B.C. INTRODUCES MORE EFFICIENT WAITLISTS, CHOICES FOR SENIORS’ CARE HOMES Seniors waiting for a long-term care assessment can now wait for it at home The province is giving seniors and their families more options when waiting for a placement in long-term care, Health Minister Adrian Dix announced last month. According to the health ministry, the changes will let seniors and their families pick up to three preferred care homes instead of taking the first one that is available. The waitlist will work on a first-come, first-serve basis where those who have been waiting the longest get first access. Seniors can also opt for an interim care home while they wait for their preferred options to become available. In addition, seniors waiting for a longterm care assessment can now wait for it at home, with supports. “While a person is waiting for availability of their preferred care home, they will have more time to accept or decline a move into an interim care home,” Dix said. “Previously they had two days to
decide. We are now extending that to three days if the interim care home is the best option for them. “In addition, with few exceptions, the people who have been on the wait list the longest will have the highest priority to be placed in a care home. While on wait list for their preferred home, people have the option of waiting in an interim care home, or in the community with supports, while remaining on all the wait lists for their preferred care homes.
Your donations and planned gifts help fund medical equipment and major projects to expand healthcare services and reduce wait times at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
The move was applauded by the B.C. Care Providers Association. “BCCPA has been advocating for these changes for some time. We feel that these adaptations will go a long way in giving seniors more choice in the care they receive, which is fundamental to person-centred care,” said CEO Daniel Fontaine. He noted that now seniors could choose care homes that are closer to amenities or their children and reduce their feeling of social isolation.

VIU WELCOMES NEW ELDERS IN RESIDENCE AT NANAIMO CAMPUS Maxine Hayman Matilpi and Barney Williams join four other eldersin-residence offering support, traditional knowledge and spiritual guidance to students Vancouver Island University has two new lders-in-Residence at the Nanaimo Campus. Since the program started in the 1990s, VIU elders-in-residence have played an important role at the institution, providing cultural and spiritual guidance and other supports for students and employees, and supporting the use of Indigenous knowledge and language at the institution. Maxine Hayman Matilpi (Lakwa) and Barney Williams (Klitch-wii-taa) are the institution’s newest elders-in-residence at the Nanaimo Campus. Matilpi, of Kwakiutl/Ma’amtigilia and Scottish/English descent, also works for Vancouver-based West Coast Environmental Law as the project lead for the Revitalizing Indigenous Law for Land, Air and Water project. Through this project, she works with First Nations around the province to articulate traditional laws, finding principles of
laws within ancient stories. Aside from a career as a lawyer, Matilpi has a diverse and wide-ranging career background – she’s also been a paramedic, first aid attendant in a logging camp, can-can girl in Dawson City, midwife, fitness instructor, marriage commissioner, chief negotiator for a First Nation, elder-in-residence at North Island College and university professor at VIU. She remembers how important elder support is for students from when she studied at VIU in the mid-1990s, when it was Malaspina University-College.
Does everyone mumble? If so, it’s time to get your hearing checked. Nanaimo North 105 - 6560 North Island Hwy. Nanaimo South Unit 4 – 1150 Terminal Ave. N.
“Doing the Arts One program here was really grounding for me, it strengthened my identity before I went to law school at the University of Victoria,” she says. Now that Matilpi is back at VIU, she’s excited to help students realize their educational goals. “I remember, when I first decided I wanted to go to law school, being afraid to say it out loud,” she reflects. “When I was growing up, I didn’t know any lawyers. I can be that person for students. It’s an opportunity to give back and provide mentorship for students.”

Barney Williams (Klitch-wii-taa), a member of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation on Meares Island near Tofino, is also a VIU alumnus – he received his diploma in social work in 1973. As a young boy, Williams was taken from his family and put in residential school. Suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after this experience, he turned to alcohol. Eventually, he sought a career first as a social worker and then as a counsellor, helping others with similar experiences. “I came out of school beaten, downtrodden and really messed up for quite a few years,” he remembers. “As a result, I’ve devoted part of my career to investigating post-traumatic stress disorder and how it affects residential school survivors.” In his quest to help others deal with the effects of residential school, Williams worked for the federal government for 17 years as a social worker, travelling to different communities up and down Vancouver Island and the West Coast. Then he started working at an addictions treatment centre in Williams Lake and became a registered clinical therapist. For eight years, Williams travelled across Canada with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as one of the Indian Residential School Survivor Committee’s

It had the effect of reminding many of us how important family is,” says Williams, who received an honorary doctorate of laws from the University of Victoria in 2017 for his reconciliation work. Fluent in the Nuu-cha-nulth language, Williams continues to live a traditional lifestyle. EXERCISE AND AGING: HOW TO WORK OUT SAFELY AFTER 50 National Institute on Aging offers general advice In an ideal world, people young and old exercise each day. But as men and women age, finding time to work out is not so easy. Commitments to work and family often take precedence over daily exercise. As a result, many people 50 and over might not have exercised regularly or at all in many years. But as children grow up or even move out, people facing down their golden years are often compelled to get back in the gym. That’s a wise decision that can increase a person’s chances of being healthy and happy in retirement. But before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women over 50 should take heed of the following safety tips to ensure their efforts are not derailed by accident or injury. Speak with your physician. The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis can be physically active. However, anyone with such a condition and even those who don’t fall into those categories should consult with their physicians and
receive a full physical before exercising. Such a consultation and checkup can shed light on any unknown issues, and physicians can offer advice on how to safely manage any problems that may arise. Begin with low-intensity exercises. Even if you feel great and have maintained a healthy weight, don’t push yourself too hard at the start. Your body needs time
to adjust to physical activity, so choose low-intensity exercises like walking and light strength training so your muscles, tendons and ligaments can adjust. Initially, exercise every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts. Choose the right places to exercise outdoors. Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people, providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors. When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident. Boardwalks, public parks and outdoor gyms are safer places to work out than wooded areas or other places well off the beaten path. Stay hydrated. The NIA notes that many people lose their sense of thirst as they age. But just because you aren’t thirsty does not mean you don’t need water, especially while exercising. Water regulates body temperature and lubricates the joints, thereby decreasing your risk of injury during exercise. Exercising after 50 can help people live healthy well into retirement. But caution must be exercised when aging men and women return to exercise after a long break.

NANAIMO SEEKS DESIGNATION
‘AGE-FRIENDLY’
City council endorses task force plan which addresses seniors’ quality of life The City of Nanaimo wants to make the community a better place for seniors and everyone else. At a council meeting last month, councillors voted in favour of endorsing the age-friendly city plan that was brought forward by the Nanaimo Seniors Task Force. City staff, following council’s endorsement of the plan, have submitted an application to the province for official recognition as an Age-Friendly British Columbia community. The age-friendly city plan aims to enhance the quality of life for seniors living in Nanaimo by removing barriers and improving accessibility, social connection and well-being for everyone in the city. It identifies nine core areas – outdoor spaces and public buildings, transportation, housing, social participation, health and community services, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and volunteerism and employment, communication and
food security – that impact seniors’ lives in Nanaimo and provides a list of objectives for each area. Some of those objectives listed in the plan include improving crosswalk visibility, timing and proximity to nearby buildings, and advocating for high schools to include multigenerational support programs as part of the student volunteer curriculum in an effort to connect young people with seniors and “curtail” ageism. In an e-mail to the News Bulletin, Dave Stewart, social planner with the city, said the municipality recognizes the importance of “improving accessibility”

and “fostering inclusion” for people of all ages. “Getting recognition through the … program will show residents, visitors and future residents of council’s commitment to achieving their liveability strategic priority: To proactively plan for Nanaimo’s growth and focus on community infrastructure to support an inclusive, healthy and desirable place to live,” he said. According to 2016 StatsCan data, approximately 23 per cent of Nanaimo’s population is over the age of 65. The city is expecting that number to increase over the next decade. An AFBC designation would result in the city’s achievements featured in a section of the B.C. Healthy Communities Society website and newsletter, according to the provincial government. The designation would also give the city automatic eligibility to receive official Pan-Canadian AFC recognition, which is endorsed by the World Health Organization. Since 2012, 45 communities have received the AFBC recognition including the City of Duncan, City of Langford, City of Vancouver, City of White Rock, City of Richmond, City of Kamloops, District of Saanich and Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality.
Proud to be part of our community for over 30 years.
