HOLE NEW BALL GAME FOR LANGLEY STUDENTS

At exactly 11:30 am on a hot, sunny August day, the Langley School District Foundation’s Golf Tournament was underway. Little did anyone know that the 14th Annual would be the best one ever.

T

he orange shirt brigade started arriving at 8:30 am. Soon after a van drove up and disgorged its load onto the pavement. There followed a flurry of activity. Tents went up, tables were arranged in rows and a chorus of chatter broke the morning silence. Next a muscle-bound truck towing a 100-foot-long BBQ invaded the quiet parking lot. A beautiful woman leapt from the front seat and immediately barked out orders to burly men. Before too long the air was ripe with the sweet aroma of hamburgers cooking on a grille. The Tailgate party was imminent. Meanwhile, 130 golfers meandered through the registration lineup, patiently purchasing mulligans, putting and chipping contest chits, cannon shots, and raffle tickets. Volunteers scurried about, Redwoods staff organized and transported goods and people out to the golf course, thousands of questions were asked and answered, golfers found their assigned carts and foursomes drove to their starting holes. When the shotgun signaled, there was a deafening report as 18 clubs simultaneously connected with 18 balls. Some tore the cover

off their Titleists. Some drove the green. Others saw their balls ricochet from trees to traps to water. An elite few drove within an inch of the cup. Some started off with birdies, others with pars, and the unfortunate few got the dreaded triple bogey. It didn’t take long – just four to five hours, before all 30 foursomes strode into the Redwoods clubhouse. There they were met with a gleaming legion of orange-shirted volunteers who graciously guided them to their tables. The evening portion was about to begin. As golfers sat at their assigned tables, happily chewing on BBQ steak and salmon dinners, those orange-shirted volunteers were regaling the crowd with poems, more contests and winner announcements. Thousands were given away in prizes, including a $1000 Canucks Game Suite combined with $500 in Keg Gift Certificates, 4 state-of-the-art golf carts, 4 chi chi golf bags, plus Blu-Tooth speakers and earphones, a multitude of gift cards and the proverbial much more. When all was said and done the tournament raised more than $240,000 with proceeds going to support dozens of programs, including Food for Thought, Counselling, Literacy, Mental & Physical Health, Career Education, Summer Programs, just to name a few. Remembering

RemembeRing a Renaissance Woman silvia Knittel memorial scholarship

Silvia Knittel, a teacher at Langley Fine Arts, was at the front line of truth and inspiration – not because she was a proselytizer or sanctimonious lecturer, but because she never ceased to expose herself to doubt. She would drape her lean frame over her computer and ask of herself and anyone within earshot – Does this make sense? What is really going on here? Do you find a problem in identifying with a moose? How would you describe chaos in three sentences or less? While Silvia’s need to open up a child’s mind epitomized every teacher’s angst, she was more adept at it than most. With a personality that gracefully combined a smidgen of nuttiness with a truckload of wisdom, she was able to penetrate the inner workings of the teenage consciousness. And she

did so year after year for more than two decades. And while students, friends, family and colleagues in Langley struggled with Silvia’s untimely passing, so did a legion of mourners half-way around the world. Silvia’s imprint on the Langley School District was profound, and it was perhaps equally deep in Kenya. In 2009, with nothing more than a vague desire to see the world and to maybe make a difference, Silvia Knittel found herself in Kenya. Suddenly, she was communicating with kindred spirits who were gently asking for help. Over the years, she came to understand their plight and gradually worked out ways to provide unobtrusive assistance. It is thanks to Silvia and all those that she gathered into her web of generosity and care that PAMOJA exists today. Operating under the aegis of the Langley School District Foundation, PAMOJA has a mission to provide educational opportunities and scholarships to Kenyan students. Currently, PAMOJA supports

62 Kenyans, providing scholarships to ensure graduation from secondary schools. silvia Knittel memorial scholarship If anyone encouraged Kenyan students to aspire to their greatest levels of potential, it was Silvia Knittel. The stories are too numerous to include in this article, but they will be revealed in future editions. The Langley School District Foundation is honoured to set up the Silvia Knittel Memorial Scholarship to provide scholarships to Kenyan students. Only 60% of Kenyans can afford to send their children to secondary school. That means that 40% of the population remains uneducated and therefore ill-equipped to compete in a global market. Silvia found such a statistic unacceptable. Please help if you can. All donations go directly to the Silvia Knittel Memorial Scholarship Fund. Nancy Crawford Memorial Scholarship

Preschool, child care, kindercare and early morning school age care Located at Douglas Park Community School

George Bernard Shaw once said, “Those that can’t do, teach.” As if ? What did he really know? Well probably a few things, but nothing about teaching or teachers. Just look at Nancy Crawford – a teacher and an artist. She excelled in both professions – one no less than the other. Her students will attest to her prowess, as will an entourage of encaustic devotees, to the extent that a Nancy Crawford Memorial Scholarship has been established, with almost $40,000 being raised in just eight months. To maintain the momentum, Nancy’s husband, family and friends will be on hand at the FUNK FUSION FUNDRAISER for the Nancy Crawford Memorial Scholarship. Featuring the hot licks, cool grooves and best instrumental jazz/funk fusion in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, the Blues Hoodoo will be rocking it out at Chief Sepass Theatre. Be there at 6 pm on Saturday, October 5. Idea X Challenge

a District’s Vision in action: An innovative, inspiring and unified learning community. We shopped ourselves blind. Between booths selling bookmarks and soaps, were dozens of unique wares, representing whole new levels of genius and innovation. Kids in neon green t-shirts displaying toys made from all-natural materials; tiny munchkins, barely 3-feet tall showing off eco-friendly hand-warmers; teen-agers, enormous and coy, hidden underneath hoodies, barking out their new ideas and products. Young entrepreneurs looking slick in borrowed blazers demanding attention. Hundreds of children shoppers zooming in like flies and ricocheting from one booth to the next. Businesspeople from the community appearing in neat suits and expensive shoes negotiating their way through the mayhem. The energy was electric, the scene alive and the impact more than expected. It was a day in May 2019 when the Langley Events Centre was crammed to the rafters with hundreds of hardened hucksters. Culled from the Langley School District 4-12 classrooms, theirs was a mission to showcase the most daring, fresh and awesome ideas and prototypes. This was the IDEA SUMMIT. Standing for INNOVATION; DESIGN; ENTREPRENEURSHIP: and ALTRUISM, all aspects were clearly on display. The Day UnfolDeD as UnexpecTeD. Throughout the day, student entrepreneurs sold their wares, explained their marketing strategies and vied for top spot among their peers. Mentors with discerning eyes and razor-sharp acumen observed, interrogated and analyzed. Before the day was done, they had chosen three protégés, one from each age group. The hisTory Two years ago, when the Langley School District embraced the concepts of creativity, entrepreneurship, risk-taking, reaching beyond convention, seeking out new horizons and educating students to lead rather than follow, the eruption of the IDEA Summit was inevitable. Principals, teachers, students and members from the community were instantly on board. GeTTinG There In preparation for the IDEA Summit students were encouraged to take leaps of faith and attack problems from different angles. With

extended limits, shattered ceilings and with eyes and minds open to every possibility, Langley kids suddenly broke out of the usual box of ideas and turned brainstorms from familiar to fantastic. Programs including Power Play, Youth Philanthropy, Caring in Action, as well as less formal initiatives promoting innovation, design, entrepreneurship and socialpreneurship. were adopted by the school district. And they helped to foster the phenomenon. As previously said – the impact was more than expected. Then this happened! iDeax – chanGinG climaTe or a climaTe of chanGe Are we at the tipping point? Have we gone beyond the point of no return? Who on this planet is more entitled to ponder the question and have a voice than the under 18 crowd? No one. Hence the introduction of IDEAX as an addition to IDEA Summit. The challenGe – WhaT To Do aboUT sinGle-Use plasTic To engage teams of secondary students in an authentic real-world challenge.

committee. Six teams made it through Eliminations and with the advice and mentorship of the organizing committee and community mentors, went on to fine-tune their final pitch. Homing in on viable research to support feasible solutions, the teams rehearsed and rehearsed again until they were ready for the final adjudication. D-Day – The aDjUDicaTors DeciDe The solemnity of the auditorium stood in stark contrast to the vibrancy of the Idea Summit Emporium. But perhaps that was appropriate. This was the venue for the IDEAX finale. Everything was suddenly serious. Standing alone on a huge stage facing a panel of esteemed environmentalists and an audience filled with students, teachers and community leaders, each team methodically went through their presentations with confidence and style. Showcasing well thought out and plausible ideas, feasible solutions, forceful rationales, in-depth research and dynamic marketing strategies to the adjudicators, the roster of contenders was then cut from six teams to three.

The premise The proliferation of single-use plastic and its devastating impact on the environment, eco-systems, animal conservation and general health and welfare of our planet has become such a daunting issue that most people turn away from the problem in despair. But our student teams were tasked with tackling a wicked world-wide problem head-on. Students knew from the get-go that they needed to be committed. This was no school project or term essay. Experts were listening. Corporations had their ears tuned to adaptable ideas and the Langley School District Foundation was willing to set aside $40,000 in scholarships. This was serious. Fashioned after the well-known online X prize which fosters “highprofile competitions to motivate individuals, companies and organizations across all disciplines to develop innovative ideas and technologies that help solve the grand challenges that restrict humanity’s progress”, IDEAX was a vehicle to generate feasible solutions to a monumental problem. The launch in January of 2019 kicked off with 15 teams of grade 8-12 students delving deeply into what it takes to collaborate effectively and to work through the design thinking process (ADST curriculum) towards a viable solution. Teams embarked on a vigourous schedule of research, development, prototype testing, feedback analysis and multiple iterations. Documenting their progress on the district’s IDEAX Instagram, the teams demonstrated their thinking and noted their interactions with experts. Their four-month long journey culminated in the Eliminations Challenge whereby the contenders submitted detailed digital PR Kits for assessment, presented their ideas and fielded questions on their initial work to the organizing

Catriona Power, Director of Foresight Cleantech Accelerator Centre; Adrian Midwood, Executive Director of Plastic Oceans Foundation Canada; and Alex Johansen, Outdoor Learning and Sustainability Program Specialist at Science World, after studying the PR Kits, listening closely to each presentation and asking tough questions were then obligated to choose the first and second-place team. Spectators witnessed courage and brilliance as students revealed their strategies. Evidence of dedicated time following the design thinking process and multiple iterations resulted in a sextet of enterprising solutions – Solutions that went way beyond simple recycling to ending the use of single-use plastic entirely. The journeys and the processes were fascinating to watch and absorb. To wit - A visual green rating system for local businesses; a car seat recycling policy change; edible water bubbles for hydrating; and waterproof sleeping bags donated to the homeless, were but a few of the brilliant ideas showcased at the 2019 IDEAX Challenge.

The Winners

First place of $20,000 in scholarships went to the Eco Tech team who developed Edible Spoons made of natural ingredients including flour, water, salt, sugar and spices. The utensils come with a book, including a utensil recipe, instructions written in 10 languages, a page describing the global issue and a digital space for people to share their experiences with the spoons. Second place of $10,000 in scholarships was awarded to the STOP team who developed interactive lesson plans for school-age children. Focusing on the terrible impact plastics impart on our land and in our oceans, the team hammered it home with a bin filled with sand. A sifter shows the microplastics that are polluting beaches throughout the world. The IDEA SUMMIT and the IDEAX Challenge are supporting the Langley School District as it moves forward in the implementation of the true philosophy of the redesigned B.C. curriculum. Entrepreneurship/Socialpreneurship and the design thinking skills associated with creativity and innovation; developing and marketing products and ideas; and enhancing social and business awareness are now part of the curriculum - specifically the Applied Design, Skills & Technologies, as well as the Career curriculums. Additionally, we are seeing the intentional development of the core competencies through authentic and meaningful experiences focusing on the Do and Understand from the Know, Do, Understand model. While we are following our own design thinking process in implementing the new curriculum in our classrooms, let’s not forget to celebrate the learning along the way. With authentic audiences composed of, not only school district personnel, but community leaders, partners and members allow students to experience a greater and more profound level of learning and understanding. It is truly exciting to see so many B.C. educators embracing the development of such important skills – skills that ultimately enable students to be successful in a rapidly changing world.

#ShowTheLove for your community during national day of giving

The 6 annual GivingTuesday movement sweeps the nation December 3, 2019, uniting individuals, businesses and communities in a shared expression of ‘doing good,’ and pledging time to volunteer, advocate for favourite causes or simply show compassion and care for others.

can have incredible impact. Organize a toy drive at your school or collect donations to buy gifts for kids in need. Also, organizing a food drive is a great way to ensure no one goes hungry while families celebrate the holiday season.

This isn’t really a new concept for Langley. Year after year, Langley has shown its giving spirit and local charities and businesses have even partnered under the banner LangleyGives to promote all the great volunteerism and philanthropy efforts seen by Langley residents, for Langley residents.

• Volunteering is a great way for students to learn the importance of contributing to society in positive ways. Take a trip to a local shelter, food bank, or animal rescue and volunteer as a class. Or, visit a park near your school and spend some time cleaning it up, making it a more enjoyable place for all.

th

Why GivingTuesday is important

Langley – a giving community

GivingTuesday is more than a moment, it’s a movement. By participating in GivingTuesday, you will join a new generation of community champions lending a hand to make our local and global community a better place.

Starting November 1 we are asking you to take the pledge to “show the love” and “share the love.”

#ShowTheLove as a family • Discuss your family’s favourite charity. Encourage your kids to research what charities are in their local community and share ideas as a family on how you can show support today, or throughout the year. • Kids, ask your parents to make a commitment where they work! Businesses are an important part of our compassionate community, too. • “Pay it forward” in your neighbourhood. Mow an elderly neighbour’s lawn; buy a coffee for the next person in

• #ShowTheLove – Lead by example. Post photos on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook or SnapChat explaining the good work you, your family, your school or your community group is doing this year. line at your local coffee shop; volunteer as a family for a special event…there are endless examples on how giving a little time or money can make big impact on people in your community. #ShareTheLove as a school community • As kids start crafting their Santa wish lists it’s good to remember those who won’t experience the same sense of joy due to difficult financial situations. Kids helping kids

• #SharetheLove – Look for posts from businesses and other individuals who are showing their giving spirit. Keep an eye out for the #LangleyGives heart logo – including on ads in the Langley Advance Times – and promote any challenges issued for others to join the GivingTuesday community. Tower Gardens

Growth of the Tower Gardens in Langley School District By Carole Chang, Public Health Dietitian and Tamira Burton, Healthy School Nurse

The Langley School District Foundation, in partnership with Fraser Health and the School District, is supporting several Langley schools to grow fruit and vegetables. Tower Gardens have been purchased and are providing fresh produce to supplement the breakfast, lunch and snack programs to students. The Seed It all started two years ago with a tiny seed – a dream that no students in the Langley School District would come to school hungry. One of the innovative solutions by the School District Foundation was to install Tower Gardens. These aeroponic gardens allow year round growing of fresh fruits and vegetables for students. Taking Root The idea took root initially in four schools with a total of nine Tower Gardens being made possible with support from Vancity. Students have been learning to grow fruit and vegetables, and the food grown in these gardens is a fresh and healthy addition to the schools’ food programs. Two of the tower gardens are located inside a school cafeteria to raise awareness of the importance of healthy eating. The Growth Reports have shown that most children do not eat enough fruits and vegetables. Recognizing that Tower Gardens provide students with access to fresh fruits and vegetables, this year the Foundation partnered with Fraser Health to get support from Farm to School BC for three more Tower Gardens for Langley elementary schools. As each Tower Garden springs up in the schools, the students get to experience the full growth cycle of fruits and vegetables. What is an aeroponic Tower Garden? Aeroponics is the process of growing plants in an air or mist environment without the use of soil. The nutrient rich solution constantly bathes plant roots causing the plant to grow quickly. Leafy greens are typically ready for harvest in about 3 weeks. Each tower garden has space for 20 plants and requires special growing lights for optimal growth.

School District aim to improve the health and wellbeing of students by creating a healthy school environment. The Harvest Bountiful crops such as lettuce, kale, spinach, cucumbers, zucchini, strawberries, and herbs are being grown in the Tower Gardens. Due to the shortened growing cycle and regular harvesting, students can enjoy fresh produce throughout the school year. For example, some of the produce has been made into strawberry and kale smoothies for breakfast, baked kale chips for snacks, or garden salads for lunch. The possibilities are endless! The Environments Langley schools are wonderful environments for raising healthy eaters and building connections between healthy eating and food literacy. Each Tower Garden in the Langley School District creates hands-on learning opportunities as well as fresh food for students. The students are eager and ready to learn. It is well known that healthy students are better learners and better educated students are healthier.
