We don’t just call it the outdoors, we call it the great outdoors Kitimat is well-rounded to meet your needs Its prominence on the world stage has grown exponentially in recent years.

As a community we’ve always prided ourselves on the small-town feel, our connectedness and our nature. Lately it’s also been a bustling place as the community’s aluminum smelter prepares itself for another 60 years with a new modernized operation. Their project kicked off a wild economic ride for the town which has hit its peak, for now, even though we still have the proposals from a number of liquefied natural gas projects to think about.

Even so, it’s not just the prospect of employment that keeps people here. Otherwise you wouldn’t have the oldtimers who have lived here since getting off the ship, plane or train down at the old work site when Alcan first cleared the way for the original Kitimat smelter. Kitimat recently celebrated being 60 years old, and a fair number of people can remember its start. It was a multi-cultural, pioneering spirit which lifted us off the ground. Six decades later the town has settled well in to its own brand; a natural beauty with abundant fishing and existing as a gateway both to the Pacific Ocean and to British Columbia’s interior. In Kitimat we border all kinds of natural wonder.

The many hiking trails of Kitimat for you to enjoy North Cove Trail

Drive past the Rio Tinto Alcan smelter, and turn right on to Bish Forest Service road, and follow that for seven or eight kilometres. You’ll eventually see a sign for North Cove Trail. The trail follows a steep decline towards the water, where you’ll find a rustic picnic area and great views of the surrounding Douglas Channel. The hike is relatively easy (although all uphill on the way back) and goes for about one kilometre. Road access to the trail head was recently re-opened on a resurfaced gravel road. Be mindful that it’s an active forestry road, and there is one section of onedirection alternating traffic, so make sure to drive carefully.

Hirsch Creek Trail

Hirsch Creek Park has an easy set of trails. Families can simply pull into the park, off the highway, just before the Hirsch Creek Bridge on the way into town. Watch for the trail signs in the park. On the opposite side of the highway, spectacular views await at the Hirsch Creek Canyon. This one is a 6km (approximately three hour) return trip, but the trail is, again, an easy one, climbing only 100m.

Maggie’s Point Maggie’s Point is a scenic - and quick - trail along the salt water towards a gazebo. There may be a number of trees down on the trail, an effect from the last winter so please use caution. The turn off is on Kitamaat Village Road, heading in to the village itself, keep an eye out for a right turn off just before you reach MK Bay Marina. The road leads to a small (emphasis on small) parking area where it leads in to the walking path. The path itself is quite easy, ending with a set of stairs leading up to a gazebo. Once there enjoy the panoramic views of the Channel.

Mount Elizabeth

Looking for an even greater challenge? Then the steep and difficult Mount Elizabeth trail is for you. Drive north out of Kitimat for approximately 7.5km, then turn right just south of where the transmission lines cross Hwy 37. Follow the gravel logging road for 13.5km. From there, a narrow 4WD road runs 2.5km to the trail head. A hike of 6km gets you to the alpine and

panoramic views from what’s called Little Elizabeth. If you want to tackle the peak, it’s due east of you, but be very aware you are now essentially mountaineering - you will be traversing an exposed ridge that is at points extremely narrow and hazardous. Therefore we urge you not to try for the peak unless properly equipped and the weather is absolutely clear.

Coho Flats / Fishermen’s Trail A network of hiking paths that run between the Rod and Gun Club and the Coho Flats area is a popular trail within city limits that leads to the Kitimat river. Beware this year though, following a big snow storm in February the trails are in a bit of rougher shape, so come prepared for the possibility of getting lost.

Robinson Ridge Forest Avenue, at the Kitimat Visitor Info Centre, takes you to the Robinson Lake trail. After driving along that road for about 1.9km, turn right at the Wathl Mainline, heading south for 3.5km, to the trailhead. Rated moderate, the 4km trail takes you past a series of small lakes and coastal old growth forest. Hike time is about 5-7 hours. Although the last 1.5km can be very wet, most of that problem has been taken care of by the construction of a raised wooden walkway.

Clague Mountain If the views over the Kitimat Valley and Douglas Channel are what you seek, try the Clague Mountain trail (locals pronounce it Clack). From the Service Centre, head north along Enterprise Avenue until you reach the gravel logging road. Follow that for about a kilometre then turn left and follow the side road 2km to the trail head. It’s a difficult 6km hike with a return time of 8-10 hours, but is well worth the effort. www.northernsentinel.com

That said, the Fishermen’s Trail starts at the Rod and Gun Club, and does eventually connect to the Coho Flats trail, which also reconnects back to ‘civilization’ on Baxter Avenue and has a path down to the river. Follow the trails far enough and you’ll end up at the golf course too.

BE BEAR AWARE

Take care to avoid grizzly problems If you can’t bear the bears, take pause before you see paws.

HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE This is the single biggest killer of bears. When people allow bears to access garbage, they help create “problem” bears that are usually destroyed. During the early spring to late fall, keep garbage behind closed doors in your garage, basement or storage area. Put your garbage out on the morning of collection day and not the night before. Thoroughly clean your garbage containers regularly. Kitimat, as you may know, was an entirely planned and designed community. PET FOODS To avoid attracting bears, feed your pets indoors. If you must feed them outside, only put out enough food for a single meal and keep empty pet dishes inside. Store pet food inside your house. UNCLEANED BARBEQUES During bear season, clean your barbeque immediately after every use. Wash the grill or burn off the smells, food residue and grease. If you can smell your barbeque, then it is not clean enough. Store your barbeque in a safe place behind closed doors.

DUMPSTERS Bears are lured into communities by the smells of food and garbage coming from commercial dumpsters. The only way to keep bears out of dumpsters is to lock the lids down every night. Local businesses that use commercial dumpsters should ensure that their dumpsters are locked at the end of each day. FISHING The smell of fish is an attractant for bears. If a bear shows up at your fishing spot, leave as quickly as possible. If you have a fish on, cut your line and return when it is safe. Store bait somewhere other than your tent and keep your campsite clean. Stay away from the river’s edge when building a fire or cooking and do not cook near your tent. Under the new amendments to the Wildlife Act, it is an offense for people in B.C. to feed dangerous wildlife (bears, cougars, coyotes and wolves) or disobey orders to remove and clean up food, food waste or other substances that can attract dangerous wildlife to their premises. Conservation Officers may issue a written dangerous wildlife protection order which requires “the removal or containment of compost, food, food waste or domestic garbage.” If people fail to comply with the order they could face a heavy penalty of up to $50,000 and/or six months in jail. ~www.env.gov.bc.ca/cos/info/ bearaware/co_response.html

Spend just a little time in the Kitimat river and you’ll be hooked With five species of salmon and two of trout available to anglers, you can see there’s no shortage of action in our river. So when are there fish in the Kitimat River? Twelve months of the year. When’s the best time to fish it? Depends on what you’re after. If your heart is set on a monster chinook (Spring) salmon, the main run will start heading into the river in late June and there will be plenty of battles royale to enjoy right through July. These tackle busters are often in the 30-40lbs range but fish running 50lbs and up have sent anglers home with stars in their eyes — and aching arms. How to catch yourself a trophy chinook? The most relaxing is “still” fishing — anchoring your line and gear in the current with a weight and using a spinn-glo or a spin-n-glo/hoochie combo as the lure. Both come in a bewildering array of colours and sizes. For the more active angler, casting and “bottom bouncing” is the method of choice using either a spoon – there is even one named after our river, a Kitimat spoon, – or again a spin-n-glo/ hoochie, but with a lighter weight. Bottom bouncing is also the more successful method since, by varying your cast length and retrieve, you’re

searching out the fish rather than waiting for them to bump into your gear. (The use of bait in the Kitimat River is prohibited until Labour Day - and don’t forget, it’s single barbless hook only.) Because water conditions have a lot to do with your choice of lure and/ or colour, it’s a good idea to check with a local tackle shop to find out what’s working when you arrive. Another tip: get a copy of the tide tables even if you’re fishing on the river because a lot of fish tend to come in on the high tide. As the chinook peak, the first of the next wave start arriving in the river - chum salmon. Granted they are not as highly prized by many anglers, but if you get a fresh 20lb-er on the line you’ll be in a battle you won’t soon forget. You can be sure of lots of chum action through July and into midAugust and they are excellent when smoked. During this run in particular you’ll see numerous fly anglers on the river and be impressed by their rate of success. This is also when the pinks (pink salmon) come in - known as “humpies” for the hump back the

spawning males develop. They are utterly unpredictable in terms of the strength of the run - this is the only purely wild fish run in the Kitimat river. The runs of pinks can show varying swings in alternating years, showing either huge or low returns. Even so, trends over time have shown even “low” years can mean a run of 100,000. With chum and pinks both in the river at the same time, it can easily get a little insane. www.northernsentinel.com

Anglers can overnight at local town-run camp sites Operated by the city, Radley Park is the community’s premier campground, superbly located a literal stone’s throw from the banks of the river. And yet it is also only a couple of minutes from all the amenities of the downtown area. Set amongst trees, the sites come equipped with fire pits and picnic tables with sturdy shelters and plenty of supplied firewood. No shelling out extra money to keep a campfire going. There are electrical hook-ups available at a number of sites and the washroom facilities include coinoperated showers. There is a sani-dump, fish-cleaning station and even a smoker for your catches of the day as well as a fishing spot and boat launch at the end of the Radley Park road. Believe it or not, Radley Park is so appealing even

local residents frequently camp there for a weekend. The District of Kitimat also operates the Hirsch Creek Campground, just a short drive from town on Highway 37S. It’s further from town offering a quieter camping experience along the shores of Hirsch Creek. There are large fields for fun activities with your family, and of course trails along Hirsch Creek itself. Many visitors like to get even closer to their chosen fishing spots by camping on the banks of the Kitimat River itself. However, in consideration of other anglers and the environment, you are asked to make camp at least 30 metres from the water’s edge. For those who really want to get away from it all, the Kitimat Valley has several Forest Recreation rustic campsites such as Mount Elizabeth, Deception Lake, Enso Park and West Lake.

Channeling a good time in Kitimat Although it’s the abundant fish that draw most people on to the waters of the Douglas Channel, the beauty and marine life of the fjord is a bonus none forget. It’s also the reason why an increasing number of non-anglers leap at the opportunity offered by local charter operators to take to the briny and capture that beauty through the lens of their camera. But, back to the fish. Salmon, of course, are the big draw with chinook/springs and coho being the favourites. Although the early chinooks/ springs, destined for spawning grounds in the upper reaches of the Kitimat River, arrive in mid-to lateMay, the peak period begins in midJune with the first couple of weeks of July bringing “prime time.” Mid-July sees the beginning of the coho run which will peak a month later. They often mill around “out front” waiting for the right river conditions. But there are also salmon to be www.northernsentinel.com

had in the depths of winter. Known by the contradictory name of winter springs, these are US chinook whose ocean-going lives bring them north. The first can show up as early as the end of November, but the peak

Haisla Nation making their mark with major projects The Haisla Nation have been keeping busy with some very exciting projects in the region.

The Haisla Nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s community of Kitamaat Village is an idyllic waterfront community, a short drive from where Highway 37S meets Kitimat. The road winds its way down to the water, where you can see the Kitimat River draining in to the channel. The Village itself is home to talented Haisla artists, some scenic trails, and is one of the access points to get on to the Channel. In addition to the long-serving marina within the Village, the Haisla have expanded to take on ownership of MK Bay Marina, the only major marina in the Kitimat area. The former owner was the local

regional district. Through its corporate business arm, Haisla Business Operations Inc. and its business partners, including Mill Bay Marina Group, the Haisla Nation will upgrade, manage and develop the MK Bay Marina. The Haisla Nation have already committed resources to developing and expanding the capacity of the marina. The Haisla have other plans as well, including heading a floating LNG terminal plan for the channel. Their development efforts have also extended in to the District of Kitimat, with a planned complex, called Haisla Town Centre, to be constructed where Kitimatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s old hospital once stood, to be a collection of apartment buildings, office spaces, a hotel and a restaurant. The whole project will take several years to fully build, but is just another visible example of the growth of the Haisla and their business ventures in the region. www.northernsentinel.com

No business like snow business That aluminum snowflake on the right side of the highway as you drive into town isn’t just for show. With 268.5cm of snow recorded for Kitimat over the 2014/2015 winter (that’s a low end figure by the way, we had too much snow for a few days in February to even measure it) and 423.9cm on average, or roughly 14ft, we’re no slouches when it comes to knowing what a real northern white winter is. In fact, the name of our community is derived from Git-a-maat, a Tshimian description of the Haisla, which means “people of the snow.” Local amenities abound, however, to take advantage of our powdery resource. Down Highway 37S is the Onion Lake Ski Trails, a popular facility with kilometers worth of trails. The professionally laid out trails cover a variety of terrains. The local Kitimat Snowmobile and Hikers Club also maintain cabins in the area, including up Clague Mountain, located not far from downtown and is designated a municipal park. For a bit more casual fun, the Hirsch Creek Golf and Winter Club offers curling and it’s grounds are great for snowshoeing or for some family tobogganing.

Roars from hot rods give local wildlife a real run for their money on Canada Day weekend Simple words can’t adequately express the ear-shattering roar of hot rods on Haisla Blvd. The tradition of Kitimat’s Dave Saunders Memorial Hill Climb on Canada Day weekend is a popular one for people from all over B.C. You can tell which day is the Hill Climb when you hear the growls of hot rods inching to the starting line, which sends competitors up Kitimat’s Haisla Boulevard. It’s Kitimat’s major thoroughfare, but traffic gets temporarily redirected for the competition. The competition is so named after a Kitimat racing legend, Dave Saunders who rode with his ‘partner’, the Purple Pig. He had been racing since 1975. Organizers in Kitimat rekindled the Hill Climb in his honour in 2009 and it’s been running, weather permitting, ever since.

A stage is always set up outside as well, where local and regional musicians play to an encouraging crowd. Even rain won’t hold back a Kitimatian seeking fun in the community. Canada Day celebrations are also joined by the Dave Saunders Memorial Hill Climb, a loud and thrilling uphill race on Haisla Boulevard. (See page 26.) Kitimat’s economic power house continues to raise positive noise We’re in a transitive time in Kitimat, as we embrace a new phase with Rio Tinto Alcan, and gaze to the future of Liquefied Natural Gas. It’s quite a time in B.C.’s northwest, and of course for Kitimat. We’re just emerging, as a community, out from a fast-paced whirlwind of construction and industry in the form of the Kitimat Modernization Project, which upgraded our Rio Tinto Alcan aluminum smelter. The nearly $5 billion project can be said to essentially be a move to a new phase of Kitimat, with a smelter that looks to another 60 years at least, of operation. RTA celebrated their 60th year of BC Operations in Kitimat last year with celebrations and fireworks at Kitimat’s Riverlodge facility. The groundwork laid with the modernization project will potentially carry Kitimat further with a fledgling liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry on the horizon. The direct connections are very visible. An agreement was made between RTA and LNG Canada, the proponent of a large natural gas export facility, for the LNG company to buy RTA’s Terminal B for their operations. The sale means RTA will extend

their Terminal A to allow for their required export capacity. That would leave LNG Canada with direct access to the water and to the foreign markets for their LNG. LNG Canada itself has been moving itself ahead in the regulatory process, providing open houses and community meetings. Chevron too, a 50 per cent partner in the Kitimat LNG project with Woodside Petroleum, already has their environmental permits in place. The company spent a good amount of time and effort to develop the proposed site of their plant, and the road leading out to it, which was once a bumpy forestry road but is now widened and better graded for public access. Even beyond those larger projects, there are a number of proposals of smaller ones, from AltaGas’ plans to utilize the existing PNG line to support a floating project, and the Haisla themselves with ambitions for a floating LNG project of their own, called Cedar LNG. The potential of these projects mean that there could be a lot of future work happening in town. Local institutes like the Kitimat Valley Institute and Northwest Community College are offering programs to get people up to the right level to be ready for whatever comes in the next few years. The Kitimat LNG project has already provided positive developments for Kitimat, namely in our rural road access. The Bish Forest Service Road had been closed to the public while Chevron conducted its early works, but at the same time they were also resurfacing Kitimat’s bumpy and narrow forest service road. With their early works coming to an end, the company re-opened the Crown-owned road to the public, and Kitimatians were treated to a newly accessible, cared for gravel road which provides access to great views of the Channel, and to the popular North Cove trail.
