About International Women’s Day About International Women’s Day International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated annually on March 8. The day has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911. The day is not country, group or organization specific - and belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. Gloria Steinem, world-renowned

feminist, journalist and activist once explained “The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights.” So make International Women’s Day your day and do what you can to truly make a positive difference for women.

What is International Women’s Day? International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. No one government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women’s network or media hub is solely responsible for International Women’s Day. Many organizations declare an annual IWD theme that supports their specific agenda or cause, and some of these are adopted more

2020 Theme: International Women’s Day 2020 campaign theme is

Maureen Keyes In 2006 Xtreme Talent Dance Company Opened its doors in Abbotsford, and has been home to hundreds of dancers looking for somewhere to channel their creative energy. With programs for all ages, you can find something for everybody in the family. With so much variety in our programming the studio is in use full force from when we open at 7am until we lock the doors at 10pm. Xtreme Talent has been one of the most rewarding experiences for Maureen. “It’s a lot of blood sweat and tears but having my daughter grow up surrounded by positive energy and the influence of other kids has been a huge blessing!”. The Primary focus of Xtreme Talent has always been to offer somewhere for kids and teens to go where they feel inclusive, accepted and celebrated. Making connections with kids that last a lifetime. When asked to reflect on her journey and what has contributed to her success, she will be quick to say that it wasn’t always easy. My advice to any young woman starting a business would be to find people that support and encourage you and trust your vision. Whether it’s family, clientele or staff, keep searching for those who believe in you. The Xtreme Talent Family has been growing strong for 14 years and has been blessed to have found loyal support from so many, right from the start. Xtreme is fortunate to have some of the best staff and faculty that are invested in the ongoing success and growth of the studio. “My Business would not be what it is today, without my incredible staff members. These Ladies ( & Gents), are the reason for my success, and I will never take that for Granted.” Up next for 2020? Xtreme recently became a member of the Abbotsford Arts Council, and is looking forward to being a solid voice in the future of the Arts in Abbotsford. Xtreme is also looking forward to being the New Dance Team for the Fraser Valley Bandits! The Successorship Plan of Cindy Boury Private Wealth Management Building a business takes an immense amount of hard work and dedication, while also creating long-lasting client relationships over the years. Clients will inevitably ask their Financial Advisor, “What will happen to ME when YOU retire!?” As professionals we care about our clients and their futures, and want to ensure they are in great hands when we do decide to retire from the business. Even though retirement is not on the horizon for some time, Cindy wanted to find the ideal solution that would leave her clients taken care of in regards to their financial futures as well as having her legacy continued onwards. Three years ago, her daughters Sheryl and Susan changed career paths and joined the team. Kristina Norgren

Karen Baillie

Propelled by a desire to share her skills with others, Kristina opened the Academy of Kosmetae in 1989. Prior to this, Kristina’s career, in working with European trained Beauticians, inspired within her a deep respect for this profession which she, in turn, imparted to her students.

Since May 2013, Karen has been the Chief Executive Officer of Menno Place in Abbotsford, the largest seniors campus of care in BC, which serves over 700 seniors and has a staff of 675.

Though the challenges were many, the memories as an educator are rich indeed! A student, returning to visit the Academy after 25 years, parted with the words “Thank you for my life.” Graduate students from all walks of life, from all cultures, from the ages of 18-72, some with disabilities, took the recessive proof Beauty Industry in hand and launched the many spas flourishing today in the Fraser Valley and beyond. Some of these graduates, inspired by their education, went on to pursue careers as Registered MassageTherapists and several became High School teachers. The proud mother of her fine and erudite son, Kristina considers it her life’s privilege to have been the mentor of so many successful, contributing Beauticians!

Karen has more than 40 years’ experience in geriatric care, chairing the Governance Committee for the Surrey Board of Trade before moving to Abbotsford. In 2011, she was awarded the prestigious Surrey Women in Business Award in the professional category. “I first encountered seniors care during my nursing training and knew these were the people I felt called to serve,” says Karen. Along with serving as director (and past President) of BC Care Providers, she has been a member of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce Board for one term. Karen volunteers weekly at Ruth and Naomi’s Mission in Chilliwack, serving the homeless and poor.

Abbotsford’s Women in Business 2020 Colette Pilgim

Rochelle Pemble

Colette’s floral career began in the early 90’s after graduating floral design school in Toronto, Ontario.

Capt’n Crunch Recycling has been a family owned and operated business since 1971. In 2016, Rochelle joined lifelong Capt’n Crunch employee Rick Pemble Jr., as Managing Director of Operations. “This year, we implemented a sorting line system which has brought recycling to a whole new level. We can recover and recycle at least 70% of material from demolition waste instead of sending it to the land fill. This is something we’re all very excited about,” says Rochelle.

In 1996 she moved to B.C. and worked in wholesale floral and special events in the Greater Vancouver area. The experience she gained in these areas was invaluable (flower auction purchasing and large-scale event design to name a few) but the desire to be an entrepreneur was always on her mind. In 2010 she opened She’s My Florist and has not looked back. Colette and her team believe customers deserve amazing service and quality product every single visit. She’s My Florist has been voted ‘A-List Favourite Florist’ for the past four years, is a proud member of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce and the Abbotsford Executive Association and supports many local charities and community vents.

A mother to 3 beautiful girls, Rochelle has been in the customer service industry since she was 16 years old. A strong work ethic, remarkable customer service skills, and interpersonal skills have been fundamental to Rochelle’s success in the retail world and service industry.

When she is not working Colette can be found in the stands cheering on her son’s baseball team!

“My commitment to maintaining the legacy of Rick Sr. and passing the company down to future generations is my motivation. I am very excited to see what the future brings,” says Rochelle.
