stop the industrial designation and finding an alternative site for industrial development. It’s important to re-
Coun. Bev Middlebrook member, Middlebrook says, that the industrial designation is not a done deal. “It takes a vote on the OCP by all councillors, and that will be in the future,” she said. “I feel it is my duty or role as Councillor to speak up, to let the public know what is going on and to get involved.” She says that she feels that any industrial development on the bench lands will change them irrevocably. “I believe the people are smart and they can see that an industrial park is the wrong fit for this area. I think they know that the statement that there would be “no noise’ from it that would go into Marysville valley is not real. The voices from people talking on the trail can be heard loud and clear, or the clang and bang from the wreckers travels everywhere, which also can be heard on the bench lands. Years ago the old dump was so loud that the peo-
ple complained of the noise and it was moved. “I felt that the utopian picture that was painted in the Mayor’s article was an industrial business park from the land of Milk and Honey, where you still want to walk around the building instead of the trees, while enjoying the views, trails and tranquility. With all due respect, it seems to be a white washing, it wouldn’t be the same at all. “I do agree we need business land that fits into our community and our values. I won’t argue that, we do need new tax dollars, just not that piece of land. We can’t afford to kill superb, precious gems as the bench lands, which is the Marysville Recreational Park. This nature area is well liked, it is flat and that invites wheelchairs and people with disabilities to walk there and we all need exercise. The rails to trails have been overcome by the bikes and sometimes it is not safe to walk. We need to find an alternative. “I have been told that the land needs to be a certain size, hence, the park area in the bench lands it is 11 acres, after removing the dips and valleys, focusing on this flat land. The Mayor told us that many acres are needed for a modern hi tech manufactur-
er, that will have big trades (but no noise), building suppliers. The confusing part was the picture is of a small cute business/ home like business, it didn’t seem realistic.” Middlebrook says that if the future businesses are indeed going to be that small, the area doesn’t have to be an industrial park but could be an industrial road, across from the former fertilizer plant. That would still provide tax dollars, she said. “When the time comes this needs to be transparent and clear, it affects Marysville residents the most but also Kimberley and our tourist. People move here and visit for these nature gems. We lost bootleg and we might lose 14 acres by trails. Some won’t care as they use the Nature Park or Lois creek trails, but that is what this area is to many, our park in Marysville and we care. We are told we have green space but this is special and we need to be heard that we value this land for recreation, it is our children’s future.” Middlebrook suggests that if you agree that the Marysville bench lands should be designated recreation, you should email Mayor and Council with your thoughts.

Shypitka resigns from Cranbrook Council; byelection coming TREVOR CRAWLEY
Following the resignation of councillor Tom Shypitka last week, Cranbrook mayor Lee Pratt announced the city will be appointing a Chief Electoral Officer by the beginning of August to coordinate a by-election for the now-vacant seat. Pratt said the city has a Chief Electoral Officer in mind, with the term officially beginning on Aug. 2. Following that, there is an 80day period for nominations and a campaign before the vote, which will occur on a Saturday yet to be scheduled, according to the Local Government Act.
Since it is not a municipal election year, a by-election must be held. Under provincial legislation, council has the authority to decide whether or not to hold a by-election if a council seat is vacated after Jan. 1 of an election year. Shypitka resigned in order to focus on his MLA duties, as he won the Kootenay East riding in the May 9 provincial election for the BC Liberals. Pratt lauded Shypitka’s input at the city council and RDEK table, noting he was a dedicated councillor who did his research on the issues and kept the public’s interest at the forefront.
City looking for investors for SunMine Continued from A1 There has been some real interest in this region around solar projects. Several companies have requested licenses of occupation from the RDEk in order to collect data. McCormick is all for that type of interest. “If we can get three or four of these installations in, we create a
cluster which then attracts business that services the solar industry. Southern Alberta is the next big area for solar development and there’s no reason why that area couldn’t be serviced from here. The real benefits are not the fields themselves but the products and services. That’s where
the jobs and boost to the economy are.” But there has also been some resistance developing. “There are people concerned that solar farms are big and they will take up too much space. So some are concerned about a proliferation of solar fields.”
McCormick said he would certainly be surprised if the ALR would approve any type of solar development within the Land Reserve, but he says there is plenty of suitable land in the RDEK. “There are brownfield sites that are very suitable. Old mills,
gravel pits.” McCormick says he hopes to be a champion for solar development in the region and that leads to another reason not to sell the SunMine. “In order to be credible as a champion, you have to have a vested interest.” McCormick says
there has been interest in partnering on Kimberley’s SunMine, although he cannot divulge too much information at this time. But it is important, to get the expansion going. “We still have the 1 MW with BC Hydro. But it’s really important to expand as
quickly as we can from a business case point of view, but also because if we don’t use the right to expand we could lose it. “The City doesn’t have the money to expand it, so the idea is to retain our interest and partner with someone to expand it instead of selling it.”

They are out of the box now, controlling almost all of the Kurdish-majority parts of northern Syria and many rural areas in south-eastern Turkey. Since Turkey’s President Recep Tayyib Erdogan re-started the war against Turkey’s Kurds two years ago, they have even taken control of some parts of the Kurdish-majority big cities in the south-east – and bits of them look like Syria’s devastated cities. As for Iraq’s Kurds, it may prove impossible to put them back in the box at all. Thanks to the collapse of the Iraqi army three years ago, when ISIS overran much of the country in a fortnight, the Kurdish Regional Government now rules over all the traditionally Kurdish areas of Iraq. It is effectively an independent country, and it has scheduled a referendum for September to make that official. Iraq’s government will fight that, of course, but unless the United States is willing to bomb the Kurds the way it bombed ISIS, Baghdad is unlikely to win. The Iraqi army couldn’t even have retaken Mosul without the lavish use of US air power. So there’s lots of fighting left to be done, and lots of opportunities yet for the United States and Russia to stumble into a confrontation. Stay tuned. Julyfest Classic Soccer Tournament schedule By COREY BULLOCK
Julyfest is fast approaching, with the highly anticipated Julyfest Classic Soccer Tournament kicking off at 8a.m. on Saturday. This is the 45th annual Julyfest Soccer Tournament, with just under 60 teams and approximately 1200 athletes participating. Event organizer Simon Da-
vidson says the weather is looking great for a weekend of soccer, “come check it out, it’s the best soccer in the Kootenays.” Teams from all over Canada will be in town this weekend competing at eight different fields across Kimberley. The following is a highlight of the schedule for Saturday: The Cranbrook men’s competitive team, The Unicorns,
play at 8a.m. and 11a.m. at Central field in Marysville, 3p.m. at Purcell. The Cranbrook women’s competitive team, the Ramblers, play at 9a.m. at Central, 12p.m. at Marysville school, and 5p.m. at Purcell. The Kodiaks, a women’s competitive college team out of Lethbridge, will play 9a.m. at Marysville school, 1:30p.m.
at Chapman Camp, and 5p.m. at Selkirk. The Kimberley/Cranbrook Ol’ Boys will play at 10a.m. at Blarchmont and 5p.m. at Marysville school. The Los Amigos, a Cranbrook men’s team, will play 8a.m. at Marysville school as well as 11a.m. and 4p.m. at Purcell. Davidson says some of the pe-
rennial favourites will be competing, including the Montana Rapids and the Green Monarchs. Last year’s runner ups, the Euro FC’s from Lethbridge, will be playing as well. The men’s and women’s finals start around 4p.m. on Sunday at Purcell field. For more information and the full schedule of events check out julyfestsoccer. com.
U12 Bandits win silver medal at home tourney
Brad McLeod Sports Editor
The Cranbrook Jr. Bandits baseball program hosted a pair of home tournaments over the weekend for U10 and U12 players. Both ‘Slugfest’ competitions were held at Confederation Park from Friday to Sun-
day afternoon and featured 12 total teams with a Cranbrook representative in each age group. In the U10 tournament, the Bandits earned a 1-2 record in the round-robin play after falling to the West Kootenay Tigers 19-2, the Lethbridge
SWLL All Stars 16-10, and then beating the Medicine Hat Crush 14-6. The single win was good enough for Cranbrook to advance to the bronze medal game where they lost to Medicine Hat AAA 9-4. The tournament
was won by the Tigers who beat Lethbridge SWLL 11-9. On the U12 side, the Bandits put up at 2-1 record in the round robin. They kicked off the tournament with an 11-5 loss to Calgary’s Rocky Mountain LL AAA, but then beat Moose Jaw 17-3
and the Medicine Hat Black Aces 11-8. The success booked them a trip to the championship game where they had a rematch against Rocky Mountain. Despite an impressive late home run, the Bandits ended up winning a silver medal after an 8-5 loss.
Cranbrook’s neighbour Kimberley was also represented at the U12 tournament. The Kimberley D-backs exited the round robin stage with a 2-1 record after losing to the eventual Rocky Mountain champs 11-5 but beating Moose Jaw 14-4 and Rocky Mountain
LL AA 10-9. In the bronze medal game, the D-backs fell to the Black Aces 7-5 and ended the weekend with a fourth place finish. The Bandits senior ‘A’ team kick off their district tournament in Whitefish, MT this afternoon.

Horgan, NDP cabinet get down to work By TOM FLETCHER
Premier John Horgan heads into his first cabinet meeting Wednesday with top priorities of moving ahead with elimination of bridge tolls in Metro Vancouver and increasing income assistance rates by $100 a month. At a news conference at Government House Tuesday after being sworn in along with a 22-member NDP cabinet, Horgan said he must then prepare for
a visit to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Ottawa and then a trip to Washington D.C. The U.S. visit is to make good on a campaign pledge to personally assist in negotiations for a new softwood lumber trade agreement. In a speech to supporters in a packed ballroom at Government House, Horgan repeatedly referred to the situation facing B.C. residents either evacuated
or on alert to get out of the way of forest fires. He said he wants to get to work immediately “so the people in the Interior don’t have to go home to a burned-out community with no jobs.” The government change is an immediate test for Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson, who takes over as forests minister in the midst of the fire situation. Victoria-Beacon Hill MLA Carole James received the

largest ovation at the ceremony when she was announced as deputy premier and finance minister. Horgan takes over as premier with the support of the three-member B.C. Green Party caucus marks the first change in governenment in 16 years. The cabinet has 20 ministers, including New Westminster MLA Judy Darcy heading a new ministry of mental health and addic-
tions. Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall is appointed energy, mines and petroleum resources minister, with the task of resisting progress on the Trans Mountain oil pipeline expansion project from Alberta to its port in Burnaby. Horgan said cabinet will look at regulatory options from the ministries that issue permits. Vancou-
ver-Fairview MLA George Heyman, a former executive director of Sierra Club B.C., takes over as environment minister. Green Party leader Andrew Weaver attended the ceremony and congratulated Horgan. “This minority government is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to do politics differently in British Columbia,” Weaver said. “We have an historic opportunity to put Continued on A10

DEAR ANNIE by Annie Lane
PLS COME 2 MTG Dear Annie: I have noticed a shift in common communication skills over the past few years in the workplace that I believe has been caused by texting, and it has quickly become a pet peeve of mine. I work for a large insurance company on the East Coast. I have noticed that work-related emails are becoming less and less professional, to the point where some are so vague that I wonder whether the sender realizes how the end product looks to the receiver. I need to point out that I am a 20-something woman, and I do my fair share of texting. However, when I receive an email from someone in a professional context, I expect to see more than “tks” or “u” or “mtg” in the body of the email. When I see those abbreviated words, I give the emails less importance and am often insulted by them. When did it become accepted practice to slip into what I consider a sloppy style of communication on the job? In my opinion, people are entitled to communicate in any way they please outside the workplace; however, slang-style writing is unacceptable in a professional setting. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest! -- No Texting, Please Dear No Texting: Though our society is

as advanced as it has ever been, it often seems like a dark age for manners. Shine a light by your good example. The next time you get a lax email from a co-worker, respond extra professionally -- with a formal salutation, a well-formed paragraph and a proper closing. Often this is enough to shift the tone of the whole correspondence.
Hagar the Horrible

It seems that today a lot of people -- too many -- have trouble differentiating between what’s appropriate at home and what’s appropriate at work. I, too, believe that in professional emails (or even text messages, if you find yourself texting a boss), it’s important to maintain a degree of formality. No one ever lost a job for erring on the side of politeness.

Dear Annie: I enjoy your take on advice, for the most part, as well as your concise answers to writers’ issues. Could you, however, consider dropping the term “caretaker” in favor of “caregiver”? Many of us older folks think of cemeteries when we hear “caretaker”! The latter is so much warmer. -- Russ Dear Russ: Goodness me. You’ve got a

point. I’ll go with “caregiver” in the future (unless, of course, I’m responding to a letter about cemetery maintenance). Send your questions for Annie Lane to dearannie@creators.com. BUDDEN, Phyllis Carol Mary “Carol” 1950 - 2017
On the afternoon of Wednesday, July 12, 2017, Phyllis “Carol” Mary Budden passed away at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital at the age of 66 years. Carol was born on November 17, 1950 in Ottawa, Ontario to Betty and Gordon Dunn. Carol was always the “life of the party”. She would light up the room when she walked in and she loved to have a good time. She was one who loved to laugh. Carol loved to play poker and she and Guy knew at least 150 people who enjoyed playing as well. Carol will miss her poker games. Carol worked at the customer service desk as Superstore up until September of 2015 when she retired. She was a doting mother to her son Richard. She was always involved in whatever he did be it baseball or hockey and would take on the team mother role often. Carol was famous for organizing fundraisers and being very active in whatever she did. Left to mourn her passing is her beloved husband of almost 48 years, Guy and her son, Richard (Chanelle) and two granddaughters, Madision and Zarah. She leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins in Ontario. Carol was predeceased by her parents, Betty and Gordon and one brother, Bob. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Condolences may be left for the family at www. markmemorial.com. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, #202 – 105 9th Ave. S., Cranbrook, BC V1C 2M1.
