Chowder Chow Down Champions
Andrew Bailey Photo
“Award-winning chowder is what we serve on a daily basis,” says executive chef and owner of Ucluelet’s Floathouse Patio and Grill Udo Lerch. He is tight-lipped when it comes to revealing any trade secrets. “It’s that good,” the chef assures. Lerch backs up his claim by winning the Pacific Rim Whale Festival’s Chowder Chow Down People’s Choice Award and Judge’s Choice Award in 2017. The following year, Floathouse was crowned the People’s Choice once again. The Whale Festival went on hiatus in 2019. The Chowder Chow Down is renown for being one of the most competitive culinary contests on the West Coast. With restaurants from both Tofino and Ucluelet serving soup to over 500 guests, the event is the ultimate showdown to see who makes the best seafood chowder.“I’ve been serving the same chowder for about seven years. I wasn’t thinking about winning when I entered, I just went in to have fun,” Lerch says.
