JAKE VIRTANEN TO FLY WITH THUNDERBIRDS AIR DEMONSTRATION SHOWCASES THE LOCKHEED MARTIN F-16 FIGHTING FALCON’S CAPABILITIES Vancouver Canucks right wing Jake Virtanen will do a media flight with the United States Air Force Thunderbirds at the 2019 Abbotsford Airshow. The Abbotsford native attended the airshow as a child. In the 2014 NHL entry draft, Virtanen was selected by the Vancouver Canucks sixth overall. Integrating solo routines and formation flying, the air demonstration showcases the Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon’s capabilities. A typical 75-minute show includes a choreographed, drill-style ground s h ow
and an air demonstration featuring around 40 manoeuvres. Their signature four-jet diamond formation exhibits the Thunderbird pilots’ United States Air Force training and precision. As well as being part of the demonstration team, the Thunderbirds personnel and jets can be called into combat when required. In less than 72 hours, the aircraft can be combat-ready as there are few modifications needed. The multi-role jet is a precision tactical bomber and air-to-air combat aircraft. When used in an air demonstration, the planes are painted in Thunderbird colours and a smoke-generating system is added. The eight pilots, including six demonstration pilots, making up the Thunderbirds squadron are supported by an air combat command

GROWING UP AT THE ABBOTSFORD AIRSHOW SEEING THE AMAZING FLYING MACHINES AT A YOUNG AGE HOOKED FUTURE PILOTS
The pilots flying Snowbirds #4, #8 and #10 grew up watching the Abbotsford International Airshow and are now performing in it as part of the military aerobatics flight demonstration team. Victoria’s Captain Logan Reid (@the8jet) is flying Snowbird 8 in the Opposing Solo position. As a youth, he attended the Abbotsford International Airshow with his father and joined the 676 “Kittyhawk” Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Saanich. In 2018, he was posted to 431 (Air Demonstration) Squadron and brings more than 1,400 hours of flying experience to the team. At age seven, Captain Arpit Mahajan (@the10jet) moved from Chandigarh, India to Delta. In 2016, he earned his wings on the CT-156 Harvard II and joined the Canadian Forces Snowbirds after completing training at 2 Canadian Forces Flying Training School in Moose Jaw, Sask. He is flying Snowbird 10 in the Advance and Safety Pilot position.

As a child, Capt. Boyd remembers watching the Snowbirds fly over his family’s place in Harrison Hot Springs and begging his parents to go see them at the Abbotsford International Airshow. “My dad took me to the show that year and ever since I wanted to be a pilot,” he said. Capt. Boyd joined the 759 Falcon Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Delta, where he received both his glider and private pilot licences. Snowbird pilot training begins by learning to fly the airplane solo. Then pilots fly in formation with two planes where they practice basic manoeuvers and banking

turns. As the training progresses, more planes and more complex moves are added. “Everyone flies off the boss and are primarily looking at #1. All communication goes through him,” said Capt. Boyd. Flying in formation leaves little room for error or miscommunication so the pilots are trained to think about the team and how their individual actions affect everyone else. “We’re always striving for perfection because every mistake impacts others,” he said. When the air demonstration season is in full swing, the 431 Squadron spends four to five weeks on the road at one time before returning home to Moose Jaw, where they are posted full time, to spend time with family and have the jets serviced. While in town for the Abbotsford International Airshow, Capt. Boyd expects a “Boyd contingent” of friends and family visiting from Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. w Canadian Forces Snowbirds performances are scheduled for all three days of the Abbotsford International Airshow, at 6 p.m. on Aug. 9 and 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 10 and 11.

UBC ROCKET TO PROMOTE AEROSPACE EDUCATION OUTREACH MEANT TO FUEL ENROLMENT IN STEM FIELDS IN UNIVERSITIES
The Abbotsford Airshow will be hosting the UBC Rocket team to spark interest in aerospace-related post-secondary fields. “This is the first time that we are featuring them in a big way because we are really trying to drive some attention to science, technology, engineering, arts and math,” said Jadene Mah, media coordinator for the airshow. Guests at the event will be greeted by members of UBC Rocket in the static display area for the duration of the three-day airshow. Their exhibit will have information panels, rocket designs and components along with some freebies to hand out during the event. Hubert Fortier, team captain of UBC Rocket, says Canadian interest for rocketry has been growing in recent years. “In the past five years there was little to no activity in terms of get-
Fortier said their exhibit was popular last year when the team attended the event for the first time. “It’s entirely new,” Fortier said. “Technically, our rocket was one of the fastest flight vehicles there.” This year, the team is showing off their Hollyburn and Sky Pilot rockets. The Hollyburn rocket was made by first-year students and is designed to travel up to an elevation of 10,000 feet. The Sky Pilot is a new rocket designed for 30,000 feet with a top speed of 1.6 times the speed of sound. The team launches three rockets a year and enters into international student competitions. At the Spaceport America Cup rocketry competition in June, Sky Pilot came third in the 30,000-foot category out of roughly 20 teams competing. Fortier said their team looks forward to doing public outreach events. “You get to talk to everyone, whoever’s interested in hearing Members of UBC Rocket at the Spaceport America Cup competition in New Mexico where their rocket, Sky Pilot, placed third in the more about rocketry or just wants 30,000-foot category. TWILIGHT SHOW
HOT AIR BALLOONS GLOWING, AND A FIREWORKS FINALE
The Abbotsford International Airshow’s Twilight Show is once again set to light up the night. Serving as a prelude to Saturday and Sunday’s big shows, the Twilight Show offers a completely unique experience, with daring routines performed in the fading light of the evening. Gates for the show open Friday at 3 p.m., with fans getting first access to the static display, exhibit area and the concessions. All of those features remain open until 7:30 p.m. The 2019 show kicks off in daylight, with opening ceremonies featuring the CF Skyhawks, the CF Snowbirds and more. The CF-18 Hornet demo follows at 8:30 p.m., with other later performers including the Aeroshell team and Manfred Radius – a sailplane aerobatic pyro act. An after-dark feature that fans will also want to check out is the hot air balloon glow. After the sun sets, watch as several hot air balloons become giant colourful lanterns across the airshow grounds. Organizers expect it to be an awesome spectacle and a perfect photo opportunity. It all concludes with the fireworks extravaganza. Not to be mistaken for any small-town fireworks displays, the airshow’s Fireworks Finale Extravaganza is one to behold. Ooh and ahh with the

AIRSHOW’S HISTORY WRITTEN IN THE SKY 1960S
The Abbotsford Airshow began in 1962 when the Abbotsford Flying Club held an airshow to promote flying from the Abbotsford Airport. The Flying Club partnered with the Abbotsford Rotary Club, which provided $700 to fund the event. The first show was a success, attracting 15,000 people. By 1965 the Abbotsford Airshow had become the largest airshow in Canada. In 1967, the Abbotsford Airshow was included as an official Canadian Centennial project and featured the RCAF Golden Centennaires and the US Navy Blue Angels, along with a broad range of aircraft from Canada, the United States and Britain’s Royal Air Force. Upon conclusion of the 1967 show, the ad hoc Centennial Air Show Society re-formed permanently as the Abbotsford International Air Show Society.

as “Canada’s National Airshow.” A cairn commemorating this designation stands outside the Abbotsford International Airport terminal containing rocks from all over the world – among them are cobblestone from Paris, granite from the original London Bridge and stone from the Matterhorn. The Snowbirds officially debuted at Abbotsford in 1971. The iconic Canadian team has not missed an Abbotsford show since. In 1974, King Hussein bin Talal of Jordan attended the Abbotsford Airshow and, upon returning home, ordered the formation of a national aerobatic team. The Royal Jordanian Falcons were formed in 1976 and performed the following year at Abbotsford. The Abbotsford International Airshow was officially recognized as a United States Bi-Centennial event in 1976, even though it took place in Canada.

an international aerospace trade show to be held in conjunction with the show. History was made at the show when Major Bob Wade, a CF-18 Hornet pilot, became the first western pilot to fly a modern fighter jet from the USSR. Major Wade took the controls of the Mig-29 along with Soviet test pilot Valery Menitsky. Attendance at the 1989 show reached a record 321,000 people.

The Hornet would return flying for the first time in Canadian colours in 1983 and has been an annual attendee ever since. The 1980s saw a significant rise in international participation at Abbotsford. The United States Air Force and Navy and Britain’s Royal Air Force were annual attendees. The Royal New Zealand Navy appeared in 1984 followed by the Brazilian Air Force display team, Esquadrilha da Fumaca (Smoke Squadron) in 1985. The 1986 Abbotsford International Airshow was held in conjunction with Expo 86 in Vancouver and featured five military demonstration
teams: the Patrouille de France, Italy’s Frecce Tricolori, the US Navy Blue Angels, Brazil’s Esquadrilha da Fumaca, and Canada’s Snowbirds. The USSR also made its North American debut with an Antonov An-124 and An-74. The SR-71 Blackbird was also on static display at the airshow – the first (and perhaps only) time the Blackbird has ever been on Canadian soil for public display. The 1986 airshow attracted crowds of over 300,000 spectators over the three days. Building on the success and international participation of Expo 86, the Abbotsford Airshow founded Airshow Canada in 1989,
In preparation for the 1991 Airshow Canada event, the 120,000-square-foot Tradex building was commissioned and built in just 100 days. Airshow Canada attracted 500 exhibitors from more than 50 countries and ran annually in Abbotsford until 1997. The combined profile of the Abbotsford International Airshow and Airshow Canada saw unprecedented international participation highlighted by rare appearances of Soviet aircraft and secretive American stealth aircraft. Present in 1991 were two Su-27 Flankers, two Il-76 Candids, a MiG31 Foxhound, Ka-32 Helix, and Su-26

2002 marked the 40th anniversary of the Abbotsford International Airshow – a milestone accomplishment in the wake of 9/11 and rising insurance costs threatening the air show industry. The USAF Thunderbirds returned for the first time since 1993 to co-headline the event with the Snowbirds. The first CC-177 Globemaster was delivered to the Canadian Armed Forces at Abbots-
2010S
The Abbotsford International Airshow celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012. As they did a decade earlier, the USAF Thunderbirds appeared alongside the Snowbirds as headline performers to commemorate the occasion. In 2014, USA Today named Abbotsford as one of the “Ten Best Air Shows in the World.”
www.abbynews.com That same year, the International Council of Air Shows recognized Abbotsford as one of the best civilian air shows in North America with a Pinnacle Award. The Friday Twilight Show was also added to Abbotsford in 2014 to great success. In 2016, the F-35 Lightning II – a candidate to replace the CF-18 Hornet – made its first-ever appearance in Canada on static display at the Abbotsford Airshow. Also notable was another potential replacement candidate – the F/A-18 Super Hornet – which performed a tactical demonstration at the 2016 show. Both aircraft would return and fly in the 2017 Abbotsford Airshow to help celebrate Canada’s Sesquicentennial (150th) anniversary. The US Navy Blue Angels returned to the Abbotsford International Airshow for the first time in 15 years in 2018. The event drew more than 110,000 people – the event’s largest crowd since the turn of the millennium.

STATIC DISPLAY POPULAR The WITH AIRSHOW VISITORS
Sprawled over 340,000 square feet of the airshow grounds, the 2019 Static Display includes modern military aircraft, historic warbirds, commercial aviation and general aviation. One of the featured aircrafts is the Luftwaffe A400M Atlas. One of 174 planes produced, this military transport aircraft can perform aerial refuelling and medical evacuation. It took its maiden flight in 2009. Students from the UBC
Rocket engineering design team will also participate in the Static Display. Dedicated to the design, manufacture and launch of suborbital rockets, the club wants to design and launch a liquid-propelled single-stage rocket to an altitude of 100km—into space. Adjacent to the UFV Boeing 727 in the Static Display area, the UFV Trades and Technology exhibit S.T.E.M. will host interactive activities.
Short for science, technology, engineering and math, the UFV Let’s Talk Science Outreach team helps connect educators and youth with volunteers to deliver meaningful science, technology, engineering and mathematics learning experiences free of charge. To learn more about the aircraft and organizations participating in the 2019 Static Display visit abbotsfordairshow. com/attractions.
