Celebrate the women in your life

Learn about feminist heroes. Learn the history of this special date and the movement towards gender parity. Read up on women throughout the world and throughout history who have made a difference. Have a movie night with your friends and watch films about women, especially women from other countries or cultures. Get involved. There are many ways you can get involved in your community. Join a board of a charity or organization or volunteer and actively participate in the work that they do. See if there is a local walk or marathon in your area. Marching, running or walking with other women can help raise awareness for the struggles of women around the world. Donate to a charity. Consider donating to one of the many organizations such as Amnesty International that work on women’s issues, locally and internationally. Donating to organizations working on women’s rights can help in the fight against gender-based discrimination, ensure women can access sexual and reproductive health services, and make sure that women who are human rights defenders can safely and freely carry out their work. Celebrate courageous women in your life. Take a moment to think of the significance of the women in your life and be sure to celebrate, appreciate and thank them.

BUSINESS WOMEN 2019 | 5 “She is a living demonstration of who Jan White was,” said Duggan. Moulton said it was an honour to be nominated. “I enjoy connecting with women in business,” she said. “It’s very easy volunteering because it’s such a great group of women here.” The first runner-up for this year’s award, Elanda Kowalchuk, was described as also a strong supporter of other women in business. “She’s clever, funny, super cool and interesting to interact with,” said Duggan. “She’s always there to support all women by attending almost all evening and morning monthly meetings.” Kowlachuk is membership director and vicepresident of Vernon Women in Business. Next year she will take over as president. Duggan said it was important to her this year that everyone had an understanding of who the late Jan White was and what the award is all about, as many members of the organization never knew her. “She really wanted this organization to celebrate women (and) their accomplishments,” said Duggan. “(She wanted) a place for them to grow and support each other.” White was a founding member for organization in the late 1980s and was described as a champion of all trades and a lover of horses. Her work and travel spanned four continents and included several jobs, including waitress, bookkeeper, legal secretary, accountant, consultant, singer, instructor, judge, teacher, counselor, columnist, dispenser, equine appraiser, promoter, director and designer. She was also a mother and active volunteer. “She was a force to be reckoned with,” said Duggan.

Start the presses: Writing and Publishing program returns Morning Star Staff Publishing isn’t dead – just experiencing an explosive rebirth as storytelling undergoes a digital transformation. To meet the content needs of the coming generation, the Writing and Publishing Diploma program at Okanagan College returns to the Vernon campus starting in September. The program infuses the range of English, creative writing, editing and communications material with applied technical skills in graphic design, typography, coding and book publishing, producing students who can publish quality content in a range of media. For second-year student Jennie Evans, who is writing a mystery novel, the program opened her eyes to a broad range of opportunities. “I don’t know if I can put into words how much I like this program. I thought I would get into copy editing after school, but my plans have 100% changed,” she said. “In this program we’ve done a lot of fine arts with writing, and I see how there seems to be a lot of jobs in graphic design. In the class, we have projects for real clients. Designing posters for a client like the Red Dot Players is rewarding, and shows real-world application.” Studying at the Vernon campus takes advantage of the Okanagan College Print

Shop, affectionately called “The Bunker” by students and staff. Located in the basement floor, the letterpress print shop features more than 20,000 pounds of vintage printing presses and metal type. Some assignments see students applying their typography and design knowledge by setting type by hand and printing that type on 100-year-old presses. Although many people only think in terms of digital publishing, instructor Jason Dewinetz said The Bunker experience offers students a unique learning experience. “I can’t stress enough what working in The Bunker does for students. It’s transformational. When they go back to the computer, they are thinking of things completely differently,” Dewinetz said. “We are all so tethered to the phones, that handson tactile activities like this really change their point of view. They’re getting dirty, they have ink on their hands, and then the real benefit comes when working in the three-dimensional world and applying it to the two-dimensional screen.” This intricate manual work is done in conjunction with training on industry-standard publishing software like Adobe Photoshop and InDesign – preparing students to work in multiple fields. “We have a large number of business students who take our courses because

they are interested in learning the software, and it gives them valuable skills for a variety of industries,” said Dewinetz, adding the technical skills are enhanced with broad understanding in editing, writing and graphic design, as well as what it’s like to work with real-world clients. This program gives students a taste of different disciplines before they specialize, and some have gone on to other programs as well,” he said. Second-year student Stephen Ikesaka had a specialty, but is also considering switching gears. He has published two novels under the nom de plume S.K. Aetherphoxx, and is currently working on the third in his Fatespinner trilogy. He started his own publishing company with the aim to help other writers, and found the program put him on a steep learning curve. “There is a really clear connection between good writing and the display of that writing. Things like typefaces, margin structures and how the human eye moves all affect how work is perceived. It doesn’t matter how good your story is, if it’s presented in Comic Sans, it is going to affect my reading experience,” he said. “With writing you can get comfortable, but this program challenges you to get outside of that comfort zone. I have grown a lot, and incorporated a lot of different styles that I

wouldn’t have considered before, but it’s made my writing more vivacious.” Students who complete the Diploma of Writing and Publishing can transfer to many university programs in B.C. to attain a bachelor’s degree in their desired field. Although he hadn’t originally planned to continue his education, Ikesaka said the program has opened those doors for him. “I’m having a great time learning. I’d like the ability to teach, perhaps as a buffer while I am working on writing projects, so that is why I’m considering graduate studies. For the first time in my life, I think I know what I want to be doing,” he said. An Information Night is planned for individuals who are interested in the program on May 13 at 6:30 p.m. in Room E102 of the Vernon campus (7000 College Way). For program information, visit www.okanagan.bc.ca/writingpublishing.

BX Press churns out unique cider at family orchard of historic BX characters. The company also boasts a botanical series. What started as a small family operation has steadily grown and now the cidery is looking to expand its amenities with a patio. “Our application is for a picnic area and patio which would allow people to enjoy a flight or glass of cider along with some light snacks,” said Melissa Dobernigg, who owns the farm and cidery with her husband and has a healthy staff assisting in production, including her brother. “We also will be having more events in the orchard.” Long table dinners, a summer concert series, Sunday brunch, Friday patio series, Stretch and Sip yoga social, cider tasting events and Sip and

Craft paint events are all on the books. Tickets are available at the events link at www. thebxpress.com. “Our goal to help create connections for our community with the land, our history, and each other - we feel sharing our beautiful orchard and authentic ciders made from apples grown right here is a great way to do so. We are just waiting for the LCRB to review and approve the applications.” Until the patio and picnic area are approved, BX Press will continue to operate with tastings happening every half hour. The Cidery is now open seven days a week, 10-5.

The addition is pending approval, but in the meantime the Regional District of North Okanagan has thrown its support behind the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch application. As part of the process for the proposed lounge and picnic area, RDNO sought input from adjacent property owners via mail. Nine responses were received, according to the Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce. “The concerns are about the (East Vernon) road and not the operation of the property. Most people are pretty happy with it,” said Amanda Shatzko, Area C director. A final decision on the licence application will come from the LCRB.

Or we may just stick with a distribution model.” The plan for the pitch to the Dragons is to showcase all the Back to Earth products, but highlighting the Canadian Kisameet Clay products. Local author gains popularity Morning Star Staff

With only a one per cent chance of being offered a book deal, the writing has to be great and the story unique. Blossom Turner of Lake Country wrote an inspirational romance with a twist. Anna’s Secret is set in the Okanagan Valley and geared for women of all ages who, first and foremost, enjoy a good love story and second, like to read a book that inspires them to grow personally.

Anna’s Secret launched May 1. After attending a writer’s conference last spring in California and submitting her manuscript to a company in the U.S., Turner has accomplished the near impossible, a book deal with a traditional publishing company. After this past year of edits to hone the craft and present the best work possible Anna’s Secret already has five-star reviews on both Goodreads and Amazon. Turner believes in writing for the entertainment value but admits that if enjoyment is the only takeaway, she would be

most disappointed. This is Turner’s first novel, but she is more than just an author, she is one of the owners of Savoy Equipment in Vernon and Kelowna. Her book was written to provoke thought and action on how to deal with human failure and find power in the gift of forgiveness, all tied up in a love story and a happy ending. The book is available on Amazon.ca and Amazon.com, at the local Indigo in Orchard Park, and Mosaic Books downtown.

Toby Risk is the managing partner of the East Side Liquor Company. Toby would like to invite you to come and explore the vast selection of cold beer, wine and spirits from all over the world. It is, however the amazing selection of B.C. V.Q.A. wines, hand crafted beer and ciders as well as spirits from our local distilleries that set them apart from many other liquor stores in the Okanagan. Literacy Boost Local kids struggling to read have dialed into some major support.

Jennifer Smith / Morning Star Staff The Telus Friendly Future Foundation has donated $10,000 to the After School Reading Program run by the Literacy Society of the North Okanagan. The program runs twice a year and enrolls 16 students, usually in grades 2 to 4 and some Grade 1 students, two days a week at the Vernon Boys and Girls Club. Kids are bused from their schools to the club, where they enjoy a snack while they are read a story. “Then we have different activities for them to do and while they do stations we pull two or three of them out and sit down and read with them,” said teacher Brigitt Johnson, who is joined by Brianne Mooney to spend some one-on-one time with the students. “Then we can really target what that particular student needs.” For some, it can be struggling to recognize short and long vowel sounds, for others it may be a challenge with reading strategies. “It’s really meant to support readers that have already had some instruction. They may just have some gaps.” And judging by the smiles on the kids’ faces, they seem to enjoy the program. “We call it a reading club and really try to make it fun because they’ve already

been in school all day,” said Johnson. In fact, the kids in the first program, which took place last fall, were eager to continue in the spring session. “We’ve had great feedback from the parents too,” said Wendy Aasen, Literacy Society executive director. Trina Devine works at the Boys and Girls Club and also has her son in the After School Reading Program. She said they have seen a major improvement. “My child is in the autism spectrum and at the beginning of school, they said he might not even finish Grade 1. Now we are doing Grade 2 studies. He has seen huge success. The light bulb turned on for sure.” And such success is continuing, thanks to Telus’ major donation. “It will go a long way,” said Aasen of the free program. “The Thompson Okanagan Community Board and the Telus Friendly Future Foundation are proud to support programs supporting vulnerable youth, and we are incredibly happy and proud to support this amazing program,” said Brangwen Mooney, Telus spokesperson. Those interested in the program can email programs@literacysociety.ca.

Community of caring grows more than 150 members and raised over $8,000 for Habitat for Humanity. The Vernon Chapter gathers at the Okanagan College Kalview Café run by Basketcase Catering (and are so grateful to Dean Jane Lister in allowing them space to hold these meetings), with the latest meeting recently taking place May 15. The Kelowna Chapter was astounded at the enthusiasm Vernon had for their first meeting—a true testament to the remarkable community spirit Vernon has. In the closing of their third year this past December, the 100-plus WWC group have awarded more than $102,000 combined to Habitat for Humanity, Family Resource Centre, North Okanagan Trail Riding Association, Mental Illness Family Support

Centre, People’s Place, Bill’s Place, Independent Living Vernon, North Okanagan Youth and Family Services Society, Canadian Mental Health Association, Vernon Chapter, Community Dental Access Clinic, the Cherryville Community Foodbank Society and the Vernon Women’s Transition House. On June 15, 2016, the first meeting of Vernon’s 100 Men Who Give a Damn took place at Martens Brewpub. Andrew Thompson and faithful sidekick Lyle Doucette wanted to pull like-minded, busy professionals together once a quarter for a beer, a bit to eat and a chance to “give a damn” for local charities and non-profit organizations. The quick, simple meeting structure seems to have been a hit. Fast

Jennifer Smith / Morning Star Staff There is a remarkable initiative alive and well in Vernon—the 100 Women/Men/ Kids Who Care—and they have raised more than $214,000 to date over the past three years in the North Okanagan. How? Quietly, efficiently and with purpose. It started in February 2016, when a group of five Vernon women got together and created the 100-plus Women Who Care, Vernon Chapter. Angelika Jaeger, Loreen Ruault, Noelle Crombie, Jamee Moffatt and Judy Rose (with latest member Bronwyn Watson now part of the group) were inspired by Rose Sexsmith spearheading the Kelowna Chapter and for their inaugural meeting, they had

forward two and a half years and 10 meetings, and Vernon’s men really have been “giving a damn.” They too have been very successful with awarding the Upper Room Mission, the Rail Trail, Teen Junction, the Food Action Society, the Society for the Protection of Kalamalka Lake, the Oak Child & Youth Advocacy Center, Vernon’s Live Well Clinic, Vernon Search and Rescue, and the BX Scouting Group over $111,000 combined to date. That makes over $200,000 injected into the local community over the past three years. Truly making a difference for many and varied causes in the North Okanagan all with four meetings a year and a handful of dedicated volunteers and loyal members.

BUSINESS WOMEN 2019 | 15 The 100 Men also met May 15. New to this momentum is a 100 Kids Who Care chapter in Vernon. March of 2017 saw a 100 Kids Who Care Vernon chapter form. It is a group of local youth between the ages of five and 17 that donate $10 of their own money four times a year to three member nominated charities that make a positive impact in the world. It’s about inspiring and enabling youth to make a difference and help them grow to be adults who believe they can change the world. There is an awesome app to make it easy for all to be involved and they offer family-friendly evenings to bring them together as a community of givers. The 100 Kids Who Care recently celebrated its one-year anniversary with the latest giving initiative on April 3. The 100 Women Who Care is a movement that started in 2006 in the northern USA by Karen Dunigan and has grown to over 850 chapters worldwide. There is a website listing chapters and offers tools and guidelines - www.100whocarealliance.org The basic concept is this - the group of women (men, teens, children) get together four times a year for a one-hour meeting, learn about local charities, and each donate directly to a charity that the group selects. This combined donation makes a real impact, without time-consuming fundraising events and planning. When a member attends a meeting, they get two pieces of blank paper. One is to nominate a charity and the other is to vote. Three charities that were nominated in the last meeting are present and have five minutes to speak to the group of their mandate and how the funds would be

used, should they be awarded. The members then vote, the votes counted and the winner is announced so that the members can make their cheques out to the chosen charity before leaving. As they leave, members leave their nominations for the next meeting. The committee randomly picks three charities for the next meeting. This way there is a bit of an element of ‘surprise’ for the members when they attend a meeting since the three charities chosen are not revealed until the subsequent meeting. All local Women Who Care members agree to write a minimum $50 cheque to the chosen charity, though many donate more. The 100 Men Who Give A Damn have a minimum of $100. The Kids give $10. The absent WWC members can mail in their cheques or send E-transfers to a chequing account generously supplied free of charge by Vantage One Credit Union. This way the 100+ Committees are truly just a tool to get the funds from the public into the charity’s hands quickly and easily. Women and men of all ages are welcome and accepted at every meeting. Only members who attend the meeting can vote and any charity that is awarded (by the women or men’s chapters) is not eligible for re-nomination for a three year period and they must be a North Okanagan registered charity able to provide tax receipts for the donations received. The 100+ WWC Committee hope that in 2019 every member will continue to commit to donating quarterly and with the current 165 membership count, they hope to hit 200 members and award $10,000 to the chosen charities. They are also looking for a social media volunteer to

assist with spreading the word about this worthy cause. For more information email 100womenvernon@gmail.com. All three committees and awarded charities to date would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for the amazing support the members have given with this concept. Not only are the funds always needed, but the opportunity a charity has of giving a five minute presentation spreads the word about their cause and has resulted of several cases of other donations being accepted outside the said voted awardees. Things like needed furniture, gaining new volunteers for their cause, or extraneous donations. It is truly a win win for all involved. If you would like to join the women, men or kids groups – contact them at 100womenvernon@gmail.com,

Annette Farkas I joined the Vernon Veterinary Clinic’s team in April 1994. Combining my love for both animals and customer service, joining the Vernon Veterinary Clinic was an easy decision. A perfect fit, the clinic presented itself as a warm and inviting environment from which working has been both rewarding and enjoyable. In 2011, I was given the title of Office Manager and although my role has changed, my priorities and passion for our furry companions and great customer service have stayed the same. Throughout my 25 years there have been many changes, clinic expansion, not only in footprint but with staff. I have witnessed comings and goings but despite these changes our dedicated team has never lost sight of our goal to provide an inviting and personable environment to both you and your pet.

Christine, Heidi, Heather, Dayce, Larisa We invite you to make it to the back of the store without an Arden Tile staff member saying “Hi,” “How is your day going?”, or “Is there something I can help you find?” Good old fashioned service is still very much alive at Arden Tile. Finding out early what our customers are needing can make their visit efficient and calming. Let’s face it, a little bit of attention is nice to receive every once in a while, and at Arden, you will walk away with a little more knowledge too. Arden Tile’s staff have been in the tile and hardwood industry awhile, and are always eager to catch the next seminar, webinar, or training trip. Last year, our staff all became Schluter authorized for shower installations. This year, it’s a trip to Quebec to visit the Boa Franc Vintage Hardwood plant. We do what it takes to ensure our customers get the right advice. If our training isn’t enough, it helps that 4 out of seven staff were previous installers. Come by and check us out if you have managed to miss us over the last 27 years. We will do our best to provide you with a comfortable and friendly atmosphere to make your search for the perfect tile, vinyl or hardwood and enjoyable experience.

New Vernon business takes home Enterprize award Morning Star Staff Back in December, Teresa Sanders read an article about what she calls “the myth of recycling plastics” that opened her eyes and her imagination. She decided to do something about it and came up with a business idea to provide refillable cleaning and hygiene products to the community. Her idea will soon become a reality now that Sanders has been named the 2019 Enterprize Challenge grand prize winner. “I am so pumped for the opportunity to reduce plastics in our community,” said an elated Sanders, who has won close to $20,000 in prizes provided by Enterprize sponsors. “I’ve seen refill stores in Chilliwack, Victoria, Vancouver, but noticed there was none here in the Okanagan. I am happy we can do this for the earth, but I am also happy for myself and to open the business.” Sanders was one of seven finalists who competed at the awards and challenger showcase, April 24, at the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre. More than 200 people attended the event, which saw the finalists display their business ideas in the centre’s foyer before giving the final pitch to judges in front of a live audience. “We had such an incredible calibre of entries this year,” said Kazia Mullin, business services co-ordinator with Community Futures North Okanagan, which has organized the Enterprize Challenge for five years.

“Judging from the applause and shouts of support, the audience enjoyed watching the finalists pitch their ideas to the judges. It was like watching the Dragon’s Den live and was exciting to see how well all of them did in their presentations.” Also new this year was the People’s Choice Award, where supporters could vote for their favourite showcase and pitch via an online survey. Ashley and Michael Reina, of Therabyte Inc., a cloud-based web application for therapists, won the People’s Choice, while Kayley Letendre, of Sugarbee’s Ice Cream Company, came second, and Marilyn Courtenay, of the Boarding House Café, placed third. “This was an amazing opportunity to learn how to start a business,” said Letendre, who gave out samples of her French-style all natural ice cream during the showcase. “I really appreciated the support and mentorship I had from my mentor, Scot McNair. He was instrumental in getting me to where I needed to be. Now the sky’s the limit.” Sanders also thanked her mentor, Amy Gillies, a commercial lender at VantageOne Credit Union, for her support. “I learned so much from working with her,” said Sanders, who is currently looking for a storefront space to open. “We had an incredible team at Community Futures and from the community who came in to help us with everything from marketing to creating a business plan.” Ted Morrison, VP of Commercial Banking

at VantageOne, who has served as an Enterprize judge for the past two years, says he was impressed with the calibre of all the contestants this year. “We ended up with 18 presentations at the beginning of the challenge, and all of them were fascinating. I learned a lot. To see the passion in the room was enough for me to think that we have a good future here in the North Okanagan when it comes to business talent,” said Morrison. She added that VantageOne Credit Union has supported the Enterprize Challenge as a sponsor since day one and plans to continue its support. Leigha Horsfield, general manager,

Community Futures North Okanagan, says the Enterprize Challenge would not be possible without the support of the sponsors who have not only donated the more than $30,000 in prizes but have helped in other ways. “This year, VantageOne Credit Union and another 14 organizations sponsored the event to make the challenge and its prizes possible,” said Horsfield. “We are grateful for the support and are looking forward to seeing our challengers reach their goals of opening and marketing their businesses. We wish them all the best.”

A little duckling thinks this dog is its mom. (Fiona Hook Photography - Image Studios)

Trying to do it all and expecting it all can be done exactly right is a recipe for disappointment. Perfection is the enemy. ― Sheryl Sandberg COO, Facebook

Photographer captures cuteness overload Brieanna Charlebois / Morning Star Staff A local photographer is bringing the farm to family photos. And some of the little critters are creating for some unique stories on social media. On theme for the Easter holiday, photographer Fiona Hook posted to the popular Facebook Page Vernon Rant and Rave recently to show the community how a little duckling confused her dog, Minnie, with it’s mother duck. ”Rant….to this silly duckling that thinks my dog is it’s mother,” she wrote, with a laughing emoji. But, in the comment section of the post, she clarified by saying, “Just kidding it’s a rave.” The post garnered over 200 reactions, over 30 comments and 15 shares by Saturday afternoon. “I’m a photographer here in Vernon and I raise ducks to take photos with children,” said Hook. “Minnie always loves [duck] babies and these ones have taken a special interest in Minnie, likely because they were only a day old when I got them.” Hook owns Image Studios in Vernon. She said the owner of the duck is Brae Trapp from Lumby. Trapp, Hook said, is graduating from high school this year and currently runs a business breeding ducks and goats.

Sarah McRae My husband William started Keshiki Gardening in the spring of 1981, I joined him shortly after. We had no idea of the great adventure that we had embarked upon. We have seen many changes. For instance, when we started out there was one fitness facility in Vernon and a telephone booth on almost every block. Today you would be hard pressed to find a phone booth but there seems to be a fitness facility on every block! We are now celebrating our 38th Anniversary and one thing that has not changed is our commitment to our customers. Whether it is grounds maintenance, irrigation services, snow removal or sweeping parking lots we pride ourselves in keeping updated and educated so we can give our customers the best services possible. We find great joy in our work, our customers and our life in the Okanagan Valley. Many of our loyal customers have been with us from the beginning, I believe that says something about our work ethic. 250-545-8220 keshiki@shaw.ca

Local mom threads Okanagan lifestyle Jennifer Blake / Morning Star Staff Asia Jackson, a full-time mom and nurse, didn’t expect to open a business. Riley + Autumn Threads, named after Jackson’s two daughters, is a local handmade baby and children’s clothing company. Jackson said her inspiration behind the business is her children and a love for adventure, mountain biking, hiking, nature, forests and the mountains.

Traci Jeeves & Team I would like to celebrate MY team of Women in business this year. Every year I see such wonderful Women in the issue highlighting their diversity of skills and am so proud to be included. In over 19 years of business, Okanagan Traffic Control has employed so many amazing Women that should get credit for making this industry not only safer but more in demand. I, Traci Jeeves, owner, am pictured here with a rock truck driver, long haul truck driver, single parent, retiree, chef, landscaper, server. gold panner, personnel supervisor, all very different with skills that many wouldn’t see while driving by. They are moms, students, book keepers and most of all the best team of friends a business owner could ask for. They are truly extraordinary women that deserve the recognition in my article this year. “The types of fabrics that I choose, I think are an Okanagan lifestyle,” said Jackson. “Lakes, bikes, mountains, nature, that kind of stuff.” Jackson began her journey to opening Riley + Autumn Threads about a year and a half ago when she was pregnant with her second daughter, Riley. She was in pre-labour for two weeks, unable to live her usual active lifestyle of adventuring and mountain biking, so she started sewing to keep her brain active and off the contractions. Jackson started with making a blanket and clothing for her children. Eventually, people in public and on social media started asking Jackson if she would make clothes for their children. “It just kind of blew up,” said Jackson. “I don’t even know how it happened so fast.” Even though Jackson started with baby and childrens’ clothes, she now makes maternity and nursing tops as well. You can even get a matching outfit with your kids. “What’s really important to me is that everybody’s really happy with everything,” said Jackson. “I work really hard to make sure that it’s just right for the person.” Each of Jackson’s custom pieces are made specific to each person, in both size and design. Though Jackson mainly does customs, some of her designs are available at Little Plum Boutique in Vernon.

There was a time when a career in business was reserved exclusively for men. But over the past few decades, women executives and entrepreneurs have fought to broaden this sphere for future female generations. To recognize the achievements of past and present-day pioneers, we devote one week each and every year to honouring businesswomen across the globe. This year, National Business Women’s Week will once again be held to celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of strong women everywhere. A disappointing reality Being a woman in today’s business world is still far from the norm. Despite the great strides made by women, the global business landscape still paints a rather one-sided picture. According to the International Labour Organization, women head only 10 to 20% of corporations, which proves that the future we so eagerly hoped for has yet to become a reality. Regrettably, men continue to be reluctant when it comes to being led by women. A bright future More and more young women are obtaining bachelor’s degrees in business administration. Additionally, there’s an abundance of inspirational stories relating the modern-day trials and tribulations of women in the world of business. These accounts offer invaluable lessons to future generations who will undoubtedly leave their own mark on the industry. Let’s encourage these young women to develop their business sense and to carve out their own place. Someday, equality will be the norm and women will be fairly represented in boardrooms and businesses across the globe.

OC Aboriginal planner wins national honour Morning Star Staff Okanagan College’s Marilyn Alexis is being honoured by colleagues across Canada for her work helping to build connections between the college, the North Okanagan community and Indigenous people and their culture. This week Alexis, an Aboriginal transition planner at OC’s Vernon campus, was named the gold medal winner for the Leadership Excellence Award for Non-Managerial Staff at the Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) 2019 Awards of Excellence in Niagara Falls. “Marilyn has brought incredible energy and vision to Okanagan College,” said Jane Lister, regional dean of Okanagan College Vernon campus. “She has been instrumental in recruiting Indigenous students, she’s dedicated hundreds of hours to create a beautiful indigenous garden on our campus, and she’s been a leader in hosting events in honour of women who have experienced abuse or trauma.” The CICan Awards of Excellence recognize best practices from institutions across the country, as well as individual leadership and achievements. There are three levels of recognition: Gold, Silver and Bronze. Alexis was grateful to be honoured at the awards. “Thank you CICan, it is a great honour to accept this award,” said Alexis. “I’m still in complete disbelief…winning this award is my biggest accomplishment.” Alexis has been an integral part in championing the college’s Indigenous initiatives and has made tremendous efforts to share the indigenous culture and build lasting relationships between OC and the community.

“I’m still in complete disbelief…winning this award is my biggest accomplishment.” One of Alexis’ greatest achievements is leading the creation of the Kalamalka Garden, located at the Vernon Campus. It contains indigenous food plants from the Okanagan territory, as well as other native species indigenous to this area, and it was developed to be a community teaching

resource of the region’s indigenous plants used by the Okanagan Indian Band. “Marilyn has created a warm welcoming place where Indigenous learning can occur in a hands-on interactive environment that is directly connected to the land her ancestors used to live on,” said Jim Hamilton, president of Okanagan College. “Her efforts have been truly admirable and we are proud that she has received this honour.” Okanagan College believes in Working With, and Learning From, the Indigenous Community. The college values an authentic partnership that benefits all parties and enriches the education of learners. “I have had many proud moments at Okanagan College,” said Alexis. “When I see our Grassroots Knowledge Keepers sharing their gift with students, staff and community, that is what I call building authentic relationships and transforming lives.” For more information on CICan visit collegesinstitutes.ca.

What are the keys to succeeding as a businesswoman? Driven by intense passion and endless creativity, successful businesswomen are determined and confident in their abilities.

The appetite for risk, the love for a good challenge, the desire to succeed, the longing to be one’s own boss, the appeal of a better balance between work and family life, and, most importantly, the immense passion for one’s job — these are the driving factors that are increasingly pushing women to enter the business world. Today, many women enjoy great success and inspire others to follow in their footsteps. But how do you become an accomplished businesswoman? Entrepreneurs normally have several essential qualities in common, starting with an unfailing desire to succeed. Self-confidence and leadership are two other important characteristics to have to get ahead in the business world — an industry that is still largely male-dominated. And that’s not all! To succeed, women must master the art of organization, sales and networking. But above all, they must demonstrate a high level of creativity. Furthermore, successful businesswomen aren’t only conscious of their capabilities; they’re also aware of their limitations. In other words, they aren’t afraid to delegate tasks that fall beyond their expertise to others. Being an entrepreneur means surrounding yourself with the right people, specifically trustworthy people whose skillsets contribute to the company’s prosperous future. Lastly, it’s no secret that the recipe for success includes a lot of hard work. Successful businesswomen are completely invested in their company and know the value of sacrifice. So, think you have what it takes?

Palette Hair cuts out creative niche Jennifer Blake / Morning Star Staff Armstrong’s Emily Jacob and her partner Fraser Pattison wanted to create a unique space and environment for their clients that was different than the typical salon or tattoo shop, where you can come and relax without being surrounded by numerous other stylists or artists. Jacob, who owns the hair part of Palette Tattoo & Hair, said the shop is a space where you can come to relax and unwind or turn up good tunes and have fun while creating a new hairstyle together. “You are totally free to be and express yourself,” said Jacob.

Jacob is a hair stylist who focuses on women’s hair and specializes in colour. She was inspired by the creative process involved in doing tattoos and she wanted to do the same with hair. “I was working at a tattoo shop,” said Jacob. “I just loved seeing the creative aspect of the artists with their clients creating something beautiful together.” Part of Jacob’s business is traveling to hair shows within Canada and the United States and running her Instagram @emily_snips, where she has 54,000 followers. Before Jacob was ready to open

her own business, she worked at Chatters for four and a half years, then at Black Magic Tattoo in Vernon with Pattison. After Jacob and Pattison decided to have their son, Ember, they wanted to bring their own business home to Armstrong. Palette Tattoo & Hair opened in spring 2017, and business has been increasingly busy since. Jacob said that the hardest part about owning your own business is learning

about business. “The challenge is just always trying to stay current and stay on top of it and keep an open mind and never stop learning,” said Jacob. Jacob encourages women who dream of starting their own business to follow their passion and gain the knowledge they need to take the first step. “Anything is possible,” said Jacob. “We as women can do anything.”

Fiesta feast at the beach

Fanny Chapman is ready to serve up some Mexican, and traditional, flavours at the newly opened Kal Lake Food concession at Kal Beach this summer. (Jennifer Smith - Morning Star)

Lisa Holmes

I visited beautiful Armstrong in the Summer of 1996 and I knew then that I had found my new home. Having a entrepreneurial heart with lots of energy and enthusiasm I did my research and opened Armstrong Wine and Brew four months later. With my amazing staff we produce the highest quality Wine and Beer using the finest ingredients. Our beer is kettle brewed from scratch using fresh malt, hops and grains. A true organic product! With over 18 international awards to date we continue to innovate and produce select sparkling and blended wines. Stop in and say Hi and see what we are all about on your next trip to beautiful Armstrong. Ask about our new bagged wine options, we tailor our products to meet your needs. We are the largest fully automated brew on premise in the North Okanagan and loving what we do!

Jennifer Smith / Morning Star Staff A passion for food and a flair for sharing Mexican culture have brought a sweet, and spicy, Latino face, and taste, to Kal Beach. Fanny Chapman, who many may know as the lady who opened El Gusto Latino Market in 2013, is running the concession at the popular Kalamalka Lake spot. Along with the classic offerings of hot dogs, burgers and fries, the Kal Lake Food Services stand is spicing up options for beach goers with Mexican options. “For me, when I sit on Kal Lake Beach it’s like the beach where I grew up,” said Chapman, of Caletilla Beach, in Acapulco. “There’s two beaches and a big dock. So when I sit there is reminds me of it.” In fact, her parents used to have a restaurant on her hometown beach. So being able to run her own kitchen at Kal Lake is like coming home for Chapman. Kal Lake Food will be in operation until Sept. 30, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily with extended summer and weekend hours. Chapman sold the Latino Market in 2017 and worked at The Morning Star in circulation for nine months. But the opportunity to open the concession called and came true for her. ”It’s my passion: food, customer service, entrepreneurial running a business,” said Chapman, whose two kids (12 and 14) will be helping her at Kal Lake Food. Chapman was born and raised in Aculpulco and came to Canada in 1993 to Dees Lake with her husband. The pair met in Mexico, while she was working at her parent’s restaurant. They corresponded by hand-written letters and phone once a week until he returned and they were married 26 years ago in Aculpulco.

Armstrong salon offers free haircuts for homeless Crystal Cove Salon is offering free services to the less fortunate once a month Brieanna Charlebois / Morning Star Staff Noticing a growing homelessness problem in the North Okanagan, Armstrong’s Crystal Cove Salon and Spa owner Jaime Wlasenko decided to try to help combat the problem and help people get back on their feet. Though originally hosting the program in Vernon, she moved her business to Armstrong in October and decided to launch a similar initiative: offering her services to the homeless or financially challenged for free. “The program that I decided to start is for the homeless and the less fortunate – people who can’t afford to go to a salon and have interviews to do or are trying to get their life back on track and just need that little extra help.” She held the first session Feb. 21, and said she plans to continue to offer these free services from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month. “Everybody and anybody is more than welcome to come in and get lice treatments, haircuts, anything the salon offers that will help people to have the self-esteem and self-worth to be able to do well in a job in an interview or just to hold their head up high on a bad day.” Though she notes that the homeless problem in Armstrong isn’t as bad as it is in Vernon, with a window-front shop in

downtown Armstrong, she said she sees homeless on a regular basis and wants to do her part to combat the problem. “I want to do something good. I’m really sad when I look around the world and everybody is so cruel to each other and everybody looks the other way, so this is a way that I can give back and feel like I’m part of the human race in the way its meant to be. If we all did something good once a day, I think the world would be different.” Wlasenko said that Vernonites interested in the service are also welcome. Partnering with the Vernon Community Futures, those who want to use the service are invited to go to the Community Futures office to inquire. She said they plan to set up a transportation service to bring individuals to and from her salon in Armstrong. Noting positive responses from the community since announcing the launch of her program, she issued a thank you to those who have supported her in this endeavor. “My [employees] are all on board and the town is on board and everybody is pitching in and donating money and shampoo and toques and all sorts of stuff, so it’s really exciting and really amazing.” Crystal Cove Salon and Spa is located at 2575 Pleasant Valley Blvd in Armstrong.

Owner Jaime Wlasenko launched the program because she wanted to give back to the community. (Brieanna Charlebois Morning Star)

She opened up Red Bird Acupuncture Clinic currently in the Russel/Inkster Heritage House on 25th St and works closely with chiropractors, massage and other therapists. Jenna was first inspired to complete a 3 year diploma in Acupuncture after studying Buddhist psychology and meditation in Vancouver. “I was fascinated with how we can influence our own bodies and came to realize how much medicine and healing we carry. I considered acupuncture was a fantastic way of accessing it.” Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine have been used for over 3,000 years as a complete system of medicine in China and in 1970 gained popularity here in North America. It is recognized by the World Health Organization to treat 60 disorders including pain, digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular, reproductive and psychological issues.

It is pure mythology that women cannot perform as well as men in science, engineering and mathematics. In my experience, the opposite is true: Women are often more adept and patient at untangling complex problems, multitasking, seeing the possibilities in new solutions and winning team support for collaborative action.
