or professional photographer Laureen Carruthers, capturing the moment when a couple marries is both exciting and challenging. “I love the feeling of wedding photography,” said Carruthers, who has been in the business 14 years. “There’s excitement, nervousness, a little bit of fear and lots and lots of love. It’s constantly changing. It’s just a good, fun challenge for me.” One of the best in the business, Carruthers said she limits herself to shooting no more than 10 weddings per year. “I don’t take just every wedding that comes along,” she explained. “I want to continue to love weddings. And I make sure that I am a good fit with the bride and groom.” Tips to make sure your wedding photography is the best it can be on your wedding day

include making sure you feel comfortable and plan for everything, she suggests. “Plan for the weather, plan for things to go wrong.” And above all else, Carruthers said, keep a positive attitude. Carruthers has photographed weddings in locations across B.C. and Alberta, and even some tropical destination weddings. Now she is adding Tofino and the East Coast as her next dream wedding shoots. In the meantime Carruthers will continue to capture all those special moments in the lives of her Cariboo Chilcotin clients. “I love being able to share in people’s very special moments,” she said. “You realize that after you are gone, there will still be parts of you left.” Carruthers’ beautiful photography is showcased throughout this year’s I Do 2018 Wedding Guide.

the ring choosing

A diamond engagement ring represents love and commitment. It is an outward sign of the inward love you have for your bride-to-be. Before purchasing your diamond engagement ring, there are a few things to consider. The 4Cs of Diamond Quality Diamonds are priced according to the 4 C’s: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. In addition to the 4 C’s, shape (e.g. round, pear, marquise, oval, heart, etc.), brilliance, dispersion and scintillation determine a diamond’s value. Select Your Metal Engagement rings are typically made from one of three metals: platinum, white gold, or yellow gold. Platinum is the most expensive metal as it resists tarnishing, but it is also the most expensive to repair if damaged. Yellow gold rings are the most popular and are available in 14-karat or 18-karat gold. Although this type of ring can show scratches and other

abrasions, repairs come easy. White gold rings have a silver-like appearance which will eventually wear off and need to be replaced. The appeal of white gold is that it easily matches most other jewelry. Choose Wisely Engagement ring styles are individual and should match the personality of the person who will be wearing it. There are endless options of standard and custom engagement ring settings from simple solitaire settings to contemporary tension settings. Prong settings are among the most popular settings as they make the center diamond appear as though it is hanging, which creates an attractive sparkle. Many jewellers provide a limited time money back guarantee while others will give to you a lifetime warranty. Understand what you are buying and the policy before you make your purchase.

setting your

A

wedding date:

fours things to consider

re you and your partner about to take the leap into marital bliss? Here are four things to look into before you send out your save the dates.

1. THE SEASON First, decide during what time of year you want to get married. Every season has its own charm, but know that the high season for weddings is over the summer. If you’re dealing with a small budget, consider an off-season ceremony to get the most bang for your buck. Winter weddings can be absolutely stunning.

2. THE DAY OF THE WEEK If you feel like getting married on a Monday, there’s nothing stopping you from doing just that! However, the traditional Saturday wedding is a convenient option if most of your guests work Monday to Friday. Getting married on a Saturday is more expensive than on a Friday or a Sunday though, and you’ll need to reserve early to ensure that your dream venue is available. 3. THE SCHEDULES Open up your planner and carefully study your own schedule, and then ask your close friends and family about their own plans for the foreseeable future.

Remember to consider time off work, vacations and holidays, various appointments and other significant events (birthdays, baptisms, other weddings, etc.) that are already planned among those in your circle to avoid any major scheduling conflicts. 4. THE PROFESSIONALS Before you send out your invitations, make sure that the pros you want to hire are available on the chosen date. If you have your heart set on a certain photographer or caterer, secure their services as soon as possible so you don’t get left high and dry.

Destination weddings may appear to be an ideal way to tie the knot, but couples should know that planning such a ceremony may be even more difficult than planning a more traditional affair. Couples who choose to have a destination wedding must be ready to put a significant amount of faith in a wedding planner, who is often affiliated with the resort where the couple will be staying. Though the wedding planner may handle many of the details concerning the ceremony and the reception, couples should know that some of that planning will still fall on their shoulders as

wedding, it’s best to consider a few factors to determine if a destination wedding is truly the best way to go. • Guests: How many guests a couple hopes to invite is a great starting point when determining if a destination wedding is for you. Many couples who choose to have a destination wedding do so because they prefer a more intimate ceremony. Destination weddings are obviously more expensive for guests than a more traditional ceremony, so many guests won’t be able to afford to attend. Couples who intend to invite many guests might want to avoid a destination wedding. • Locale: The destination for your destination

wedding should be a locale that holds a special place in your heart. A random location that you find on the Internet might work out, but having some prior experience with the destination can help you anticipate minor, yet potentially problematic, issues. These issues can include the accessibility of the airport, currency exchange rate and the weather. In addition, you can help guests have a better time on their trips if you have already familiarized yourself with the locale. If you haven’t traveled much as a couple and don’t

have a particular place in mind, then you might find a destination wedding is more hassle than it’s worth. • Accessibility: A common problem many couples encounter when planning a destination wedding is the accessibility of their chosen locale. Couples will likely have to visit the destination at least once prior to their wedding, which will eat up some of your wedding budget and your vacation time (which you will need to save for the actual wedding and your honeymoon). If the locale is a remote island that’s not very accessible, that can make these pre-wedding trips pretty stressful. Accessibility should also be a consideration for your guests. How far will your guests have to travel? How much money will guests have to spend on airfare and hotel accommodations? The less accessible the locale is, the more you and your guests are going to have to spend. Accessibility of the airport is another consideration. Some island locales and resorts are known for their remoteness, which can be a problem for wedding guests. If the resort is a long ride away from the airport, that’s another expense for guests. The resort may provide a shuttle service, but that cost will fall on the couple and the shuttle may not run frequently, which can prove problematic when guests’ arrivals are staggered. • Legality: The law is another thing couples must consider when deciding if a destination wedding is for them. Laws vary depending on the locale, so before you commit to a specific locale, make sure you’re legally allowed to get married there and if there are any hurdles you must clear before you can. Those hurdles might be significant, and couples may find they’re not worth the hassle. Destination weddings are on the rise, but couples must consider a host of factors to ensure a destination wedding is truly for them.

wedding cake

choosing the

T he tall, tiered wedding cake — with or without

toppers — is one of the most widespread wedding traditions in the western world.

You’ve probably tasted a slice or two over the years, but what do you know about the origins of this sweet nuptial custom? wconcept of wedding cakes can be traced back to ancient Rome. At that time, it was customary to break a wafer or loaf of sweet bread over the bride’s head with the goal of invoking happiness and fertility. In medieval Europe, wedding guests typically stacked small pastries as high as possible, and the bride and

groom would kiss over the resulting pile of sweetness. The higher the pastry tower was, the happier the couple would be. Sweet, tall, tiered cakes like those seen today in weddings across North America only became commonplace around the eighteenth century. Nowadays, bakeries create wedding cakes that are true

works of art. Anything goes when it comes to the shape, flavour and colour — and toppers are no longer limited to the tiny bride and groom model.

A SYMBOLIC GESTURE The tradition of the wedding cake being sliced by the bride and groom dates back to the Middle Ages. The gesture symbolized the first action taken by the bride and groom as a legitimate couple. Traditionally, the groom rests his hand on the bride’s as a sign of fertility and protection.

the perfect dress

for the bride STOCK PHOTOS

Last season’s romantic 3-D floral details were still in full bloom, while plunging necklines were seen in almost every collection (get ready to bare that décolletage 2017 brides!), and big bold florals embroidered otherwise sleek minimal looks.

wearing Pantone’s colours of the year (Rose Quartz and Serenity) is the way to break with tradition. Rose colored dresses from Mira Zwillinger, Romona Keveza, Naeem Khan, and Hayley Paige for 2017 give a romantic vibe, while other designers are betting on “something blue” for the bride’s walk down the aisle.

Deep v-neck styles were seen at almost every presentation, from Marchesa, to Oscar de la Renta, Lela Rose, and more. One thing’s for sure, designers are counting 2017 brides to make bold, skin baring choices, and the result is elegantly sexy, perfect for modern brides looking to make a statement.

Ballgown

Get ready to bare those shoulders! The offthe-shoulder trend so ubiquitously seen on the ready-to-wear runways, finally trickled its way down to the bridal world. The trend was seen in both minimal and ornate styles. Toppers were also a big hit this season, making their mark in the form of capelets and bomber jackets. Oversized bows also grabbed our attention on the runways. Carolina Herrera, Sachin & Babi and Oscar de la Renta all accented their wedding dresses with oversize bows, be it as a show-stopping back or waist detail, a romantic addition to sleeves, or even attached to jewellery. When a bride takes a bit of a chance with colour, and this season it looks like

10 WEDDING GUIDE 2018

A ballgown dress is truly a classic style, evoking images of fairy tale princesses. With a fitted bodice and full skirt that flairs at the waist, this silhouette is usually good for all body types. Because the full skirt, typically poofedup by crinoline, will hide the hips and thighs, women with a pear shape might gravitate toward this style. The ballgown style may not be ideal for petite women, as the skirt may overwhelm their figures. A-line Another silhouette very forgiving or appropriate for many body types is the A-line gown. A-line cut dresses should be the go-to style for anyone looking to minimize perceived flaws. The cut of the dress will fit to the waist and gradually fan out from the hips to form the outline of an uppercase “A.” When in doubt, A-line gowns are classic and sensible and a favourite among brides. Trumpet Women who prefer something a little more form-fitting may select a trumpet silhouette. This dress is fitted through the body and then the gown flares out at mid-thigh level.

Women with taut stomachs and hourglass figures can benefit from this style gown, but those who do not want anything tight in the hips and thighs will want to select something else.

Tea Length

Mermaid

Sheath

A bit more fitted than the trumpet, this silhouette is close to the body from the chest down to the knee. The skirt then flares out slightly by the knee. Tall, thin women generally look best in this type of gown.

Lean brides who want simplicity in their gowns can opt for a sheath silhouette. The narrow shape of the gown from the neckline to the hem will definitely accentuate the body shape. Therefore, women who are shy may want to select a different option. Petite women who may be overwhelmed by more fabric can usually wear a sheath gown with success.

Modified A-line A balance between a traditional A-line and a more fitted gown, the modified A-line does not flare out as much. But it does flare out enough from the waist to hide areas around the hips and thighs. This is another good choice for a wide array of figures.

Brides who do not want a gown that reaches the floor can opt for a tea length dress, on which the skirt generally falls between the ankle and the knee.

Although a bride may have a wedding gown style in mind, it is a good idea to try on a number of different silhouettes to find the one that is most flattering. Bridal

choosing the right A florist has extensive knowledge when it comes to not only guiding you in flower choices but understands design and colour theory so they can take your general ideas and help you weave it all together into am amazing visual representation of your dreams. for this time. Take as much information as you can with you. Pictures of your dress, your colour swatches or images of the bridesmaids dresses, pictures of flowers you like. If you have a Pinterest page then add your florist so she can see what types of bouquets are catching your eye and help you pinpoint what it is that you like in them. The more you know about your dream wedding the better your florist can help you. Most importantly go into your consultation knowing what your

budget will be for flowers and decor at the ceremony and reception. Even if you only have a rough budget in mind it is best to go to that appointment with some direction for your florist in that area. You may have fallen in love with the “perfect” bouquet on Pinterest that your florist starts to source material for only to find out that its a $300 bouquet and your budget was only $500 for all the flowers. Wedding flowers are difficult to budget for. Usually flowers and decor for a wedding are the

most challenging to budget for and are often more expensive than people anticipate. There is such a large variety of factors that go into the cost. There is the actual expense of the flowers you choose which can vary from carnations that cost about $2 a stem to a rose that is about $5 to a hydrangea that is $12 or a stem of orchids that can be up to $65 a stem. In saying that think about this, it takes about 6 carnations to be the same size as a hydrangea and that stem of orchids has about 10 blooms that can be used for a whole bridal party. Another factor that goes into the cost of wedding flowers is time of the year.

With the ability to source product from all over the world we can offer most flowers all year long. That doesn’t mean they are the same cost all year. The last factor that goes into the cost of your wedding flowers is how difficult the design choice is. The more time and skill a wedding takes for your florist to create the more you will need to budget for. There are lots of ways to bring the cost of your flowers in line with whatever budget you have, make sure you spend time talking to your florist of choice to find out what all of your options are. With the evolution of Pinterest there comes the discussion of DIY wedding

flowers. If you are thinking you want to do your flowers yourself there are a few questions to ask yourself. The main one is why are you wanting to take on the designing? Are you doing the flowers yourself because you are artistic and want to create your own dream flowers? If that is the case that’s wonderful! Go talk to your florist for advice on product choices, availability of product and what supplies you may need. Have your

local florist bring in flowers and supplies for you so that you are working with quality product that will look amazing in your photos. If you are passionate about doing the flowers and have little or no experience then ask your florist if they can provide you with an hour session of training as to how to arrange your flowers! There will be a charge for this but will be very beneficial. If you are making this decision because you have

a limited budget I suggest that you go talk it out with your florist. See what kind of help they can offer you. You may be surprised at what options you find out! This day is all about beginning a beautiful love story and a new family! Take the time to make sure you are making the right decisions for you when it comes to your flowers and decor as they are front and central in all the pictures of this most important day of your life. Your local florists are here to help make this day especially perfect for you!

There’s nothing like a handsome Groom in a great looking suit

standing proudly at the end of the aisle while he awaits the entrance of his beautiful bride- to- be. Here are some really amazing tailored and ready to wear options for his fashion taste and every wedding budget.

Black Tie Suave and sophisticated but yet a little bit cheeky. Today, the black tie suit is for more than just cocktail parties. It makes a statement that something important is about to happen.

Royal Blue Navy has been the obvious choice of weddings for a long time, it’s classic, elegant and timeless. Today it’s a slightly brighter shade of blue and a bit more fun. Check Mate And last but definitely not least, possibly the most daring yet fun way to dress for your wedding day - checks! It’s casual, cheeky and perfect for an outdoor or rustic wedding theme. Gentlemen do not forget the shoes! The shoes that you wear should compliment your suit and yet make a bold statement.

Light Jackets For a more relaxed vibe and steering away from the traditional look, the light shade jacket is perfect for complimenting the soft and romantic colour schemes that are so popular today.

Getting married outside can add a romantic, relaxed feeling to your wedding, but that doesn’t mean outdoor weddings are without their challenges.

• Staging Area If your wedding and reception are outside is there a nearby indoor location for you to use to get dressed?

• Seating for Elderly Guests You may be having a super quick outdoor wedding ceremony, but some of your guests still need a place to sit.

• Musician/DJ Needs Do you know what your musicians or DJ needs in terms of appropriate shade and temperature control?

• Tents and Shade If only your ceremony is outside you probably don’t need a tent, but you may want one if you’re worried about sun or rain.

• Food and Flowers Is your reception outside? Make sure to check with

• Lighting Is your reception lasting into the wee hours? Do

questions on when and what to give for a wedding celebration.

Whether you’ve been invited to a full wedding and reception in your hometown, asked to attend a destination wedding or simply been sent a wedding announcement, you probably have questions on the proper etiquette for giving a gift. Wedding etiquette may seem old-fashioned. And then just to mess with you, the rules frequently change. If you’re stuck wondering what to do, trust your gut. In the end, it really comes down to good manners and common sense. In the meantime, here are the answers to some of your most common questions on the

I was invited to, but don’t attend, the wedding? Yes. It’s customary to give a gift when you’re invited to the wedding ceremony, even if you don’t attend. I received an announcement in the mail but was not invited to the wedding? You’re not required to give a gift if you simply receive an announcement in the mail. It’s still nice to give something (and most people do), but there’s no etiquette faux pas in simply saying “congratulations on your marriage.” I already gave a gift at the bridal shower? Yes, you still need to give a gift. The shower and wedding are two separate events. If you’re invited to a bridal shower, it’s a safe bet you’re also going to be invited to the wedding. Keep this in mind before purchasing either gift. Figure out your overall gift budget and divide it between the two however you see fit. I’m already spending a lot of money to attend a destination wedding? Attending a destination wedding is a pricey endeavor and rightly feels like a gift in itself. Often, a couple hosting a destination wedding will let guests know their presence is their present, and if they do, you need not give a gift. If they don’t make this known, however, you’re still expected to bring a gift. If this is the case, it’s absolutely okay to factor the cost of attending the wedding into your gift-giving budget and give a smaller gift. How much should I spend? How much you spend on a newly married couple is a personal decision. It should factor in both your relationship with the celebrants and your personal budget. If you’re giving multiple gifts (say, for a shower and the wedding itself), decide your total budget first and then divide it between the gifts. What about cash? Like giving a gift from the couple’s registry, cash is also a great option. With cash (or a gift card to one of their registry stores), the couple can use their gift in the way they need it most to start their new life together. LAUREEN CARRUTHERS PHOTIO

how to plan a

kidfriendly wedding

re there children on your A wedding-day guest list? If so, make

sure the event is as fun for them as it is for the adults.

Hire a babysitter Employing an experienced babysitter will allow parents to fully enjoy the day themselves. A good rule of thumb is one babysitter per five children, but this will vary depending on the kids’ ages. During the ceremony Don’t seat all the kids together. Instead, ask that parents keep their children close by to ensure they stay calm and quiet. You may also choose to ask kids to participate in the ceremony, for

example by throwing rose petals or blowing bubbles as you walk down the aisle. During the reception Take care of your young guests as soon as they arrive. If the reception is taking place outside, set up bouncy castle or an obstacle course. Makeup artists, clowns and magicians are other options to keep the little ones entertained. During the meal Keep children in mind when planning your menu. They’ll prefer well-known dishes like chicken or pasta. Also, request that they be served first — to most kids, a five-course meal is a long, boring affair. Help them stay patient by providing some toys or colouring books. During the evening Make sure the children have access to a quiet, comfortable spot where they can play while the adults finish their meal. You may also want to bring a few movies for the little ones to watch when it starts to get late.

THE RSVP CARD It’s crucial to include an RSVP card with your wedding invitations so that invitees can confirm whether or not they’re able to attend the event as well as indicate if someone will be accompanying them. Be sure to provide a self-addressed stamped envelope.

a crowd pleasing

meal

Putting together a wedding menu that aims to please everyone is no easy task. Here are a few tips to maximize your chances of success. 1. Avoid strong-tasting meat. Not everyone is a fan of lamb, game meat or fish. Poultry, on the other hand, is usually a sure bet. Provide more than one meal option if you can. 2. Mix it up. If you’re serving beef as a main, consider vegetarian appetizers or seafood hors-d’oeuvres. Avoid serving the same protein in more than one course. 3. Trust the experts. Don’t be afraid to ask your caterer for suggestions. If you’ve hired a chef, include his or her speciality dishes on the menu. 4. Have a plan B. If there are children, picky eaters or people with dietary restrictions among your guests, try to accommodate their preferences as much as you can. They’ll definitely appreciate the thought.

tame wedding day When couples tie the knot, many changes are in store, many compromises will be made and many lasting memories will be created. But in the weeks and months before their big days, couples can easily get caught up in the whirlwind of wedding planning, never taking inventory of their feelings until their wedding days have arrived. Come their wedding days, couples should not be surprised if some nerves set in. • Keep an open dialogue. Speak with your future spouse about the things that may be causing your anxiety. Communicating openly and honestly is one of the foundations of a strong relationship. • Slow down and breathe. Wedding planning involves making many decisions, and sometimes couples move at breakneck

nerves

speeds. Make slowing down a priority. Try to enjoy a quiet dinner with just the two of you. • Address performance anxiety. Realize that your guests are your friends and family members who will be forgiving of any hiccups along the way. You’re bound to recover gracefully from any mishaps. • Work on confidence. Wedding fears may stem from inadequate self-confidence. Give yourself a pep talk and surround yourself with positive people. Wedding day nerves are to be expected and often have little to do with the decision to get married. Planning such a big event can be nerve-wracking, but there are ways to combat any anxiety that builds up as the big day draws near.
