2018 A-List

O

ur A-List feature is here again and it’s bigger and more popular than ever. We again received an overwhelming number of responses to our poll, and herein we will present the results of the voting. At the risk of sounding repetitive year after year, one of my favourite things about Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows is the various organizations and their members who dedicate countless hours to bettering our communities, from the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation’s annual gala and Fund Run, to the Maple Ridge Community Foundation and its Community Chest program, the Rotary Clubs and their annual Duck Race, Starfish Backpack and brown bag school lunch program, not to mention the Friends in Need Food Bank, and those tasked with caring for our rivers and streams, ARMS and KEEPS. What would Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows be without all of them and their tireless volunteers? Local residents know what I’m talking about, which is

why you recognized so many of them again in this year’s edition of the A-List. Local businesses relish making this honoured list and we thank our readers for taking the time to vote. Staff at The News look forward to this contest every year, intrigued by what our readers have to tell us. Every year our list adapts to our growing communities. Many of us have lived in this community for years, for me over 22 now. Over time, we tend to fall into habits, visiting the same stores and restaurants, attending the same events and activities, The A-List presents us with a new perspective of our fellow citizens and community, and we hope it might inspire you to try something new in our communities. Our communities host some of the best events and have some amazing local tourism activities, golf courses, regional parks and culture that are available for our residents to enjoy. Best of all, we are able to explore all

of these amenities while surrounded by the awe-inspiring natural beauty of the local mountains, lakes, rivers and trails that are a just a short drive away. There are numerous reasons why we all choose to live here and the A-List is a celebration of those reasons. We hope that by reading our feature, you

will find many more reasons to stay. So please enjoy our 2018 effort, and thank you again to those who participated by voting for your favourites. We couldn’t do it without you! Lisa Prophet-Craik, publisher Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News Black Press Media

My A-List: Dan Ruimy

A

s the saying goes, some of the best memories are made in flip flops. While I may not always wear flip flops, some of my most fond memories of being the Member of Parliament for Pitt Meadows–Maple Ridge have been created during the summer months. When I think of summer I think of time spent at the Haney Farmer’s Market. I see all sorts of people coming together to support our local farmers, businesses and organizations. As I walk down the long rows of vendors in Memorial Peace Park, I am blown away by the assortment of retailers. You see farmers with their hardworking hands selling juicy, sweet carrots and an older woman from a local orchard offering delicious bright red apples. You see a young woman selling all-natural hand soaps and diaper creams for people’s loved ones and a male musician playing uplifting music on his acoustic

guitar to entertain the members of our community. You also see organizations who are working tirelessly for our community and are seeking to educate visitors on how they can get involved. The amount of effort each and every one on of these individuals put into their product does not and should not go unnoticed. They work day and night creating a product that is of the highest quality for their buyers. They work hard to make ends meet, to provide for their children and families, and to give back to our community. This is why it is so incredibly important to support local. When we bring our money to local markets such as the Haney Famers Market, we put our money back into our community. Shopping local also allows us to keep our community unique. One-of-a-kind products are sold at markets such as these, and this is one of the many rea-

sons that makes Maple Ridge the incredible place that it is. The Haney Farmer’s Market also gives us the opportunity to get to know the people we are getting our products from. It allows us to be directly connected to what we consume, to know what Dan Ruimy, MP went into creating it, and to receive Pitt Meadows–Maple Ridge personalized customer service when making our purchases. are working daily to provide quality products for us. My A-List: ‘My favourite things’

W

hen my family first moved to Maple Ridge in 1995, we were apprehensive about making the switch from living on our sailboat in the heart of Vancouver to residing on the outskirts of the only city we had called home.

When our kids started joining sports, I was struck by the close proximity of so many of the sports fields and arenas to trails and walkways that allowed me to take a quick power walk while the kids practiced their sports.

centre for the Haney Farmers’ Market on a Saturday, or traversing the dike system from Maple Ridge to Pitt Meadows, I have always found that walking is very easy in our communities, as there are a lot of options.

My all-time favourite park for doing that was Cliff Park and falls, and I have fond memories of hiking and chatting with other ‘soccer moms’ through the trails that abut the field. To this day, I view this park as a little jewel amongst Narrowing down the things I nature’s perfect backdrop and I love about Maple Ridge and Pitt look forward to seeing my grandMeadows is challenging, as both kids playing there. communities have afforded our family many happy memories. I enjoy that I can bike or walk westward from the foot of Laity Street to Bonson Landing without ever leaving the dike, or the safety of a trail. And once in that area, the trail system along the river that Pitt Meadows has built, is beautiful.

Happily, though, Maple Ridge immediately offered us many ways to connect and we quickly transferred our love for Vancouver to Maple Ridge.

Having Golden Ears in our backyard is an added bonus. But my first choice is always the trails and streets within our own communities and I believe both cities deserve to be on the A-List for the work they have done in that regard.

Recognizing Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows’ Finest

My A-List: Katherine Wagner

W

hen considering my favourite places and things in Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows, I focused on those I’d miss most if I moved away. I love gardens, gardening, and would miss equally the advice and plant suggestions of Mark at Triple Tree Nursery and Mike at Amsterdam Nursery. A small edge goes to Amsterdam Nursery for their late winter hellebore and spring rhododendron selections.

My favourite public garden is The Rhododendron Garden at Whonnock Lake Park. When the public gardens in downtown Maple Ridge were dismantled in the late 1990s to make way for redevelopment, many of the unique rhododendrons were relocated to Whonnock Lake. Local Christmas craft fairs are high on my list. The Happening at Thomas Haney Secondary School and the Whonnock Weavers and Spinners Show and Sale are the two I look forward to every year. As a writer, I find many public spaces in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows inspiring. Two of my favourites are Davidson’s Pool in Maple Ridge and the waterfront commons park in Pitt Meadows. With their views of the Alouette and Fraser rivers, they are perfect for strolls and contemplation. My favourite public art installations are the poetry sidewalks in downtown Maple Ridge.

For wedding and Christmas gifts, I like to shop at Little Crickets Gift Gallery on Lougheed Highway. They carry unique handcrafted items by Canadian artists. I’m also fond of the local artist gift shop at The ACT Arts Centre. The ACT Arts Centre and the Maple Ridge Public Library are tied for my favourite public facility. Both offer excellent and varied cultural programming and services, and both support writers in our community. Writers need coffee, and I’m particularly fond of the brews at Stomping Grounds in Osprey Village, Pitt Meadows, and Kanaka Creek Coffee in Maple Ridge. All coffee shops in the area have been welcoming to me and my fellow Golden Ears writers when we gather to put down a few words, but my favourite is Waves in Pitt Meadows. They offer a no-charge bookable meeting room and are enthusiastic about their love of writers.

My favourite restaurants would all be worth a return trip to Maple Ridge: Humble Roots for breakfast, the Frogstone Grill for lunch and Kingfishers for dinner. I’d miss Tomes and Tales in Pitt Meadows for their friendly atmosphere and mix of used and new books. Black Bond Books in Maple Ridge is a great independent bookstore for new books. Both bookstores support local authors. I know that past ‘best of’ surveys have included ‘favourite politician’ so I am going to finish this with thanks to all the municipal politicians who are retiring after the upcoming election. Thank you for your service and a particular mention to Mayor Nicole Read, who I feel did an excellent job during trying times. Katherine Wagner is a member of the Citizens’ Task Force on Transparency, a former school trustee and member of Golden Ears Writers.

The smaller Genstar Studio Theatre is a flat floor “black box” style with flexible seating for up to 150 people. • Billy Miner Alehouse & Cafe: This is the perfect place to drink in history and watch the boats, trains

and motor vehicles pass by. The Billy Miner Alehouse & Cafe, on River Road across from the Port Haney West Coast Express station on the Fraser River, is named after the infamous Billy Miner, dubbed “The Gentleman Bandit.” Miner made it a point never to rob the small folk, but he did rob a CPR train in 1904 near Mission. The building originally served as the Bank of Montreal in 1911. Don and Bernice Gehring renovated the building and reopened it as the Billy Miner Pub in 1981. In 2009, the pub was transformed into the Billy Miner Alehouse & Cafe. The building has since been deemed and protected under the Heritage Act of British Columbia in 2011 in an effort to recognize and preserve the neighbourhood’s history. • Maple Ridge Public Library: If you’re looking to get away from it all and escape into the world of books, stop in at your local Maple Ridge

Public Library, located downtown at 22470 Dewdney Trunk Rd. The library is next to city hall and Fraser Health and is composed of two storeys and a meeting room and is wheelchair accessible. If you want to get connected, you can do that too in the library’s computer room. There’s also a periodical section where you can relax and check out newspapers from across the country.

Favourite View • Fraser River: It hosts a famous sockeye salmon run and has dominated B.C.’s past and present. The mighty Fraser River flows right by Maple Ridge and offers a constantly changing viewscape as the seasons come and go.

• Haney Place Mall in downtown Maple Ridge is the place to enjoy a soup or a sandwich in the food market, stock up on groceries or just grab a coffee and watch other people shop. Two big anchor stores at either end of the mall, Thrifty Foods and Wal-Mart, keep the mall a good place for people watching.

• Golden Ears Mountains: On one side of Maple Ridge is the river, but look to the north and the majestic peaks of the Golden Ears loom over Maple Ridge, making it unmistakeable where you live.

• Next to the mall, is Memorial Peace Park which is also a place to relax and enjoy the outdoors, no matter what the season, and watch people go about their busy lives. Concerts, rallies, or workers out for a lunchtime break makes it easy to people watch.

To get a closer look at the river, check out the view from the dikes in south Pitt Meadows near Osprey Village. • Kingfishers Waterfront Bar and Grill: Stop in at Kingfishers Pub and Grill on River Road, just west of Road. Favourite Fishing Spot • The Alouette River is formed at the confluence of the North and South Alouette Rivers. The smaller of the two, the North Alouette flows from Jacobs Lake south to its confluence with the South Alouette. The river flows over a minor set of falls about halfway from its mouth.

In the spring and summer, the chum fry are present in the river. The cutthroat trout like to feed on these and this can be the best time to fish for cutthroat trout.

The South Alouette originates on the slopes of Mount Robie Reid and flows into Alouette Lake.

In September, the chum salmon enter the river, but they’re closed for retention.

After exiting the lake, the river flows west before converging with the North Alouette.

Also, on odd years, pink salmon enter the river. It’s another opportunity to watch as the salmon make their way up river to spawn.

From there, the river flows west to join the Pitt River. The Pitt River flows south to join the Fraser River east of Vancouver. The Alouette produces steelhead, cutthroat, dolly varden, chum salmon, pink salmon, and coho. Not all are open to retain. Again, check your fishing regulations.

Fly fishing, bait fishing, or spin casting can all be done on the Alouette.

Once October comes around, the coho salmon make their way in. This species is open for retention, but you must check with the fishing regulations for quotas and openings.

fishing are the most popular methods used for this species. • The Fraser River is a fly-fishing paradise for salmon, trout and steelhead, and home to the enormous and ancient sturgeon. One of the oldest families of bony fish in existence, white sturgeon are distinctive for their elongated bodies, lack of scales, and occasional great size, ranging from two to four meters. Most sturgeon are bottom-feeders in river deltas and estuaries, and spawn upstream.

In December, steelhead enter the river. These fish are one of the best • Bring your tube to fish at Mike Lake, fighting fish. Fly fishing and float stocked with rainbow trout.

Favourite Place to Walk, Run, Jog or Hike • Cliff Falls Regional Park is tucked away into a northeast corner of Maple Ridge, but it offers some the most spectacular scenery, such as a water canyon. In its online description of the park, the City of Maple Ridge warns people to stay on the trails and observe the signs because of the steep cliffs.

Or, you can park at the Bell Irving Hatchery, farther south on 256th Street, and hike from the hatchery to the falls. Cliff Park and Falls is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. Cliff Falls is actually part of the larger Kanaka Creek Regional Park run by Metro Vancouver.

Favourite Community Event

• Caribbean Fest: “One love, one heart – let’s get together and feel all right” – those words hint about what Caribbean Festival is all about. It takes place every August and celebrates the music and foods of the Caribbean Islands. The event is a foodie’s paradise, with everything Caribbean from jerk chicken to curried goat. It now takes place at Albion Fairgrounds because of its growing popularity.

• Haney Farmers Market: Every Saturday morning from May to October, you know there’s a place that’s close by where you can get farm-fresh food within walking distance in the downtown. Whether it’s fresh, baked goodies, homemade jams or wines, seafood, poultry or fresh eggs, the display that sets up in Memorial Peace Park shows the bounty of our area. Haney Farmers Market opens in early May and goes to early October, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the downtown.

• Pitt Meadows Day: It seems that every Pitt Meadows Day Parade takes place in sunshine to allow a perfect parade down Harris Road. The event, which usually takes place in early June, has been going on for 77 years after originally starting as a strawberry tea in the 1930s during the Great Depression. Following the parade, there are kids’ games and entertainment for all. Next year, make sure you check out a long-standing Pitt Meadows tradition. The event originally started as a Strawberry Tea during the Great Depression and grew from there.

My A-List: ‘Thankful I live here’ It is easy to fall back on the beauty that we take for granted on a daily basis, the close proximity to lakes and mountains and nature in all its splendor. But without the right people, it is a wasted experience. I would bend over backwards to help everyone I know. And I know they would do the same for me. We are not made to simply exist. We are made to create friendships and help each other. And our community is full of people who give without asking, ‘What is in it for me?’ For that, I am thankful I live here.
