MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR With the warmer temperatures of spring and summer, it’s time for all of us to stretch our legs and enjoy the natural beauty of Chilliwack. I find this is the best time of year to dust off my bicycle and spend some time in the fresh air on one of our many trails. If you’re looking to do the same, check out the Valley Rail Trail, or head down to the Vedder River and enjoy the view along the Vedder Rotary Trail. In addition to Chilliwack’s endless supply of outdoor recreational opportunities, the program lineup in this Leisure Guide offers something for everyone. Take a look at what’s being offered this season for some inspiration for your spring/ summer activities. The programs in our Leisure Guide are a collaborative effort. Each Leisure Guide contributor brings their own expertise, and as a team, we work to collectively address the needs and interests of our residents. Similarly, many of our facilities are operated by independent contractors with the expertise and knowledge

Townsend Park

Outdoor Sports Venues

The City of Chilliwack has more than 58 sports fields and 95 ball diamonds available to the community for recreational and league play. All groups and organizations who would like to use these fields must first obtain a Facility Use Agreement from the Recreation and Culture Department. Regular sports groups should contact their league scheduler for times and fields available. FIELD STATUS: An “OPEN” sports field is available for current permit holders as designated by the City of Chilliwack. However, when sports fields are designated open, pre-game field checks still must be completed by the officials and/or coaches to verify the safety and playability of the surface at that time. City of Chilliwack fields that have become unsafe or are in a position to sustain significant surface damage should be closed by the officials and/or coaches. Information can be found at chilliwack.com/fields.

Townsend Park is a 15 hectare park west of downtown Chilliwack. The park is named after Harold Townsend, who lived and farmed this land until 1946 when the City purchased it and began the process of developing a major public sports facility for ball sports and general leisure. The park is equipped with a Kinsmen Ability children’s play area, change rooms, concession, washrooms and other amenities. This outdoor facility also has a 2.3 km walking trail around its perimeter, and contains five multipurpose pitches, three of which are lit, and six lit softball diamonds. Diamonds 1 to 6 radiate out from the centrally located washrooms, concession and a pavilion capable of seating 80 people. These facilities are all easily accessible from the large parking lot at the west end of the park. Pitch A is an all-weather turf field correctly lined for football, soccer and field hockey. It is available for both competition and practice. Pitch A is completed by a scoreboard and an announcer’s viewing tower, fixed bleachers and excellent lighting. Pitches B through D are wellpositioned off of Wolfe Road and have a concession and washroom/change facility centered amongst them. These pitches do not have lights available.

Exhibition Field

Exhibition Field is considered one of the premier artificial turf facilities in the Lower Mainland. This outdoor facility is designed to accommodate football games for both CFL and NFL rules. The layout of Exhibition Field also allows it to be used as one full, three mini or twelve micro soccer pitches. With the large grandstand, four team change rooms and an official change room, Exhibition Field is ideal for hosting any premier sporting event in Chilliwack.

Off-Leash Dog Parks

Dog are welcome on a leash in all of Chilliwack parks (with the exception of the Cheam Wetlands and the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve) and are permitted in the designated off-leash parks located at Vedder Park, Vedder North Dyke Trail between Lickman Road and Webster Road, Island 22, Sheffield Dog Off-Leash Area and Cultus Lake. A new Yarrow off-leash trail section will be added in 2019. Dog owners are asked to adhere to the following guidelines when using the off-leash parks: • Dogs must be under firm voice and visual control • Dog owners must be in attendance • Dog owners must have a leash visible

Waterfowl in the Parks We get it! Feeding the ducks and geese in the park seems like a kind and compassionate thing to do. Did you know its actually the opposite? Below are a few reasons why. When feeding waterfowl you: • Disturb natural migration patterns causing overcrowding which can lead to disease and fighting amongst the population. • Destroy the birds’ ability to forage and find food themselves. • Deprive the bird of essential nutrients which can cause serious nutritional problems and even death.

• Dogs must display a current dog license and be up to date on their vaccinations • Dog owners are required to pick up after their dog and dispose of the droppings • Dog owners are asked to repair any damage such as holes that result from their dogs • Please avoid bringing toys and food to the park when other dogs are present

• Create less usable park area due to the high level of bird droppings left by the increasing waterfowl population. • And lastly…………….

• RUN THE RISK OF BEING FINED $2,000! That right; there is a large fine under Bylaw 2974 which prohibits the feeding of waterfowl in Chilliwack.

Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Sharing Nature with our Community

Come out and discover the tranquility of this nature reserve, where the focus is protection of this fragile wetland ecosystem and the flora and fauna that call this site home. Enjoy a walk and watch for a variety of wildlife, including one of the largest breeding colonies of Pacific Great Blue Herons in B.C. Hundreds of herons nest on site every year from March to July, but herons can be spotted fishing in the wetlands throughout the year. There are no admission fees to walk the site or to visit the Rotary Interpretive Centre, but donations are welcome to help support the conservation of this undyked floodplain habitat. The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Society manages the programs and services at this City of Chilliwack site, which is located along the Vedder River at the south end of Sumas Prairie Road in Greendale.

Site Features

• Beautiful Rotary Interpretive Centre • Blue Heron Gift Shop • Unique Wetland Habitat • Over 10km of walking trails • Trail Guide for self guided walks on site • Over 100 Pacific Great Blue Heron nests • Three bird blinds • Observation tower • Outdoor amphitheatre, picnic tables, and benches • Washrooms • Indoor Discovery Classroom and Wildlife Art Centre • Wheelchair accessible building & trails

Chilliwack Family YMCA

The Chilliwack YMCA offers a variety of ways for the whole family to be active! For Children

For Adults

Y Play Put your child on the right path for a healthy learning experience with Y Play—a brand new Chilliwack YMCA membership program designed specifically to support the growth of young children ages 0 to 5 years. Y Play uses an age-appropriate curriculum that provides children with the opportunity to develop their bodies and minds through play-based activities (i.e. singing, reading, creation play, building play), which support the foundations of language, literacy, math, science and the arts, and a level of physical activity that follows the recommended guidelines for infants, toddlers and preschoolers.

Q Strength A great multi-fitness class for all levels of exercisers using Queenax equipment. It’s also more than just strength training. The routines alternate with cardio exercises as well. Each exercise uses equipment you may not use every day, making this class a great way to add variety into your fitness routine. Give it a try and you will see what all the fuss is about!

Y Move The YMCA of Greater Vancouver and Sport for Life have developed a physical literacy program called Y Move for kids aged 3 to 9. What is physical literacy? It’s a program that gives kids the confidence, competence and motivation to jump into a pick-up game of soccer or basketball, or to participate in any kind of physical activity. Physical literacy contributes to a child’s desire and ability to participate in any kind of physical activity or play, not just in high performance sport. Swim Lessons Knowing how to swim can save your life — or even someone else’s. Taught by certified YMCA instructors, our swimming lessons will give you lifelong skills to help you be safe in and around the water. But there’s more to YMCA swim lessons than just learning to swim. We want children to build confidence in the water, meet new people, and hopefully develop a lifelong passion for swimming!

Cycle Fit Try out a class in our new dedicated indoor cycling studio. You can enjoy a low-impact cardio workout that is fun for every level.

Let’s face it. Sometimes life makes it hard to pursue a healthy lifestyle. The YMCA is a charity that raises funds to ensure that no one is turned away for financial reasons. Support through the YMCA Financial Assistance Program is available for individuals or families who face financial barriers to joining our programs and services.

Cycling Without Age Updates

Spring is around the corner, as is the official launch of the Cycling Without Age Yarrow/Chilliwack chapter. Our steering committee was thrilled to receive our first trishaw in late January. It travelled all the way from Copenhagen, Denmark, where the CWA movement was born. Thanks to the City of Chilliwack and a keen group of local supporters-who showed up to help unpack the crates and put the elegant trike together, we are now one step closer to launching the program. By offering seniors or differently-abled community members free rides in these specialized tricycles, CWA’s aim is to break down social isolation and foster inter-generational connection. How great is that for any and every community? If you’re interested in volunteering please let us know. If you know of an elder who’d enjoy getting some wind in their hair, contact us! Also, we are still fundraising for our second trishaw. Can you help? Please contact Sally Lum ph. (604)8230257 or email cwayarrow@gmail.com or FB: Cycling Without Age Yarrow www.facebook.com/ groups/1803299650375492

Trade Shows, Conventions, Concerts, Dog Shows, Horse Shows, Arena Cross Events, ABA BMX Bike Grand Nationals and local club events just to name a few. There is a seven acre field with plenty of space for camping for your event. There is also a rodeo arena as well as two outdoor sand arenas for your many different equestrian and agricultural events. All arenas are equipped with outdoor lighting for those evening rentals. Heritage Park, which has been operational since July 2001, is ideally and conveniently located just off the Trans Canada Highway at Exit 116. This allows for easy access by those within Chilliwack as well as people living in the Lower mainland. The striking presence of this 150,000 square foot red building and 65 acre grounds also attracts travellers from all over the Canada, as well as many visitors from the United States.

There is also a 48,000 square foot dirt floor and a 30,000 square foot dirt floor. We have 150 portable box stalls for your equestrian event that can be put up on either the concrete or dirt floors, depending on your requirements. Chilliwack Curling & Community Centre The Chilliwack Curling and Community Centre is the city’s newest recreational facility. The new building is located on the same grounds where the old Curling Club stood, next to the Chilliwack Cultural Centre and Evergreen Hall. The 30,000 square foot facility officially opened its doors in November of 2018. Unlike the old building, the new facility offers much more than just curling. Restaurant The 9th End Cafe is open to the public for breakfast and lunch, 7 days a week. Delicious home-cooked meals at very reasonable prices. The restaurant features homemade burgers, sandwiches, soups and all-day breakfast made from fresh local free range eggs. Please note that cash is the only form of payment accepted at this time. Weddings and Banquets Our beautiful modern banquet space can host up to 350 guests. Perfect for weddings, parties or other special events. Includes a patio, large dance floor and state of the art sound system. Banquet rentals are available with the option of full bar service and catering.

Meeting Rooms Our meeting rooms are available to rent for corporate meetings, training sessions and other gatherings.

Contact Us For more information or to make a booking, please call 604.792.1572 or email brenwick@curlchilliwack.org.

Dry Floor Space In the off season, the rink area can be rented out for many large functions. The curling ice comes out from April to August and the building has 25,000 square feet of well-lit concrete floor space available for rent. An excellent opportunity for a variety of purposes including trade shows, exhibitions and markets. Curling Our next curling season begins in September 2019. There will be many different opportunities to get started in curling. We will offer Open Houses, Learn-to-Curl clinics and Novice programs for those who want to get started in “the roaring game.” Curling is a fun, inclusive and social sport that is suitable for all ages and abilities. New curlers are made very welcome. Please follow our Facebook page or visit www.curlchilliwack.org for further details as we get closer to September.
